[SPOILER ALERT 🚨] Long Jegulus Rant
I will say the one thing I love about anti-hero by rweoutofthewoods is the characterization of James. It’s similar to the James in Pathological People Pleaser in the sense that James is not perfect, but it specifically calls that headcanon out & challenges it.
They both give you this ideal James, but then blow it to pieces by showing you just how unstable & imperfect he is. Simply because it’s unfair how he as a character has to hold it together while everyone is falling apart. It’s painful to read because I’m so used to volatile emotions but never from James. Especially directed towards Regulus.
Reading the things he says to Regulus makes my brain default to “James would never…”, but in reality we all say nasty things sometimes & he’s no exception. I feel like reading this fic impacts me on a deeper level as well since I internalize a lot of the same ideas/feelings about myself that Regulus does about himself.
I struggle to be honest about how hurt I feel, & I’d rather brush it off even though it rots me away. While at the same time people hurting me makes me want to hurt them back, but more (it’s a fatal flaw of mine & volatile).
Regulus as a character strikes me deeply because I understand him a bit too well, so when James is cruel (while I can understand it) it hurts me the way it hurts Regulus. That’s why the headcanon of James being perfect is far too one dimensional & inaccurate as much as I love me that grumpy/sunshine trope, getting a deeper James is always appreciated.
But also I need them to love each other again…I’m suffering…please Jegulus…my loves…we can do better than this 🥹…

Saw some really bad anti-Cordelia/anti-Cangel opinions but I’m being so brave about it. In all seriousness though, what do you say to people who think Season 3 regresses on cordelia’s development for the sake of the romance plot? I think it’s an unbelievably wrong take that clearly has no appreciation for her character whatsoever but I’d like to hear your takes.
So, I do think we lose some of Cordy’s POV in the second half of S3 once she becomes a ‘romance interest’ but I don’t see this as a flaw on Cangel’s part. Moreover, I see it as a flaw of the show itself AKA having too many male writers in the writers room.
However, I don’t think her character is regressed at all. S3 has some of the most amazing growth for her character in the show. "So - demonize me already” is one of the best Cordelia moments across both series.
I'm going to quote Nika_83 here because she said it better than I could:
"I say they also don't know the meaning of the word regression. Which is to go backwards. At no point in season 3 does cordy slide back in to season 1 btvs behavior. So that's pattently wrong. Rather she is way more selfless and giving. This all makes sense given what she has seen and experienced. She literally feels the pain of the visions. She wants to help those people. And selfishly she wants to be important to angel and the cause. And she still maintains that "materialism' she always had with loving nice things, being bought out by clothes, loving being pylea princess, etc. Which is a part of her as a character and can be a flaw but that doesn't override her need to save others, or herself."
I don’t know the posts your referring to specifically but common arguments I see for S3 are:
She’s become a Mary-Sue/Saint Cordy.
Angel on Top has a good response to that: “She's in this relationship with Groo that we already discussed as being, like, flawed in various ways and has a certain amount of denial baked into it. Like that is imperfect. And she also tries to read what is going on with Gunn and is completely wrong as well. Like, she’s also, like, there’s human error happening still with her. Like I don’t think she is—god forbid I use the Mary Sue word–she’s like not doing that kind of stuff. I do think Cordelia would be inherently less interesting if she was suddenly perfect and never did anything wrong ever in her life. But, you know, she’s still Cordelia. She’s still, like, making some mistakes and being a little too abrasive every once in a while. Like, I don’t subscribe to that.”

I think saying ‘oh, all she cares about is Angel’ is oversimplifying it greatly and missing the point. Yes, she cares about Angel and always has (see 1x22 when she buys him art supplies to make him feel better and “Well, he's gonna have to start wanting things from life, whether he wants to or not!”). This is nothing new. I think in the overall context of what’s going on in S3 at that time, it makes sense. I think she is prioritizing Angel and focusing on Angel’s grief over losing Connor to protect herself from her own grief. If she keeps busy taking care of Angel, she won’t have to feel the pain/loss herself. Also we know Cordy is guilty of downplaying her own pain to her own detriment (her hiding that the visions were literally killing her!) so sadly this is in character for her.

I also wanna hop in here and say that I completely agree with everything that has been said and I also wanna add that even if you completely strip away the romantic subtext of s3, Cordelia would be the same person that she was in that season because two things are very true. One, that her life would still be very much intertwined with Angel's because that's the nature of him being the protagonist--similar to how Cordy's life was very much intertwined with Buffy's on BTVS--and two, her growth over the last seasons (and arguably since BTVS) would still lead her to the place that she wound up. She didn't grow to the kind hearted, loving person who cares more about the mission than money that we see in s3 because of Angel or for Angel. She grew because she was presented time and time again with a worldview and a mission that was bigger and more important than herself and it shaped her and facilitated her growth into the person she became.
I also gotta point out that the argument in itself feels kind of sexist as if a woman can’t have positive growth unless it’s attributed to shipping her with a man. Not to mention that the "Saint Cordy" moniker also feels sexist because it both diminishes her growth and patronizes her. Essentially it paints her as this super perfect saint of a person instead of talking about how much she's grown or the sacrifices that she's had to make in order to get where she is in canon or even talking about the mistakes she does make/flaws she does have in the back half of s3. Not to mention it also is used to not talk about the real issues of the back part of s3 and how that twisted into the narrative of s4 (which is a very sexist narrative with many flaws). It's just is like "oh she's saint cordelia now" and doesn't leave much, if any, room for deeper discussions. Not to mention it also paints this narrative of "a woman has to be suffering constantly or tormented in order to be viewed as a flawed, complex person" which is both gross and incorrect.
Again, super agree with everything that has been said and this was a very good question, thank you for the ask!

I appreciate you also coming in with good faith and assuming the same of me. I will respond in kind.
1. I agree that, at this moment in time, genocide is unlikely to occur in most countries within, say, the next ten years. But the horror of Jewish genocides historically is that it can, does, and has happened everywhere. With the exception of America, perhaps (due more to its age as a nation rather than its character). At the end of WWI, I sincerely doubt many people would have predicted Germany to begin the next anti-Jewish genocide, let alone one on such a scale. I understand that this is an issue on which we might disagree. But I firmly believe every Jewish person on earth has a right to fear for their safety in their communities at this time. Not that they MUST feel terror. But that they all have a RIGHT to feel terror. Not because genocide everywhere is inevitable within the next election cycle, but because the mass abandonment they are seeing in public and private social spheres and the rising acceptability of antisemitic rhetoric and violence is cause for alarm. And this distancing of Jews from membership in wider public spaces and exclusion in private groups is only going to make dehumanization easier, regardless of where it occurs. And even if it does not end up rising to the level of genocide, there are still plenty of horrific rungs on the ladder of antisemitic hatred and violence to climb on the way to that place—economic suppression, removal of legal protections, ghettoization, harassment in public spaces, pogroms, gun violence, and hate crimes just to name a few. Jews being scared is an important problem, regardless of whether or not it rises to the level of genocide. And each act of social, legal, or economic exclusion makes genocide more likely whenever it occurs.
2. I agree that ongoing genocide in general and Palestinian needs specifically are time sensitive. I do not agree that, again—only currently, western protests are in any way helpful to anyone in Palestine, Israel, or anywhere. I honestly don’t think all protests need to stop or, if they did stop, for that stoppage to necessarily last longer than a week. Rushing in with their metaphorical guns half cocked is setting back progress for organization like Standing Together and Women Wage Peace and other organizations led by those affected more directly by the ongoing conflict. I don’t have the numbers on me at this exact moment, but I believe Israelis have been protesting their own government and its policies toward Palestine and Netanyahu for (again, my number may be a little off here) 37 weeks prior to 10/7. The rush to protest is based on a very legitimate urge to help in a time sensitive matter. But that urge is useless if it doesn’t actually accomplish anything but raising awareness. Raising awareness is good! Great even! But if that awareness comes with mixed messages about harming Jews or Israelis or supporting the terrorist organization that causes immense damage to both Palestinians and Jews worldwide or sends a widespread message that voting for Trump (or allowing, through inaction, a second Trump presidency) is preferable to an imperfect response from Biden on this matter—then those protests are actively harmful.
I think looking to Black Lives Matter is actually a tremendously important and worthwhile example of how to handle time sensitive conflicts.
BLM did (and does!) a heck of a lot more than scream “Black Lives Matter!” And hope that everyone understands the meaning in their heart. Rather, BLM as an organization emerged as a strong voice with specific policy concerns on which they could elaborate as well as a list of achievable political, policy-based, and radical yet achievable proposals that supporters could advocate for.
Among BLM’s many worthwhile advocacy targets are/were:
To increase public, professional, and legal accountability for police officers who commit violence on citizens in all cases and especially in cases involving Black and Brown folks.
To achieve specific legal justice for a variety of named individuals, including but not limited to Breonna Taylor, Ahmad Arbery, and George Floyd.
To craft and support legislation that alters the structure and funding of police departments, increases accountability for police brutality, and re-allocates several duties currently assigned to police officers to other, more capable government services.
BLM also did (and does) an EXCELLENT job of publicly decrying violence by those who March alongside them as well as consistently rebuking bigoted interlopers and bad actors who seek to turn the movement in a violent direction or who seek to make their demands seem violent in any way.
When pressed on any of their stated policy positions, there was a clear and consistent stance that could be elaborated on further immediately upon request—both in terms of the national interest as well as in terms of more local concerns.
The current pro Palestine protests have none of these things.
There is no clear platform other than “stop bombing Gaza and make sure Palestinians have sovereignty and equal rights.” And with that, I agree completely! But after that? No consensus from anyone about anything.
What terms of ceasefire does the Free Palestine movement want? What is the anticipated impact of a permanent ceasefire on Palestinians whose government is currently being held captive by Hamas? What is the impact on Israeli civilians who are still suffering from incoming Hamas rocket fire? Given that this latest bout of Israeli aggression began when Hamas terrorists broke an existing ceasefire to commit mass murder and other atrocities, how do protestors hope to prevent another similar event going forward?
What exact policies need to be written or adjusted or dismantled in order to achieve the movement’s vision? What is the movement’s vision? Sure, there’s the easy low-hanging fruit of, obviously, giving Palestine equal access to water and voting rights and public goods and removing checkpoints.
But after that? There seems to be SIGNIFICANT disagreement about actual solutions to intercultural concerns about violence and safety on all sides as well as what should happen to Israel as a whole. I personally favor a two state confederation at this time. But I have seen many others say that Israel should be dismantled as a nation entirely and that all Jewish Israelis should lose religious protection or should be expelled en masse from the land. I have seen people argue that everything should stay basically the same but Palestinians should just change the entire country’s name to Palestine and no longer be in segregated areas. That’s certainly one idea that has merit, but it also doesn’t account for how Jewish people will remain safe in the new nation-state of Palestine nor does it address the concerns that many protestors seem to have had about nation-states in the first place? How might a new nation affect non-Jewish Israeli citizens? What is the exact course of action for addressing Likud corruption? What is the manner in which Netanyahu should face justice? Should he simply be removed from power? Tried for war crimes? Disallowed from running for office?
Who, in the west, should we be looking to for answers to these questions? Certainly not JVP or SJP, both of which have extremely problematic histories against the Jewish community and in terms of their (lack of) commitment to facts and evidence. How are Jews supposed to feel safe at events these organizations sponsor.
Do western protests support Hamas or condemn it? Do western protests believe Hamas is a terrorist organization? Do they believe 10/7 was justified or worth celebrating?
Current protests have no clear answers to these questions. And that lack of clarity allows the most focused and violent voices to emerge most clearly.
I’m not saying all protestors in the west are violent. Far from it! I am saying that protestors’ lack of clarity on their aims are allowing bad actors to emerge most prominently. And if you can think of a better and more immediate fix to that than taking a week to study BLM as well as existing MENA-based anti-Likud activism, I am genuinely open to hearing it. Because I honestly and truly have not.
3. I would be totally fine if the only protestors left during that week were the clearly antisemitic ones. Then good faith actors could roundly condemn them and make a more focused and policy driven pro-Palestine movement that explicitly condemns their behavior.
Let’s put some numbers to Jewish fear right now.
In news that I’m sure will thrill all antisemites, it would take startlingly little effort to foment widespread violence against us and cause another genocide of the Jewish people.
I have had many fellow Jews express to me how overwhelming it is to see the rising antisemitism. I have seen many Jews express fear at being drowned out of public, online, and IRL spaces due to dangerously violent vitriol.
I have also seen people who claim to advocate for Palestine—especially western leftists—openly mock Jews who express this fear.
Finally, I and my fellow Jews have often expressed that, while we wholeheartedly support Palestinian freedom and self determination, it is exhausting to have to say so repeatedly, especially when we are trying to advocate for ourselves. This is not due to any latent or widespread hatred of Muslims, Arabs, or Palestinians. It is because we are an extremely maligned and marginalized minority that is fighting to be heard against strong, hostile forces that at best wish we’d shut up and at worst want us eradicated from the planet.
There is a disconnect about how much harm people can do to Jews by spreading antisemitism and refusing to dismantle their own internalized antisemitism—and everyone has internalized antisemitism. It is one of the oldest forms of prejudice in the world and is found in almost every single culture. It is as, if not more, pervasive than white privilege. Yes. You read that right. And if asked to elaborate, I will provide numbers on that to the best of my ability. For the purposes of this post, however, I want to focus on the global distribution of religious groups only.
Specifically, this disconnect is between Jews who are fully aware and feel the affects of this damage and goyim who simply do not comprehend our marginalization.
To help, let’s put some numbers to this. In this post, I’ll be using the Pew Research Center’s survey and findings on the Global Religious Landscape. This is the most recent data from a reputable source that I could find which surveyed every world religion at the same time. While the Jewish population has grown slightly in the intervening years, so have most (if not all) other religious populations around the globe. I wanted to use figures measured at the same time to avoid bias for or against any religious group.
For the purposes of this post, I will not be discussing folk religions or other religions. This is not because they are not important. This is because they are not a monolith and individual folk religions and other religions may have even fewer adherents per religion than Judaism. I am currently only focusing on religions and religious groups who have more adherents than Judaism.
In descending order of adherents, there number of people in the world belonging to these groups:
2,200,000,000 (2.2 Billion) Christians
1,600,000,000 (1.6 Billion) Muslims
1,100,000,000 (1.1 Billion) Religiously unaffiliated people
1,000,000,000 (1 Billion) Hindus
500,000,000 (500 Million) Buddhists
14,000,000 (14 Million) Jews
Reduced to the simplest fractions there are:
1100 Christians for every 7 Jews
800 Muslims for every 7 Jews
550 Religiously unaffiliated people for every 7 Jews
500 Hindus for every 7 Jews
250 Buddhists for every 7 Jews
Combined, there are 6,400,000,000 non-Jewish people in religions or religious groups (including religiously unaffiliated people).
This means that for every 7 Jews there are 3200 people in religious groups who outnumber us.
Jews are 0.2 % of the global population.
When we tell you that hate is dangerous, it is because…
It would only take 0.21% of 6.4 Billion people to hate us in order to completely overwhelm and outnumber every single Jewish person on the planet.
And given how violent and aggressive people have become toward us in recent weeks, that doesn’t seem far off.
No, most Christians, Muslims, Atheists/Agnostics, Hindus, and Buddhists do NOT hate Jews.
But if even 0.21% of them do hate us, Jews are at a legitimate and terrifying risk of ethnic cleansing and genocide.
It is not possible for Jews alone to fight this rising tide of hate. There simply aren’t enough of us. And many of us are too scared to tell you the truth: if you don’t vocally and repeatedly stand up for Jews (and not just the ones you agree with) you will be complicit in the genocide that follows. Police your own communities.
Nobody acting in good faith is asking you to abandon Palestinians or their fight for self determination and equality in their homeland. All we are asking is for you to learn about antisemitism, deconstruct it in yourself, and loudly condemn it when it occurs in front of you. We are asking you to comfort us and not run away when we are scared or even angry at you. Because a lot of us are angry with you, because we are extremely scared right now and many of you are not helping us. Many of you are actively and carelessly spreading dogwhistles that further the global rise in hatred against us.
You can support Palestine AND avoid Islamophobia WITHOUT making antisemitism worse. But you can’t stop antisemitism by staying silent in the face of it. And if you don’t speak up, you will get us killed. Silence, in this case, is quite literally violence.
Many of us have armed guards posted at our synagogues and schools and community centers because of this. I certainly had times where my synagogue and school had to have armed security for our safety.
The only reason more of us haven’t died already is because we have millennia of experience in confronting this kind of hatred and guarding against it.
But in pure numbers, if you don’t speak up for us now, we don’t have a chance at survival without support.
So, what can you do, specifically?:
* Make a stand or public statement about condemning antisemitism without mentioning another group. Acknowledge Jewish fear, pain, and current danger without contextualizing it in someone else’s. It could literally be something as simple as “Antisemitism is bad. There’s never a reason for it. I won’t tolerate it in presence in real life or online.” If you cannot bring yourself to publicly make this statement, you should have a serious look at yourself to understand why you can’t.
* Learn about the six universal features of antisemitism and the many, various dog whistles affecting the global Jewish community
* Do not welcome people who espouse rhetoric that includes any features from the above bullet point in your community unless you are able to educate them and eliminate that behavior.
* Check in on your Jewish friends, regularly and repeatedly. Do not wait for them to reach out to you. They are scared of you. Even if you don’t have the emotional space to have conversations about antisemitism. Just send a message once in a while, unprompted, “Jfyi, antisemitism still sucks. I support you.”
* Redirect conversations about which “side” is “right” to how to attain peace. Do this by saying that this line of argument is not conducive to peace, and link to a well-respected organization not widely accused of either antisemitism or Islamophobia that is devoted to achieving a peaceful resolution, increasing education, or providing humanitarian aid to relevant affected groups—including Jews, Israelis, Palestinians, Muslims, and Arabs. You can find over 160 such organizations at the Alliance for Middle East Peace https://www.allmep.org/
* Look to support experienced groups without widespread and verifiable claims of prejudice against either Jews or Muslims or Arabs or Palestinians. Many of these organizations can also be found at the AllMEP link above. Avoid groups on the shit list as well as unproductive and harmful movements.
* Do not default to western methods of political demonstration. Specifically, protests are not useful in attaining peace in western nations at this time. Israelis and Palestinians can and should protest to the beat of their abilities in Israel and Palestine so as to pressure their own governments. However, protests in western nations have proven to be poorly regulated and to further the spread of bigoted rhetoric and violence against Jews, Muslims, Arabs, and Palestinians. Furthermore, there are nearly as many Palestinians in the world as there are Jews. It is extremely easy and common for the voices of bad actors and bigots on all sides to completely drown out Jewish and Palestinian voices and concerns at these events.
* Spend more time listening and learning than speaking and acting. Anyone who tells you this conflict is simple is someone who is lying to you. Take the time to learn the ways in which your actions and words can get people hurt before joining the fray.
* Stop demonizing Zionism as a concept, even if you disagree with it. Understand that it is a philosophy with many different movements that often conflict with each other. The Zionism practiced by Netanyahu and the Likud party is NOT representative of most Zionists or interpretations of Zionism. It is an extremist form of Zionism known as Revisionist Zionism.
* Don’t deny Jewish indigeneity to the levant. It doesn’t help Palestine and hurts Jews by erasing our physical and cultural history as well as erasing the Jews who remained in Israel even through widespread diaspora.
* KEEP THE HOLOCAUST OUT OF YOUR MOUTH
Things That Are Always OK
* Denouncing Antisemitism loudly and publicly
* Denouncing Islamophobia loudly and publicly
* Telling your Jewish and Muslim and Arab friends you support them and won't abandon them
* Elevating the work of respected, widely accepted people and organizations devoted to attaining peace for all, rather than just one group of people.
* Develop media literacy
* Understand what aspects of the current western leftist movements Jews are criticizing, rather than assuming our criticisms are motivated by hatred for Palestine or Palestinians.
* Expressing sorrow for civilian deaths regardless of religion or nationality.
* When you are not Jewish and you share a post about antisemitism from a Jewish person, please say you’re a goy. This isn’t because you’re not welcome to share. This is because it is indescribably comforting to know we aren’t just talking amongst ourselves and screaming into the void. Let us know you are supportive of us. It doesn’t mean that you or we hate Palestine or Palestinians or that we oppose their full and equal rights in our shared homeland.

So I've been thinking...the approach to essentially 'bully' Garou into accepting a truth about himself he can't believe, is probably not going to be the most fruitful or helpful to him, especially if it comes across to him as something cruel, dismissive, mocking, humiliating, or patronizing (esp from a 'hero' he doesn't see as 'good.') That approach, I'm afraid - esp when taken the wrong way, can only make things worse, as we see with his accelerating transformations and stronger (defensive) refusals/denials.
Because essentially...forcing him into acceptance/resignation, by 'punishing' him, or having others repeatedly determine or label who he is for him, based solely on their (incomplete/limited) perceptions of him without addressing his side, resolving his trauma, or considering his feelings at all is a little....uhhmm;; Not the best approach into actually helping him heal or find himself. :') Towards true self-actualization. You feel what I mean?
Which is why I actually appreciate the further (expanded) input from Tareo and the civilians, because they, with their genuine bravery, honesty, and (most importantly) kindness, can show him how his 'goodness' (essentially him, as himself) is not something weak, shunned, ‘bad’, or hated. :') It's a perspective and form of appreciation/praise/acceptance from others he's likely never received before - from innocents who are genuinely receptive and grateful to him (instead of scared, judgemental, or hateful). Basically, the complete opposite (positive) treatment of what he's come to (negatively) expect since his childhood. It's...kind of an important bit of validation for him to get. (Especially from one who's been repeatedly hurt that his confidence in his good side - his best self, has been shattered and warped to such an extent that he can no longer believe in it as viable or true, and can only see/present himself at his worst - in a role that’s no longer him.) Even if he remains a little confused and shaken about receiving it for now, given time to think on it, it's still an important component to have - to have actually been given this kind of reception/encouragement and shown this possible path exists to him at all - for his future consideration.
So rather than pushing Garou into accepting he's a hero by force (by defining him on the outside), I think...it's probably more effective/enlightening/liberating for him to actually openly admit and uncover why he can't ever see himself as ‘good’ as a hero instead. :O (To examine why he mistakenly believes this 'truth' so strongly.) As Saitama one-sidedly bombarding him with truths and critiques, about how bad he is at being 'evil' or other such insults to his character for example, doesn't really resolve the core issue...(as that's not what he needs to hear; it just spirals and pushes him further into his monster 'shell'.)
Unless it actually gets to the point where Garou has to unload his share of grievances back, and offers his critiques towards Saitama (and the world) as well, for his imperfect 'good' heroism beyond just his overwhelming strength - aka: "you're strong, but so what? what of your duty? can you 'save the world' and all the overlooked crying kids with that flimsy cape?" etc. (Towards why Garou can't even believe or trust in his own heroism and ‘goodness’ -in his human self- by extension.) Otherwise the 'two-sided' confrontation won't feel fair, satisfying, or complete at all, until we actually get more of Garou's input revealing the crux of his feelings. aka the information Saitama can work with or leverage in a more helpful way - to accurately uncover the core of Garou’s issue and bring that to light. Basically, the fight's far from over with much more left to potentially show, but I don't think we (or Saitama) can get anywhere constructive either (towards true emotional catharsis) until we do.

TL;DR asides: Cause it’s been really fun and heartwarming to see Garou save people (shown both on purpose and accidentally, no matter how ‘bad’ he tries to act at his worst - there’s still ‘good’ in that side of him for others to see) and them genuinely thank him for it, which he’s probably never received or ever expected to happen. That validation towards himself -as he is, even when he appears ‘bad’ like this, is an important step to have when he reconsiders what’s actually viable (and what he personally wants) for his identity.
But if his side (his feelings) are never considered, without his core issue actually addressed or uncovered, or if Saitama continues to one-sidedly push him (and talk over him) by force towards accepting a truth/identity he can’t believe yet (aka deciding things for him, when he’s not ready for it - otherwise Saitama will always meet resistance and spiral him to an even worse state - for ex: a Saitama saying ‘you’re getting better!’ for his own lulz while Garou transforms worse is not it), or if Saitama actually starts ‘bullying’ Garou’s feelings/trauma once more gets exposed....then whoaaaa, that won’t be cool and I’ll have issues with Saitama’s rather cold/inconsiderate (morally questionable as a hero, towards unlikable) approach there. (Thankfully the manga has not gone that far - and has offered Garou other/new kinder perspectives, from Tareo and the civilians, that have given him pause on the way.)
Essentially Garou needs to be encouraged into accepting himself (and shown how others can accept him), and figuring out what he wants to be, on his own (from the inside), rather than forced or bullied into a decision or role that’s labeled/determined by others (from the outside). Otherwise it treats him exactly as he’s come to expect (ie judged, misunderstood, dismissed, ridiculed, etc; which is no change and no different from his childhood), and he can’t really find or define himself (towards self-actualization) when others keep shoving their perceptions on him. Because it’s...kind of a cycle he has to figure out how to break (free) from, with effective help, instead of spiraling him further into his worst (and farther away from his real self.)

So, much like with season 1, my thoughts on AssClass season 2 are... messy. Too messy for a straightforward review, at least. So let’s do it like last time and make a list of all the points I want to mention. Only this time, I’ll put it all below a spoiler bar, since I can’t really discuss some of these points without spoiling basically everything. Those of you who haven’t seen season 2 yet, consider yourselves warned.
Cool? Cool. Let’s do this.
-This season was way more lopsided than the first. The first ten or so episodes were honestly the worst stretch of this show yet, for various reasons I’ll get into momentarily. But once we hit the final exam arc, it basically slams on the gas and never lets up all the way to the end.
-I feel like the fanservice quotient was ramped up this season, and I did not appreciate it.
-The Kaede twist really caught me off guard. I was always wondering why she was so constantly positioned as one of the main supporting roles when she hadn’t really done anything, and the reveal that she’s been a tentacled assassin all along explained everything perfectly.
-Actually, in general, all the backstory/answers we got were great. Koro-sensei’s past gave such weight to his character and fully earned the far more dramatic turn the story takes in the season’s back half.
-As fun as the first encounter with the Reaper was, I still really hate the way Irina’s treated. She didn’t even really get to do anything in that arc! Karasuma had to save her ass while she watched from the sidelines!
-Karma and Nagisa’s big brawl was especially fun for how nasty and in-your-face it got.
-So, did anyone else absolutely fucking hate how Nagisa’s mom was handled? The show treats it like she’s just not very understanding or overly strict and Nagisa needs to make an effort to bridge the communication gap between them, but, like... this is abuse. This is straight-up fucking “report this psycho to child services” behavior. You do not respond to a parent bludgeoning their kid into submission by telling the kid they just need to try a little harder to stand up for themself. Fuck. That. Garbage.
-Also, I’m not a fan of how the mom stuff poisoned the well on Nagisa’s femininity. One of the reasons I liked him as a protagonist is that he was sort of shrimpy and girly and soft-spoken, so different from your typical loudmouth brawler shonen lead. And I wish that was just, like, a part of himself that he could learn to accept rather than a source of trauma he needs to get rid of.
-On a more positive note, Nagisa tutoring that troubled girl was a really sweet subplot.
-This may be a nitpick, but the final arc was way too dark for me. Not as in tone, but, like, the literal scenes were so dimly lit that I often struggled to make out what was going on. How am I supposed to enjoy this giant fucking monster brawl if it’s all shrouded in murky shadows and you can’t tell a tentacle from a tree?
-That said... yeah, that finale was excellent. Not every Shonen Jump series has the guts to end with a 20-minute-long prolonged scene of assisted suicide, let alone pull it off so emotionally. I’m gonna miss that big yellow blob.
-One of these days, I’ll find another shonen that can write romance worth a damn. Not gonna be today, though.
I think that about sums everything up. In conclusion, AssClass season 2 is a messy, imperfect ride with some damn great high points and some damn shameful low moments. I’d say on average it balances out to a 6/10, weaker overall than season 1 even if it has some of the individual best moments. Oh well, can’t win them all. I sure love a good villain. I love writing them, I love reading about them, I love watching them on screen, and I love unravelling them.
When writing No Pain, No GameI thoroughly enjoyed developing the character of Sean Cravanaugh, the evil mastermind at the centre of the plot. The whole process was extremely cathartic. So much so, in fact, that when the book came out and readers hated Sean for being so horrible and manipulative, I was almost taken by surprise.
This did get me thinking: was my love of strong villains uncommon? Did my ability to write a convincing villain make me a villain at heart? How did other writers feel about their own baddies, and how did they go about writing them?
I had to find out.
The Nuanced Villainy Trend
One trend that’s become more prominent in recent years, be it in literature or popular culture in general, is a shift on how we look at and portray villains. Nowadays, characters from the dark side are more nuanced, more complex and more intriguing than they used to be. We don’t just see what they do, but why they do it and the reasons that drive their behaviour take us on a rollercoaster ride. We’re no longer looking at the bad guys at a singular point in time, where they’re already at the apex of their villainy. We’re given a full 360 degrees view of what’s got them to that point — we see the world and their experiences from their point of view, and they earn some sympathy points along the way.
And that’s the thing. We hate what they do, and we can’t condone their actions, but we tend to hate them, as people, a little less. We wonder what we ourselves might have done when faced with the same circumstances. Through that new lens, they become almost endearing.
This blurs the lines, to a large extent, and the world seems to love it. Gone are the days of black and white as we’re increasingly exposed to the other side of the more traditional hero-focused stories. This is a good thing, according to author Sabrina Voerman, who states that ‘we need more stories told by villains because [she] believes we are all a little grey. No one is all good and no one is all evil.’
Where Villains are Born (or: are you a closeted villain if you can write a good villain?)
This all begs the question: why do we love this new trend so much?
My guess? Because it speaks to the darker, imperfect, highly flawed part of us we try so hard to conceal in our civilised day-to-day lives. When author Freya McMillanworks on villains for her own books, she admits she ‘thinks about the darkness in [herself] and ramps it up a lot, so it’s still believable’. And we love it because we can relate.
So, do you have to be a villain yourself to write a good villain? Not necessarily (and rather thankfully, I might add). I believe it’s more a reflection that we, collectively, are starting to embrace every facet of what it means to be human. We’re letting go of the typical and rather unattainable hero-in-shining-armour ideal in favour of the myriad impulses, idiosyncrasies and desires that make us who we are as a species.
Creating a convincing villain these days is no longer about handpicking a singular cause to justify someone falling off the rails of socially accepted behaviour — abuse, loss and trauma being recurring favourites on that front. Instead, it’s all about exploring the complexity of human nature, psychology and the full colour palette of human emotions.
For Sabrina Voerman, it’s a delicate balance, because ‘villains have to have reason, and that does not always mean some traumatic event pushed them into being bad. [She] likes a villain that has good intentions, but will do anything to get there’. In fact, she highlights that ‘understanding the villain is key, and giving them a few redeeming qualities humanises them, allowing readers (or at least [herself]) to see themselves in the villain.’
Are Modern Villains Just Normal People Doing Bad Things?
So, where does this land us, I hear you ask?
Are we all villains at heart?
Are good, modern-day villains just normal people doing bad things?
Yes and no. We’re at least leaning into the idea that those once crystal-clear distinctions now have blurrier edges than before.
Modern day villains often stand somewhere in the middle between right and wrong. They’re divisive characters which we can’t help but ‘sort of like’ and ‘sort of loathe’. And we’re undecided because we’ve come to realise that, in the world we live in, where things get amplified, blown out of proportions and re-tweeted till they get viral, it’s increasingly easy for anyone to be publicly perceived and pointed to as a ‘villain’. Heroes can become villains, and vice versa. It could happen to anyone. At any time. Almost overnight.
In her writing, Freya McMillan looks at it rather simply: ‘[she] doesn’t necessarily describe them to [herself] as ‘villains’. In [her] mind [she] writes about people who are victim of circumstance, or are affected by traits that are beyond their control.’
Author Tara Lake’s view is similar. Her approach is ‘comparable to any character: [she] considers their limitations, their desires and motivations, and how far they’re willing to go for those desires’.
What does that mean for writers?
The key takeaway for us writers is that we need to keep moving away from the traditional and now antiquated, overly simplified view of good versus evil. Gone are the days of irreproachable angels fighting stone-hearted demons, dark beings who were born bad and only ever did horrible things for all the wrong reasons.
Quite the opposite, in fact. They have layers. Forget black and white, or even shades of grey. Like kaleidoscopes, they’re made of a thousand shapes and brushstrokes from all the colours in the rainbow. They’re intricate and intriguing, and because this all makes them more humanised than they used to be, they can easily be hailed as the underdogs we want to back.
As writer, I find this trend fascinating. The prospect of getting to paint a whole different picture when it comes to villains is incredibly exciting. It opens up a world of possibilities that forces us to think beyond stereotypes, to gain (and portray!) fresh perspectives and to experiment with our characters in different ways. Something, I’m sure, readers everywhere will also appreciate!

ALRIGHT I'VE BEEN GIVEN PERMISSION TO RANT AND RANT I SHALL
under the cut since spoilers
Just as I've said in my previous post, I love reading hcs that people have of canon characters, and ikevamp is no exception. I feel like there's an infinite number of possibilities because 90% of these characters are based on real-life counterparts and we can take some aspects of that into the headcanons. It just makes the experimenting all the more fun and interesting.
And because of these hcs, the interactions between each of the residents are so much more lively. Sebastian, for example, is much more unhinged in this story than in the original routes, and that's partly because there's a built-in connection between him and the other characters (including MC) that makes their conversations that much more fun to read.
I feel like one problem this series has (that so many ikevamp routes has too) is the pacing. And as a writer, I understand the difficulty in wanting to put so many things within a limited number of chapters. There's the one month time limit that MC has to fall in love with a suitor. And within that month, you need to introduce the suitor to MC, have her interact with them enough for them to form romantic feelings to each other, and have them get together as a couple. ON TOP OF THAT, there needs to be a secondary conflict with the suitor and their past that needs to be resolved within the month.
There's also the chapter limit of 25 chapters, with each chapter being not that long, either.
One thing I like about Salai's story is how you dabble small clues about his past ever since his first introduction. Even if you're not aware that he has a past with Leonardo, there's subtle clues throughout his interaction with him and MC that you get a glimpse of his past before he reveals it. Like how he speaks Italian, is from Milan, he's a painter, he has a cat, etc.
So many ikevamp suitors just have the big reveal about their past so late into their routes that it's just an unnecessary info-dump. It really hurts the plot and my brain when they do that, so I appreciate you taking the plot in small little chunks.
However, one thing that confused me a little bit was how the conflict with Leo and Salai was resolved. I know Salai spoke to Comte and Comte was like "I'll speak to Leo about it" but I didn't really see the plot resolve completely? Unless I missed something, of course. Or is Salai moving away from the manor, away from Leonardo, the resolution he gets? Is Salai not needing Leonardo's companionship the development? Leo just seems like a big a-hole for not wanting to take responsibility for his actions in the past.
Oh, speaking of MC, I love how you gave her such a relevant role in the story. You had her speak out for Salai against Leo, her comforting Salai through his emotional instability, her helping him with his financial problems. It's nice to have a MC who has an active role in the plot rather than a MC who can't-do-anything-by-herself-and-I-don't-have-a-decent-opinion. She knows what Salai needs, and she's here for it!!

Anyways, here's the long rant I've been allowed space for :DD Even with all the imperfections, I really did enjoy reading this.
And thank YOU for taking the time to write the story, a full 20+ chapters about your OC!! I feel like this is the least you deserve with all the time and hard work you put into this project.

Things will feel rushed, I'm sure I could have gone deeper into symbolism, but this is just a fun silly little project, which is also why I encourage you to ask questions. Everything in the route make sense to me because he is my character and I may have not realized I didn't add info. I am proofreading as I post but that doesn't mean I won't miss something.

Why the Jungle Cruise is basic.
And just so you guys know, there's nothing wrong with basic, it can be enjoyable. I just expected a better movie with the casting they had, and with a little more originality. Movies like these are popular for a reason.
Spoilers obviously.
So we start off with a proposal for an expedition into the Amazon to find a magical plant that can heal any ailment. They are citing the ongoing “Great War” as reason to find it and aid the troops getting sick in the trenches. Yes love this, well done you establish the legend, the timeline, the goal and set the plot up in under 5 minutes.
We then move onto a classic “sneak around to steal what you need and then fight in close quarters using what's around you to get away” scene. While cliché, still a staple to any magical archeologist adventure movie, and it helps to establish Lily’s character here.
She's seen as impulsive, determined, brave but also graceless, cocky, untrained in anything to defend herself, but also intelligent and her quick thinking can be hit or miss. She’s not a female character thats great at everything she does, she doesn't fight these men hand to hand but rather tries to use her surroundings to slow them down so she can run. They keep with these qualities through out the movie as well. I really appreciate this direction here, because it makes her feel more real. Lily is set up as the adventurous female protagonist, and my only grip with her is she's the “powerful” female symbol. Trying to make her femininity closer to masculinity and therefore undermining what makes being female so great. Instead of focusing on the unique strengths women possess they try to make her “not like other girls”.
Yes, I love how imperfect her character is, and her spunk and grit. However it would have been refreshing to have her maybe display her “rebellious” nature through wearing modified dresses for easier mobility rather than pants. Because there are girls out there that want to do adventurous things but still wear dresses. I think the costume department could have come up with some really creative designs.
Historically at the time, trousers had just started becoming common for women to wear, due to the war and increase in sports activities for women. (it wouldn't be until the second war that even more women worked in the factories and that after the war they didn't want to give up the mobility pants offered) The whole pants thing felt too forced with incessant dialog with the characters about it. They treat the audience like that cant pick up on small details like that, understand even a basic bit of the historical setting or I don't know, can research it themselves if they need to. Its too in your face.
Now Frank, a skipper on the Amazon River giving tours. His introduction scene was the perfect nod to the ride filled with puns, the hippo, waterfall, and tribal people (really enjoyed that part because it is such a fun ride). He comes off slightly aggressive, a conman, and all around just rude to anyone and everyone. A true loner, tired of life and taking his feelings of longing and irritation out on those around him. You can just feel the physical and emotional exhaustion on him in the beginning and a little through out, but I also feel like the writers had trouble keeping his character constant.
Its a small thing, and it might be the Johnson just couldn't do it, but Frank really should have had a Spanish accent, not an American one. He is one, Spanish and two, everyone else in town has a Spanish accent. A town he built. Just something that would make more sense, but again a small detail.
His first interaction with Lily is one of just complete disregard to her as a person, talking down to her, calling her pants/ lady (pants is an American term that is considered quite vulgar and insulting to Europeans), insulting her past memories driving her current motivations. He treats her as if she’s not capable, weak and simply a scared little girl.
I’m all for characters with faults but this is a man who’s friends and partner is a woman leading her people. I feel like Franks character would give women unique respect at the time due to the people around him and that this man has never been to modern day Europe and has had 400 years to outgrow any societal norms in 1500 Spain. It doesn't make sense and simply feels like a stupid “sexist” jab thrown in there to make the movie look “progressive” and “empowering”. (plus that stupid bit with the whistling historically inaccurate and unnecessary)
Now this movie truly made me hate the Enemies to Lovers trope. These characters did nothing but bicker and argue the whole time, and treat each other horribly. They never showed a inkling of liking each other as people just this weird sexual tension that didn't have anything to do with the story. I hate plots being built on adrenaline fueled “love” (insert sexual attraction) and nothing more. (Examples: Jurassic World, Sinbad, Prince of Persia, basically most action romance movies.)
If they really wanted a romantic agenda, they should have made it healthier, less toxic, or heck even have an established relationship at the beginning. These movies rely on cheap romantic subplots that are just poorly written and a weak writing tactic, they are too scared to write outside this formula thats been used for decades.
Now this is where if they changed just this simple thing, the entire story would change and be that much better. They become best friends. Their matching strong willed personalities, shared goal, and drive to help each other would have been so much fun. Their banter would flow better, their team work could have been built stronger. But writers are too scared to make anything platonic or simply familial.
On the familial note, I have to say the Houghton siblings are one of the best sibling relationships I have seen in a long time. Its a shame it was over shadowed by “Lets make out” Frank and Lily. We could have seen more of how they love each other in that sibling way, yes we got a little, but they are in a life and death situation and there isn't the right amount of worry over the others life. Especially when they have MacGregor clearly state the level of loyalty he has for Lily and how it’s them against the world. If it truly was, then I would have liked to see their bond actually portrayed that way (like they literally removed MacGregor from the story).
Now my personal beliefs aside, MacGregor is a character that was cheated. He wasn't given proper role in this story. He was thrown in for political agenda, and comedy relief. I appreciate his growth through the story, his finding confidence and joy in life. I would have loved to see His and Franks friendship more, because it was could have been really fun but they didn’t really do anything with it besides a talk and laughing at his jokes. (also on that whole Frank accepting him thing, if Frank could do that, then he could treat Lily Better)
Now the villains of the story. Cursed Conquistadors and a German Prince. One completely useless and the other underutilized due to the others unnecessary presence. I understand what they were trying to go with here, the main villain meddling in magical affairs' thinking he can back stab the forces with no consequences.
They didn’t balance them well at all. Remove the prince. I think simply mentioning the war to establish a timeline is enough, you don't have to drag a German Villain into it. They couldn't decide if they wanted him to be scary or comedic relief. I will admit the bee scene was funny, but made his character all the more confusing. (also a sub cant go in the amazon) And you can replace him setting the conquistadors free with erosion/weather/flooding, basically a force of nature. The prince is a noncharacter.
I think putting full focus on the cursed conquistadors and Frank would have made for a more well balanced story and adding more emotion into it full of betrayal and grief. I would have liked more dialog between Frank and Aguirre, something to show how deep of a bond they had. I feel like movies love this whole “we were like brothers” line only to throw it away and have the characters act almost indifferent to each other.
Perhaps a scene from Aguirre’s POV on how he perceived Franks “betrayal” and the grief of knowing that he failed his daughter (another thrown away plot point) and the growing bitterness and looking to blame anyone but himself. Perhaps showing pieces of the past from both his and Franks POV and how he starts to twist it to fit the narrative he wants to mask his guilt.
Lily now in the story as a found friend alongside MacGregor there to help Frank settle the ghosts of his past as well as get a cure all for their country and allies would have been fresh and given the audience an emotionally well rounded experience. (writing these days are lackluster and stick to the borders of what's been done before)
Seriously this was a huge lost and wasted opportunity for some cheap jokes instead of deep character relationships and plot with depth. Characters are what make the story and when you start failing them the story follows.
Now the ending....they are cowards. I get it they were doing the whole happy ending where the girl gets the guy, yada yada, but if they had not just properly built the conflict between Aguirre and Frank, making the final “battle” all the more heart wrenching and bitter sweet. It just felt...there. Like the audience doesn't feel this sense of them having known each other their whole lives.
Now imagine instead, Lily places the flower in Franks mouth and he breaths his final breath. She then does the same for the other conquistadors, her heart going out for their long painful lives and a feeling of peace settles over the Amazon. She returns home, medicine in hand, ready to live life to the fullest, holding her short time with Frank close to her heart. Knowing that his time had come, and while she grieves she doesn't feel bitter about it.
Yes, it would have been a sad ending, but it would have been equal parts sweet and inspiring. A message of enjoying your life and not to be consumed with regrets, shame, anger, and resentment (others and self) but instead seek forgiveness and peace.
It simply comes down to they just wrote a surface level character interaction forced romance action adventure with magic thrown in, and what I was expecting was a bestfriends action adventure. There's way more little nitpicks I didn't mention, but thats just one of my things. I like some realism to my stories, even the magical ones lol.
Will I watch it again, probably if I’m already in a mind numbing state but I wont willingly seek it out on my own lol.

The Rebel/叛逆者: A Review of Sorts
After being only semi-invested in the Rebel, I ended up getting so into it in the final weeks of its release, I’ve shelled out on IQIYI premium just to get the final couple of episodes a few days earlier.
That’s right kids, it’s a Review of Sorts. Unfortunately, I could not find a translation of the novella the drama is based on, so will be looking at it as a separate entity.
Most of this post is spoiler-free, however I have dedicated a few paragraphs at the end of it to discussing the final episode, as there are a few specific things about it I wanted to mention. There is a clear spoiler warning before that part.
If you don’t want to risk it, TL;DR version of this review goes something like this: Rebel is very decent, and positively one of the best things that I have seen to come out of China since I’ve jumped into that particular rabbit hole. It’s pretty well written, it’s very beautifully dressed and shot, and the cast is killing it. I thought it dropped the ball a little in post production, and I did not always love the pacing. Other than that, it’s incredibly decent, and well worth watching, unless communist propaganda really irks you, in which case stay very well away.
I have been having many conversations with @supernovasimplicity all the way through watching this drama, so there are likely to be some thoughts here that are influenced by those.
The story centers around Lin Nansheng, a struggling servicemen in the Guomingdang party. He has a great analytical mind, and absolutely no emotional capacity for his job. He has trouble handling violence, he is impulsive, he cannot speak to his superiors without bursting into tears, and has nothing even remotely resembling a poker face. And that is what makes this drama as enjoyable as it is.
I don’t think Lin Nansheng’s journey would have been nearly as exciting had he started it from a place of competence. He botches up everything he touches because his big brain switches off the moment his emotions kick in. And so, when you see him grow in confidence, learn to control himself, learn to fake his smiles and compliments, you can’t help but feel a strange sense of pride. It also makes Lin Nansheng very likeable as a character for reasons other than Zhu Yilong’s ability to look like a bush baby.
It did take me a while to feel fully engaged with his performance - not because there is anything lacking in it, but just because it’s hard to be truly surprised by his choices after the exposure I have given myself to his work. That said, at about a half-way point I got charmed by him anyway, and there were quite a few scenes that were truly mesmerising. There were scenes where he broke out of the familiar mould of big unguarded eyes and fluttering wet eyelashes, and tried something that was not pretty: every time to a great success. I am hoping to see more of that in his future work.
I really wanted to like the female lead, Zhu Yizhen, but unfortunately both the way she was written and the way she was performed by Tong Yao left me somewhat cold. It did not help of course that the screenplay ended up sidelining her at every turn, leaving her with very little personal agency. She was set up so interestingly, but in the end her sole purpose became being someone for Lin Nansheng to pine over. It is particularly curious from a perspective of meta storytelling: seeing how this is all centered around superiority of communism, which as a whole was, arguably, ahead of its time in the matters of binary gender equality.
The ensemble cast of the drama is stunning. Wang Yang came very close to stealing the show at several points as Chen Moqun, somehow managing to make his rather unlikeable character interesting. I can say the same thing about Zhu Zhu who absolutely shined as Lin Xinjie, showing an incredible range and imagination in her performance.
The overarching story of the show is engaging, with some incredibly suspenseful elements; every narrative arc including a nice progression through it. As spy thrillers go, it was fairly well plotted. You could if you go looking for a few things that did not pay off in a satisfying way (notably, the Chekhov’s cyanide capsule), but you overall the story really was well told for the most of it.
I did, however, feel like the pacing started to fall apart in the last quarter of the drama. Last episode in particular really did feel rushed, not just due to its pace, but also in a way it failed to pay off the final mission in any visible way. There will be more on that in the spoiler section of this post.
Important to note that The Rebel is a show made in Communist China in the year 2021. It does not ideologically side-step from the path that was laid out for it by that fact. Which is to say, it is, undeniably, filled with propaganda. Communists are the good guys, and if you think a good guy (or gal) is not a communist, they probably secretly are. With one exception of a friendly character who is not a communist, and whose fate we actually never find out. Curious, that.
The Rebel is not a kind of a show where censorship-appeasing scenes are shoehorned in. It’s a kind of a show in which the main theme is Sacrifice For the Party.
Aside from the being the moral vector of the show, Mao’s gentle teachings explicitly help get Ling Nansheng out of prolonged depression following his injury, and almost annoyingly, this sat incredibly well with the character, as he was written. Lin Nansheng is conceived as this naive idealist who wants to be on the front line, who needs validation and support of others. His - and I can’t believe I’m saying this - his being disillusioned in his beliefs and choosing to join a party which includes people whom he likes and trusts makes sense. Him finding this one thing that gives him hope and letting it propel him into gaining confidence and competence makes sense.
In many ways, the Rebel is a story of Lin Nansheng’s failure to become an antagonist within the world of the drama.
I have honestly spent this past couple of weeks pondering whether being well written makes political propaganda better or worse, whether the subtlety of it makes it more or less palatable, whether it’s enough, as a viewer, to be aware of it to shrug it off. Ultimately, this is not something I could or should make moral judgements on, but I do believe that it’s possible to acknowledge the fact that propaganda exists in the drama, and still appreciate it for a good piece of television that it is.
That said, I am very well aware that me being kind of okay with it stems entirely from my own removal from the culture this is made in, and I am, perhaps, lucky to even have a choice as to whether I want to engage with a product which is, undoubtably, here to dress political ideology in fancy clothes.
I have, on the other hand, also seen many things in Russian media of the “Annexation of Crimea is Good Actually” variety and those make me feel very unwell, so feeling somewhat at ease with blatant political propaganda in Chinese media makes me the biggest hypocrite.
But, I digress.
Before we go into some specific plot-related things, I would like to mention that the Rebel has this weird dichotomy in which the production is sublime, and the post-production… not so much. The show very well shot. Every element of it sits perfectly together, not a single prop out of place, not a single extra underdressed, not a page of script not put to good use. It’s lit to perfection. It’s scored beautifully. So much of this show is just stunning.
And then… there is post-production.
This is not even about bad CGI (and the CGI is, indeed, bad), it’s just that most of post-production as a whole feels rushed.
Starting with surprisingly imperfect editing, which at times just fails to make the scene flow together. The final line of dialogue would be spoken within a scene, and it would fade to black instantly without a single breath to indicate a full stop. A montage sequence would be created, but every shot within it condensed to a second, making it feel incredibly fast-paced when the effect should be the opposite. There would be a cut away from a speaking character and to the same speaking character from a slightly different angle, making it dynamic without any reason to do so. There are a couple of truly startling jump-cuts.
I did not speed this gif up. This is part of a romantic montage, edited like it’s a goddamn action sequence.
And of course dear old friend slowing down footage shot at 24FPS. Please don’t do this. You think no one notices - but we do.
There are other tell-tale signs of production rushing to the finish line: occasional, but very noticeable ADR glitches, very sloppy job done at sound mixing, which contribute to parts of the show feeling ever so slightly off.
It’s not unforgivable, but it does make me wish the same amount of care and efforts that went into shooting this drama would also go into it after it was all in the can.
Oh, and just because if you know me you know I have a professional fixation on fights, and I am happy to say most action scenes are toe-curlingly delightful. Hot damn those fights are good. I am absolutely in love with the shot below, for example. Placing an actor behind a piece of set so he can exchange places with the stunt double during a one shot is such an old trick, but the execution, timing and camerawork are just... flawless. This is what perfection looks like.
Now we got all that out of the way...
SPOILERS FOR THE SERIES FINALE BELOW
Here’s the thing. I wanted to love the ending and I found that I could not.
The final mission was presented as important, and honestly the scene in which Zhu Yizhen is sending the vital message out as Lin Nansheng holds his ground in hand to hand fight is incredibly dynamic. Party, this is due to the fight itself being incredibly well choreographed, yes, but it’s also where it sits within the narrative, how high the stakes are for everything surrounding it.
But then, the tension all but bleeds out. The Important Message is sent, the fight is won, and we are treated to ten minutes of a very slow car chase, problem of which is not even its speed as much as its placing within the story. As in, by this point both of those operatives have lost their cover, and completed their Very Important Mission. It would be very sad if they died, but their survival does not technically contribute to their cause. Moreover, Zhu Yizhen getting mortally injured in order to protect Lin Nansheng as part of her mission read a little empty when the mission is technically over.
While I personally found Lin Nansheng slow recuperation and his low key ending enjoyable, I think I would have preferred to have seen a more tangible pay-off to all the sacrifices made in the name of “bright communist future”, just a little more justification for every moment of death and despair we witnessed. I would have certainly at the very least preferred to see Wang Shi’an’s death on screen. Considering how many likeable characters martyred themselves on screen, denying us the death of the one antagonist just seemed cruel.
I really did love the ambiguity of the final few scenes however, if we consider the children choir at the end a fantasy. The idea that Lin Nansheng will live out his life in this hope that Zhu Yizhen is still alive, imagining her just outside of his field of vision, his only joy being in this fantasy of her… now, that is incredibly strong. I equally like the idea of rest being promised to him at the end of his journey, and said rest being painful, and slow and unwelcome.
But it felt like as they chose not to to lean into the “sweet” part of the bitter-sweet tone of the ending and we’re unable not commit to the “bitter” part either, so it lands with a splat which is somewhat lacklustre.

I am more or less out of Zhu Yilong’s filmography to watch, which is probably a good thing at this point. I have just emerged out of several back to back work projects - literally today - and will hopefully once more have time for things I grew to enjoy doing during the lockdown.

Maybe it was his midnight-blue hair, or perhaps it was his ocean eyes, but the very moment I laid my eyes upon him my mind immediately thought, “Wow, he’s very good looking… charming... I really like his vibe.” That was the first reason why he piqued my interest, rather, the initial reason why I fancied him. My eyes were drawn to him and the fact that Kay bombarded me with a truckload of his pictures didn’t help at all, I just fell deeper into the hole. But as if that wasn’t enough, she started spamming me with utapri songs and I fell in love immediately. They are all such good singers but there’s one of them who sticks out to me the most, as expected, it’s Tokiya. His voice has this intricate and refined softness that seemed to caress my ears and touch my soul. He has such a sweet (and might I add a handsome) voice, kudos to Miyano Mamoru for that.
So I started watching the anime and through that, I got to know him better. At first, he seems cold with an air of loneliness and uneasiness dawning on him. But as the series progresses, I discovered that he’s a good-natured, warm, and dedicated person who loves singing and music with all his heart and all. He’s hardworking, dedicating everything to his craft. He has pride in it, so when he was told that his singing has no ‘heart’ it affected him a lot. That caused a lot of distress in his system, and the fact that his company is pushing him to pursue other things than being a singer added to that. His passion for his craft is burning, a fire that no one could put out. That’s one of the things that I love about him. He’s dedicated to everything he does. He’s a perfectionist but he’s also a caring person who cares a lot about the starish members. He’s genuinely a good person but that doesn’t mean he’s perfect. He strives for improvement and development all the time. He helps the members whenever they need. Most importantly, his attitude towards his passion is respectable and admirable.
I might’ve said a lot of things but I guess that only means I love a lot of things about him. He’s such a beautiful soul that inspires me to be more dedicated to my passion, to make my dreams come true no matter what it takes. His path towards his dream was rough, it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows but that’s life, isn’t it? Despite that, he kept walking towards his dream. He’s admirable, respectable, and irresistibly loveable. That being said, I love all the things that made his character; that made Tokiya Ichinose be the kind of character that he is right now.
PS. Miyano Mamoru played a big part too. His insane talent gave life to Tokiya’s character.

When I first watched the Utapri anime like 6 years ago, having a best boy didn't cross my mind. At first, I was just most interested in Tokiya out of all the boys because I just thought he looked cool. I liked how mysterious he seemed and also, his hair, probably just because it was blue tbh. Either way, good design.
However, what really got me attached to him wasn't his looks. I then liked Tokiya's serious personality. I like how he starts off cold and stoic but how throughout the games and anime, he slowly softens up. I didn't just like his personality, I could also relate to his perfectionism and hard-working side, even when he exhausts himself, which is something I admit I also have. I continue to relate to him now after all this time, and that's why he's such a good character to me.
Besides that, his songs are nice to listen to and he has just a very pleasant voice. It's nice just to go listen to his voice after a long day. In a way, liking Tokiya also got me into the whole Utapri franchise: made some friends, made a couple of good memes, all that kinda stuff.
Also, I feel like it's a crime not to mention this so: he thicc. Like, dang, no wonder the guy only eats salads because all the fats he eats goes straight to that ass of his. (I am sorry that you had to read that.)
Overall, I just think he's neat. To me, he's relatable and has a nice character development. Tokiya is and will continue to be my best boy. :)
REN JINGUJI

Ren Jinguji, the 5th member of Starish is without any shame my favorite character of the Uta no prince sama series. Though often disregarded Ren is and always will be my most favorite and I firmly believe that he has one of the most, if not the most depth in his character. I love Ren a lot however because of his surface charismatic attitude he is usually labeled as a “playboy” or a “lothario”. This is not correct and it should never define him, as he actually is one of the most gentle and compassionate characters of the series. Ren has a very deep surface characterization and personality that is never usually recognized unless you truly take the time to understand WHY Ren acts the way he does, and WHY he makes the choices that he makes. My favorite part about loving characters is being able to accept them for their demons and embrace what others would see as the “imperfections” in them. That Is the best way to truly love them. I love Ren because of his motives, choices, and most of all his passionate loving heart. Although the pain he hides and the personality of who he really is, is hidden under a mask of charisma, he never loses himself deep within.
He’s misunderstood, but he’s beautiful. He’s so deep, from the everlasting devotion to loving his passed on mother, to always cherishing memories and the past bond he had with his childhood best friend Masato, to going against what his brother wants of him because he wants to fight to have a choice and to be passionate about something that he wants to love, because HE wants to love it. Ren didn’t have the love that a lot of people had at such a young age, he made a path for himself and along the way succumbed to the human faults that we all falter from within the hardest times in our life or even dicult events. He almost gave up, just as I know many of us had almost done before, as I know and can relate to, and still do now.
But he dusted himself o and picked up where he left o, making himself happy from once the feeling of being a hollow shell with no reason why he even existed to realizing that the most important thing in the world to him was cherishing the people who made him see the world in colors and seeking the choices that had been stripped from him at such a young age. He broke free from the chains of his family, his past, and his regrets to spread a beautiful pair of rose wings, his own wings to fly. And I hope he always flies. I will always love him, and wish nothing but the best for him whatever that be.

Ren Jinguji- the sexy, charming and flirty member of the STARISH boys. The youngest of the Jinguji family, a troubled child who grew up without a mother. A person who possesses many charms and is blessed with the gift of beauty. A red rose he was, beautiful yet his thorns are to be avoided. Beneath his passionate and seductive mannerisms there is a boy that craves genuine affection, from the one he truly adores and cherishes.
Ren Jinguji to me initially was one with a beautiful, attractive deep baritone, who is voiced by none other than the legend- Suwabe Junichi himself. The voice is an accurate fit of how this stereotype of a charming bishie should be, youthful and sensitive, and at times warm and seductive. His portrayal brings out the appeal of the character, the emotions and thoughts a troubled young adult such as the ‘useless third son’ lived through. Many would see him as a romantic one, one who showers those around him with attention and passion. Within however lives a rebellious soul who distrusts many, but still somehow desires that ray of sunshine that brightens his lonely soul.
Ren Jinguji is one that deserves real love, someone who appreciates him for who he is.
SYO KURUSU

Why do I like Syo, huh? Well, there are a lot of reasons! Some of them are more personal ones. First of all, Syo has always been my best boy, since UtaPri (the anime) exists. So ten long years now.
His fashion style is the first thing I noticed and it immediately intrigued me. I remember that my first thought, after seeing him in season one, was “Woah, he looks really cool!” even though Syo was just in his school uniform! I think what also made me interested in him was his energetic persona. The way he looked up to Ryuya Hyuga and wanted to follow in his footsteps was really sweet to me as well. Syo’s enthusiasm and positive attitude actually encouraged me to become stronger in a way too, if I’m being honest. I, personally, have always found his songs motivating and they made me feel better. I really came to love Syo in his episode in season one. When he talked about his childhood and how weak he was, I really felt with him. From that moment on I cheered him on and Syo definitely became my favorite character. My interest never wavered over the next seasons either.
I also have personal reasons why I love him so much. I just feel very connected and relate to him a lot, y’know? We have quite a few things in common. Syo and I have the same eye color, we have both played the violin since we were little, and were born weak and with pretty much the same health and heart issues. I like to say that Syo “saved” me, which is true. There is also the fact that the blonde and I are both on the shorter side (and regularly get teased for it), too! Though, I’m even a little shorter than him.
But to be more positive again, there is just so much more to him than meets the eye at first! Syo is more than just the stereotypical short sporty character. He really cares for his friends and wants the best for them. Syo’s friendship with every STARISH member is different but still close. He’s also protective of the ones around him. Syo really cares about his little twin brother too, which can be seen in the games and the few times he talked about him in the anime. Syo’s big heart easily balances out his, sometimes, tsundere behavior and I love him for that. This blonde idol is just a great guy and deserves all the love he’s getting and more.
Seriously, stan Syo Kurusu, guys!

Syo Kurusu is my favourite idol within the utapri games and any other form of media pertaining to the franchise. He is my favourite idol because of several factors, one of which being that his voice actor is Hiro Shimono, who voices Zenitsu from Demon slayer and Lucifer from “Devil is a part timer”. Syo is a very outgoing character and is talented in many aspects athletically. Born with a heart disease, he continues to persevere throughout the myriads of life’s problems in front of him.
He’s extremely outgoing and is proficient in the martial art of Karate and desires to strengthen his body more than what it is currently. He is best friends with Natsuki and can communicate with each other proficiently. Syo is my favourite character within the franchise because of his resolve, perseverance and great chemistry with Natsuki and his teammates. Hiro Shimono did the character justice by making his voice one of young, adventurous and energetic. With that said, Syo is a character I truly enjoy within the franchise and wish to see more of him.
CECIL AIJIMA

Greetings, princes and princesses, and welcome to a world of princes, questionably talking cats, and magic! I’m of course talking about Cecil Aijima, our foreign prince of UtaPri! So, why do I like Cecil Aijima? It’s borderline ridiculous, but it’s because of Cecil’s birthday. More specifically, Cecil’s Birthday Cruise card. But, I should start at the beginning.
Back when I first watched the anime, I thought Cecil was a little bit of a brat towards literally everyone, and one of my least favorites at the time. After watching through the rest of the anime though, I started to like him a lot more than I did before. To me, he had matured a lot after season 2, and never turned back to that bratty self. And so, when playing SL, he might not have been my favorite, but I didn’t hate him. Then, that one fateful day, I decided to pull in his birthday gacha. To my surprise, I had gotten the card in my first pull! Then the story dragged me into the Cecil Appreciation Group. I thought the story was incredibly cute. Then I got more Cecil cards so I could read more stories. Then the cycle repeated itself again. And now, well, if I’m writing this, I think you know what happened to me afterwards. I’ll be here, doing my best for him.

I remember first watching Utapri in middle school and questioning. "Well shit- this is my life now..." and I didn't really have a favorite character at the time. I was always bouncing between characters like Syo, Otoya, even the teachers. However it was season 2 that made me realize who my true favorite was. Despite his at first cocky nature when he was first introduced, Cecil to me was amazing! His singing was magical, his origins even more fascinating. You wouldn't think Utapri would turn that down the magic route but it somehow did.
As the seasons went on, and as I got more into the series, he just became more of a love to me. His kindness and child-like nature and curiosity, he felt different than the other characters.
I love the other characters, yes but him?
Something about him just felt right! He not only seems to be a protector for those he cares about but also feels like he would be the best person to be around. Always wanting to do anything new and exciting just to peak his curiosity and to learn more. Ever since then, he has always been my favorite. The one and only Annapolis Prince, Aijima Cecil.

ooh funfun. this is something i do a lot for characters i write about to make the reader character realistic, so this is right up my alley :3 this focuses primarily on personality rather than physical types (with a small exception)

Tsukishima
for Tsukki it wouldn’t necessarily be someone exactly like him, but they’d have definite similarities
they’d earn his respect before they’d get his heart
hands down this person needs to have a thick skin. i think generally Tsukki doesn’t outright insult or harshly tease (like with Hinata & Kags) the people he really cares about or has affection for (look at his relationship with Yamaguchi), but he is blunt and sometimes unintentionally snaps or is just straight up mean
if someone is easily affected by that, it’s a no go, sorry
not to say they couldn’t get their feelings hurt, and he would feel bad especially if his crush had already developed, but initially there would need to be a resistance or retort to that kind of thing. they’d understand that his words come from a place of both honesty and care, and any lashing out is just a result of stress and unresolved emotion
yeah he’d be attracted to intelligence and wit
part of me just thinks he enjoys mental stimulation and someone who can make him think not only piques his interest in the person but also makes him enjoy and look forward to spending time with them
at the same time, being able to enjoy comfortable silence is important too
and wit. he’d definitely tease someone he has a crush on though and i’ll tell you why

it takes him a bit to figure out why exactly he likes seeing their smile or spending time with them, or why he cares so much
a certain subtle air of confidence

Tendou
simply put, it wouldn’t be any average person
there would be something about the person that initially caught his eye, something unique that makes them stand out just a little
examples of this could be: a sharp tongue, a book or manga they always have on their desk, a keychain, dyed hair, wearing headphones all the time (he wonders what they’re listening to)
these would be things that make him interested and start paying attention to the person, eventually even striking up a conversation
in terms of personality, I think he’d enjoy someone with a sense of humor. obviously we know he can get along with most people regardless of that (ushijima) even if not everyone understands him, but someone that isn’t thrown off by his dramatic personality and responds in kind would definitely excites him
he likes to chatter, so a good listener and/or someone that’s a good conversationalist would be great tbh
and i’ll just say it, if this person is a manga/anime fan, or just knowledgeable on pop culture in general immediate bonus points. shared passions are great
an acknowledging smile or greeting, especially before they’re acquainted, actually goes a long way bc he has a history of being shunned and mocked by his peers. just that simple kindness which is unfortunate that not treating someone like that would be seen as kind is really important to him before he realizes it
a huge thing i think for him is feeling comfortable being himself around them. that itself allows him to be more open with his emotions and actually develop a crush
so going back to humor and a teasing relationship, it would need to be the type that doesn’t insult things like looks or anything like that. he has a history of insecurity that is still probably present, even if he’s mostly dealt with it, but again, being comfortable is huge. tasteful and dumbass humor only
someone who’s not afraid to say what’s on their mind. he appreciates that kind of directness, and finds it entertaining to an extent
there’s also a certain unpredictability and spontaneity with this person that keeps him on his toes and excites him. he loves a challenge
he’d love someone who shamelessly compliments him. truthfully it’s a bit of an ego thing, but in a specific way:
for Tendou, volleyball is his safe haven. that’s where he grew his confidence and skill and made his friends, so it feels nice for him to have someone appreciate the things he’s good at and cares about when he’s worked so hard for it
and he loves looking and feeling cool, and being showered in compliments is a great confidence booster heyhey seratonin
he’d love to make them laugh
if they compliment something like his looks, humor, passion, etc that will always really touch his heart. he’d brush it off with an “i know right~?” but in reality he’s freaking out because those are important parts of his self that have really been ignored or unrecognized by most people
this person would become another safe haven where he feels accepted and confident, and genuinely enjoys being around <3

Iwaizumi
the first thing i thought of for Iwa is someone authentic
a person who is true to themselves and the people around them
he despises fake people. those types were usually the ones always confessing to Oikawa or improving themselves for him. he just thinks it’s wrong
a nice laugh. i don’t mean pretty and refined necessarily, but one that is genuine and contagious and unforced
maybe it is a naturally pretty or refined laugh, but what matters is that it’s a laugh that is theirs, not for anyone else. that’s what’s attractive to him and makes his heart speed up when he hears it
a person who is thoughtful, considerate, and compassionate. like Tsukishima, he appreciates the quiet type of kindness
but he finds it amusing when they get just a little flustered when another person points it out
another little thing, but he’d probably find someone who’s a bad flirter absolutely adorable
he’d appreciate someone emotionally intelligent and perceptive
this is a person that is usually aware of how others are feeling and is able to adjust themselves to be the most effective in that situation
for example, they can adjust their own behavior to make someone feeling nervous at ease or defuse an angry person getting out of hand
this means their advice and comments are taken much better
tbh i could see him liking someone both reserved or incredibly expressive
so they could be the type that’s an extroverted hard-to-hate ball of sunshine, or a calm individual who’s respected and whose presence is appreciated by everyone
either way, he’d notice it
this is really the exception to the ‘disliking fake people’ thing
and he’s a hot-headed, tough-love kind of guy. his caring nature is often hidden behind that behavior
so he’d admire that kind of social ability and understanding
another thing that i immediately thought of for what he’s attracted to: passion and ambition
what their passion is is less important than the fire in their eyes when the topic comes up, or they talk about their aspirations and huge, sometimes unattainable goals
this doesn’t mean they have their life figured out, but they care both about the future and living in the moment
this is just a hunch, but he’d probably be more inclined to like an athlete or someone that takes care of their body and physical conditioning
someone who challenges him to be better. someone who understands what it means to be proud and understanding your own imperfections at the same time
a vocal supporter
whether it’s yelling his name from the stands when he makes a spike, or encouraging him to follow his passions after high school, or bragging about him to their friends, having someone unapologetically express their belief in him just makes his heart soar
but really, he likes someone who can cheer him on and tell it like it is when he needs it. he’s a pretty tough cookie so he doesn’t mind bluntness (actually prefers it)
i see him liking someone who can surprise him too
the kind of person to hit him up at midnight to go for a drive under the stars or have a dance party in the park to music from a bluetooth speaker
a passionate, authentic, and level-headed adventurer

Kenma
i’ve written so much Kenma recently lots of these traits are probably obvious lmao
first things first, he just needs to be able to vibe with them
it sounds obvious, but it’s really important. just being able to exist and not feel pressure to be someone he’s not is huge
another boy who loves comfortable silence, or someone who can talk and not mind him being minimally responsive sometimes because he is listening he’s just quiet
he’s an actions>words type of person though
so if they ask about his passions and actually show interest in him that’s great, and he notices, but following through is even better
examples: remembering his favorite flavors, engaging in conversation about the game he’s playing then the next day asking if he beat that level he was stuck on, asking how the tournament went when he mentioned how tired he was from consecutive preparatory practices the week before
things that show they do pay attention, and they do care
someone who looks out for him
this comes in many forms: bringing him a drink and snack bc you know he’s been up all night binging a new game and is probably dehydrated and hungry, or gently guiding him by the arm when he’s got his nose in his game and would definitely walk into traffic, or taking over in a conversation when they recognize he’s just hit his social quota
again, actions>words
along with this interest in him, trying to playfully get him to smile or get a reaction out of him would be annoying at first, but eventually would get him more and more flustered
sound contradictory to what i said before about him needing to feel not pressured? it is a little bit. he doesn’t get it either
really it’s the fact that this person wants to show the way he already feels
okay like Tendou, i feel like i have to say that if they play games or at least are knowledgeable about them, or even want to learn about them, it’s immediate bonus points
it’s one of his two loves. they don’t even have to be good at games as long as they can engage or listen to his rant about the history of a series or how the game mechanics differ between two different platformers and why one may be considered smoother gameplay, but it’s actually more restrictive--
you get it
someone who just casually checks in. “how are you doing?” then moves on and doesn’t make a big deal, but will listen if he needs to vent
like Iwa, he likes someone who’s straightforward and genuine
and like Tendou, there’s something about them that is unique that he latches onto
needs someone “interesting” that always brings some new experience
like Tsukki, he likes mental stimulation why do i keep using the others as examples lmao
they need to have a sense of humor. may surprise you, but he is bffs with Kuroo, and someone witty is someone who’s interesting
he’s always got a lot on his mind, he’s always thinking
they’d need to be someone he feels comfortable conversing with and sharing his thoughts with, and is a good and responsive listener
some sort of intellectual capability
when he gets to the point where he actually seeks out their company, he starts to realize his feelings
and when he does, he’ll feel more nervous initiating interaction (afraid he’ll say or do something wrong)
they need to be someone who will take the initiative and seek him out too, and that would only intensify his crush

Guess who caved and read all 66 chapters of Painter of the Night? I don’t normally like to read comics that are still ongoing because I don’t like losing momentum while waiting for updates but here I am 🤡🤡
Spoilers.
I typed this while distracted so sorry for any muddled thoughts.
Story
I am glad that I read up to Chapter 66 because a huge misunderstanding was cleared up (the fact that Nakyum legitimately did not run away this time). I would’ve been pulling my hair out if the misunderstanding went on further (I HATE misunderstanding/miscommunication as a plot device).
A lot of people on the subreddit theorized that this was a huge turning point in the story. For the first time, we’re seeing Seungho show legitimate remorse and sadness over Nakyum’s suffering. Hopefully we’re going to see change his behaviour and act more reasonably towards Nakyum, and be more communicative about why he’s doing what he’s doing.
Though I think Nakyum is still a bit confused about his feelings for Seungho, he’s past the point of hating Seungho and wanting to leave. He said that he’d tried to run away before but he had nowhere to run to. He acknowledges that Seungho is a constant in his life, a protector and an indirect caregiver. But he’s still struggling with his feelings for Seungho.
In that way, Seungho and Nakyum are sort of opposite. Seungho recognized his romantic love for Nakyum first, but he couldn’t see how he was hurting him. As for Nakyum, he figured out how he could make Seungho happy early on, but he’s still struggling a bit with regards to how he feels about Seungho, likely because a part of his heart is still with Inhun. Again, he definitely recognizes Seungho as his protector (he’d instinctively called out to Seungho for help when he was kidnapped), but he’s still struggling over whether he’s in love with him.
This week we’re getting a continuation to the spinoff story so we won’t see the story pick up again until next week.
I do think the spinoff story is interesting. Currently, Seungho holds a lot of power over Nakyum, both in terms of political/administrative power, and physical power. But with Seungho as a peasant and Nakyum as a son of a noble family, Nakyum holds the social power over Seungho and it evens up their power dynamics a bit, which I do like. It feels safer for Nakyum lmao.
In terms of the style of story telling, it’s mostly angst, I’ll be honest. And it is rather melodramatic because miscommunication tends to be something the author uses quite a bit as a storytelling technique. Luckily, they’re not dragged out for too long.
Art
The art is pretty nice. It’s all in full colour, which surprised me. The art is extremely detailed. I wonder how the artist can do so much in a week lol. I hope they’re not overworked.
Seungho
Both Seungho and Nakyum have had their share of past trauma, but my thinking is that they’ve manifested in different ways.
It’s implied that Seungho’s father knew about his sexuality from a young age and tried to treat it through medical means and then by locking him up, which effectively stopped his education, despite him having been a bright student. Seungho then lived out his young adult days in debauchery. Early on, he implied that he was just living by his father’s principles, or something along those lines. My guess is that his dad left him behind so he could debauch in isolation without affecting the rest of the family.
So Seungho grew up without many close friends. He was surrounded by servants and yes men (like Jihwa) who would not call him out on his bullshit. So I think that’s how he developed his extremely bossy and abusive behaviour.
Why Nakyum was different for Seungho was that initially, he didn’t have power over Nakyum. He would tell him to do things, but Nakyum would not necessarily heed his commands, not painting, or trying to run away. His heart was still fully loyal to Inhun. So I think that was why Nakyum elicited extra violent behaviour from Seungho. Seungho had never been defied like this.
But I think Seungho was also intrigued by Nakyum. Nakyum was a contradiction because he drew smut but was always super embarrassed when faced with sexual situations irl. Seungho should've felt better when Inhun was sent away and Nakyum became submissive during sex and yet that’s when Seungho felt like something was wrong. Nakyum just kept eliciting unexpected emotions from Seungho. I definitely think Seungho saw him as a plaything at first, but came to care for him after he got to know more about him and his personal life.
Nakyum
Nakyum also came from a tough background. He was an orphan, and was raised along kisaeng ladies. Inhun was the first authority figure whom he’d had a positive impression of, and he latched on to him. He admired Inhun so much that he tried his best to listen to him when he told him not to draw erotic art anymore.
Inhun unfortunately didn’t see their relationship the same way. He showed a kind face to most of his students but he looked down on their lowly statuses. Only when he saw Nakyum as a pawn, did he give him attention. But he never hid his emotions, visibly expressing his anger when Nakyum wasn’t being a good spy, brushing off Nakyum’s confession of love.
Nakyum’s love for Inhun was so extremely pure and all-consuming. I cried when he was so swiftly rejected and condescended upon by Inhun T_T Because I knew how much courage it took for Nakyum to confess, how he wanted nothing but for Inhun to have good things, and Inhun cared not for any of that because it wasn’t want he wanted. Nakyum wasn’t helping him in the way he needed, and he cared far more for ambition than romantic love (not to mention romantic love from a lowly peasant).
After the rejection, Nakyum internalized Inhun’s words when he called him a prostitute. A part of him still loved Inhun and if he said that, Nakyum figured he must’ve been right. The other part of him decided that acting submissively to Seungho was the only way to survive.
Basically, Nakyum’s going through a huge emotional journey because his hero Inhun has kind of abandoned him (though he hasn’t forgotten him completely), but Nakyum hasn’t found a worthy person to give his heart to.
Seungho & Nakyum
I’m still thinking about their relationship and why we ship them despite the shit they’ve done (mostly the shit that Seungho’s done to Nakyum).
For Seungho, I think Nakyum was the first person he met who had a different way of expressing love. He’d never met someone like Nakyum who would stuff he despised just to help out Inhun. Even when Inhun didn’t show an inkling of appreciation. Perhaps Seungho felt that he didn’t know what love was until he met Nakyum.
As for Nakyum, he theorized that he was only desperate for affection and that was why he felt himself drawn to Seungho. I think that is technically true. But more than that, I think Seungho has arguably shown more levels of care to Nakyum than Inhun has. Yeah, Seungho has done horrendous stuff to Nakyum, but he’s also shown more affection to Nakyum. That includes physical affection, but Seungho also bought him warm clothes, called on a doctor to care for his health, etc. Again, all of the care absolutely does NOT cancel out the abusive behaviour on Seungho’s side, but that’s how I think Nakyum found himself feeling more and more comfortable with Seungho. Loving someone is about showing your bad sides as well as your good sides.
I think both Seungho and Nakyum are finding affection/care in forms that they’d never experienced before, and that’s why they are drawn to each other.
Problematic?
I had a feeling that this would be a story that a lot of people would consider problematic. It’s probably because I’m older now, but it doesn’t really bother me. I obviously know that there is toxic behaviour shown by the characters and I would never want that in real life, but it’s really not difficult for me to separate what works in fiction vs. what works in reality.
This was a different time period, when rich and powerful people could just do whatever they wanted. Not excusing problematic behaviour, just explaining the entitled behaviour of some of the elites.
Seungho for sure shows extremely toxic behaviour. I think the point is that he is a problematic man who has trouble expressing emotions the normal way, and it ends up hurting those around him and those he cares about. He’s definitely an imperfect person who’s unpleasant to be around, but I think one thing the author wanted to show is that bad people are still capable of having emotions. By no means do I excuse his toxic behaviour. But I am all for showing that flawed people are still worthy of attention. We are still interested in what Seungho does in spite of his poor behaviour because we recognize that he is still a person.
I also recognize that Nakyum is woobified a lot. He’s constantly put in situations where he is the victim and he doesn’t/can’t fight back. In the latest event with Jihwa ordering Nakyum’s kidnapping/murder, the Nameless one had threatened Nakyum’s life so that he wouldn’t reveal the fact that he’d kidnapped him, and that caused all of Seungho’s meanness in the past few chapters. I recognize that whump is a popular trope, but usually because it ends in comfort. (I specifically can’t enjoy whump if it doesn’t end in comfort) It sets up a situation in which it feels reasonable for the victim to receive comfort. Again, this is stuff that I only enjoy in fiction. I recognize that in real life, people shouldn’t have to get hurt to be worthy of love and care. But I can see why people may say that Nakyum being the victim might be a problem.
Other
I thought Jihwa & the Nameless one were going to be a side pairing from the moment I saw the Nameless one’s jaw lmao. It was angular and I was like, that’s a handsome man’s jaw. I’m glad that Jihwa realized before hurting Nakyum that he couldn’t possibly fix his relationship with Seungho anymore. He recognized that even with Nakyum out of the picture, Seungho wouldn’t want to come to him. Seungho’s mind would always be filled with Nakyum, and if Seungho had found out that he was behind the murder, he’d hate Jihwa even more. Like Nameless one, despite the despicable things that Jihwa had done, I did pity him. He was in love with Seungho for a long time, and thought that giving him everything he wanted (including letting him have sexual relations with others) would endear himself to Seungho. But they were just not meant to be.
But Min implied that Jihwa had crossed the line already this time by kidnapping Nakyum. After the happenings of Chapter 66, Seungho’s going to have a field day with Jihwa and I’m not sure how he’s going to get out of that one. Not sure if Nameless one can do anything to help.
I don’t know how long this manhwa is supposed to be, but there are several story lines other than Seungho x Nakyum that haven’t been addressed yet. Like I said, I think we’re going to see Jihwa x Nameless one expanded upon a bit. There’s some stuff going on with the Yoon family, since Seungho’s brother keeps coming over. I wonder if Seungho’s going to try starting a career (this isn’t based on anything, I’m just wondering). And I also have a feeling that Inhun might return, which will likely force Nakyum to choose between Inhun or Seungho once and for all.
To be completely honest, I don’t want this manhwa to drag out for too long. For selfish reasons because again I don’t like waiting for ongoing comic chapters. I don’t know how long the manhwa is intended to be, but based on my paragraph above, it’d still take a lot of time for all of those loose ends to be wrapped up. But considering the fact that Seungho and Nakyum’s relationship is probably finally going to get better, hopefully we’re over half way through? Just me being hopeful.
Final
I didn’t write a full review for this on my Dreamwidth because, like, this comic isn’t even done yet. But as you can see, I enjoyed reading it. I feel like I’m missing a hundred things that crossed my mind while reading this. And there are a lot of interesting analysis posts on Tumblr and Reddit that are opening my mind to other interpretations too.
I had a BL manga phase when I was a teenager and now I’m like “...is it time to get back into it?” Lol. In any case, it’s interesting reading BL as an adult now because like I said, it’s so much easier to separate the fiction from the reality now. I can read BL purely as fiction while recognizing what tropes are not healthy, and they don’t diminish the story. It’s melodramatic because it’s exactly that: melodrama.

hi!! so i just started writing fanfics, and i was just wondering -- how do you deal w/ numbers and the whole posting online thing? while i know that i should be writing for fun and stuff (bc it is!) and that im literally JUST starting out, BUT i just.. im someone who really heavily relies on validation, and when people don't really respond to my works well (or at all), i kinda just.. feel bad ): idk.. do u have any tips?
🥺 You came to me for advice on this, anon? 🥺 Thank you so much! I’m more than happy to pass on what I’ve learned and help out a new writer. I’ve been reading/writing fanfics on-and-off in some form or another for like ten years, but especially over the last four and am happy to share some tips. There are five main things that I think can help grow your follower count and the amount of feedback you get:
Don’t feel bad about wanting validation.
Consider the platforms where you post.
Write for active fandoms and popular characters.
Post frequently.
Interact with other authors.
This got rather long so I have more info under the cut about each of these.
1. Don’t feel bad about wanting validation.
There’s this dumb trap that we all fall into as writers that tells us that validation isn’t important and that what matters most is our love of writing. While I enjoy writing, if my stuff got no notes and no feedback then I would definitely have gotten discouraged and quit writing awhile ago. Why would I put all that effort into something if no one seems to appreciate it? There’s nothing bad about wanting people to let you know they like your writing! I get so happy when I see someone left a comment on one of my fics or went crazy in the tags or sent me an ask. And when something doesn’t get any feedback, I get depressed about it and second guess whether I should have bothered writing it. So, definitely try not to get caught up feeling bad because you want people to tell you that they liked your work. 💕
2. Consider the platforms where you post.
I only use AO3 and Tumblr, so I can’t speak to any other platforms, but posting my writing on both of these are widely different experiences. Part of the culture of AO3 is giving kudos and leaving comments, so you’re more likely to get feedback there than anywhere else. I slowly built a following on Tumblr because of my AO3, even when I wasn’t posting anything on Tumblr itself. I would really recommend checking out AO3 if you’re not already on there! You do need to request an invitation, but it only took me a couple of days to receive one. I also have 8 invitations that I haven’t sent out, so DM me if you want one and I can give you one!
I’m sure you’ve already seen posts about this, but the unfortunate thing about writing on Tumblr is that the feedback is absolutely minuscule and I’m not sure why. There’s this awful culture on this platform of people only liking content and not reblogging it to make sure it gets shared with other users. So, you end up really reliant on your own followers and the tagging system for your works to reach people. And the tagging system is a mixed bag. Sometimes your posts don’t show up in the tags or they will but only after a couple of days. If your post gets enough notes then it might go to the top of the search feed but then only for a few days at most.
As a sidenote to readers, this is why reblogging is so important! Even if you only have five followers or don’t leave a comment, just reblogging it means a lot to content creators!
Here are some of the tips I have for the mechanics of Tumblr:
Use the tagging system, as imperfect as it is. I think Tumblr now reads the first 20 tags in your post, so use that to your benefit. I usually always tag at least: [character name]; [character name x reader]; [fandom]; [fandom x reader]. You can always also try things like: [character name genre], [fandom genre], [fandom fanfic], [character fanfic] as well.
Make sure your blog is easy to navigate and have a masterlist that’s easy to find. If a reader sees your content on their dash and decides to check out your other works, if they can’t find them on your blog then they’ll probably just leave.
Self-reblog as much as you feel you need to for your followers who may have missed your post. I self-reblog a lot for new content over the first couple of days and then even will do a few icymi self-reblogs later as well. It also helps to have a list in your profile somewhere of your recent updates so people can easily see if they’ve missed something.
3. Write for active fandoms and for popular characters.
This might seem like common sense, but I think it’s something to keep in mind if you want to grow your follower count and your chances of getting feedback. And there’s nothing wrong with prioritizing a fic over another just because you want more feedback. I actually really want to write something for Chainsaw Man but the fandom is so small compared to the other fandoms I write for that I’m putting it on hold until the anime comes out.
That’s not to discourage you from writing for characters or fandoms that are less popular -- I have a bad habit of writing for niche characters and fandoms. But I always see my activity spike when I write for more popular characters. Another tip is to try and figure out which characters people are thirsting over but where there’s a lack of fics for them. You’ll also find that some characters or fandoms just have louder fans than others. The stuff I’ve written for Gojo has gotten a lot of likes and notes, but not so many comments or much feedback. But the amount of asks and thirsts I’ve gotten for Naoya is wild. This is something you’ll learn over time as you keep writing!
4. Post frequently.
This one is annoying because writers have lives and real-world responsibilities and we can’t just write 24/7. But when you’re trying to build a following, even if you can do a couple of short drabbles a week, you’ll really start to see your follower count and feedback grow. I’m not sure if people tend to like longer or shorter fics more, but overall people are just hungry for content and if you can give it to them on a frequent or at least regular basis then they’re more likely to interact, especially if you’re taking requests.
But don’t prioritize writing and posting content at the cost of your own well-being. As authors we’re all guilty of this at one time or another, but your followers will understand if you have writer’s block or you need to take a step back! Taking care of yourself is more important than getting feedback or interaction. ❤️
5. Interact with other authors.
Building relationships with other authors is a big one, but it’s also probably the hardest because a lot of us (me included!) are just so shy about reaching out! It’s like asking someone on a date or trying to be friends with someone you really admire. I know it’s scary to come off of anon (I still sometimes send asks on anon!), but authors recognize the names we see often in our notes and in our inboxes and we’re all really nice, I promise! 🥰 And I’m much more likely to read the fics of my mutuals and the people I follow than I am to be searching through the tags.
And I think there’s nothing wrong with reaching out to an author you love and politely asking if they’ll read your work. I think it’s totally okay to send something like, “I really love your writing and wanted to know if it’s alright if I share this fic I just posted with you? I’ve seen you thirsting over [character] and think you might like it if you have the time to read it!” The worst they can do is turn you down. I would never be upset over getting an ask like that as long as it was polite and the person was understanding that I might not have time to read their fic. But, I know that this is really scary to ask of someone. I’ve only done it once or twice, so maybe I don’t have any ground to stand on here, but I really think you should try it even if you need to send the ask on anon first.
Please just be mindful of an author’s rules before reaching out.
Another added bonus is that authors are more likely to reblog and give you feedback on the stuff you write because we’re in the exact same boat as you! We’re the perfect audience.
And don’t forget...
Growing your follower count and reaching the level of feedback you want takes time. If you’re just starting out, don’t get discouraged. The more you write, the better you get so even if you’re not getting the feedback you want now, that doesn’t meant that you never will!
And of course, pay it back in kind. Just how you want people to interact with your fics, we want the same. I always try to leave comments on the fics I read on AO3 and always reblog the fics I like on Tumblr and try to go wild in the tags so that the author knows that I loved their works.

Ever since I was a teenager. I have often idolized musicians, and considered them as perfect human beings.
Perfect life. Perfect marriage. Perfect relationships. Perfect children. Perfect house. Perfect everything.
And then as I grew up, reality struck me as usual. It's not as good as I thought.
The artists I have followed - had a significant impact in my life and I have looked up to them quite often. They did not have a perfect life. But strangely enough, that did not diminish my admiration for them.
And that happened between me and Morten Harket.
As I joined the fandom in 2017 , I was exposed to numerous stereotypes and assumptions about the band members. It became more about their personal lives rather than their contribution to music.
What really startled me was general assumptions about Morten. While some of them were accurate, some of them were quite questionable.
Morten was sometimes compared with the other band members with almost every other aspects we aren't supposed to nose around - His social life.
While Magne and Pal were idolized for having a perfect marriage. (Which I'm genuinely happy for ) -- Morten was left behind as he had a divorce and a few break ups. There were also a lot of comments from YouTube and other social media platforms which were filled with comments that were painful for me to read.
He was labled with words such as "womanizer" , "difficult person" and even "unfaithful" which is absolutely not true. In reality -- Guess what? Morten is just as imperfect as we are.
And what really stuns me is the way some people look at him as a less of a human being for just experiencing struggles and unusual hurdles.
I've even noticed how some people drifted away from Morten, the more they began to know him. However, it was the opposite for me. And strangely I don't know why it went that way.
Like Morten said in several interviews pertaining to the attention recieved from his fans - he felt he was being capitalized because of his stunning looks and it has got nothing to do with him personally. He was pressurized to have a perfect image which would support his career. One mistake and it would become a huge scandal back in the 80s.
When he had to end a relationship with Patrice Burke due to undisclosed reasons, things went downhill for him as she revealed uncredited, potentially sensitive information about their relationship. Basically, she committed a breach of privacy and fabricated his narrative on Tabloid media.
Can one possibility imagine the amount of mental pressure a person has to face.. every single fucking day? To be perfect on screen.
He may have enjoyed a certain amount of attention but what really mattered was his mental health . It wasn't given an appropriate amount of attention.
Morten was compelled to bear with it.
The way people perceived his marriage and his future relationships was strangely diverse. Some were sad that the relationships did not last, others began to generalize his character based on that factor - which lead them to say things like " he may be handsome, but he should keep his **** in his place and not wander around" , he's strongly religious and he got divorced? What a hypocrite. He may be a good person to hang out with but he sucks relationships unlike Mags and Pal. "
Comments on the music video of "I'm The One" (featuring a transgender woman dressing up for her day) were also spiralled with comments some of which were frowning on the possibility of him being "bisexual" .
Well, I can only consider that if he comes out as bisexual. Because, his sexual preferences are none of our businesses except for him.
while some appreciated the concept of the video.
According to Morten in one of his interviews "The song is about finding out who you are and that it’s OK to make mistakes in life. A human is a complex being and has to make compromises when interacting with other people. But only if you are honest with yourself and take conscious decisions”
The moment he said that. I began to love him more.
He made me realise how important it is to accept our flaws. We all had imperfect lives, but that shouldn't put us down when me are walking. And if we do have difficulties in doing so - seek help.
There is no shame in acceptance and learning. It is what WE NORMALLY DO. It's the process of becoming a better, wiser person everyday. -- Morten did exactly that.
He had relationship difficulties in the past. He may have divorced. But interestingly, people are in good touch with him , including his former partners and his children. All of them (Morten included) are happy with their respective lives.
In the end, Morten understands himself better than the rest of us.
I think we need to stop assuming things about him, unless we hear it from his mouth. He has been through enough scrutiny from the media in the past and that kinda explains why he's inactive in social media.
Just because he had kids from three women or had failed relationships in comparison to Mags and Pal -- doesn't make him less of a human being. (First of all, let us not compare him with others)
Morten has entered into my life , making me realise the imperfections of life and gave me the confidence to look up to little, beautiful things. He saved my life several times during the pandemic.
I mean, when he sings this line from "Heaven Cast" :-
I'm thankful for the still of night
I'm thankful for the morning light
Thankful you are here, thankful I was there
Thankful that was you and I
These are the words I would want to hear, whenever I feel depressed, anxious and sometimes suicidal.
