kdj and ugliest king and kdj never hearing himself be described as ugly before the apocalypse. two sentences that are coexisting somehow

fhsjdkfj i had a post regarding kdj's face in my drafts so now that i have an excuse to post it im gonna paste it here

now ofc beauty is subjective, art style even more so. while i find webtoon and other official arts of kdj to be absolutely beautiful I've seen other fans claim that he is barely above average or blackbox art suffers from same face syndrome

some official arts of him include but not limited to:

(webtoon/sleepy-c and redice studio, alter/previous official artist, blackbox, and the artist who drew official kdj art for the simplified chinese version)

these are visuals that we have to go by whenever we picture him. when we think of kdj we're most definitely picturing one of these right?! so is he ugly in these pics? most definitely not. so then why the nickname?

first let's address the elephant in the room. kdj does in fact say that before the apocalypse started he was never described as ugly. this is quite important especially when you start considering that 1) he had bullies and 2) he is a south korean. now i dont want to come off as prejudiced but south korean beauty standards are notorious. do you think song minwoo and his lackeys wouldn't stoop low enough and call kdj ugly during one of their daily bullying sessions? is being called ugly worse than being called a psycho son of a murderer even??

anyway, the technical reason why they call him ugly is because his face is """incomprehensible""" his face is obscured by the fourth wall and therefore censored and blurry. you cannot focus too much on it or else you'll get a headache

my hypothesis on this stems from the thought that singshong wrote kdj with y/n in mind. if orv had been a video game, his name 독자 (dokja) which translates to reader would be the same as say 旅行者 (luxingzhe) translating to traveler (can you tell I've only ever played mihoyo games) it's an umbrella name for the self insert mc. but since it isn't a video game orv gives all of us the gift of having a kdj fragment within ourselves and all of us have a different name and different face from each other

the Story in duke pendragon is genuinely good, with a really solid trio of main characters and enough emotional investment and intrigue to keep me reading for sure. plus the art style for the manhwa is really interesting to see out of a redice team given how most of their other stuff looks the same and rather generic (which isn't BAD per-se it's understandable from a Studio with teams made to make quickly serialized manhwa. it's just. uninteresting).

...now, if only they wrote women seriously. sighs. like. they each have their own distinct personalities and mannerisms so there's that at least (oh how low the bar hath fallen) but the creator largely fails to develop them as individuals with their own goals. aside from sol (who i suspect is written as "hm, not bad" as she is because she's written as a dragon first and woman second) they all get completely sidelined when it comes to plot for the entire first season of the manhwa, and 90% of any girl's or woman's screentime is spent thinking about, fawning over, or swooning due to our main guy eren as a tool to...boost his perceived impact and importance to the reader i guess. and stroke the ego of men or something. idk. i think i'm low-balling 90% actually. even girls that are supposedly near the center of major plot points (like ingrid, for example) are never shown...actually getting involved with said major plot point.

this only really starts changing to a small degree in season 2, and while they do at least manage to make it feel like natural character development for like, luna, her motivation still ultimately revolves around eren. i realize that to some extent Everything revolves around the main character and the decisions he makes, but there are more subtle--and, crucially, less misogynistic--ways to do this when writing.

it's genuinely such a shame because--well firstly because misogyny just sucks ass like come on now. but also because the surface level personalities we get from the girls and women in the series are a solid and varied base! they're just not really doing anything else with them!! there could be a lot more going on here very naturally but it's just not being done. sighs.

Właśnie podczas wydarzenia Aniplex Online Fest 2023 zaprezentowano pierwszy pełny zwiastun anime na podstawie manhwy napisanej przez Chugonga i rysowanej przez zmarłego DUBU z REDICE Studio. Ale to nie wszystko! Do obsady dołączyła Haruna Mikawa w roli Aoi Mizushino (siostra Shuna Mizushino - w japońskiej wersji to zmienione imię Sung Jinwoo).

Za kilka kluczowych elementów anime odpowiedzialni będą:

Pamiętajcie, że anime zadebiutuje już podczas nadchodzącej zimy, najpewniej w styczniu 2024! Crunchyroll po raz pierwszy ogłosiło adaptację tej serii podczas swojego panelu na Anime Expo w lipcu 2022.

Jak opisuje Crunchyroll fabułę: od ponad dekady istnieją "bramy" łączące nasz świat z innym wymiarem. Pewni ludzie przebudzili w sobie nadnaturalne moce i są znani jako "łowcy". Jinwoo Sung, łowca niskiej rangi, jest znany jako "najsłabszy łowca wszech czasów". Pewnego dnia przyjmuje tajemnicze zadanie i po tym, gdy był bliski śmierci... zaczyna zdobywać poziomy, jako jedyny łowca na świecie.

Za reżyserię odpowiada Shunsuke Nakashige, a głównym scenarzystą jest Noboru Kimura. Tomoko Sudo zajmuje się projektowaniem postaci, a Hiroyuki Sawano - komponowaniem muzyki.

Crunchyroll będzie transmitować anime poza Azją. A jeśli chodzi o manhwę, jej adaptacja zaczęła się w marcu 2018 i zakończyła w grudniu 2021. Oczywiście możemy też cieszyć się japońską wersją pod tytułem "Ore Dake Level-Up na Ken".
