Take a breath, take a step, and find hope for recovery at The Recovery Connection, a transitional living program for women. Located in Winchester, VA, our program delivers quality services that aim to support individuals seeking recovery from alcohol and drug addiction. Our recovery center both believes in and is developed based on SAMSHA’s four major dimensions of sustaining life in recovery: health, home, purpose and community. We respect the importance of traditional drug treatment for those battling the disease, but also find it imperative to foster the process of building a foundation of addiction recovery that will lead to long-term success. By providing recovery housing and a sober living environment, we promote the safety and welfare of our residents as they pursue a challenging transition in their lives. Our hope is to help individuals reach freedom from drug addiction and find a new way to live.
At The Recovery Connection, we understand that substance abuse treatment can be very expensive. Our all-inclusive program is designed to provide cost-effective recovery support services, coordinating with outside clinical providers for additional addiction treatment and outpatient care when needed. We have developed our program in a way that allows women to have all of the accommodations necessary to begin their journey, including food and beverage, linens and basic toiletries. Our strength-based, person-centered approach allows for residents to feel safe and supported during this difficult phase of their lives. Support services in our program include but are not limited to: life skills classes, recovery education workshops, weekly individual progress meetings, communal dinners, gym memberships and aftercare planning.
Accredited through the Virginia Association of Recovery Residences (VARR), our program extends beyond the conventional sober living model by providing a monitored structure as well as addiction help services where staff works with residents on an individual level to promote their strengths and address their challenges. As individuals in long-term recovery, our founders are Certified Peer Recovery Specialists in the state of Virginia and provide empathetic peer support to those struggling with drug and/or alcohol addiction.
At our home, we understand the immense struggles surrounding the disease. Our compassionate staff and supervised structure engages residents in daily meaningful activities that encourage the establishment of healthy relationships with others. In our program, connection is the key.

It’s hard to live with really street level addicts when you aren’t one.
I noticed a sharp difference in approaches to recovery when I lived with two lifelong addicts who - at 50 and 60 decided to turn their lives around. Likely because their bodies were going to give out or they simply hit the end of the line.
One of the problems I noticed was that they had never really done anything in life but be slaves to their addictions. They weren’t educated, never had career level jobs and subsided on welfare or low-paying jobs to get by.
Success was never an option, from birth, it seems for some of them. Born into lower-middle class homes, they were uninspired to obtain an education since it required a lot of work to fund and if they had already started into their addiction, it seemed like an impossible addition to their life as acting drug or alcohol users.
Additionally, things that they experienced in life were not like things most people experience. And, being relatively sheltered by not exploring the world and shutting themselves into addiction, my stories about my life seemed unrealistic and far-fetched.
This type of ignorance became a challenge for me. There was an instance where I was accused of fabricating a job I had because my roommates couldn’t fathom that someone in the same predicament as them would have ever had a skilled job. Explaining the job to them was like reading a story to a baby who didn’t speak or understand English yet. You would show them pictures and emulate sounds and words but nope - nothing.
Being adults, their ability to grasp a world outside their hovels was difficult. If they hadn’t ever heard of it, it doesn’t exist to them.
On a few occasions I started talking about when I lived in South Korea and taught English. This was an incredibly far-fetched experience for them to understand since neither could even pin-point the tiny country on a globe. I also think one of them was a flat earth believer.
Unfortunately, their ignorance turned into rage after I told them about my desire to seek employment and what type of employment I was qualified for. They didn’t have a clue what I was talking about because their experience and expectations for work included service jobs or low-paying unskilled trades work. In their rage and fear of the unknown, they constructed a narrative to try and vilify or disqualify things I said about jobs, or education, because they didn’t want to believe that they lived with someone who did things they could never dream of. I’m not bragging. They could never dream of even getting their teeth cleaned by a professional. This is their level. Neither of them had the drive to complete even simple certificate courses required to work in restaurants.
To summarize - my roommates constructed a story about how the things I said that I thought were pretty normal were actually delusions I had. I never went to school, Korea, had a job etc. It was fairly frightening to realize when I was confronted about it by the owner of the recovery house since she believed the vapid narrative they had created.
I kind of pictured them in a room together like two old witches with warts on their noses, hunching over a crystal ball trying to figure out a way to demonize me since I wasn’t one of them. I wasn’t a cretin. Sometimes I believe that they thought I was making stuff up because things I said I did, which weren’t even that impressive, were really far out of reach for either of them.
Part of me also believes that they did it to get me in trouble since I caught them bitching about trivial things and accusing me of things they did while dozing around on suboxone.
I really hope I don’t see either of them again, because they’re embarrassing. Two simpletons who’ve exceeded the life span of a normal junky only to lurk around in recovery expecting to thrive without ever having developed any skills to immerse themselves in a modern world they had no hopes of joining.
One of the weirdest parts was the dramatic scenes they made to pretend that I was going to hurt them after reporting these ‘delusions’ I had. They’d both run out of the house, grabbing their jackets two minutes after talking to me about something normal.  They were instructed to after the owner of the house granted them her blessings and believed their loosely strung together story about me being delusional because I had a job and did things they couldn’t. Sort of basic things really. But these two were kind of bottom of the barrel types, who’s fingers were still filthy from scraping spoons of residual heroin and other unsavoury things that people at the end of their run did to satiate their drug addictions.
The scariest part is that their word held weight against mine. Im worried about seeing them and them creating scenes where they feign fear and things like that. I don’t know how to adequately explain how little I give a shit about either of them to comfort them enough into believing I’d never do anything to them. But that’s a difficult thing to do since they might take that as insulting. Their mindset and thinking is very primitive.
I don’t want to see them ever in meetings because they might fabricate more things or insinuate things about me.
There’s some deep seeded resentment going on with them. I think it has something to do with maybe being insulted for not knowing much about the outside world after 50 or 60 or 70 years or however fucking old they are.
I’m sort of embarrassed that they’d think I would invest any time or risk doing anything to harm them - what for? That’s insulting to me. No one cares about them - they’re old, weathered addicts with scratchy witch voices and they don’t have anything I want. They don’t have anything anyone wants. They don’t have anything at all.
If there is a way to calculate insignificance, I wish to do so and apply the maximum value assigned to measure insignificance to these two. Im irritated due to the exponential degree to which these two are insignificant but act as though they matter to me, or anyone. I’m insulted. What does that say about me if I give a shit about two hapless old hags like this. Fuck this noise, honestly.

Life Skills Classes
Our residents enter our program from various circumstances including incarceration, inpatient substance abuse treatment, detox stabilization facilities, or directly from home. To us, it doesn’t matter where you someone came from. We commend our residents for taking this step forward and we wish to help them learn how to live free from drug and alcohol addiction. Our classes aim to teach basic life skills such as self-care, resume writing, job interview prep and time management. These groups foster autonomy and independence as individuals lay the foundation for a successful future in recovery.

Intervention Services
We also offer intervention services at Life Change Recovery. People who struggle with addiction are often in denial about their situation and unwilling to seek treatment. They may not recognize the negative effects their behavior has on themselves and others. Intervention helps the person make the connection between their use of alcohol and drugs and the problems in their life. The goal of intervention is to present the alcohol or drug user with a structured opportunity to accept help and to make changes before things get even worse. For more information about our intervention services or our sober living services, contact Life Change Recovery.
