Not to get overly sentimental but rap beef is honestly such a creative form of expression. Like we’re going to hold off on kicking the shit out of each other and calling up shooters to make clever rhymes about each other and get the common man saying words like ‘double entendre.’

Here’s a couple of suggestions of other diss tracks to listen to if you’ve found you’ve liked bitchy poetry:

Ether - Nas (2001) - diss track vs Jay Z & widely considered to be one of the best diss tracks ever released. It’s a response to Jay Z’s diss ‘Takeover’ which at the time of its release left people thinking Nas’ career was over and then Nas uno reversed that shit with Ether and it’s still considered to be a miracle that Jay Z managed to maintain his fame.

Hit ‘em up - 2Pac (1996) -diss track vs Biggie & Bad Boy records. Part of the East Coast / West Coast beef. 2Pac was shot 5 times and survived and Biggie released a song called ‘Who Shot Ya.’ Hit em up is Pac’s response and it’s iconic. Plus the tune is groovy as shit.

Real Muthaphuckkin’ G’s - Eazy E (1993) - Dr Dre left his group NWA over a dispute about contracts/pay. He later released a song called ‘Fuck with Dre Day’ where he had a go at Eazy E (the lead rapper of NWA). Eazy released this in response and it’s another groovy, west coast banger.

Story of Adidon- Pusha T (2018) - Pusha T walked so Kendrick Lamar could run. Need I say more.

No Vaseline - Ice Cube (1991) - vs remaining members of NWA. Cube was the first to leave NWA over contracts/pay disputes. The remaining members released an album, with subtle disses against him. Ice Cube, as Ice Cube does, got pissed.

Life’s on the Line - 50 Cent (2003) - adding this because 50 Cent hates as easily as he breathes and it’s something to marvel at. His beef with Ja Rule started in ‘99 when Ja Rule was robbed by 50’s people and then one thing lead to another and 50 was stabbed and then he was shot 9 times. ‘Time is the best medicine-‘ no. no it’s not. If anything 50 gets angrier through the years. 19 years later 50 bought 200 tickets to Ja Rule’s concert so the front rows were completely empty.

REGULATORS: THE 25 DOPEST G-FUNK SONGS

West Coast Hip-Hop was already becoming a force. 

In the late 1980s, artists like Ice-T, Too $hort, King Tee and N.W.A. were putting California on the Hip-Hop map and by the dawn of the 1990s, New York City's grip on the rap industry was no longer a given. Producers like Above The Law's Cold 187Um (aka Big Hutch), DJ Quik and most famously, Dr. Dre, began melding their love of the bass-heavy grooves of Parliament/Funkadelic and other bands like Zapp and the Ohio Players, into Hip-Hop beats. The sound that emerged came to be known as G-Funk, and after 1992, it took over the West Coast.

And, in turn, the West Coast would take over Hip-Hop, commercially. After Dr. Dre took G-funk to the mainstream with the success of his solo debut The Chronic, the sound was virtually everywhere. With the Super Bowl Halftime Show putting everyone in a West Coast spirit, we decided to rank the 25 Dopest G-Funk songs.

"YOUR LOVE IS A 1.8.7." - THE WHITEHEAD BROS [BONUS SONG]

G-Funk was so big in 1993/1994, that it started to influence R&B. One of the most obvious examples was this single from The Whitehead Bros. With its squealing synths and references to murder and automatic weapons, it's a gangstafied love song.

A weed theme song for stoners circa 1993, this banger from the "Poetic Justice" soundtrack gave an indication of where Warren G was going to go production-wise. It also memorably provided an intro snippet on Snoop's "Doggy Style" a few months later.

Cube's first album was Bomb Squad bombast and his second outing was looser, but still hard. After enjoying mainstream success with singles like "It Was A Good Day" and "Check Yo' Self," Cube dropped his most obviously G-Funk-leaning single in this West Coast classic.

Dre's love of P-Funk was never more evident than on this Sunday driving anthem. The flip of "Mothership Connection (Star Child)" is perfect and it gave "The Chronic" another hit single.

"THIS D.J."

Sure, the Nate Dogg-assisted "Regulate" is way more famous. But this follow-up single best sums up the sunny vibe of Warren G's particular brand of G-Funk. He kept it street, but also gave a more laid-back alternative to what was coming out of Death Row at the time. And this is a great summer song.

"CALIFORNIA LOVE" [REMIX] - 2PAC W/DR. DRE FEAT. ROGER TROUTMAN

The original may be more famous, but it's the remix that's pure G-Funk. From that wobbly bassline to those squealy synths and the presence of an electro-funk legend in Roger Troutman himself.

It's so P-Funk-like, it's like you can hear George Clinton sitting in the room. Nobody would ever have trouble remembering his name again. Shoutout to "Atomic Dog."

Big Hutch (Cold 187Um) is one of the most underrated producers of all time. It's so funky and Pac and Money B bring some of that freewheeling D.U. energy to the proceedings.

Daz's spin on G-Funk is so distinct. He goes deep into those bass grooves and this is one of his rubbery best. From the classic "Above The Rim" soundtrack, it helped announce that Tha Dogg Pound was up next.

From that opening thump; you can feel Parliament's influence. This hit from "The Chronic" was the culmination of his sound up that point--and yes, a scorching diss of Dre's former bandmate Eazy-E (and Luke and Tim Dog).

Anthony Johnson (February 1, 1966 – September 6, 2021) sometimes credited as A. J. Johnson, was an actor and comedian. He was known for his role as “Ezal” on Friday.

Born in Compton, his father Eddie Smith was a stuntman and a co-founder of the Black Stuntmen’s Association. He credited his father for helping him enter the film industry, by getting him to work in film productions. He had accredited the comedian Robin Harris for helping him earlier on in his career as a stand-up comedian and giving him another chance even when he was jeered for his bad performance.

He began acting in his early twenties. In 1990, he landed a starring role as E.Z.E. in House Party, after which he started doing stand-up in bars in Los Angeles. He appeared in Lethal Weapon 3 as a drug dealer and in Menace II Society. His biggest role was in the 1995 comedy Friday, as Ezal, a crackhead and thief. He appeared in Panther, The Players Club, B*A*P*S, I Got the Hook-Up, Def Jam’s How to Be a Player and Repos, and in rap videos: in Dr. Dre’s “Dre Day” (1992), he played Sleazy-E, a parody of Eazy-E, and he appeared again as Sleazy-E in the video for Eazy-E’s “Real Muthaphuckkin G’s” (1993), this time being assaulted.
