Batman: Mask of the Phantasm 4K Ultra HD Review

Released 30 years ago this Christmas, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm comes to 4K Ultra HD for the first time. The story was originally slated for a 'direct to home video' release but was later switched to a theatrical one ... many consider this Bat-flick as the number one cinematic release for the Dark Knight. The filmmaking team is composed of the award-winning core group behind Batman: The Animated Series. Eric Radomski and Bruce Timm directed the film from a screenplay by Alan Burnett, Paul Dini, Martin Pasko and Michael Reaves, based on a story by Burnett.  

VIDEO QUALITY 📽️ :  A-

The renowned animated film has been newly-remastered, the 4K HDR/SD of Batman: Mask of the Phantasm was sourced from the 1993 Original Cut Camera Negative and was scanned at 4K resolution. Digital restoration was applied to the 4K scans to remove dirt, scratches and additional anomalies. While this version gives you the clearest possible picture, it doesn’t hurt the original piece. Exceptional care was given to not touch the film grain or the animation cel dirt that was part of the original artwork. Washing away the film grain had been a major complaint with such WB releases like Max Fleischer's Superman (Blu-ray). I will say that sometimes the images on the screen look blurrier than others, especially when shots zoom in and out of frame. Fans should also note this is the first time since its theatrical release that it is presented in its 1.85 aspect ratio.  

AUDIO QUALITY 🔈 : A

The original 2.0 mix and the 5.1 tracks were remastered to remove and improve defects such as pops, ticks, dropouts and distortion. Voices sound clear, sound effects have a nice punch to them making for an exceptional listening experience and Shirley Walker’s score sounds amazing. I felt totally immersed watching this one at my home theater as the new mix really brings this adventure to life. 

EXTRAS 📀 :  D+

Unfortunately, this release doesn’t have many extras, but does it include an all-new featurette Kevin Conroy: I Am The Knight, which takes a look at the legacy of Kevin Conroy, who voiced Batman for 30 years in film, television, video games and more. The only other minimal extras are a digital copy of the film and a one episode of Justice League: Unlimited (featuring a cameo from Phantasm) which can only be accessed digitally. Sadly, the theatrical trailer was not included either.  I really had wished they beefed up the extras here considering the original Blu-ray release was weak in this area also.  

FINAL GRADE: B+

Although the film itself, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm, is exceptional and the newly remastered 4K version looks fantastic, the extras are very weak which pulls this release down a letter grade. With that said, Batman fans shouldn't hesitate to pick up this updated version of this classic animated movie.

This ask was SUCH a delight, I'm still giggling about it. Obviously I don't wanna spoil stuff, but there is absolutely gonna be a Greyjoy-Harlaw-Stark family gathering (if not several) later on. They've got Things To Talk About, and that's putting it mildly.

I feel like Rod Harlaw & Catelyn would actually get along pretty well (and they're both widow(er)s... hmmmm) and Asha & Arya have soooo much potential, but Alannys HATES Robb's trifling ass for real.

Rickon and Dagmer would get along like a house on fire, and I love the idea of them singing together like Dagmer and Quen used to 🥺 It's about the legacy of love...

Though they would say otherwise, Jene Wellow’s choice of fashion was dated even during their father’s time. Quite unlike Earth’s United States, Safine’s North Sunkiran “Frontier Era” was dominated by kitols, shresed’kals, akretuzhes and cvehcicumas clad in garish large-epauletted leather jackets, tight-fitting two-finger-cut gloves, platformed boots and bell-bottomed low-hip denim pants often accompanied by a big, gaudy belt. Sticking to these tragedies of the past just as they stick to their image of themselves as a frontier hero, Jene dresses themself in these antiques and treats their hair like a babe.

At the very least, Jene’s wardrobe’s colors match their identity well enough. They even went as far as to incorporate the colors of Rekton Shal, a god-like kedan they stole power and life from. While their apparel often hides it, the power of Rekton Shal left a visible scar across the entirety of Jene’s torso: it is a neon-orange eyesore resembling a serpent with the head of a fox winding up and over Jene’s left shoulder from their right hip, wrapping down their back and curling around their waist, ending at their belly button. To proudly display their kill, Jene added orange-dyed faux fur to their double-sided black-or-lime jacket’s pauldron, orange trim to the jacket’s zipper line and their black jeans’ pocket edges and hemming, and orange dye to their large black-and-brown mottled mullet.

While Jene Kaliber Wellow certainly has their father’s looks (aside from the brown splotches on their fur) and skills, they luckily took after their mother in wit and wrath. Jene is arrogant and owns it, treating the world like their property. When things don’t go Jene’s way they’re quick to rash decisions, be it mocking people that shouldn’t be mocked or lashing out in anger; but always decisions that result in Jene biting off more than they can chew. Thankfully, Jene has two things they can always count on to get them out of tight spots: The Troubleshooter and the half-akretuzh, half-kitol Roose Zynir, both by virtue of Jene’s father and his legacy.

When Jene isn’t getting themself into trouble, they’re bringing trouble to others as the “leader” and gunslinger of the Brir plor Brud tvol Brours. (literally “Hire for Murder and Pain”) While Roose is the real figure of leadership in the BBB, Jene brought them all together in one way or another, all in ways indicative of Jene’s maverick streak. Roose was forced into joining and eventually leading on account of the blood oath he swore to Trez Wellow. Wanderlust, the cvehcicumi powderkeg, was lured into the group by Jene’s promises of a grand and glorious journey across the world. Halios fan Janfeed, a prodigious kud’kal engineer, joined the BBB after Jene killed her father and offered her a job and shelter. Coda & Reave, a Gle-class folufedri and Oned-class drone respectively, were defeated by Jene and Wanderlust before being reprogrammed by Halios. Suthan Garren-Timir would have been Jene’s assassin, but Jene seduced him into bed with themself and the BBB. Rightly, more than half of the BBB should want Jene dead, but the charm of Jene’s overwhelmingly aggressive nuisance personality has grown on them like a bad fungus. Jene would just chalk it up to the caliber of their natural glamor.

Ironborn (those who could reave and were not captured peoples) did not farm. Those that did farm were the thralls.

I agree the lines are blurry, but the thralls =/= ironborn, and ironborn had practical, customary, and legal different “rights” from thralls, since thralls’ kids were automatically free and saltwives’ kids were considered just as worthy to inherit their father’ privileges and authority as the rockwives’ kids. 

However, there was more than one “class” that did the menial work that supported the economy and where one of them actually did have different freedoms and practical, sociopolitical capabilities. 

And a working class like we’d be familiar with, however, comes from a setting where the priority was to produce as many things as possible to sell on, and then onto a capitalist market. Which doesn’t exactly translate well onto a feudalist or a thrall-based economy.

I mean to make it clear that while the thralls and peasants are a “working class” in that they do most of the labor for this economy:

thralls were were not the only ones working and they, as a group, were forced to work in a way that ironborn fishers/peasants/serfs weren’t

fishing, given that mark of prestige, allows the fishers (non-thralls) to be treated better and and actually reave so they could be a part of those crews and make legacies for themselves

a working class is employed and paid to work and have some autonomous legal and customary rights while still being of the same “nation” as their bosses and supervisors, still being “citizens” and free people AND this isn’t a near-secularized capitalist society

Different powers.

But if I am being too pedantic, I hoped to still make it clear to paint a picture of where that cognitive dissonance comes from by describing how these people would think of themselves so that that doesn’t get lost when we unearth how fallacious and unjust the system itself was. Their (the aristocrats) perception and the subsequent social hierarchy needs description and to be made distinct, because the consequences of being ironborn thralls vs freedmen vs saltwives vs rockwives were different enough that sliding into being thought of as the same sort of “working class” as capitalist societies doesn’t work.

Again, thralls, because they could not reave nor fish were not really “ironborn”. They would not be considered “ironborn” by those who captured them, those in charge, those who call themselves “ironborn”. Thralls weren’t completely considered a part of those societies by those who owned them. Because, again, they were owned and not full “citizens” or persons.

You’re right in that “rights are not just a matter of formal law, they can also be a matter of custom and practice (especially in a pre-modern society where legal systems are less formalized and governments are weaker), because those factors have influence over the behavior of the Ironborn, what kinds of behavior they would consider acceptable and what they wouldn’t, what kinds of things they’d do and what they wouldn’t.” 

Except “the government” wasn’t “weak” so much as not centralized and divided into different families/houses with differing levels of active power. Because those families are the “government” whose word are enforced by just their word. 

Again, the presence of force along with the use of religion to, for lack of a better word here, “indoctrinate” those thralls (some thralls used to come from Seven-worshipping locations -- again, they were not ironborn at all because they were literally kidnapped) reinforced the entire system of thralldom to lower resistance and conflict.

“Also, given that Quellon Greyjoy emancipated the entire thrall population a generation ago, there are large numbers of Ironborn who were thralls.” Other than how thralls =/= “ironborn”, Quellon’s son, Balon, immediately reinstated thralldom. Such a thing could never happen (in that the effects are immediately felt) like how laws and amendments for working-class rights happened. The status of thralls or being one has a mutability coming from the will of their master/lords.

I am still not saying that thralls and peasants are not manual laborers, I’m saying they have a different quality of class all the same. Class has both stayed the same and transformed from the medieval era into the industrial/digital.

But then again, maybe you’re right. I do have the habit of over-description. 

I'm afraid the Ironborn economy confuses me. They spit on those who buy things, but they don't buy, how do they get anything? They can't raid that much to support (I think) a million and a half people, they don't produce much food (Theon says the farmers have the hardest life). What, exactly, keeps these islands going?

The way to understand the Ironborn economy is to understand that it functions under massive cognitive dissonance: the vast majority of the population actually works for a living, they're fishermen and farmers and miners and merchants and craftsmen, etc. The Iron Islands aren't the richest of the Seven Kingdoms - as I've said before, they're likely the poorest - but they have industry and trade and fishing and some farming.

The issue is that they have this lunatic ruling class that insists that Ironborn absolutely should not be doing any of the productive activity that actually makes the Iron Islands' economy function, and that ruling class has this whole ideology (the Old Way) that gets into the heads of even a bunch of the people who aren't part of the ruling class, such that you have a whole bunch of fishermen who show up to the Kingsmoot and chant along with the rest, because owning a fishing boat means you're a reaver at heart and certainly not some New Way member of the working class.

Despite Minnie’s Jealous trait, her and Tina became really good friends! Probably one of her first true friends, since the constant mischief tends to drive people away. I like to think they bonded over Johnny’s silliness.
