Rory Cochrane and Matthew McConaughey in Dazed and Confused (Richard Linklater, 1993)
Cast: Jason London, Joey Lauren Adams, Milla Jovovich, Shawn Andrews, Rory Cochrane, Adam Goldberg, Anthony Rapp, Sasha Jensen, Marissa Ribisi, Michelle Burke, Cole Hauser, Ben Affleck, Parker Posey, Matthew McConaughey, NIcky Katt. Screenplay: Richard Linklater. Cinematography: Lee Daniel. Production design: John Frick. Film editing: Sandra Adair.
In Dazed and Confused, Richard Linklater does something like what Francis Ford Coppola did for the gangster film in The Godfather (1972) or Sam Peckinpah did for the Western in The Wild Bunch (1969): They took a familiar movie genre, in Linklater's case the teen comedy, and perfected it. Linklater doesn't parody it the way Tina Fey did in Mean Girls (Mark Waters, 2004) or sentimentalize it the way George Lucas did in American Graffiti (1973), though the latter film, with its oldies soundtrack, comes closer to what Linklater accomplishes. But Linklater explicitly rejected the nostalgia of American Graffiti. His attitude is summed up by the character Randall "Pink" Floyd (Jason London), the quarterback who resists signing a no alcohol, no drugs pledge so he can stay on the team: "If I ever start referring to these as the best years of my life, remind me to kill myself." Linklater has said that he wanted to avoid the melodramatic excesses of teen films -- the car crashes and pregnancies -- and to reflect the reality of just "riding around and trying to look for something to do with the music cranked up." Roger Ebert and others have called Linklater an anthropologist. It's easy to see this in his best work, such as the 12-years-in-the-making Boyhood (2014) and the Céline-and-Jesse trilogy, Before Sunrise (1995), Before Sunset (2004), and Before Midnight (2013), in which Linklater takes the time to get to know his characters and the way their experiences have shaped them at specific moments in their lives. But in Dazed and Confused we are offered only a few hours with a host of characters, on the last day of school in 1976 -- the summer that Linklater turned 16 -- and into the evening that follows. There is beer and pot and vandalism -- which gets the vandals shot at -- and some rather frustrated sexuality, but it never turns into anything worse than the seniors hazing the freshmen by paddling them, and the most sadistic of the seniors getting a bucket of paint dumped on his head in retribution. There is no plot as such, but who needs plot when you have a cast of formidable but then-unknown young actors, including two future Oscar winners, to create the characters? Ben Affleck evokes the sadism of O'Bannion, whose obsession with paddling freshmen begins to frighten even his fellow hazers. Matthew McConaughey's Wooderson, the twentysomething slacker who still hangs out with high school kids, is the very embodiment of the Peter Pan complex. He insists "You just gotta keep livin', man," but reveals the unacknowledged sadness within by saying, "That's what I love about these high school girls, man. I get older, they stay the same age." Linklater's genius is demonstrated in his ability to tell so much about so many in his huge cast of characters, from the completely baked Slater (Rory Cochrane) to the class nerds (Marissa Ribisi, Anthony Rapp, and Adam Goldberg), in such a short time.

Rising at 5 am may sound early to a lot of us but it’s a typical start to the day for Justin Hartley. But, come on, would you expect anything less from the guy who is both starring in and executive producing Tracker, last season’s biggest broadcast series? “You wake up in the dark and then you work all day and kind of open your eyes and all of a sudden it’s dark again,” Hartley laughs from Vancouver, Canada, where he’s on day three of an eight-day shoot for the second season’s fourth episode. He adds with sincerity, “It’s a lovely life.”
Today is what the Illinois native calls a “light day,” which seems like anything but considering it’s filled with meetings, reading Tracker scripts (and others he may want to develop), working out, grabbing a bite to eat, checking in with his 20-year-old daughter Isabella as well as spending time with wife Sofia Pernas. Also, pressing pause on all that to talk with this reporter about Tracker’s second season, which begins October 13 on CBS.
It’s no surprise that hard work is in the 47-year-old actor’s Midwest blood. “My parents are really hard workers and they’re from the Midwest as well, so there’s definitely something to that,” he said prior to Tracker’s post-Super Bowl premiere in February “It is funny, isn’t it, when you meet someone from the Midwest, you automatically are like, ‘oh, brother, or sister.’ It’s an interesting thing, right?”
The path from Illinois to our TVs started in 2002 when he played often-shirtless Fox Crane for four years on NBC’s daytime soap Passions before leaping to prime time for heroic roles like Oliver Queen (aka Green Arrow) on the CW’s Smallville (as well as Arthur C. Curry, aka Aquaman, in an unsold TV pilot). More guest roles came along on dramas like Revenge and Mistresses as well as a daytime return from 2014-16 as Adam Newman on The Young and the Restless. But his career catapulted in 2016 when he began playing troubled actor Kevin Pearson, one of the Big 3 siblings alongside Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Kate (Chrissy Metz) on NBC’s heartfelt hit This Is Us.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
It was actually before This Is Us ended after six seasons in 2022 that the show’s executive producer and director Ken Olin handed Hartley a copy of Jeffery Deaver’s novel The Never Game and the two sold Tracker to CBS. (Elwood Reid was then brought on as showrunner and executive producer.) Scheduling its debut after Super Bowl LVIII gave the show its best possible shot at success, though Hartley learned long ago that sure bets don’t exist in TV. “You don’t ever suppose or suspect that it’s going to turn into what it turned into. I knew Tracker was really good but, like I said with This Is Us, you just never know if you’re going to find the audience. There’s no way to tell.”
An impressive 18.4 million people stuck around after the Chiefs beat the 49ers 25-22 to watch Tracker’s premiere live, and that number climbed to 30 million once various platforms and delayed viewing were figured in. When the drama settled into its regular Sunday night slot, viewership rose week-to-week, prompting a second season renewal by CBS after only four episodes had aired. Tracker would go on to become the number one regular series for the 2023-24 season and, according to CBS, the first time a first-year series had ranked as number one since Survivor’s debut in 2000.
As the 20-episode second season sets to launch on October 13, Hartley explains what he learned from Season 1 that helped shape Season 2 and talks about Jensen Ackles’ return as Colter’s brother, Russell, in the new season’s second episode.
After Season 1 of any show, you look at what worked and what didn’t. How much did that impact how you all shaped Season 2?
Justin Hartley: That’s a great question. We don’t take this lightly, what happened with the show. Now that we’ve had all the success, you look at what really worked and what we want to do more of that we think the audience would want. You put those things over in one box and you hopefully try to refine the project and the show and make it more streamlined. But you learn as you go and I’m sure we’ll have the same thing after season two where we’ll do that.
The family mystery was a big thread through the first season. Do we get into it again right off the bat in season two? What else is on Colter’s plate?
In the first two episodes, we absolutely do. Also, right off the bat what happens is we’re introduced to a job that Colter got a decade ago. There are two sisters and one of them goes missing. Colter is hired but he’s never been able to crack it and it haunts him. For the first time, we see this guy who is such a hero and always does the right thing but he wasn’t able to find the girl and bring her back. It says a lot about him as a person that he carries it with him but he does not let things go.
Jensen Ackles is back in Episode 2 as Colter’s brother Russell. Safe to say the show digs into the family mystery more?
It has more to do with the family thing. We left off first season with Colter having a lot of questions. He doesn’t even know who he can trust anymore. At the very beginning of last season, he thought his brother was involved in his father’s death, and then come to find out, wait a minute, he might not have had anything to do with it. Also, why is Dory (Colter’s sister, played by Melissa Roxburgh) hiding all this stuff?
So, Russell comes back and Colter’s got a couple of questions for him about this Dory situation and the box that she has and does Russell know where it is? Russell’s also pretty heroic in Episode 2 and they get involved in this really black ops, kind of strange thing. And these government officials start asking about our dad out of the blue, and you’re like, “Whoa, what’s this all about?” So, in every episode, Dad is becoming a little more vindicated maybe, or just maybe completely nuts. We don’t know. We dive a little bit deeper into that.
What’s Colter’s team up to? We know Robin Weigert is not back as Teddi but where does that leave her partner, Velma (Abby McEnany)?
At the end of last season, Reenie (Fiona Rene) decides that she’s leaving her firm and going to go it on her own. She’s got that big life change and, in a way, she teams up with Velma and you’ll see a lot of the two of them working together, which is a really interesting dynamic. They both have common goals with just some completely different ways of going about their business. Bobby (Eric Graise) our computer whiz, is hacking away. Then we have a couple of really cool surprises coming for Reenie.
Tumblr media
Sergei Bachlakov / CBS
Let’s talk about guest stars in the new season. Will Melissa Roxburgh return as Colter’s sister, Dory? I know she’s busy with her new series (NBC’s The Hunting Party).
Her show ends [production] way before we end so we can bring her back in the latter episodes of our show. And then Jennifer Morrison‘s coming back to direct Episode 6. I’m sure her character will be back.
Sofia is back in the third episode as fellow tracker Billie Matalon. That must’ve been a fun week having her back.
Oh, she’s the best and such a talent. She comes in and she just delivers and brings so much more to it than is on the pages. It’s just been a blessing having her and then also I get to spend time with her! It’s my favorite days in the world when I get to work with her.
What happens in the episode?
She calls on Colter because she needs his help for something. And of course, he’s like, “You need my help, huh?” It’s that kind of thing, like, “Well, okay, then ask for it. I’ll help you. You got to ask me,” that kind of thing.
How are you being challenged in Season 2 either as an actor or with the physical stuff?
Well, the episode order is a lot bigger so that’ll be a challenge. We’re only on Episode 4, so I feel great, Jim, to be honest with you. But it’s classic me. In three months, we’ll see how I feel. But there’s more physicality in certain episodes. The fights certainly are more physical but I don’t mind a bruise here so I just trying to keep my body healthy.
Going back to Jensen. You guys obviously have a lot of fun working together but when did you two first meet?
Well, we were both on the CW. He was on Supernatural and I had joined Smallville. I got to know him and Jared and all those guys over there at Supernatural. We’re all actors displaced here in Vancouver and we have a lot in common. He’s a family man and he’s got kids and loves his work and loves his family and loves his fans. We’re the same age and we just developed a friendship. I’d never had a chance to work with him until Tracker. He’s a very busy man, but I love working with him. It’s a treat.
Tumblr media
Michael Courtney/CBS
Where do you see the show going, say, five years down the line. Do you have a vision that far ahead or are you just focusing on what’s in front of you?
That’s a good question. We’ve thought about it. Well, first of all, I would just say that, from your mouth to God’s ear, if we’re lucky enough to do a third season, a fourth season, a fifth season, a sixth season, that would be wonderful. I think the show works in the long run in that we have adopted this idea that although we are a Rockford Files [type show], we do develop the character going forward.
What I really loved about This Is Us…look, I hate to keep talking about it, but I just adore that show and being a part of it. I just love that when you watch a show like that and you tune into Season 1 and then you tune into the last season, you see the development of the character and you go, “Wait a minute, are they playing different roles?” But then if you watch it throughout the years, you go, “Oh my gosh,” and you experience those things with the characters. As competent and confident as Colter is, I don’t at all think for a second that he doesn’t have a ton to learn, especially about himself and his family and all that. Going forward, I think that will be how the show lives on a long runway, is that we keep developing this character and he becomes better at what he’s doing.  He’s a restless man, and for an audience member, at least shows that I love to watch, you love to see that growth of a character and we have that.

That’s a memory I don’t think I could ever forget, because it’s a very happy one.”Coco Jones, “8 Days of Christmas”“It’s so impactful when a genre and a holiday really mesh perfectly,” singer-songwriter Coco Jones tells Apple Music. “I feel like that’s the foundation for a classic holiday song, and ‘8 Days of Christmas’ is a classic.”Elevation Worship, “Here Comes Heaven”For their contribution to this season’s curated selection of holiday songs, the Christian worship group reimagined their 2018 hit song “Here Comes Heaven” from their live album Hallelujah Here Below. “We’re really excited about having this version of our song mixed in Spatial Audio,” Elevation Worship singer Chris Brown tells Apple Music. “Knowing it would be experienced that way gave us extra creative incentive and license to throw unique sounds and instruments around in different places.” Ángela Aguilar, “Te Deseo Muy Felices Fiesta”“I think that ‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ is a beautiful song that embodies positivity and love and gratitude and a message of ‘everything is going to get better’—and I love that,” Mexican American singer Ángela Aguilar tells Apple Music. “‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ has always been a part of our Christmas playlist in the house, and it's a song that we all get to sing, and it’s part of my childhood. This song has really grown with me.”Armani White, “All I Want for Christmas Is My Two Front Teeth”“I chose ‘Two Front Teeth’ because I used to have a silver tooth when I was a kid,” rapper Armani White tells Apple Music. “I wanted to find a record that could still bring that childlike kid energy into Christmas.”Ella Henderson, “Stay Another Day”“I wanted to produce up this record and do it very differently to the original, but still stick to the original structure,” English singer-songwriter Ella Henderson tells Apple Music. “I wanted to add a few more gospel elements to it, really strip it right back to just myself and a piano. We've got an incredible string arrangement on there, and I think altogether, it just has this really beautiful, minimalistic element, but it also extends to this heightened emotional state.”G Flip, “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)”“I chose to cover ‘Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)’ because I just love the song,” Australian singer-songwriter G Flip tells Apple Music. “It’s a banger of a Christmas carol. The Darlene Love version is really awesome, and her wailing vocals on it, how she just lets it rip, especially in the outro, is so great.”Lauren Spencer Smith, “Hallelujah”“I’ve always loved singing ‘Hallelujah,’ and there’s so many different versions of it that so many different artists have created,” Canadian singer-songwriter Lauren Spencer Smith tells Apple Music. “I love singing this song around the holidays, but as a kid, I sang this song all the time at singing competitions and for my mom in the kitchen, so I thought it would be really cool to do a recorded version of this as I got older for Christmas.”Hemlocke Springs, “Christmas Time Is Here”“I think music is one of the biggest reasons why I really enjoy Christmas,” singer-songwriter Hemlocke Springs tells Apple Music. “Christmas music just hits really hard for no reason. It just hits so hard in the feelings. Even with the song I cover, ‘Christmas Time Is Here,’ it can bring me into a happy, joyful, and melancholic state all at the same time. It’s like I’m looking back on memories that have happened in the past and also looking forward to the future. Christmas music just enhances those feelings for me.”Jensen McRae feat. Gallant, “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas”“It taps into what I love most about all Christmas music and what I try to tap into in my music, which is this sense of nostalgia,” singer-songwriter Jensen McRae tells Apple Music. “It reaches back in time in this really beautiful way, but also doesn’t feel dated.” For this year’s Carols Covered, McRae opted to cover the classic track “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas,” and enlisted some help from Maryland singer-songwriter Gallant. “‘Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas’ is one of those classic quintessential Christmas songs,” Gallant says. “It’s probably my favorite Christmas song. It doesn’t go too deep into the symbolism or the technicalities or the religious aspect of the holiday, and as a result, you get a song that, at least for people who celebrate Christmas, is very universal. It talks about gathering with your friends and family, being grateful to be able to spend that time together.”Jeongyeon of TWICE, “O Christmas Tree”“I thought it could bring back some sweet holiday memories for everyone while they listen to my cover,” TWICE member Jeongyeon tells Apple Music. “‘O Christmas Tree’ is one of my must-listen holiday songs. And it takes me back to those comfy times hanging out with my friends and family enjoying the holiday vibes together.”*****Randall Goosby & Carlos Simon, “The Christmas Song”Randall Goosby (violin): “Nat King Cole’s "The Christmas Song" has always been a favourite Christmas carol of mine. He’s the epitome of smooth, suave warmth—everything you’d want to associate with the holidays. I thought it would be the perfect occasion to blend the smoothness of Nat King Cole with the smoothness of the great Carlos Simon to create this wonderful arrangement for you all.” Carlos Simon (piano and arranger): “Of course, I thought of Nat King Cole, the swooning strings and the lush harmonic structure, but I wanted to create something that’s quite Debussy- or Ravel-like in my arrangement, with lush arpeggios and sort of a swooning melody line.”Xuefei Yang, “Ave Maria”“Just as good movies must have soundtracks to enhance the feelings, for me great holidays must have music to enrich the soul and relax the mind. I find the melody of Schubert’s "Ave Maria" so beautiful and touching, which is perhaps why it has been adopted over the years for many occasions, including Christmas. I arranged Schubert’s piece for two guitars, and I play both parts myself, using one guitar as my voice and the other to accompany. Lyricism is one of my trademarks, and this piece gives me the opportunity to really make the guitar sing.”The Sixteen & Harry Christophers, “Bethlehem Down”Harry Christophers (conductor): “I’ve always loved the music of Peter Warlock, and this particular carol has a special place in my heart—I remember singing it when I was a student at Oxford University. Peter Warlock composed Bethlehem Down in 1927 as an entry into The Daily Telegraph’s carol-writing competition when Warlock was in financial difficulty, and he won. I think that’s just brilliant! "Warlock’s version is just four verses for a cappella choir—what we’ve done is just add piano and violin interludes between each verse in a very atmospheric style. I think Peter Warlock would have been very pleased we did this.”Olivia Belli, “God Rest Ye Merry Gentlemen”“God Rest You Merry Gentlemen" is not from my own tradition, but its melody attracted me because of its noble and archaic character. I really like its implicit harmonic possibilities, which allow me to play between major and minor, between sweet and bitter. "In the holidays, we have our own ritual regarding music: in the morning, while we decorate the house or cook or wrap gifts, we love lively and rhythmic music. After lunch, which represents for us a moment of pause, we like to listen to smooth songs with a winter mood, while in the evening it’s time for traditional, sacred songs.”Maria Dueñas, “El cant del ocells”Maria Dueñas (violin): “El cant dels ocells " was made famous by the great Spanish cellist Pablo Casals, and is a traditional Catalan song and lullaby. The original text speaks of nature’s joy at learning of the birth of Jesus, with many birds gathering to celebrate. I associate Christmas with spending time with my family and having time to reflect, so I chose a work with a nostalgic and intimate feeling—the feeling of going back home.”Carols Covered playlist link: apple.co/carolscovered Read the full article

Heaving yourself over the chain link fence, Slater is quick to clumsily follow behind. Giggling, you drop down drunkenly, scrambling to your feet to help Slater carefully tumble over the other side.
“I got it. I got it,” he smiles, using your shoulders as support as he tries to stand on the flimsy wraps of metal without anything to hold onto. “Alright, go away.”
Stepping back as he had asked, it takes all about ten seconds before he’s colliding with the ground with a hard thud. You try your best to stay quiet, but the groans that follow soon after cause you to explode. As best as you can manage, you wheeze while taking his hand and lifting him up, “Don’t got it.”
“Hey, I was up there for a long time! Try beating that!”
“Nah, I’d rather keep my head in tact,” you slur, handing him the indiscreet bottle wrapped inside a paper bag.
He happily obliges, eyes quickly being entertained with holding the bottle without spilling, your eyes scanning the field to find the rest of the gang. Just along the other side of the football field, the familiar cackling of young teens tells you that you guys showed up too late.
“Hey, there they are!” you can hear Don shouting, voice echoing throughout the stands and bleachers.
Shoving Slater, you guys fall into a not-so-sturdy race, feet flying about and hands scattered in all directions to prevent falling on your faces again. The group, staring at your liquid-enhanced happiness, laugh as they decide to move towards the center of the field.
Sucking in greedy breaths of air, you both go tumbling into the grass before the group. Slater rolls into Pink and Simone while you crash into Don’s awaiting arms.
“Perfect landing,” he grins into your ear, making sure to leave a teasing nibble on the lobe, eyes digging straight into the particularly long haired brunette across from him.
“Shut up,” you groan, lifting off of him to sit cross-legged besides Slater once more.
For some time, you indulge in the adventures of David Wooderson; the many women he’s been with, the crazy shit he got himself into and how he got out of it, the places he’s been. Although they were bizarre, they kept the group entertained through their buzzed hazes, laughing and giggling at every punch line.
Laying across Slater’s thighs, you support your head with both of your crossed arms. Beside you, Slater takes turns in passing the joint between you both, one arm supporting his own head as he stares up at the stars.
The group had fallen in a comfortable silence, indulging in the short-lived peace that is soon to be destroyed as the morning light comes up. Slowly, with the peaking sun just above the treeline, Shavonne and Simone make their exit through the front gate of the school’s football stadium.
You sadly let them go, knowing that senior year is just about over for you, hugging them as they depart. Wooderson is next to leave, still tipsy over last night’s drinks, he comfortably grabs the bottle of tequila he was nursing, leaving before the cops have a chance to get him.
Watching the clouds turn a deep shade of orange like gold, you, Slater, and Pink all sit up side by side to watch the end of the show.
“Hey man...woman....this isn’t the end of us, is it?” Slater slurs, turning briefly to look the each of you in the eye.
“Hell no!” you yell, looking at him as if he’s crazy, “You’re my best friend, Slater, my partner in crime. I’m not done with you yet.”
He smiles at the drastic bit of reassurance, sharing a look of fond companionship. Swiftly, the both of you nudge shoulders and turn towards Pink, expectant eyes waiting for his answer that didn’t come as naturally as it should’ve.
He looks Slater in the eyes, then they slip to yours in a sense of regret and premature sadness. Sighing, he blows, “I don’t known, man. We hung out with each other because we were stuck with each other. Now we have no reason to be around - hang out like we used to. We aren’t kids anymore, we’re adults about to enter the big, wide world we’ve been dying for. Who knows what the next year or two will take us.”
“That’s why we make sure it doesn’t happen,” you counter, staring off at the sky again.
“And how can you ensure that, Y/N?” Pink asks with a defensiveness you aren’t quite used to hearing.
“Because,” you snap your head towards him sharply, “If we want to be in each other’s lives, we’ll make damn sure that we stick around.” Your eyes, stern and soft at the same time, bore into his own with and intensity and determination set.
Neither Pink nor Slater argue you, Pink still staring at you with disbelief and no change in his thoughts. He doesn’t believe you, not completely.
“Pink,” you try to compose yourself, setting your voice to a lighter tone to avoid further argument. “If you’re friends and truly scared of losing them, the love and bond you share should say enough. You don’t just fucking disappear on your own, you’ll let that shit happen and you’ll know you’re doing it, too. We’ve lost a lot of good friends, but they weren’t built to last. Our friendship, well, it’ll last a lifetime.”
Slater pulls you in by your shoulder, side hugging you with a warm, kooked-out smile, “Yeah man. Even our kids will be friends.”
You laugh at that, looking back at Pink, his head down and hands playing with the grass. “I don’t know,” his voice cracks a bit.
Looking back at Slater, he nods, whispering in your ear, “Tell him Y/N, you’ve got nothing to lose. He needs you.” You smile at his unnatural encouragement, he’s always good at finding the right words, as rare as they come. Getting up from the grass and waving his goodbye, he winks at you, going back through the woods in which you came silently.
“Pink,” you mumble, shuffling closer to him and placing a hand underneath his head, pulling him up to look at you by his chin. When he looks up, his eyes are glossy and threatening to break down at any moment, softening as you look at him. “I’m not going anywhere anytime soon, you hear me?”
“I just don’t want to lose us,” he chokes, a tear sneaking past him before he could wipe it away.
“We won’t. We- I-,” you stutter to find the words. You know what you want to tell him, but you don’t know how to - too scared of the possibility of rejection. “I love you, Pink, always have, always will. I’ve stuck around this long without an inch of expectation from you, what makes you think it’ll change now? You’re gonna go places, Pink, but don’t think I won’t be too far behind you, making sure you get just where you need to be.”
For once, he smiles at you, a glossy wet smile that cracks through the shadows of doubt swirling in his head. “You’re talking about the pledge, aren’t you.”
“Oh, you’re signing that pledge, don’t get me wrong, but no, I’m talking about anywhere and wherever you go. You don’t have to be this huge NFL football player for me to love you just the same, you’re always gonna be Pink from Lee High School in good, old Austin, Texas, yeah?”
“Yeah,” he smirks, looking down at the grass again.
“Hey,” you pull his head up again, “I’m serious, Pink.”
“I know,” he mumbles, “Just scared for our futures, you know? I don’t know where I’m going yet.”
“And you’re not gonna know for a long time, you’re still in high school. You’ll figure life out just like the rest of us, you just have to get through the last year of high school. Shit, I mean, I don’t even know what the fuck to do with myself yet and I just graduated.”
He laughs at that, smiling wide for you to see as he gives you a once over, “You’re gonna do just fine, Y/N. You always get your shit together. You have nothing to worried about.”
“Neither do you,” your smirk, poking his arm.
You guys fall into a comfortable silence for a moment or two, riddled with your own thoughts before Pink speaks up again, “So, you love me, huh?”
“Oh, shut up,” your face heats up, this time being the one to look at the grass for answers. “I knew you’d pick that up.”
“How could I not, it was such a beautiful speech, really made me tear up.”
You laugh at him, shoving his shoulder as you get back up on your feet. Outstretching your hand, Pink takes it, frame towering over yours with his natural height and intensity.
Slowly, you guys make your way to the front gate of the football field. There, you find Slater, stomping out his half-smoked joint just as Coach Bronco emerges from the parking lot, holding a finger up to his lips with a smile.
“Ah, Randy,” Bronco chirps, acting as if he hadn’t been waiting for a while, “You sign that pledge yet?”
“Actually,” you step before him, “He was just going to sign it now, do you have a pen?” You smile nice a sweet, Bronco pulling out a pen and handing it to you. “Oh, and we kind of lost the paper,” you smirk innocently, “You know, with the parties and stuff tonight, it got lost.”
“Oh sure, I’ve got a copy,” he runs back to his car to fetch another paper.
Pink elbows you in the side and you turn to smile devilishly at him, “You’ve got a gift, I’m not going to stand by and watch you spoil it, Pink.”
“Here you are,” Coach Bronco smiles.
“Thank you,” you take it from him, handing it over to Pink and turning around, offering your back for him to use to sign it. Begrudgingly he does as you’d silently instructed, signing the paper and handing it back.
“Thanks Randy, we look forward to seeing you next year. Don’t get soft on us,” then Bronco leans in, whispering something you can’t quite make out, turning to sneak a peak at Slater, hiding in the bushes. “And don’t let that one go, that one knows what they’re talking about. A good influence...special.”
“Alright! Thanks Coach, I’ll see you next year,” Pink exclaims, motioning towards his want for Bronco to leave.
“Thanks Coach B, he’ll be back better than ever. You just wait!”
“I hope so,” and with that, Bronco leaves seemingly happy with the outcome.
“That doesn’t mean I’m not smoking this summer,” Pink mutters.
“All you had to do was sign it, now you’re free,” you smile. “Come on, lets go home, we need to sleep at some point.”
Waving at Slater, he comes bounding out of the bushes again, a tipsy smile on his face. “Does that mean I have to find a new smoking buddy?”
“Nah, I’m not done yet,” Pink smirks.
“Hey, I thought I was your smoking buddy?” you punch Slater’s arm.
“Ow!” he exclaims dramatically. “You are my smoking best friend,” he corrects.
“So, I’m more special then?”
“Sure,” he smirks.
Walking down the parking lot, you part ways, hugging Pink before you turn back to Slater, wrapping your arm around his waist due to his height. Pink goes the other direction with a giggle, watching as Slater puts all of his weight onto you, wobbling down the road.
Before he turns the corner, Pink calls out, “Oh, and Y/N?!”
Turning around, you look back at him, “Yeah?”
“I love you, too!”
Confusion laces your features as quickly as his blow, looking up at Slater to make sure you heard it right. Slater looks down at you, eyebrows raised with a shrug. Turning back to Pink, a huge smile breaks across your face.
Down the road, Pink smiles back with a red hue to his cheeks, “Did you hear me?”
Suddenly, you let go of Slater and bound towards Pink, almost tackling him as you jump on him. Wrapping his arms around your waist, he chuckles loud, smirking down at you as he places a kiss to your nose.
“Are you serious?” you ask, looking up at him with bewilderment.
“Well, you didn’t really give me a chance to say it back, did you?”
“You’re not answering my question.”
“Do I need to say it again?”
“For clarification purposes, please?”
“I love you, Y/N Y/L/N. I have since we were Freshmen.”
Turning around, you give Slater a double thumbs up, him smiling and imitating a gagging motion. “I love you, too, Randall Floyd.”

New To Me - September 2021
New To Me - September 2021 @ArcaneWonders @ThamesAndKosmos @strongholdgames @gilhova @gmtgames @tired_wings
Another month and another “New to Me” games post. This is the 50th! It feels so good to finally be playing some new games. I’m trying to play some of the many games I bought during the worst of the pandemic (so this is probably where I shouldn’t say that I just bought five more games, right?) The Cult of the New to Me has been pretty quiet during the height of the lockdowns and everything.…
