HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO PETER NOONE, the great singer/actor/musician and front man for the uber-successful British Invasion pop band, Herman’s Hermits. Their run included 3 feature films, countless TV appearances, tours with The Beatles and The Who, and 60 million records sold, with songs written by Sam Cooke, Ray Davies, Goffin-King, and Graham Gouldman. Originally from Manchester, Peter was 12 years old when he entered showbiz. Davy Jones (also from Manchester) told me that when Peter was a “teen idol” on magazines he still had to take the trash out as he was still living at home with his folks. Beyond the 60s, Peter kept on making records, intersecting with Bruce Johnston (Beach Boys), Tom Petty, Phil Seymour, and David Bowie—who produced and played on Peter’s cover of “Oh You Pretty Things.” I also recommend The Tremblers, Peter’s New Wave rock band from 1979. Meanwhile, Peter is still on the trail with the current Hermits line-up, crooning “Mrs. Brown,” “There’s a Kind of Hush” and his other hits. I crossed paths with Peter on the road many times, and I admire the way he avails himself to his fans. Meanwhile, here’s “Today’s the Day,” a Peter Noone/DavyJones collaboration from 1998. HB PN and thank you for the years of musical joy you’ve given to us.

Week ending: 27th October
Some tracks just feel like a bit of a watershed, and I suspect that our first tune will be one of them. And I also suspect that our other two tracks will also bring some good energy to the table this week. So, without further ado...
Rock Around the Clock - Bill Haley and His Comets (peaked at Number 1)
I mean, it's iconic, right? From the gunshot double drum hits at the start, to the way it just launches straight in with a One, two, three o'clock, four o'clock rock, to the choppy guitar, and the way that double bass and sax kicks in on the chorus. Rocking, rowdy fun.
I always enjoyed this song, but doing this project this way, it's even more obvious just how much a shake-up this kind of sound was. It's not that this is the first example we've had, but it's the most straight-forwardly hard-rocking song we've had, all chaotic, repetitive, bashy energy.
I also like that it's a song about going dancing - and not the soft, gently "I love dancing with my lady" type song that we've seen before! No, this is about having a wild, all-night, dancing-with-complete-strangers dance party. It's a picture of a sort of teenage exuberance that probably existed before 1955, but that we'd certainly never seen in the charts. Has there been any other artist yet who could get away with lyrics like If the band slows down, we're gonna yell for more?
It's actually a really simple song, too, both structurally and lyrically. We've got six verses, each ending in exactly the same refrain, most of which is just Bill counting, and the lyrics' entire point is "let's keep dancing". There's not even really a romantic element, just dancing, and there's a simplicity to that that's almost as provocative as the raucous energy, as the teens reject the complicated, lushly-orchestrated songs of their parents.
I'd also be remiss if I didn't mention how much fun all the little solo breaks and instrumental touches are here, from the jittery guitar solo in the middle, to the punchy little sax blasts later on, to the endearingly cheesy guitar and drum roll ending. You get the feeling that everyone involved is having a lot of fun, and that fun's pretty infectious. No wonder this got to Number 1.
Hey There - Johnnie Ray (5)
Another promising contender, actually. I liked this song a lot in last week's entry, and I feel like it would be well-suited to Johnnie's emotional style. I'm also interested to hear the original male version, after Rosemary Clooney's gender-flipped one. Will it land differently, with a man singing?
No, it turns out. The most striking change is that Johnnie is now giving out advice "like a brother", not "like a mother", which I hadn't even thought about, but yeah, that needs to change. Otherwise, it turns out the change of pronouns doesn't actually change the vibe too much. We've still got Johnnie, hopelessly gone on a lady who doesn't like him back, advising himself to give her up, but knowing that he's too far gone to take his own advice.
There are some nice touches that Rosemary's version didn't have. The chorus at the start, for example, gives the whole thing a slightly jazzy barbershop feel that I do appreciate, especially when the tinkly piano-like sound from Mr. Sandman appears on the top.
Unfortunately, the rhythms and instrumentation have changed too, and I don't think for the better - Rosemary's version felt different, more swung, and with more breathing space between the lines she was singing. Somehow, Johnnie's version feels stuffier, or maybe just fussier, compared to Rosemary's version's relative simplicity. Her version sounded intimate, lonely, delicate even. This doesn't quite, despite Johnnie giving it his best go.
Or maybe I'm just annoyed that this isn't actually rock and roll. I know Johnnie has it in him, but this ain't quite it.
Hernando's Hideaway - The Johnston Brothers (1)
Another song that got to Number 1, and apparently also a song from The Pyjama Game, which I didn't know, despite kind of knowing the song (or at least being able to hum the first line).
It does kind of make sense that this is from a musical, though - I think even not knowing that, I'd have assumed it was from a film, or something, because it's not really the sort of song you'd just write otherwise. I mean, it's not about love, or heartbreak, or dancing, or God, or babies, or any of the things that 1950s people seem to like writing songs about. Instead, it's a song that sets a very specific scene, and that's basically it. It's a song about a club, and that's kind of its whole point.
This scene-setting is done deftly, but not particularly subtly. Even before we hit the lyrics, we've got castanets going furiously, setting us up for a tango tune when the Johnston Brothers finally come in. Add in some tango strings and yet more castanets going ham between the verses, just for added drama, then throw in some ole lines, and you've got something that couldn't be more Spanish if it tried.
Somehow, despite all this cheese, it does also somehow manage to be a little bit sexy. I mean, a tango is fundamentally a pretty sexy dance, fitting with description of the titular club as a a dark secluded place / A place where no one knows your face, perfect for A glass of wine, a fast embrace. Clearly, the club's secrecy allows for a certain degree of amorous anonymity - how scandalous!
In this context, I also like the description of how you get into Hernando's Hideaway, complete with sound effects, as the narrator tells the listener Just knock three times and whisper low / That you and I were sent by Joe. It's like something from a film, so melodramatic.
Yeah, that was a good set of songs. I went into this entry feeling pretty good, and I wasn't wrong. The energy this week was impeccable, and though all three songs were very different to each other, each one had its own distinctive charm and fun. I think that's something that some of the soupier ballads are maybe missing - that sense of fun, or of not taking yourself too seriously. That, and guitar solos!
Favourite song of the bunch: Rock Around the Clock

Finished Ikenfell last night. So much fun! Beat it blind but I missed a few things so I looked those up and beat it again from the last save point. Stellar game and one of the few %100 items in my Steam library.
I'd been in love with the /idea/ of the game since I first saw it since I'm a HUGE Super Mario RPG fan and I must say it's absolutely worth playing. Go buy it. Here's a few notes:
Snappy satisfying and beautifully paced battles that reward you for going the extra mile but never force you either.
Exploration that delivers satisfaction without falling victim to scope creep.
Wonderful story chock full of subversion of expectations without sacrificing the strength of the payoffs.
Lovable and complex characters who never come across as anything less than genuine.
Stellar, and I mean TOP tier, music that blends modern vibes with retro aesthetics.
Can't wait to do a more robust review because I have a lot to say about this title.

Accident Man (2018): An Explosive Display of Stunts and Farts
One should hope they never find themselves at the business end of an assassin. Especially not any of the assassins from Accident Man (2018) seeing as how they all possess unique and brutal ways of killing people. There’s Jane the Ripper (Amy Johnston), who rips through people with her katana, Carnage Cliff (Ross O’Hennessy), who cleaves carnage with his mighty axe, and our hero, Mike (Scott…

Green Ray - Green Flame and Archangel Raphael
Talon Abraxas
The green Ray of light represents concretization, crystallization of substance, knowledge and science. The green Flame is the Flame of balance and Truth. It leads to analysis and development of ideas, especially Divine ideas and impulses that have been conceived in the First Ray of the Blue Flame. Those ideas ultimately and inevitably produce wisdom and light. The fifth Ray of light brings the energy of exploration which might eventually produce separation and crystallization. The discernment and thoroughness with which the green Ray operates produce in the mind of man an act of final understanding and revelation of the Truth. This is the Ray of concentration, as a manifestation of the undisturbed sustained attention, which is attained by consecration. In the green Flame we recognize the seat of the physical healing and perfection.
The Green Flame Invocation is performed on Thursday when the fifth green Ray especially strongly manifests its energies.
Archangel Raphael is an Angel of healing and consecration. A physician, minister, student and every devotee, who out of his/her free will consecrates his/her strength to serve life, stand under the special blessing and protection. Archangel Raphael forms the heart of every single individual who is supposed to take a new incarnation. Marry, the Mother of God, a being full of mercy, grace, compassion and motherly love is the Divine complement of Archangel Raphael. Mother Marry is the Hierarch of the "Temple of Resurrection", together with Jesus. The Temple is filled with the Green Flame of healing. It combines many different healing places that possess healing streams of energy, like for instance, Lourdes, the water of Saint Petka, and many others. Those are the places where a constant prayer ascends to heaven, towards God.
Archangel Raphael represents the power of sight and vision - vision of the Truth. He can help you develop your third eye - the inner vision, or Divine vision - and the resort to the power of creation by visualization. Archangel Raphael can improve your concentration and extrasensory perception. Archangel Raphael is a guardian of the blind; He brings healing in every respect, supports the healers, helps the physician and all spiritual therapists. Archangel Raphael supports all people on their Divine path.
Archangel Raphael will bring you healing, health and wealth, if you just ask Him for help. He will help you develop intuition and improve your vision, he will bestow upon you the Divine energy of self-healing. Surround yourself with the green light of the fifth Ray and pray for whatever is necessary. You know that honest and pure prayer will always be heard and fulfilled. You can rely on Archangel Raphael while traveling, as He is the guardian of those on the road.
Archangel Raphael will teach you to consecrate yourself every day when your eyes look at something which is less than perfect. In that case you can utter the following prayer: "Beloved Father, forgive me for disrespecting Your law of love. Beloved Archangel Raphael, once again consecrate my eyes, so that I can see only perfection! "
When you hear something negative, when your hands are impatient in some move, when you demonstrate indignation, when your tongue and lips utter only one wrong word, then, say to yourself: "Beloved Father, forgive me for the misuse of Your energy." You should repeat this sentence often, until you have understood and corrected everything.
Your individual life stream is found in grave danger only if you do not rise up again, clean up the dust from your knees, and make another step once again. Archangel Raphael will alway enlighten your four lower bodies once again, whenever you need this and whenever you ask Him to. Do not hesitate, ask Him again and again. Ask Archangel Raphael to become aware of nothing less than the perfection, so that you can see perfection, hear perfection, and speak perfection, for now, and for always.
The representatives from the world of crystals for the Green Ray (Green Golden Flame) are blue sapphire, indigolite, sugilite and sodalite. These crystals are connected to the sixth chakra - the ajna chakra.
