Folding
My manifesto rejects the linearity of time, memory, and experiences. I propose that time is layered and more complex than what can be written in the way of a timeline. This piece, Folding, was initially inspired by a washing machine, but once I began working with the materials, I let them guide me into creating these folds of history.
This sculpture uses curtains from my old apartment that have been hanging for 4 years in common areas and have never been washed. Each curtain has a different amount of wear and tear, adding layers of history to this material.
I combined these artifacts with scrap rebar. Rebar has memory as a material; I added to it by bending and twisting it into new shapes to convey movement and circularity and help the viewer move across the piece. I enjoy using contradictive materials to help me create intimate works.
