OnePlus Nord 2 5G First Impressions: Still Finding North
OnePlus Nord 2 5G First Impressions: Still Finding North, The OnePlus Nord 2 5G starts at Rs. 27,999 in India.
The OnePlus Nord was launched in July last year to specialize in the sub-Rs. 25,000 price segment. As the OnePlus flagships got costlier and costlier, the OnePlus Nord promised good performance at a somewhat cheaper price. Now, it's been discontinued, clearing the way for a good cheaper model, the Nord CE 5G, and its true successor, the OnePlus Nord 2 5G. This new OnePlus smartphone has an improved camera setup and a MediaTek Dimensity processor. Does it still deliver the OnePlus experience? I got my hands on the OnePlus Nord 2 5G and here are my first impressions of the device.

OnePlus Nord 2 price in India
The OnePlus Nord 2 starts at Rs. 27,999 in India for the bottom variant, which has 6GB of RAM and 128GB of storage. There are two more variants of the OnePlus Nord 2, one with 8GB of RAM and 128GB of storage, and eventually 12GB of RAM with 256GB of storage. These are priced at Rs. 29,999 and Rs. 34,999 respectively. I had the top-of-the-line variant with me for review.
The OnePlus Nord 2 looks familiar and seems in situ alongside the OnePlus 9 series and therefore the OnePlus Nord CE 5G (Review). learning the OnePlus Nord 2, it instantly feels premium to the touch. it's a 6.43-inch display with a camera hole within the top left corner for its 32-megapixel selfie shooter. The OnePlus Nord 2 5G sports an AMOLED display with a 90Hz refresh rate and full-HD+ resolution. It also has Corning Gorilla Glass 5 for cover for the display also because of the back.
The mid-frame of the OnePlus Nord 2 5G is formed out of plastic. On the proper side, it's the facility button and therefore the alert slider (which is missing on the OnePlus Nord CE 5G), and on the left are the quantity buttons. I found the button placement to be quite good, and reaching them wasn't a problem during one-handed use. The USB Type-C port, loudspeaker, SIM tray, and first mic are at rock bottom, while the secondary mic is at the highest. The OnePlus Nord 2 5G has dual speakers – the earpiece doubles up because the secondary speaker is for stereo sound.
On the rear, the OnePlus Nord 2 5G features a triple camera setup and therefore the camera module bears some resemblance thereupon to the OnePlus 9R (Review). The camera module consists of a 50-megapixel primary camera with an f/1.88 aperture and OIS. There's also an 8-megapixel ultra-wide-angle camera with EIS and an f/2.25 aperture. These two sensors appear as if they need big lenses while the 2-megapixel mono camera is smaller and sits next to the flash. The OnePlus logo is slap bang within the center of the rear panel.
OnePlus offers the Nord 2 5G in three color options, Gray Sierra, Blue Haze, and therefore the India exclusive Green-Wood. I had a Blue Haze unit with me, and it didn't devour smudges easily. OnePlus also offers a case within the box. The phone weighs 189g and is 8.25mm thick. It doesn't feel very bulky, and one-handed use is feasible.
OnePlus has opted for a MediaTek Dimensity 1200 processor which has been somewhat customized with additional AI processing power to make the Density 1200-AI, consistent with both companies. this is often also a touch surprising since other OnePlus devices thus far are powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon processors. There are 6GB, 8GB, and 12GB RAM options, with 128GB of storage for the lower two and 256GB on the very best one. Storage is non-expandable and therefore the Nord 2 5G only has two Nano-SIM slots with support for dual 5G. there's also support for WiFi 6, Bluetooth 5.2, NFC, and five satellite navigation systems. The Nord 2 5G packs a 4,500mAh battery and comes with a Warp Charge 65W charger within the box.
Buy Now
The OnePlus Nord 2 5G runs OxygenOS 11.3 supported Android 11. My unit had the June Android security patch. The UI is clean and only a couple of Google and OnePlus apps, plus Netflix, were preinstalled. I didn't have any issues navigating through the UI and located it to be intuitive to use.
The side-mounted fingerprint scanner is quick to unlock the device and given the 12GB of RAM that my review unit has, I didn't face any hiccups while multitasking. The “enhanced” MediaTek Dimensity 1200-AI showed tons of promise and it will be interesting to check OnePlus's claims that there are additional camera, gaming, and display features enabled by the AI enhancement. The Realme X7 Max 5G (Review) and therefore the upcoming Poco F3 GT are two smartphones with an equivalent SoC, minus OnePlus' customizations, so it'll be interesting to ascertain how the OnePlus Nord 2 5G fares.
Overall, the OnePlus Nord 2 5G looks like an upgrade over the first Nord in every respect, supported the specs. However, it's gone up in price also, so it'll be interesting to ascertain if this new smartphone still offers good value for money, or whether you would be happier with the Nord CE 5G. I will be able to be putting the Nord 2 5G through benchmarks and camera tests, so stay tuned to Gadgets 360 for the complete review, arising soon.

Vivo's sub-brand iQoo is no stranger to 5G. It has launched four smartphones in India so far, and all of them (including the Z3) support 5G. Since networks have yet to become operational in India, it makes a lot of sense for smartphone manufacturers to not rely only on high-speed data as a selling point. In fact, every manufacturer offering a smartphone priced between $230 $300 has managed to bring something more to the table. Xiaomi offers a 108-megapixel camera on its Mi 10i , Realme's X7 5G gets you dual 5G standby and a 120Hz Super AMOLED display, and the list goes on. This being iQoo's first affordable smartphone for the Indian market, it has gone with the new Qualcomm Snapdragon 768G processor, which should remain exclusive for a while. We have an interesting mix of phones for you this month, all within a budget of Rs 25,000. Most of the devices are recent, but one is a little older that still packs a solid punch at its current selling price. You can expect powerful processors, high-quality cameras, AMOLED screens and high refresh rate displays, among other features, in this budget. Of course, there are a few 5G-ready phones too. So let’s take a look at who made the cut this August.
Best phones to buy under Rs 25,000 in India
iQOO Z3 5G
Let’s get the two 5G compliant phones in this list out of the way, starting with the one from Vivo’s sub-brand. The top variant of the iQOO Z3 5G can be comfortably purchased in this budget. It has an impressive set of specifications and features starting with Qualcomm’s new midrange Snapdragon 768 SoC, along with 8 GB RAM and 256 GB of internal storage. The Z3 has a vibrant 6.58-inch HDR10 compliant Full HD+ LCD screen with 120 Hz refresh rate for smooth scrolling.
Photography on this 5G-ready phone is taken care of by three cameras at the back comprising a 64 MP primary camera, an 8MP ultrawide shooter and a 2 MP macro camera. A 16 MP selfie camera is located in a drop notch at the top of the screen. The iQOO Z3 5G runs Android 11 with FunTouch 11 UI on top. A 4,400 mAh battery keeps the phone running for well over a day of moderate use. The company bundles a 55 W fast charger to juice it up in double quick time.
iQOO Z3 5G price in India: Rs 22,990 for 8 GB RAM/ 256 GB storage (additional Rs 1500 off on Amazon India at the time of writing)
Mi 10i 5G
The Xiaomi Mi 10i 5G (Review) comfortably retains its place in the lineup. It flaunts a 108 MP camera that clicks some crisp shots in various conditions. Giving it company are an 8 MP ultrawide camera, 2 MP macro camera and a 2 MP depth sensor. The 16 MP front camera does a good job with selfies and video calls. As you might have guessed, this phone is 5G compliant and is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 750 SoC, and you get either 6 GB or 8 GB RAM and 128 GB of internal storage that can be expanded further with a micro SD card.
The Mi 10i 5G has a 6.67-inch Full HD+ LCD display that can get up to 450 nits bright and is compliant with HDR10. This too has a 120 Hz refresh rate for a flicker-free experience in compatible apps. The screen is protected by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 5. A 4820 mAh battery keeps it running for close to a day and a half of moderate use, and the company bundles a 33 W fast charger that claims to take it from 0 to 100 percent in under an hour. The smartphone runs Android 10 with MIUI 12. An Android 11 update has started rolling out for this phone.
Mi 10i 5G price in India: Rs 21,999 for 6 GB RAM/ 128 GB storage; Rs 23,999 for 8 GB RAM/ 128 GB storage
Samsung Galaxy A52
The new Samsung Galaxy A52 flaunts some flagship features. For starters, it is IP67 rated dust and water resistant, something extremely rare in this segment. It has a 6.5-inch Super AMOLED display with a 90 Hz refresh rate and Corning Gorilla Glass 5 protection. The camera department here is quite versatile with a 64 MP primary camera with optical image stabilisation; another rare feature in this budget. Giving it company are a 12 MP ultrawide shooter, a 5 MP macro camera and a 5 MP depth sensor to capture some quality photos in various modes. A capable 32 MP selfie camera is embedded in a tiny punch hole at the top of the screen.
The processing power is modest here, with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 720G chip powering this device. You get either 6 GB or 8 GB of RAM, along with 128 GB of internal (expandable) storage. The Samsung Galaxy A52 runs Android 11 with One UI 3.1. A 4,500 mAh battery can keep the phone powered beyond a day of moderate use. The bundled charger promises to recharge 50 percent of the battery in half an hour. Considering all its features, the A52 is a pretty good option in this budget, and more so for brand-conscious buyers.
Samsung Galaxy A52 price in India: Rs 23,499 for 6 GB RAM/ 128 GB storage; Rs 24,999 for 8 GB RAM/ 128 GB storage
Realme X3 SuperZoom
The Realme X3 SuperZoom (Review) is almost a year old, but still packs a punch at its current discounted price, and boasts of features missing in more expensive phones. This feature-packed phone offers 5X optical zoom, courtesy of its 8MP periscope telephoto camera with OIS. The rest of the camera department on this phone includes a 64 MP primary camera, an 8MP ultrawide shooter and a 2 MP macro camera. You get two cameras at the front (32 MP + 8 MP) to take care of portrait selfies and video calls; something that will please the selfie crowd. The phone runs Android 10 with Realme UI on top; an Android 11 update has started rolling out.
The design is similar to the first OnePlus Nord in many ways, but the textured glass back adds a lot more style. There is ample processing power here with Qualcomm’s previous generation flagship Snapdragon 855+ chip powering this phone. You get the 8 GB RAM and 256 GB internal storage variant under 25K. The Realme X3 SuperZoom has a 6.6-inch Full HD+ screen with a 120 Hz refresh rate. The LCD screen is protected against scratches by a layer of Corning Gorilla Glass 5. A 4,200 mAh battery powers the phone for over a day of standard use, and the bundled 30 W fast charger juices it up in just about an hour.
Pro tip: If you are willing to trade the telephoto camera and half the internal storage for a more recent Mediatek Dimensity 1200 processor, an AMOLED screen with 120 Hz refresh rate and 5G compliance, the Realme X7 Max 5G (Review) is currently selling under 25K. It is a great option at that price.
Realme X3 SuperZoom price in India: Rs 23,999 for 8 GB RAM/ 256 GB storage
Realme X7 Max 5G price in India: Rs 24,999 for 8 GB RAM/ 128 GB storage
Vivo V20 (2021 edition)
The Vivo V20 (2021 edition) is powered by Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 730 SoC, which is pretty decent for this segment. You get 8 GB RAM and 128 GB internal storage that can be expanded further to 1 TB with a micro SD card. This Vivo phone runs Android 11 out of the box with their FunTouch 11 UI on top. Among other things, we picked this phone mainly for its style quotient. If you like slim phones, you are bound to be impressed by the V20. It is less than 7.5 mm thin; a refreshing change from the bloating phones we have been seeing over the past year or two.
Despite the slimness, it has a respectable 4,000 mAh battery that lasts for over a day of moderate use, and supports 33 W fast charging. The phone comes with a 6.44-inch Full HD+ AMOLED display and a glass back. The camera department at the back is helmed by a 64 MP primary camera doing most of the heavy lifting, supported by an 8 MP ultrawide snapper and a 2 MP depth sensor. Selfie enthusiasts are in for a treat courtesy of a 44 MP front camera with autofocus that can also record 4K videos.

Google decides to go for its own silicon
Google has launched a new flagship Pixel smartphone powered by its first mobile chip, which will place Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the hands of people.
Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro are expected to be released later this year, along with the superfast 5G wireless capability and the debutant Google’s Tensor chip — crafted along the lines of processors it has made for data centres to enable computers to think more like humans.
“It’s basically a mobile system on a chip that's designed around artificial intelligence,” Google Devices' Senior Vice-President Rick Osterloh said while speaking at the company’s headquarters in Silicon Valley. “We’re really excited about it. We’re setting the stage to really grow the business," he added. Google’s Pixel Line has cornered a small share in the global smartphone market that has been ruled predominantly by players, such as Samsung and Apple along with Chinese manufacturers.
Pixel phones have been perceived as a way for Google to exhibit the capabilities of its free Android mobile operating system, setting a bar for its rival smartphone makers. “We’ve always thought about our hardware products in the context of driving computing forward,” observed Google’s Chief Executive Sundar Pichai. “Our custom Google Tensor chip, which has been four years in the making and builds off of two decades of Google’s computing experience, does exactly that.”
The smarter chip was also put to work to improve photo and video capabilities as a nod to hot trends in sharing images and short-form snippets online, a has demonstration showed. What’s more interesting is the arrival of Tensor, a new custom SoC (System on a Chip) that will make debut on the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro. It’s a crucial step for the company, as it plans to differentiate itself in the jam-packed smartphone field that Google has admittedly struggled with in the past.
Of late, there have been rumours that Google has been working on its own silicon for future hardware products. The new chipset, previously code-named "Whitechapel" and now called Tensor SoC, comes from Tensor Processing Units (TPU), the AI chip that powers its data centres. Google Tensor SoC is the key to unlocking AI and machine learning, which Google has focused on intensively for several generations of Pixel smartphones, which in other words are AI and Machine Language. Google claims that ML unravels a special experience for pixel smartphone users.
As you can imagine, the details are so far sketchy. Tensor also claims that Google Camera works seamlessly with computer photos that are used for photos and videos, and the new security kernel and Titan M2. In fact, Pixel 6 has the most layers of hardware, which is true with regard to providing security to any phone. This means that Google will move completely away from Qualcomm chips in these high-end systems and will follow Apple's path of developing custom silicon very soon.
Couple this with the aggressive MediaTek's Android smartphones priced in the range of Rs 25,000-35,000. The three most popular phones, the OnePlus Nord 2, Poco F3 GT and Realme X7 Max 5G, all run on the MediaTek Dimensity 1200 chip or a small variant of the Nord 2 in particular - a flagship-style smartphone experience. This makes it comparable to Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8 series chips, which power much more expensive flagship phones. There are still Qualcomm 7 series chips. Qualcomm 7 series chips were far behind in terms of performance and longevity, powering mobile phones at around Rs 30,000.
What is Tensor SoC?
The name Tensor pays a clear tribute to Google's TensorFlow ML, which has supported several of its projects. It comes as no surprise that the company sees AI/ML as critical to the chip's space in the upcoming phones. The Pixel team has long pushed software-based solutions, such as computational photography, as a differentiator. With the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro, Google wants to control the vital technologies in a phone: silicon, hardware, software, cameras and battery. A smartphone's processor, or brain, is critical to the phone's performance and battery life.
Google’s move to Tensor comes as the world faces a global chip scarcity that has hampered the manufacture of products from automobiles to computers. Google decided to build its chips after what the market had to offer didn't meet its needs.
The Tensor SoC launch in no way indicates that Google is done with Qualcomm. Google has not yet indicated whether it will use the custom processor on the Snapdragon chip in the mid-range pixel smartphones in the future. It is also unclear how powerful the new Tensor SoC is compared to Apple’s A-series chips. Qualcomm says the two will continue to work together on products based on the Snapdragon platform.
The big statement from Google wasn’t an approval that the Pixel 6 and Pixel 6 Pro phones would be available later this year. If you take a closer look, you will notice some significant changes. Some of which are Google no longer plans to buy processors from Qualcomm, the world’s largest smartphone chip-maker, and as a replacement, it implements its silicon called Google Tensor.
In short, the two leading tech brands, Apple and Google, are at different ends of the smartphone market share, but they will soon no longer rely on Qualcomm for smartphone processors. However, the company insists on staying close to Google and the Snapdragon chip as it sees it as necessary. Perhaps, the search engine giant was not prepared for the August 11 big Samsung event, or maybe it’s just hoping to keep people interested in the months leading up to a big fall announcement.
