Long Covid Justice on COVID and LONG COVID from the mask ban teach-in
COVID/SARS-CoV-2 basics
It is NOT seasonal, like the flu is.
Spreads through air, like smoke.
The 6 feet apart rule is no longer great prevention advice.
Handwashing is a great hygiene practice, but transmission via surfaces is unlikely.
Vaccines do NOT prevent transmission. They reduce symptoms and severity for some.
You can transmit [COVID] while completely asymptomatic. Around half of transmission is as asymptomatic or presymptomatic. Everyone's immune system is different.
Being indoors increases risk of transmission, but you can still get it in crowded outdoor spaces.
What is Long Covid?
Long Covid is a set of health issues after someone has COVID-19
New health issues, ongoing issues, or worsening of previous symptoms and conditions.
It is a biological disease that affects hundreds of millions of people globally. It is a mass disabling condition and crisis.
It can cause significant disability and can be fatal.
Anyone can develop it, and up to 10% of people with COVID will.
Severity of initial infection doesn't correlate to potential to develop Long COVID.
It can be very hard to get a diagnosis and proper treatment or care for Long COVID.
Every time you get COVID infection, you increase your chances of developing Long COVID.
How do we prevent Long COVID? Layers of protection
Masking.
Air filtration.
Ventilation.
Vaccines.
Testing (right now Aug 2024, rapid tests are only about 20% reliable. Try to test two times in 24-48 hours).
Nasal sprays before and after exposure. (little data on these being effective against COVID but some are choosing to use them until more research comes out)
Mouthwashes with CPC (Cetylpyridinium Chloride) before and after exposure. (Must be used for at least 60 seconds)

Note
I would love any advice you have for protecting yourself against covid in a work environment where no one else cares, because I’m in the same boat.
That really, really sucks, friend. As I said, I don't have all the answers, but here's what I've learned over the last few years and what's worked for me and my inner circle so far. Note that much of this advice will be US-centric because that's what I know best.
First, some light reading: This Covid Safety 101 flyer/infographic includes a ton of helpful info, and I've had some success using it as a conversation starter in my workplace. TL;DR: COVID is airborne, it's a SARS virus, its effects can be devastating, and your risk of Long COVID increases with each infection. We should all be taking steps to contract COVID as few times as possible and spread it as little as possible, with or without the support we should be getting from our public health institutions.
As for practical suggestions, many of them unfortunately cost a non-inconsequential amount of money because we live in a capitalist hellscape, but here are some things you can try, roughly ordered from least to most expensive.
Awareness: COVID is airborne!
A lot of folks, including people in the medical field (!!!) seem hesitant to believe/accept that COVID is airborne, even though this has been understood by researchers since fairly early on in the pandemic. Since most lingering "infection prevention" protocols focus on things like handwashing, disinfecting surfaces, and keeping a six foot distance from other people (all good for public health, but not particularly helpful for COVID), you'll need to gauge your own safety and comfort when around others.
As a general rule, if you're close enough to someone that you could smell their vape or cigarette smoke if they were engaging in such an activity, you're probably close enough catch COVID from them. Also, like smoke, COVID can linger in the air for a while after someone leaves a room. Adjust your habits accordingly and keep your mask on as much as possible (see below).
CPC Mouthwash and Nasal Sprays
I haven't had time to do a ton of research on these options, so take my recommendations with a grain of salt, but it sounds like there's some research coming out that suggests certain nasal sprays and mouthwashes containing CPC (Cetylpyridinium Chloride) may help neutralize viruses or block them from entering your body (or, at the very least, they may help reduce your viral load). I've been using Crest Pro-Health Clinical Rinse mouthwash before and after interacting with people for the last few months; I don't know how much of a role it's played in keeping me safe, but it might be helping, and even if it's not, it was cheap and my breath is always minty fresh. Here's some more info about nasal sprays, since I don't know enough about them to make any specific recommendations.
Testing
Keep a few rapid antigen tests on hand, if you can, but know their limits as a diagnostic or preventive measure, especially as new variants continue to evolve. My current understanding is that many new variants won't show up on a home test until day 3-4 of symptoms. What this means for you is:
Testing when you're completely asymptomatic and don't have any known recent exposures is probably not the best use of your resources.
If you have any unusual symptoms that might indicate illness, stay home (or wear a high quality mask, if you must interact with others). A negative test doesn't necessarily mean you're in the clear, and if you're sick, you can transmit COVID for several days before you test positive.
Swabbing your mouth and throat in addition to your nose (in that order, obviously) may increase the sensitivity of home tests.
Any sign of a positive test line counts as a positive! If the test line is very, very faint, that still counts.
If you feel sick, but your first test comes back negative, try again in a few days and keep testing periodically until you feel better and are no longer testing positive.
Vaccines
They're not perfect, and they won't get us out of this mess on their own, but if you have access to vaccines, get them. Any vaccine is better than no vaccine, but FWIW, I personally opted to get Novavax this year, after learning that it was the jab of choice for many COVID safety advocates and researchers. Pros of Novavax, specifically, include lower risk of side effects, possibly more durable immunity, and it's not an mRNA vaccine (great option for the vaccine skeptics in your life). But in the end, get whatever you can get.
Masks
If you're not already wearing an N95 respirator or similar, such as KN95, FFP2, KF94, etc., anytime you're indoors (or outdoors in a crowd), now's the time to start. One-way masking isn't perfect, but it's a lot more effective than no-way masking. As someone with a fairly petite face, I've had a hell of a time finding N95 masks that fit me. Through my many expensive mistakes, I have learned:
Avoid buying masks on Amazon, if at all possible. There are a lot of fakes out there.
If most masks fit you comfortably and you're comfortable wearing masks with headstraps (which tend to have a better seal than earloop masks), the 3M Aura is fantastic.
WellBefore sells masks in a variety of styles, sizes, and colors for affordable-ish prices. If you have a more petite face and have found that blue surgical masks and most N95s are huge on you, try their small or child sized masks.
BreatheTeq makes great masks in 4 sizes, and they sell a sample sizing kit for $7 + shipping to help you avoid wasting money.
Masks with headstraps generally form a better seal than masks with ear loops, but the most effective mask is one that you can/will actually wear semi-comfortably. Don't let perfect be the enemy of good. I've been wearing earloop masks for 3.5 years and have made it through multiple known exposures unscathed.
If you can afford to keep a few extra masks on hand to offer to colleages who have to be in your space, people who are coughing in public, or people who seem to be trying but they're still wearing inadequate surgical or cloth masks, do so. More often than not, people will take and wear them when offered!
Air Filtration
If we lived in a society that believed in public health and safety over profits, we'd have spent the last 3 years improving air filtration in public spaces. Alas, most places did not do this, so your next best options are as follows:
Open windows and prop doors whenever you can! Your goal is to keep fresh air moving through your space and minimize the amount of air that will be "re-breathed" by multiple people.
Build a Corsi-Rosenthal box with furnace filters and a box fan. Pros: Fairly cheap and easy to do; Cons: Boxes are large and can be loud. Some sites also provide instructions and/or sell kits to make smaller, more portable C-R boxes out of desktop computer fans.
Buy a HEPA air purifier (or 2, or 3), or try to get your workplace to shell out for one. While many brands sell small, portable purifiers that are around the size of a lunchbox, I would personally recommend that you buy the largest one you can afford. The smaller ones are probably better than nothing, but you really want a more room-scale solution, if possible. I've had good experiences with Medify Air and Coway air purifiers, but I'm sure there are other great brands out there as well.
If you buy an air purifier, you want one with a HEPA filter and without an ionizer, as ionizers aren't as helpful as the advertising would lead you to believe and they can pose health risks (ozone exposure, etc.).
Measuring Air Quality
If you can afford it, buy an Aranet 4 CO2 monitor. Yes, they're expensive, but I haven't heard of any cheaper products that compare in terms of accuracy or portability. (And they do occasionally go on sale on Amazon.) The Aranet 4 measures the concentration of carbon dioxide in the air around you. This reading is a great proxy for how much COVID might be in the air, and it can help you identify which areas of your home or workplace are the safest, and which ones would benefit the most from fresh air, an air purifier, or other safety measures.

Americans can never unsee the Chinese balloon—that’s the real danger (France Inter) The Chinese spy balloon shot down over the U.S. this week embodies the “Chinese threat” seen by many Americans. The most worrying thing in this case is not the balloon, but what it symbolizes. Shot down on Saturday by an American jet over the Atlantic after it drifted over U.S. territory, the balloon wasn’t a threat in and of itself. It’s a toy compared to the arsenals held by both countries. Still, this almost obsolete balloon has come to symbolize the “Chinese threat” that Americans hear about day and night. Until now, this threat was abstract, distant. It now has a face, in the form of this Moon-like balloon that appeared in the Montana sky, drifting above the state’s nuclear silos. The main effect of this symbolic appearance is to have raised anti-Chinese fever among the American political class, as well as strong, unanimous approval for the White House’s decision to postpone Blinken’s trip to Beijing—even at the risk of allowing an already tense relationship to deteriorate further. The balloon could set off a kind of “butterfly effect” of a small incident that leads to a much more dangerous showdown.
China claims a second balloon (Foreign Policy) Beijing says that the giant balloon that was spotted above Latin America does indeed belong to China, and claimed that it was used for flight tests. China said the balloon had “seriously deviated” from its planned route and that it was over Latin America “by mistake.” China has also expressed outrage that a similar balloon, which was above the United States for much of last week, was shot down by U.S. forces. China has since said it “reserves the right” to deal with “similar situations.”
Ohio Train Derailment (1440) Authorities in Ohio yesterday released toxic chemicals into the air from five tanker cars of a derailed train to prevent an explosion along the border of Ohio and Pennsylvania. The train, which had been carrying hazardous materials, went off the tracks Friday night in East Palestine, Ohio, causing a large chemical fire that has continued to burn. The area’s nearly 5,000 residents were ordered to evacuate Sunday. No injuries have been reported. The five cars were transporting the industrially produced chemical vinyl chloride, which is used to make polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, a hard plastic resin in plastic products. The chemical is associated with an increased risk of liver, brain, and lung cancers, among other diseases. As part of the controlled release of the chemical, a small charge was used to blow a hole in the cars, allowing the chemical to go into a trench and burn off before being released into the air.
$17,000+ (WSJ) The median price to put an infant in daycare for a year in a major U.S. metro area. Care costs can be nearly a fifth of median family income in high-cost, large cities, the Labor Department found. In less-populated counties, the median annual price is $8,000 a year.
Chile battles deadliest wildfires on record as heatwave grips (Reuters) Chilean firefighters were battling to hold back forest fires on Monday as authorities said hot and dry weather would continue this week, potentially exacerbating what are already the deadliest blazes in the country’s recent history. The fires, which have consumed 270,000 hectares (667,000 acres) of land, have killed 26 people so far in south-central Chile, and already made 2023 the second worst year in terms of hectares burned after the so-called “fire storm” that hit the country in 2017. The state National Forestry Corporation reported that as of Monday morning there were 275 active fires, of which 69 were currently in combat. Chile is in the grip of an over decade-long period of dry weather, which the World Meteorological Organization called a “mega drought” last year, adding it was the longest in a thousand years and marked a major water crisis. The heat wave and strong winds have caused a rapid spread of the flames during the Southern Hemisphere summer season.
French protesters hold more strikes over pension changes (AP) Public transportation, schools and electricity, oil and gas supplies were disrupted on Tuesday in France as demonstrators were taking to the streets for a third round of nationwide strikes and protests against the government’s pension reform plans. Last week, an estimated 1.27 million people demonstrated, according to authorities, more than in the first big protest day on Jan. 19. More demonstrations, called by France’s eight main unions, were planned for Saturday. Rail operator SNCF said train traffic was severely disrupted Tuesday across the country, including on its high-speed network. International lines to Britain and Switzerland were affected. The Paris metro was also disrupted.
Outnumbered and Worn Out, Ukrainians in East Brace for Russian Assault (NYT) In a tiny village in eastern Ukraine at the epicenter of the next phase of the war, Lyudmila Degtyaryova measures the Russian advance by listening to the boom of incoming artillery shells. There are more and more of them now. And they are coming more frequently, as Russian troops grind their way forward. Russia’s military is preparing to launch a new offensive that could soon swallow Ms. Degtyaryova’s village of Nevske, and perhaps much more in the eastern Ukrainian region known as the Donbas. But already the impact of Russia’s stepped-up assault is being felt in the towns and villages along the hundreds of miles of undulating eastern front. Exhausted Ukrainian troops complain they are already outnumbered and outgunned, even before Russia has committed the bulk of its roughly 200,000 newly mobilized soldiers. And doctors at hospitals speak of mounting losses as they struggle to care for fighters with gruesome injuries. Two weeks ago, a Russian shell landed in Ms. Degtyaryova’s yard, and as she contemplated her future over the weekend, the remains of her barn still smoldered.
Turkey, Syria quake deaths pass 9,500 (Reuters/AP) Overwhelmed rescuers struggled to save people trapped under the rubble as the death toll from a devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria rose past 9,500 on Wednesday, making the quake the deadliest in more than a decade. Turkish authorities say some 13.5 million people were affected in an area spanning roughly 450 km from Adana in the west to Diyarbakir in the east, and 300 km from Malatya in the north to Hatay in the south. In Syria, authorities have reported deaths as far south as Hama, some 100 km from the epicentre.
Race to find survivors as quake aid pours into Turkey, Syria (AP) Search teams and aid from nearly 30 countries poured into Turkey and Syria on Tuesday as rescuers working in freezing temperatures and sometimes using their bare hands dug through the remains of buildings flattened by a powerful earthquake. But with the damage spread over a wide area, the massive relief operation often struggled to reach devastated towns, and voices that had been crying out from the rubble fell silent. “We could hear their voices, they were calling for help,” said Ali Silo, whose two relatives could not be saved in the Turkish town of Nurdagi. Unstable piles of metal and concrete made the search efforts perilous, while freezing temperatures made them ever more urgent, as worries grew about how long trapped survivors could last in the cold. Snow swirled around rescuers in Turkey’s Malatya province. More than 8,000 people have been pulled from the debris in Turkey alone, and some 380,000 have taken refuge in government shelters or hotels, said Turkish Vice President Fuat Oktay.
Earthquake Strikes Syrian Region Already Mired in Humanitarian Crisis (NYT) Once again, Syrians heard the roar and thud of buildings coming down, once again saw dust rising from the mounds of gray, jagged concrete and twisted metal where houses and offices had stood. Once again, people dug in the ruins with their hands, hoping, often in vain, to save the people they loved. Across northwestern Syria on Monday, apartment blocks, shops, even entire neighborhoods were wiped out in seconds by a powerful earthquake, in scenes that were all too familiar to a region devastated by more than a decade of civil war. Millions of people displaced by the years of fighting have fled to the north. They sheltered in tents, ancient ruins and any other place they could find after their former homes were destroyed. The economic collapse the war brought on had made it impossible for many of them to get a decent meal. This winter’s fuel crisis had them shivering in their beds, without heat. Syria’s wrecked infrastructure had caused thousands to fall sick with cholera in recent months; the ruin of its hospitals meant many could get no health care. Then came Monday’s earthquake. “Anywhere else in the world this would be an emergency,” a spokesman for the International Rescue Committee said. “What we have in Syria is an emergency within an emergency.”
Putting That Shiny New Law Into Use (NYT) On Monday, the trials for 47 Hong Kong pro-democracy leaders began. The group of activists, lawmakers, and academics had all planned to run for Hong Kong’s local legislature in 2020, just one year after the city was disrupted by mass protests calling for freedom from China. All are expected to face prison sentences ranging from three years to life behind bars. “The trial of the 47 represents a turning point in the crackdown because it reveals the true purpose of the national security law,” said one Hong Kong expert. “They’re not targeting a small minority of people throwing petrol bombs. Those people have already been arrested. Instead, they’re targeting the legitimate opposition, people who believed there was still a little bit left to defend Hong Kong’s autonomy and freedom.”
U.S. firms in Taiwan making ‘contingency’ plans amid China tensions (Reuters) Almost half of companies surveyed by the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Taiwan are revising or plan to revise their business continuity plans amid tensions with China, while a growing number reported being impacted by those strains. China, which views democratically-governed Taiwan as its own territory, has been stepping up military drills across the Taiwan Strait since then-U.S. House Speaker Nancy Pelosi visited Taipei in August. In a survey released on Tuesday, which took place between Nov. 15 and Dec. 16, AmCham Taiwan said 33% of respondents said their operations had been “significantly disrupted” by the increase in tensions. While what it termed “personal anxiety” about increased military activity or tensions remained flat between August and December, 47% of companies said they either have revised or plan to revise business continuity plans “to address the new geopolitical climate.”
South Koreans wonder: Will the U.S. still protect us from North Korea? (Washington Post) The mood around Unification Village, just south of the inter-Korean border, has grown tense the past two years as North Korea ramps up its ballistic missile tests. Most recently, North Korean drones even infiltrated the border. “It is time we went nuclear,” said Lee Wan-bae, who has lived for 50 years in the village, just three miles south of the Military Demarcation Line that marks the official border between the two Koreas. For decades, Lee has had a front-row view of the fluctuating border tensions amid failed efforts to disarm North Korea. “It increasingly looks like matching the nuclear threat from North Korea is the solution that will bring long-desired stability to our village life,” Lee said. With North Korea threatening to strike the South with nuclear weapons and no sign of a return to denuclearization talks, South Koreans are increasingly debating whether they can still trust the United States to protect them in case of war on the peninsula. The South Korean public has become ever more supportive of having their own nuclear weapons, a sentiment that was once considered fringe but is now mainstream.

Detecting Microplastic Contamination with Nile Red
Tumblr media
Abstract
This study delves into the evaluation of fluorescent lights staining microscopy and its efficiency in cross validation by comparison with light microscopy. Rapid detection of microplastics of various sizes can be distinguished in assessing coastal marine sediment. A development of a novel approach in rapid detection is employed for analysis of coastal marine sediment microplastic contamination, based on fluorescent tagging using Nile Red (NR), separated by density-based extraction using Zinc Chloride (ZnCl2) and filtration. The fluorescent staining tags onto microplastic to fluorescent, aides with excitation of blue light and color filters. Fluorescence excitation is detected using simple smartphone photography through a polarizer filter. Rapid detection using light microscopy allows fluorescent particles to be identified and counted in image-analysis. The study used a paired sample t-test to compare particle counts across five mesh sizes, revealing minimal too little to no significant differences between fluoresced and suspected MPs particles, indicating a novel detection process with greater selectivity and fluorescence intensity.

Introduction
The Philippines is an archipelagic country which consists of 7,641 islands and has an extensive and diverse coastline. It boasts as one of the longest coastlines in the world with a measure of approximately 36,000 kilometers (22,370 miles). This coastline encompasses a wide variety of features ranging from pristine beaches to rugged cliffs and rocky shores. These coastal areas play a crucial role in the country's culture, economy, and ecology as they provide habitat to numerous fish species, marine life, and migratory birds. It also serves as hubs for trade, tourism, and agriculture. However, with high level of tourism and recreational activities in the area such as fishing, swimming, sailing, and snorkeling may lead to have larger amount of plastic waste that can pollute and contaminate the marine environment (Chaisanguansuk et al., 2023)
Plastics and other synthetic, non-biodegradable pollutants, which are often referred to as “marine debris,” have been contaminating and polluting the world’s enclosed seas, coastal waters, and the wider open oceans for the past five or six decades (Gregory, 2009). The hazard posed by plastic waste is significant because it starves and suffocates wildlife, distributes invasive and possibly dangerous species, absorbs toxic chemicals, and breaks down into microplastics that can be ingested (Barnes et al., 2009). These microscopic particles, also known as microplastic which are smaller than 5 mm in size, are present in many different environments. It poses a threat to the ecosystem due to their small size (millimeters or less), it is accessible to a variety of organisms with the ability to cause both physical and toxicological harm (Law and Thompson, 2014). Microplastics can be swallowed by low-trophic feeders, filters, and deposits, as well as by detritivores and plankton-eating organisms. As a result, they can build up inside organisms and cause physical damage, like internal abrasions or blockages. Aside from the physical damage, microplastics can also leach into the environment, where they can cause cancer or endocrine disruption (Wright, 2013).
Even though microplastic contamination affects biota, the environment, and public health significantly, it is a difficult problem to solve since it is so pervasive, and the specific adverse consequences of both long-term and short-term exposure are unknown (Savuca, 2022). Because of the growing worries about the amount of marine plastic waste and the effects it has had on marine ecosystems, marine plastic debris pollution has been identified as a global concern (Mu et al., 2019).
This study serves as baseline studies in microplastic contamination in the coastal environment in sediments of Anda, Northwestern Pangasinan. This study generally aimed to identify the presence of microplastic contamination along the coastlines in sediments of Anda, Northwestern Pangasinan. Specifically, it aimed to detect microplastic contamination using Nile Red fluorescence along the coastlines in sediments of Anda, Northwestern Pangasinan and to assess the efficacy of Nile Red fluorescence in staining for rapid detection of microplastics along the coastline of Anda, Northwestern Pangasinan.

The Impact of Abu Dhabi’s Climate on Concrete Testing: What Labs Focus On
Introduction
Abu Dhabi’s impressive skyline, characterized by its towering skyscrapers and modern architectural marvels, is a testament to the city’s rapid growth and development. However, constructing such high-rise buildings in an arid climate presents unique challenges. One crucial aspect of ensuring the structural integrity and longevity of concrete used in these projects is concrete testing. Concrete testing labs in Abu Dhabi must account for the city’s extreme climate conditions to ensure that the concrete used meets the highest standards of durability and performance. This blog explores how Abu Dhabi’s climate impacts concrete testing and what labs focus on to ensure the quality of construction materials.
Abu Dhabi’s Climate and Its Challenges
Abu Dhabi is known for its harsh climatic conditions, which include:
High Temperatures: Summers in Abu Dhabi can see temperatures soar above 45°C (113°F), with extreme heat persisting for extended periods.
Low Humidity: The city experiences low humidity levels, which can contribute to rapid evaporation of moisture from fresh concrete.
Dust and Sand: Frequent dust storms and sand can affect the quality of concrete if not properly managed.
Salt Exposure: Being a coastal city, Abu Dhabi’s air contains salt particles that can affect concrete durability over time.
These climatic factors can significantly influence the performance of concrete, making it essential for concrete testing lab to implement specialized testing protocols and procedures to address these challenges.
Key Areas of Focus for Concrete Testing Labs in Abu Dhabi
Concrete testing labs in Abu Dhabi focus on several critical aspects to ensure that concrete can withstand the city’s climatic conditions. Here’s a deep dive into the key areas of focus:
Temperature Control and Its Impact
Overview: High temperatures can accelerate the curing process of concrete, potentially leading to issues such as insufficient hydration and increased risk of cracking.
Testing Focus: Labs monitor the temperature of both the ambient environment and the concrete mix. They often use temperature-controlled curing chambers to simulate and control curing conditions. Tests such as the setting time of concrete (ASTM C403) are crucial to ensure proper hydration and strength development.
Moisture Loss and Evaporation
Overview: Rapid evaporation of moisture from fresh concrete in hot and dry conditions can lead to surface defects and reduced strength.
Testing Focus: Labs evaluate moisture loss through tests that measure evaporation rates and assess the effects of different curing methods. They also advise on the use of curing compounds and techniques to minimize moisture loss and ensure proper curing.
Durability Against Environmental Exposure
Overview: Concrete exposed to harsh environmental conditions, such as high temperatures and salt exposure, must be durable to resist degradation.
Testing Focus: Labs conduct durability tests to evaluate concrete’s resistance to factors such as chloride ion penetration (ASTM C1202) and sulfate attack (ASTM C1012). They also assess concrete’s ability to withstand freeze-thaw cycles if applicable.
Quality of Aggregates and Mix Design
Overview: The quality of aggregates and the mix design can influence the concrete’s performance under extreme conditions.
Testing Focus: Labs test the properties of aggregates, such as their size, shape, and moisture content, to ensure they are suitable for use in concrete. They also evaluate the mix design to optimize the ratio of cement, water, and aggregates, taking into account the local climate.
Crack Assessment and Prevention
Overview: High temperatures and rapid drying can increase the risk of surface cracking in concrete.
Testing Focus: Labs conduct tests to assess the potential for cracking and implement measures to prevent it, such as using additives or adjusting the mix design. They also evaluate concrete samples for surface and internal cracking after curing.
Chemical Resistance
Overview: Concrete exposed to salty air or other aggressive chemicals requires enhanced chemical resistance to avoid deterioration.
Testing Focus: Labs perform chemical analysis to determine the concrete’s resistance to chemical attacks. Tests such as sulfate resistance (ASTM C1012) and chloride ion content (ASTM C1152) are essential to ensure long-term durability.
Best Practices for Concrete Testing in Abu Dhabi
To address the challenges posed by Abu Dhabi’s climate effectively, concrete testing labs and construction teams should follow these best practices:
Implementing Effective Curing Methods
Overview: Proper curing is essential to achieving the desired strength and durability of concrete.
Best Practices: Use curing compounds, wet coverings, or curing blankets to retain moisture and control temperature. Labs should provide guidelines on the most effective curing methods for specific conditions.
Monitoring and Controlling Temperature
Overview: Controlling the temperature of the concrete mix and environment is crucial for preventing premature setting and ensuring proper curing.

A Moonshot for Obesity: New Molecules, Inspired by Space Shuttles, Advance Lipid Nanoparticle Delivery for Weight Control - Technology Org
New Post has been published on https://thedigitalinsider.com/a-moonshot-for-obesity-new-molecules-inspired-by-space-shuttles-advance-lipid-nanoparticle-delivery-for-weight-control-technology-org/
A Moonshot for Obesity: New Molecules, Inspired by Space Shuttles, Advance Lipid Nanoparticle Delivery for Weight Control - Technology Org
Inspired by the design of space shuttles, Penn Engineering researchers have invented a new way to synthesize a key component of lipid nanoparticles (LNPs), the revolutionary delivery vehicle for mRNA treatments including the Pfizer-BioNTech and Moderna COVID-19 vaccines, simplifying the manufacture of LNPs while boosting their efficacy at delivering mRNA to cells for medicinal purposes.
Like space shuttles using booster rockets to breach the atmosphere, lipid nanoparticles (LNPs) equipped with the new molecule more successfully deliver medicinal payloads. Image credit: Max Pixel, CC0 Public Domain
In a paper in Nature Communications, Michael J. Mitchell, Associate Professor in the Department of Bioengineering, describes a new way to synthesize ionizable lipidoids, key chemical components of LNPs that help protect and deliver medicinal payloads. For this paper, Mitchell and his co-authors tested delivery of an mRNA drug for treating obesity and gene-editing tools for treating genetic disease.
Previous experiments have shown that lipidoids with branched tails perform better at delivering mRNA to cells, but the methods for creating these molecules are time- and cost-intensive. “We offer a novel construction strategy for rapid and cost-efficient synthesis of these lipidoids,” says Xuexiang Han, a postdoctoral student in the Mitchell Lab and the paper’s co-first author.
The method involves combining three chemicals: an amine “head”, two alkyl epoxide “tails” and, finally, two acyl chloride “branched tails.” The completed lipidoid’s resemblance to a space shuttle strapped to two booster rockets is not coincidental: in college, recalls Han, a documentary about the space shuttle left him impressed with the design of solid rocket boosters that enabled the shuttle to enter orbit. “I figured that we could append two branch tails as ‘boosters’ into the lipidoid to promote the delivery of mRNA,” says Han.
Indeed, the addition of the branched tails led to a striking increase in the ability of LNPs equipped with the new lipidoid to deliver mRNA to target cells, much like a rocket whose boosters allow it to penetrate the atmosphere more easily. “We saw a dramatic increase of a hormone that regulates metabolism to target cells after delivering mRNA using these lipidoids, which is really exciting when you consider it as a way to treat obesity,” says Mitchell.

Top 5 Ice Melt Finds At Home Depot
Tumblr media
The winter season is notorious for its icy driveways and snow-clad pathways. While there are numerous ways to combat this seasonal nuisance, using ice melts is among the most effective. If you've found yourself trudging through the aisles of Home Depot looking for the perfect solution, you're in luck. We've compiled a list of the top 5 ice melt Home Depot offers. Additionally, we'll touch upon the wide array of snow salt Home Depot stocks to ensure you're well-prepared for any snowstorm this winter. 1. Safe Thaw: The Environmentally Conscious Choice Starting off our list is none other than Safe Thaw. Not only is it a leading choice among homeowners, but its reputation as a chemical and toxin-free, industrial-use ice melt is unmatched. Its granular composition ensures even and effective melting without the harm often associated with traditional ice melts. With Safe Thaw, you not only protect your driveways and pathways but also contribute to a greener environment. A genuine win-win! 2. Rock Salt: The Time-Tested Classic Rock salt is a staple when it comes to melting ice. Easily available at snow salt Home Depot sections, this ice melt solution is well-known for its affordability and efficiency. While it's effective in breaking down ice, it's essential to note that it can be harsh on vegetation and certain surfaces. Hence, moderation is key. 3. Calcium Chloride Pellets: Quick And Potent If you're seeking an ice melt that acts quickly, calcium chloride pellets should be on your radar. Often considered one of the fastest ice melt products at Home Depot, it's effective even in extremely cold temperatures. This power does come at a cost—calcium chloride can be tough on plants and specific surfaces if overused. 4. Potassium Chloride: Gentle And Plant-Friendly For homeowners who are environmentally conscious and want to ensure their garden plants remain unaffected, potassium chloride is an excellent pick. Though it might not work as quickly as calcium chloride, its gentleness on the environment and surfaces makes it a favorite among many. 5. Magnesium Chloride: Effective And Less Corrosive Last but not least on our ice melt Home Depot list is magnesium chloride. A balanced option, it offers rapid ice melting capabilities while being relatively less corrosive than calcium chloride. It's also gentler on plants, making it a preferable choice for many homeowners. Navigating The Ice Melt Maze With such a variety of options available at Home Depot, it can be overwhelming to decide which product best suits your needs. Here are a few things to keep in mind: - Surface Type: Always check if the ice melt product is suitable for the kind of surface you intend to use it on. Some ice melts can damage specific materials. - Environmental Impact: As we've seen, some products can harm plants and the environment. If you're environmentally conscious, lean towards eco-friendly options like Safe Thaw or potassium chloride. - Temperature Range: Not all ice melts are effective in extreme cold. Check the product label for its effective temperature range. - Pets and Children: If you have pets or children that often play outdoors, consider an ice melt that is safe for them. Products like Safe Thaw are formulated to be non-toxic. Final Thoughts With winter around the corner, now is the time to stock up on essentials. Whether you're browsing the ice melt Home Depot aisles or searching for snow salt Home Depot offers, remember to pick a product that aligns with your specific needs and values. And as always, for an environmentally friendly, effective, and safe option, Safe Thaw remains a top recommendation. Stay safe and keep those pathways clear this winter! Read the full article
