I’ve never really been into the trope, but D&D 3.5 had a lot of “Dragon Aspirant” concepts it kept going back to. Basically a person that tries to ascend to dragon-hood. Off the top of my head: - This was the original deal with Dragonborn, who were “rebirthed” in their dragon form from human origins - Dragonfire Adepts were a base class that gained Draconic Powers as a Warlock gained Eldritch Powers, from bartering with dragons instead of fiends. Their Eldritch Blast is instead a Dragon Breath - Dragon Shamans sometimes worshipped Dragons, and mostly sought to become a dragon themselves - Dragon Disciple is a Core Rules Prestiege Class that draws out their dragon bloodline to ascend to dragonhood - The Sorcerer was originally specifically a class that derived it’s powers from a draconic bloodline, specifically, rather than the more general approach we see now (though this was being phased out even as 3.5 was released, we see it in the association of Kobolds and Sorcerers for example, and it’s implementation in 2e.) For whatever reason they kept going back to this idea, and it seemed like a pretty important part of the game’s identity given it’s emphasis. But I’ve not really seen anyone actually be into that... Perhaps because it is a rather niche subset of dragon myth. There’s enough there that if you wanted to take “Dragon Aspirant” and run with it, you could have a full adventure just about the various ways to become a dragon. Eldren Ring has the Church of Dragon Communions dotted about, and a bunch of creatures spawned as imitations of dragons, which reminded me of that of late. The portrayal of it less as this cool thing and more as a pale mimicry has an element of tragedy to it that I like
