There was a brief flash of playful offence that darted across Regina’s expression when her wife told her that the tree made everything look beautiful. Perhaps Raveena would have even seen the expression, seen how the emotion twisted her lips and sparkled across her eyes for the briefest of moments, if the older woman didn’t currently have her face hidden against the warm spot behind the other woman’s ear.
❝Is that your way of telling me that you were mistaken about my beauty? That I was only beautiful because I was under that tree?❞ A playful huff escaped Regina’s lips as she tightened her arms around her wife, holding her impossibly closer as though it would prevent them from being separated for another hundred years. What? Could she be blamed for being clingy? For wanting to be by Raveena’s side? For craving the physical contact that had eluded her for too long? Especially after… earlier… She was surprised that the younger woman was letting her anywhere near in the first place. Regina would only need to turn her head and she could rip out the other woman’s throat out quicker than Raveena could blink. ❝If so… I do believe that you got the poor end of the bargain, agreeing to marry me before even laying eyes on me away from that magical tree.❞ A small chuckle vibrated in her throat and she shifted slightly when Raveena burped the small babe in order to give her more room.
When she had first laid her eyes on Raveena, when she had seen her through the flower fall of purple, she had been enthralled. Her heart had suddenly pounded and her breath caught in her throat when her eyes met now familiar brown ones. She had stared for a good few second, the connection between them brimming, almost vibrating as her soul called out to the other girl’s. And then, in a rush of panic, she had looked away and escaped from the scene in a flurry of skirts, not risking to return again.
Her fear had been founded by something else. Only a few months previously, she had befriended a young human boy who had been in the forest picking fruits for his horses. They had become fast friends and Regina often snuck out over the period of several months to meet with him and play in the woods. He showed her how to ride horses, she taught him the art of picking flowers for ladies, and they exchanged whispered confessions with giggles and blushes. He had told her of his love for a blonde blacksmith’s girl and she had encouraged him to pursue his love and ask her to be his wife… and he had. He and Regina had been best friends. But mother had found out one day and, with a wrath Regina had never seen before -one that shook her even to this day - Cora tore out the boy’s throat right in front of Regina’s eyes and proceeded to give her a lecture on how humans were weak and how Regina shouldn’t allow herself so close to another. Frightened by the display of controlling power, and from the hatred that had vibrated from her mother in that moment, she had hidden herself away in her parent’s grand mansion in fear of causing the same bloodshed to anybody else she crossed paths with.
Mistakenly, Regina had feared the same fate for the beauty she had met, and so kept her distance in hopes that mother wouldn’t find out and punish the girl too for gaining the vampire’s interest. In this case, it was much worse, as Daniel the horse boy had been her best friend, but this girl was… otherworldly, enchanting, and Regina’s heart had been taken at just that glance. The risks were so much higher and yet… she hadn’t been able to stop herself from scurrying to the village one day, hiding behind a cart of hay and watching as the young girl plucked flowers in a basket, her heart swelling with a want she couldn’t explain as she crouched there and watched with a desire she didn’t know how to handle. It was only later in life, when she was married to Raveena and away from her controlling mother, that she realised that Cora’s gripe must have been against humans rather than Regina having emotional entanglements (at least, that’s what she hoped; why else would Mother have agreed to the union?). And it was a good job that she no longer spoke to Cora once she moved away to start her happy family… because if that was the case, then Henry would never have been safe from her.
With a small smile, she swept the baby up into her arms and cradled it close to her chest, affection overflowing in her chest as she looked down at the human child. Mother thought that humans were in superior, that vampires should rule all and humans be nothing more than slaves, than pets… But Regina had never been like that. She took after her father, and her marriage to Raveena had saved her before her mother could taint her with her dark hold.
She knew that her wife’s magic had cleaned the babe up, but she also felt as though the little soul could do with a dip in some warm water to soothe its skin and warm it up. ❝Lead the way.❞Even as she spoke to her wife her gaze did not move from the tiny babe who gurgled in happiness and shut its eyes to sleep. The baby was safe now… and nothing would ever hurt it again.

WIFE:
She touched her fingers to her wife’s cheek briefly, the gesture tender and loving despite the pain that seemed to radiate from her lower abdomen. God she hated this spell, and if it weren’t for the son she loved with her whole being, then she would have left the babe to die as they travelled seeking aid in the form of wet nurse or health practitioner. She knew it wouldn’t live with the hours it had already spent alone… perhaps her love for Henry was the only thing keeping her humanity alive.
❛ Oh? Am I the venefica now? ❜ She asked, a chuckle caught on the tail end of her sentence, the baby complaining as it ate. ❛ That tree makes everything beautiful… its why I kept returning every day looking for you. My parents thought I was mad ❜ She remembered how their house had been filled with purple flowers, the colour everywhere after she had returned day after day with a basket full of them. They had laughed at her rose cheeks when she told them of the enchantress that walked through the falling flowers, her heart taken and soul claimed. Little did she know that her parents had taken her seriously, searching the village for the girl and her family; once they did, a marriage had been arranged, although Raveena didn’t know the details on how her parents managed the feat, she was grateful nonetheless when they broke the news to her.
A hiccup pulled her attention down to the child who pushed her chest away, its eyes instead focused on her necklace it grabbed at before the blinking of owlish eyes became slower as she watched. As much as the feat was fascinating, Raveena still pulled the babe up to her shoulder and rubbed it’s back, knowing full well that with the time it had gone without milk, it would have taken in air that would cause a stomach ache — something she wouldn’t like to experience again.
Pushing up from her perch on the rock, Raveena bounced the child until it burped, a trail of spit on her shoulder that she wiped away the only evidence. ❛ We should leave now. Here take the child, I’ll find our direction ❜ Handing over the baby to Regina, Raveena adjusted her dress so she was once again covered and pulled her cape around her shoulders to try and hide the wet spot on her chest that had formed… another side effect of pregnancy she hated.
