EUROPE TRIP PT2

The third day of the trip we were going to spend it on Prince's Islands. Before, catching the ferry out to the islands we feed ourselves a very big Turkisk breakfast to kick start our day. The coffee was very good too to our surprise a lot of places we went to served us Turkish coffee which very different what I normally have in Melbourne.

The Princes’ Islands are a cluster of 9 islands southeast of Istanbul in the Sea of Marmara. We spent most of our time at the largest sland, Buyukada. We hired a bike and cycled around the island. I think it may be the most beautiful street I've ever been on. It was so grand and serene. It was like a dream.

We ferried our way back to the Asian side of Istanbul. We walked along the main street of shops and made our way back to our hotel.

Next day, we flew to Capppadocia where we stayed in a Cave Hotel called Anatolian House Caves Hotel which had its own pool. When we first arrived we chilled by the pool and had some of their late buffet breakfast. In the afternoon, I booked us an ATV tour to see the sunset. The ATV felt like an adventure across the desert. It was very dusty and the sunset was very pretty. The ATV tour allowed us to drive our own vehicle I wasn't very good at it so I sat behind Matt. I highly recommend get a mask for the dusty. We stopped at a few different spots to admire the natural landscape : Rose and Red Valleys. They all look very similar. We had dinner at our hotel.

Early morning, we woke up to do the hot airballon experience. The experience picked us up at the hotel 4am. I was quite scared of the hot air balloon. I was worried it would be unsafe, let's YOLO! It was very impressive to see the hot air balloon rise in front of you. It was so big. There were around 20 people in our hot air ballon. The hot air balloon moved very slowly , floating. You didn't even realise you were rising because it was so smooth. There were hardly any wind and everyone was silent. The views were breathtaking and speechless I felt so at peace and happy. Nothing really mattered but the present moment I felt so alive. So much beauty to absorbed! It was my favourite experience. The pilot was so experienced that she lowered the balloon to the city centre and floated and turned the hot air balloon 360 and she landed on the trailer. The experience finished with a glass of champagne and a cerfticate that I fly in a hot air balloon. The tour drove us back at the hotel. We rested for a few hours before we went on our next tour.

Our next tour was the red tour which started at 9.30am like the other tour it came and picked us up. The tour stopped a number of spots and the tour guide was very engaging : Uchisar Castle, Goreme National Park, Love Valley, Fairy Chimneys, Avanos and Devrent Valley. While I was at the Love Valley there was arcade of stalls selling souvenirs I bought my happy apple made of white onyx and injected my happiness into it. I was very happy at that very moment. I wanted to remember with a physical object.

The next morning I requested the hotel to organise breakfast on one of their roof tops so we can watch the sunrise and the hot airballoons. It was one of my favourite activity. The food was alright it was more for the view. After the breakfast we made our way to the airport where we fly to Istabul then to Athens and final stop Santorini.

Ankara is the capital of Turkey! It’s the modern political center of the country.

Spent the night downtown by the shopping street but I didn’t take any pictures! (No success looking for a fleece hat, as all stores had spring fashions!)

It’s home to the Museum of Anatolian Civilizations! I’d heard of Anatolia before purely because I read the 90s shojo manga Red River in college. The museum was great - lots of very old things, and, Pathologic was right, lots of bulls. The main central room had a bunch of well-preserved stone, which reminded me of Assyrian items I’d seen in the last. They were indeed proto-Assyrian!

From there, the tour went to the Ataturk Mausoleum. As far as mausoleums for men who changed the state of a modern country, it was tastefully done! Ended up being there at the same time as some politicians from Gambia (they closed the big walkway to tourists for them) who presented a wreath, so got to see a bit of a diplomatic show from the guards.

From there, the tour bus went to Cappadocia and wow. Two photo stop-offs and they were both grand.

We arrived at 1a to our hotel, in the rain. It is a room in a cave which is cool. But we didn’t spend much time enjoying the room, as we were tired and also knew we would need to wake up at 7:30a the next day.

Our guide and taxi driver (two separate people) met us at 9a at the hotel. Due to Gokay’s dad being famous in the tourism industry here, somehow his mom and dad convinced the dean of the local tourism school to have one of the grad students give us a two-day personal tour of the area.

He was very knowledgeable, speaks both Turkish and English, and was all around a lovely 30-year-old who’s getting married in 24 days! Had to share his “meet-cute.” His fiancé was on one of his tours, they connected on social media because he thought she was cute. After 2 years of conversing on social media, he asked her on a date… they live 12 hours (driving) apart from each other!

Luckily, it was cloudy but not raining this morning. So, we started at Devrent, a rock formation on the side of the road, which the guide called “imagination valley” because you can see a variety of shapes (e.g. camel and Virgin Mary) in the rock formations aka “fairy chimneys.”

Then we went to two sites, Zelve and Pasabaglari which were both government protected, so we paid to get in. But they were incredible! This area was covered in ash by 3 volcanoes at least 9 million years ago, which created this easy to carve, sandstone. Hence the cave hotels, and also these amazing sites of formations formed by air, water and change in temperature as well as caves dug into the rocks. If you’ve ever been to the indigenous sites near Sedona, it’s similar.

After that we went to a local pottery workshop (Alaaddin), where learned about the pottery of the region and the two types of clay they use. First red terracotta, from the river bottom. And the second was a white clay they mixed with quartz to make it strong. We got to try using their foot powered pottery wheel, with a pottery master, to make terracotta bowls. This was Gokay’s first time doing pottery!

We took a nice walk down the river walk, and then headed to lunch, at an old “kervansaray” (Caravan Palace for the music fans out there). An old inn to bring animals to and stay as a stop during a long journey. We had a fixed menu of soup, borek/appetizers, an entre with meat and rice, and then a fruit dessert. Can’t forget to mention the local wine. Due to the ash this region is great for growing wine grapes.

During lunch it started pouring but somehow the rest of the afternoon we were lucky because we were inside or in caves while it was raining and walking outside when it wasn’t.

We spent the afternoon seeing more caves and rock formations. We saw an old church built into a hill side with old frescos. This church was not government protected, so it was not in great shape. It was under someone’s current cave house that was also a cafe we had tea at as it poured rain.

Next we saw the famous “love valley” which has the most phalic shaped fairy chimneys. It was amazing because it cleared up enough for us to see one of the younger volcanoes of the region covered in snow.

We finished our day at Ortahisar looking out on the large fairy chimney has previously been a castle, because it’s so easily guarded. Sadly, a lot of it has collapsed.

We needed a nap at the end of this long day, but we went out to the local town of Urgup near our hotel and had a local dinner at “Cappadocia restaurant.” It was recommended by the guide and it was yummy.

We were going to do a balloon ride early tomorrow but with the possible rain, it got moved to Wednesday morning, so we have a chill night and tomorrow morning before we go around again.

土耳其 --- 卡帕多西亞 （卡城）

我們在圖書館用完餐，即搭乘大眾交通工具，先是火車，然後地鐵，最後轉搭機場大巴到達IST 機場。

上午參加 City Walk的時候，我們就把要帶去卡城過兩個晚上的衣物裝在後背包裡面，一路背著行李到機場。IST 的機場新穎大氣，被評選為2024 年全球最佳機場。由於航班 Delay,  等我們抵達卡城酒店 Check In 的時候已經快 11點了（IST to ASR 的航程為 1小時30分鐘）。

在 Youtube 上看到有些人分享他們住在洞穴酒店的經驗，這些酒店也被吐槽，沒有窗戶，又潮濕，整體設備也不足，所以我們選擇了中規中矩的酒店。

這裡有兩個汪星人管家，恪守職責，這麼晚了不但陪我們 Check in, 還跟著服務員領我們到房間。

如果坐熱氣球的話，早上 4 點多就要起床，接車 5點上門，爭取在6 點左右看到日出，8 點回酒店，然後再開始第二段的行程。由於沒有坐到熱氣球，我們慢慢享用酒店提供的自助早餐，即便式樣眾多，但是想要放在盤中的食物很有限。無論如何，今天的行程非常艱辛，我們都把胃塞得滿滿滿。9點鐘導遊和司機來酒店接我們。

Cappadocia  是位於土國中間的一個區域名稱，其中最受觀光客青睞的小鎮叫做 Goreme （格雷梅），它擁有特殊的岩石地形，和豐富的歷史古蹟。一般私家團用顏色來區分不同的路徑： Red Tour 是北上的行程，Green Tour 則為南下。由於我們這個行程是董女士精心設計的，我就樂得輕鬆，只要上車睡覺，下車尿尿，完全不用大腦。

第一站來到Uchisar Castle 烏其沙城堡，這是拜占庭時代人民��了躲避伊斯蘭的攻擊，躲入洞內生活流傳下來的古蹟。

這種特殊地貌，並有異域風情的景觀非常符合我對旅遊探索的追求。

之後來到Pigeon Valley鴿子谷，它是古早時候居民想要收集鴿子糞便作為農作化肥，所以搭建這些鴿子屋來吸引牠們來【落肥】。

下一站是Kaymakli Underground City 凱馬克勒地下城，這個洞穴是羅馬帝國時代，基督教被伊斯蘭教攻打，以致基督徒避難於此。洞穴中雖然有【三室一廳】但是非常簡陋，看得出當時生活的艱苦。

遊客要哈腰低頭，半爬半走的穿入每一個細窄的通道，稍不留神就會滑倒，撞壁，或者磕到腦袋。

左下是磨穀物的廚房。

這次探訪，不但見證了歷史，更是一段別開生面的經歷。

Day 28 - 3 October - Avanos (Cappadocia)

Woke up at 5! To get our taxi to the place where the hot air balloons take off from. We thought about getting a flight but they were like £400 each because there had not been flights for the few days before. But seeing them take off as the sun rose was pretty magical in the landscape. Cappadocia has these crazy rock formations due to the fact the rock is sedimentary rock formed by volcanic ash, topped with later basalt on top from subsequent eruptions. The whole landscape has these pillars and valleys that are very striking. He other really amazing thing is all the cave houses that have been built by peoples in the area all the time from the Hittites and later by early Christians and Greek communities.

Our fomo was lessened when the balloons seemed to land almost as soon as they took off, some before we even left the take off area. There were so many people taking ridiculous photos, such as in the back of classic convertibles, in their wedding dresses or my personal favourite; a guy who drove up late when most of the balloons were gone and then got his girlfriend to take a video of him doing MMA and boxing moves with the balloons in the background. I wasn’t sure what this meant for modern masculinity but it seemed significant.

We then went to Goreme Open Air Museum which was walking distance from Goreme town (itself walking distance from where the balloons took off). It was very expensive and I saw in reviews very crowded it’s tours. We were there so early though and managed to walk around in a not so packed atmosphere. The museum is of an old monastery complex with some amazing stone churches carved into the rock. They had really interesting frescos in the churches, all of them quite damaged. Some of them had been restored and were really nice. The museum is a unesco world heritage site but had been restored in some places in quite a haphazard way. One church was best preserves because it had less natural light and was restored but you had to pay another 6 euro to go in there (worth it considering it was by far the best thing and the entrance was 20 euro).

After this we walked down to Goreme and had a really average and expensive meal (I think this is what Goreme is) and then went to the post office to post our massive backlog of post cards. We then walked down and walked the ‘Love Valley’ trail which had some ‘interesting looking’ rock formations and a path that followed the river that runs through the valley in the winter. It was hot and we met lots of different people either going the opposite way or as we past them. I had my trusty light scarf that I got in India that managed to keep me mostly shaded, with factor 50 doing the rest.

We then got to Uchisar which has Uchisar Castle the highest point in Cappadocia which is an amazing pointed rock with a castle dug into it in true Cappadocia fashion. On the way we got a coke which then gave me a massive sugar low. I then got a delicious gozleme that was in the lower bit of the castle which sorted me out. It was so good we both got one on the way down (mine had the very strong blue cheese in it).

We then took a local bus back to our town and went to the same wine bar (like locals). There is a massive colony of starlings that live in the trees by the river which come back to roost in an endless murmuration. It seemed that there are french locals who live in Avanos and drink there each night, they even have a dog. The wine is delicious the first night we had white and the second red. We then got a chicken shish on the way home and went to bed as we were very tired.

Day 29 - 4 October - Avanos (Cappadocia)

We had booked a ‘Green Tour’ for the day. It seems that there are 3 tours of Cappadocia, red, green and blue. We had basically done a red tour the day before ourselves but a green was more difficult to do because it required more driving. We had a delicious breakfast in the garden of our hotel, the highlight was cigarillo burek. We took some walnut pastries from breakfast to eat during the day, and then got picked up about 9.15. The tour was with other people and we went around in a mini bus collecting other people, such as a French couple, a few Aussies, a few Chinese people and a few Americans.

The tour consisted initially in taking us to a few panoramas and giving us time to take pictures, and then in classic tourist trap tour fashion, taking us to a gemstone and jewlery shop, giving us a quick chat about the stuff they have for sale and then offering us 20% off rrp. We then went to this random volcanic lake and then for lunch in the village in the Ihlara Valley. This village was right on the river that ran through it and had lots of ruined stone houses, like lots of Cappadocia, which I think were houses of Cappadocian Greeks who were forcibly moved or killed using the violence in and following the First World War and the Greek/Turkish war.

I started reading this journal article about it as the ruins of these houses seem to be everywhere and it is never really spoken about. All the references to Christians and Greek Christians in tours and in the museums is always Byzantine and they speak about how old all the settlements are without speaking about how many were in use all the way up to the 1920s. We then went to this amazing underground city which was about 5 or 6 stories down and carved into the rock. This city was not completely abandoned until 1923, and was used as a hiding place when the community was being attacked. Most houses in the town had a connection to the complex from a tunnel from their basement.

We then went back to the town via another tourist trap shop that did food and cosmetics. They did give us lots of tasters and we bought some menthol and rose oil. On the way back we passed another ruined town called Gore which had loads of stone building ruined on the side of a hill. The bus then dropped us back at the hotel. We then went to the wine bar again and then or dinner.

Day 30 - 5 October - Avanos (Cappadocia) > Kayseri > Dogu Express

Woke up and went for a run to the bus station along the river to check bus times to Kayseri. We are going there to pick up the Dogu Express from there but it doesn’t go till 1am (if it is on time) so we have got a hotel for the evening very close to the station. Because we booked late, we are not in the same couchette, as unless you book out a whole one, we can only go in single sex rooms (we had this on the night bus last year to Istanbul where you could not book a seat beside someone of the opposite sex unless you book together).

We had breakfast in the garden again. It was delicious again which had this lovely pastry with tahini in it called yorosel? We also had apricots preserved in honey which was amazing. The garden is very nice and has beautiful trees in it. We checked out of the hotel but left our bags there, they have a wedding in the garden this afternoon which they invited us to but i think we are going to leave them to it.

We then walked to a cafe on the river and sat at a cafe doing some planning and relaxing. If I was coming to Cappadocia again I would definitely stay in Avanos again, it feels more like a normal town and has nice paths by the river lined with willow trees. It also doesn’t feel as tourist trappy as the other towns we went to. They are currently rebuilding the main bridge in the town which seemed to have broken and the main way across is across this wobbly suspension foot bridge.

We walked round the town trying to stay in the shade as it was roasting, we by chance stumbled upon this really nice restaurant called Gloria Tas Ev, which was hands own the best food we had in Cappadocia. It did the same things as the other places for the same price but was one so much better. It was also in a cave house so was much cooler. We then went off to the hotel to collect our bags, the wedding was in full swing and there was a band playing. The owners who were very sweet insisted that we dance so we did! Their dance moves aligned quite well with mine, just lots of clapping and putting your hands in the air.

We then walked to our bus with all our stuff over the wobbly bridge which was actually very difficult and caught the bus which absolutely bombed to Kayseri. We then took a taxi to the hotel we have for the evening and went for a walk into town. Kayseri is a very buzzy town with lots going on! We had a drink in a cafe inside the old citadel walls, and then went for some delicious rotisserie chicken and rice. We got some final supplies for the Dogu, including going to this amazing bakery and baklava place on one of the main streets. We got lots of nice bread and I got some baklava and it came to about £4 total which in London would have been 4x the price! We are now chilling in the hotel waiting to get the Dogu.
