Rail Gangways Market Size - Key Players, Growth, Opportunities & Forecast 2027 | Credence Research
The latest market report published by Credence Research, Inc. Globally, the rail gangways market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 6.3% during the forecast period from 2019 to 2027.
As urban sprawl continues to manifest in the throbbing hearts of global metropolises, effective and safe public transportation becomes a linchpin in catering to escalating mobility needs. Amidst the multifaceted spectrum of transport modalities, railways stand out for their capacity, efficiency, and environmental friendliness, steering attention toward the Rail Gangways Market. These flexible connectors, instrumental in securing safe passages between rail cars, thus emerge as an integral component, bolstering safety, and enhancing the commuter experience.
The robustness of the rail gangways market is propelled by continuous urbanization and the burgeoning necessity to establish coherent and expansive public transportation networks. Rail gangways, responsible for ensuring smooth, secure transitions between train carriages, assume a critical role in optimizing the safety and functionality of rail transport. They not only safeguard passengers during inter-carriage movement but also seal the spaces between carriages, mitigating risks and protecting onboard systems from external elements.
Simultaneously, the technological evolution and innovation underpinning the rail industry augment the development within the rail gangways market. Modern gangways are now expected to meet diversified needs, extending beyond mere safety and encompassing aspects like ease of maintenance, durability, and the capacity to integrate with varied carriage designs. Thus, manufacturers in the market are propelled to innovate, melding materials science, engineering, and design to produce gangways that align with the contemporary and future demands of rail networks.

The town of Port Royal was crowded with men of different ilk the likes of which you had never seen. The Hangman had docked in the early hours of the morning, and once you had finished helping Bob prepare and serve breakfast, you had dragged the young man down the gangway and onto the street, heart hammering away with excitement.
“We can’t be gone too long,” Bob said, grinning at your clear excitement. “We have to be back in time to prepare supper.”
“What’s the point of traveling if we can’t even see the sights?” you scowled, pushing your way through the heavy throng of people around you. A few men gave you dirty looks as you did, but you paid them no mind. Men were rarely able to back up their bark with enough bite, in your experience, but you pressed onward without so much as a second glance at them.
“Pete, we are seeing the sights,” Bob chuckled behind you.
You turned to fix him with a scowl. “We’re seeing, but we aren’t appreciating. How can we when we only have a few hours?”
“I think you’re overestimating how much there is for us to do around here,” he laughed. You paid him no mind as you neared the market of the old pirate hub. Men bargained with each other at several of the different stalls, and groups of women were scattered along the streets looking for paying customers to share their bed for the evening.
“Ahoy, handsome,” a pretty redhead grinned at you as she leaned over the railing of the brothel. “You look like you’ve hardly reached manhood, and I don’t suppose you have much experience under your belt. Can I interest you in some lessons?”
“I, uh,” you stammered, blinking up at her nervously. “No, thank you, miss.”
“Shame,” she smirked, eyes looking behind you. “And what about you, sailor?”
You turned to see Bob looking as red as a tomato as he glanced nervously at you. “No, I’m fine.”
“Well, I’ll be here if either of you change your mind,” she grinned, tossing her long curls back to show off her ample cleavage. “Just ask for Lucy when you come back.”
“We’ll keep that in mind,” you blushed, hurrying to move forward with Bob hot on your tail. The two of you continued on a little farther until a glint of light caught your eye. You walked slowly up to the stall, several men grousing at you as you crossed right in front of their paths, but you paid them no mind. Your eyes were locked on a beautiful necklace that lay on top of a small wooden chest at one of the stalls. The golden chain held a six-pointed star, tiny diamonds encircling a burning opal. You had never seen something so beautiful before.
“I see you’ve found the soul of Polaris.”
You jumped, looking up to see an older man with a salt and pepper beard staring down at you. His accent was foreign, and if you had to guess, you’d say the man was from somewhere in Scotland.
“Is that what this is?” you asked him, looking back down at the jewel.
“Aye,” he continued, folding his arms. “They say a sea witch fell madly in love with a sailor long ago. When the two finally met face to face, the witch proclaimed her love for the man, but what she didn’t know is that the man was disgusted by her form. You see, the sea witch was also a mermaid, a siren of the sea. For while the witch was fair of face, the sailor knew what monster lay beneath the surface. So, he told her that he would only accept her love if she offered him something valuable.”
“And that was the gem?” you asked him, eyes wide. The old man chuckled with a shake of his head.
“No, lad. Wasn’t the gem,” he explained. “Was what the gem holds. There’s nothing more important to a sailor than the north star herself. Every man worth his salt knows that much. No, the gem holds an ancient magic. A magic to calm the sea and guide men to what it is they need most.”
“Which is what?”
“I don’t know,” he shrugged. “It’s different for every man.”
“Why are you selling it if it’s so valuable?” Bob chimed in, eyes narrowed at the man.
“Because it showed me that it’s time to pass it along, and I’m nothing if not a man who loves a proper sale,” he grinned. “Are ye interested?”
Before you could answer, Bob grabbed your elbow, pulling you away.
“No, we’re not,” he huffed out. You let out a cry of protest as he dragged you through the crowd. It wasn’t until the merchant faded from view that he finally slowed down, and you jerked your arm out of his hand.
“What was that about?” you griped, glaring up at him. He looked around the crowd wearily before shaking his head.
“Just didn’t like the look of him, is all.”
“Oh, that’s all?” You scoffed, crossing your arms. “What if I wanted to buy it?”
“Yeah?” Bob bit out a sharp laugh. “With what money?”
You were silent for a moment, and he nodded. “That’s what I thought.”
“You don’t have to be such an ass, you know,” you muttered, looking away dejectedly. You heard Bob sigh before he placed a hand gently on your shoulder.
“Look,” he began, “I’m sorry. I just don’t like anything having to do with magic or witches or anything of the sort.”
“Why’s that?” you asked him.
Bob didn’t answer you, instead looking somewhere off in the distance before grinning down at you.
“C’mon,” he said, once again pulling you through the crowd. “There’s something I want you to see.”
You allowed him to tug you along, the crowd thinning as the two of you moved closer to the edge of town. Finally, the cobblestone streets gave way to white sands and the stunning blue of the ocean. You felt your breath catch in your throat as you looked out onto the horizon. How you hadn’t noticed it when you departed the ship earlier, you didn’t know, but now your gaze was transfixed by it. This blue was so different from the blue you grew up seeing every day. Where your home’s waters were usually a dark, stormy blue, Port Royal’s water shined like topaz.
“I didn’t know the sea could look like this,” you breathed out.
“I knew you’d like it,” Bob smiled, turning his focus to the water before you. The two of you stood there in silence for a few moments before Bob turned to you once more. “C’mon, we best get back to the ship.”
“What’s all the commotion up there?” you asked Bob, hearing the stampede of footsteps above you on the main deck. Bob glanced up, a smile crawling onto his face.
“Sounds like they’re back aboard,” he grinned, rushing towards the door.
“Who is ‘they?’” you called after him, but he was already gone. You sighed, eyeing the ingredients for dinner before making your way after him. A crowd had gathered by the gangway, and you stopped at the edge where Bradley stood.
“What’s going on?” you asked him.
He shrugged. “Guess we’re here to pick up two other crew members from what I’ve gathered.”
You hummed, craning your neck to try and peer over the horde of men. You managed to catch a glimpse of two figures on the other side of the crowd; one man and one woman.
“Natasha!” You heard Bob cry. You saw the head of sandy hair bounce up to the woman who smiled at him. “How was it? How did it go?”
“Bob!” Natasha hollered as she pulled the young man in for a tight hug. “It’s good to see you. It was great!” She gestured to the man beside her. “You should have seen Mickey haggling with that old codfish! Thought we might get away without payin’ a cent there for a second. And then just when we had him, the codger backed out.”
She grimaced at the memory. “Couldn’t for the life of us figure out why he would back out at the last second. Just as we were headed back here though, he stopped us and offered another deal, one too good to pass up.”
“And so you took the deal.”
Everyone turned to see Jake, having just come from his quarters, at the edge of the crowd. He strutted towards the pair with a cocky smirk.
“You bet your ass we took that deal,” grinned the man, Mickey, as the captain approached. “We were leaving with it one way or another.”
“Lucky for the old man, he came to his senses,” smirked Natasha, arms crossing in front of her. Jake hummed as he stopped in front of them.
“And where is our little treasure?” he asked them. Mickey rifled through his pockets before pulling something out. The chain dropped to reveal a six-pointed star with tiny diamonds surrounding a burning opal. You gasped as Mickey handed the necklace over to Jake, who quickly pocketed it. He turned back to the rest of the crew.
“Alright, you lot. Show’s over. Get back to work! We set sail in an hour.”
The crew clambered to prepare the ship for launch, but you continued to stare at the small group on the other side of the ship.
“I’m going to freshen up in my quarters,” Natasha told the two with a smile, already making her way to where the cabins were housed. You gaped before looking over at Bradley.
“Bradley,” you hissed at him. Bradley swallowed thickly.
“She’s a woman.”
“Yeah.”
“She’s got a cabin on the ship.”
“Yeah.”
“She’s a member of the crew.”
He sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Yeah.”
Before you could say more, Bob had come bounding up to you. “Are you ready to get back to cooking?”
You shot one last glare at Bradley, who looked everywhere but back at you. That idiot.
“Yeah,” you grumbled, turning to head back into the hull. “I’m ready.”
“Why is that woman a member of the crew?” you asked Bob as you scrubbed at the pot in your hands. “I thought woman weren’t allowed on ships?”
“On most ships, yes,” he told you as he finished dishing out portions for the crew. “But Jake doesn’t really care who is crew is made up of as long as they carry their own weight and don’t cause any problems.”
You hummed. “So anyone can just join, huh?”
“I suppose,” he mused. “Jake doesn’t let anyone join the crew unless he thinks their worthy and have something to offer. A lot of men were skeptical when Nat first joined, but she quickly made a name for herself as the Phoenix.”
“The Phoenix?” you questioned, pausing your scrubbing to look at him. He nodded with wide, excited eyes.
“Yeah! Whenever we come upon a ship to plunder, she does this thing where she’ll light the ends of her coat on fire. It smolders, giving her this terrifying look like she just rose out of the flames. That’s why, ya know…”
“The Phoenix,” you finished for him, turning back to your work. “Do you all have nicknames like that?”
“Some of us, sure,” he replied. “But our names work just fine. Now help me pass these out to the crew.”
You moved to help him and the two of you began taking the dishes out to where the crew had gathered around the massive tables.
“Cabin boy!”
You turned to see Natasha waving at you with a mug of ale.
“Come join us,” she grinned. You glanced at Bob who nodded.
“Go, I can get the rest,” he smiled. You nodded back at him and made your way over to where Natasha sat with Reuben and Mickey.
“Take a seat, cabin boy,” Natasha grinned, taking a sip of her ale. You did as she commanded, eyes darting between the three sailors as they stared at you.
“Is it true?” she asked you with a raised eyebrow.
“Is what true?”
“That your dad is Maverick Mitchell!” Mickey grinned, leaning in closer to you. A large figure slid in beside Reuben.
“What are we talking about?” Bradley asked, glancing between you and the other three.
“We were just starting to ask the cabin boy here about his father, Rooster” Reuben told him, taking a bite of his food. Bradley’s mouth set in a firm line as the three turned their attention back to you.
“What was he like?” Mickey asked you, practically bouncing in his seat. You shrugged noncommittally as you took a bite off your own plate.
“I don’t really know what you're expecting me to say.”
“Well, was he just as daring as the stories say? Did he take you out on his trips? Did you help him plunder? Did he ever find the treasure he was looking for?”
“Alright,” Natasha groaned, setting a calming hand down on his shoulder to stop him. Bob chose that moment to join the lot of you, sliding in next to her on the opposite side of the table. “Settle down, fanboy.”
“I can’t help it!” He hollered. “It’s not every day you meet the kid of one of the greatest pirates known to man.”
You stilled, seeing Bradley tense up on the other side of Reuben.
“What?” You whispered, eyes wide as you stared at Mickey who stared at you uncertainly.
“Pete Mitchell was your father,” Mickey said slowly, glancing around the table. “Right?”
“Yes, he was,” you said firmly.
“Pete Mitchell, better known as Maverick,” Reuben rattled off, “was a world renowned pirate of the highest order. His very name struck fear into the hearts of many a ship’s captain and crew. He was respected both far and wide by civilians and sailors alike.”
“Until one day he just disappeared,” Natasha added, studying you curiously. “Said his life’s mission was to find the greatest treasure the world could offer, and he plundered and stole for decades before dropping off the face of the earth.”
You felt like you were going to be sick. You didn’t know this man they were talking about. You knew the man who told you stories before bed, who showed you the proper ways to tie different knots, who always treated you kindly and had a smile at the ready for you, who never once raised his voice in anger at you or your mother. The man they were talking about was a stranger.
Without thinking, you grabbed the nearest cup to you, Natasha’s, and downed it. The ale did little to ease your comfort, and you grabbed Reuben’s next and did the same.
“Woah there, cabin boy,” Reuben called out as you reached for Mickey’s. “Slow down there.”
You didn’t want to slow down. You wanted to forget. You downed Mickey’s cup and searched for more. The men to your right had watched the scene unfold, and one of them let out a low chuckle before pushing his cup towards you.
“There ya go, cabin boy!” He laughed. “Drink up!”
You happily obliged him, downing the nearly full mug in only a couple of gulps. You stood, head already beginning to feel both light and heavy all at the same time. You had never had more than one cup of ale before, but you weren’t worried about that fact in that moment. You stumbled on your feet as you made to move towards the barrel that had been opened for that night’s dinner.
“No,” Bradley said from behind you, having gotten up when you did. “You’ve had enough.”
You whirled around to face him, nearly falling on your face in the process. “I’ll decide when I’ve had enough,” you hissed up at him, trying and failing to push past him as he gripped your arms.
“That’s enough,” he growled down at you, but you continued to push at him until he gave you a gentle shake. “I know you’re upset, but this is not how you should be handling it.”
You stared up at him, studying him. Why was he being so calm about this revelation that had just been dropped into your lap?
“You knew,” you breathed, tears pooling in the corners of your eyes. “You knew, and you didn’t tell me.”
Bradley stiffened, hands tightening ever so slightly on your shoulders. He looked defeated as he let out a sigh. “He didn’t want you to know.”
“Bastard!” you screamed at him, your struggle renewing with a vengeance.
“What’s going on here?”
All of you stopped and turned. Javy stood at the end of the stairs, eyes scanning the room and the scene before him. He frowned when he saw the state you were in.
“Cabin boy,” he said slowly, eyes always studying you. “Go get some air.”
You took a breath before pushing at Bradley who stumbled back half a step. You staggered toward the stairs, hearing Javy address the crew. You didn’t hear what he said, too focused on making it up to the main deck.
The air had grown cool as the sun began to set, and you staggered towards the edge of the boat. You grasped onto one of the ropes, feeling your resolve start to break. The tears started to fall and you let out a shaky sob into the wind.
“Rough night, cabin boy?”
You turned, vision hazy from the ale, to see Jake standing a few feet away from you.
“What do you care?” You muttered, frowning at him. He let out a low chuckle before walking over to lean against the side of the ship next to you. The two of you stared at one another for a few moments, but said nothing.
“He was a pirate,” you whispered, almost inaudibly, the tears still flowing down your cheek. Jake nodded.
“Aye,” he said. “He was.”
“But he was a good man,” you frowned, more of a question than a statement. Jake cocked an eyebrow at you.
“Can’t a man be both?”
You shrugged, head starting to feel even heavier. “I suppose so.”
Jake let out another chuckle, leaning into you a little more. “You suppose so?” he teased.
“Yeah,” you nodded sleepily. “S’pose so.”
Jake reached up to cup your cheek as he watched you. “How much did you have to drink down there tonight, Guppy?”
“D’unno,” you muttered, subconsciously nuzzling into the palm of his hand. “More than I’ve ever ha’ before.”
The two of you stood in silence for a moment before your eyes shot open, staring at him. What did he just call you?
Jake watched you with a knowing smirk as you struggled to form a coherent thought through the alcohol induced haze.
“You catchin’ up there alright, Guppy?” he asked you, a grin breaking out over his face.
“How long have you-?”
“Since you walked up to the ship behind Rooster, sweet girl. You think I’d just forget a pretty face like yours?” he laughed as you scowled up at him.
“Why didn’t you say anything?” you snapped.
He shrugged. “Figured things would be much more interesting this way. Besides, you looked so cute thinkin’ you had fooled me into thinkin’ you were a boy. Wanted to see how long you’d play into it.”
“So why bother saying anything?” You grumbled. His grin dropped as he stared at you with a stern expression.
“Cause you went and did a stupid thing like gettin’ too drunk. Now I gotta worry ‘bout you ‘round some of these men.”
“You don’t trust your own men?” You asked him, eyebrow raised. He chuckled lowly, placing a large, warm hand to the small of your back.
“While I believe they aren’t stupid enough to try anything with me or your brother on board the ship, I’d sleep much better tonight havin’ not taken the chance.”
“Wait,” you said, his words catching up with you. “They know?”
Jake laughed at that. “Darlin’, everyone knew the moment you set foot on the ship. That brother of yours needs to work on his disguises.”
You scowled up at him as he helped you towards the cabins. He beamed down at you, eyes twinkling, and you could have sworn you saw a blue mist twirl in his pupils as he stared down at you.
“C’mon. You can bunk with Natasha from here on out.”

"Don't worry, I'll take care of you" - North60
Another prompt fill that I actually managed to get done? What?! Well, you're as surprised as I am. XD Anyway, I have no idea if this is even good or not but I guess I'll post it anyway. This is set vaguely as the third piece in the North60 series I intend to write. (The first part of it is published already but I've been working on the second for a long time and it's still not done. >_<) So if anyone is a bit OOC, just blame it on some intended character growth that's already theoretically happened, lol. So yeah... here's to the very few of you out there who love this ship as much as I do. Enjoy? 😅
butterflies around the flame
"Don't worry, I'll take care of it."
Sixty pauses, looking over to North as she sidles up beside him on the gangway. She wears her expression of steely determination just as fittingly as her slightly-singed tactical suit and Sixty can’t help the small burst of assurance both sights inspire in him despite his current irascibility. His scanners pick up a myriad of weapons on her person, knives and guns and batons and tasers, and it soothes some basic part of his coding that crows at him to keep her safe. She can look out for herself. Hell, she can look out for him too if the way she's muttered that phrase several times over the course of their friendship is anything to go by. Time and again she's looked out for him, vouching for him to her friends, taking him on as her second-in-command in the security corps, mediating disputes he manages to get himself involved in, etc.
And here and now too, apparently, she's decided to shoulder the responsibility for his actions. Even as he stares, she nods her head down to the burnt edges of his jacket and trousers, waving a lazy hand to the entirety of his ash-encompassed form. "I’m serious, I’ll talk to them. You did what you had to and I'll make sure Markus knows it. Losing one building is better than what would've happened without the distraction."
Sixty frowns, doing his best to nonchalantly lean against the metal railing as he peers down at the gathered deviants below. The deviants he had done his best to save during the pandemonium. The deviants who stood huddled and scared and singed because of his stupid plan. They were lucky... Lucky to make it out. No thanks to him.
"I could've taken the humans down myself," he says eventually, a scowl crawling its way across his face. "Far less collateral damage. Quick and efficient. You know I could've, North." He snaps his gaze back towards her. "This could've killed them." He nods his head towards the crowd below. "I could've killed them. And for what? A crazed mob of humans hellbent on destroying us?"
North shakes her head. "But you didn't kill them. You didn't kill anybody, Sixty. We have you to thank for everyone making it out alive. Even the humans." Her words are soft but her eyes shine brightly, that same righteous anger burning through them as courses through his Thirum lines. She's just as upset about the attack as he is. He knows this. After all, she'd been on guard when it all went down, too. She'd heard his transmissions, understood what he was planning. She'd led the evacuation of New Jericho personally and perfectly in sync with him springing his trap. And now, huddled in an abandoned warehouse near the wreckage of the original Jericho freighter, the harried android population coming full-circle in the worst of ways, they are the only two who can explain the full situation to Markus.
Somehow, just knowing how incandescently angry North is about all of this is enough to stabilize his systems a bit, his dangerously high stress levels sinking back down to a more moderate rate. "Well, can't have His Leaderness getting all up in arms with me for snuffing out a few organics, now can we? Not after last time."
North snorts, the sound inelegant and coarse, and Sixty feels his stress levels sinking even more. But when she looks up at him, she is far from amused, her eyes burning with resolve as a wicked, cruel smile teases the edges of her lips. "Your restraint is admirable, Six. Can't say I wouldn't have taken the shot if I were in your place."
Here in the dim light, her uniform practically fades into the darkness. Her vibrant hair is tied back and hidden, her hands are gloved, her face is cast in shadows. Every part of North is dimmed and defeated, even her muttered words wreathed in fury and despair.
But even with her glaring down at the assembly like an avenging angel, her palpable fury emanating from her like a physical thing, Sixty can't help but scoff. "You wouldn't." He smirks as her eyes snap back to his, the challenge in her gaze masking the vulnerability underneath. "You wouldn't take the shot," he says again. "You wanna know how I know?"
Hesitantly, she nods, enough suspicion in her gaze to make him cackle. (Which he does. Loudly.)
Sixty reaches out and takes her hand, giving her his own crooked, slightly deranged smile in return. "It's because I didn’t. And that’s because of you." He squeezes her hand, the pulse of her Thirium lines under the sensitive sensors of his fingertips as mesmerizing as it is reassuring. "You've always been better than you seem to think you are. You wouldn't take a life if there was another option. That's never been you, even at your lowest." He chuckles softly. "You always protect. Even when you hate someone or something, you always try to find the best option. You 'take care of things'. That's how I came to be here in the first place, isn't it?"
North's grip is firm in his own as he flashes her another grin and Sixty can feel it, the way she retracts her skin even with the barrier of cloth between them. Without thought, without care, he reciprocates, letting his own Thirium coating recede back into the magnetized nodes dotting his chassis. The two of them sink into the interface, the low hum of each other's minds a sweet and soothing backdrop to the chaos all around them. The interface is only surface level, not deep enough to be anything other than an awareness of each other, but it is enough to magnify North's words through his whole self as she speaks: "But I never hated you. Not like them."
Sixty merely laughs. "But you should've."
And there is no contestation. She knows as well as he the sins of his past. But she's never judged him for them, not once. It's perhaps what he loves most about her, her willingness to accept his flaws. Even here and now, with the ashes of their people's dreams upon his body, she never once hesitated to accept him. It's enough to incite a 0.33 second timing fluctuation in the steady beat of his Thirium pump. The error message that accompanies it is a familiar friend in her presence these days.
In the warmth of their interface, Sixty continues on: "But you know as well as I do that you don't need to like someone to do the right thing." He spares a brief moment to think of his hallowed predecessor and the complicated relationship between them.
North nods. "Yeah, I... I know, Six. I know." She glances up at him through her eyelashes. "When the hell did you end up the voice of reason?"
Sixty snorts out a laugh. "I have my moments."
Her smile is genuine this time as she stares up at him. "You sure do."
And though his records will later tell him that this moment lasted less than a second, Sixty swears they stare at each other for an eternity. Time slows as if his preconstruction software has started up, each prolonged moment a gift for his harried system. And when at last they draw apart, breaking the shallow interface at last, they both do so with a smile and severely diminished stress level.
"Alright, I still need to explain things to Markus and Josh and Simon," North reiterates. "I'm sure they're here somewhere."
Sixty nods. "Yeah, they're over in that corner," he says, pointing.
North's scandalized face is enough to have him laughing again. "Sixty! You knew they were here all along?!"
"Of course," he laughs, "I've got the best scanners on the market. They've been here the whole time. They've been delegating or something, I'm not sure."
"Why didn't you say something!"
"Well quite frankly, I needed a moment. And then you needed a moment. And then we were having a moment, so..."
"Ugh, I can't believe you! I need to go. Now."
But before she can walk off, Sixty sidles in front of her. "Whoa whoa whoa, I think you mean we need to go. Right?"
She stares at him, uncomprehending.
"Okay, lemme put it to you this way then," he chuckles. "We will go explain my actions to the Big Boss. Then we can check on the security team and see if they're still doing alright. And then we can go find a quiet spot where we can try and beat the shit out of each other for a bit. Y'know. Let off some steam. Relax." He gives her a wink and revels in how her lips twitch at the sight.
"...You wouldn't insist if you hadn't already made up your mind, huh?" She doesn't even wait for him to confirm it before continuing, "Well, alright. Because that... That sounds good, Six.” North says. And then quieter, as if she was speaking only to herself, she mutters, “What would I ever do without you?"
Her whispered question rings sincere through Sixty's audio processor. He saves the soundbyte for further review and answers, "You'd take care of things. You always do."
And she smiles, so soft and sweet that another Thirium pump error flashes across Sixty's HUD. "Yeah. I always do. But it’d be less fun without you here."
Sixty reaches out a hand again and thrills when she accepts it, the two of them walking together along the gangway down to where the rest of the Jericho leadership are stationed. He chuckles. “I knew you kept me around for something.” This time, it’s him who initiates, opening up another interface for them to connect with. North reciprocates immediately and it makes Sixty proud to feel how much calmer she is now. “But I don’t think you’ll have to worry about that. I pity the poor idiot who tries to make me leave now. You’d tear them apart.”
North’s eyes flash, a sinister gleam accompanied by another cruel grin. “I’d 'take care of them'.”
Sixty barks out a hearty laugh, so enamored, so proud. “And I'll take care of you."
She chuckles right back and squeezes his hand, a steady warmth pulsing through their connection. "And maybe I'd even let you." And with eyes facing forward with renewed determination, she pulls him along with her towards their goal. “Now come on, Security Officer. There’s work to be done.”

So He’s the Captain?
This is just a little Distant Shores Drabble that I wanted to write before the release of tonight’s chapter... it’s nothing special, but I felt like writing it.
Edit: I did like that chapter, but I just feel as though it may have gone differently... if the Navy were after them, then they’d be hot on their heels!
Pairing: Edward x F!MC (Clara)
Tagging: @vanillamaa @bloodboundismylife @elinechoices @octobereighth @adrianadmirer @fallendarkangel693 @chaotic-pixie
Word Count: 1′590 ish
Summary: This takes place right after the events of Chapter 7... it’s not great, but it was worth a shot!
‘You’re a…what?’
Clara remains motionless, staring back at the man before her, her eyes widening with befuddlement. Before she has a chance to speak, he draws her further into the alley; his voice is calming, yet his words have a slight urgency to them.
‘I cannot repeat it,’ he glances around, ensuring that they are alone before continuing, ‘if anyone else finds out who I am, then I am most likely a dead man.’
‘Well, I haven’t killed you yet…and I’ve had plenty of chances to!’
‘Please Clara,’ he chuckles softly, shaking his head in amusement, ‘I may have only known you for no more than an hour or two, but you do not exactly strike me as the killing sort.
She fixes her gaze on him, her arms slowly folding across her chest as she regards him with curiosity.
‘So, you’re a Lieutenant?’
He responds with a curt nod.
‘You don’t look like you belong in the Navy.’
‘That is because I have been trying to blend in,’ he looks back up at her, tilting his head in intrigue, ‘was it enough to fool you?’
She scoffs, regarding him with a bemused smile.
‘Not in the slightest.’
He shrugs, reaching up to adjust his hat.
‘I thought not; I told the Admiral that I would need to wear something a lot more convincing.’
‘You’ve spoken to the Admiral?’
‘Not as much as I would like, if I am being honest,’ he runs a gentle hand across the sleeve of his shirt, tugging at the hem, ‘though he did make the time to give me some advice as to what would be appropriate for a Pirate to wear.’
‘And he settled on… that?’
He smiles at her in admiration, his voice taking a curious tone.
‘I am guessing that you are not fond of my attire?’
‘Well, it’s not exactly one that I would -’
‘CLARA!’
The pair turn their attention to the east, their eyes settling on a familiar figure as she rushes towards them, her hand clasped tightly around the hilt of her sword. Clara takes a step forward, her expression one of confusion as she sees the panic in her eyes.
‘Charlie? Is everything…’
‘We need to leave,’ she grabs hold of Clara’s arm, tugging her in the direction of the port, ‘most of the crew are onboard already.’
‘Most of the crew…?’ She stops short, glancing back at Oliver, her wariness evident in her eyes, ‘who… who isn’t?’
‘It is just us and Edward,’ she pulls on Clara’s sleeve, forcing her forward, ‘now we really must go!’
‘But why isn’t Edward on board? Shouldn’t he already -’
‘Why do you think?’ She exclaims with suddenness, keeping a watchful eye over her shoulder, ‘he has spent the past twenty minutes looking for you!’
‘Me?’
‘Yes! Now we really must go…’
She leads Clara out into the open, their gazes swiftly darting from the market square to the port, where they catch sight of Edward; he stands amidst a group of travelers, discreetly bowing his head as if to avoid suspicion, but it isn’t long before he catches Clara’s eye. He pushes through the crowd, making his way towards them. Charlie sighs in frustration, addressing Clara through gritted teeth.
‘That man is going to get himself killed if he is not careful.’
‘Can’t you tell him to stay back?’
She scoffs, shaking her head.
‘When Edward sees something he wants, then he does whatever he can to possess it,’ she regards him with a scowl as he presses forward, ‘and in this case it is you, Love.’
‘Edward?’
They turn to look at Oliver, who remains exactly in the spot where he was previously standing; he watches Clara closely, his brows narrowing in recognition as he studies her face.
‘As in Edward Mortemer… the Captain of Poseidon’s Revenge?’
Clara’s eyes begin to widen, the realisation of the severity of this encounter starting to weigh on her. She tries to speak, desperately hoping that she can form a coherent sentence, but before she is able to say anything, a pair of hands settle on her waist, pushing her forward and further down the path.
‘Come ON, Clara!’
Charlie leads her across the street, narrowly avoiding a couple of market vendors as they try desperately to hide their possessions from view. The pair make a run for it, heading in the direction of Edward and the ship; Clara glances back at the alley, as if trying to locate the man she was with moments before, but is met with an empty space, devoid of any persons or sources of light. However, as she turns to refocus on the route that she is travelling, she manages to collide with someone; she loses her balance, but before she has the chance to hit the ground, a pair of strong hands take hold of her upper arms, gently steadying her. Winded and slightly embarrassed, she looks down at her feet, her cheeks turning a shade of crimson. She begins to stutter, her words clumsy and ill-timed.
‘Oh, I… I’m sorry!’
‘There is no need to apologise, Miss Bellamy.’
She looks up at the sound of his voice, his tone and address somewhat familiar; Edward stands before her, an amused smile tugging at the corner of his lips. He reaches forward, brushing a stray strand of hair behind her ear.
‘Are you quite alright?’ He regards her with curiosity, ‘you seem to be rather out of sorts…’
She chuckles nervously, her breathing frantic and laboured.
‘That tends to happen when the Navy turn up and start wrecking the joint!’
‘Wrecking the…’ he shakes his head in puzzlement, ‘I may not understand what you have just said, but I am guessing it is in reference to our unwanted company and their untoward behaviour when it comes to other people’s property.’
A distant shout can be heard from the tavern, the harrowing sound of heavy boots following shortly after. Clara looks back over her shoulder, her voice laden with guilt and concern.
‘Sh…shouldn’t we go back and help them?’ She turns back to face him, ‘the people in the tavern…’
He shakes his head.
‘They would want us to go.’
‘But what if they’re being hurt?’ She queries, the intonation in her voice rising, ‘I thought that… I thought that you and your crew protected them?’
‘We do,’ Charlie interjects, placing her sword back into its sheath, ‘but how can we protect them if we are imprisoned? How can we provide them with coins or food if we are dead and buried?’
‘But -’
‘Charlie is right, Clara,’ he takes her hand in his, giving it a comforting squeeze as his fingers entwine with hers, ‘the best thing that we can do for them now is to leave port.’
‘And leave them defenseless?’
‘Once the British know that we are no longer here, then they will return to their ships and try their best to follow us.’
‘How do you know that?’
‘Because I know the Admiral,’ his stoic expression soon dissipates, swiftly replaced by a mischievous grin, ‘and he is not one to let his spoils get away.’ He hastily glances up at the ship before returning his attention to Clara, his voice firm and somewhat urgent, ‘now we really must be on our way!’
He starts towards the gangway, his grip on her hand tightening as he pulls her along, ensuring that she does not fall behind. Once they are there, he gestures for Charlie to climb aboard before spinning on his heel to face Clara.
‘It may be some time before we leave port,’ he places a gentle hand on the small of her back, ‘I need you to remain in my quarters.’
‘But what about you?’
‘I’ll be alright, Miss Bellamy,’ he flashes her a brazen smile, ‘but my priority is keeping you safe.’
‘From the Admiral?’ She furrows her brows, her voice quiet and full of worry, ‘but you said that he wouldn’t be -’
‘He should not,’ he shakes his head, ‘but one cannot be too careful.’ He reaches towards her, his hand inching close to her cheek, but it is not long before he pulls away, averting her gaze. ‘Now, get on the ship, Miss Bellamy.’
‘But Edward -’
‘That is an order, Clara,’ he retorts with sternness, his eyes blazing with anger and uncertainty, ‘I will not ask you again.’
He forces her further up the gangway, gesturing for Charlie to guide her back onto the ship. At first, Clara is reluctant, but as she turns back, she is met by Edward’s expectant gaze.
‘NOW, Miss Bellamy!’
She does as instructed, turning sharply towards the deck of the ship, but as she draws nearer, the sound of begotten footsteps gets louder, followed by a familiar voice emerging from the shadows.
‘Do NOT let him get away!’
Oliver stands by the end of the dock, pointing in the direction of the Captain; his men advance on Edward, who remains steady on the deck below, his hand clasped tightly around the hilt of his sword. As the men draw closer, he removes his sword from its sheath, adjusting himself into a defensive position. Clara’s gaze drifts between them. She clambers onto the ship, clumsily holding onto the railings as she beckons Edward from above, her voice frantic and shaken.
‘EDWARD!’
The Lieutenant looks to the ship, scanning for the source of the commotion, but as his gaze befalls the owner of the voice, his face begins to pale, the rosiness in his cheeks now non-existent.
‘C...Clara?’

[TEASER]
kim seokjin/reader
genre: mermaid/pirate au, pirate seokjin, mermaid y/n, romance, angst, pinning
warning(s): crimes obvs., violence, minor character deaths, kidnapping, illegal hunting of mermaids, cursing, pirate banter
w.count: 1.2k [teaser]
Series | One-shot | Two-shot | Drabble [Rated: T]
summary: A band of pirates raising a mermaid is just a tall-tale; except for one pirate crew who takes the situation literally. After adopting a baby of the sea, they raise it as one of their own. The problem? Mermaids are only part of a wide branch of mythical creatures that are captured and sold. This crew has to keep her identity a secret and years later when she finds herself on the threshold of discovery, she’s scared to look to her crew- her family- for rescue. Not wanting to bring them down with her, she attempts to handle the situation on her own. However, her current captain and childhood friend won’t let her go in alone.
[Pro-tip: Seokjin + Y/n are both kids in this teaser lol]
He didn’t know if you even knew, but there was a reason he always asks you to keep your hair long as well. His father, the captain, had told him once that the scales on the back of your neck were the one thing a mermaid cannot conceal. That's why they always have long hair or hide it with scarves or high shirts on land. Those iridescent scales of yours were the one thing to give you away and instead of telling you to keep your hair long for safety, he had told you that he preferred it longer.
It wasn't a lie, per se. He did prefer your hair long, it was shiny and pretty like seashells. But he couldn’t just say that. Oh, no no no. Boys don’t compliment girls like that. Too embarrassing- he was a future captain! He had to be manly!
“I think dad said we’re docking in Neave tomorrow evening for shipment details and restock on items. We can sneak off the ship when everyone’s asleep and go swimming!” He whispered with the thrill of sneaking away from his parents- as he’s not supposed to- and going with you to swim and jeopardize your identity no less.
“You’re crazy,” you told him with a huffy eye roll. “Let’s do it,” you said, agreeing nonetheless with a smile.
You and Seokjin snuck around the ship like ants the following morning, scrambling to get chores and duties finished so you both could clear up the evening for your silent plan of some late night swimming practice. Your father Calvin, and Seokjin’s father, Captain Hillian watched with suspecting eyes as you both gathered at the quarterdeck of the ship with excited steps and hushed giggles as the port of Neave approached closer with each wave.
The moment the ship eased into port and the gangway was pushed from deck to port, you and Seokjin dashed off, sprinting down the spine red wooden board and jumping onto the deck. Seokjin wobbling as he took a few test steps, not used to the ground beneath his feet not swaying on the ocean waves. The crew laughed at the two of you as you pushed Seokjin around, watching him lose his balance before attempting to chase you- a poor attempt at the very least. A patch of seaweed looked more appealing than his poor excuse for a walk cycle on land.
“Seokjin, Y/n!” You both paused your childish antics when you heard Captain Hillian’s low toned voice call behind the both of you. You both slowly turned as you saw he'd him lounging over the ships railing. “Don’t you both go causing trouble or else I’m going to be forced to have you both stay on board.” You winced as you remembered the last time you got forced to stay on board at port. You couldn’t even sneak off, the crew members watched you both like hawks.
“Yes, sir!” Seokjin shouted back before he slightly elbowed you- grinning to make sure you were still aware of the idea of swimming later. A sign of ‘no take backs’ he locked you in. He grabbed your elbow before he bolted into town. You both had been here a few times before, so that helped navigate down the dusty roads.
He finally stopped zipping around and let go of your arm he had nearly yanked off of your shoulder. He turned to you, looking behind you and around to make sure no pirates followed. He got closer to you in excitement, you could see stars in his eyes.
“I took some coins from my dad's dresser top,” he started as he showed the small leather bound pouch on his belt. “We can get some pears or something to eat! I hear they imported some from overseas in the west and they’re way better than apples!”
“Seokjin! You took coins from the captain?! If he finds out, he’s gonna tie you to the mast and tell by the way you scream when a violent wave is coming!” You hushly scolded as he just waved it off.
“It was just a few, it’s not like he’ll go bankrupt or something because he left money laying around. He had it coming! Besides,” he sprung up a finger in his case, “he’s more likely to dangle me from the crows nest.” He stated as he started sauntering off.
“That’s not any better!” You chased him with a stupid grin on your face- the idea of him hanging from above as he kicked and panicked a bit too amusing. Following his jokester back into the market, he finally grabbed your hand, a wave of anxiousness flooding him when he finally remembered that you were a mermaid in disguise. He just smiled, making you promise not to run off and keep a hold of his hand.
Just as he said, he walked to a fresh fruit stand and felt around for a perfect, soft pear of the lightest shade of green he could find. Tossing a few coins to the seller, he took a bite, shocked at how sweet and soft it tasted. When he held it out for you, you took a bite of the opposite side of the fruit, just as astonished.
You both boasted about how you needed to convince the crew to stock up on a few of them, maybe serve them with the fish you ate constantly. Of course, you’d have to do so without spilling the beans about taking the Captain’s money. You both were sat on a pile of abandoned crates for longer than you both realized until a crew member came and found you both by chance. The sun was starting to dip and he advised you to head back to the ship before the Captain or Calvin throws a fit.
For a pirate and adoptive father figure, Calvin was fairly protective over you and your well being. He didn’t really seem to care that you were a mermaid and the Captain had told you time and time again that he treated you like you were his own flesh and blood. You and Seokjin began to climb up the steep gangway of the ship as crew mates passed you by.
Calvin stopped you before you re-boarded the ship. Clapping your shoulder and rocking you back and forth with a strong, firm grip of a father.
“Now, you behave and stay on board while we’re out,” he told you with a small smile. He hated to admit it to your small, childish face, but you knew that ‘out’ meant he and the rest of the men were going to visit a pub and get what action they could for a night and a pretty penny. You nodded at him. “Don’t let Seokjin drag you around either. Do you understand, Sweet Pea?”
“Yes, I do,” you curled your teeth in as you wet your lips trying not to smile. Smiling while looking at your father is a dead giveaway that you’re lying. A skill he’s teaching you, but can see right through. As a pirate and member of this crew, you were being taught all the skills as Seokjin and the other men.
Lying, theft- of large and petty crimes- combat, negotiation, even navigation. Of course, you had no interest in navigation until Seokjin called a strike and refused to learn it unless you learned it with him. However, once you began and started charting stars and learning about the seas and maps, you were so glad his pettiness made you start. You enjoyed it.

Living of Love
Ava returns home and enjoys the blissful joy of being surrounded by her family.
Word Count: 1958
Content Warnings: None. This fluff is my apology for traumatizing you with feels last night.
The first thing to greet Ava when she strode down the gangway and into the hangar was the sight of Poe running to her, absolutely beaming, his smile uncontrollable as he scooped her up, his arms snug around her waist, his lips meeting hers without a word. She giggled into his kiss, feeling him smiling, and hooked her arms behind his neck. He smelled like he’d just showered, the smell of foresty soap lingering on his skin. His shirt was clean and ironed, in fact, it looked new, not at all worn like the ones she knew in the drawers of their bedroom dresser. He’d even shined his boots.
“Welcome home, Mrs. Dameron,” he grinned, his eyes opening slightly, joy lines still radiating from their corners. His lips brushed lightly against hers again before he pressed his forehead to hers.
“Thank you, General Dameron,” she snickered.
He lowered her to her feet with care but didn’t relinquish his hold on her. He kept her close with his left arm around her waist while his right hand stroked her cheek before pushing into her hair. No one bothered them despite the fact that the hangar was abuzz with activity. A few of the newer people stared for a moment, but more tenured members of the Resistance explained that was just how the General and his wife were and to ignore it. Ava’s team had their instructions to schlepp all of the supplies she’d bought at the market into the mess hall kitchen pantry where she would sort it out later.
“Did you get all dressed up for me?” She tugged lightly on the edges of his black leather jacket, the one that he’d chosen to replace the brown one he’d given to Finn. Even the scuffed, ragged leather had a shine of cleanliness to it that she had never seen before. “I was only gone for three days.”
“Three days alone with Ben Solo,” he stated, not angry or jealous, more playful than anything. “I didn’t want you coming home thinking you’d downgraded in settling for me.”
“Oh, stop it,” she laid a hand on either side of his face, kissing him deeply. When she finished he had both his eyes shut in bliss, a hint of pink in his cheeks, and his heart was thumping. “If I had it to do all over again, I’d still pick you,” she brushed her fingers into his curls and watched him tilt his head to her touch, his bright hazel eyes opening to study her intently.
“You’re sure?” He tried to pass his tone off as joking but Ava knew there were serious fears behind the question. He’d always felt he couldn’t compare to Ben. While his parents were war heroes and he had since made a name for himself as the successor to Leia’s legacy, he still felt those points of pride were nothing compared to the lineage and legacy Ben’s bloodline provided him. Ava wished she could settle in his mind once and for all that he wasn’t lacking in any way, but she didn’t mind reminding him regularly how wonderful he was. She liked complimenting him, genuinely telling how amazing she thought he was. She liked the bashful smile that always came from it.
“Ben asked me if he could be my second husband and I told him no,” Ava stated. She watched her husband’s jaw visibly slack and hang open in shock. “You’re the only husband I want and need,” she moved her hand back to his cheek and stroked it with her thumb before stepping away from him a little, plucking up her bag, taking him by the hand and pulling him towards the open hangar doors.
“But…wait,” he stammered, trying to process what she’d dropped on him. “He asked to be your second husband?”
“That’s right,” Ava nodded, breathing deeply the clean Spring air as they stepped outside, enjoying the familiar sounds of the native birds and the warm sunshine on her face.
“He didn’t ask you to leave me?” Poe sounded seriously confused and Ava wondered how long he’d fixate on the subject.
“No,” she shook her head, pausing in their walk so she could look at her husband face to face. “But no matter what he’d asked, I would’ve said no. I love you,” she smiled and gave his hand a squeeze. “You’re all I want and need.”
“You’re sure?” Poe raised a brow and looked seriously concerned.
“I’m absolutely sure,” Ava laughed. “Even if it was something I was remotely interested in, which it’s not,” she added emphasis on the not, just to make sure he got the point, “it would hurt you. And I love you too much to do anything that would cause you pain like that. Besides, the two of you couldn’t even share a toy ship without getting into fights over whose turn it was to play with it. I’d be crazy to put myself in the middle of that.”
“I love you,” Poe stated with genuine heart and a serious expression on his face.
“I know,” she smiled shyly, an intense blush heating her face. When he looked at her like that, the way he got all serious and intense, it made her feel something hard to put into words; possessed by him, protected, worshipped, prized. It was all those things and somehow more. When he looked at her that way, she knew he saw his everything in her. “I love you too.”
“Master Poe, Mistress Ava,” a polite metallic voice made them jump and they turned to see the bronzed protocol droid standing a little too close to them, arms bent unnaturally at the elbows so that his hands hovered in front of his hips, head tilted to one side.
“Dammit Threepio,” Poe clapped a hand to his brow, huffing a sigh. “I told you to wait at our quarters.”
“I apologize, Master Poe, but it was growing too loud in your quarters. Your young Mistress Leia and Mistress Shara have no concept of volume control and a vocabulary of language that I seem to lack in my databanks.”
“You have no concept of personal space,” Poe grumbled under his breath. “And are missing body language from your databanks.”
Ava snorted a laugh. Her husband loved droids, he really did, but Threepio, despite being a protocol droid, had horrific manners and seemed relatively oblivious to the nuances of human interaction.
“Did you need to talk to me about something?” Ava directed her attention to the droid, trying to be patient. The sooner the droid got done with whatever he needed to say, the sooner they could send him on his way.
“I have been meaning to talk to you, Mistress Ava, about living arrangements for myself and Artoo-deetoo,” he nodded but did so with all of his torso, rather than just his head.
“Oh,” Ava hadn’t really even given thought to the droids and who had taken possession of them since Leia’s passing. It didn’t seem like any of her business. “Where have you been staying? And why would you want to talk to me about it?” She glanced to Poe who simply gave her a “don’t ask” sort of look.
“We have been living in spare quarters on base and working alongside Master Finn and other leaders in the Resistance,” Threepio stated. “But now that the fighting is coming to an end, we are uncertain of what will happen to us. You see, Artoo-deetoo and I belong to the Skywalker family.”
A heavy weight of realization hit Ava and she understood now why he’d come to her. It unnerved her a little whenever a sentient droid like him spoke of being owned by anyone, but it was the truth. C-3PO and R2-D2 were built as companion droids, not to function as individuals, not the way other sentient beings did. Their purpose was to serve, and they needed an owner to take care of them.
“Young Master Luke is the only Skywalker left,” Threepio said it without inflection but somehow his tone managed still to carry sadness. “We didn’t bring it up before but now that you and Master Poe are building a house, we thought perhaps there might be sufficient space for us.”
“Oh,” Ava turned to glance at Poe again. She knew he wasn’t thrilled about the notion of having the inept protocol droid shuffling around the house all the time, but he was Luke’s by rights. She couldn’t stand the thought of him being separated from the family he’d been part of for four generations. “I’m sure we can work something out,” she didn’t know how but that was something they had time to think about. Their house would take time to build.
“Thank you very much, Mistress Ava,” Threepio sounded relived. “Artoo will be very glad to hear it.”
“You’re welcome, Threepio,” Ava smiled. “Now if you’ll excuse us,” she took Poe’s hand again and pulled him along. “We need some time alone. Why don’t you go see if Finn needs you?” She called back as they put more distance between themselves and the droid, Poe doing a very poor job at suppressing his laughter.
It didn’t take long to get to their quarters and Ava dropped her bag as soon as she got in the door, seeing all three of her children in the living room, the girls in their playpen and Luke sitting on the couch in front of them, reading them a story from a datapad, little holographic illustrations hovering above the device as the story progressed.
“Hey Mom, welcome home,” Luke grinned, getting up and setting the datapad on the caf table. The girls started to whine. “Why are you fussing?” He laughed. “Look who’s home. It’s Mama!”
Ava pulled her son into a hug, kissing him on the cheek since he was too tall now for her to kiss the top of his head. She felt a pang as she saw yet again all the similarities between him and his father, but she pushed it aside. She didn’t know if Poe had told Luke about Ben being at the food festival, but she would certainly relay Ben’s message to their son and pass along the kyber crystal. His training as a Padawan would come to an end soon. But Ava couldn’t dwell on that. It made her sad, knowing her little boy was almost grown. She gave him a squeeze before he let her go, then went to the play pen and kissed each of her girls on the nose, watching them bouncing at the knees, tugging on the rail of their little jail.
“Were you good for your Papa and big brother while Mama was away?” Ava asked, stroking first Shara’s curls then Leia’s. Their hair was getting much thicker and darker black like Poe’s with each passing day.
“Leia said her first word,” Luke announced with pride and Ava gasped in shock, turning her head to look at Poe who was smiling nervously and then to Luke who was smirking, trying not to laugh.
“What was it? Did you record it?”
“Uh…no. I didn’t record it,” Poe knelt down beside her and plucked up Leia while Ava pulled Shara into her arms.
“Why not?” She watched her husband turn red in the face. “What was the word, Poe?”
“Kriff,” he bit his bottom lip and Ava burst out laughing.
“I think Gram would approve,” Luke insisted, dropping to a seat on the couch.
“Yeah,” Ava beamed at Poe, enjoying the moment with all their family together. Poe pressed a soft kiss to Leia’s chubby little cheek making her giggle and squeal, her legs flailing, one hand slapping against his chest. “I think so too.”
