Trucking Companies in Anaheim, CA: Driving the Heart of Southern California’s Economy
Anaheim, California, may be best known for Disneyland, but behind its tourism attractions lies a bustling economy, supported in part by the trucking industry. Located in the heart of Southern California, Anaheim serves as a key hub for logistics and transportation, with several trucking companies playing an essential role in moving goods in and out of the region.
Why Anaheim is a Key Hub for Trucking
Anaheim’s strategic location, close to major highways like Interstate 5 and State Route 91, makes it an ideal spot for trucking companies to operate. Trucking Companies in Anaheim Ca provide essential services for industries ranging from retail to manufacturing, ensuring that goods are delivered on time and in excellent condition.
Southern California is also home to numerous fulfillment centers for major e-commerce companies, which rely heavily on trucking to meet the increasing demand for fast shipping. Anaheim’s central location within Orange County and its robust transportation infrastructure contribute to making the city a logistical powerhouse, offering companies in the trucking industry a significant competitive advantage.

How to Have Great Food on Multi-Day Hikes
Good food is essential formulate-day hiking passages, but food is generally the heaviest part of a pack. Food is generally between 25 and 35 of the weight of the pack on a 5 to 7 day hike. This means that nearly between 5 kg (11lb.) and 8 kg (17lb.) is food. However, also it adds up to further, if you're taking a longer hike. Unless you have done some exploration and spent a fair quantum of plutocrat to keep all your hiking gear extremely light, also you're presumably going to carry a heavy pack. But there are several effects you can do to keep the weight down and the nutrition up.
Still, also you have a fairly large pool of coffers to problem break, if you're travelling with a larger group of 5 to 10 people. On multi-day hikes, if you can resolve the food in half, also you're carrying only half the food weight at most at any time. This can make a tremendous difference in managing the safety and exertion on the trail. A food drop into the trail may be possible. For numerous hikes, there are original services that deal with transporting people and inventories into remote locations. However, also a food drop is possible, if you can plan your route to have a common trail entry in the middle. Let's look at some of the options then. On littoral hikes, water hack service is generally possible to places along the trail. The West Coast Trail, North Coast Trail, Juan de Fuca Marine Trail, Mesquite Peninsula, and Nootka Island can all be reached by water hack. These locales can also be reached by pier airplane.
Copter service may also be available, but is presumably the most precious option. Some trails have a fairly easy hike into a central position where a circle can be taken, similar as in the South Chil-cotin Mountains' Spruce Lake area. This area is also serviced by regular pier airplane breakouts and steed quilting. The Juan de Fuca Marine Trail has a parking lot entry point near the middle of the trail at Sombrero Beach. Further remote locales without lakes may only be accessible by hiking in or by copter, similar as in the Stein Valley. But, hiking food into an area kind of defeats to the purpose of  food drop.
Although these wilderness training trails are each in British Columbia, the same idea applies away. The coming major option is to plan ahead and dehydrate food. Utmost anything can be dehydrated, from flesh, to vegetables, to fruits. Dehydrated food can be veritably delicious if it's fairly fresh and if it has been kept in refrigeration. Rehydrating means cooking a little longer, but the fresh energy weight is minimum. Adding spices to flesh before dehydrating helps with medication.
An entire mess can be dehydrated, therefore reducing the weight by as important as 75. This can make a veritably big difference in weight without compromising the nutrition, variety, and taste. However, taking several multi-day hikes a time, a good quality food dehydrator is well worth the plutocrat, if you're a regular tramper. Of course, you can buy dehydrated reflections, but the cost can be considerable for a trip if you're 5 to 10 people, and the newness and flavor are generally compromised because of the age of the packaged food.
However, also dehydrating food is the alternate stylish option, if a food drop is prohibitive because of position or cost. On a recent 8- day hike of the North Coast Trail, I carried lower than 5 kg in food because of dehydrating. I ate veritably well. Whether you plan on having a food drop in the middle of your hike or plan on dehydrating food to reduce the weight, godparent-trip planning is necessary.
Either way can make sure that you have plenitude of good, nutritional food and minimized weight in your pack. Having enough food means that your energy can be maintained to meet the increased demands on your energy reserves. So plan your trip with one of these effective ways to reduce weight in place, and enjoy!

Canada and British Columbia invest in infrastructure in the British Columbia Central Interior to create jobs and strengthen communities
From: Infrastructure Canada
News release
New investments in community infrastructure by the governments of Canada and British Columbia will benefit Central Interior communities while also supporting economic recovery in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic by getting projects underway and meeting communities’ needs as they restart their economies.
Nelson, British Columbia, July 3, 2020—New investments in community infrastructure by the governments of Canada and British Columbia will benefit Central Interior communities while also supporting economic recovery in the context of the COVID-19 pandemic by getting projects underway and meeting communities’ needs as they restart their economies.
These investments will play a key role in strengthening local economies, and helping ensure British Columbians have access to the services and cultural networks they need to build resilient communities.
Today, Terry Beech, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard on behalf of the Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities and the Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and Rural Economic Development; and the Honourable Michelle Mungall, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Nelson-Creston, on behalf of the Honourable Selina Robinson, B.C. Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing, announced funding for 25 projects under the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Plan in the Central Interior.
The Nelson Civic Theatre Society will rehabilitate the Nelson Civic Theatre into a cultural media arts centre. This project will divide the existing 10,000 square feet theatre into three separate theatre spaces. Each theatre will be upgraded with new seating as well as updates to the lobby area, a new elevator and new washrooms, box office and reception area.
The Okanagan Indian Band will rebuild the cultural arbor that had been a longstanding community gathering place for powwows, ceremonies, youth and elders’ gatherings, cultural events and workshops. Including a stage, children's play area, walking path, bleachers, and landscaping, the new space will restore a key venue for bringing residents together and celebrating the Band’s heritage.
The District of Lillooet will install a new carbon dioxide refrigeration system to replace the existing ammonia system in the Lillooet Recreation Centre facility. The new system will be safer and re-use the heat generated by the plant to heat other parts of the arena to save energy and reduce operating costs.
Among the other projects receiving this funding are improvements to community centres, health centres, storm water management, drinking water and wastewater facilities, cultural facilities and social support hubs.
The Government of Canada is contributing more than $22.6 million, the Government of British Columbia is contributing over $15 million and the individual applicants are contributing more than $4 million to these projects through the Community, Culture, and Recreation Infrastructure Stream (CCRIS), and the Rural and Northern Communities Infrastructure Stream (RNIS) of the Investing in Canada Plan.
More than $7 million of the federal and provincial funding is going to three projects in Indigenous communities.
Further announcements of infrastructure investments will follow in the coming months as Canada and British Columbia work together to support jobs, improve our communities, and safely and sustainably restore economic growth.
Quotes
“Investing in community, recreation and cultural centres promotes people’s health and well-being and builds strong dynamic communities where people want to put down roots and do business. Cultural hubs like the Nelson Civic Theatre and the Okanagan Indian Band’s Cultural Arbor are the backbone of our communities and important focal points for activities that bring people together and help us grow. These, along with the 23 other projects we’re announcing today, will support local economies now, help celebrate local heritage, and bring residents new amenities and programs that will make a real difference in people’s lives for years to come.”
Terry Beech, Parliamentary Secretary to the Minister of Fisheries, Oceans and the Canadian Coast Guard and Member of Parliament for Burnaby North—Seymour on behalf of the Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of Infrastructure and Communities, and the Honourable Maryam Monsef, Minister for Women and Gender Equality and of Rural Economic Development
“In partnership with the federal government, we are investing in infrastructure that will strengthen communities by boosting local economies and creating opportunities for people across British Columbia. Now, more than ever, people need public spaces and services to support their health and well-being, and this infrastructure funding will bring jobs and hope to communities when they need it most.”
The Honourable Michelle Mungall, Member of the Legislative Assembly for Nelson-Creston, on behalf of the Honourable Selina Robinson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing

New Post has been published on https://travelonlinetips.com/london-to-cardiff-train-journey-time-could-be-cut-by-15-minutes-if-new-operators-plan-goes-through-2/
London to Cardiff train journey time could be cut by 15 minutes if new operator’s plan goes through
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Faster trains between Cardiff, Bristol Parkway and London could arrive next year – if a new train operator can overcome opposition to its plan.
Grand Union Trains has applied to run hourly trains between Cardiff and London, cutting the current journey time of around two hours to one hour 45 minutes.
GWR currently has a monopoly on the route, and is planning timetable improvements from December 2019. It promises a fastest trip of one hour 42 minutes.
We’ll tell you what’s true. You can form your own view.

On its application to the Office of Rail and Road, Grand Union says that the first train of the day would depart from Cardiff Central at 6.35am, arriving at London Paddington at 8.20am.
The corresponding existing train on GWR leaves nine minutes earlier and arrives 12 minutes later.
Grand Union says passengers will be able to buy tickets on the train and anyone without a seat will get a 50 per cent refund.
Grand Union says the time saving would come about by cutting out stops at Swindon and Reading. But trains would still call at Newport, and at Severn Tunnel Junction.
The plan is to use old electric trains displaced from the East Coast Main Line by new “Intercity Express” trains.
(Grand Union)
The older trains have a driving van trailer (DVT) which is expected to be used for urgent freight. “This may also include refrigerated space for the rapid movement of NHS biological items,” says Grand Union.
But the Department for Transport (DfT) has argued strongly against the plan, saying it is “highly likely that the service will abstract considerable revenue from franchised services” connecting Bristol and Cardiff with London.
The DfT also criticised the planned rolling stock, hauled by Class 91 locomotives, because of its “relatively poor acceleration characteristics”.
It says: “Any decline in performance on the line as a result of the proposed service could have consequent implications for the revenue and economic stability of franchised services.”
There are also concerns that passengers from further west in Wales will add to crowding on local trains if they decide to change trains at Cardiff to save money.

Grand Union says: “The Welsh government supports the proposal and has forwarded a letter of support to a number of institutions.”
Transport for Wales has applied to run competing trains on another GWR route, connecting Swansea, Cardiff and Newport with Bristol Temple Meads.
A GWR spokesperson said: “Working with our partners we have transformed services on the Great Western network over the last two years with the introduction of brand new Intercity Express trains enabling a 25 per cent increase in seat numbers, with better punctuality and reliability.
“Our new timetable in December will improve on that even further, with faster services with more seats providing 30 per cent more high speed services than we do today.
Support free-thinking journalism and subscribe to Independent Minds
“In that context, Grand Union’s current proposals seem disappointing, with the 1980s-era 225s offering no real journey time savings for customers, and significantly fewer seats than GWR’s brand new Intercity Express Trains will already be providing. GWR will have been offering three peak trains an hour from Cardiff to London for over a year.”
Grand Union’s announcement follows a demand by Virgin Trains to run trains on the West Coast Main Line between London Euston and Liverpool.
Sir Richard Branson’s train operator has been disqualified from continuing its franchise after 2020.
The Office of Rail and Road says: “We ensure the passenger and freight train operating companies have fair access to the rail network – and that best use is made of capacity.”

“We have been working towards this goal since 2017 and could not be more excited to see it come to fruition,” said Helmuth Lutty, Senior Vice President of Shipping Operations for Fresh Del Monte Produce. “These six new vessels set the bar even higher, and allow us to deliver the high-quality fresh fruits and vegetables we are known for while meeting our sustainability goals.”
The vessels have an overall length of 630 feet with a 98-foot beam and a design draught of 30 feet. The cargo capacity is 1,276 TEU with 634 plugs for forty-foot high cube reefer containers. Given the perishable nature of the fresh fruits and vegetables they are designed to transport, the air-cooled containers will maintain the cargo at specified temperatures, traveling in reefer mode with multiple temperature variants from -25C to 40C.
The first of the six ships, the Del Monte Gold, was delivered at the beginning of July and is currently sailing from China to the Panama Canal. She will be followed by the Del Monte Rose, Del Monte Harvester, Del Monte Spirit, Del Monte Valiant, and Del Monte Pride. The new ships are designed to replace Del Monte’s existing U.S. east coast fleet initially operating the existing routes between Central and South America and the U.S. east coast. The company expects to expand operations to additional ports as the new vessels come into service.
“In 2018 we committed to lead by example and reduce our vessel emission by 10 percent,” said Hans Sauter, Chief Sustainability Officer of Fresh Del Monte Produce. “With the addition of these six new container vessels, we are well on our way, estimating a savings of nearly 19 thousand metric tons of fuel each year.”
Through its ocean carrier services, Del Monte transport fresh produce and beverages to markets worldwide currently using a fleet of 11 owned and six chartered refrigerated vessels.

Coronavirus Snarls Trans-Pacific Shipping and Ripples Through U.S. Service
Congestion at Chinese ports and disrupted cruisings have squeezed space on China-bound vessels and created an imbalance of the 40- foot long refrigerated containers used to ship fruit, meats and other perishables on three-week voyages throughout the Pacific, with many stuck on the China side.
The traffic jam is pushing up transport prices for U.S. exporters and sowing turmoil on the heels of an unpleasant trade war.
Shipping volumes out of China plummeted in February as factory shutdowns in the wake of the epidemic crimped industrial production. Containership operators have canceled nearly 60 trans-Pacific cruisings to the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, Calif., in the first quarter and more than 110 to all of North America. Typically there have to do with 200 sailings of container ships across the Pacific a month.
That indicates less ships are available to make the return journey east, and the typical turnover of containers has actually stalled.
” Right now empty [refrigerated] containers are in short supply,” said Peter Friedmann, executive director of the Agriculture Transport Coalition, a trade group for exporters. “It’s more difficult to get on a vessel, and there’s insufficient outbound capacity to deal with all the cargo looking for bookings, particularly to China.”
It’s the height of California’s orange-growing season, however truckers for Fast Method Xpress Inc., who haul oranges and other produce from the Central Valley to the port of Oakland, have actually waited in line there for empty cooled containers for approximately four hours. By the time the drivers reach the shipping terminal, they sometimes then find all the containers are gone.
” The lines are so long it appears like the L.A. freeway,” said Carleton Booker, the business’s director of sales and operations.
The brand-new coronavirus has actually contaminated more than 80,000 people in China given that it emerged there in late 2019.
A record 2 million containers of seaborne shipping capacity was idled in late February, according to Alphaliner, a Paris-based marine information company. That is more than the 1.5 million containers of capability idled in 2009 at the height of the monetary crisis.
” There are a lot of ships that aren’t moving today,” Michael Upchurch, the chief monetary officer of U.S. railway operator.
Kansas City Southern,
told an investor conference on Monday.

The number of idled container ships in the Pacific region has reached 370, compared to about 230 at the start of the year, according to Jonathan Roach, an analyst at Braemar ACM Shipbroking. He stated that, in addition to canceled sailings due to trade interruptions, about 100 of the ships have actually been pulled out of service to retrofit their exhaust systems to adhere to brand-new guidelines.
Some shipping lines have actually imposed surcharges as high as $2,000 per cooled container on trips to China and other Asian locations, roughly doubling the cost to ship a container of oranges. Other lines have actually cautioned exporters they will be saddled with expenses if blockage at Chinese ports forces ocean carriers to divert cargo to other countries.
” Everybody is defending containers. It’s ruthless,” said Dalton Dovolis, who manages China exports for International Produce Group, a Salinas, Calif.-based exporter of fruits and vegetables. The restricted supply of cooled containers might cut his orange deliveries to China in half today, Mr. Dovolis said.
Approximately one-fifth of the hay that Anderson Hay & Grain Co., ships goes to China, where large dairy producers feed it to their cows.
” Changes in vessel schedules are the most significant mess we’re handling,” said Mark Anderson, president of the Ellensburg, Wash., business, among the biggest U.S. hay exporters. His company moved some 10%less hay to China in February than anticipated.
” We’re continuously trying to reorganize the schedule to keep product going to our customers,” Mr. Anderson said. “The animals still need to eat.”
Snarled logistics have likewise caused headaches for the nation’s biggest meatpackers, who in current weeks have actually jockeyed for area on outgoing vessels, temporarily diverted China-bound deliveries to neighboring nations and dealt with domestic cold-storage centers packed with unshipped pork, chicken and beef.
There are indications that more comprehensive trade circulations could start to pick up: Chinese factories are resuming production as the spread of the infection eases off in that nation, and port congestion is easing as China’s dockworkers, freight handlers and truck motorists go back to work. Meat and citrus groups say Chinese need for their items remains strong, particularly as trade tensions alleviate in between the U.S. and China. But it will be weeks before the complete influence on U.S. factories and farms is clear.
There are thousands of empty shipping containers for items that don’t require refrigeration at the ports waiting to be delivered back to China. “Right now, we’ve got to get a lot of empties and some backlogged exports out the door to Asia,” said Gene Seroka, executive director of the Port of Los Angeles.
Mr. Upchurch, of Kansas City Southern, stated production data coming out of China has begun to enhance, and his company hasn’t seen any cargo decreases at the Panama Canal, where it has a train that connects the Pacific and Atlantic oceans.
Considering that it takes most manufactured goods 25 to 30 days to come from Asia by sea, he stated the company didn’t expect to see the complete impact of the disruption on U.S. rail volumes till later on in March or April. The most immediate effect is on trucking companies that transport products to and from ports to warehouses and rail connections.

Executives at.
Union Pacific Corp.,
one of 2 major U.S. railroads that serve West Coast ports, said the production hold-ups in China are simply beginning to damage shipping volumes. Very first quarter volumes will suffer however the railway is preparing for a snap back once imports from Asia resume.
” U.S. consumers are continuing to buy Televisions, build homes, drive cars and trucks,” financing chief Jennifer Hamann told investors Tuesday. “When the impact of the virus lags us and production ramps back up, we’ll stand prepared to move the goods.”
In the U.S., the gridlock is cutting business for port truckers, the business that move goods back and forth in between ports, storage facilities and rail terminals. Container terminals at the ports of Los Angeles and Long Beach, which together are the largest U.S. entrance for seaborne trade, are operating at about a third of their normal gate capacity, according to the Harbor Trucking Association, a Long Beach, Calif., group that represents port trucking business.
It is taking chauffeurs as long as six hours, rather of two hours, to drop off or pick up containers, said Claudia Geller, the Southern California regional manager for Pacific Coast Container Inc., called PCC Logistics, a transport and warehousing company with centers in Seattle, Tacoma, Oakland and Long Beach.
Her company has actually been stuck for weeks with crammed cooled containers, which are normally dropped the same or next day. The company has actually had one container of frozen meat since Feb. 14, Ms. Geller stated, and the getting date has been pushed back to March12
.
Trucking backyards are filled with empty shipping containers that brought imports of car parts, televisions and clothing. “Our members are stuck with the empties since there’s no location to return them,” said the trucking association’s chief executive, Weston LaBar.
The drop in port volumes might likewise even more depress shipping rates for truckload providers that move items fars away. In 2015 truckers were buffeted by weak freight demand as commercial development faltered.
Generally need ticks up in the coming weeks, as the California produce season and regular port activity create chances for truckers to raise rates, said Jeff Tucker, president of Haddonfield, N.J.-based freight broker Tucker Business Worldwide Inc.
Right now, “the lack of imports is producing overcapacity,” Mr. Tucker stated. “When it does get, this port location is going to slammed and freight is going to be truly difficult to move.”
Comparable distortions are striking the transportation company in China, where travel constraints have kept half of China’s 30 million truck motorists off the road
” Many drivers are still at home,” stated Robin Zheng, the owner of Circle Logistics, a Chongqing-based firm that utilizes about 100 truckers. Mr. Zheng approximated that nationwide trucking capability was at a third of regular levels at completion of February. “They can’t leave; they’re simply waiting on their local government to provide the thumbs-up.”
The trucking system moved about 73%of all goods in China in 2019, according to the National Bureau of Statistics. In the U.S., about 70%of items are moved by road.
Inside China, logistics costs have actually soared. Transporting a shipping container 1,000 miles by road from Chongqing to Shanghai usually costs around $1,500; now, if you can discover a truck, it will cost you $3,000, said Mr. Zheng.
For the farming market, the shipping troubles come on the heels of a trade war that struck U.S. farmers hard, slashing U.S. exports of farm items to China and sapping prices farmers fetch for their products. China in 2018 enforced retaliatory tariffs on U.S. agricultural products including oranges, decreasing deliveries while citrus from Egypt and Spain acquired a stronger foothold in China.

On Wednesday, Mr. Dovolis, the California exporter, informed a packaging home to hold back loading oranges due to the fact that it was unclear whether he had sufficient containers to gather the fruit for transport.
Fruit that doesn’t make it onto boats bound for abroad markets in time can wind up selling at a loss in the domestic market, according to Casey Creamer, chief of California Citrus Mutual, a trade group for the state’s citrus growers.

Cheers, tears, prayers for 2020: A new decade is ushered in
Revelers around the globe are bidding farewell to a decade that will be remembered for the rise of social media, the Arab Spring, the #MeToo movement and, of course, President Donald Trump.
A look at how the world is ushering in 2020:
———
HONG KONG
Revelers as well as pro-democracy protesters flocked to sites across Hong Kong to usher in 2020.
The semi-autonomous Chinese city has toned down New Year’s celebrations amid the monthslong demonstrations. The protests have repeatedly sparked pitched battles with police and have taken their toll on Hong Kong’s nightlife and travel industries.
A fireworks display that traditionally lights up famed Victoria Harbor was canceled amid safety concerns, while some roads were closed and barriers set up in the Lan Kwai Fong nightlife district to control crowds.
———
RUSSIA
Russians began the world’s longest continuous New Year’s Eve with fireworks and a message from President Vladimir Putin urging them to work together in the coming year.
Putin made the call in a short speech broadcast on television just before the stroke of midnight in each of Russia’s 11 time zones. The recorded message was followed by an image of the Kremlin Clock and the sound of its chimes. State TV showed footage of extensive festive fireworks in cities of the Far East.
But one holiday tradition was missing in Moscow this year — a picturesque layer of snow. The Russian capital has had an unusually warm December and temperatures in central Moscow as midnight approached were just above freezing.
———
AUSTRALIA
More than a million people descended on a hazy Sydney Harbour and surrounding areas to ring in of the new year despite the ongoing wildfire crisis ravaging New South Wales, Australia’s most populous state.
The 9 p.m. fireworks over Sydney’s iconic landmarks was briefly delayed due to strong winds, but revelers clearly enjoyed themselves in a desperately needed tonic for the state.
New South Wales has born the brunt of the wildfire damage, which has razed more than 1,000 homes nationwide and killed 12 people in the past few months.
———
NEW ZEALAND
New Zealand’s major cities greeted the new year with fireworks as the nation appeared happy to be done with a year of challenges, both natural and man-made.
On March 15, a lone gunman identified killed 51 people and wounded dozens at two mosques in the South Island city of Christchurch. In December, an eruption of volcanic White Island off the east coast of the North Island killed at least 19 tourists and tour guides.
———
SAMOA
In Samoa, New Year’s Eve was more somber than usual. While fireworks erupted at midnight from Mount Vaea, overlooking the capital, Apia, the end of the year was a time of sadness and remembrance.
A measles epidemic in late 2019 claimed 81 lives, mostly children under 5.
More than 5,600 measles cases were recorded in the nation of just under 200,000. With the epidemic now contained, the Samoa Observer newspaper named as its Person of the Year health workers who fought the outbreak.
———
LONDON
Londoners were making their way to the banks of the River Thames to jostle for position to watch a spectacular fireworks display launched from the London Eye and barges near Parliament.
The familiar chimes of London’s Big Ben clock tower were to ring in the new year, even though they have been silent for most of 2019 because of extensive restoration work.
To the north, the multi-day Hogmanay New Year’s celebrations in Edinburgh began Monday night with a torchlight parade through the streets of the Scottish capital.
Security was tight in both cities and elsewhere in Britain following a recent extremist attack on London Bridge that claimed two lives. Police arrested five men on suspicion of terrorism offenses Monday but said the arrests were not related to the London Bridge attack or to New Year’s Eve celebrations.
———
SOUTH AFRICA
Thousands of revelers gathered at Cape Town’s Waterfront area to ring in the new year with music, dancing and fireworks in front of the city’s iconic Table Mountain.
In past years, residents of Johannesburg’s poor Hillbrow neighborhood would celebrate the New Year by tossing furniture, appliances and even refrigerators from the balconies of high-rise apartment buildings. Police have issued stern warnings, and it appears the dangerous tradition has declined.
In a somber statement, President Cyril Ramaphosa said “while our economy created jobs, these have not been nearly enough to stop the rise in unemployment or the deepening of poverty.”
South African singer Yvonne Chaka Chaka was deported from Uganda, where she was to perform at a New Year’s Eve event. Ugandan police cited visa issues, but Ugandan media reported it was because she had voiced support for Ugandan pop star Bobi Wine, the most potent opposition challenger to President Yoweri Museveni.
———
ROME
Pope Francis delighted tourists and Romans in St. Peter’s Square on Tuesday night when he took a stroll to admire the Nativity scene. Shouts of “Pope! Pope!” and “Happy New Year!” resounded as families rushed to catch a glimpse of him or thrust out their infant in hopes he would pat their heads or pinch their cheeks.
One woman grabbed the pope’s hand and pulled him toward her to shake it. Francis, 83, exclaimed and then struck the woman’s hand twice to free his hand.
At a New Year’s Eve Vespers service in St. Peter’s Basilica, Francis urged people to practice more solidarity and to “build bridges, not walls.” Since becoming pontiff in 2013, Francis has preached openness — a reform-minded agenda that has irritated a small but vocal group of ultra-conservatives in the church.
———
UNITED ARAB EMIRATES
For nearly 10 minutes, fireworks will light the sky over Dubai’s Burj Khalifa, the world’s tallest building, as hundreds of thousands gather downtown to watch the spectacular display.
The New Year’s Eve display at the 828-meter-tall (2,716-foot-tall) skyscraper is just one of seven different fireworks shows across the emirate. Tourists, especially from Europe and Russia, flock to the sunny beaches of Dubai at this time of year to escape the cold, dark winter.
To keep the massive crowds safe, police have created walkways around the Burj Khalifa tower for male-only groups to separate them from families and women.
Dubai this year will be hosting Expo 2020, a world fair that brings the most cutting-edge and futuristic technologies.
———
JAPAN
People flocked to temples and shrines in Japan, offering incense with their prayers to celebrate the passing of a year and the the first New Year’s of the Reiwa era.
Under Japan’s old-style calendar, linked to emperors’ rules, Reiwa started in May, after Emperor Akihito stepped down and his son Naruhito became emperor. Although Reiwa is entering its second year with 2020, Jan. 1 still marks Reiwa’s first New Year’s, the most important holiday in Japan.
Stalls at Zojoji Temple in Tokyo sold sweet rice wine, fried noodles and candied apples, as well as little amulets in the shape of mice, the zodiac animal for 2020. Since the Year of the Mouse starts off the Asian zodiac, it’s associated with starting anew.
Tokyo will host the 2020 Summer Olympics, an event that is creating much anticipation for the entire nation.
———
INDONESIA
Tens of thousands of revelers in Indonesia’s capital of Jakarta were soaked by torrential rains as they waited for New Year’s Eve fireworks while others in the country were wary of an active volcano.
Festive events along coastal areas near the Sunda Strait were dampened by a possible larger eruption of Anak Krakatau, an island volcano that erupted last year just ahead of Christmas Day, triggering a tsunami that killed more than 430 people.
The country’s volcanology agency has warned locals and tourists to stay 2 kilometers (1.3 miles) from the volcano’s crater following an eruption Tuesday that blasted ash and debris up to 2,000 meters (6,560 feet) into the air.
———
SOUTH KOREA
Thousands of South Koreans filled cold downtown streets in Seoul ahead of a traditional bell-tolling ceremony near City Hall to send off an exhausting 2019 highlighted by political scandals, decaying job markets and crumbling diplomacy with North Korea.
Dignitaries ringing the old Bosingak bell at midnight included South Korean Major League Baseball pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu and Pengsoo, a giant penguin character with a gruff voice and blunt personality that emerged as one of the country’s biggest TV stars in 2019.
———
GERMANY
Hundreds of thousands of revelers are expected to ring in the New Year in front of the Brandenburg Gate in Berlin.
Several German cities including Munich and Hamburg have banned private fireworks amid concerns about the danger and environmental impacts from the increasingly powerful fireworks. A recent poll by the Forsa research institute found 59% of Germans would support a ban on private fireworks in city centers, while 37% were opposed.
———
PARIS
A joyful crowd of Parisians and tourists walked, biked and used scooters to reach the Champs-Elysees for the new year celebrations, in a city with almost no public transport amid massive strikes.
Revelers were converging toward the famous avenue to watch a light show at the Arc de Triomphe, followed by a fireworks display at midnight.
Paris police set up a security perimeter around the Champs-Elysees area with a ban on alcohol and traffic restrictions.
All metro lines in the French capital were closed except for two automatic lines, and only a few night buses were running, as Tuesday marked the 27th consecutive day of transport strikes against President Emmanuel Macron’s plans to overhaul the French pension system.
———
NEW YORK
A Chinese dance performance, punctuated with red and gold pyrotechnics, will usher in a host of stars at Times Square’s six-hour New Year’s Eve extravaganza.
The throng of revelers in the heart of Manhattan will get to see rap-pop star Post Malone, K-pop group BTS, country singer Sam Hunt and singer-songwriter Alanis Morissette during the big street party.
While giddiness will likely prevail at the televised event, some important global issues will be driven home, as well.
High school science teachers and students, spotlighting efforts to combat climate change, will press the button that begins the famous 60-second ball drop and countdown to next year.
Then comes the 3,000 pounds (1,360 kilograms) of confetti, accompanied by more pyrotechnics.

Same Day Couriers London | Urgent UK Parcel Delivery
[caption id="" align="aligncenter" width="320"] shipping boxes[/caption]
Courier services are something we take for granted every single day. With Amazon Prime able to handle shipping boxes to our doorstep in under 48 hours, we seem to just assume that quick delivery is the way things have always been. But have you ever stopped to consider the history of courier services? Where did this system originate, and how did it evolve into the massive economy it is today? In this article, we’ll go over the unique and fanciful history of how the human race gets items from Point A to Point B.
Where Courier Services Began
Courier services have evolved from carrier pigeons and horseback mailmen to air freight shipping and drone monitored delivery.
Early Courier Services: A Trusted Delivery Person
Before the middle of the 19th century, you’d simply pay a courier to take your package to its destination. The courier would drop it off in a central location for the recipient to pick up and then be on his way.
Basically, you had to hope you’d come across someone who was making the journey to wherever your mail needed to go.
Mail was not as much of a necessity the further back in time you go. People did not spread out as much and usually did not have business or family in faraway places. You normally wouldn’t need to communicate with someone who was that far out of your home range.
If you couldn’t travel there by foot or by horse or donkey, you probably wouldn’t go. Thus, the likelihood that you’d need to send a message that far away was unlikely.
Then the Gold Rush happened and things got (a little) more advanced.
Pony Express
One of the earliest delivery methods was the pony express, which was built to connect the populated East Coast to the wild frontier of the West Coast. It was the first and earliest form of today’s more modern mail service.
With hoards of people heading to California hoping to strike it rich, the nation had to find a way to connect the two very far sides of the United States. Business was to be conducted on both shores, and people needed to communicate despite the vast distance.
Flyers advertising this early letter delivery service boasted that they could get a letter from New York to San Francisco in just 10 days.
You’d drop off your mail before a certain cutoff time, then a delivery person on horseback would make sure your letter got to the other side of the country as quickly as possible.
The pony express consisted of riders who were positioned all the way across the 2,000 miles from sea to shining sea. The way it worked was that riders would switch horses every 15-20 miles in order to accomplish the delivery as quickly as they could. The chain of riders operated across the entire country.
Once the telegraph was invented and messages could be delivered with far greater speed, the popularity of the pony express declined.
Time Marches On
Eventually, with the development of the nation’s railroad systems, mail grew to be a bit faster and more efficient. Mail could be packed onto trains and make it to faraway places in a short amount of time.
Usually, these items were safer along the journey because they were not exposed to the elements and did not have to sit under the care of just one horseback rider.
Still, everything west of the Mississippi was considered to be the Wild West. Conditions were unpredictable, so you never really knew when your mail would arrive–if it got there at all.
As times changed and human needs evolved, shipping methods grew more and more reliable and speedy.
Is There a History of Shipping Boxes?
This is another thing people usually don’t stop to consider.
Have we always done things this way? What did we do before we could simply ship boxes to each other?
The way things used to work is that all items had to be hand delivered. With no postal service to speak of, you had to hope you knew someone heading in the direction of wherever you wanted your delivery to go.
There was no way to simply be shipping boxes around the world. You had to wrap up your parcels and entrust them to someone who would give you their word when it came to delivery.
It would take days, if not weeks or months, before your items would arrive at their destination.
And if you expect a reply? Well, that’ll be another few months. From letters to tangible goods, delivering things to recipients far away took as long as the trek there.
Shipping boxes did not come around until delivery methods got more quick and reliable. People began to have a need to ship items back and forth across vast distances.
No longer did people just need to send letters–instead, maybe they sent a scarf to their family member in California for Christmas. Or maybe they’d some souvenirs back home to their grandmother.
Shipping boxes instead of just letters didn’t come around until people began to truly spread out and settle far from friends, family, and people they knew.
