The virus that causes COVID-19 might be becoming resistant to antiviral treatments, new research has warned. But should we be concerned?

The antiviral drugs nirmatrelvir and remdesivir are recommended for use against mild to moderate SARS-CoV-2 infections to reduce the risk of progression to more severe symptoms and hospitalization in high-risk individuals. However, long-term exposure to these treatments can push the virus to evolve new mutations that allow it to evade these medications.

Antiviral resistance is a particular concern in immunocompromised patients, who take longer to clear the infection and therefore require antiviral treatment over a longer period of time. As a result, viruses in immunocompromised, or other high risk patients, have more time to evolve these drug-resistant mutations.

This week, two studies were published on the evolution of drug-resistant strains of SARS-CoV-2, with both research groups finding drug resistant mutations in immunosuppressed patients being treated with either nirmatrelvir or remdesivir. The first group also found that these resistant mutants may also be able to spread between patients, posing a major challenge to disease management and control in the future.

This study, conducted by researchers at Cornell University and the National Institutes of Health (NIH) and published in the journal Nature Communications on September 18, investigated the impact of antiviral treatment on the emergence of resistant SARS-CoV-2 mutations in 15 immunocompromised patients. All patients received remdesivir while three also received nirmatrelvir and four also received monoclonal antibodies.

By sequencing the virus's DNA, the researches found that the majority of patients carried viruses with some sort of protective mutation against these antivirals. By studying these viruses in the lab, the team were able to confirm their reduced sensitivity to both remdesivir and nirmatrelvir treatment. They also demonstrated that these resistant mutants were able to be effectively transmitted between individuals, at least in hamsters. However, this resistance was overcome by combined antiviral treatment.

In the second study, conducted by researchers from Harvard University, Brigham and Women's Hospital, the University of Pittsburgh and Stanford University and published in the journal JAMA Network Open, scientists assessed a cohort of 165 patients with COVID-19 infections between 2021 and 2023. Participants were divided into those who received antiviral treatment and those who did not.

The team found that antiviral-resistant mutations were more likely to appear in patients who had received antivirals compared to those who did not. This was particularly pronounced among those who were immunocompromised and those who received nirmatrelvir compared to remdesivir.

However, most of these mutations were detected at low levels and reverted back to their original form.

"In this cohort study of 156 participants, treatment-emergent nirmatrelvir resistance mutations were commonly detected, especially in individuals who were immunosuppressed," the researchers wrote. "However, these mutations were generally present at low frequencies and were transient in nature."

Thus, they concluded that, at present, these resistant variants were unlikely to spread through the general population. However, they added that we should continue to monitor these mutations and drug usage patterns.

Maharani Bharani Thirunal Lakshmi Bayi CI (1848–1901) was the Senior Rani of Travancore from 1857 till her death in 1901. Her consort was the famous poet and writer, styled the father of Malayalam literature, Sri Kerala Varma Valiya Koil Thampuran.

She died on the 15th of June 1901. As her husband noted in his diary that night,

" My angel, my life, my darling, my all and all, my love, my pride, my idol, my sweetheart- alas! and what not- expired quietly at 8 pm."

Ceritanya dari Bang Wawan (salah satu senior saya di Ikapema Malang) memperkenalkan saya dengan komunitas tabungan akhirat. awalnya cuman sekadar ber oh..oh, lalu ntah kerandoman apa ngobrol sama rani haha padahal kita ngobrol masalah pasangan (gak ngenes sih tapi tetap aja ada heran aja teman-teman udah pada nikah kita masih asyik sendiri, Allah pasti punya rencana yang amat sangat berarti untuk saya dan Rani), lalu saat itu kami sampai pada kesimpulan kalau mungkin kami kurang membuka diri dan bertemu orang. 

niatnya yang agak ngawur memang wkwk tapi akhirnya diimbangi dengan pikiran gak ada ruginya nambah pengalaman dan kalau jadi tabungan pahala kenapa gak, akhirnya walau Bang Wawan udah bilang kalau beliau gak bakal ikut ke Pulau Air Raja dan Rani gak bakal dapat izin nyebrang saya tetap ngontak Pak Yoyok yang ada di CP Komunitas Tabungan Akhirat dan langsung mendaftarkan diri, setor uang kas dan uang keberangkatan.

Oh ya sedikit cerita komunitas tabungan akhirat ini inti konsepnya adalah melakukan kegiatan bermanfaat secara bersama yang harapannya memperoleh pahala yang bisa jadi tabungan di akhirat kelak (wkwkw penjelasan yang cuman perpanjangan dari nama, maklum baru ikut), komunitas ini udah dikelola kurang lebih selama 7 tahun. Dari namanya seharusnya udah ditebak kalau nuansanya sosial basis religius.

Dan akhirnya muncullah saya yang paling mencolok dengan celana aladin, sendal gunung, baju dan jilbab toska terang wkwkw :’) serius teduh banget liat mbak-mbak berabaya tertutup dan berniqab. Sempat ngerasa salah gabung nih wkwk tapi sambutan yang hangat dan seiring aktivitas saya justru malah bersyukur banget tetap bangun pagi dan bela2in minta antar bapak mama ke pelabuhan, mereka sampai heran “beneran gak ada yang kenal, yakin berangkat”.. pernyataan mama lebih ngawur lagi, “mau ngerintis jadi anggota dewan dia”.

Kesimpulan : mungkin ketika kamu gabung kesuatu hal yang baru, hal yang pertama kamu buang adalah kamu berbeda, coba aja ngeblend (saya juga masih belajar nih), hapus semua stigma jelek yang ada. mungkin kamu ketika berada disuatu organisasi ada masa aduh nih kegiatan gak jelas banget cuman ngumpul-ngumpul ngobrol dll (asal gak ngomongin orang), tapi percayalah itu lebih baik daripada kamu dikamar sendirian, iya kalau zikir atau ibadah nah kalau bengong atau negbucin. Dua dari sekian keuntungan ikut komunitas/organisasi yang kamu dapat lebih berharga dari uang : pertemuan dan pengalaman :)

Yusuf Khan was Dilip Kumar's previous name

Dilip Kumar, also known as the Tragedy King of the silver screen, had several monikers. For some, he was Mughal-e-Salim. Azam’s Others knew him as Deva since he was the second actor to play Devdas in an adaptation of Saratchandra Chattopadhyay’s tale of the same name.

There were also Ram, Shyam, Rana Vishwa Pratap Singh, and Veer Singh, to name a few. But what exactly was his given name? Producer Devika Rani gave the late actor the screen name Dilip Kumar. Muhammad Yusuf Khan was born in Pakistan’s Peshawar to an Awan family.

WHY DID MUHAMMAD YUSUF KHAN’S NAME CHANGE TO DILIP KUMAR?

Dilip Kumar, born Muhammad Yusuf Khan on December 11, 1922, to Lala Ghulam Sarwar Khan and his wife Ayesha Begum of Peshawar (now in Pakistan), chose a screen name at the urging of producer Devika Rani. Later, the producer cast him in the lead part in the 1944 film Jwar Bhata.

The famous actor disclosed why he changed his identity from Muhammad Yusuf Khan to Dilip Kumar in his book, Dilip Kumar: The Substance and the Shadow.

THRASHING FATHER FEAR

Dilip Kumar wasn’t only influenced by Devika Rani to change his name. Dilip Kumar had remarked in an interview in 1970 with Mahendra Kaul that it was actually because he changed his name from his father’s ‘pitayi ka darr.’

The late star stated his father would never want to play and he dubbed it “nautanki.” Interestingly, his father never likes film-making by the grandson of his Dewan Basheshwarnath Kapoor, Raj Kapoor. The neighbors in Peshawar were Dilip Kumar and Raj Kapoor

Bollywood Movies Part CLIII

Kaira “Koko” (Alia Bhatt) is forced to live with her parents in Goa after a bad breakup. In order to cope with the changes, she decides to see Dr. Jehangir “Jug” Khan (Shah Rukh Khan) for therapy. He becomes her soundboard for her current and past issues and helps her learn to deal with them. 

Dear Zindagi is a good contemporary piece that tries to destigmatize therapy for the common traumas that most people deal with. The movie was a bit slow at points, but I liked it especially for Koko’s relationships with her friends and family and how real the film felt. Favorite songs are Let’s Break Up (flashing video) and Love You Zindagi. Neither song has subtitles.

Sub-Inspector Inderjeet Singh (Arjun Rampal) investigates a hit-and-run case where the victim Vidya Sinha (Vidya Balan) in left in a coma. In the process, he also discovers her past as Durga Rani Singh who is a wanted criminal for the kidnapping of Minnie Dewan (younger: Nisha Khanna, older: Tunisha Sharma) and the murder of Minnie’s grandmother (Amba Sanyal).

TW for movie: child abuse, rape. Kahaani 2: Durga Rani Singh is the next film in the Kahaani franchise and it delivers. The story is a compelling thriller, and different enough from the original that it doesn’t feel overdone. Vidya Balan is wonderful as always, and Arjun Rampal is good as well. Nisha Khanna does a wonderful job portraying the young Minnie Dewan, and Jugal Hansraj’s portrayal of Minnie’s uncle Mohit is spectacular but disturbing. Favorite song is Anandoloke (no subtitles).

Dharam (Ranveer Singh) and Shyra (Vaani Kapoor) begin their relationship daring each other to do increasingly outrageous things. When they breakup, the daring stops and they are able to become friends. When they date others, old feelings begin to resurface.

Befikre is highly juvenile and a bit stupid. The daring each other felt a little abusive at times and not at all like a healthy relationship should. I did enjoy the acting, but I found the actual story poorly done. The movie had some nice bits but I didn’t like it. Favorite songs are You and Me and Je T’aime. Neither song has subtitles.
