Bollywood has never been subtle, and Chori Chori Chupke Chupke is no exception — but hey, that’s why we love it, right? for a 2001 film, tackling surrogacy was like Bollywood tiptoeing out of its comfort zone. it’s like Pretty Woman & My Fair Lady meets Indian family drama, with the usual over-the-top flair. Preity Zinta steals the show as Madhu, a bar dancer/sex worker who’s way too chaotic in the best way possible. honestly, without her fiery presence, this movie would’ve been a snoozefest. Rani Mukerji’s character Priya, while sweet and all, is a bit too passive for my taste, but she holds her own in the emotional tug-of-war. Salman Khan plays his usual “charming but confused” guy-next-door act—seriously, it’s his comfort zone at this point. the love triangle gets a bit messy, and for a film that had the chance to dive into the real emotions behind surrogacy, it kind of chickens out and slips back into typical Bollywood melodrama. oh, and some of the dialogues? peak early 2000s cheese. you’re either laughing with it or at it. it’s a solid 3/5 stars, with that extra half just for Preity.
