#643 Pujara’s FIGHTING century and Ashwin special helped India gain marginal advantage in first test against Australia; Yasir became fastest player to grab 200 wickets in test history but it was not enough as Williamson played like a champion to give NZ their first series win away from home against Pakistan in 49 years; Gautam Gambhir unbeaten at 92 in his final first class match; Arsenal have a mixed week as they beat SPurs but just managed a draw against ManU; Liverpool win but Wolves shock Chelsea and more...:-)
Sunil Gavaskar always iterates that first session of the series and test should be a session where batsmen respect bowlers. They didn’t in SA, ENG and same followed in Australia. India chose to bat after winning the toss which is a rarity in Kohli’s captaincy career. Adelaide pitch had a bit of grass on bit. There was not much lateral movement post new ball of 15 overs. But India lost 3 wickets inside 3 overs to fancy drives outside off stump. This included that of Kohli. Rahul was dismissed in 2nd over itself. Vijay and Kohli followed. India 19-3 in 11 overs. Rahane tried to hit out but was looking shaky against Lyon. Fever of fishing ball well outside off stump caught him too. Hazelwood dismissed him. It was a horrendous shot. Pujara was watching all along from the other end. He was trying to weather the storm. 2nd and 3rd sessions are best to bat in Adelaide. Rohit gave him company till lunch. India 56-4. Post lunch, Rohit played some exquisite drives. He raced to 37. When it looked like he would finally play a meaningful innings outside India, he got out trying to slog Lyon. India 86-5. Pant came hit a six, a four, played and missed and succumbed to Lyon’s off spinner. India 127-6. Pujara was just at 35. He was almost playing in another pitch with utmost perfection. Tail had to wag along with him and it did. India looked like getting allout for under 170 but a fantastic 62 run stand with sensible Ashwin gave India cushion. Ishant and Shami supported Pujara too. In the process he scored his 16th test century. He reached 99 from 89 with a six and a four. He crossed 5000 runs when he hit that six. He has taken 3k, 4k and 5k runs in 67 , 84 and 108 innings. This is the exact same amount of innings which Dravid took to reach these milestones. What a coincidence!! Pujara got runout for 123 3 overs before close of play. India got allout first over on day 2. India made 250. It looked a decent score but 100 runs away from what could have been a match winning one. India had to fight like tigers in the field and bowl like lions. Ishant started it by castling Finch in first over. Finch also got out playing flashy drive. Bumrah was wayward in first 5 overs as he gave away 24 runs. Khawaja and Harris made most of it. Ishant was bowling a brilliant line. Shami didn’t get much purchase. Australia cautiously reached 45-1. Against the run of play Ashwin dismissed Harris of a half volley. India had a sniff. Marsh has a poor record against Ashwin. He continued to struggle. He was castled first over post lunch by Ashwin. It was a irresponsible shot. Australia 59-3. Australia were playing defensively. Run rate hardly crossed 2 runs. Bumrah was getting his zone too as he bowled 6 maidens in a row. Khawaja was holding Australia innings together. But he edged Ashwin to get out for a 125 ball 28 runs. Australia 87-4. Handscomb and Head then took a bit of aggression with them as they rotated strike more easily. Ashwin bowled nonstop from end between lunch and tea. Australia reached tea at 117-4. Bumrah and Ishant reduced Australia to 127-6 post tea. India were 6 down at 127 as well. Just like Ashwin supported Pujara, Cummins supported Head here. When it looked like they will take Australia past 200 by end of play, Cummins was trapped in front by Bumrah. Australia ended day 2 at 191-7. Head holds the key for Australia to take lead. Starc has 2 fifties against as well including 99 which is highest test score. India have competed admirably on day 2. Any lead would be handy here. Runs are like gold dust on this pitch.
In UAE, NZ won the toss and batted first again. Williamson’s 89 and Watling’s gritty 77 took NZ to 274. Pakistan scorecard was weird. Asad and Azhar Ali scored centuries and had 201 run stand but rest of the partnership just yielded 147 more runs. Pakistan were coasting at 286-3. They could have closed the match and series had they scored 450 plus. They gave NZ a sniff. NZ were reduced to 60-4. Yasir in the process became fastest to grab 200 wickets. He beat a 82 year old record. He has just taken 33 matches to grab 200 wickets. But a sensational 212 run stand between Williamson and Nichols gave NZ great chance of winning series. NZ set Pakistan a target of 280. Nichols and Williamson both scored fantastic centuries. NZ reduced Pakistan to 55-5. Though Babar Azam tried hard with a gritty 51, Pakistan were dismissed for 156. NZ won the match by 123 runs. This is the first time in 49 years that NZ have won series against Pakistan away from home. Till a month back, all teams were struggling to win away from home. England won last month and NZ this month. Is this a trend? Can India make 3 in 3? Pakistan though will travel to SA in a weeks time. Pakistan are good team when they set score but are horrendous while chasing.
In Ranji trophy, return of Karun Nair didn’t help Karnataka as Saurashtra took a 99 run lead. Saurashtra made 316. 7 wickets by D A Jadeja helped them dismiss Karnataka for 217. This is the first match in which Karnataka have conceded lead in this series. Gautam Gambhir was playing his last first clas match before full time retirement. AP made 390. In response, Delhi were placed at 190-1. Gautam was unbtean at 92.
In EPL, Chelsea took lead thanks to goal by Ruben but still lost 1-2 to Wolves. Raul and Jota scored for Wolves. Till 2 weeks back , they had not lost a match in EPL. They have now lost 2 of them. Spurs outclassed Southampton 3-1. Goals by Milner, Firmino and Shaqiri gave Liverpool 3-1 win over Burnley. Match of the week was Arsenal against ManU. Arsenal were full of confidence after thrashing Spurs last weekend. They took the lead with the help of goal by Mustafi in 26th minute. ManU tied 4 minutes later. In 2nd half, own goal by Rojo gave Arsenal lead again but ManU levelled back a minute later thanks to goal by Lingard. This is where Arsenal are not in the same league as City. They should have beaten ManU in current form and have given away. City lead the table with 41 points. Liverpool is 2 points behind. Spurs have 33 points. Chelsea and Arsenal have 31 points each.

RCB, on the other hand, slumped to their second defeat in three games despite skipper Virat Kohli (57 off 30 balls)'s first half-century of this edition. It was 'local boy ' Shreyas Gopal who removed a rampaging Kohli in the 11th over to turn the match decisively in his team's favour. Kohli's pull shot was taken at deep mid-wicket by D'Arcy Short, who timed his jump to perfection. Leg-spinner Gopal, who plays Ranji Trophy for Karnataka, then silenced his 'home crowd' knocking out AB de Villiers, whose poorly executed pull-shot was snapped by Jaydev Unadkat at deep square leg. Washington Sundar (35 off 19 balls) and Mandeep Singh (47 no off 25 balls) added 66 runs for the fifth wicket but they were left with an uphill task as the asking rate kept on mounting. Put into bat, Samson sent the bowlers on a leatherhunt hitting as many as 10 sixes and two fours. Samson scored his half-century off 34 balls, showing one and all why he is so highly rated by India A coach Rahul Dravid. In Jos Buttler (23 off 14), Samson found an able partner as they put on 73 runs in just 37 balls. Umesh Yadav after his 'man of the match' effort against KXIP was completely off colour going for 59 runs in 4 wicketless overs. The last three overs yielded 60 runs for the Royals. #biengraaga For Instant Updates Fallow Us @biengraaga For More Keep Visiting http://www.biengraa.ga

Congratulation to Mayank Agarwal on splendid maiden triple-century. Mayank has achieved this landmark in ongoing Ranji Trophy match between Karnataka vs Maharashtra at Pune. Leading to Karnataka’s bonus-point win and becoming Karnataka’s third first-class triple-centurion, after KL Rahul and Karun Nair. Mayank scored almost half of his team score and remained unbeaten on 304*. Scorecard
For Mayank, the bowler or the pitch are not the challenges. The biggest challenge for him is himself. Once he finds solutions and responds to situations, you know he is in his zone. He has gone through a long journey of self-realization. He has always been a prolific run-getter but he didn’t earn his triple ton overnight. He is a work in progress and the goal this season is consistency. – Rx Murali Mayank’s coach.
Your will to persist and push has brought you this far, you deserve this and more. Congratulations for a marvelous achievement!” – Rxca
