Excerpts from an interview with Jonathan and Maria Friedman at the Los Angeles Times by Charles McNulty, with photos by Justin Jun Lee:
Hopefulness and regret are calibrated to perfection in a revival that ought to be filmed before it closes July 7. I’ve seen the New York production twice, and the psychology only deepens on subsequent viewing.
The key to making this work — which is to say making us care — is the performance of Groff, who humanizes Frank’s choices without sentimentalizing his arc. Frank can come off as a narcissist, a guy who can’t resist whatever shiny object happens to be in front of him. But Groff, who received Tony nominations for his performances in “Spring Awakening” and “Hamilton” and deserves to win for his beautifully layered work in “Merrily,” reveals what Mary and Charley see in him and don’t want to give up on: an answer to their dreams of fulfillment — romantic in Mary’s case, artistic in Charley’s.
Groff was fresh from filming HBO’s “Spring Awakening: Those You’ve Known,” a reunion concert with the show’s original cast and creative team, when casting director Jim Carnahan asked him about his interest in “Merrily.” He immediately watched the London production on YouTube and was struck by an image from the opening number that matched something he had just re-created for the “Spring Awakening” doc.
“Frank walks out with a red folder, and Mary and Charley come out and stand in the exact positions that John Gallagher Jr. and Lea Michele stood in at the end of ‘Spring Awakening,’ with the girl over the left shoulder, the guy over the right,” he said, speaking from his dressing room at the Hudson Theatre. “That is the final bit of ‘Spring Awakening’ and I was like, ‘Oh, that’s so weird. I just lived that.’”
But it was one of Frank’s lines that really clinched the deal for Groff: “I’ve made only one mistake in my life. But I made it over and over and over. That was saying ‘yes’ when I meant ‘no.’” “When I heard that,” Groff said, “I went, ‘Oh, my God. I have to play this. I have done that. I’m just learning how to not do that. Yeah, I get him.’”
“I cast Jonathan for many reasons,” Friedman said. “One, because he’s absolutely brilliant. But I cast a big heart, a beating heart.”
“The amusement and bafflement of having a go at life and everyone wanting a piece of you — that is the place that Jonathan works from,” Friedman said. “Everyone wants a piece of Frank. That’s what happens with brilliant people. Jonathan is not just brilliant and beautiful but also one of the kindest men. And kindness is central to this production.”
Groff, who was exceptional in the short-lived HBO series “Looking” about a group of young gay men living in San Francisco, said that, from “a queer perspective,” he could identify with the way Frank represses parts of himself to please others.
“Growing up closeted, I became an expert at dodging questions and shining a light on other people,” he said. “This can create a relationship dynamic where you’re in a constant state of service to others — like the perfect son who’s hiding something. That stereotype feels connected to the way Frank supports everybody’s dreams, talents, neuroses and needs. He’s able to do it because he’s full of passion and genuine love for those people.”
So how exactly did Friedman, Groff & Co. finally solve the riddle of “Merrily”? By approaching it the way they might a play by Shakespeare or Chekhov, sifting through the lyrics as though they were lines in “Hamlet” and digging into the psychology of the characters as though mining subtext in “Uncle Vanya.”
This revival, fittingly, has been a team effort. And the ensemble’s collaborative joy only reinforces our sense that, however much Frank, Charley and Mary may bitterly disappoint one another, their bond will always be the best thing that ever happened to them.

Matthew McNulty is a very nice-looking man, but I think he was miscast as Jem Merlyn in Jamaica Inn. It is simply not plausible that a man with those vibes could be the charismatic brilliant mastermind behind a mass-murdering gang: in other words, McNulty's Jem is not a believable red herring, and so, for watchers of the miniseries, there is no true suspense around the question of who the real mastermind behind the Jamaica Inn gang is.
More importantly, though, the fact that for most of the book Mary believes Jem Merlyn *might* be the gang's mastermind is of central thematic importance in the novel. Mary knows that when her Aunt Patience married Joss Merlyn, there were virtually no red flags to indicate that Joss Merlyn would become the monster that he is today. Joss used to be charming, the way that Jem is charming now. To Mary, this proves that any man, no matter how charming, might well contain the seeds of great evil within him, and therefore, to choose to love a man is a very dangerous choice for a 19th-century woman to make. In the worst case scenario, he could turn out to be a killer; in the best case scenario, he would be difficult to live with, would expect her to cook and clean, and would make her give up her most cherished dreams (the way Jem actually does at the end of the novel!).
Mary is afraid that if she lets herself fall for Jem, she could end up just like her Aunt Patience, and this is the main source of conflict/tension in the novel's romance plot. This is why the scene where Mary admits to Jem, "I was noticing your hands; they remind me of your brother's" is not just hot but also the most important scene in the book. Book!Mary is a lot more passive than miniseries!Mary, sure, but this passivity is a conscious choice she makes because she knows that, as a 19th-century non-aristocratic woman, the calculus of romantic love is not tilted in her favor. As a smart pragmatic woman, she knows she stands to lose a great deal by taking action.
I understand that the makers of the miniseries wanted to make the Jem/Mary romance more palatable to contemporary viewers with modern sensibilities, but by making Jem so soft / sweet / bumbling / willing to be an equal partner in a relationship with Mary, they ended up completely undermining what du Maurier was trying to say in the book. The book's ending is not *supposed* to feel like a purely happy ending. Mary ends up giving up a *lot* in order to be with Jem. She ends up choosing romantic love, but she pays a not-insignificant price for it. She ends up choosing to partner up with a man who, for much of the book, she seriously believed could be a cold-blooded killer. And unlike, say, Catherine Morland in Northanger Abbey, she wasn't 100% baselessly wrong to feel that way about him, either. All this nuance unfortunately gets steamrolled over in the miniseries.

[People I'd like to get to know better]
I was tagged by @pointyhatspointyears for this, so here you go!
Last Song: Over My Head by Lit. Friend of mine got me feeling nostalgic and I have to listen to it again lol
Favorite Color: Green with some reds and blues coming in second.
Currently Watching: Mostly video essays on filmmaking or improving your writing technique. Recently I've been enjoying videos from Syntopikon and Writer Brandon McNulty and have learned much from both.
Last Movie: It's been a long time, but iirc it was either Spider-Man: Across the Spiderverse or One Piece Film: Red. Both I loved quite a lot.
Sweet/Spicy/Savory: I am definitely a spicy/savory person. My sweet tooth fizzled out over the years lol
Relationship Status: Single but not necessarily looking. If it happens, it happens. Being ace doesn't help with the awkwardness either...
Current Obsessions: I'm currently very deep into writing Astraea's final story. I began writing it shortly after publishing The Sharlayan Witch, and I am nowhere near calling it done lol
Once it's complete I'll be free to move on to my next writing project, which will be much smaller in scale and would leave me the time I need to return to my favorite passion - video editing.

i'm done with nopixel after last night. you got any good suggestions? can be crim or not too
This is gonna be a long post with different suggestions. I also will say to use the hasroot pages for all the servers I am going to mention. More after jump!
ONX - A lot of the good people from NP and Ignite who cared about RP over "content" based "pogs per minute" are over here. WG is very active over there recently helping with updates and is putting out daily patch notes. This is a different server from about 2-3 months ago. I'll admit that I don't watch a lot of crim in general, but some of the really great accounts include:
Myles_Away - His main character right now is Harold, the captain of the LSSD/Grapeseed SD. He also recently brought back his NP main, Connor Stubble. Harold/Stubble is mainly active during shift 1, but you can see him pull out different characters throughout the night as well. He is currently using his pirate character to fuck with Dr. Q
Vondill - He plays Newton Weems, a textbook "beta cuck" cop for the LSPD. He mainly plays in shift 3, but the majority of the city rn wants Weems dead for different reasons.
Mattrp - He plays JR Nixon. (The JR totally means Jack Ripley btw). He is the Lt of the Highway Patrol, essentially the troopers without the trooper name. You will likely remember him for his NP character, Trooper Jack Ripley. He is active during late shift 2 into shift 3.
S0upes - He plays a whole shitton of characters on Purple and ONX, but on ONX he mainly plays Apples, the lead of towing lot LOT Q. He gets into a lot of shit on Apples too. Last I watched, he was having beef with another tow lot. He also brought back his NP character, Silas Grimmer recently. S0upes also plays Adam Sosuke, the genius behind the Moonlight Cabaret, which is totally not a knockoff of the Yakuza games. He is very active in shift 1 into early 2
wtfmoses - He plays AG Salvatore Greco, his Ignite character he brought over to ONX. He is better known for his NP characters George W Nelson and Derek McNulty. He has recently took a step back from some of the AG duties, and he also streams Red Dead content and a crim, but I haven't watched enough of anything that isn't Greco. He is all over the place, but he mainly stays in late shift 1 and almost all of 2.
Momo - She is one of the newer players to rp in general, but she is great. Her main character is the Game Warden, and eventual Lt, Mickey Faraday. Mickey does a lot of other stuff in town on her off time including helping put together the concert for Pride Month. She also plays one of the police K9s, Luna. She's all over the place, but she mainly stays in shift 1 and 2.
Bananaduck - This name should be familiar to posters on here. He is best known for his NP characters including Holden Maddox and Chuck Danger. His main(s) on ONX include Holden's grandson, Edward Maddox. Edward is a balls to the wall cop who is also a massive slut and will fuck any woman that breathes at him. He is currently in conflict right now because his ex gf found out about his new gf. He also dabbles in Holden from time to time as well as Billy Sprinkle. Depending on the day, he is usually late shift 3 into almost all of 1 and part of 2.
Jonthebroski - Another name that is well known for his NP character. He played the beloved cop turned crim Johnny Divine. Over on ONX, he plays Wayne Carcano, a cop that is obsessed with baseball and is learning the ropes from Bill Raptor. Jon mentioned that he wants to take Baastards to ONX as well, so maybe we will see Divine in the future on ONX. Wayne is usually active late shift 2 into a large chunk of 3.
luka_aus - He is known for his NP characters including Luka Kozlov and Holden Maloo, both characters have yet to hit ONX, but I believe they're made as well as some of his other NP characters. He has been going hard on his cop character Marik Chapman, a good ol boy from England. He is seen a lot with Bill Raptor and recently made full deputy. Luka has mentioned that one Chapman made full deputy, you would see more of his crims, including Kozlov who is a crim now. (Imagine how it's gonna be the first time he sees Stubble again!!)
cocobrooklyn - She came over from Ignite, where she plays/ed Barbara Capo. A lot of watchers of old 3.0 NP say that her cop on ONX reminds them a lot of Martell. She plays Sloan Morgan Slaughter. A cop trying to redeem herself after an unfortunate accident led to her being fired for a short time. She isn't as active streaming as some of the others on this list, but she also plays a character on Purple who hangs around with Fingle Dan a lot. Sloan is usually around shift 2, but coco is a degen and is all over the place.
Fozwo - He came over from Ignite as well. His Ignite character is Mickey O'Shea. His ONX character that he mains is Ranger Danny O'Shea, a James Bond loving madman who jumped off Mt. Chilliad multiple times dressed up as Bond to bug test the new parachutes for the admins. Danny cares a lot about the wild in the forests of San Andreas, and he cares a lot about the Game Warden. I just recently started watching him myself, but I've really enjoyed his recent streams. Danny is around mainly in shift 1.
aleks - A name that should be very familiar to anyone who watched NP back in 2.0 and 3.0. Aleks is best known for his cop, which he has brought over to ONX and is now the Director of Public Safety, Bob Smith. Bob is currently bald and in a wheelchair because of an assassin trying to kill him. His streams on Bob are really cozy if you like meeting rp, which I personally really like. He also plays the owner of TurboMax, one of the mechanic shops in town, Maksim Volkoff. He has a handful of other characters, but these are the ones that make streams the majority of the time (RIP Dr. Soupes)
D4N1ELLE - She should be familiar to NP watchers as former HOA member Quimbley Hayabusa. She is going by the same name on ONX, but she is the Medical Director. She spends a lot of time either talking with Bob or hanging out off duty with people like Sean. If you watched her on NP, there are subtle nods back to her former husband, Jerry Sweets, who passed away in a waterslide accident. She always keeps a picture of her and Jerry in her office, and her ties with Stubble are strained now because of the accident.
New Day - New Day is a beast that is totally different from NP, Purple, or ONX. New Day focuses more on long term storytelling over pings and the fast paced story that most servers run with. This is one of my favorite servers, and for a while, I was considering trying to get a spot on the server. I have some friends that either do admin work or play on the server too. The only downfall is that majority of the player base doesn't stream or they stream on YT rather than Twitch.
Homesikh - this is my go to streamer for New Day. I absolutely love both of his characters too. He plays Larry Tate, leader of the Black Lotus Motorcycle Club. Larry cares deeply about the club, but will fuck you up if you do anything stupid too. Larry is best described as "kind, yet cruel." He also plays Kyle Jacobs, his cop character, who runs K9 a lot too, but I mainly watch for Larry because ufff
WhatMuppet - He plays Barry Hill, an absolute shitter, but really when he's not fucking around with his friends, he is leading the Troopers. He's been kinda MIA for a while, like with the rest of the streamers I would usually suggest for ND people, but it is what it is
#messages#message#newday rp#onx#shut up kristen#i could suggest so many onx people btw but ill start with this

Y’ALL NEED TO STOP ARGUING ABOUT BILLIE EILISH I SWEAR
She was obviously just being funny and in the comments of her post, it looks like other queer public figures (JVN, Lucy Dacus, Amybeth McNulty, Stevie Boebi, Alix Traeger, even Autumn Kennedy who runs tstourtips) are playing along in the comments. I think it’s heartwarming!
Yes, it’s clear she personally does not want to let the topic of her queerness overshadow her art in interviews, and she wasn’t quite ready for that follow up question from the Vareity interviewer. She looked nervous. she wanted to be able to come out casually and move on. (Perhaps she was just tired of being assumed straight or called a queerbaiter, and it was as simple as needing to quickly clear up public misconception. Which is so fair.)
> Especially considering how she was in good spirits during the red carpet interview in question (watch the video, just please watch the video and see for yourself), it’s obvious she’s just trying to lighten the mood (for both herself and everyone else) with that IG caption.
All of that said, she could have taken into account that the media and public can be both dumb and malicious, and that they would try to twist her funky li’l IG vent out of context and then blame the sweet reporter, who was quite nice (plus queer and PoC herself!). To an extent Billie should have expected and prepared for the polite follow-up questions, considering that her ideal world (where sexuality isn’t a big deal) isn’t the world we’re living in yet, especially outside of rich celebrity circles. It is important information that she should clarify, even for her own protection from the media/public trying to twist her initial vague statements about attraction to women this way or that. Her team prepared her poorly.
(We can make the argument that the Variety reporter could perhaps have started with “Are you comfortable answering questions about your sexuality?” … but I’m sure if at any point Billie had said “Actually I would rather talk about my music or fashion right now,” the reporter would have immediately complied anyway. I think she makes it quite clear that she is a part of the community, and ally and a safe space and well intentioned. Billie was just put on the spot, she didn’t think of that route. And she wanted to vent on IG, because it must be so much to deal with when millions of people and the fucking BBC is suddenly talking about your sexuality. That’s all.)
Still, I agree with y’all in that Billie’s wording on the IG post was poor considering how the masses are unsurprisingly thinking of it as an accusation. Perhaps most importantly, using the word “outing” lightheartedly is tone deaf considering recent events where celebrities have been forced to come out or actually outed. And that’s something Billie could take away from the absolute media clusterfuck this is becoming.
Finally, I agree that she is very privileged and has a lot of influence she could use to support the LGBTQ+ community. But she’s still a person and she deserves to “come out” (or like, just start talking about her queerness) and have people not make a big deal about her identity if that is what’s most comfortable to her. This is a right all queer people should have regardless of their status. She doesn’t owe it to us to immediately become a queer spokesperson. Identity is hard for everyone. You guys are quickly forgetting how people accused her of queerbaiting back when she put out the Lost Cause MV and captioned a photo “i love girls”. (Why people are obsessed with labels, and the nuances of it are a whole other rant for another day, but I digress.) And honestly? She’s so right, leave her alone. She’s had fucking enough. Let queer people be.
TL; DR: Billie is not mad at any reporters for “outing” her. Billie doesn’t think anyone “outed” her in the first place! Billie is just annoyed that a big deal was made of her sexuality after she started talking about her queerness (which she did, intentionally and of her own accord, and also confirmed that it was a coming out of sorts from her end). She simply did not feel ready to talk about it again at 11:00 AM on the red carpet and all the attention was nerve-wracking. So she was venting using (albeit tone-deaf) hyperbolae on an IG post. The reporter was great, too, and absolutely should not be canceled. I hope this clears it up.

Okay babies, first girl on here is the cutie in my pfp
Anne Cordelia Shirley Cuthbert (Awae) was an orphan girl mistakenly placed in the Cuthbert's siblings' house. They decided to keep her and raise her.
Anne of Green Gables (books and movies) and Anne with an E are different in forms but not in essence.
The canadian movies' adaptation are closer to the books' story : a slice of life about a girl finding a family and friends and making her way into the world. It is light-hearted (until book 4 I think ? And 3rd movie), cozy and reassuring (okay Matthew and Ruby die but I swear the story is still very wholesome). I stopped at book 3 tho bc book 4 is about Anne after college and I'm not done with my cursus studies yet and I need to parallel her story, it feels right to walk together on the path of life or whatever
What makes me say Anne stays Anne throughout adaptations is the fact I can identify to Anne with an E, Anne of Green Gables movie and Anne of Green Gables book
•Anne with an E was my very first adaptation of Anne I saw, (back in 2020 covid first quarantine in the country I live in) and I got OBSESSED. This Anne is passionate about books, stories, writing, nature, collecting things on the floor and magic in mondain. She has a sharp moral compass and is always ready to defend social causes she considers important. The only difference between us is that she is as extroverted as I am introverted. But I admired the way she would leave a mark on all the minds of people she met. Also I was a hot-headed teen once too and was pretty much subject to strong emotional releases. Turns out I was autistic all along and Anne is very autistic coded too so it made me happy to share another feature with her kcjdjdkd (also Amybeth McNulty did an amazing job as Anne🌸)
•I think book Anne was my second representation. A new edition was coming out and the covers were too gorgeous to not buy them. Also I wanted to read the books so much since I hyperfixated on the show for a long time. I read book 1 in one night, sobbing by the end at 3 in the morning bc Matthew died (it was awful I was shaking). I then read to the 3rd book, and seeing very emotional Anne becoming calmer, getting a scolarship, fighting for her education even when she was struggling with money, working with kids, making it to college, renting a house with her friends and working on the side made me feel SO SEEN. I officially started working at 15 and never stopped until I was 21. I worked in a fast food, then with kids. My family doesn't have a lot of money so I had to handle myself most of the time, with scolarships, my savings and random babysittings, especially when I started my art school journey. That's why I want to read the 4th book once I finish my cursus. Cause we're so similar I want to keep this feeling of walking side by side.
•Anne from the movies is a cutie. She's a bit sillier than Awae but the core remains. She's a hot-headed red head full of dreams and ambitions, who's following her heart whenever it is possible. Then comes the war but her determination remains. She is strong, she is goal oriented and she gets over the obstacles on her way, helped by her two arms and solid shoulders. I like to imagine that's how I've been until now, a fighter.
Of course, other characters are lovely but Anne will remain the little girl I was and hopefully, the determined woman I could become 🌸
My father watched Anne with an E, he cried all of season 3 and said Anne reminded him of my sister and I and that was probably the nicest thing he could have said about me ever
Anyways, I love Anne ♥️

I’ve finished watching ‘Anne With An E’. I thought it was a really great show in many ways. Especially the writing. Didn’t really care for the Shirbert romance. I felt like they left that one a bit too late. Although I enjoy slow burn… the constant back and forth wasn’t enough to cultivate my passion. Although they’re both amazing people in their own right, I just didn’t feel it because the writing was very rushed for it in the end.
Otherwise… to Moira Walley-Beckett…
this show was absolutely exceptional.
I’m so glad I returned to it to finish it. But I am ever so personally aggrieved for you that it was cancelled.
Netflix are real sods. I’m sorry.
Hopefully now that Anne knows that she looks like her birth mother, she’ll stop bagging on her red hair and freckles. Her vanity was a huge annoyance to watch. But she was a character that was a breath of fresh air in that she never lost her imagination even as she grew up into a woman. She just ended up refining it to include, at least reachable, goals and ambitions. Her temper tantrums eventually became very meaningful and impactful. She was a character developed well. That’s why I love coming of age stories. It really does make all the difference when evolution is the focus. I wouldn’t say she was morally grey but they definitely made sure to showcase her flaws and faults and the consequences that came from her actions and choices… which is enough really. I didn’t need much else. I’m just glad she wasn’t your typical protagonist. Yes, she was a good person but she didn’t always do good things or make good choices. That mattered. It also mattered how she corrected her mistakes. By developing on her self-awareness and emotional maturity once she realized where she went wrong. It all served to give a real, relatable and resonatable character. A real gem of characterization in any show.
And Thank You to Amybeth McNulty for portraying her ever so well and knowing where her true heart lies. I’m fairly certain your first audition was a crying scene because you certainly did enough of them. But - along with the character writing - you never once made her seem weak in doing so. Expressing emotion was a strength and not a weakness. I really appreciate that.
