The results are widely biased but they've also failed to disprove what I've been thinking about since I've locked my fics in Ao3.
Majority of engagement with readers comes from people who already have an account. Only thing you, as a writer, lose is the hit number if you choose to make your fics no longer available to the public.
Of course, there are exceptions for people with more popular fics or people who have loyal guest followers of their fics -
However, if you're a writer and been wanting to lock your fics but couldn't in the fear of losing engagement - it doesn't seem like you would lose a lot.
curious about something so it's polling time!
If you do not have an account on Ao3 how/where do you read your fics?
#Locked my fics when I first started writing#There were posts of ai scraping works and I didn't want my work to be used like that#I don't know how effective that is but guess it's something#Opened them up cause I was sending them to friends who didn't have Ao3 accounts#Closed them again about a month ago cause I've learned people decide what to read based on hit/kudos ratio#My gut tells me people who do this are not writers themselves and they are the ones who'll read a fic - enjoy it#And very rarely bother with doing the bare minimum of giving kudos#Fuck that#If I could hide my fics from people like that I would#Thankfully the hit/kudos ratio does it for myself#But I also don't owe it to anyone to make them public when engagement with authors is so low#Rather keep my fics (somewhat) safe from scrapers and bot commentators
