Film: THE SPARROW IN THE CHIMNEY (dir. Ramon Zürcher, 2024, Switzerland)
Forum: Chicago Int'l Film Festival Format: DCP
Observations: I've enjoyed all of this filmmaker's features and this may be his best one yet, another domestic tale of the uncanny but this time with a swerve into pure horror. The director was in attendance. Again, I was surprised by the pallid turnout, not even half the theater was full.

2024 Home Viewing #36: The Strange Little Cat. (dir. Ramon Zürcher, 2013)
Oh, how I hated this film. It strives performatively to be eccentric, its dialogue is stilted in a way no conceptual methodology can defend, and most of its actors are annoying. For most other films I'd excuse the poetic license of the film's title that has nearly zero to do with anything (there is a cat in the house, but it's not strange and is on screen for about 40 total seconds), but here it's just one more annoying thing. The poster matches all of this: random photos of a glass of milk and a moth and one of just several children in the film, the one pictured here being arguably the least important character among them. And this is part of a trilogy, I hear? Zürcher goes on my blacklist after this.
