Recycled Timber Decking Melbourne
Recycled timber decking melbourne is an ideal way to create a stylish, functional and environmentally friendly outdoor area. These types of wood composite decking boards are manufactured with a blend of recycled plastic and reclaimed timber, which allows them to retain the natural look and feel of wood without the need for regular maintenance.
The type of timber you choose for your decking depends on the environment in which it will be built. For instance, hardwood decking will generally require more water resistance than softwood. In addition to this, the type of timber will also impact the appearance of the finished product.
If you are unsure about what timber to use, our team can help. We are happy to advise on which timber is best suited to your needs, including the best coating treatment to apply. Just call and we will organise this for you.
We can recommend a suitable timber for your area and give you a free design and quote, without obligation. For more information, call Outside Concepts on 1800 601 674 or visit us in-store.
Reclaimed timber is a wonderful way to incorporate an element of history into your project. Its character and patina can be incredibly eye-catching and lend itself to a wide variety of styles.
These decks are often used in residential and commercial areas as they are very durable and resistant to weathering, mould and termites. They can be oiled, stained or painted to suit the home and garden.
There are several different types of hardwood timbers you can choose from, which are both beautiful and strong. These include spotted gum, jarrah and blackbutt. These are all Eucalyptus species, which means they are also fire-resistant, making them an ideal choice in bushfire prone areas.
The colour of these woods can vary from a dark chocolate to a paler shade of brown. They can take on a lovely silver-grey appearance if left to weather naturally.
Another great choice for timber is treated pine, which is resistant to rot and mould in many environments. It’s also less expensive than hardwoods and is a good budget option.
This is one of the most popular timbers for decking in Melbourne and Australia, due to its natural beauty and strength. The reddish-brown tones of Merbau timber are attractive, and it also has a lower price tag than some other hardwoods.

Hannah visits a tiny yard in Melbourne’s inner-city that is bursting with ideas and productive plants.
Hannah's in Melbourne to visit an inner-city patch that's small on space but big on plants and style. Garden owners, Judy and Andreas Sederof, have transformed a challenging block into a productive patch that is filled with color year-round. Situated in Brunswick east near the Merri Creek, it's filled to the brim with plants and ideas in every inch of this 66sqm garden. Judy describes it as “pretty eclectic, pretty crazy... I just collect plants. I'll see a plant and I’ll love it.” The site has been designed with the house built on the back boundary to leave a bigger space for a garden out the front. The diversity of the garden highlights different types of plants, which take advantage of the various soil profiles. Judy says, “we have quite deep, productive soil here which was nurtured, adding compost and mulch, but it really was pretty good to begin with. Whereas this side of the garden is really all on rock, so it had to be built above the ground.” There’s a lot of colour in this garden and Judy says this is due to her background in design and interiors, “I just love color and I'm always changing the color pallets and getting it to work together.”
Judy and Andreas have been designing sustainable houses for 30 years and built their own with the aim of being light on the land. Andreas says, “the four critical elements are glass, mass, insulation and most importantly orientation. We chose this block because the house faces north which is the optimum angle for sustainable building design, often called passive design.” In this home, the ceiling has 2-feet of insulation which Andreas calls “super-insulation” as it’s double the standardised requirements. “Everything in here is double or triple glazed... and to get this house to 9.5 stars, we had to provide way more concrete or brickwork than this house was planned for,” says Andreas. The sustainable principles that underpin the house can also be found in the garden. Timber used in the wicking beds is Cypress macrocarpa, which is known to be a sustainable timber, and “things like not having any hard surfaces so that the land absorbs the moisture, and it doesn't heat up the building,” says Judy. Pipes direct grey water from the shower to the garden, as well as “two squat rainwater tanks underneath the deck here that are connected to a pump; they collect rainwater from the roof. We use that a lot in summer,” says Judy.
With no bare ground in the planting style, Judy says, “one of the things is to plant heavily so it keeps weeds down. They also provide quite a lot more moisture to the site, so I mulch, but I don't have to weed very often.” Much of the garden is edible, including flowers like nasturtium, marigold and viola. Judy says, “In summer I can grow some of the bigger vegies like eggplants and tomatoes. Over winter, there's more low growing brassicas and herbs.” Judy utilises tent structures and shed walls to grow vegies vertically, as well as wicking beds that were built by Andreas. “They're really high functioning wicking beds,” says Judy, “They store a lot of the moisture, and it wicks up in the soil. I just have to put a light sprinkling of water on top when I'm growing seeds but mostly the vegetables root down quite well.” Judy takes her love of designing interiors to the outdoors and uses a lot of recycled materials, including baskets from old vineyards repurposed as planters, and an eclectic mix of mirrors, sculptures and ornaments found in hard rubbish collections. “I do collect things... I do it innately, I don't think about it that much,” says Judy and in a cool temperate garden when many plants lose their leaves, having these elements really hold the garden together. Even though it's a small space, there's more than enough happening year-round to keep Judy actively planting, improving and making the most of her little productive inner-city sanctuary. “It's a connection with the Earth to me,” says Judy, “it really grounds me... it's very soothing.”

Why Wooden Decking is Perfect for Your Home Backyard
If you’re considering ways to enhance your backyard, wooden decking is a popular choice that combines functionality with style, creating an inviting and natural outdoor space. Wooden decking has long been favored for its timeless appeal, and with advancements in materials and designs, it continues to remain a top choice. Here, we’ll explore ten compelling reasons why wooden decking is perfect for your backyard, alongside insights on selecting the right materials, choosing reliable decking suppliers, and understanding what sets wooden decking apart from other options.
Tumblr media
Natural Aesthetic Appeal
Wooden decking offers a warm, inviting aesthetic that blends seamlessly with the natural surroundings of your backyard. Unlike synthetic alternatives, wooden decking has an authentic charm, creating a welcoming atmosphere that’s perfect for relaxation and social gatherings. Timber is naturally beautiful, with grains, colors, and textures that add a unique appeal to any space.
Durability and Longevity
When sourced from reputable decking suppliers and treated properly, wooden decking can last for decades, withstanding the outdoor elements. Options such as cedar, redwood, and even Modwood decking are known for their resistance to decay, rot, and insect infestations, making them reliable choices for decking material. Regular maintenance, like sealing and staining, helps preserve the deck’s look and ensures it remains durable and safe.
Easy Customization
One of the standout advantages of wooden decking is its versatility. Wooden decks can be customized with various shapes, colors, and finishes to suit your home’s style. They can be easily modified or expanded, allowing homeowners to adjust the layout according to their changing needs. By sourcing wood from a timber shop in the UK, you’ll have a range of materials to choose from, including locally sourced options that support eco-friendly building practices.
Eco-Friendly Choice
Wood is a renewable resource, especially when it is sustainably harvested. Many timber stores focus on providing materials from responsibly managed forests, ensuring a reduced carbon footprint. Wooden decking is often biodegradable and recyclable, adding to its eco-friendliness. By selecting a certified timber shop, you can be sure that your decking choice aligns with green building standards.

Adds Value to Your Property
Installing wooden decking can significantly enhance the market value of your property. Buyers are often attracted to homes with outdoor spaces that feature well-maintained, quality wooden decking. It not only creates an additional area for outdoor living but also boosts curb appeal, which is beneficial if you plan on selling your home in the future. For homeowners, this is beneficial information to consider when investing in outdoor improvements.
Comfortable Surface for All Seasons
Wooden decking is comfortable to walk on, offering a softer surface compared to stone or concrete. It doesn’t retain heat as much as other materials, so it’s pleasant to walk barefoot even in hot weather. With proper treatment, wooden decking can be slip-resistant, providing a safer environment for families with children or elderly members.
Low Maintenance Options Available
Wooden decking today includes options like modwood decking, which requires minimal upkeep compared to traditional wood. Modwood decking is made from a combination of recycled wood fibers and plastic, making it highly resistant to fading, splintering, and warping. This choice is ideal for homeowners looking for the appeal of wooden decking without the frequent maintenance demands.
Great for Outdoor Entertaining
If you love hosting family gatherings or barbecues, wooden decking is an excellent choice. It provides a flat, stable surface perfect for setting up tables, chairs, and even outdoor cooking stations. Wooden decks create a social space where family and friends can gather, whether it’s a small get-together or a larger event.
Flexible Design Options
With wooden decking, you have the freedom to experiment with layouts, levels, and styles. From multi-level decks to creative patterns with inlaid boards, the options are endless. Many decking suppliers offer a variety of wood types, allowing you to mix and match to create your unique design. You can incorporate railings, built-in seating, or planters to further personalize the space.

A wooden deck creates a smooth transition between your home’s interior and the outdoor backyard. By choosing materials that complement your indoor flooring, you can create a unified look that extends your living space outdoors. Wooden decks are perfect for creating continuity in open-plan homes, enhancing the flow between indoor and outdoor areas.
Choosing the Right Materials and Suppliers
When considering wooden decking for your backyard, selecting high-quality materials from a trusted timber shop in the UK is essential. Reliable suppliers will provide you with information on different wood types, their benefits, and maintenance needs. For a low-maintenance yet stylish option, Modwood decking is highly recommended, as it combines the beauty of wood with enhanced durability.
Tips for Wooden Decking Maintenance
While wooden decking is durable, some regular care is necessary to keep it looking its best:
Cleaning: Regularly clean the surface with water and a mild soap to remove dirt and debris.
Staining/Sealing: Apply a stain or sealant annually to protect the wood from UV rays and moisture.
Repair Damages: Inspect your deck for signs of wear, splintering, or loose boards and repair them immediately.
Use a Deck Cover: Consider installing a cover or shade to protect your deck from the elements.
By following these simple steps, you can ensure your wooden decking remains a beautiful and functional part of your home for years.
Why Purchase from a Local Timber Shop?
Opting for a timber shop in the UK comes with several benefits. Local timber shops often provide quality wood that is suitable for the local climate, ensuring your deck remains in good condition over time. Transform Your Backyard: 8 Stunning Decking Board Designs!
Are you looking to enhance your outdoor space and create the perfect backyard retreat? One of the most effective ways to achieve this transformation is by installing a stunning deck. The right decking board can turn your backyard into a versatile and stylish area that’s perfect for relaxation, dining, or entertaining guests. In this article, we will explore eight fantastic decking designs that can elevate your outdoor living area, while also considering the latest trends in decking. Whether you're after a sleek modern look or a rustic, traditional vibe, we've got something for everyone.
Tumblr media
Classic Timber Decking
For those who prefer a timeless aesthetic, classic timber decking remains a popular choice. This design makes use of natural wood to create a warm, inviting outdoor area. Timber decking boards are known for their durability and versatility, making them suitable for a wide range of backyard settings. Plus, when sourced from a reputable timber store in the UK, you can ensure that your decking boards are both high-quality and eco-friendly.
One of the benefits of timber decking is that it can be stained or painted in a variety of shades to suit your personal taste. By keeping up with the latest trend of mixing natural wood finishes with modern furniture, you can create a stylish, functional outdoor space that complements your home’s exterior. However, regular maintenance is key to preserving its appearance. You’ll need to maintain your decking boards by treating them with protective oils or sealants to prevent weathering and extend their lifespan.
Composite Decking for a Low-Maintenance Solution
If you’re looking for a decking solution that offers the look of natural wood without the hassle of constant upkeep, composite decking is the way to go. Composite decking boards are made from a mixture of wood fibers and plastic, creating a durable, weather-resistant material that requires minimal maintenance. This makes it a fantastic option for busy homeowners who want the beauty of wood without the extra work.
When you shop for composite decking at a decking shop in the UK, you’ll find that these decking boards come in a variety of colors and finishes, allowing you to customize your deck to your preferences. Composite decking is also a sustainable option, as many manufacturers use recycled materials in their products. This modern alternative aligns perfectly with the latest trend toward eco-conscious landscaping solutions.
Multi-Level Decking for Visual Interest
If your backyard has a slope or varying levels, consider installing a multi-level deck to make the most of your outdoor space. Multi-level decks add depth and visual interest, creating separate zones for different activities. For example, one level can be dedicated to dining while another is perfect for lounging or sunbathing.
This design allows you to experiment with different decking board materials and finishes on each level, giving your deck a unique look. Working with experienced decking suppliers can help you source the best materials for a project of this complexity, ensuring that each level is built to last and designed for both function and style.
Contemporary Wide Board Decking
Wide board decking is a rising trend in modern outdoor design. By using wider-than-usual decking boards, you can achieve a sleek, contemporary look that feels clean and spacious. Wide boards require fewer joins, creating a more streamlined appearance, which is ideal for minimalist and modern backyards.
The wide boards’ smooth finish pairs well with modern outdoor furniture, and the simplicity of the design emphasizes open spaces. Be sure to visit a timber store in the UK to explore a wide range of wood species and finishes to match your vision.
Rustic Reclaimed Wood Decking
For those who appreciate a more rustic, lived-in aesthetic, reclaimed wood decking offers a one-of-a-kind charm. Reclaimed wood decking boards are sourced from old barns, factories, or even ships, providing a weathered, vintage look that adds character to your backyard. These wooden products can vary in texture and color, making each deck unique.
Reclaimed wood also aligns with the latest trend of sustainability in outdoor design. By reusing materials, you reduce the demand for new wood and lower your carbon footprint. Visit a specialized decking shop in the UK to find reclaimed wood decking boards that suit your style and values.

Decking with Built-In Lighting
To extend the usability of your outdoor space into the evening, consider incorporating built-in lighting into your decking design. Whether you install LED strip lights along the edges of the decking boards or place recessed lights within the boards themselves, lighting can transform your deck into an inviting nighttime retreat.
Lighting not only enhances the ambiance but also improves safety by illuminating stairs and edges. For this type of project, decking suppliers who specialize in outdoor lighting solutions can help you select the perfect fixtures that complement your decking material.
Bamboo Decking for an Exotic Touch
Bamboo decking is a fantastic option for homeowners seeking an exotic yet sustainable material. Bamboo is one of the fastest-growing plants in the world, making it a renewable resource. When properly treated, bamboo decking boards are durable, weather-resistant, and offer a beautiful, unique grain pattern.
Bamboo’s natural resistance to moisture makes it ideal for humid or rainy climates, and it pairs beautifully with other natural wooden products to create a harmonious outdoor space. Visit a timber store in the UK that specializes in bamboo decking to explore this eco-friendly option.
Patterned Decking for a Bold Statement
For those looking to make a bold statement with their outdoor space, patterned decking offers endless design possibilities. By arranging decking boards in herringbone, chevron, or diagonal patterns, you can create a visually striking deck that becomes the focal point of your backyard.
Patterned decking requires precise cutting and placement, so it’s important to work with skilled professionals and reliable decking suppliers to ensure the project is executed perfectly. This design trend is particularly popular among homeowners looking for a unique, high-end look that stands out from the typical horizontal decking layouts.
How to Maintain Your Decking Boards for Longevity
Once you’ve chosen the perfect decking design for your backyard, it’s essential to know how to maintain your decking boards to keep them looking their best for years to come. Proper maintenance will not only enhance the appearance of your deck but also prevent damage from weather, pests, and foot traffic.

Clean Your Deck Regularly
Dirt, leaves, and debris can accumulate on your deck, leading to discoloration and mold growth. Sweep your decking regularly to remove loose debris, and use a gentle cleaning solution to wash away any stains or grime. Be sure to use a cleaner that is safe for the specific type of wooden product you have, whether it's natural timber or composite decking.
Apply Protective Coatings
Timber decking boards require periodic sealing or staining to protect them from moisture and UV rays. Depending on your climate, you may need to reapply these treatments every year or two. Composite decking, while low-maintenance, can also benefit from occasional sealing to maintain its appearance.
Inspect for Damage
Regularly inspect your deck for signs of damage, such as cracks, splinters, or loose boards. Promptly repairing any issues will prevent them from worsening over time, extending the life of your deck.

Eco-Friendly Interiors: Why WPC is a Sustainable Choice
Tumblr media
In recent years, sustainable living has become more than just a trend it’s a conscious lifestyle choice. As we strive to minimize our environmental footprint, every decision we make about our homes plays a significant role. One of the most impactful changes we can make in interior design is choosing eco-friendly materials, and Wood Plastic Composite (WPC) is emerging as a leading option in sustainable building and decor.
In this article, we’ll explore why WPC is an excellent sustainable choice for your interiors and how it contributes to a greener future.
1. What is WPC?
Wood Plastic Composite (WPC) is a hybrid material made from a unique blend of wood fibers and plastic polymers. These materials are combined to create a durable, versatile, and eco-friendly product that is commonly used in decking, flooring, wall panels, and furniture. The plastic used is often recycled, making WPC a more sustainable alternative to traditional wood.
2. Why WPC is Eco-Friendly
a. Made from Recycled Materials: WPC is created using a mix of recycled wood fibers and plastic, which would otherwise contribute to environmental waste. By repurposing these materials, WPC reduces the need for virgin resources and lowers the overall carbon footprint associated with new product manufacturing.
b. Long-lasting Durability: One of the key sustainability factors is WPC's long lifespan. Traditional wood may require frequent maintenance and replacement, leading to increased resource use over time. WPC, on the other hand, is resistant to decay, termites, and water damage, significantly reducing the need for replacements. Its durability translates into less consumption of raw materials and fewer emissions from manufacturing.
c. Less Deforestation: Choosing WPC over natural wood helps reduce the demand for logging and deforestation, a critical step in preserving forest ecosystems. Forests play a crucial role in absorbing carbon dioxide and maintaining biodiversity, making it important to find alternatives to traditional wood that help protect these vital resources.
3. Low Maintenance: A Green Benefit
WPC is easy to maintain and doesn’t require the same treatments as natural wood, such as staining, sealing, or regular polishing. These treatments often involve chemical products that can release harmful volatile organic compounds (VOCs) into the environment. With WPC, you eliminate the need for such treatments, reducing both environmental pollution and your exposure to hazardous substances inside your home.
4. Energy-Efficient Manufacturing Process
The production of WPC generally consumes less energy compared to traditional timber harvesting, milling, and processing. The manufacturing process also generates less waste and fewer emissions, aligning with global goals to reduce industrial energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions.
5. Thermal Efficiency for Better Insulation
WPC’s thermal properties are excellent for insulation, which can enhance energy efficiency in your home. Properly insulated spaces reduce the need for excessive heating and cooling, helping homeowners lower their energy bills and environmental impact. This added energy efficiency makes WPC a valuable option for those looking to create more sustainable living spaces.
6. Versatility and Aesthetic Appeal
One of the greatest advantages of WPC is its versatility. It can mimic the natural beauty of wood while offering a range of colors and textures to suit any interior design style. Whether you want a contemporary look or a classic rustic feel, WPC allows you to achieve the desired aesthetic without compromising on sustainability.
7. Conclusion: A Smart Choice for Eco-Friendly Interiors
WPC is more than just a practical building material—it’s a sustainable choice that aligns with the growing demand for eco-friendly living. By opting for WPC in your home interiors, you’re contributing to reducing deforestation and waste and choosing a durable, low-maintenance material that stands the test of time. Its versatility and environmental benefits make WPC an ideal solution for those looking to create stylish yet sustainable interiors. As we continue to make conscious decisions about our homes, materials like WPC play a crucial role in the shift toward greener, more eco-conscious living. For anyone planning an interior project, WPC stands out as an innovative and responsible choice for a sustainable future. Choosing the Right Material at Your Choice Interior PVC & WPC. Recycled Timber Furniture Melbourne
Recycled timber furniture melbourne is a wonderful way to achieve a high quality home or commercial fit out with a lower environmental impact. Instead of logging new trees, the wood in recycled furniture is sourced from old homes and barns, railway sleepers and other sources that would otherwise be trashed or discarded. These materials are then repurposed into solid and sturdy pieces of furniture which will be loved by family and friends for years to come.
Reclaimed timber is a great option for a modern, sleek home or cafe design, where the furniture needs to stand out but also blend in with the surrounding space. With a wide range of timber species, grains and colours to choose from, you can create a stylish look in your space with unique custom made furniture.
Luke has a strong leaning towards sustainability, and prefers to use sustainably sourced timbers for his work. He derives a lot of satisfaction from repurposing materials that would otherwise be piling up in landfills, into something beautiful and usable. In his Melbourne studio, he creates eclectic custom furniture which goes beyond traditional structures and forms.
Recycled timber is becoming a popular choice for interior designers because it’s not only practical but also environmentally friendly. In addition to using timber, recycled furniture can also be created with reclaimed metal, fabrics and other resourced materials. The benefits of this type of furniture are that it’s cheaper to manufacture, it’s more durable and it can be tailored to suit a specific space or a client’s preference.
