Illicit desires
The old wooden door made a creaking noise as Kedar pushed at it....Rohit was close on heels of Kedar and followed him to enter the room.....he swerved his neck to look at all corners of the room as Kedar switched on the light....the room, to his pleasant surprise, was quite spacious and clean, with a queen size bed in the center.
"Make yourself comfortable, Doctor babu. I will be there at the ground floor. Give me a call if you need anything."....Kedar said as he placed Rohit's bag at one corner of the room.
"Thank you Kedar chacha.".....Rohit said, then as he sat on a chair to open his sneakers, he glanced towards Kedar who was about to walk out of the door and said "Can I get a cup of tea, Kedar chacha? It has been a long journey."
"Of course Doctor babu....I will bring you a cup of tea very soon....do you need anything else?"
"No Kedar chacha, that will be enough for now!"....Rohit replied with a smile on his face....as he opened his socks....and as Kedar left the room and walked down the stairs, Rohit headed towards the bathroom to freshen up...
Rohit was 27, had recently completed his MD degree and was looking for an opportunity to establish himself as a medical practitioner. His preference was to get settled in either of the cities of Bengaluru or Mumbai. He had some initial hiccups with a couple of prospective offers from two prominent medical colleges getting delayed at the last moment.
It was then that the offer came through. Rohit was initially reluctant to take up the offer; after all spending the initial one or two years of his practice in a village was not something that excited him too much. But once the offer price was doubled, he could not turn it down. It could have taken him 4-5 years to earn that much as was being offered by the zameendar of Yamipura village. "It would probably not be that bad".....he told himself, before giving his consent, for serving as the doctor in Yamipura village, with all his needs to be catered for by the zameendar.
Rohit walked out of the bathroom and then took out a few key items for daily usage from his luggage. He then opened the door to the balcony and strolled out. The evening sun had just set and the reddish hue was still there in the horizon....The light outside had started to fade....he looked outwards....the building he was in was situated at a stone's throw distance from the main haveli....and there was a garden in between..
He looked at all sides....the landlord had ensured that the space of land on which his residence was built was well maintained....there were a number of flower trees scattered all over the wide garden in the courtyard....and then there was an 8 feet tall wall separating the landnlord's residential space from the land outside and maintained by the peasants....
Rohit strolled gently to the other side of the building....and then  he saw something which attracted his attention....There were two women who were enjoying a leisurely walk by the garden which was situated on the north western side of the annex building.....he could not clearly see the face of one of the women as her head was covered by her ghoonghat....But from the way she carried herself Rohit could make out that she exuded some kind of authority.....her accomplice was a lively young girl, whose age Rohit guessed to be around 18 yrs.
Rohit was thinking as to what should be his next course of action, when the young woman look upwards and had eye contact with him....Rohit could see that the young woman had a slightly dusky but a pretty face....she was wearing a normal yellow cotton saree....Rohit never had high regards about women in the village....but she found the young girl rather attractive....her eyes were full of curiosity....her lips were almost constantly in motion as she was continuing to blabber something....he could even see her shake her shoulders while speaking about something before she looked up....and from the short distance and advantage of the elevation which Rohit had, he could get a good measure of her young breasts that were clad in the white colored blouse, were not too big but probably were still growing.... She seemed to freeze for a moment as she locked eyes with Rohit, before turning towards the other lady and whispering something into her ears....
The other woman was slightly taller....and was wearing a cotton saree which seemed  to be an expensive one....she was turned the other way, but after hearing from the other woman who was giving her company, she swiveled quickly to face Rohit's balcony....
Rohit could not get a clear sight of the other woman's face....because of her ghoonghat he could only see her lips, which were reddish and quite luscious, and her perfectly shaped pointed nose....her body was slightly heavier than the other girl....and even though it was carefully covered with the orange saree and blouse, Rohit could make out that she was quite busty......and she was fair too....
It was her turn to whisper something to the other girl's ear....and then they both turned and hurriedly walked back towards the main haveli.....Rohit stood there on the balcony, a bit undecided on how to react, as he watched the swaying asses of the two women getting away from him; it was a sight to behold and he could not help but gawk at it as his male hormones were stirred up...
"I have kept your tea in the room, Doctor babu!"....Rohit was stirred back into reality on hearing the voice......Kedar was standing on the balcony and slightly behind him....and he did not know for how long...
"Who are those two women....Kedar chacha?"....Rohit inquired while heading into his room.
"That was Rani Saheba...and Chameli....her chief maid"....Kedar said, as he followed Rohit into the room..
Rohit could make out that Kedar was referring to the zameendar's wife....It was customary for people of the village to call their masters in that way...
"Take rest today Doctor babu....Raja Saheb has said that he will talk to you tomorrow morning.".....Kedar said.....while walking towards the door...."I will bring your dinner at 8 PM."
As he moved out of the room, Kedar stalled there for a moment..
"What is it Kedar chacha?....Are you going to say something?"....Rohit asked.
Kedar hesitated a bit and then said....."Try not to look at Rani Saheba and the other women of the haveli, Doctor babu....for your own good!"....and then walked away....and down the stairs
Rohit sat on the bed.....trying to fathom the meaning of Kedar's words....which was not too difficult to understand....since he knew that the people of the village would naturally be quite conservative.

PM Modi to be first PM at AMU event since 1964
Tumblr media
AGRA: Prime Minister Narendra Modi will be the chief guest at celebrations marking 100 years of Aligarh Muslim University, one of the country’s oldest varsities, on December 22. “A centenary is a landmark in the history of any university
The entire AMU community and I are grateful to the PM for accepting our invitation,” vice-chancellor Tariq Mansoor told TOI on Wednesday. “The PM’s presence at this historic event will be immensely helpful to the growth and development of the university and placement of our students.” Union HRD minister Ramesh Pokhriyal Nishank will also be attending, he added. The last time a sitting PM attended an event at the university was in 1964, when Lal Bahadur Shastri delivered the convocation address. It does come with a change of plans though. AMU officials had earlier told TOI that President Ram Nath Kovind would be attending the centenary celebrations. Now, however, he has deferred his plan and will be attending in February 2021. All events will be held online, given the Covid-19 restrictions in place. A senior AMU official told TOI that the PM’s presence would “send a strong message to BJP functionaries who keep attacking the institution.” AMU protests against CAA had led to a backlash last year. Its scholars have been vocal against cases of violence against women in UP and in favour of the ongoing farmers’ protest in Delhi. The VC did not share the itinerary for December 22, but sources said the PM may inaugurate the newly constructed campus gate, release a postal stamp and a commemorative coffee table book, and attend the burial of a ‘time capsule’ with AMU memorabilia. Muhammadan Anglo-Oriental College was set up in 1875 by Sir Syed Ahmad Khan, along the lines of what he saw at Oxford and Cambridge. In 1920, it was renamed Aligarh Muslim University and was formally inaugurated as a university on December 17 by then VC Mohammad Ali Mohammad Khan, the Raja Saheb of Mahmudabad.

End of the pioneer chapter of Indian slide Guitar
Pt Brijbhushan Kabra a Legend forever his contribution is impeccable
Tumblr media
Myself with Pt Brijbhushan Kabra and Kamala Ben his wife at the India International Guitar Festival  at Calcutta . People close to him called him           “ Paapaji”
Anyone playing the Slide Guitar in India has to have heard his name .His contribution of bringing the Slide Guitar as an Indian Classical instrument  is  impeccable  . His rendition of Bihag and Hemant are immortal classics .
“ Call of the Valley ” was a path breaking album in many ways .
It made Pt Brijbhushan Kabra a name to recon with later his album of Jugalbandi with Ustad Rais Khan also became popular especially after being used in a Shatrughan Sinha movie . A new instrument was born and looked like it was very powerful .Powerful enough to take on the SITARS and the SARODS and the SARANGIs but it also suffered a stigma .The Sitar and the Sarod were happily accepted as they came from Persian backgrounds and that was always  very acceptable to our purists .On the other hand some purists thought that this Guitar was to be played  by long haired people wearing dark glasses dancing in a drug induced stupor basically Zeenat Aman in Hare Rama Hare Krishna . Later careful observations started linking the Vichitra Veena and Gottuvadyam of the south to the HAWAIIN GUITAR a very new version of Guitar cause it came form the Hawaiian islands till research again showed that it apparently went from the South of India through Gabriel Davion  . It is still an everyday struggle when people come to me every summer vacation and  want to learn the guitar played by the topless SALMAN KHAN . So new names evolved  SLIDE GUITAR / LAP STEEL GUITAR / STEEL GUITAR ...... .On a general reference basically it is a simple guitar which you keep horizontally on your lap and play by gently rubbing the strings with a steel bar . More details can be accessed if you mail directly to me .
In short Pt Brijbhushan Kabra who was from a very affluent background decided to play Hindustani Classical music on this instrument . An electric version of this instrument was already played by HAZARA SINGH ,  VAN SHIPLEY and SUNIL GANGULY .There is also a story of the MUZUMDAR brothers from Allahabad to have played classical already on this guitar but concrete recordings are not available a lot of it is hearsay .
Pt Brijbhushan Kabra was suddenly propelled to Legendary status straight away much of which he did not take seriously . His family  also had great musicians like Pt Damodar Lal Kabra . He was a disciple of the Legendary Ustad Ali Akbar Khan of Maihar ( any instrumental music has to have generated from the Maihar or Etawah Gharanas in India ) . Kabraji somehow found classical to be his only love and he was not particularly charmed by film music so he pursued only classical while as the other 2 artistes in Call of the Valley got into movie music and all that Jazz .
“ Music of the deserts” released way later did not attract much attention wonder why
So started his lonely journey  .
He was never really interested in fame . He was a kind of a loner . A very poignant and an enigmatic soul .Often misunderstood but never apologetic .
He told me that he stopped playing Jugalbandi's after the historical episode of his Jugalbandi with Pt Shivkumar SHARMA WHERE BOTH THE INSTRUMENTS CRACKED AT THE SAME TIME AS THEY WHERE TUNED SO PERFECTLY TO EACH OTHER .He would always tell the story of him picking up the guitar at the store and then staring to play classical . He would always gently add that he never claimed to be the first one to do so .
Spending time with him in private was incredible  his sense  of humour was crazy he could come up with really crazy ones at times .
Year 2002 afternoon 3 pm suddenly my mobile rings and an unknown number is flashing  I take the call and a voice thunders
“ KIDHAR BHATAK RAHA HAI “ ( where are you roaming aimlessly )   for a moment I froze in my tracks cause I identified the voice instantly . “ Ji Banglaur me hi hoon” I replied innocently .” kal kya Kar rahe ho” and he only answered “kuch nahi ...idhar aa jao” . Such was his personality
I learnt later on that he had come to perform for the National Law School  as a part of some SPICMACAY concerts . Most dutifully I attended the next day concert it was beautiful he played Nat Bhairav in Roopk Tall ( 7 Beats ) . The Tabla accompanist was Gurumurthy Vaidya , After the concert he announced lets shift to your house . I was happily surprised and took up the challenge ( as it will show )  .
Mornings wer special with endless chai and incredibly dirty gossip on all the musicians of the world . In private every musician thinks that everyone else is aweful  . He was like an uncrowned prince and did not like taking questions but then who does .
One morning when I played Raag Gurjari Todi alaap in front of him a little tensed though he sat quietly without responding and almost dozing off . After some time when I stopped he said “ AUR”  ...
Later in the afternoon when we were about to go for lunch I asked him if he liked what I played . He looked at me with absolutely no expression and gently said “ BAKWAAS “ . I became quiet after that and did not speak anything as the lunch progressed in silence I think my expressions were as clear as water after some time he said “ BURA MAAN GAYA “ I tried hard to contain my tears and said “ NAHI NAHI “ . The Legends somehow have this habit of unnerving you to just check your defensive system .Well it works often is all I can say . After that day I did not dare to pick up the guitar and play the instrument in front of him . He slowly remarked after a day or two “ mainay daunt diva is liye mere samne nahi bajayega kya” ... Interally I agreed totally but dare not say that so I used to play some small compositions in front of him . Days passed on like a haze and we also ended up on some very heated discussions  when I told him that you left the future generations to fend for themselves and did not stand with them . He actually broke down and I felt really bad about that . Thats when I felt that his community philosophy came in his way of not wanting to become an active performer . Whenever prodded beyond a certain point or intimidated he would retort to a single line  “YE VADYA ITNA CHOTA BHI NAHI KI BAGAL ME DABA KAR NIKAL PADE”
Sometime I also felt that our society is actually very cruel because his contribution was not looked at as anything special by our happy citizens who all believe in becoming singers . An artiste and his art both need to be nurtured by society . Sometimes you might not understand the subject but does that negate the value of the subject .
Interestingly  the slide guitar is the one which has so many evolved names in our country at this rate as a reflection of this in the west we should have had
CLAPTON VEENA ,  PAGE VEENA , HARRISON VEENA ..SO ON AND SO FORTH
ANOTHER IRONY IS THAT THE SLIDE GUITAR  HAS WON “ GRAMMY AWARDS” FOR INDIA
Pt Vishwamohan Bhatt ( Grammy Award for  A meeting by the river )
Pt Debashish Bhattacharya ( Grammy Nominations )
Yours truly  ( Grammy as Composer Vocalist and Guitarist for Winds of Samsara _)
GOOGLE MIGHT HELP IF YOU SEEK
Tumblr media
At my house in the year 2002 .
From left ( seated )  - Dr Mani Sontakke , Pt Brijbhushan Kabra  Dr Raja Bhau Sontakke
Behind - Chaitra Sontakke , Anurag Sontakke , Prakash Sontakke
He was always very respectful of his Ustad Ali Akbar Khan saheb . Sometimes I felt that even if you were with him you were not with him .He was not particularly fond of any artistes in specific  but did remember Pt Omkarnath Thakur with great respect . My father and he got into discussions for hours on Omkarnathji and his gayaki. He was basically an ancient soul trapped in charismatic confusions of Art , Fame and his ideological world and its present trappings  . According to his community diktat and followings he was not supposed to earn from Arts and found it very lowly to do so .Another subtle point  to also note is that if you do not live in Mumbai you kind of don't exist on the active “ who is who “ Artistic map of india .
Some of his recordings are available online as well especially his Raag Hemant which was a life changing experience for many I am sure . His Multani is also beautiful with Ustad Zakir Hussein on Tabla  . His Bihag
.. the list is endless . His technique was an interesting fabric of melodic glances and subtle Tantrakari . He used to say “ don’t  get into vulgar display of technique its an insult to music”. Pt Debashish Bhattacharya is one of his famous disciples and is bringing laurels to this great instrument  . He also organises this beautiful festival called India International Guitar Festival and has achieved great success in trying to bring all the slide guitarists of this country  under an umbrella .
Lets all hope for a bright future of this instrument  and lets all pay our sincere respects to Pt Brijbhushan Kabra and take this instrument  called Indian Classical Slide Guitar to new heights .
summing up his greatest philosophies in one sentence
“ If you don’t understand it by yourself don’t expect me to explain”
- BRIJBHUSHAN KABRA
