In this guide, we’ll cover how to get there, where to stay, and the must-see sights. Let’s dive into the magic of this captivating region!

Tumblr media
Cappadocia, a region steeped in history, has been inhabited since prehistoric times. Over the centuries, it has seen the rise and fall of various civilizations, including the Hittites, Persians, Romans, early Christians, Byzantines, Seljuk Turks, and Ottomans.
Perhaps best known for its role as a refuge for early Christians fleeing Roman persecution, Cappadocia boasts thousands of hand-carved dwellings, churches, and underground cities. These remarkable structures, resembling scenes from a Star Wars movie, have captivated visitors for centuries. While George Lucas reportedly sought to film portions of the original Star Wars trilogy in Cappadocia, the Turkish government declined the request.
Today, Cappadocia is a UNESCO World Heritage site and a major tourist destination in Turkey. Drawing millions of visitors annually (3.8 million in 2019 alone), it offers a unique blend of stunning landscapes, historical sites, and unforgettable experiences.

Tumblr media
Churches and rock-carved building of Goreme Open Air Museum (Source). Goreme Open Air Museum Churches This museum is combining during the centuries of different races, cultures, and languages under a roof which makes it a very important center for all humankind's history. You will small and larges churches along the dining halls. These buildings are part of a very huge monastery complex. In total, there are 11 dining halls and churches where can be visited by the visitors. Also, there 18 more churches but it not possible to visit them due to collapsing risk. You will see an iron bar at the doors of these risky churches. You can find the list of churches, chapels, and monasteries  where is open to the visitors below; Girls and Boys Monastery, St. Basil Chaples Elmali Church St. Barbara Chapel, St. Katerina Chapel Snake Church Dark Church Carikli Church Tokali Church Girls Monastery These churches can be separated into two groups based on their architecture and times; columned churches and snake churches. Columned churches have holistic murals (Dark, Elmali and Carikli Churches) and snake churches have an independent, no-story telling painting (Girls Monastery, The Serpentine Chruch, St. Barbara and St. Katherina Chapels). Monastery of Monks and Nuns When you enter the Goreme Open Air Museum you will see this magnificent rock carved building at your left. You can only visit the first two floors of this 7-floored Monastery of Monks and Nuns. Connections between the floors of the Monastery of Monks and Nuns were made by using tunnels like at the Kaymakli and Derinkuyu Underground Cities. You will see the dining hall and kitchen on the 1st floor while there is a ruined chapel on the 2nd floor. There is the church on the 3rd floor with three apses but it is closed to the visitors due to security issues. Also, there is a fresco which represents the Prophet Jesus directly carved over the rock and embroidered with red ornaments on both sides. Just in front of the Nuns Monastery, there is Monks Monastery where has 4 floors. Due to erosion, the connection between the floors collapsed or closed of Monks Monastery and only the entrance floor is open to the visitors. St. Basil's Chapel Chapels are the resting places of the important figures in history with other couples of other small graves and tombs. St. Basil's Chapel is located at the entrance of the muesum and it built around the 11th century for the St. Basil. There are a couple of graves of the important figure at the Narthex section where is separated from the main part of the church with columns.
