FEMALE X-MEN x FEMALE!READER HEADCANONS - How Do They React When You Tell Them You’re Pregnant? (Part 2)
KITTY PRYDE (SHADOWCAT)
When you tell Kitty you’re pregnant, she immediately squeals and starts jumping like a little girl, grinning ear to ear
"Like, are you serious?! I’m gonna be, like, a mom?!" She asks you with her eyes positively sparkling with emotion, and you nod, which makes her squeal even more
Kitty immediately starts rambling about possible future names, to what kind of adorable clothes they will wear, to future birthday parties, all while she lovingly rubbed your belly
"I can’t wait to, like, bake the cake for them!" She added, and you couldn’t help but nervously laugh, considering her…questionable culinary skills
Despite this, you smile and give her a big hug which she’s quick to give back; both of you excited to start this journey together
TABITHA SMITH (BOOM BOOM)
When you tell Tabby you’re pregnant, for once, the usually spunky and loud-mouthed Boom Boom is silent
She doesn’t know if she’ll be able to be a good mother. After all, she didn’t grew up with the best role model in the form of her criminal father. She is also aware that she’s a loose cannon and too much of a wild child, so she fears her kid will turn up to be just like her
You frown at her silence, worried that Tabitha could end up rejecting you. But then, she smiles, and it isn’t her usual cocky and confident smirk, but a soft, barely noticeable grin which was beautiful in your eyes
"Babe, not gonna lie, I’m nervous as heck…" Tabby confesses as she pulls you into an embrace "But…I’m willing to give it a shot. I promise, our kid will never have to suffer the way I did"
You smile softly as you hug her back, grateful for her support and promising her that you’ll be there for her as well
RAHNE SINCLAIR (WOLFSBANE)
When you tell Rahne you’re pregnant, to your surprise, you find out she already knew!
"H-How?!" You ask as the Scottish girl giggles sheepishly
"I don’ know. I think it has somethin’ to do with my mutation…" Rahne confesses as she begins to lovingly rub your belly, and a soft smile spreads on her face
She could feel their pup growing steadily inside of you thanks to her instincts as a wolf, and you watch as she transforms into her wolf form and begins cuddling against you in a protective manner, her tail wagging excitedly as she rubs her snout against your belly
"I take it you’re excited about being a mom, too?" You ask her, smirking with amusement, and she gives you an enthusiastic bark
You giggle and pat her head lovingly, and the two continue cuddling with each other, excited to take this huge step side by side
LAURA KINNEY (X-23)
When you tell Laura you’re pregnant, she’s left in stunned surprise
Truth be told, she already had some suspicions considering her instincts that she inherited from her father, but she just thought you were sick or something! Not pregnant!
X-23 was a living weapon. Her whole life she’s been taught nothing but to kill. She fears she wouldn’t be able to give your child the life they deserve or even end up accidentally hurting them
"Laura…?" You ask quietly, worried at the silence of the daughter of Wolverine. You honestly feared she was going to reject you "…Are you mad?"
X-23 brakes out of her shock and gives you one of her usual faint, but fond smiles as she grabs your hands and squeezes them lovingly
"Never. I could never be mad at you" Laura promises you as she softly kisses your cheeks "I am honored…to be able to share this experience with you"
The daughter of Wolverine then rubs her hand gently against your tummy; hands that were used to maim people now lighter than a feather at what would eventually become your future child
You smile and give Laura a big hug, and she’s quick to hug back, brimming with excitement on the inside
She also can’t wait to tell her father how’s he’s going to be a grandpa. She bets that Logan will absolutely freak
WANDA MAXIMOFF (SCARLET WITCH)
When you tell Wanda you’re pregnant, her initial reaction is one of quiet, overwhelmed emotion.
You watch as her eyes fill with tears, her hands trembling as she reaches out to touch your face. "A baby?" she whispers, her voice filled with disbelief.
For Wanda, this news is a dream she never thought possible, a hope she had long since buried beneath the weight of her complicated life, after being locked away in a mental hospital for so long by her father when she was young
She pulls you into a gentle embrace, holding you close as she tries to process the enormity of what this means for the both of you. Her powers flicker around her, responding to her heightened emotions, but she calms herself quickly, pressing her forehead to yours.
"I never thought I would have this chance," Wanda says softly. "But now… now we can have a family."
You smile and nod, and the two embrace each other once more
"We should probably tell Pietro about this, too" You add after a while, and Wanda snorts
"Oh my god, he’s going to lose his mind" She giggled, already imagining her twin brother freaking out at the prospect of being an uncle

Jealous? Me? No…
Illyana Rasputin X Male Reader
So I finally watched The New Mutants yesterday, and I gotta say, it wasn’t good, but it wasn’t bad either. An okay Marvel film in my opinion, however Anya Taylor-Joy absolutely killed the role as Magik. And the idea of a Reader who also had a relative in the X-Men and is believable, gave me an idea, and this was it.
The relationship you had with Illyana was particularly hard to define. You wouldn’t call her your girlfriend, but she is also more than a friend. You sensed a Kinship with her ever since your, outburst. It sounds small but it resulted in the deaths of a lot of people, I suppose that’s what happens when a Mutant tried to live a normal life. Having the same genetic system as The Wolverine, it gave you nearly all the same powers, including a deep primal rage that could erupt at any time. Thus, leading you to being hospitalized.
Dr Reyas had an interest in you particularly, it seems only one Successful clone of Wolverine exists; you. Or so they think, you know of one more, Laura. Keeping her secret, keeping her under the nose of the Government was of utmost importance. Everything with Illyana was fine, she was being her usual self, rude, condescending, and just an overall ass to you and everyone, but it didn’t bother you. Everything was fine, until Dani made her appearance. A new challenger enters Illyanas game, and she doesn’t like it.
You and Illyana were watching Dani sleep, granted you two were outside the room, watching though the faded glass. You couldn’t make out any physical differences in her. She looked like your average teenager, maybe her powers are more psionic. You rubbed your chin and Illyana spoke. “I bet Pocahontas will try to run the moment she wakes up.” She said, almost to get a rise out of you, to see your negative but passionate response but you were simply thinking, blocking her out. She noticed your lack of response and turned to you. All your attention wasn’t on her anymore, but on this new girl.
“(Y/n).” She said with that stern Russian accent, it snapped you out of your trance and you finally looked at Illyana, as much as she annoyed and overall pissed you off, her beauty was unmatched, blue Iris, long gorgeous blonde hair like a brick road to heaven, and an accent that commands respect but has such a alluring tone.
“What?” You say, “You gonna bully this one too?” You say, Illyana smirks, finally getting your attention. “Depends, you seem to be infatuated with Pocahontas.” She said, you finally responded to her obvious jab and shook your head.
“Real fucking funny.” You mutter. “A new girl winds up here and you’re already jealous?” You said, Illyana kept her smile, but deep down she was starting to get annoyed.
“I don’t get jealous.”
“Then you won’t mind me saying hello.” You reply, and reach for the door handle, and for a moment you saw a short glimpse of panic in her eyes, as you gripped the handle, the voice of God spoke to you.
“(Y/n), remove your hand from the door.” Dr Reyas said from the intercom, she was watching, always watching. You reluctantly removed your hand. “Please gather in the main foyer, our daily session begins in 10 minutes.” She says, you look at Illyana and shrug, putting your hands in your jacket, you walk off. You and Illyana enter the room to Roberto, Sam, and Rahne, the other tree stuck in this place. It seems that there were only two chairs left, oddly enough, both seats end up with you next to Illyana. Reyas sits before you all, and starts.
“Yesterday, I asked you to think about… the first time your mutation manifested. Would anyone like to share? (Y/n)? Sam? Illyana? Roberto? Rahne? Look, we can’t help each other unless we talk to each other. I’ve said this a hundred times. This program can’t help you if you refuse to participate. So, Rahne, why don’t you start?” She said, Rahne was a short girl, pixie cut and had a soft Scottish accent, she wasn’t as feminine as most girls, but she had her own charm.
“I…” she started, but Dani, the new girl walked in, sulking.
“Please join us, Dani. This is our new patient, Danielle Moonstar. Let’s do our best to make her feel at home. Go ahead, Rahne.” Reyas said, (Y/n) shrugs and stands up and takes another chair and places it further in the circle.
“Take a seat.” You say, and sit back down, Dani awkwardly sulks next to you, and Illyanas eyes dart from her Hand puppet to you.
“Right. I was 13. I remember running through the woods.” Rahne began.
“How did you feel?” Doctor Reyas asks.
“Free. Like, the most free I’d felt my whole life. But guilty, too.”
“Why feel guilty?” You ask, “You get a turn into a wolf, that’s fucking sick.”
“Because I knew it was bad. I went to Reverend Craig… to see if he could pray it out of me. He asked me to show him, so I changed.” Rahne continues..
“And what did Reverend Craig do?”
“Beat me about half to death. Said I was a witch… that I was going to hell.” Rahne looked so, hurt. You reluctantly sat up from your seat.
“Would anyone else like to share their first time?” Reyas asks, and Illyana decides to turn to heat up.
“New girl. How fucked up are you?” She said, turning the ire on Dani, you turned to the Girl.
“Illyana.” You said, a bit of a grumble.
“Drugs, I bet. Or a nympho, maybe..” she kept pestering. You then decided to raise your voice.
“Cut the shit okay?” You said, The Russian turned to you, seeing your face and found an odd sense of pleasure in it. Reyas takes hold of the situation.
“Keep behaving… exactly like you are right now… and we can all just spend the day in solitary. I want all of you to think very carefully… about how you’d like to use your time here. And how long you want that time to be. (Y/n), since you’re already up… why don’t you show Dani around?” Reyas orders. You stood up, still locking eyes with Illyana.
“Yeah, sure..” you said, and looked over to Dani. You offered your hand to help her up and she took it, she stood up and you began to walk around, showing the new Girl around, that was a mistake.
Night has crept up to you all much sooner than expected, you were preparing to turn in for the night, finishing up clothes duty, the sudden sound of a clank of metal caused you to put the towel down and then around, you half expected death, but it was much worse.. Illyana.
“Oh, it’s you… gonna keep bullying Dani for whatever reason?” You said, but she wasn’t her cocky, overbearing self. She pouted and folded her arms, and asked a single question.
“Do you like her?” She asks, the question blindsided you.
“What?” You responded, and Illyana slowly approached.
“Do you like her? You act like you do..”
“I .. I don’t get it why are you upset?” You said, which causes her to finally just spew her feelings. “You are so fucking dense! Do you not notice anything you big dumb cute plyushevyy mishka?!” She yells, it took you less than a minute to realize she’s pinned you to the wall. Her arm now armored and placed near your head, as she leaned in, her lips barely brush up against yours.
“YA lyublyu tebya, Rosomakha.” She said, your mind translated the words.. “I Love you, Wolverine.” Your hands almost instinctively wrapped around her waist, much to her shock. Your lips pressed firmly against hers and her powers almost activate due to a high sense of, emotion. And it seems you two fall together, to her happy place.
Jealousy, from what I heard it runs in the Family…
(This was just a short thing I wanted to write, Definitely want to make more New Mutant Content, we need more of it.)

Note: Happy belated Pride! Some favorite LGBTQ horror characters. And a reminder I don’t tolerate homophobia, biphobia, transphobia, etc. on my blogs. As a cis woman with PCOS, I sure as hell do not support transmisogyny.
This blog might be primarily reader inserts, but sometimes I just like to discuss miscellaneous characters. Also, reporting hateful posts here and on Twitter is just depressing.
1. Amazon Eve from American Horror Story: Freak Show
This and Coven are my favorite seasons, but it’s like Puella Magi where I can’t rewatch because Freak Show made me sad. I love Eve’s maternal attitude and zero tolerance for BS.
2. the Chemist from American Horror Story: Red Tide
I like psychedelic drug-themed horror (see Mandy and Brain Damage), but I haven’t watched much evil pharmacology so the first half of Double Feature was interesting.
3-4. Miss Spink and Miss Forcible from Coraline
The fact they’re an item completely flew over tiny Tawney’s head when she read the book. My family watches British mysteries, so I grew up with quirky old ladies and love seeing them in horror/fantasy.
5. Matthew Brown from Hannibal
Yeah, there’s Will and Hannibal’s dynamic, but what about the orderly’s crush on the former?
6. Dani Moonstar from The New Mutants
The movie did have its flaws. Dani and Rahne’s relationship wasn’t one of them. I recently started reading X-Men comics and it’s a shame they aren’t a couple on-page.
7. Herbert West from Re-Animator
Another mad scientist! This time, one with a huge crush on his roomie! The only person he’s nice to!
8. Robin Buckley from Stranger Things
I like that she and Steve remained friends. Even if her first stated crush was on a schoolmate who sings like a Muppet in labor.
9. Danny Mahealani from Teen Wolf
There’s actually a fair amount of gay/bisexual guys on the show. Stiles is implied to be bi, Jackson comes out in season six, Ethan is there, Brett dances with girls and boys, Corey/Mason is my (canon M/M) OTP… Danny was there from the beginning, though.
10. Raúl Cocolotl from Wendell & Wild
Good punk representation for a kids’ (PG-13) movie. He and Kat are both punks, yet their attitudes are different.

X-Month Finale: My Top 10 X-Runs
Welcome one and all to the grand finale of X-Month. A thing or two got changed and moved around but i'm overall proud of how it went this time. We've looked at darkwing duck, the greatest x-men cartoon ever, and Nightcrawler's two moms. Now we end this month with A look at something diffrnet but personal to me. These are my top 10 x-runs, the runs of x-men and it's various spinoffs that I truly love, that define the book for me and define this part of the franchise. There the books that either made me love mutants so much in the first place or helped reaffirm why. They run the gammut from the just ended at the time of this article Krakoa era's majesty all the way back to chris claremont helping retool a struggling half baked idea into one of the greatest comics ever. These comics are why I love x-men and i'm happy to share them with you and hopefully get you to read them and hopefully i'll be able to cover them all some day. But for now this is a nice smorgoseboard of what makes the strangest mutants of all marvel's best part, a small pocket full of creativity, commentary , change and artistic glory.
So a few guidelines: For longtime readers, I usually do top 12 lists, to the point i'm shirnking my best animated episodes list down to it, but with all the x themeing in the krakoan age it felt right to slim it down to a nice sharp x. The second is that i'm crediting every artist who worked on at least three issues. I'd credit all of them but the runs from the 2010's and 2000's are caked with one off fill ins and 80's comics tended to have a ton of one off fill ins or other people doing the annuals. I'm not against it, if you have someone who can do great art or guest on a run do it and it's thanks to this kind of thing we got walt simonson for one glorious issue of x-men, I just don't want the art credits to be 80 pages long, but DID take the effort to comb thorugh every run and find every artist that at least did an arc on the books honored here, as i'm trying to break out of only propping up the writers when it comes to comics. Their a VISUAL medium and the artists are often what makes a run. So to under the cut my x-men for the uncanny, the astonshing and my faviorites.
10. The New Mutants Written By Chris Claremont Drawn by Bob McLeod, Sal Buscema, Bill Sienkiewicz, Steve Leialoha, Mary Wilshire, Rick Leonardi and Jackson Guice Marvel GN #4, New Mutants Vol 1 , #1-54 + 3 Annuals, NM Special #1 59 Issues
It was the 80's and the Uncanny X-Men was marvel's best selling comic. Chris Claremont and a slew of talented game changing artists had turned a once niche property into one of the most layered, engaging and compelling books out there. So naturally Marvel wanted MORE money and to spin off this mother. Chris was reluctant because he wanted the main book to be special and it's own thing.. but was then threatned that if he didn't do it someone else will, so he found a concept he liked: Focusing on teenage emerging mutants something lightly glanced at with Kitty Pryde in Uncanny but this book brough to the forefront.
In the process Clarmeont and Bob Mcleod created a bunch of my faviorite mutants: The outspoken but Compasionate and tactical Dani, her bestfriend/sorta girlfriend and heavily abused prior to her coming to the team Rahne, naive country boy Sam, smooth talking only in his head and hot headed in everywhere including his body and my adopted son Roberto. Theree was also Karma, a later revealed to be queer immigrant (While not done by Chris Claremont here he certainly is responsible for it later int he 2000s', so respect) trying to care for two siblings the book quickly writes out.
The book would add four more to the mix: Amilla who thanks to a messy backstory and not a lot of use is eh, and three of my faviorites: Illyana, Kitty Pryde's best friend and a sorceress who was kidnapped and tortured by a demon man, Doug Ramsey, kitty's other friend and a computer genius who can read any language and in this era was a non combatant and Warlock, doug's best self friend, a goofy gloriously weird looking alien on the run from his abusive dad.
If your thinking this team has a lot of angst you'd be correct: Rahne is introduced running from an angry mob, Dani having to go with a white man she resents after her grandfather is shot, Roberto's girlfriend being killed by bigots and Sam barely able to keep his family fed having to mine in his pa's place after his dad died. The X-Men as a rule carry baggage but these poor kids had a whole planeload, not helped by being hated and feared.
And yet they perservere: they find love, find strength in each other. They sometimes clash, poor Illyana gets accused of being evil due to her demonic powers far too often, Sam has a one sided crush on Amara, and Doug grapples with being the only one on the team whose powers don't make him fight good.
The book also has a fantastic horror tone at times , something uesd early on as the Professor Xavier who brought these kids together to train them, and to not fight which being mutants is still something they run into constantly. While the issues after tried to go for a more conventional superhero book, Bill Skinewietz arrival, gloriously scratchy pencils and endlessly awesome covers helped cement it: these were kids dealing with terrible horrors: aliens who'd kill their own children, the DID ridden head of Charles Xaviers son, demons internal and without, and a demonic bear following Dani Moonstar I still don't fully understand, but still slaps.
New Mutants is one of the best x-books of the 80s, with X-Factor close behind it (It didn't make the cut but I still love Louise Simonson's Run), and one other just ahead. It's a book full of creative swings, ideas that would last the franchise a while and some of the best mutants ever made.
9. Iceman Written by Sina Grace DB Alesandro Vitti, Edgar Salazar, Robert Gil, and Nathan Stockman Iceman V3 1-11, Iceman V4 1-5, X-Men Winters End 17 Issues
This is the shortest out of these runs and that's for a very simple reason: Marvel's Editorial was very shitty to writer Sina Grace. They lambastated him for going on podcasts in a way that was subtly hompohobic, brought him back for another run.. and then cancled it 5 issues in. Grace has since done work for DC and marvel needs to both apologize and either bring him back or at least collect his run.
Iceman comes from RessuXion, Marvel's kinda sorta push to bring the x-men back after trying to kill them with the previous era. That's not hyperbole, there was a giant murder cloud, most of ya'll likely know, and Ike Pearlmutter was thankfully gone so the X-Men got something resembling a push and the fantastic four were reunited. That last part isn't relevant.
Ressurxion was only a half measure: the x-men really didn't interact with the rest of the lines still, one of the two flagship titles X-Men Gold, was a mediocre rehash of a bunch of previous stories wasting the great idea of having Kitty Pryde lead, and X-Men Blue, while awesome and only barely not making this list at various points, felt very weel spinny as Cullen Bunn wasn't alowed to change much as Hickman's run was on the horizon but not set ins tone. Which is stupid and something I doubt HIkcman actually approved or asked for.
Still Ressuction had a hidden gem alongside Blue: Iceman. So long story short that's going to sound weird even to fans who were there: The Original Five X Men were brough to the future by Beast in a stupid move that left them stranded and traumtized. Jean being about as tactful as a hurricane during Bendis run , OUted bobby claimed "he's not bi he's full on gay" and kinda shoved him out of the closet. While this was well meaning as Bobby still was in the closet in present day, it was done hamm handledly with a slice of accidental bi erasure.
Our Bobby coming out though was thankfully handled better with him admitting he didn't admit he was gay and while Bendis handeld the first part of the coming out with a sledge hammer, several previous x writers had left the seeds that the og class clown was indeed gay and it' sa move I support: the grounding was there and even with him dating women he never seemed that invested for the most part.
So the next era was too busy with the murder cloud to do anything of note with him being out, but thankfully they gave bobby to Sina Grace. Iceman is a fantastic solo and a fantastic queer superhero book, with Bobby figuring out what Coming Out means in his late 20's, and being both out and proud.. but still having struggles. He dosen't know how to put his profile together, has an akward mission with his last het romance kitty, a romance that in hindsight perfectly comes off like someone trying badly to pass as straight, and flirts with wolverine's disaster bisexual son who serves as the main antagonist. It's a book that explores just how fun bobby can be and sold me on a character I didn't care about before.
It also goes into his awful parents. His dad was a massive asshole in the 90's, tried to change but snapped back and while the snap back is a bit o fa continuity gafe, it's one that works as Bobby has to come out to two parents who already barely accept he's a mutant, and now have to accept he's gay. And then try to groom his past self to be the perfect son they always wanted.
It's a great run that not only lets Bobby show off his powers but his heart, humor and what makes him a great character. Check it out of you haven't and hopefully we'll get a one volume edition one of these days. Also just so I dont' have to say that a thousand time that goes for EVERY run present.
8. Wolverine and the X-Men Written by Jason Aaron Art by Chris Bachalo, Nick Bradshaw, Jorge Molina, Ramon Perez, Pepe Larazz and Ed McGuiness 42 Issues + Annual + AU Issue + Amazing X-Men 1-5 49 Issues
Wolverine and the X-Men is the big breakout of one Jason Aaron, a writer I have mixed feelings about. He has written comics I like, this one, doctor strange and so far his TMNT run, but has a weakness for putting over the top spectacle over character or cohesive plot, his Thor run degrading with time and his Avengers run having great ideas for plots but no real meat to said plots.
Wolverine and the X-Men does run into that a little, mostly with the x-men themselves as only WOlverine really gets an arc: most of the team gets a spotlight issue, but still spend the bulk of their time in fight scenes. Kitty Pryde is the only one besides logan to net decent focus and that gets thrown out as Brian Micheal Bendis called dibs as soon as he joined post avx. This was the first book I read with rachel summers but outside of her spotlight she's mostly there to be the token telepath. We never really get a sense of what she WANTS out of the school, how she feels about what Scott's up to anything personal. Cannonball, Sam from New Mutants, gets it worse as he's really just there for his sisters subplot and nothing else. I won't evfen get into the horny bird lady sexually harassing iceman. Ther'es also a bad tendency to treat Cyclops as some form of despot and not that guy what over at the other place.
That said the series manages to dodge this being a complete issue with the kids: Wolverine and the X-Men is at it's core a teen x-men book and the reason these teens are back in school at all also provides nice motivation for Logan to be running a school, something the book frequently lampshades is kinda nuts. With mutantkind dwindling at the time, Cyclops kept militarizing the children and Logan, tired of it and wanting them to live rather than surivvie, took half the x-men and any willing students.
The result is a diverse and intresting student body focusing mainly on Idie, a young religoius african teen who sees her powers as a curse and herself as a monster, Broo, my faviorite x-child period and an adorable nerd who happens to be a brood, a group of aliens that try to eat the x-men regularly with the mutation to not be a bloodthirsty monster, Gensis, a cloned apocalypse who was given superman's upbringing in stasis. And of course theirs Quinten Quire whose been overused sense this but hadn't really got to do anything. He's a punk who after a breakdown at finding out he was adopted decided to throw a riot at the school. He'd rather be on Cyclops Island but gets dragged to Jean Grey's School for Hire Leanring, renamed from "I did your wife school of hire learning". It' shis evolution tha'ts intresting: going from a mouthy twerp with way too much power and ego to.. well still a mouthy twerp but one with an actual heart and friends. We also have Kid Gladiator, son of the shiar empreoro gladiator and boisterious hilaroius jock. We also get great additions like eyeboy, sprite and shark girl, albeit none getting a ton of focus here.
While the main cast is great, what throws this series over the top its it's gonzo creativity. More than any writer since morrrison and until hickman, Aaron embraced the batshit insanity of the x-men and grasps at it with a gonzo whimsy few can match. Jason Aaron has had his issues with reining it in but with x-men it's just the right ballance.
The first arc alone, one of my faviorites despite not being a fan of chris bachelos art, Wolverine opens school, and find sit under siege from a revamped hellfire club, now a bunch of tweens lead by Kade Kilgore. Given hellfire was reduced to "sebastian shaw on occasion maybe" by this point, it was a needed revamp and I get it's not everyones taste but for me it works. Especially when one of Kade's minons is a frankenstien (the doctor not the monster man), who grenade launches frankenstiens at our heros and mutates two members of the school board into a wendigo and a sauron. Oh and the schools grounds have become a baby krakoa, the hisland that wallks like a schoolyard, which wins the day and soon becomes my faviorite part of the book. I loved krakoa since I was a teen so seeing him get revamped as this adorable adiditon was great and I still wonder what happened to them and why the krakoa era never adressed them.
Our heroes fight weaponized brood pregancies, go to space casinos to raise funds, deal with angel having come back as an actual angel and possed by.. something, too many tie ins, a murder circus lead by frankenstien, a field trip to the savage land and a final showdown with the hellfire club. It was a wonderfully creative, batshit insane story with tons of great ideas that have been barely touched, like School-Krakoa, Toad as a good guy or Logan's brother dog coming back as a time traveling badass. There are better books than Wolverine and the X-MEn but few have this much fun.
PS: Almost buried the leap, this book brought doop from x-statix back and i'm eternally greatful and his spotlight issue, drawn by co-creator mike allred, is easily the best of the run. I mean it has this alone
So speaking of doop
7. X-Statix Written by Peter Milligan Drawn by Mike Allred X-Force 116-129, X-Statix 1-26, Dead Girl 1-5, Wolverine/Doop 1 and 2 46 issues
X-Statix came about as part of marvel's big relaunch of the X-Men with New X-Men, canceling several titles, relaunching a few and changing up the few left. In this case X-Force, previously about the new mutants as they grew up and got guns then got their personalities back once Rob Liefield left, they instead completely upended it. The old cast was gone, the old premise was gone, and a whole new idea and cast of mutants were introduced.
The series had a genius premise: A shady reality show producer, Spike Freeman, starts up a mutant reality show at the height of the reality show boom starring a bunch of mutants who are desperate to be loved and adored by becoming rich and famous, often being conceded assholes like any reality tv star.
The catch was revealed in the first issue as the bulk of the team is gunned down: Only angry black man with internalized issues about his race Anarchist and the egotistical , pill popping shocking compitent u go girl are left as the team is rebuilt, now lead by the orphan, a man with super sensitivty and a ton of lampshaded angst, Vivisector, an erudite wolfman who later turns out to be gay, Phat, one of the many white kids approraiting black culture at the time, and Dead Girl. THere's many more but this is the core of the cast for most of the book, which was later relaunched as X-Statix. Many a member dies, no one is safe, and it's cyncial as fuck, making fun of celebrity, events, and mutant cliches. Some of the shine has rubbed off this one as a lot of these jokes have been made a lot, but it's still fun thanks to it's compelling cast who get fleshed out amazingly, meditations on fame, and Doop, the little ball of tumors that follows them around. It's it's own neat little pocket of the marvel unvierse: it's revivial is pretty detached from Krakoa and something I need to check out and it's cast, due to mbeing dead a alot, havne't really crossed over. But the book itself stands as a nice unique pocket
And saving the best for last no discussion would be complete without Mike Allred, an artist with a unique style remincent of jack kirbys btu still his own that's this nice art deco chunky goodness and works perfectly here, both giving the mutants all really fantastic designs and nicely giving everything a splash of color to contrast the dark tone. This is one I picked up in high school in backissues and hasn't left me since.
6. Uncanny X-Men Writer: Kireon Gillen Artists: Carlos Pachcheo, Terry Dodson, Greg Land and Daniel Acuna Uncanny X-Men V1 #534.1-544, X-Men Regenisis, Uncanny X-Men Volume 2 #1-20, AVX Consequences 1-5, 36 Issues
So when I first got back into comics reguarly I figured from both is more dangerous new design where he can't see too good
And the way both bendis own much worse companion book and various others like Uncanny Avnegers or Wolverine and the X-Men talked about him and AVX that Scott Summers had become the new magneto and a dangerous edgelord man.
Instead the truth was more nuanced as i'd learn: Some writers made Scott a bit of an ass during his time leading utopia, the slap of concrete what contained all the muants left. But despite some questionable actions down more to bad writing, he wasn't evil. He asn't purely good either as the schism I mentiond proved, driven to do whatever it took to survive. He was shady but never quite took the heel turn, instead being an intrestingly pragmatic character. Also while he did kill charles xavier it was while hopped up on the phoenix force, something he points out reguarly making everyone else come off as assholes for giving Jean a pass but not scott.
And the man who wrote this best was Kireon Gilleon, scottish writer and maestro who came along after a decent but forgetable run from Matt Fraction and gave the franchise the injection it needed.
His run started with the x-men on utopia nad not only reballanced Scott after said bad writing, but showed off the good and bad of Scott: he's repessed and obessive, but also a stategic mastermind determined to save his people. The early part of his run does what the run before it by Matt Fraction did: uses the whole of mutantkind for huge spectacle as well as return Kitty Pryde to normal, she was a ghost for a while, so she can go off with the other book. The highlight is it's climax: juggernaught, jacked up on the power of a god and a hammer like thor, is more unstoppable than normal and Scott throws EVERY plan he has at the guy and every mutant he has at the guy which is ALL OF THEM who aren't children. And even a few children because the situations that bad.
The real meat is the sadly short livedb ut awesome second volume of uncannY: After the schism, Scott splits up, getting Emma because she loves the guy, Namor because he wants to do Emma and i'm not exagerating he's blatant about it, Storm because Scott dosen't trust himself, Hope the mutants own personal jesus, Danger, the former danger room having gained snetience and tried to kill charles for enslaving her
Dr Nemisis, an immortal nazi hunter, Colossus, current host of the juggernaught powers, his sister Magik, Psylocke, and of course Magneto, who'd recently joined up and is master of magnet.
This team of scary motherfuckers is the exctinction team and that name is unsettling on purpose but also dosen't mean kill everyone.. it just means they could and Scott is both helping mutantkinds rep AND scarring the shit out of it's eneies my taking on extinction events: if something can wipe out huamnity it's their job and it's a fucking briliant setup. Take the strongest x-men left on scott's side, which is really most of THE strongest in general and put them against the worst.
This also sets up the big bad of the series and Kireon's best achivment: Sinister. Gilleon revamped him from a fairly sterotypical and deranced mad science man to a campy as hell horrible as hell man who sets out to remake the world literally in his image, thinks turn of the century britan was just fine, hates women and isn't lacking for quips or meance with our heroes stuck in a city of him that can develop safe guards every time they kill one. And he does so by stealing a celestial's head, which means the first mission alone is stop a space god AND a madman.
There's other good romps but sinister is the core and the series weathers the avx tie ins decently, weaving them into what's writtne. IT's ending, consequences, isn't nearly as good, with scott feeling out of character and was meant to set up further adventures that instead got handed off to bendis, but Gielleon's runs a great mediation on absolute power , scare tactics and the meaning of fear regardless and is still a joy to read every time.
5. X-Men Red/S.W.O.R.D. By Al Ewing Art by: Valerio Schiti, Jacopo Camagni, Stefano Caselli , Jacopo Camagni , Yildray Cinar and Luciano Vecchio S.W.O.R.D. V2 #1-11 , Cable Reloaded, X-Men Red V2 1-18 and The Resurrection of Magneto 1-4 34 Issues
Al Ewing is one of my faviorite writers in comics. easily. Starting with Mighty Avengers, i've adored his runs on Immortal Hulk, his ant-man/wasp trilogy, his character defining run for Roberto decosta on new avengers and usa avengers and what i've read of immortal thor among others. Al Ewing is Marvel's best writer these days and in a pool that includes Jonathan Hickman and now once again Gail Simone, tha'ts the highest praise.
So naturally given Ewing had a clear love of x-men from new avengers alone and a deep love of continuity I was chomping at the bit for him to join the krakoan age, a bit disapointed he wasn't in the first round of books but knowing he had ot show up he just had to.
Thankfully my prayers were answered as not only did Ewing arrive he arrived in style, bringing back SWORD, once shield's extraterestial arm now krakoas. Ewing at the time was reworking marvel's space with his Guardians run and wrote SWORD in concert with it, as big evfents happened and SWORD stood ready, while bringing earth, or sol as it's called onto the galactic stage, starting the run with stealing a mystery metal from the heart of creation and then using it to fund the galactic economy. SWORD was a solid captivating book, amping up the idea of mutant circutis (a bunch of mutants working in concert), galactic marvel and earth's place in it.
What's brilliant in hindsight though as while a great book on it's own, making characters I thought were highly underused like Wiz Kid or Frenzy rise to full potetial and making previously also ran mutant Peeper into a star overnight. I mean look at him
I also love Magneto is so .. happy to see him.
While SWORD is great what followed is truly incredibly, some of ewings best work and all the groundwork was laid in sword, from Magneto regretting his past in the hellfire gala tie in to said gala leading to one of the best events in x-history: Arakko. A bunch of mutatns who'd become a warrior civilization needed a home so thier island was put on mars giving them a planet and possible peace... and storm was put there as regent.
This leads to an even better sequel as ewing keeps SWORD head abigail brand on as big bad, wanting to destroy mutant civilzation and make earth a real power in the universe, and thus Arakko is a great chess piece as Storm plays against Abby for it's future for the first two arcs. Storm is a fantastic character and ewing gets her down pat, her grace, her badassery but also her humanity, kindness and mohawk. Helping her are my two faviorite mutants, no really 1 and 2 respectively, Magneto and Sunspot. Magneto was already eating well in the krakoan age, but ewing gives the old man humanity, with Magneto realizing his lost daughter Anya wasn't a mutant.. and thus can't be brought back and wondering what all this was for, being cojolled into things as he realizes as much as he wanted to retire he can't. Roberto meanwhile had a rough start in Krakoa as Jonathan Hickman took out all his brains for some reason despite being the one who started to emphasize that he's more than just a pretty face.
Ewing in his avengers runs made roberto into a master stratageist and chessmaster bar none who still loved parties, champaign robots and the mission impossible theme, so I was utterlyt hrilled to see berto on the cover. Now a consort to Shiar regent Deathbird and having a stake in the game, Roberto comes to arakko to play and quickly gets involved in things, using his skills to help his new team. Ewing is the man who truly made the best roberto decosta and it's so gratifying to see he got a second lap.
Ewing also builds up arakko well: it's culture, i'ts changes, and the challenges storm and magneto face in changing it, concluding in a massive war that ends the series as arakko's past rule comes knocking. Add in a great epilogue exploring magento and storm and you have one of the finest comic runs in recent memory.
4. New X-Men Written by Grant Morrison Art by Frank Quitely, Evan Van Sciver, Igor Kordey, Phil Jiminez, Chris Bachalo, and Marc Silvestri 114-154 Plus Annual 41 Issues
It was the early 2000's and the x-men had hit a fucking a wall. The 90s while fondly remembered for the jim lee outfits, awesome cartoon and other delights, were a nightmare time for the x-men. Just trying to read that era of uncanny and adjectivless to fill the gaps in my knowledge was a waking nightmare with only a few bright spots. I got as far as just after operation zero tolerance and bailed and despite bringnig back heavyweights like Alan Davis or Chris Claremont, restrictive ediotrial mandates, overdone crossovers and other nonsense had left the x-men barley standing.
Desperate Marvel had a bunch of creators pitch various ideas for a bold new take on the x-men.. and the winner was the one, the only Grant Morrison. Grant had already made big splashes at DC with their runs on Doom Patrol, Animal Man and more, had a penchant for writing gloriously weird, sometimes incomprehnsible stories with a beating human heart. So being both a hot writer from the other company and having a bigger bolder vision, and needing badly for the comcis to recover to cash in on the recent film and upcoming X-Men Evolution, they agreed.
The result is the run that made me the x-holic I am today: while I read x-men stories i loved before this, with Chris Claremont and Paul Smith's run being the first this is the one that got me as hooked as I am: a stylish run with what morrison called a kinetic strut, aided by Frank Quitely's weird and awesomely unique art and a variety of other artists of varying quality brought out a vision of a bold new era.
The run came out hot: it stripped it's cast down to a core of iconic x-men, added in Emma Frost finally fully reforming but still 100% that bitch, and threw in curveballs with kind monk with a hell of a look xorn and xavier himself getting his legs back. There were set backs as Colossus was killed before Morrison could use him and Claremont called dibs on rogue and storm for X-Treme X-Men, but they pivoted well.
However a flashy new look wasn't what made the book, it was it's frantic pace and bold new vision: Morrison recontexulizted the x-men as an actaul minority, giving them a culture, a voice and making many weirder and wilder than ever before, showing that not every mutant got to pass. He also threw the x-men out of the shadows: formerly, a group of outlaw mutants hated and feared, they weere still that but thanks to Professor Xavier's twin who tried to choke him in the womb, he's outed to the public and rolls with her , using his body as a suit at the time, doing so to change the x-mens mission, now doing more search and rescue with slick leather jackets. They aren't traditional superheroes anymore, but just a trained team of the best trying to help their own. The X-Men now hav ea worldwide reach with x-corp with missions going from paris to shang hai.
Morrison took plenty of other hammers to the status quo: Xavier and Lilandra broke up, he could walk, Genosha got destroyed in a devistating act, scott and jean had marriage crissi as Emma gaslit him into an affair and Beast got his awesome lion look. The run also isn't afraid to get weird with xavier's twin he seemingly killed in th womb Cassandra Nova, a corrupt general whose skin becomes golems, and a special class made of mutants all with weird borderline useless powers, most of whom would become fan faviorites.
Years ago this would've been my easy number one but age for both me and the comic have revealed cracks; Some bits haven't aged well like Dust, whow hil ea good character now was done with no real research or depth, the u men dangling way too close to a parody of trans people, being just fringe enough to avoid it but still far closer than they should be.
The biggest knock though is the final two arcs: everything up to that is minty fresh and full of cool ideas warts and all. The last two arcs have Morrison try to rerail magneto back into a hateful monster instead of the complicated monster he'd become, something already tried in the 90's but even worse here, with Magneto reduced to the boring silver age villian that got old fast. I'm not against holding his feet to the fire for his worse actions, but this one was too far and swiftly retconned.. in a very dumbass way but still, you uusally only get a patch on a bad story that fast. Here Comes TOmmorow likewise is a trippy and mediocre finale to the run. Not as bad as what just came before, but it's grant morrison at their most self indulgent... that i've read.
Still despite the runs issues.. it's a good ride and worth it for classics like E is For Extinction and Riot at Xaviers alone.
3. X-Men By Jonathan Hickman Art by Pepe Laraz, R.B. Silva, Lenil Francis Yu, Mahmud Asrar and Valerio Schiti House of X 1-6, Powers of X 1-6, X-Men 2019 1-21, 5 Giant Size X-Men One Shots, and Inferno 1-4 42 Issues
Anyone whose read this blog a long time knew this was coming. I mention X-Men as much as possible and the krakoan era, being so weird and wonderful, was something I brought up a lot. Especially the x-men colonizing mars. And I probably will again. The Krakoan age is one of the best eras of x-men and while it ended in fire and a whimper, it started with a bang.
The x-men were in a bad place in 2019. Ressurxion as I mentioned wasn't horrible but wasn't really a reinvention, partly because they woudln't let anyone make any real changes which... again this run could've easily dealt with fine. Before that Marvel , and once again entirely serious tried to kill the x-men, showving them to the side and trying intitally to make the inhumans symapthetic when they needed to get rid of their murder cloud. And the inhumans books WERE great, but no one could get the taste of ike pearlmutter trying to make them the new x-men out of their mouths.
And like the last time the x-men were in a bad spot, marvel sought a hot creator, gave them creative control and let them do a hard stylish reset. Last time it was grant morrison, , this time it was Jonathan Hickman.
Hickman is one of my faviorite marvel writers. While he started slow yet awesome with a small run on secret warriors, a book that remade shield and did black ops glory, he rose to his biggest success with Fantastic Four, taking one of marvel's greatest teams and plunging them out of their rut with a big sweeping sci fi plot, clever ideas like 4 great cities about to go to war, a council of far less moral reed richardses, and smaller scale but no less game changing ideas like havnig the fantastic four open up a think tank for children, the future foundation, finally once and for all resolving ben grimm's on and off state of being cured, and giving the richards kids fleshed out personalities.
I could gush about this run all day but i'll save that for next year.
The point is HIckman had a talent for big wordy sweeping epics and was quickly tapped to follow up Brian Micheal Bendis on avengers, which had also gotten old for some, expanding the team's scope, having a meta plot about the multiverse dying and combining a core of familiar faces (including hulk's first longterm run as an avenger), with people who had yet to wield the circle a like Cannonball, Sunspot and SHang Chi, giving all three a needed boost.
So him doing X-Men was a natural next step that seemingly just.. didn't happen. Ike Pearlmutter's attempt to dempahsises it probably is why and Hickman having completed his sweeping epic across several titles, was ready to go to dc. THen Marvel, desperate to revitalize the circle x.. offered it to hickman. And a thing I didn' tknow is while he got what made the ff and avengers work perfectly.. hickman wasn't a fan of either going in. He did his through homework and you honestly can't tell he dosen't, but X-Men on the otherhand was his teenage obession. Like me, it consumed him and he jumped at the chance to do it his way.
He also saw a franchise that post avx had stagnated, not really inovating and growing and gave it a shot in the arm. Just like New X-men before it, Hickman decided to ditch where the franchise had been stuck, in schools with never aging classes and wars with each other and try something entirley new, something that could not be walked back easily and that even going back to basics, the current run is still feeling the repurcussions of. With 6 golden words:
Hickman in his epic pair of mini series that are really one big 12 issue series, House of X and Powers of X flipped up the wohle gameboard and erased problems that had been plauging the x-men: The constant climate of fear? The X-Men decided to fuck off to their own island nation, Krakoa, the island that walks like a man and is now cool with them. Humanity hating and fearting them? still a problem but they can sue for peace with some mmmm drugs and deal with those who don't take the mmmmm drugs. And they could just give these mmmm drugs that cure brain diseases free but after the rampant genocides, not hyperbole they have a statistic
Their saying enough. And the various mutants killed off for shock value? Well... death no longer matters. In a game changing final reveal, mutants can now be revivied from teh dead thanks to 5 working in concert. Add in a meta riff with Moria Mactaggerts 10 lives and you have a brilliant start
And HIckman did'nt stop there, as his next book , X-Men and i'ts companion piece Giant Sized X-Men was less one long narrative and more a series of ideas for the universe he was creating, a series of brilliant one shots following Scott Summers in a good place in his life: His wife is back from the dead, their embracing polyamory so he can still see emma and Jean can see wolverine who lives with them, both their kids are alive and well. It's a dream. And with every issue hickman provided a great adventure from magneto standing against a tie in, to discovering Krakoa's lost sibling setting up the massive x of sowrds crossover, to a family roadtrip into space to dela with the brood, to the savage land ot fight the golden girls, to a hidden vault to face the future, there was never an end to his creatviity or clever ideas.
Sadly there was an end to his run with Inferno which left on a high tying up some threads and leaving the rest open for those to take up the sword after he left. Hickman's run is gorgeously drawn by a bevy of the best in the buisness, well throught out and stylish and I will likely read it forever. While Krakoa sadly didn't last this run stands forever as what it is : MUTANT.
2. X-Factor By Peter David Art by Peter David and Pablo Raimondi, Ryan Sook, Dennis Calero, Renato Arlem, Roy Allen Martinez, Khoi Pham, Scott Eaten, Valentine De Landro, Larry Stroman, Marco Santucci, Bing Cansino, Emanuela Lupacchino, Leonard Kirk, Neil Edwards, and Paul Davidson Madrox 1-5, V3 1-50, 200-262 , X-Factor The Quick and the Dead, X-Factor: Layla Miller and Nation X: X-Factor 119 Issues
Peter David might be my faviorite x-writer and is the other major reason I fell as hard for x-men as I did. Starting off at marvel with his character defining run on Incredible Hulk, he did a short stint on the x-side of things with X-Factor, following up the original run by focusing on a bunch of lesser focused mutants who weren't afraid to pepper things with jokes, weren't immune to tragedy, and threading a nice line between real danger and humor. It sadly didn't last long, but what we got was great.
So come the 2000's, he returned to marvel after a long stint at dc and another sensational run with young justice, Peter David asked "Are you ready for the sequel?" So came X-Factor, also known as X-Factor Noir to defretate it from the previous two runs, a decade long run rivaling Chris Claremonts in character, franchise impact and sheer girth. David's come the closest to Claremont's flair for shakeups, cast rotation and soap opera.
X-Factor primarily stars Jamie Madrox, an also ran mutant who could multiply who was the comic relief in David's previous run then kinda thrown aside like garbage and used in backgrounds. Clearly liking Jamie and seeing potential in him, David brought his boy back as a private eye working cases in mutant town. What was once the mutant burogh of new york is now filled with those who lost their powers on m-day, something our heroes also investigate as Wanda's mental breakdown wasn't exactly common knowledge.
Helping Jamie in his noir detective fantasy are Strong Guy, his best friend and the best character of the previous run, Wolfsbane, who was also on that team but is now older and angister, even more so after she leaves the team breifly to join x-force, Siryn, jamie's dupes ex and daughter of the banshee and M, monet st croix whose better than you and knows it. Monet is STILl a major fan faviorite and player to this day thanks to this run and everyone got a bump. This included later additons longshot and shatterstar, the latter of whom became a pansexual icon.
The run is massive and something I hope to cover someday in SOME form but loops our heroes as they do buisness in mutanttown, move to the east for goverment work, come back to nyc, and deal with everything from a manical man from the future to the invisible woman going missing. It's a fun run full of deep character development, well executed twists and while I used to feel it had a huge downturn, it seems far more coherent now.. though i'd still have to reread to see for sure. But what's ther eis one of the best runs in x-men , one of my faviorites.. and only one tops it you can transparently see coming
Uncanny X-Men By Chris Claremont Art by Dave Cockrum, John Byrne, Paul Smith, Frank Miller, John Romita Jr, Barry Windsor-Smith, Marc Silvestri, Rick Leonardi, John Bogdanove, Al Milgrom, and Jim Lee Uncanny X-Men 94-279, X-Men Annual #3-12, 14, Marvel Graphic Novel #1, Wolverine #1-4, Kitty Pryde and Wolverine #1-6,X-Men/ Alpha Flight #1 and 2, X-Men Vs Fantastic Four #1-4, X-Men #1-3 214 Issues
Hail to the King Baby. Having recently finally read EVERY issue of this run, I can say Chris Claremont defines the x-men. Even as things change, the basis was set by him. While Lee and Kirby created the x-men, Chris Clarmont made them truly exceptional.
Most of you don't need an intro but just in case: Chris Claremont was an up and coming writer at marvel who exploded when he took over x-men from Len Wein. Wein had relaunched the x-men with giant sized, creating a brand team with artist Dave Cockrum: Xaviers Original students were quickly written on in Wein's planneed next issue leaving only Cyclops, now moodier, as the vetral to command a group that was not 5 teenagers with attitude, later 7, but adults from radically diffrent backgrounds: A near feral and terse secret agent who once fought the hulk, a russian farm boy who can turn to steel, a woman from cairo who lived as a goddess in kenya, a former foe turned experinced ally, and a circus performer with the face of demon but the kindest soul of all.
Claremont would take this great setup and run with it once given full control. He reinforced the mutant metaphor which was present on and off in Lee's run, but now came blaring out, with the series first overarching villian being a mad scientest who speaks of mutants like a feral monster and has an army of shiny new sentinels, as opposed to the misguided previous users of them. The X-Men's rep takes a hit as the series goes and their forced to wipe goverment records as it plots against them. As the run goes on the racisim grows, as the goverment turns against them and the x-men are left as outcasts even among other heroes, going to war with both the ff and the avengers for diffrent reasons. In his most powerful use of this the x-men have to face Revered Striker, a fire and brimstone preacher with a secret paramilitary death squad.
But more than that he gave the franchise humanity: The X-Men here are fully fleshed out people: Scott strains under the role he's been given and trained since childhood and his rough past, Logan grows from a feral asshole who nearly kills nightcrawler for laughing at him, to Kurt's best friend and a wise if still gruff man who loves his found family. Ororo has the biggest evolution: from a shy woman discovering the world, to a goddess, to someone grappling with the darkness in her and the things she must do to keep her found family safe. Colossus grapples with the violence and confusion of his new world and of finding love even if it hurts someone he cares about. Things only get richer as new characters are rotated in: Jean is thought dead after joinnig breifly and leaves an impact and banshee goes to join his true love on a scottish island. This leaves the board open for Kitty Pryde, a 13 year old written shockingly well who grows up year by year and has to deal wtih the reality of being an x-man and of having a crush on a 19 year old and Rogue, who goes from a foe of the x-men they slam the door on badly haunted by her fractured psyche to.. well the last part dosen't go away but she's one of the most trusted x-men with time .
Claremont wasn't afraid to shake this up either: over the course of his run the x-men are thought dead by xavier and left to their own devices, loose jean, cyclops leaves, the mansion is breifly destroyed and their forced to live on magneto's spooky island, the new mutants arrive, and you never get a full sense of peace. When one status quo has set in a while, it flips. Just when the x-men were getting used to rachel summers, jean's troubled daughter from the days of future past, rachel flees and half the team is horribly mauled and they have to almost start over. The x-men sacrifie themselves and use their newfound supposed death to strike from the shaodow. and the final stretch of the run has the x-men scattered to the winds and coming back together.
Change is the constant as is a parade of intresting foes: Magneto is reconfigured from cackling super villian early on, to the troubled complicated man he becomes later, trying hard to be better while the world says no. The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants is reformed into a more modern for the time terroist group with the cunning mystique.. who tehn has the team work with the goverment when she finds that safer. Mastermind is taken from Magneto's lackey to a truly frightining figure whose only beaten because the person he was manipulating with. Then Claremont adds his own: The Hellfire Club, rich mutant assholes hiding in plain sight woh easily outflank our heroes, Nimrod, a robot from the future sent to kill mutants but who sees himself as a hero, the Brood, terrifying xenomorph knockoffs, and the Shadow King: Xavier's oldest and deadlist foe.
Ther'es a lot here: Our heroes go to space, grapple with demons literal nad metaphorical, spend time in the outback with a wiseman who can teleport, go to another dimension or two, there is FAR too much in this decade to recap but it is special
The run isn't without flaws and the age spots may be an issue: there's the entirely stupid and gross kitty pryde and colossus romance which is thankfully kept to mostly a crush but wolverine treats like Colossus wronged her by.. not wanting ot date a 13 year old and finding someone else. The bunche sof brainwashing. Kitty Pryde using the n-word twice. Coloring native american characters bright red. Ther'es a lot of stuff left over from the 80s in here that we'd rather throw back. Now Claremont's bdsm fetish on the other hand.. eh fair enough.
But if you can get past it, you'll find an epic like no other, one continuious story that nicely weaves with it's sister book new mutants. A story you can hop in at any point and enjoy (except maybe those last two years. Yeesh) yet as this glorious whole i've discovered now owning most of it and reading it often, it's a wonderful saga with tons of planning, and it'll likely never be topped in scope, though many of these fine runs equal it in quality. It's the basis for some of the best comic si've ever read, and I'm pleased to have read it all. Thanks for reading and please.. read some of these.

Hello there! Thank you for being so open about answering questions here, it's so interesting to see your processes. I was wondering if you might feel comfortable going into your thoughts and intentions behind your writing choices with Rahne Sinclair in your New Mutants run? It's probably the most controversial part of the run - especially to fans of the character from the original run from the 80s. Do you have any thoughts on the fan reaction as well?
A lot of comic writers fall into the trap of trying to energize a book or a fanbase by doing something shocking and new.
We are not above that temptation, and have fallen prey to it a couple of times, two in rapid succession.
The first was when we were asked to pitch what we'd do with Iron Man (years before the movie came out or was announced). We did the shocking thing - we killed him. Pitched an arc where Tony Stark was dying and did all he could to prevent it before he realized he couldn't. He'd die at the end of the arc, and his personality would go on to become the AI that powered the suit while others wore it.
We loved our grand, bold idea - not knowing how bad this would be if they were planning a movie featuring Tony Stark.
We didn't get that job, and all they told us is that they "had plans" for Tony and didn't want him dead.
Now, when we pitched New Mutants, we wanted to update some of our favorites from the classic team. And with Rahne, we knew the accent would likely have diminished over time - as it does with a lot of immigrants. But having had it spelled out on the page the way it had been during the classic New Mutants run meant this would be really noticeable.
Writing Rahne's return was right around this time we had that chance to pitch for Iron Man, and we didn't take the right lesson from not getting that gig - we'd chalked it up to bad timing. So we did it again, going for the big change - we decided to lean into how jarring losing the accent would be to the readers, and make it a deliberate choice on her part to reinvent herself because the wolf was no longer with her.
It made sense - she lost this part of herself and found herself inexplicably missing it. So she wanted to shake things up, shake herself up. Prove herself more adult, more American.
And that led to her being someone who would make a huge lapse in judgement as a teacher.
We thought it would get people talking.
It did, but not always in positive ways.
Like we said, writers do this a lot in comics. They want to make their mark, and shake things up.
In retrospect, a milder version without the kiss with Josh may have worked better. Perhaps having Dani able to talk about the other changes with her would have made them make sense a bit more.
But whatever the mistake was, we look back at it as mishandled. Not by Marvel, by us. We swung for the fences and didn't connect.
Live and learn.
These days, we're less inclined to want to shake things up so dramatically.
We've also seen enough teacher-student stories to know we don't want to write any more of them, so we totally get why that kiss still bothers Rahne fans to this day.
As we said, live and learn.
There isn't much we'd change about what we did on New Mutants and New X-Men (regardless of reactions to it), but there are a few big things.
And that kiss is one of them.

Post #73: NM issue 36 and UXM issue 202 and Secret Wars II issue 8
Last issue, Berto began to see the merits in Max as a headmaster, but their relationship is far from being in a solid place, as we see here. In Asgard, Berto loved being a hero, but now he's back in the real world, where he sees Xavier as another in the line of people he wasn't able to save. Between that and the disheartening existence of the Beyonder, he's fed up with the idea of being a hero, which puts him at odds with Max. When Xavier first brought the New Mutants to the school, he was insistent that they'd never become X-Men, but it's obvious to the reader that that's what'll happen eventually. Over time, Xavier kinda shifted his mindset, but it's always been a little vague to the New Mutants what their future at the school is. While Xavier hoped he could make a future where the New Mutants wouldn't have to fight, Max knows that's not possible, so he's training them not just to control their powers but increase them. For some, like Sam, that's appealing, but Berto is wondering why he's still at the school. We shift focus to Illyana, who's greeted by the Beyonder again. He's come to help her, which he does by removing the evil from her soul, making her the person she could have been if not for Belasco. The Beyonder shares a part of his essence with her, and she begins to see him as a benevolent overlord who can bring all of humanity to their full potential if they join him. She goes to the New Mutants to try to convert them to the Beyonder's side, and shockingly, they resist. Their fight is interrupted when the other plot thread comes into play: when the Beyonder cast out Illyana's evil magic, it latched onto Kitty, who's soul is linked to Illyana's in a totally platonic way. It's the same reason Kitty was able to wield the soulsword in the last tie-in. Because of other separate Beyonder shenanigans in Power Pack, there are some demons invading New York, and when the soulsword falls to Kitty, she picks it up and fights a demon that appears in front of her. This demon is from Limbo, and takes advantage of Kitty's inexperience to overpower her and try to use her for his spells. Along with the soulsword, Illyana's bloodstone pendant transfered to Kitty, and the demon begins filling it with Kitty's soul. To save her friend and the world, Illyana has to reclaim the evil part of her soul, which drives the Beyonder's essence and influence out of her. She successfully sends the demon back to Limbo and saves Kitty, but is left despairing how she'll never be free of Belasco's corruption. To be honest, this issue didn't really make any sense. I love Illyana, but we've seen a lot of "I hate this evil part of me, but I can use it for good, so maybe there's hope for me yet," and usually it's better than this. It probably would have been a lot better if there had been another catalyst for the Big Evil switching to Kitty, but with this plot combined with the Beyonder brainwashing it just gets confusing and very abrupt. I'd have much preferred Berto or Rahne be the one to be imbued with essence of Beyonder, or Amara since she has nothing to do. This is definitely the weakest of Claremont's six SWII tie-ins, but the next issue of New Mutants will be his best.
Anna enters Rachel's room to find a holographic message left by Rachel, telling her team that she's gone to kill the Beyonder. They rush to track her on Cerebro, where they're shocked to see Rachel's energy signature stronger than any mutant since Jean's death. Finding her enemy on Alcatraz Island, Rachel unleashes her full power on the Beyonder, but it doesn't affect him in the slightest. He tells her that his new purpose is to heal and guide others, and he begins by timeshifting them to Rachel's future, where she helplessly watches the scenes of her family dying. He also shows her Kate dying at the hands of Nimrod, the first confirmation for Rachel that it's the same Nimrod, although that's not addressed here. He then offers her a choice. He augments her power to the point where she could destroy him. But he also teleports the X-Men (minus Kurt) to their location and throws a bunch of future Sentinels at them, telling Rachel she could kill him, but it would take all her strength and leave her unable to save them. She doesn't hesitate to choose the X-Men. She has to hold back to avoid causing too much destruction with power she isn't used to, but with her help the X-Men are able to destroy the Sentinels and keep all the civilians safe. The fighting takes most of the issue, but I'm not complaining cause it's some really good action. It's also great to see Max fighting as an official X-Man in the field for the first time. At the end, Rachel returns to the Beyonder and tells him that as long as he keeps using his powers to play God, all he'll ever do is harm people before she flies off, disgusted.
I don't think there was very good communication on the transition between these two issues. At the start of SWII 8, the Beyonder is chilling in San Francisco when Rachel flies up with the X-Men and tries to kill him, which doesn't really line up with the ending of last issue. The Beyonder tells her that she only had a chance before because he allowed it and swats them all off before teleporting to New York. He has some more adventures there, including a very brief fight with the New Mutants, and after some deliberation and a short time skip, he decides to destroy the multiverse cause he's been having a bad time lately.
These issues were a mixed bag. NM 36 had some good stuff, but the tie-in parts made that stuff a lot worse. The Uncanny issue was actually pretty okay. And SWII issue 8 was one of the better issues of that series, but still not great. It's almost over.

Rahne x Reader (f)- Fetch (short)
Y/nPOV
I throw the ball down the hill waiting for it to be brought back.
This continued for a while until Rahne got tired. Even though shes a human, she has a lot of energy that has to be released. so , Fetch. its fun, at least she says it is.
I laid my back of the grass, looking up at the sky. its about 3:00 pm. I heard Running come up the hill, i sat up and held out my hand for the ball " why don't you take a break. You've been running up and down the hill for a while now." i said as Rahne sat down and dropped the ball. I laid back down on my back, she put her wolf head on my stomach and I rubbed her head. I soon fell asleep.
few hours later
"hey, wake up. we have to go back in." I heard as I woke up. I groaned and rubbed my eyes " just a few more minutes please." and I turned over on my side "no, y/n we have to back in. the doors will close soon." Rahne said as she pulled my arms up. "okay okay. I'm not a ragdoll." I stood up and opened my eyes, Rahne wearing the clothes we packed so she wouldn't be naked after she turned back. "Did you stay out here the whole time?" I asked itching head. It's Note to self don't sleep on grass without a blanket. " yeah, you were more tired then me, so I stayed out here with you."she answered opening the door to the main building.
We took the halls leading to the concert room. Enjoying each other present for like little while we had before the morning. And to think, this all started a year ago with a game of fetch.

“You’re pretty.” Rahne said while looking up at you as she laid on your lap. You gently played with her hair, massaging her scalp as she stared at you with a smile.
“Not from this angle.” You quietly laughed and continued on. “I like the quiet in here. Even if there is a bit of echo.”
“Me, too.” Your girlfriend agreed and lifted her head from your lap to give you a quick kiss. “And I like the privacy so Illyana isn’t bothering us.” She joked, but still meant it.
“I cable wait to get out of here someday.” You grabbed ahold of her and and put your back against the cool metal.
“Hope it’s sooner rather than later.”

Yay! Finally someone who will! I've been thinking a lot of this weird AU where theyre at the X school, tell me what you think! Prompt: Starting at the end of the movie, the gang finds themselves at the school for mutants. Sam & reader (name doesnt matter!) have a hard time fitting in/adjusting at the school and find themselves getting closer and closer, until they finally become an item!
Sam x reader
Your very nervous,
it’s the only think you can really think of.
Panic isnt right for the scenario.
And fear sounds to dramatic.
But your very nervous of this new Mutant school.
And that sounds correct.
Sam stands besides you, holding your hand in support.
You blush and look away. He doesn’t know you like him.
Shame.
Shame on you.
You want to feel excited that he’s holding your hand. It feels warm against your sweaty palm.
But you’ve seen him with Illyana. And are convinced he likes her.
“Hey Luke!” Roberto calls out.
You look over.
“That one metal guy asked for our last names. What’s yours?”
Truth be told, you’ve never told them your last name. You never wanted to. It was best to remain inconspicuous. Tell the least amount of information.
It was best.
“O is fine Berto.” You speak in your Yorkshire accent.
“Luke. O,” Illy states drily, “Wow I feel like I know you so much now.”
“Illy,” Sam mutters protectively. Him and Dani are the only ones brave enough to really say anything to her.
The Russian just rolls her eyes in response. Dani leans in, whispering something no one can hear.
Illy nods. But does nothing else.
“Shall we go’n now?” You ask.
Everyone nods but illy. Who instead pulls out Lockheed. Holding him close.
You think you understand. Lockheed was her comfort, her security. Something you wish you had right now.
Everyone walks in. But no one is at ease. The place is large. Filled with people bustling around. A guy with green skin nearly bumps into you, but Sam pulls you out of the way in time.
“Thanks,” you blush, “Uh, thanks.”
“Course.” He nods.
This blonde woman walks over. Briefly glowing blue. She blinks a few times and they dim to normal.
“Hello,” she introduces, “I’m Esme. Some call me Cuckoo, others stepford. But you can call me Frost.”
The others look at her apprehensively.
The blonde shrugs, “Esmes cool too.”
Her eyes glow once again.
“Ugh, be quiet!” She snaps.
You flinch backwards, and Esme offers a apologetic smile.
“Sorry,” she reaches up a pale finger, tapping it once against her mind, “Sisters.”
The woman doesn’t offer any more words then that. So you nod uneasily.
She starts to walk forward, and everyone looks at each other before following.
“We have a lot of cool things here,” the mutant starts talking, “Thermal rooms for Berto to flame in. Chains and gear outside for Sam. Courses for Rahne to run, and even something for Dani!”
Esme abruptly stops. You nearly crash into her if it wasn’t for Sam.
“How do you know who’s who?” Dani questions nervously.
She turns around, staring at everyone with intently piercing eyes.
“I know things. Now,” she swivels her head to glance at you and Illyana, “Your thoughts are unexplainable. I should say unhelpful. You, Luke, are thinking to hard.”
You blush. But you don’t know why.
The eyes trail to stare at Illy.
“And your having a conversation with no one?”
The Russian glares.
“Not true. I’m having one with Lockheed!”
Esme looks confused, “Where is he.”
Illy blushes, but holds up the puppet for her to observe.
You notice Dani grabbing her free hand. Rubbing her thumb over her knuckles soothingly.
Esme blinks, and then they glow again.
“Ah. He’s your friend. Back in limbo.”
Illy jerks, “How do you know that.”
The woman smiles, “All in a telepaths work.”
Everyone takes a subtle step back. So that’s why she walked in front of them. So they couldn’t see her eyes.
You immediately try and think of nothing, but somehow think of Sam instead. Esme looks at you with curiosity, but thankfully says nothing.
Her eyes glow again, momentarily making her face blank and stony.
“Oh.”
She looks embarrassed almost, “Um. I just received word that you aren’t needed at the main office yet. Your free to explore. Just don’t break anything.”
You look at her, trying to find an earpiece of some kind. She notices you and raises her eyebrow defensively.
Esme then turns around and leaves, whispering “Sophie! Phoebe! Shut up!” On her way out.
“Uh,” you turn back to your group, only to find them all gone except Sam, “Thanks for staying.”
He nods, “I wouldn’t leave you.”
You blush again. And look away.
The day goes on. As you and Sam struggle to find something that works for you. Roberto was psyched at being given clothes that don’t burn when he flames up. Rahne loved the obstacle course. And Dani was interested in practicing her powers.
Illy hadn’t said anything. Just gnawed on her thumbnail and talked to Lockheed.
You and Sam had tried to find the chain thing outside. But their was too many people. And it made Sam feel claustrophobic.
“I feel like we don’t belong here.” You confess later on.
He looks at you understandingly, “I get what you mean. Though I don’t think Illy likes it either.”
You roll your eyes, “She doesn’t like anything.”
“Hey,” he snaps quietly, “She has reasons not to like things.”
You nod, “Sorry. I forget.”
He looks at you. His kind eyes making you blush.
“Why do you do that?”
“H-huh?”
“Why do you blush around me.” He wonders.
“I-um,” you falter, “I k-Kinda like you.”
He doesn’t respond and you immediately get up to leave.
“Wait!” He grabs your wrist, spinning you around.
You don’t have time to process anything before he kisses you, his lips surprisingly soft.
“I like you to O.”
You smile.
Maybe this place was ok after all.
hey!!! I hope you liked this! Tried to incorporate everything you wanted! 🥰

Rahne Sinclair (Wolfsbane): General HC
- Originally, Rahne is drawn to you because of your appealing smell. I swear it’s not creepy! It’s just a wolf thing.
- The two of you are like pea’s in a pod! She’s an amazing friend and would do literally anything for you.
- Slowly, she starts to feel different about you. She wants to be more than just friends.
- However, due to her very religious upbringing, homosexuality is certainly something she sees as “taboo”.
- She definitely struggles with internalized homophobia, being unsure of what to do with her very strong feelings for you.
- After discussing it with Dani, she’s able to slowly accept how she feels. It’s hard for her, but she wants to do it.
- Nervous about perusing you romantically. She isn't experienced with this kind of stuff!
- When you accept her confession she's over the moon!
- Loves physical contact.
- Lays her head on you all the time. On your shoulder, your thighs, your back. She’s just all over you!
- Super loyal and dedicated. You could say she’s... Never gonna give you up...
- Even after you two start dating, she’s still insecure about her body and more boyish appearance. However, if you like it, her views on it might change.
- Her confidence will sky-rocket any time you compliment her.
- “Short hair really suits you Rahne!” “R-Really? (๑´•ω • `๑)”
- You two make such a great couple!
these ended kinda abruptly but i ran out of juice lol

Secrets of mutation
Logan(wolverine) x reader
Warnings: Age gap, student/teacher, AOB, trauma, swearing, sexual, intimate, a little forceful, anxiety
Xmen/new mutants
AOB will be referred to second gender xD
The alarms were blaring in your ear when you woke. Startled and uncoordinated you got out of bed and looked out the door seeing no one but flashing lights, what the hell was going on?
You remember waking up in this strange place, handcuffed to a bed in some strange room filled with other empty hospital beds. You don’t remember much from before, your past blurry. A woman had come in, a tablet in hand as she scanned you with something.
“Where am I?” You asked.
“Who are you?!” You added tugging at the cuffs.
“Calm down Miss Y/n, my name is Dr Reyes, you’re at a facility” you frowned at her words.
“What facility?” You questioned.
“A facility for mutants like yourself” she said typing down something.
“You do know what mutants are yes?” You nodded to her question.
“I’m- not a mutant” you trailed off a little unsure.
“You are Y/n, a little late in showing but none the less, a mutant” she walked to your cuffs and you flinched as she unlocked them.
“What’s my mutation?” You asked rubbing your wrists.
“We have yet to figure that out” she smiled.
“I’ll show you around”
It was more of a cage for mutants than a program, you learnt after some time, the others you were with didn’t appreciate new blood apparently except Sam, Danny and Rahne. You were finding it difficult to present your power to anyone and yourself. Rahne said she could sense you differently from the others, you were unsure why though. As it became more clear you weren’t getting out you began to freak out. Your mind forcefully trying to figure out what happened before, your parents, your life? You couldn’t remember any of it, just flashes of faceless people and laughs. You got nightmares every night, something different each time, a jumble of memories perhaps. When those alarms rang though you sought nothing but freedom.
You had found the others as they looked around confused also. You all had headed outside a jet of some sort landing nearby.
“Who the hell is that?” Roberto asked.
“How are we supposed to know?!” Rahne yelled as a voice filled your head.
“It’s alright” it said as the jet opened and an old man came out on a wheelchair.
“No!” You heard Dr Reyes stumbling out as a orange bubble surrounded you. You were suffocating in it as you fell to your knees gasping for breath, desperately bashing on the force.
You had awoken to soft beeping, before it slowly picked up much like your heart beat. You looked around this feeling to familiar when someone walked in.
“You’re awake” she said as you stared at her, machine beating rapidly.
“What’s going on?!” You tugged against the tubes on you and panicked.
“Calm down” she said rushing to you quickly.
“My names Storm” she said and you frowned.
“You’re at professors Xaviers school” you frowned at her words.
“School?” You questioned looking around the high tech medical lab.
“Well above us is the school” she chuckled.
“You might know us better by the xmen” she said and you still stared.
“Took us a while to find your facility, I’m afraid you’re not the only one who was in that situation, they’re happening everywhere” she sighed sadly.
“That shield around it blocked the Professor out for a while till he got in” you laid back down, head spinning.
“Are the others ok?” You asked.
“They’re fine, getting use to the school, Magik causing some trouble but she’ll adapt” she stood by your bed.
“I-I don’t know my mutation” you mumbled.
“That’s why the professors here” she said softly as someone walked in. You sat up again seeing the old man in the chair.
“I’m not that old” he chuckled and you flushed.
“I didn’t-“ you frowned at him.
“My mutation my dear, I can hear people’s thoughts” he smiled stopping by your bed.
“Oh” you said.
“Don’t worry I won’t scope around in their unless you require me too” he chuckled you crossed your arms awkwardly.
“Bad joke I’m afraid” he said as Storm chuckled.
“How are you feeling?” He asked.
“Um?” You said.
“Yes I’d imagine this situation is rather stressful but we are here to help” he offered a warm smile.
“I don’t know what to do- I don’t remember my past apart from waking up in that facility, nor do I know my mutation” you said.
“Yes, the facility’s, the Essex’s program give you a serum that takes away your memories of your past life, to better focus the mind” he sighed.
“As for your mutation I can help you find it” he smiled.
“Essex’s program?” You asked.
“Yes there are secret facility’s around the world, covered by the orange shield, they hold powerful mutants in there for testing, turn them into weapons with no memories” he spoke grimly, his eyes downcast.
“It’s hard for me to get through the shield without causing a big war” he sighed.
“These programs are made by the government, to test on mutants the deem powerful and dangerous and turn them into killers in the future” he looked to the woman who had a saddened face also.
“It’s hard to find you all” she said sadly.
“Terrible thing” she added.
“Come, I’ll show you around the school, lighten your mood a bit” the Professor smiled. You stood slowly thankful your clothes were still on and not some stupid hospital gown. You followed the Professor through a bright hall and into an elevator.
As the door opened again you were stunned by the house and smells. Old but clean with students walking around.
“They’re all mutants” the Professor said as you looked to each one as you walked.
“We have classes upstairs and down stairs, down the end here is the cafeteria” he pointed down the hall and you nodded.
“Back this way is the smaller kitchen and toilets along with rooms on the left side” he added pointing out each room.
“The floor below us is where you train, like for PE and fighting” he said.
“There’s a courtyard and plenty of room outside as well as in” he smiled going up the stairs.
“Professor!” You jumped as someone called.
“Ah Logan” you turned with the professor seeing the man coming towards you. You were hit with something though, an overwhelming scent and you held a hand over your nose.
“What?” The man said.
“I don’t stink that bad” he sniffed himself and you shook your head.
“No Logan I don’t think she understands our second gender” the Professor said and you frowned.
“Jesus kid” the man muttered.
“Did you need something Logan?” The Professor asked.
“Yeah that girl you found her with Magik? She’s causing a bloody mess again” he huffed hands on his hips and you perked up.
“Shall we go see your friends?” The Professor asked and you nodded. As you walked away from the man you glanced back meeting his gaze. You gulped looking away and speeding up a bit.
“Y/n!” Rahne was the first to run to you. You sighed hugging them tightly. Danny joined and you felt tears in your eyes. Sam came over too and you chuckled giving him a hug also.
“You guys ok?” You asked pulling back.
“We’re fine” Rahne said.
“How are you?” Sam asked.
“I’m ok, I think” you gulped a little glancing to the professor.
“You’ve been out a couple of days” Danny said and you frowned.
“Really?” You asked and she nodded.
“Was worried you weren’t gonna get up” you turned seeing Roberto and went to hug him.
“I get a hug?” He said in awe and you chuckled shaking your head.
“Where is your friend Magik?” The Professor asked.
“Outside in her little world” Roberto sighed.
“She hasn’t taken a liking to this place” Rahne said.
“She never liked being cooped up anyway” you shrugged.
“Y/n are you happy to stay here while I go talk to her?” The Professor asked.
“Yeah, thank you” you whispered and he smiled leaving.
You sat on the couch sighing, head hung back.
“We’re really at Professor Xaviers school” Danny said in little awe.
“The xmen” you mumbled.
“Yep” Rahne said.
“Seems strange we weren’t sent here- but then again we were in a secret program” Sam said.
“Secret program of psychos” Roberto grumbled.
“I don’t understand why I was there though” you said saddened.
“I don’t know my powers, I don’t know anything apparently” you sighed leaning your head in your hands.
“What’s the second gender?” You asked.
“You don’t know?” Roberto asked surprised.
“No” you mumbled.
“The second gender is-“ Sam stuttered on his words.
“Alpha, Beta, Omega” Rahne said and you frowned.
“I don’t understand?” You said.
“It’s a ranking system almost” Roberto spoke up.
“When you hit puberty is when you know your rank, Alphas are the-“ before Roberto could speak Danny interrupted.
“Alphas are hot headed idiots” she rolled her eyes as Roberto huffed like a child.
“Betas are in the middle class, omegas in the bottom and alphas at the top” Rahne said.
“What are you guys?” You said.
“Robertos an alpha so is Sam and Illyana, I’m a beta and so is Danny” you frowned at Rahne words.
“What am I?” You said.
“You’re an omega” Sam muttered.
“So I’m beneath you?” You questioned.
“No it- it doesn’t work like that” he sighed.
“Then how does it work?” You asked desperate.
“I can’t explain it’s always been there” Sam shrugged.
“What the hell” you mumbled sinking into to the couch more.
“I’m sure the professor can help you” Rahne held your hand as you tried to smile and nod. You didn’t know your past, your powers, your second gender? Who even were you?

Post #70: NM Special Edition issue 1 and UXM Annual issue 9
These two super-size issues are the biggest and most direct crossover between the two teams that we've had so far, the Asgardian Wars. The penciller for both issues is Art Adams, an up and coming artist who got his start with the Longshot miniseries that was in publication around this time. His art kinda makes me think of mid-nineties stuff if it had soul and personality, which is to say it's very good, with a lot of over the top detail that makes everything pop. He draws a fantastic Warlock, which as I said is very important; Adams's version is more physically defined than Sienkiewicz's, but still with a lot of chaos in his motion. I promise I won't go into every single artist's Warlock, but I will occasionally mention the different takes on him and this one is one of my favorites. Anyway, we start off with Loki planning his revenge on the X-Men (he doesn't mention Alpha Flight, and I don't know if that happens in the Alpha Flight book). He can't harm them directly, but he has big plans to manipulate Ororo and he sends his lackey the Enchantress to go painfully kill the X-Men. Ororo and the New Mutants are chilling on a Mediterranean island. Most of the kids are on the beach, except for Xuân, who's in town wishing she was dead while Ororo tells her not to wish that. There's a few pages of the kids hanging out showing off their personalities to potential new readers until a freak storm hits the island, followed by an army of magical warriors in Asgardian armor. The Enchantress appears and teleports them all away. Ororo is sent to Loki, who begins casting spells on her to place her under his influence and control. Meanwhile, the Enchantress has the New Mutants in her own evil lair, believing them to be the X-Men. Illyana tries to teleport everyone away, but the Enchantress's magic makes her power go all wonky and the team is scattered across the realms and across time, except for Illyana herself, who remains the Enchantress's captive. Xuân finds herself in the middle of a desert and decides to just wait for death to come. Doug is in a viking hall, where the drunken lord of the hall almost immediately decides to enslave him. There's something pathetically ironic about Doug, the New Mutant who's always most excited to go on adventures, ending up scrubbing floors while the rest of the team meets gods and gets power-ups. Rahne is teleported to a forest and is attacked by giants but is saved by a telepathic wolf. Warlock is teleported to Hel, where to survive he has to infect and drain a giant dragon. He feels guilty, because Dani told him not to absorb creatures that big. He then makes what I believe is his first joke ever, which is a big moment for him- he thinks about how finding his friends will be a longshot, so he shapeshifts into the appearance of Longshot. This is very weird, because they haven't met yet. I'd chalk this one up to a continuity goof/promotion for Art Adam's other major work. Hela approaches him and says her realm is the afterlife for those who died either without honor or as cowards; Warlock says he's a coward and flees. Poor Warlock really needs a self esteem boost if he still thinks that after all he's risked for his friends. Berto, like Doug, was transported to a mead hall, but unlike him is doing very well. His strength is boosted under this sun, so he's winning arm wrestlers with all the Asgardians until one of them harasses a waitress. He punches the guy out the window and then gets jumped by all his friends, who he beats up, to the admiration of all the hot waitresses. Amara is with a bunch of fey folk, who give her food that turns out to be enchanted. Sam is in Nidavellir, the land of the dwarves. When some trolls attack a dwarf lady, Sam doesn't hesitate to go to her rescue, getting her to safety before collapsing from a spear that one of the trolls got into his back. Dani is in a field, where she finds a pegasus grounded in a barbed net. She rescues him and begins to feel a special bond, but they're soon attacked by the hunters who ensnared the pegasus in the first place. Dani holds them off until she's saved by a warrior on another pegasus. We now cycle back through the cast for follow-up scenes; Illyana is being tortured by the Enchantress, who's fascinated by her power and magical defenses. She teaches into Illyana's soul and pulls out the Darkchylde side of her, giving it a physical form and sending it off to find her friends. Xuân is ready to embrace death when she sees a child being chased by a giant snake. She possess it and sends it off, and the child hugs her and thanks her for being her savior. Doug is rescued from his sad little adventure when Darkchylde arrives for him with an army of demons. Luckily, Warlock gets there at the same time (although I have no idea how he got from Hel to Agard, I guess he just found a random portal?) and grabs Doug and flies off. I think this is the first time we've seen the Doug/Warlock duo on their own. Up until now, Rahne has been Warlock's best friend, but the book is shifting focus to this friendship for Warlock, a great decision for both characters and for the overall team dynamic. Rahne's savior reveals himself to be the prince of the forest, who can transform into a werewolf state that matches Rahne's. They start kissing, but she leaves, both because she's afraid of what she's feeling and to find her friends. Berto is living it up in the mead hall when the Warriors Three (Thor's sidekicks) come in, having heard about him. They're impressed by his strength and take him out to party with them. Sam has been rescued by the dwarf Eitri and his daughter Kindra, who explain that Odin and Thor have disappeared during the recent Surtwar (which happened in the Thor book). Nidavellir is currently at war with the dark elves, and speak of the devil here they come now. They're led by Amara, who was transformed body and soul into a dark elf but retains her powers. Sam defends his new friends, and to his shock gets a slight burn from Amara even when he's blasting, the first time he's ever been damaged while in his active state. He hopes it's just because of his injury, but doesn't want to find out. He and Eitri quickly end the battle and imprison Amara, who's mind Eitri promises he can restore with dwarven magic. Sam is very worried about his team; he has no idea when or where any of them are. He wishes there was someone to take the burden of leadership, but he knows it's on him and accepts it. He's very different than Dani, who aspires and rises to leadership. But both are great leaders and together form a team that's more than their sum. Speaking of Dani, for her it's been a few weeks, which she's spent hanging out with the other mysterious pegasus riders and her own pegasus, who she's named Brightwind, and searching for the New Mutants across this realm. When she overhears the others saying some creepy stuff about Dani and a blood oath, she flies off with Brightwind. For Xuân, it's been months, which she's spent keeping herself and the child alive by hunting and scavenging as they search for life. She's still hopeless, but no longer willing to give up life now that she has someone to take care of. Unlike everyone else, Berto is having the time of his life. He's worried about his friends, but doesn't know where to start looking, so the Warriors Three are asking around about leads while he parties and flirts. It comes to an end when Darkchylde appears and puts him in a magic mind control armor. Meanwhile, Amara is in control of her mind again, but is still an elf who can't survive in the mortal realm. She and Sam are scared of what her future could be, even if they find their team. Loki turns Ororo into a falcon to disguise her and goes to visit Eitri. He demands the dwarf build a new hammer for a new thunder god, and his plan for Ororo begins to come together in front of our eyes. After he leaves, Sam realizes the falcon was Ororo, because it still had her eyes and mohawk for some reason, and Eitri, pissed that Loki would threaten him, promises to help Sam take Loki down. Rahne is searching for any sign of her friends. She wants to accept her feelings for the wolf prince, but fears it's sinful. The dilemma is resolved when Darkchylde and evil Berto find her and put her in a magic mind control armor too. Xuân and her ward finally make it out of the desert and are greeted by Doug and Warlock. For them, it's only been a week, but for Xuân, enough time has passed to loose all the weight that Farouk put on her. The child with her suddenly disappears, replaced by a string in Xuân's hand. As explained by Darkchylde, who shows up right then, this means the child was a spell cast by the Fates to give Xuân motivation. A fight begins, but luckily Sam and Amara, guided by dwarf magic, and Dani and Brightwind, guided by luck I guess, arrive at the same time. Enchantress, viewing through her slave's eyes from afar, recognizes Dani as a Valkyrie, which she herself doesn't know. Xuân possesses Darkchylde, but the Enchantress doesn't realize it since the possession shatters her scrying crystal for vague magicy reasons. So she's surprised when the whole team shows up at her door, Berto and Rahne freed from their armor and Darkchylde under Xuân's control. They all start fighting her, including Doug, since Warlock turned himself into a power armor for his friend. They buy enough time for Xuân to merge Darkchylde back into Illyana, restoring her to health and power, before possessing the Enchantress. She makes her turn off the wards that messed with Illyana's power, and Illyana takes everyone to Limbo. She gives the Enchantress to S'ym as a prisoner, telling him to torture her to his hearts content. The team prepares to head off for war with Loki. This was a fantastic issue with a lot to unpack, but I'll save that for after I've read part 2 in the Uncanny annual.
This issue begins with Kitty having a nightmare through her still vague soullink with Illyana. She sees Ororo is Asgardian clothes casting lightning bolts with Loki watching. Rachel uses her own power to trace the vision back through to Illyana's location in Asgard. The X-Men plan a rescue mission. Madelyne has joined Scott at the mansion, since he's gonna be sticking around to deal with the Xavier/Magneto situation. He decides to come out of his retirement to lead the mission to Asgard and promises her he'll be back soon and safe. Everyone is shocked when Rachel comes back from suiting up in a Phoenix costume. She tells them it's her new codename but not about the Phoenix Force. The whole team is shaken, especially Scott, but he keeps his head in the game. He still has Arkon's lightning bolts from way back when that allow for teleportation between realms, so he throws some on the ground and off goes the team. They miscalculated slightly, and end up in Rahne's forest, where they save her wolf prince from some trolls. Hela appears to claim the souls of the trolls that Logan killed, and she recognizes Rachel as Jean's daughter, although she keeps the references vague. She says Rachel's mother was one of her greatest servants, and she hopes Rachel will live up to her body count. Meanwhile, the New Mutants are getting ready for battle. Sam and Amara are helping Eitri forge the Uru hammer Loki requested, which they plan to deliver personally so they can ambush him. Eitri gives Sam a final parting gift- unbreakable magic armor and a sword that can cut through any non-living thing. Doug is transcribing the Enchantress's spellbooks for Illyana while Warlock scouts Loki's castle until he's shot down by the god, who thinks he's a weird bird. There's a lot of drama and tension in the team due to how their adventures have changed them and the desire that many of them have to never return to Earth. I'll get into all that at the end of this post so I can have the full overview and not go off on too big a tangent. The wolf prince has filled the X-Men in on the whole situation, and Scott sends Logan, Kitty, and Rachel to scout the city. Rachel is refusing to talk to Kitty about her new Phoenix codename or what Hela said. The way Rachel is closing herself off is exactly like her dad, who Kitty suspects has figured out Rachel's identity but hasn't said anything. In the city, Dani, Berto, and Doug find Warlock, who's been heavily wounded by Loki's arrow. At the sight of Dani, Warlock goes crazy and flies off with Doug. Dani's been getting a lot of terrified looks; she doesn't yet know that it's because as a Valkyrie, she's a grim reaper to Asgardians and apparently to Warlock now too. After running for a while, Warlock collapses dying, but Doug offers to let Warlock merge with him temporarily and take some of his lifeforce to sustain him. The rest of the X-Men, led by the wolf prince, go to the castle to find Rahne, Xuân, and Illyana, who's slowly being corrupted by using the Enchantress's dark magic. The reunion ends when Loki appears and captures them all. He takes them to his lair and monologues about how Illyana's corruption, amplified by his own magic, will spread to the X-Men, destroying them while not technically breaking his oath. He puts magic enslaving collars on the two wolves and sends them off to find the other mutants, who have all met up and joined forces in the city. Just before the minions of Loki ambush our heroes, Dani sees a skull over Logan and is overcome with dread. We learn why a moment later when the enemies attack, including a dragon that bites and poisons Logan. Sam's magic sword frees Rahne, but her prince runs off with the rest of the villains, who take Amara prisoner with the Uru hammer. The remaining heroes split into two teams; Kitty, Rahne, and Sam go to the dungeons, while Logan, Dani, Rachel, Warlock, Berto, and Doug go to interrupt the ceremony where Loki is putting his plan for Ororo into motion. Berto gets some interesting moments with Logan; the latter chastises him for wanting to stay in Asgard, and when the fight begins and Logan collapses from illness, Berto is apparently inspired and calls Loki bub. Loki gives Ororo the hammer, turning her into the new god of thunder, but Logan collapses at her feet, giving her the emotional boost she needs to break out of Loki's hold. Hela arrives for Logan's soul. She tells Dani the truth about her new powers, but Dani refuses to act as Hela's hand. While this was going on, the other team found the dungeon just after Xuân used her power to break Illyana from Loki's spell. They all go upstairs and join Ororo in blasting Hela, who's driven off by the combined power. The battle finally ends when Kitty tells Loki that all of Asgard has seen this battle and won't accept him as their ruler. He agrees to send everyone home, but as one final fuck you he says he'll only do it if they return the Enchantress and all agree to go back and lose all the powers they've gotten on their adventures, with the exception of Dani. Loki doesn't have authority over Valkyries, so Dani will continue to be one and take Brightwind with her. He once again offers Ororo a place by his side as a god, but she rejects him, and after everyone else agrees, he angrily sends them all back to Midgard, foiled again. I didn't like this issue quite as much as the first chapter, probably because it had twice the cast size and about 25% less pages, but that issue set an incredible bar, and this one was still really great.
Since every New Mutant and half the X-Men got important character development, I decided to skip over a lot of the character beats so I could put them all here for my own sanity. I'll start with Illyana; the Enchantress is the first evil sorceress she's met, and it brings out a new side of her both literally and figuratively. The Enchantress really should be a cautionary tale for Illyana of what happens if she gives in to dark urges and magics, but Illyana's hubris gets the better of her. She sends her enemy off to be tortured by S'ym and then embraces corruption in her spellbooks. There's no consequences, either; the heroes won and Loki removes the corruption from her, so she doesn't learn her lesson. Illyana does questionable things without consequences a lot, and none of her friends will realize what this corruption pattern is leading to until it's too late. Xuân had a really interesting story in the first chapter; I'm glad her new will to live came from her sense of responsibility rather than another pep talk. The twist that it was all a plan from the Norns to change her destiny had huge potential, but her plotline was dropped completely in chapter 2, I guess for time reasons. I hope it's followed up on in the main book. I'm also glad the weird "obesity is a metaphor for Farouk's corruption" thing is gone, although the implication that losing weight=redemption was kinda gross. Doug and Warlock's development in this arc wasn't really significant for what happened in the story but for what it sets up as their friendship continues to grow. Amara, as usual, gets by far the least focus. Over the course of this story, she's transformed into a faery, making her act very weird and different, but it's barely explored before the changes are reversed at the end. Giving Amara a story that could impact her after the arc is over could have been the new direction her character needs, but by the end she's back where she started. Rahne, on the other hand, starts a journey that's still impacting her today. I don't think she ever even learned her wolf prince's name, but he's impacted her a lot. They were true kindred spirits, attracted to each other both as animals and as werewolves. She's had a crush on Sam, but these feelings are a lot stronger, and it scares her and makes her hate herself for being sinful, because she doesn't do that enough. She probably gave up the most by agreeing to return to Earth, which speaks to how much she cares about her friends. Berto has a really cool little journey. Lately he's been getting really fed up with being a mutant. It's caused a lot of pain and death in his life, which he feels responsible for, and in return for being heroes he and his friends are hated and feared. But in Asgard, he's admired by women and respected by heroes for his power. He's initially the most enthusiastic about staying in Asgard, where he can be a superhero without the hardships. But Logan chewing him out and Dani defying Hela make him realize that staying in Asgard wouldn't be accepting his destiny, it would be running from it. I also really liked when he called Loki "bub;" he and Logan don't have much of a relationship before or after this story, but Berto clearly looks up to him even if he won't admit it. Berto's doubts are still there, but the fact that he had an easy way out of life as a mutant and chose to stick with it is an important step for him. Dani's story is another one that sets up decades of future stories. It comes at a great time; she hasn't gotten much new stuff to do recently, and she needed a new direction to keep her character arc fresh. Being a grim reaper is an amazing way to play into her tendency towards survivor's guilt. She only briefly discusses what it really means with one of the other Valkyries at the end, and she can't return to Asgard to learn more, so she'll be spending a lot of time over the next few years discovering her new role and purpose with this job. Sam has a really simple storyline, and it doesn't really change him, but it does give us some insight. The dwarven realm is filled with tunnels and mines, just like his home in Kentucky. Except this time, he has a father figure in Eitri who doesn't die. Sam is the only New Mutant who doesn't even for a second seem to consider staying in Asgard. Obviously he wants to go back to Earth both for the New Mutants and for his family back home, but metaphorically, for him Earth is his life at Xavier's and Nidavellir is Kentucky. Sam loves the dwarves who took him in, and even before they met him he risked his life for them without a second thought. And he'll always love his family in Kentucky first and foremost, but the life he's chosen is as a mutant superhero. Most of Claremont's characters who struggle with doubting their worth consider leaving the X-Men, but Sam is unique in that every time he thinks he's not good enough for the New Mutants, his reaction is to keep trying until he is. He's rarely expressed interest in returning to live in Kentucky. Claremont never specifically calls out these parallels, which I think was a good choice, but it's clear and it's insightful. I really like that this crossover really lets the New Mutants keep center stage even with the X-Men in play, when usually it's the inverse. That being said, a few X-Men get some development. Rachel making her debut as Phoenix was a big deal, as was Scott seeing it, but we don't get thought bubbles for either of them. For now we just get the tragic parallel of stoic Summerses and the planting of seeds for terrible decisions they'll both be making soon. Ororo also got some focus obviously, although not as much panel time as you'd think. Rejecting Loki's offer of all the power she lost and more is a big moment for obvious reasons, and really cements the fact that she's finally accepted herself. Logan being so desperate to save her and almost dying just to talk to her is really interesting; it's the second time they've interacted in over a year of publishing time, but it's clear that their connection is as strong as ever and getting stronger. It's this era of the book that convinces me that they're really the only two people who could be a good partner for the other one, even though I'm not sure I'd want that relationship anyway. There's definitely some feelings here at least. I do think the bait and switch with the death omen over Logan was kinda lame since he eventually just healed it out of his system. I'm also not a fan of the fact that towards the end Loki starts to have hints of feelings for Ororo. It's not necessarily a bad character decision for him, but it's similar to her relationship with Doom from a while ago, so I wish Loki had stayed cold and calculating with Ororo to differentiate. I'm kinda shocked at how well this story fit into the stories of both books. It doesn't feel like a tangent for either book and it progresses both plots really well. If you don't count Marvel Graphic Novels, I think these are my two favorite Claremont annuals ever (New Mutants Special Edition was supposed to be Annual 2 but it had too many pages to qualify as one). Claremont knows the characters so well that he can just toss them in the Asgardian sandbox and follow them around until they finally exit with brand new emotional baggage. It's also kinda a grand finale to all the wacky and fun adventure stories so far. They'll still continue, but the status quo for the books is about to change and turn all the upcoming stories a little darker. This was an awesome high note to cap off an era before Uncanny 200 starts the new one.
