Wednesday, June 21, 2017 - Rest Day in Sault Ste. Marie

This morning, I got up and did some birding around our campsite and also at Bellevue Park in Sault Ste Marie.  Then in the afternoon, we went across to the other Sault Ste Marie (Michigan) for the Soo Locks Boat Tour.  The tour guide provided a very interesting narration on the other vessels we encountered, the buildings along the shores and the history and operation of the locks.  The tour included an upstream lift in the American locks and a downstream drop in the Canadian locks.  I’d highly recommend this tour to anyone interested in ships and shipping.

The saga of our fridge continues.  When we originally had the electrical failure in Calgary, the repair technician discovered that the AC heating element in our fridge had also failed.  He then discovered that the replacement part is a special order piece and he couldn’t get it on time.  I began phoning ahead to RV Repair shops to see if I could coordinate the delivery of the special order with our arrival in town.  Regina had the wrong part delivered.  Winnipeg realized they wouldn’t get it on time.  Finally, I settled on Sault Ste Marie.  They got the right part and put it in for Lorine on her way in to our campsite.  They tested it and everything was working fine.  Last night, the fridge gave us an error message.  Today, we took it back in to the RV dealer and they discovered that the control panel is also fried.  It is an automatic switch that first looks for AC, then Propane.  Since there hasn’t been any AC for the last several weeks, we didn’t know the switch was fried.  Now that the AC is fixed, we find out the control panel is shot.  They couldn’t get the part in until Friday, so we’ll be trying Ottawa.  It’s a good way to get to know RV service shops across the country, but I don’t recommend it.

Warning Signs

The brake dashboard light glows amber or red, brake pedal feels spongy, brake pedal presses closer to the floor than usual squeaky, grinding noise is heard, and/or the vehicle pulls to one side when the brakes are applied.

Brake Parts

Your braking system is a complex assembly of mechanical, electronic and hydraulic components which uses friction to slow and stop a moving vehicle. When the brake pedal is applied, the pressure on the brake pedal moves a piston in the master cylinder, forcing the brake fluid from the master cylinder through the brake lines and flexible hoses to the calipers and wheel cylinders. The force applied to the brake pedal produces a proportional force on each of the pistons.

The calipers and wheel cylinders contain pistons, which are connected to a disc brake pad or brake shoe. Each output piston pushes the attached friction material against the surface of the rotor or wall of the brake drum, thus slowing down the rotation of the wheel. When pressure on the pedal is released, the pads and shoes return to their released positions. This action forces the brake fluid back through the flexible hose and tubing to the master cylinder.

Disc Brakes

Disc Brakes are comprised of a disc (rotor), a caliper assembly, and pads. The caliper is connected to the master cylinder through tubes, hoses and valves that conduct brake fluid through the system.

Drum Brakes

Drum Brakes are comprised of a drum and backing plate, a hub or axle assembly, brake shoes, and wheel cylinder. The wheel cylinder is connected to the master cylinder through tubes, hoses and valves that dispenses brake fluid through the system.

Brake Fluid

Brake fluid is a hydraulic fluid used to transfer force under pressure from where it is created through hydraulic lines to the braking mechanism near the wheels. Braking produces extreme heat so brake fluid must have a high boiling point to remain effective and must not freeze under operating conditions.
