Serenity (2019)
Serenity is goes off the rails so spectacularly it's fascinating to watch. This is not your typical “so bad it’s good” movie. It looks great. The actors are convincing. There are no technical errors to ridicule. The problem is writer/director Steven Knight, who thinks he’s made a movie so smart, so clever and so deep its surprises will have you picking your jaw off the floor. This movie is not smart; it’s preposterous. My advice? First, watch the trailer. It does a fantastic job selling the picture. Knowing nothing else, just go in, and wait. You'll learn that "surprising" does not equal "good".
Baker Dill (Matthew McConaughey) makes a living taking rich tourists fishing for sharks, swordfishes or other aquatic monsters. Lately, he’s become unhinged due to his obsession with “Justice”, an elusive giant tuna. His Captain Ahab-like antics have pushed him to the edge of bankruptcy. Then, his estranged ex-wife comes knocking. Karen (Anne Hathaway) offers Baker $10 million to kill her abusive husband, Frank (Jason Clarke).
While watching, it’ll be obvious something’s not right. Frank, for example. He’s a one-dimensional monster. In every scene, he’s giving his wife poisonous and threatening looks, getting drunk, talking about frequenting underage prostitutes, or otherwise proving himself to be wholly irredeemable. He is not a human being. He’s a cartoon. Similarly, other characters act strangely. Constance (Diane Lane) pays Baker for sex, there’s a strange bespectacled man (Jeremy Strong) who looks totally out of place and is constantly trying to catch up with Baker to give him something. You wonder what kind of place Baker is living in. If the man had any sense, he would jump on the $10 million offer even before learning his son (Rafael Sayegh) is receiving regular beatings from his stepfather. She could’ve given him $1,000 and he would’ve eagerly done it but not in this movie. So what’s actually going on?
In a twist, we learn this whole scenario exists within a video game. No one has any free will - except when they do, more on that in a second. Their actions are pre-programmed. This explains why Baker is obsessed with that fish, why Frank is an enemy you should have no qualms about killing, etc. Everyone is broad on purpose. That doesn’t really matter. Warning someone that the offensive thing you’re going to say is offensive does not make it acceptable. Acknowledging that a joke is unfunny does not make it funny. It gets even dopier when Serenity tosses the idea of free will into the mix. If Baker kills Frank, the teen who programmed the game will kill his real-life father. I guess the logic we’re operating on is that violent video games you make yourself can inspire real-life violence? It makes no sense.
Serenity drops a bombshell of a revelation on you and then lingers on it. All this gives you is enough time to realize just how dopey a story this is. As a cherry on top, it introduces another last-minute twist that’s in no way shocking or surprising, particularly considering everything we just saw means nothing in the end. You'll wonder what everyone involved was thinking. (January 24, 2020)

"Serenity"
SERENITY is awful, but it's also wonderful in its own absurd, nonsensical, coo-coo bananas way. #Serenity #serenitymovie
LOUISA:
LOUISA SAYS:
“Serenity” is a train wreck of a movie that’s not without its own unique charms. It’s wildly ridiculous but the bonkers absurdity is what makes it so riveting. You’ve probably never seen anything quite like this, a movie I can only describe as a mix between “Fatal Attraction,” “Black Mirror,” “The Maltese Falcon,” and “The Matrix.” It’s a bad, yet not inherently…

What did I just see?
Title: “Serenity”
Release date: Jan. 25, 2019
Starring: Matthew McConaughey, Anne Hathaway, Jason Clarke, Diane Lane, Djimon Hounsou, Jeremy Strong, Rafael Sayegh
Directed by: Steven Knight
Run time: 1 hour, 46
Rated: R
What it’s about: A fishing boat captain living on a small island pursues a large tuna and weighs the moral dilemma of a tantalizing offer made by the mother of his teenage son, who he has not seen in many years. But things might not be as they seem.
How I saw it: What to make of “Serenity”? Anyone watching it will have more questions than answers. In fact, it’s likely no one will have a single answer. In fact, no one could say with any certainty that filmmaker Steven Knight answered his own questions, or if he even cared to. In that spirit, here are some questions “Serenity” might leave you with:
· Who was pitched the idea for this movie and thought, “Yeah, let’s do this!”? Kind of an homage to film noir, kind of a murder mystery, kind of a fantasy, kind of philosophical study with religious undertones, and then a giant, nonsensical twist thrown in there and a stab at sentimentality at the end. If that sounds like a dumpster fire, that’s because it is. An intriguing dumpster fire. A baffling dumpster fire. A sometimes-spectacular dumpster fire. But a dumpster fire just the same.
· Who thought this should be released in September, at the onset of awards season? That’s when it was supposed to be thrust upon the world. But then it was pushed back to January, typically the studios’ dumping ground, and released not to fanfare but with negligible promotion. That’s why a movie with box-office draws like Matthew McConaughey and Anne Hathaway and an interesting if deceptive trailer can open with a $4.8 million weekend, good for only eighth place domestically.
· Why did McConaughey and Hathaway sign up for this mess? Even more so, why did Diane Lane want to be even a small part of this? McConaughey plays down-on-his-luck fishing boat captain Baker Dill, who has issues (we assume from him having served in Iraq), including that he is never not drinking. McConaughey plays it straightforward and seriously, and he shows his butt a couple of times, for what that’s worth, Hathaway, as Dill’s ex Karen, is an over-the-top blonde femme fatale and seems to be having fun despite not having much to work with. Ditto Lane, who pays Dill to have sex with her and find her cat but otherwise has little to do with anything. She spends the second half of the movie just watching the proceedings from a window.
· Could Jason Clarke, as Karen’s current husband, have been any more evil? He drinks a lot, abuses Karen physically and emotionally, abuses her (and Dill’s) son, insists on Karen calling him “Daddy,” has connections to the underworld that make it impossible for Karen to leave and, upon arriving on the fictional island of Plymouth, asks to be taken to the area where underage girls will have sex with him for $10. When Karen asks Dill to push her husband out of the fishing boat and leave him for sharks, why wouldn’t Dill do it for free, let alone accept her offer of $10 million cash?
· If McConaughey and Hathaway are big stars and more attractive than most people, why was a scene in which they get it on inside Dill’s boat about as sexy as a glass of room-temperature 2 percent white milk? And what did it have to do with anything?
· Why does a movie made in 2018 and released this year include a stock “magical negro” character? That role falls to Djimon Hounsou as Dill’s assistant. At least there are hints of Hounsou’s motivation for helping Dill; he needs the money. But mostly he’s there to help the white protagonist by dispensing pearls of wisdom and religious insight.
· What about that big plot twist? Did it make everything make sense? Maybe? No? Possibly? Will it make you groan? Groan any more than the rest of the movie? Can you see it coming? Perhaps. Perhaps as early as the opening image. Knight has left subtle and not-so-subtle hints throughout. Pay attention, and clearly something is not quite right in Plymouth. Like, why does the radio announcer always seem to be speaking directly to Dill? But are those so you might correctly guess before the big reveal, which comes just past the halfway mark? Or so that you might enjoy “Serenity” better the second time around, if you feel compelled to watch again? If you know the twist going in, will that diminish your enjoyment? Is that even a concern with a movie this strange and messy?
· And the most important question when the final credits roll: What did I just see? And why?
My score: 18 out of 100
Should you see it? If you are the type of person who can’t look away when driving by a crash scene, maybe check it out when released for streaming and try not to take it seriously.

Moby Dick + Wild Things + The Matrix = WTF
One of the most valuable things in life is honesty; particularly, the honesty of someone calling out your bad ideas. When someone cares about you on a personal or professional level, they’ll do their level best to pull you back from the brink. I cannot emphasize how important that is, but let me explain with my own idiotic example.
I do screenwriting on the side. Years ago, I was batting about script ideas with my writing partners. As we kicked around ideas, I was struck by the Bad Idea Fairy. “Guys, guys, so there were gold reserves in the sub-basements of the Twin Towers. What if, in the aftermath of 9/11, a group of thieves pose as rescue workers to try and get to the gold? Maybe one of them is struck with an ethical conflict and comes into conflict with the rest of his crew!”
Their response proved to me that, even now, they are true friends. “No. You absolutely shouldn’t do that. Not now, not ever. That’s not good.” What was I going to do, have an action-packed gunfight set in the wreckage of the World Trade Center? Thankfully, my friends exorcized the influence of the Bad Idea Fairy, and I endeavored to come up with less stupid concepts in the future.
Some people are more susceptible to the dark and wicked magics of the Bad Idea Fairy than others, and when they bring a vision to life that should not be they are to be pitied, not jeered. Worst of all is when someone genuinely talented is seized with a terrible concept and nobody stops them. Want proof of that? Steven Knight’s Serenity is showing in theaters now, but it won’t be for long.
We’re introduced to the amusingly named Baker Dill (Matthew McConaughey), a charter fishing boat captain dealing with a nasty case of depression. How do we know he’s depressed? He mutters darkly about his experiences as a soldier in Iraq. He smokes constantly, drinks nearly constantly, lives in a shipping container and dives naked into the ocean in lieu of taking a shower like a normal human being. He yells at the sky and threatens people with knives, but everybody gives him a pass because he looks like Matthew McConaughey.
His life isn’t completely terrible, because he’s got a first mate and trusty best friend in Duke (Djimon Hounsou, veering dangerously close to “Magical Black Man” territory). He’s also got Constance (Diane Lane) in his life, a gorgeous older woman who spends her days lounging in bed and paying him for sex. Yes, literally. She also spies on him through the slats of her windows and comments on his actions like a Greek chorus by way of The Graduate.*
I almost forgot to tell you: Baker is obsessed with catching a giant tuna that he’s named “Justice,” and he scrawls information about his attempts to catch it in a battered notebook. He’s also being pursued by Reid Miller (Jeremy Strong) a mysterious man in a black suit who’s a…um…bait salesman. That’s not even the 10th weirdest thing in the movie, and we haven’t even gotten to the A-plot yet!
Back into Baker’s life strolls Karen (Anne Hathaway), a stylish blonde who’s not only his ex but also the mother of their son (Rafael Sayegh). She’s gotten remarried to Frank (Jason Clarke), an abusive creep, and now she has an offer for Baker: all he has to do is take Frank out for a fishing excursion, dump him overboard, and let the sharks do their work. In return, she’ll pay him $10 million for his trouble.
Before we go any further, I need to properly calibrate your expectations. If you look at the movie poster for Serenity, here’s what you’ll see:
Photoshopped images of McConaughey and Hathaway’s floating heads
A cast list
The tagline, “On Plymouth Island, no one ever dies…unless you break the rules.
Based on that information, you can be forgiven thinking that the film is an erotic neo-noir in which you’ll see copious McConaughey ass, Hathaway as a duplicitous femme fatale, and a kinda-dumb main character in over his head. It is that, and so, so much more. And less.
Director Steven Knight is a person of genuine talent. He’s written a number of scripts, including the very good Eastern Promises, and directed the contained thriller Locke.** Here, his film looks glossy and decent with some nice shot compositions, but in short order, things start to feel off. We have a pulpy tone that feels like it’s mocking pulp at the same time. Then…dammit, let’s get this over with, and talk about the script.
Knight also wrote said script, which is…um. Okay, let’s imagine that the genie from Aladdin decided to bring the mountain of cocaine from Scarface to life. As the mountain of cocaine achieves sentience, the genie says, “What do you want to do with your life, Mountain of Cocaine?” It replies, “I have this idea for a screenplay! Let me tell you about it! Am I blowing your mind, man?” It’s not just the dialogue that’s the problem, which sounds like it was written by a computer that hated both people and film noir. It’s not even the character work for Baker, where he’s supposed to be Sexy Damaged Guy, but actually comes off as Check Out My Bipolar Disorder Guy.
The real problem? There’s a series of twists that increasingly feels insane, and during the last half hour the movie doesn’t just go off the rails; it hits a mountain, explodes, and the fiery wreckage strikes a bus full of nuns and orphans, also causing them to explode. It’s like Knight said out loud, to an empty room, “Hold my beer, M. Night Shyamalan,” and proceeded to make cuckoo storytelling choices that you simply must see to believe. He’s pulling the rug out from under you, beating you with the rug, and yelling, “Do you see the rug I’m beating you with?”
I’d love to clown on the cast, but in good conscience, I can’t. They’re doing what is asked of them. If you want someone who excels at playing an entitled rich jerk, you get Jason Clarke.*** Anne Hathaway, who was so damn good in Colossal, is pretty good here, and if you squint and turn your head sideways you can see the iconic femme fatale performance she’s capable of and that could have been.**** Then there’s Matthew McConaughey, who excels at playing deeply strange men. As Mr. Dill he’s fine, I guess? There’s a good bit of scenery gnawing from him, and I never felt like he was phoning it in. The main problem with our cast is that it never feels like they’re in the same movie and their performances never mesh together.
Sooner or later, we’re all visited by the Bad Idea Fairy. Most of us are lucky that our bad ideas don’t involve a $25 million budget and an end result that millions of people can see. Steven Knight is a talented filmmaker, and his cast and crew are talented professionals. I’m hoping that Serenity acts as a reminder of the importance of one lone voice saying, “Dude, no.”
*I have to genuinely give Serenity credit for featuring an older woman with sexual appetites and treating her as a completely normal person. While the film ain’t exactly woke, let’s give credit where credit is due.
**He’s also one of the creators of Who Wants to Be a Millionaire.
***For an excellent Clarke performance, check him out in Chappaquiddick as the loathsome Ted Kennedy.
****As much as Hathaway and McConaughey are wildly attractive people, they have a kind of anti-chemistry here.

"Some weird stuff going on right now. This whole island's a part of it, but nobody knows it." Aviron has debuted a new official trailer for the mysterious thriller Serenity, along with announcing a release delay - from October this year until late January next year. Not to be confused with the sci-fi film, this Serenity is a film from British screenwriter/director Steven Knight (Redemption, Locke) and it's about a mysterious fishing boat captain, played by Matthew McConaughey. Described as a "daringly original, sexy, stylized thriller." The mysterious past of this fishing boat skipper living in the Caribbean comes back to haunt him, ensnaring his life in a new reality that may not be what it all seems. The full cast of Serenity includes Anne Hathaway, Jason Clarke, Djimon Hounsou, Jeremy Strong, Diane Lane, Kenneth Fok, Robert Hobbs, and Rafael Sayegh. This trailer really over-sells and over-shares the story this time, but perhaps they're hoping to gain more instant attraction this way. I'm still curious to find out what exactly is going on.
Here's the second official trailer (+ poster) for Steven Knight's Serenity, direct from Aviron's YouTube:
You can still watch the first teaser trailer for Knight's Serenity from summer, here, for the original intro.
Baker Dill (Matthew McConaughey) is a fishing boat captain leading tours off a tranquil, tropical enclave called Plymouth Island. His quiet life is shattered, however, when his ex-wife Karen (Anne Hathaway) tracks him down with a desperate plea for help. She begs Dill to save her – and their young son – from her new, violent husband (Jason Clarke) by taking him out to sea on a fishing excursion, only to throw him to the sharks and leave him for dead. Karen’s appearance thrusts Dill back into a life he’d tried to forget, and as he struggles between right and wrong, his world is plunged into a new reality that may not be all that it seems. Serenity is both written and directed by acclaimed British filmmaker Steven Knight, director of the films Redemption and Locke previously, and an Oscar-nominated screenwriter for many other feature films including Dirty Pretty Things, Seventh Son, Pawn Sacrifice, Allied. Aviron Pictures will finally be releasing Knight's Serenity in theaters everywhere starting January 25th, 2019 next year. Looking good? Who's in?
