The painting seen above was made between about 1835 and 1840. It was during those years that the first railways were being laid across England with some of them being laid in London. The days of the stage coach were about to end abruptly as a faster and easier mode of transport was about to emerge. At the date of the painting, the General Post Office stood on the east side of St Martin’s le Grand – a short street running north from near St Paul’s Cathedral. As time went by, additional premises were built on the west side of St Martin’s le Grand. The earlier buildings no longer exist but those on the west side of the street are still to be seen, now in use as commercial offices. The General Post Office was the hub from which Royal Mail coaches set off.

Royal Mail coaches were so-called for an obvious reason – they carried the letters and parcels for the Royal Mail. The royal insignia on the lower part of the side door of the coach can just be seen. As well as carrying the mail, the coaches also carried passengers. Usually four people sat inside a coach, sitting on two facing bench seats with just enough room for two passengers each side. Another passenger is sitting beside the coachman and yet another is seated behind him. At the back of the coach is the guard. Yes, even in those times there was a danger that the coach – which often carried valuables in the mail – might be robbed. The guard was always armed with a pistol.

The passengers in the coach paid more to travel in a Royal Mail coach than a normal one because it travelled faster. In the 1800s most coaching routes ran on privately maintained roads – known as toll-roads or turnpikes. The roads had toll-gates at strategic points along them because it was the users who paid for the upkeep of these roads. Not only did a normal coach have to stop about every 10 to 15 miles to change horses but they also had to stop to pay their toll at each point along the road. This all added to the total journey time. Mail coaches were free from paying tolls by law. In fact it was required that the gate-keeper open the gate in good time to allow the speeding Royal Mail coach to pass through unhindered. There were penalties on the gate-keeper if he was slow to respond. If reported he would face a heavy fine or even dismissal.

f you have ever stood on a station platform, waiting for a train in winter time, and felt you were freezing to death, then spare a thought for those in that coach. There was no heating and the coach only travelled at about 10 or 12 miles per hour. Even the journey from London to Brighton was likely to take five or six hours. Brighton is only 60 miles from London which means that non-stop would take at least five hours. Then add in the time to change horses every 10 miles and then possibly one ‘comfort’ stop and time to have a stiff drink, the total journey time could easily extend to six hours on the road. In a snow-drift speed would fall dramatically and travelling the Brighton Road might result in a journey of eight to ten hours on the road. At least the wind was not in your face if you paid to sit inside the coach but even so it must have been bitterly cold. For those ‘outside’, sitting on the roof, the cold must have been almost unbearable, especially with the winter wind in your face. If it snowed along the route, you were covered in snow as well!

Are you beginning to get the picture? Even a poor train service today, when the heaters are not working in the railway carriage, is infinitely better then stage coach travel in the 18th and early 19th centuries. Chances are that Charles Cooper Henderson had himself endured such a journey and he therefore had first hand experience to bring to this evocative painting. Perhaps modern long-distance travel today is not really that bad!

The Man with the Watches

Originally written in 1898 as part of a series of short stories called Round the Fire. Doyle needed money to complete a house he was building in Surrey. Insert your own jokes about actors, bad movies and extensions here.

Rugby is a town in Warwickshire, 83 miles north of London. Yes, it is where the sport of rugby is named after - more specifically Rugby School, a famous private school.

Smoking areas in British trains were gradually abolished from the 1980s, the final ones going in 2005 (GNER and Caledonian Sleeper). I have a 2000 GB-wide timetable showing where smoking was still permitted. In some cases, the trigger for the ban was the move to air-conditioned stock that would result in the smoke circulating in the rest of the train.

A Gladstone bag was a rigid-framed small suitcase that could be opened into two equal halves, named as such due to its used by William Gladstone, four-time British Prime Minister, who would start his final ministry later in 1892.

The guard's van on passenger trains was generally a specific section of a carriage that also had a caged area for carrying luggage, parcels and caged small animals.

Willesden Junction is located in Harlesden, NW London. It no longer has any platforms on the West Coast Main Line, with Avanti and London Northwestern Railway trains going straight past it. Its passenger service today is made up of London Overground Lioness line services from Euston to Watford Junction, Overground Mildmay line services from Stratford to Richmond or Clapham Junction and the Underground's Bakerloo Line from Harrow and Wealdstone to Elephant & Castle. The first and third share the same tracks, while the second operates, on lines shared with freight trains, on separate "High Level" platforms. There is a depot for Overground trains nearby.

Non-gangwayed stock i.e. carriages with no connection between them even for emergency use, continued to be built into the British Railways, with quite a few of the "first generation" of diesel and electric multiple units being built this way. Most got gangways in later refurbishments, but the Class 205 DEMU, bar one example (205205) altered in a refurbishment trial, would carry on without them until final withdrawal in 2004. Most of the survivors then promptly ended up in the hands of heritage railways.

The Bible Society of London was founded in 1804 with the aim of providing affordable Bibles in people's own languages, after the 1800 case of a woman called Mary Jones, who saved up for six years then walked 26 miles to buy a Bible in Welsh. It is still active today.

The London to Rugby line had been widened to four tracks in the 1870s. From west to east, the tracks go: Down (Northbound) Fast - Up (Southbound) Fast - Down Slow - Up Slow. A bunco-steerer is a swindler.

Green goodsmen operated a scam in which people were offered purportedly counterfeit notes printed using stolen plates (so appearing genuine) at a cheap price, being shown actually genuine notes in a bag. During negotiation, the bag was switched for one containing worthless goods, like sawdust or green paper. Having been duped out of real money, the victims were reluctant to report this to police as attempting to purchase fake money was illegal.

Card-sharping is cheating at cards using various means, including cutting bits of cards to mark the ones you would want. Vegas casinos frequently deliberately cut corners off used cards being sold to tourists to prevent them being snuck into their games.

Tammany refers to Tammany Hall, the corrupt political machine that had ran New York City, for much of the 19th century, leveraging support from Irish immigrants by providing them with jobs for example. It had been temporarily ousted from power after the Lexow Commission of 1894-95 into police corruption; to wit, promotions were being sold for large sums of money and officers got that through extracting protection money from brothels etc. However, it would come back in the 1898 elections and retain control with occasional breaks until 1961, when Carmine DeSapio was ousted as its leader. It then lost power and had gone by 1967.

Travelling salespeople would carry samples or models of their products on their trips, sometimes in branded containers. This has largely become a thing of the past, but is still around.

Northumberland Avenue used to have a lot of high-class hotels, but these have mostly gone. Some were taken over for government use for a while, including by the War Office.

"Mary Jane" appears to have been a slang term for a male prostitute; Mary Jane Kelly was the final victim of Jack the Ripper.

📍 Giuseppe Pinelli, nicknamed Pino, was born 21st October 1928 in the working class neighbourhood of Porta Ticinese in Milan. He worked from a young age as an errand boy, and then later as a warehouse worker. In 1944-45 as a teenager he operated as a courier for an anarchist partisan group operating in the Milan area. Despite having to work at an early age he managed to educate himself by reading hundreds of books.

📍 Mario Mantovani had set up the paper Il Libertario, organ of the Federazione Comunista Libertaria Lombarde in 1945 in Milan and managed to gather together some of the surviving old comrades. Il Libertario appeared at first as a weekly and then as a bimonthly up to 1961. Giuseppe was one of a handful of young people who gravitated towards the grouping.

📍 In 1954 Giuseppe got employment on the railways as a fitter. The following year he married Licia Rognini, who he had met on an Esperanto evening course.

📍 The 1960s saw the steady growth of the Milanese anarchist movement, which accelerated after 1968. This was in no small way due to Giuseppe who organised young anarchists in the Gioventu Libertaria (Libertarian Youth) in 1963. Two years later he was one of those who founded the Sacco and Vanzetti Circle who founded a local centre which remained open for the next decade. In 1968 with the end of that circle he founded the Ponte della Ghisolfa Circle (named after the nearby bridge) on 1st May. The group organised a series of conferences and student meetings and assemblies. The circle and Pino were also involved in some of the first initiatives around the base union CUB. Pino also worked for the reconstruction of the anarcho-syndicalist union USI.

📍 He organised the library of the circle making sure the hundreds of books were all bound in black, classified and arranged. On Sundays the circle’s centre welcomed the older comrades, some aged 90 and some even older!

📍 On 25 April 1969 fascists initiated a series of bomb attacks as part of the Strategy of Tension which involved the manipulation of the Italian secret services working together with the US's CIA. Some Milanese anarchists were arrested as part of a scheme to discredit the anarchist movement. Pino organised support for the imprisoned anarchists (who were finally acquitted in June 1971). He brought food parcels, clothing and books to the prison. At the same time he began to organise the Crocenera Anarchica (Anarchist Black Cross) as a prisoner's support and counter-information network.

📍 Pino had attracted the attention of the police and in the aftermath of the December 1969 bombing at Piazza Fontana (where 16 people were killed by fascists) he was arrested and taken to the central police station to be interrogated by Calabresi and his henchmen. On the evening of 15th December he "fell" from the 4th floor of the police station. The police maintained that he accidentally went through the window of his own accord, but the official story was so full of holes, an entire play was written by Dario Fo debunking it.

The state murder of Pinelli set off a wave of protests. 1000 people attended his funeral on 20 December 1969. Later Nobel Prize-winner Dario Fo wrote his play Accidental Death of An Anarchist about Pinelli’s murder.

📍 3 policemen, who were interrogating Pinelli, including Commissioner Luigi Calabresi, were put on trial for his death, but his death was ruled as an accident. Calabresi was mysteriously gunned down in the street a few years later.

📍 In 2001 a new investigation found 3 members of a Neo Fascist group responsible for the bombing that Pinelli had been detained for.

Plot summary (adapted from Wikipedia):

George and her cousin Anne are spending their holiday at Captain Johnson's Riding School [la ferme de M. et Mme Girard], where George has a rivalry with another tomboy named Henrietta [Paulette], who prefers to be called "Henry" [Paul(e)] . Anne's brothers Julian and Dick come to join the girls and initially mistake Henry for a boy, much to George's chagrin.

Amidst horse rides on the moor, the Five encounter a group of gypsies determined to visit a desolate place called Mystery Moor [la Lande du Mystère].

An elderly blacksmith tells the children how gypsies, in the past, sabotaged a railway run by a family of sand miners, causing most of the family to mysteriously disappear when the moor was covered by a thick mist.

The Five follow the gypsies to the moor, following signs left by Sniffer as well as the old railway tracks formerly used by the sand miners mentioned by the old blacksmith. They also find the old train engine formerly used by the miners, half buried in the sand and overgrown with heather and gorse.

On their first night camping on the moor, the Five hear a plane circling low over the area. Intrigued, they figure out over the next day that the gypsies had arranged a signal for the plane. The plane comes back the next night and drops several packages that the Five collect, discovering that they contain smuggled American banknotes, later revealed to be forgeries from France [England 🙃].

The Five decide to flee and hide the parcels before the travellers come to retrieve them. Unfortunately, a heavy mist falls on the moor and the kids get separated. The boys manage to hide the parcels in the old train engine while the girls lose their way and are taken prisoners and held in a cave. Thanks to Timmy, George manages to send a message to their friends Henry and William at the riding school.

Henry and William come to the girls' rescue with Sniffer’s assistance, while Dick and Julian, after an uncomfortable night on the foggy moor, finally find their way back to the riding school, where Mrs Johnson was just calling the police. Thankful for Sniffer’s help, George promises to reward him with a red bicycle and living in a house with a family.

5 Dead, 25 Injured as Kanchanjunga Express Collides with Goods Train in Bengal; Rescue Operations Underway

At least five people were killed and 25 others injured on Monday when the Sealdah-bound Kanchanjunga Express collided with a goods train in West Bengal’s New Jalpaiguri.Reports indicate that three coaches at the back of the Kanchanjunga Express derailed between Neechbari and Rangapani stations, part of the Indian Railways’ Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) zone, due to the impact of the collision. The derailment caused the coaches to fall to the side. Heavy rain in Siliguri since the morning has hampered rescue efforts to free the trapped passengers.“Five people, including the loco pilot of the Kanchanjunga Express, died on the spot. Twenty-five people are injured. We are trying to rescue those stuck. The local people are very helpful,” said Abhishek Roy, Additional SP, Kurseong, who is at the accident site.The accident, occurring on the main rail link from Kolkata to Siliguri, has disrupted long-distance train services, officials said.Railways Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw told The Indian Express that the derailed coaches were parcel coaches. According to their information, there were two casualties. “A goods train overshot and collided with the Kanchanjunga Express. Rescue operations are in full swing,” said Vaishnaw, who is monitoring the situation from the war room in Delhi.In a post on X, Vaishnaw stated that rescue operations are “going on at war footing” and that Indian Railways, the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) are “working in close coordination.” The injured are being transported to hospitals, and senior officials have reached the accident site, he added.

📍 Giuseppe Pinelli, nicknamed Pino, was born 21st October 1928 in the working class neighbourhood of Porta Ticinese in Milan. He worked from a young age as an errand boy, and then later as a warehouse worker. In 1944-45 as a teenager he operated as a courier for an anarchist partisan group operating in the Milan area. Despite having to work at an early age he managed to educate himself by reading hundreds of books.

📍 Mario Mantovani had set up the paper Il Libertario, organ of the Federazione Comunista Libertaria Lombarde in 1945 in Milan and managed to gather together some of the surviving old comrades. Il Libertario appeared at first as a weekly and then as a bimonthly up to 1961. Giuseppe was one of a handful of young people who gravitated towards the grouping.

📍 In 1954 Giuseppe got employment on the railways as a fitter. The following year he married Licia Rognini, who he had met on an Esperanto evening course.

📍 The 1960s saw the steady growth of the Milanese anarchist movement, which accelerated after 1968. This was in no small way due to Giuseppe who organised young anarchists in the Gioventu Libertaria (Libertarian Youth) in 1963. Two years later he was one of those who founded the Sacco and Vanzetti Circle who founded a local centre which remained open for the next decade. In 1968 with the end of that circle he founded the Ponte della Ghisolfa Circle (named after the nearby bridge) on 1st May. The group organised a series of conferences and student meetings and assemblies. The circle and Pino were also involved in some of the first initiatives around the base union CUB. Pino also worked for the reconstruction of the anarcho-syndicalist union USI.

📍 He organised the library of the circle making sure the hundreds of books were all bound in black, classified and arranged. On Sundays the circle’s centre welcomed the older comrades, some aged 90 and some even older!

📍 On 25 April 1969 fascists initiated a series of bomb attacks as part of the Strategy of Tension which involved the manipulation of the Italian secret services working together with the US's CIA. Some Milanese anarchists were arrested as part of a scheme to discredit the anarchist movement. Pino organised support for the imprisoned anarchists (who were finally acquitted in June 1971). He brought food parcels, clothing and books to the prison. At the same time he began to organise the Crocenera Anarchica (Anarchist Black Cross) as a prisoner's support and counter-information network.

📍 Pino had attracted the attention of the police and in the aftermath of the December 1969 bombing at Piazza Fontana (where 16 people were killed by fascists) he was arrested and taken to the central police station to be interrogated by Calabresi and his henchmen. On the evening of 15th December he "fell" from the 4th floor of the police station. The police maintained that he accidentally went through the window of his own accord, but the official story was so full of holes, an entire play was written by Dario Fo debunking it.

The state murder of Pinelli set off a wave of protests. 1000 people attended his funeral on 20 December 1969. Later Nobel Prize-winner Dario Fo wrote his play Accidental Death of An Anarchist about Pinelli’s murder.

📍 3 policemen, who were interrogating Pinelli, including Commissioner Luigi Calabresi, were put on trial for his death, but his death was ruled as an accident. Calabresi was mysteriously gunned down in the street a few years later.

📍 In 2001 a new investigation found 3 members of a Neo Fascist group responsible for the bombing that Pinelli had been detained for.
