‘Just lie still. You’re in no condition to be up and about just yet.’

            Mikkah couldn’t recall the last time that she’d passed out from exhaustion, from overwork, from overuse of her abilities - things as simple as being on her feet too long, going without sleep or food or drink, those were things that she’d learned long ago to ignore, to adapt to.  How long had she been awake?  How long had she been working, helping dig through the rubble and debris, absorbing and shedding the worst of the injuries among the survivors, with little care to who saw.  The town had been left in shambles by the earthquake, dozens had been killed in the collapses of buildings, fragile, flimsy things, packed against each other like sardines, but that had only made things worse.   It had only been chance that she was even here - she had meant to move on the week before.   “No, I --”  Her voice was rough, her throat dry, and she could feel the residual burn and throbs of injuries come and not quite gone throughout her entire body.   “I’ll be fine, just -- help me up.”
