"No, no, no go ahead and sign it. If you're feeling good about the deal, what's stopping you? Don't second guess yourself now, that house is perfect..." Raf trailed off, eyes lifting to meet those that had settled onto him as he finished up the unexpected phone call from one of his clients. Things were right on the precipice of going extremely well. "I love to hear that, Cindy, hey - you know I'm confident this is right for you, and I wouldn't lie to you, would I? Alright, perfect. Just send a pic over to me once you signed it. I'll talk to you soon."
Hanging up the phone, he flashed an apologetic smile in their direction. "Sorry, about that, when duty calls it's impossible not to answer." Not when millions of dollars could be on the line. "Hope I didn't disturb you too much but if I did, next coffee is on me." Raf offered, the charm radiating off of him, the offer to open up a conversation if they wanted it.

Tala was a needy bitch... but she would be the first to admit it. She longed to be the center of attention, adored, which usually worked out excellent for her in her relationship with Rafael. Even after all this time there was no lack of passion on her end and if there was on his, well, she hadn't noticed it and refused to think it. But lately he'd been so busy — or maybe she'd just been extra needy. "My love," she called, approaching her fiancé in her most tempting attire (or so she hoped), arms wrapping around his neck from behind, "aren't you getting tired? The bed feels awfully cold... and lonely... and sad... without you in it..."

There was so much that could be read in someone's eyes, they could say whatever they wanted to, but the eyes never lied. "Yes, you do." He nodded slowly, eyes locked on hers still as though he could read every single lie and secret that she possessed with one look. He couldn't exactly but he had studied enough eyes right before they'd lost all life in them to know when someone was lying to him, when they were trying to say just what he wanted to hear like that would save their lives. Pathetic, every single one of them. Still holding her chin, the one she hadn't tried to pull away or fight his touch in the least, Rafael leaned in close, breath hot against her ear as he whispered, "don't blame her for doing everything you never had the fucking nerve to do." His lips lingered for just a moment before he completely pulled away, stepping back as he finally learned how to keep his hands to himself. "Goodnight, Elodie. Get home safe, you never know who's creeping around here in the dark." Without another word, Raf turned to leave her there, setting off in the direction he'd been walking before she'd started yelling at him.
elodie stood where her feet had planted themselves, watching his movements like prey being circled by a hungry vulture. her mind spun, inner conflict clouding her judgement as she refused to bolt towards her car and kick up dirt behind her as she did so. it was intoxicating, tasting from the fountain kayla had drank from her entire life, letting the experiences linger on her tongue. whilst the younger was pulling her bow across taught violin strings in the shadow, kayla was playing the world like it were an instrument of her very own. that's why kayla was missing and elodie was here with her spine meeting brick as her pulse soared. rafael's words — accusations — sent vibrations skittering along her nerves, making her fingers buzz, vape clattering to the ground as nails embedded themselves into the marred flesh of her palms. ❛ i'm sure you'd like it if i did, ❜ elodie cooed, head rolling back to rest against the wall, pupils blown out from both the exhilaration of her own internal agenda being satisfied and the way his scent clung to the air around her. yet, as he kept talking, she felt her pride shrinking, shriveling up inside of her hollow chest, sharply inhaling through her nostrils as his hand demandingly took ownership of her chin. yet, despite the momentary drop in her confidence, her eyes never left his, the sheen that glazed them both defiant and obedient. raf was right; the moment she had found out he had been in a pawn in kayla's game, he became yet another thing on her checklist to claim as her own. ❛ i don't know what kayla saw in you, ❜ she lied, not answering his question, knowing if she had been truthful it'd be precisely what he wanted to hear. ❛ — and it's a small town. i can't help my sister managed to touch everyone who ever stepped past the border.❜

To be honest, Rafael hadn't noticed the missing posters, maybe a couple of times in passing but he hadn't given them much thought. Why would he? They weren't missing because of him and those were the only posters he would have cared to look at. But thankfully none of those had appeared in the years he'd been traveling around the country. And if they had, he was long gone by that point. "How long have they been gone?" His father must have mentioned something to him about it when it happened but it was hard for Rafael to hold onto any information that didn't directly affect him in some way. His eyes roamed over the abandoned building and it all fit together now that she had given him some insight. And he couldn't say that she was wrong. If they hadn't been seen yet, no leads and no active searching going on, the odds of them being found were slim to none. Maybe he should care a little more about this because it meant there was someone behind it. Or something. Sighing, he dragged his eyes fro the sight in front of them to focus on her, not believing for a second the whole dumb damsel personality. Eliza might not have been the smartest person he knew, no one was, but she knew plenty. "There's this incredible thing you can use if you don't know something, it's called Google. I think it would help you a lot."
— SEA-GREEN EYES ROLLED with the perfect level of overly-annoyed drama. " are we really that below you ? heartbreaking. " , eliza hummed, not sounding heartbroken in the least. withering sarcasm was burned into the words, blistering her tone as she continued : " i hate to be the one that breaks the news, but we're standing upon the landmark of an utter tragedy. some handful of employees disappeared from here without a trace. you've at least seen their missing posters around town, right ? i mean, i've only been back a month and can't seem to escape them. not that there's any reason for them to still be hanging up . . . like, they're so obviously dead. "
though she'd never considered rafael a friend, despite his presence throughout the near-entirety of her youth, she liked to think she knew him well. against her will, she knew : who he'd been friends with, what he took in his coffee, his favorite tie. then again, that was all over six years ago. now, he could surprise her . . . and that unpredictably made him interesting. and irritating. " what's a euphemism ? " eliza watched him through her lashes, expression black. she was good at playing dumb since she so often was.

There had been something in the air all night, a feeling that Raf understood well, like the calm before a storm as the air grew heavier. When the carnage started, he couldn't say he was surprised although the effigy of his father made him realize maybe there had been a reason after all to keep him away from the bonfire. Not just because no one liked having him around. He couldn't seem to move himself away from the edge of the woods, dark eyes glued to the smoldering bodies. All he could think was at least he was cleaner when he killed someone. "We should leave, don't you think? Someone must have called the sheriff already."

An Unexpected Valentine
Book: Open Heart (Book 2)
Pairing: Rafael Aveiro x F!MC (Carrie Valentine)
Featuring: Bryce Lahela, "Vovo" Aveiro
Rating: Teen
Category: Fluff
Summary: It's Raf and Carrie's first Valentine's Day together, and he has planned a perfect day for them, but nothing ever goes according to plan. But by the end of the day, Raf is sure of one thing, it's the perfect Valentine's Day, and he has the only Valentine he'll ever need.
Words: 2067
A/N: This one is going out to @twinkleallnight, who requested a fic for her favorite, Rafael. I hope I did it justice for you. And a special thank you to the lovely @missameliep for helping me with the Brazillian cultural references. You are a gem, and we're all lucky to have you in the fandom! Participating in @choices-february2023 Day 14 Valentine's Day
It was Valentine’s Day morning at Edenbrook Hospital, and every nook and cranny seemed to be adorned in pink and red. Balloons, streamers, flowers, cupcakes … even the staff’s attire seemed to be prescribed by Cupid himself. The HR Department had a long-standing joke that making it impossible to forget the day was an employee benefit, leading to happy partners throughout Boston. Just one more service they offered to the community!
But one employee needed no reminder. Rafael Aveiro had been meticulously planning this day from the moment he told Carrie Valentine those three little words, and then she said them back. He was a romantic at heart, so he would have made a fuss over Valentine’s Day even if it wasn’t named after his girlfriend. Carrie always laughed and explained that wasn’t how the holiday got its name, but Raf refused to accept it. A celebration of love for all? Of course. But for him, the day was dedicated to his Carrie; now, it was his favorite holiday of all.
He had worked the overnight shift and was getting ready to leave Edenbrook, knowing Carrie would arrive shortly after he left. While he couldn’t be there to greet her, a bouquet of red roses and a box filled with chocolate-covered strawberries would. Later, he arranged for lunch to be delivered from her favorite bistro in Back Bay. Then tonight, he would pick her up at seven, and the real celebration would begin.
His excitement morphed into an ever-present smile on his face. Nothing was bringing him down today. The hospital’s gift shop was opening as he passed by, and he couldn’t resist slipping to buy one more thing. A small, pink teddy bear for Carrie was under one arm, and a bouquet of flowers for Vovo was under the other when he heard a familiar voice beckoning from behind.
“Awww, Raf… you shouldn’t have! I told you, darling. You’re all the gift I need!”
Raf could feel the megawatt smile before he saw it.
“Then you’ll be delighted to know they’re not for you, Bryce.”
Bryce gasped and grabbed his chest in mock horror. “Now my day is ruined! But,” he continued, admiring the gifts in Raf’s hands, “at least you’re taking care of Carrie, so you’re off the hook.”
“Well, one is for Carrie, and the other is for my Vovo.”
“Ah, so you’ll have two happy ladies today! What are your plans tonight? Anything big?”
“I’m taking Carrie to Oliveira’s Steakhouse for dinner, Café Brazil for dessert, and then dancing at this little club I found on Tremont.”
“Nice! Is it a surprise?”
“Mmmm, I have surprises planned for her during the night, but she knows what we’re doing. You know Carrie, she doesn’t like big surprises.”
“Well, it sounds like a great. I suppose me third wheeling is out of the question.”
“Any other night, I’d be happy to have you join us, but tonight, it’s our first Valentine’s Day, and this is all about Carrie and me… so….”
“I was only teasing,” Bryce grinned, “but now you have to take me next week!”
Raf laughed heartily as he walked away. “That’s a deal!”
~~~~~
The door of Raf’s car was already open when his phone rang, and the grin on his face left no doubt as to who was calling.
“Happy Valentine’s day, meu amor!”
“Raf!” Carrie gushed. “I can’t believe you did all this!”
“I didn’t do enough. You like?”
“I love! Everything is beautiful, and right now, I’m the envy of everyone on the 9th floor!”
“I’m the only one they should be jealous of… because I have you.”
“Raf… I adore you! This Valentine’s Day is already better than all twenty-six I had before combined, and I haven’t even seen you yet!”
“We’ll fix that tonight.”
“I can’t wait! I’m dying for you to see the dress I bought!”
“Not as much as I’m dying to see it,” he assured as Carrie giggled.
“We’re staying at your place after our date, right? Will your roommate be home?”
“No. He will be with his girlfriend in Somerville, so it’s just you and me.”
“Good,” Carrie purred. “Then I can’t wait until you see what's under my dress, too.”
“Carrie, I’m about to go into my Vovo’s house… could we, uh, maybe save this conversation for later.”
“Sure! I don’t want Vovo seeing you in… that… condition!” She laughed, “But as much as I’m looking forward to the after-party, I can’t wait for our date!”
“You do love Oliveira’s….”
“I do!” she enthused. “But I love everything you planned, and I just want to be all around Boston with you on my arm. Nothing means more to me. I can’t wait for seven o’clock!”
“Neither can I, meu amor.”
Raf jumped out of the car as soon as he hung up. As much as he wanted to get to his apartment and sleep, he had one more stop to make. He barely stepped onto Vovo’s driveway when he heard Roberto Carlos's tunes blasting… even with the doors and windows closed. Once inside, he had to chuckle, seeing his grandmother singing Chegaste, the perfect duet.
“Vovo,” Raf smiled, “Jennifer Lopez is nothing compared to you!” Pulling the flowers out from behind his back, he wrapped his grandmother in a tight hug. “Feliz Dia dos Namorados, Vovo.”
“Ai meu anjo!” She cried. “You are so good to me!”
“I learned that from you because you’re so good to me.”
“And this year…you’re so happy, meu filho. No?”
The grin on his face answered for him, but he still replied. “I really am.”
“Good! Then you should eat! Come to the kitchen! I’ll feed you.”
“You would have fed me if I said I wasn’t happy, too,” he smiled.
“Of course!” Vovo insisted. “I would have fed you more!”
Exhausted, Raf hadn’t noticed the pleasant aroma that filled the home, but once in the kitchen, it was unmistakable.
“Vovo, what are you making? It smells delicious!”
“That’s because it is delicious, Rafa! When have I made you anything you didn’t enjoy?”
“Never!” He lifted the lid off a pot, and his mouth watered. “Is this?”
“Feijoada. But I’m also making steak, arroz e feijoa….”
“Are you having a party I didn’t know of?”
“It is a party. It’s not every day I get to meet the woman my grandson loves!”
Raf coughed on his coffee, and Vovo patted his back to assist him.
“Rafa, esta bem?”
“Yes, it just… went down the wrong way.”
“That’s because you’re tired, me anjo. Go home and get some rest. I’ll make sure everything is perfect for tonight!”
“Vovo… uh… when did I say we were coming here tonight?”
“When you said you were taking Carrie out for the best Brazillian food in Boston! I’m so touched that you want to introduce us on Valentine’s Day. Estou tao animado!”
“Yes… well, it is very exciting, Vovo….” he trailed.
“What time will you be here for dinner?”
“Well… Vovo… actually….” he stammered, looking around the kitchen overflowing with more food than three people could possibly eat, he didn’t have the heart to tell her no. “Uhm, Carrie is working today, so let me check the time with her, and I’ll let you know.”
“Maravilhoso! I am looking forward to it!”
~~~~~
Raf’s mind raced the whole ride home; his heart completely torn. He went to call Bryce for advice, but he remembered he was in surgery all day. All the plans he had meticulously made were unraveling before his eyes. With Carrie so excited, the thought of disappointing her made his stomach churn. He couldn’t let that happen. But Vovo was so happy and working so hard. How could he hurt her? He let out a frustrated sigh as he entered his apartment, plopping down on the couch as soon as he walked in. He was determined to figure something out, but the overnight shift caught up to him, and the only thing that came to him was sleep. Hours later, he woke with a startle when a phone call woke him.
“Oh, shit!” He looked at his watch and panicked. He had less than one hour to get Carrie. Flying into the shower to begin getting ready, he didn’t even recall his dilemma. But on the drive to pick up Carrie, it all came back to him.
This would explain why he found himself standing on the steps to her apartment, sweating, despite the cold temperature. Anxious, even though he had been looking forward to this night for months. And full of dread… because there was no good way to work this out. But when Carrie opened the door, his mind settled for a moment.
He loved Carrie for her heart, but right now, he was reminded that the outside was every bit as beautiful as the inside. Her chestnut brown hair flowed over her delicate shoulders, and her red lips were the same hue as her dress. But it was her eyes that won him over, those big brown eyes that had held him captive from the moment they met. If Rafael Aveiro had any problems at that moment, they were all washed away.
“Wow…” he gasped as he took her hand. “You look…. You look….”
Carrie gently spun around, allowing the red silk skirt to swirl all around her before falling into his arms.
“Please tell me that loss of words is because you’re overwhelmed with joy, not that you hope I’ll be heading back inside to change,” she giggled.
“I wouldn’t allow it!” He grinned, “You are perfection and… wow… you’re my date!”
“All night long,” she beamed…. and with her words, his dilemma came rushing back. There was no hiding it; the worry was etched on his face.
“Raf?” Carrie asked, a worry line forming between her brows. “Did I say something wrong?”
He startled at the concerned expression on her face; he didn’t take months to plan this night for her to look that way.
“No! My love, not at all,” he pulled her into his arms for a warm embrace, “it’s just….”
Carrie pulled back just a bit and stared into his eyes. “Just?”
“I’m afraid I have to start our date by doing something that will break my Vovo’s heart.”
“What?” Carrie asked. “I don’t understand. Does she not want you to be with me?”
“Quite the contrary….”
Raf conveyed the story. Explaining how the confusion began and that he had only learned of the misunderstanding earlier that day. He described Vovo’s kitchen, overflowing with food, and how excited she had been. But, she’d understand, he assured. He’d explain, even at this later hour, that it was a misunderstanding… even though it broke his heart.
When he finished speaking, he found Carrie standing before him, her arms firmly crossed in front of her chest.
“Rafael,” she said sternly. “There is only one way to rectify this situation, and it is not canceling with Vovo; it’s canceling our reservation at Oliveira’s.”
“It… what? But you’ve been looking forward to our date?”
“Of course I do!” she insisted. “But I want the best Brazillian food in Boston, and by your own word, the only place to get that is in your Vovo’s dining room.”
“You mean, you want to go to Vovo’s? For our Valentine's Day date?”
“Raf, I’d be honored… as long as it’s all right with you. I know being introduced to your family is a big deal in your culture, and if you’re not ready to take that step with me, I understand. But otherwise….”
Carrie’s words were stopped, replaced by a little squeal as Raf spun her around in his arms.
“Are you kidding me? I don’t know what I was thinking; this is the perfect Valentine’s Day, after all. You are the love of my life, and it would be my honor to introduce you to my grandmother… on this… the holiday devoted to you.”
“Would you stop?” She laughed, reaching into his pants pocket to pull out his phone. “Then you better call the restaurant… you have a reservation to cancel. And make it quick!”
“Why?”
“Because we have to stop at the bakery. I’m not showing up at your grandmother’s house empty-handed.”
She didn’t get to say another word as Raf’s lips captured hers.
“Happy Valentine's Day, meu amor. The first of many more to come.”

"Not sure yet." Raf admitted, honest for once. His father would find out at some point, most likely from no effort of his own, but the truth would only be hidden for so long. There was a part of him that reveled in the idea of everyone else knowing first before his father just to see what would happen. "I do appreciate you at least telling me. Based on the picture, it wouldn't have been hard to assume." Not that he would have. It wasn't that it wasn't obvious, he just didn't care, nor would he think something like an unwanted pregnancy would happen to him, or if it did, would affect his life in anyway. And if Poppy hadn't come back here...it wouldn't have. It - she, Tillie. "You're more than welcome to tell him if you want." Raf offered with a shrug, lifting his drink she'd brought over and taking a gulp of it. "It's clear to me you've done whatever you wanted with her so please don't stop now on my behalf. I'll follow your lead."
She’s like a live wire, nerves fraying and electric. The heady thrum of the club’s music echoes in the hollow space between her ribs. Tillie – she’s here for Tillie, for the truth, to protect her daughter. Poppy shuts her eyes and lightly shakes her head, as if clearing her mind, before she’s back and focused. “I know,” she sinks a bit, losing a touch of that defiant edge, “I’m sorry, it’s not like, personal. I would do anything for that little girl, she’s my whole world, and I had no idea how you would react. But I thought you deserved to know the truth.” His smirk still drives her mad, but no longer in the way it once did, when she was young and he was one of her few escapes. Now she almost wants to throw her drink in his face, instead she takes a sip. “I call her Tillie, she’s so clever and kind and –“ he mentions his father and Poppy stops short. “Ah, right. Will you tell him?”

For the first five years of Franca Delfina Oliveira's life, she grew up in Salvadar, Bahia, Brazil with her parents, Rafael and Bruna Oliveira, and her older sister, Beatriz. Both of her parents were massive animal and nature lovers and held careers in helping the planet. The couple had always wanted to start up their own conservation organization after working with a wide variety of them in their home of Salvador. And so, after moving to the States when their daughters were young, they began to work towards making their life-long dream come true.

The Bahia Wildlife Sanctuary has been opened since 2004, and Franca's whole world had been the sanctuary and the Oliveira family farm. Growing up and knowing what she wanted to do, she eventually earned her Wildlife Conservation degree through Unity Environmental University distant learning, spending those years traveling around the globe and volunteering for a wide variety of organizations, especially those for wildlife and conservation efforts. After earning her degree, she moved to Denver full-time and spent twenty-four months getting her vet tech degree from Bel Rea Vet Tech school. She got a job as a vet tech at the Denver Aquarium, working there for a year until, at the age of twenty-four, her mother died from a heart attack. Resulting in her returning back to Blue Harbor and spending the past two years working as a vet tech at the sanctuary and even getting a second, part-time job at Earthwave for an extra income. In fall of 2024, she officially started part-time schooling at Blue Harbor University so that she could earn her masters in Zoology.

🦜While Franca had been living in Denver, the aquarium saved a truck full of animals from a poaching ring. One of those animals ended up being a Scarlet macaw. The bird had lost half of its left wing from the time it'd been taken from Costa Rica to Denver, and Franca had been in charge of taking care of her. The two became bonded and now, Iria the Macaw is under Franca's care. The two are rarely apart from each other.
🦜She had a reputation throughout her schoolyears as being the "Animal Lover Girl", always ready to talk about anyone and everyone about animals and better ways to help the planet. She even started up an Earth Club in high school. Not many people joined it, however.
🦜While her family has always been comfortable money-wise, they're not rich. All of their money has been put into the sanctuary and farm, ensuring that the animals and plants had the best care possible. They live in a fairly reasonable sized log cabin that they worked on themselves, and through the help of friends and extended family members whenever they visited from Brazil.
🦜With that being said, the Oliveiras made sure to visit their home country at least three times a year: Carnaval season, the middle of summer, and around Christmas. Staying connected to their family and culture is highly important to them, though they've been struggling to do so since Franca's mother passed.
🦜The farm is home to four horses, ten cows, a herd of sheep, three goats, five chickens and a rooster, two cats, two dogs, and a pond full of freshwater fish and frogs. They live next to the river and are about a ten minute walk, three minute drive, from the sanctuary.
🦜Along with Iria, Franca is the happy animal mama of Dulce the iguana, Bruna the guinea pig, and Philip the grandpa dark calico cat. And yes, she understands how rare Philip is. But no, she refuses to sell him. She either rescued or adopted all of her babies and loves them all greatly.
🦜Franca is primarily a vegan, but will sometimes adjust to a pescatarian diet every now and then.
🦜She is a certified adventure guide, having earned her certificate through Pure Explorations after partaking in their Nepal Adventure Guide Program.
🦜Summer after she graduated from high school and before she went off to Nepal (as mentioned above), she'd been able to go to Alaska for awhile to participate in Girls On Ice (now known as Inspiring Girls Expeditions): a mountaineering expedition with an alpine ecosystems focus.
🦜As mentioned in her bio, she participated in both SEAmester and Semester at Sea. She spent her fall semester with the first study abroad program, sailing from the Mediterranean, across the Atlantic, before making her way to the Caribbean. For Semester at Sea, she journeyed to Asia (Thailand, Vietnam, Malaysia, India), Africa (Kenya, South Africa, Ghana, Morocco), and Europe (Spain and Germany). I have a wc in mind for an ex-lover that she had been on both voyages with that became her biggest "what if", if anyone's interested!
🦜The best way to describe Franca's style is "hippie, granola girl with Brazilian and global touches". She loves brands like Wondery, Inkkas, FARM Rio, Sandcloud, Fahlo bracelets, Live Your Legend bracelets, Pura Vida bracelets, and others that's all about the great outdoors that has conservation efforts and that are connected to her culture and other cultures that she's able to appreciate. This will be further touched on in other posts.

Rafael's eyes narrowed, brow furrowed at all the horror tropes that came in his direction - or he assumed they were - weren't all those campy horror movies about cults and cabins in the woods? He shook his head with a laugh, glancing down at the drink he rest his fingers on. "I don't think so, but who knows, I was gone for a while before he became the mayor, maybe he was into all that shit." But Raf highly doubted that. Miguel had never been the type to be a cult member, unless he was the leader of it because being a follower was never something this family was good at. "So you'd be a part of the incestuous family then? I feel like most people would hide that fact for a little longer." He teased before the confusion returned. "I don't know what any of that shit means, Jude, English please. Why does it. matter?"
"Has your dad ever accidentally joined cults worshipping nature? Went to a cabin for a weekend get away and read from a book of death?" Jude employed his best self to deliver these lines, hoping his emphatic mention of the Evil Dead franchise offered them both some reprieve --- and to disguise the theories he had begun to harbour about the man in question. Though Jude readily cast aspersions across whomever held the title of mayor to amuse his own sensibilities, no true trace of suspicion had colored his thoughts; but now, even God's errand boy Hernandez had been labeled a conspirator. "I wish this was Game of Thrones - I'd look amazing with long blonde hair. But I've never heard of Cervus being worshipped, only getting a brief mention in obscure books. It means whatever this thing, this group is, they're old Raf; older than Lavey's Satanic bible. Maybe even older than the Lesser Key of Solomon. "
