Yeah i mean "arrogance is fucking stupid, pride only leads to shame" has been a prominent theme of dragon ball in general until like- Super, but otherwise it started really early on along with the martial arts stuff and Goku had to be involved ofc! Roshi entered and won the first tournament exclusively to teach Goku and Krillin humility which yknow they EVENTUALLY learn fr and it becomes one of Goku's key features!
So like nowadays Goku has this whole thing where yknow even if he enjoys fights and he has a lot of fun when its not the earth or lives on the line (sometimes even when it is) he takes them seriously and respects his opponents and expects to be respected the same and trusts they will play fair (which is one of his flaws! Goku is not overconfident abt himself but instead too trusting of his opponents!) and he learns that thru indulging in a bit of asshole-ery as a kid/preteen that he's picked up from all the people he's fought and/or allied himself with
and by the time he turns into a proper teenager he's already grown into a much closer version to the current Goku who yknow has self reflected on his time away about all the asshole-ery and all the ultimately useful shit for life that Roshi somehow taught him and has put the whole "Haha i'm so strong im the best no one can beat me" thing behind (he does still get a little silly with it tho).
And that's like the "dragon ball thing ever" like, proven by:
Vegeta's loser status before the motherfucker even dared to hug his son because he was a bitch
Future Trunks' stupid grade 3 saiyan being absolute shit because it was all strength and he didn't focus on other also important things and got too carried away and thought he could fucking kill Cell himself (he couldn't)
TALKING ABT CELL: VEGETA AGAIN BEING A BITCH LETTING CELL TRANSFORM (i love vegeta but he is, yknow, a bitch)
Gohan in the Cell saga getting too cocky in Ssj2 and almost getting everybody killed (and Goku DID die)
so like that is a dragon ball thing that happens all the time and carries over to Z, Toriyama kept Vegeta alive cuz he "was useful" to keep the whole "pride is fucking stupid" train going.
And like proof of this very important lesson Goku learned is when Goku lowkey did THAT (getting wordy angyCRUSH FRIEZA'S HAND) on Namek when Krillin got killed and his reaction was to tell Gohan to run when he transformed into a super saiyan because he didn't feel like (virtuous, honorable, somewhat rational in the whole not killing people department) himself and was afraid he couldn't control the form.
"Do as i tell you right now! before i lose whatever little sense of reason i have left" He knows he's going off the fucking rails like many villains would when on the verge of defeat, frieza being one of 'em. (btw i think thats the line he tells gohan in the kai dub in english idk i watched it in spanish)
Point is the guy now knows that getting angry like he just did and start shit-talking your opponents isn't like, a good thing (but like hes not very much in control so he still does it yknow how da supah saiyan is), and he tries to restrain himself at least a little when he totally bodies Frieza (he "makes him pay" but doesn't kill him), for many reasons, some of those being that wasting time flaunting was not a good idea (and lowkey the first beats of the fight proved that by the fact that frieza fires that stupid fucking PLANET EXPLODE NOW ball and now they are on a true time limit)}
And even when Super completely assassinates Goku in certain ways he still says stuff like "No i don't wanna be a god of destruction that's fucking boring!! the Tournament Of Power showed me strong people AND I'M REALLY EXCITED AND I WANNA TRAIN AND GET STRONGER!!!" in the Broly movie! very much in character! as Goku has also rejected the Kami position before :) (edit: the point is showing goku has that mentality of "i'm not the strongest and i kinda dont wanna be cuz that would be pretty boring but i fucking love martial arts and you can always get better so im still training!" and is not like frieza levels of "I AM THE STRONGEST I DONT NEED TO FUCKING TRAIN" or like old vegeta, which was most likely kept alive to make this comparison even if toriyama hated his pussy)
Sorry for the dragon ball values info dump but this was one of the things i learned from the show as a kid and stuck with me all the way to wherever the fuck i am now
I’m watching a subbed dragon ball and I DO NOT KNOW how to word this eloquently / I have no screenshots of proof so I’m just wondering if anyone else has seen dragon ball and has noticed this?
In the Piccolo Daimao arch Goku straight-up has some shit to say. Before he was all young and childish and goofy, and when it came to words he STRAIGHTFORWARD in a fight - when serious, he would state outright that he doesn’t have the patience for his opponents boasts + hedges + insults + general repartee.
But at the turn of the arch it seemed like the shock and grief of Kuririn’s death affected Goku immediately, and he suddenly had words to say. He began acting more like what we see in the BAD GUYS - the attitude that denotes their weakness and is assurance of their later defeat.
Of course the memories are fuzzy by now but off of the top of my head: He called Yajirobe a bastard, to which Yajirobe responded with his debut of “Hey, that’s my line!” He also was rash to assume that Yajirobe was his enemy, but that’s because well, he just got his shit thrashed by Cymbal, and he’s not thinking straight through the grief and pain and all.
I just kept seeing little things like that throughout the arch - like the grief had loosened his tongue, or matured him, or he’s just ageing naturally - Goku engages in repartee now all of a sudden. I feel dumb because I have no solid memories now but just believe me. When he was fighting Piccolo he said some shit that had me clutch my pearls to see coming from him. Altogether, Goku is exhibiting a newfound WIT WITH and FAVOR FOR words, and a confidence that when laced with his anger and impatience almost comes across as arrogance.
My most recent (and therefore, extant) example is when Goku is facing Mr Popo. Just in the little I’ve seen thus far, he’s sort of acting like a classic dragon ball villain E.G. loser. When Mr Popo is able to land the first hit on him, Goku actually blames it on dumb luck, and assures himself that it won’t happen again. Yknow, like all the villains do when Goku is able to land a hit on them.
And then he actually starts to insult his opponent. Yknow, the type of behavior that Goku used to not have patience for, and used to be too virtuous/mature/honorable for, and he would at times ask his opponent to cease with the hot talk and to get on with the fight.
Goku is straight up sloppy, arrogant, and IMPATIENT in this fight thus far, and the shit he lets himself think is too close to the shit that always ends up costing some villain a victory.
I know this wasn’t eloquent, and I know that I failed to offer sufficient proof, but I’m wondering if anyone else noticed this as well and has some thoughts on it. It feels like a lot of things.
Goku is still caught up in the grief and pain of the ARDUOUS ORDEALS he just went through. It’s more to ask of anyone ever, and now he’s gotta do one more fucking thing. And we can understand his impatience, then. Furthermore, it does just feel like he’s gotten older. Maybe his brain is hardening, and all of his victories are catching up to his ego. He’s not his usual self of awe and admiration for a strong opponent - he’s seen life and death too INTIMATELY these past days and he’s TENSE. In all of this he’s found his words and is playing along with the warrior’s repartee that he’s been exposed to by battle after battle.
Did anyone else notice anything similar and take start by it?

~spoilers for ATLA, LOK and ALL COMICS~
A critique of
Tumblr media
(Significant Spoilers / final panel spoilers)
Tl:dr at the end
Disclosure
Hi, this is going to be a critique specifically about how June and irohs interaction in bato of the watertribe (BotWT) was delt with in the bounty hunter and the tea maker (BHatTB).
Tumblr media
I recognize this is only 1 page in a 78 page long comic but I think it's worthy critiquing how this was handled. I've watched both shows, read all the ATLA comics, along with the one shot ALTA comics, I'm not meatriding for Iroh in this as you'll see, neither will I do the like for the writers of the show or the comics, I also won't demonize either, I'll just be stating what i disagree with and what direction I think would serve the world/characters better.
1. The Comic in Question
This comic is an okay comic, like the other one shots it's self-contained, if you don't read these, it's fine as they won't come up in any other works from avatar studios (apart from maybe Azula: and the spirit temple). Due to this microcosm, they have all focused on characters or world building that either the audience or the writers think is worthy of expansion (the metelbending academy, sukis imprisonment, ect). You'll also notice a meta theme in that all these comics are woman-focused, expanding the role and background of our female cast, this is a mystery mouse KaTool that'll help us later. This is interrupted by our deuteragoists of BHatTB.
The plot, in summary, is that June is hired to capture Iroh by an old soldier who served under iroh and wants revenge for Iroh leaving him in Ba Sing Sei. In the background is tea cartels and the dying career as a bounty hunter in a peaceful world.
The title would lead you to believe that both protagonists have equal impact but make no mistake this is an Iroh comic. I love Iroh as a character, bit this comic was written with the explicit effect of maintaining his pedestal. After hes captured by June he gives the "perfect" apology by hitting all the action points, initiating the apology and leaving June to accept it on her own time. Later we get an acceptance of the apology and she starts working for Iroh, making it explicit that he's been forgiven by June for how he acted in BotWT.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Secondly, in the beginning and end of the comic he explicitly rebukes his warmongering ways, apologizing to a earth kingdom protester (side note: this scene is a whole thing, I personally found it distasteful but I'll leave it to another day) and later apologizing to his ex-soldier while reinforcing his repentance for being a general. This is a more general apology to all the people who make "Iroh is a war criminal" memes.
2. Why was this nessesary
Because BotWT aged like milk. There's a conspiracy theory that the third writer, Ian Wilcox, was blacklisted from writing for the show after this, but I can't find any evidence other than the fact this was the only episode he wrote, compared to others writing multiple episodes, however he was a busy writer so he might've just not had time. Also both Bryan and Micheal are credited so their just as complicit.
Tumblr media
It makes the most likeable fire nation character so far seem incredibly creepy. Unfortunately it aired in 2005 and this was an incredibly common gag, especially in anime(and still is), which avatar took a lot of inspiration from (think of master Roshi from DB or Jiraiya from Naruto). Iroh is filling the pervy old man trope and in the early 2000s that was perfectly fine.
Tragically time isn't stationary and as writers rooms for cartoons have gotten more diverse we've all come to the conclusion it's weird as fuck. I think it's weird as fuck. However why did 1 scene from 1 episode nearly 20 years ago (I just gave myself psychic damage FUCK I'm old) need a comic tie in?
Because media literacy is dead and CinemaSins.
Okay no, so the TL;DR is that Iroh has become a mascot for avatar studios, but also people make perv and war criminal memes about him, and you don't want to sell merch with the war criminal on. So they did the beauty and the beast remake move and made a follow-up to address all the CinemaSin-esque takes.
Unfortunately the interesting part of Iroh is that he was a war criminal (this is a joke, IK they dont have Geneva, chill). He was an interesting shade of grey but when you put someone on a pedestal they either stay in the sky or fall, and avatar studios decided to build some scaffolding. This entire comic was a way to scrub the morally bad parts of Iroh away, and personally? I think that's pretty boring, so what else could we do?
3. The ReWrite
So first thing what's the comics theme? I don't want to change too much so let's keep that the same, luckily I think June's mum sums it up.
Tumblr media
Freedom, and along with that, responsibility to grant freedom. June wants to be free and gives freedom to Iroh, Iroh wants to be free of his guilt but to do so he must take responsibility, Fan and the others wanted freedom and took responsibility for their lives, making a homestead, and lastly Keung wanted Freedom from his past and was going to make Iroh take responsibility.
Metatextually this is also a comic about freedom for Iroh and June's characters by taking responsibility for what happened in BotWT, so we'll keep that theme.
Secondly, I lied about not making big changes, we're kicking out Iroh and the tea cartel plot. Our new title is The Bounty Hunter And The Fire Lord. Our new plot is going to be set after azula and the spirit temple, and follow an unsuccessful attempt my Zuko to find Azula with June's help. We're keep June struggling to find work, and even meeting Fan and the ex-hunters. We're also going to keep the fallout of BotWT.
5. Why Zuko
For this story I envision a fire nation that is returning to pre-war mentalities, and I think in this nation sexism would be returning hard. Just like the UK after WW2 women had been moving towards egalitarianism but were shoved back to the household once peace was established. In this climate Zuko doesn't know what to do, remember, the 2 non-genociding states are both patriarchal with misogyny baked in, the Water tribes are Overt, but outside of Kyoshi island we don't see women in power in the Earth Kingdom. Zuko doesn't have a societal reference for equality other than his homeland, and he's previously been erasing alot of fire nation culture (dragon hunting, colonies, royal deification), he's now dealing with advisors trying to tell him how women should act and he's frozen, should they be like the water tribes?
Secondly, Zuko has no female advisors, he has Katara and Toph as friends, he has Suki and Mai in the palace but none of them know the court machinations, not like Azula would. His mother has been out of the court longer than she was in it, and is still pretty traumatized. So, spurred on by his need to do the right thing and as another excuse to bring Azula back into the family, he hires June to help him find his sister.
I know it might seem out of left field but personally, it would be great worldbuilding for how we went from the treatment of Zeisan and Ursa to fire lord Izumi. Secondly Zuko is always itching to reconnect with Azula in the comics and he loves making bad decisions, he's also got more backstory with June than Iroh.
Onto the meat of it, on their road trip June opens up more to Zuko, same as she did with Iroh, and zuko uses June as a sounding board for all these questions he wants to ask Azula. June has traveled the world's underbelly, she knows what women are capable of and the calculating demeanor means she gives similar answers Azula would.
Eventually Zuko says he could've asked Iroh for his help on the topic, but June snorts at him, she tells the story of what happened to her from her POV. We don't have Iroh to give us a perfect apology, we have Zuko having to choose if he defends his uncles honour or not, who does he believe? This is what his story is about, does he believe his advisors or the women of his country.
Let June use her knowledge of what the dark side of the world is like, let her say what a noble fire nation man probably grew up hearing about women, especially when in the beginning of the war we see no female soldiers, so the gender roles where probably still enforced.
If you want to address Iroh's actions then have them serve the greater narrative, how have women been treated by the fire nation, and also don't have the interaction be kept to just June and Iroh, have it between a woman extending trust and a Fire lord who all to often puts Iroh on the same pedestal as the audience.
If you want, you can have a final scene with Iroh, where he sides with June and apologizes, but I think what we where given serves only the male cast and relegates June's story to a checklist, instead of treating it like a narrative she should get to control.
TL:DR
BHatTB whimped out on adressing Irohs actions, and it's easy to see that they did so just to get people to stop bringing it up. I'd instead propose this conversation happens with Zuko; with Zuko being treated as the audience, glamourisng Iroh, and June reinstating that he's still a human man, and that he isn't free of societal influence.
Have it be about freedom, both individually and societally, and responsibilities; to those you hurt and to those you've sworn to protect.
Again, this critique was focused on this one interaction, if I was to do a full rewrite I would change other aspects and flesh out how I think a June/Zuko road trip would go, still it would be vastly more interesting than what we got.

I do believe that Pan needs to be the next Mr Satan.
It goes like this: Pan sort of floats around for a while and doesn’t know where to put down her roots.
She feels bad about it, and wasn’t expecting this of herself - she was an opinionated and willful child, and she can’t believe that she’s lost now that she has the volition to go far.
Her parents are settled and set. Her uncle and Trunks seem settled - Goten had told her, as to soothe her, that “hey, I was a floater for a while too. I knew I wanted a family but I didn’t know what I’d do for work - and then Trunks approached me with the sword-fighting dojo idea, and now I’m here. He was a wandering soul himself, even. It took him a while to find the sword thing. So don’t sweat it. You’ll figure it out.”
But Pan is not mollified by this at all because it does not help her now. She’s lost NOW - and doesn’t know how to get to the supposed future where she isn’t.
Gohan, who has seen horrors unimaginable, cannot understand her attitude. There is peace. She can do anything she wants.
“But WHAT do I do?”
“Anything.”
“But WHAT?”
“Anything! There’s potential for anything! Don’t you see how that’s wonderful?”
But Pan almost wishes for another apocalypse so that her life journey would be clear.
Videl has always wanted to give Pan many options for conducting her life, and she’s affronted like Gohan when that is now somehow to Pan’s detriment.
She encourages Pan to try teaching at her martial arts school, and Gohan encourages her to be a tutor at his university - and neither feel right to Pan.
Meanwhile, Bura’s path has always been clear. She’s thrived in the environment of Capsule Corp. She has enough training by her father to hold her own against any Earth-borne foes, and she’s free to be a fashionable and intelligent powerhouse, even more intense than her mother. A career somewhere in the structure of Capsule Corp was imminent, and when Trunks finally abdicated the President’s chair, Bura knew precisely where she was to go. She became the second youngest Capsule Corp president at 21, and she’s on course to being the CEO after her mother.
Meanwhile, Marron has never had issues with feeling lost. Maybe it’s because she was always in an environment of ease at home, where lounging about at Kame House was a preferable and regular activity. She moves on to do something sweet and docile with her time, like becoming a dance teacher, or doing something with flowers, and she lives calmly and peacefully away from the spotlight and off of the radar.
Oh, but Son Pan just cannot find her roots! She snubs the footsteps of her parents, which feel right for THEM, but their place is not her place. She abhors the drama and show of her Grandfather Satan, which is dire to him, and something that he thrives in, but is only FRIVOLOUS to her. She needs something REAL. Her other grandfather, good lord -  she could never compare if she wants to have hobbies other than fighting. Besides, fighting is only fulfilling when there is someone bad to fight - and how often will that come up? Is she meant to spend her life training and waiting?
Lastly, her grandmother is a commendable woman, but after her children grew and flew away, she had nothing much to do. Pan sees her own youthful lack of direction mirrored in her grandmother’s late age, and she is not keen on living a life where she is doomed to repeat that era again. Even if she is already pretty good at keeping a house structured and clean.
So ... what does she do?
With Goten away at the dojo, Pan is eventually encouraged to step in on the Son family farm. Her father especially encourages it, as he thinks that it will benefit her to get in touch with the reality of wild nature. Furthermore, if she is trying to find roots, then Mt. Paozu is the place to find generations of them.
So for a while, Pan lives like her father, uncle, grandfather, and grandmother have; with the elements, organic and true. In this time, she helps to take care of her grandmother, works alongside her, and spends a lot of time with her. Chichi teaches her recipes, she tells her true tales of the epic adventures of years past, she teaches her how to haggle at the marketplace; she teaches her the value of a dollar, and Pan learns how much it pales compared to a drop of rain.
Pan vacillates in her opinion of the farm. She finds it useless, she finds it endless, she finds it secretly wise, she finds it mysterious, worthwhile, important, temporary, stifling, healing, not for her, the greatest gift, or just boring.
Her grandpa Goku, always warm yet ever absent, stands as a paragon of answers to her still. He’s a wise man to her, and she wonders more and more if she shouldn’t train with him for a maintained period of time. Then she hears his stories from Chichi, and she realizes that Goku had many wise old teachers in his day: from Korin to King Kai, he was always enabled by another. Goku himself is not a contained pinnacle of greatness, but the product of many teachers and warriors coming together and contributing their wisdom.
Pan is not prone to placing any one person on a pedestal anyway - and this is a Son family virtue in of itself - but the realization that the journey made the man and not the man the journey sinks in like new to her. Without realizing it, and without intending to follow any particular footsteps, Pan does set out on a journey like the one that Goku has in the original dragon ball. She packs a bag, and with no real agenda but to travel and see, she leaves Mt Paozu and starts walking in one direction.
She ends up being a bonafide wanderer for a few years. Trudging about with a walking stick. Swimming across rivers. Eating what she catches. And most importantly, solving problems from town to town.
It’s a big world outside of her big city. Every town has its own customs, traditions, beliefs, realities, and it doesn’t take long for her to forget all about the small world of global fame and space-traveling that she’s come from.
And it really is a fucked up world out there. Demons. Creatures. Pirate coves and booby traps. Man-eating gourds. Bullies and con-artists alike. Pan finds herself in some real situations, much like when she was in space, and exactly like the ones that the young Son Goku found right here on Earth - just some fucked up shit that takes some creative and quick thinking to get out of. Pan learns to love and admire and venerate the Earth based on the suffering and discomfort that it forces her to persevere through.
It’s a big world out there, and every anthill is rich and every fossil a book. Every town has its own mysteries and she does what she can to remedy their woes when applicable.
As she gets more and more capable at hunting, she comes to refuse all monetary payment. She expects nothing in return, but is more than grateful to accept clothes, tools, good food, good company, a warm place to sleep, good advice, and good conversation.
Son Pan becomes the Wandering Hero. She strengthens her moral center and finds only fulfillment in navigating - and sometimes failing hard at - the difficult ethical questions and circumstances that arise. It’s nothing that she could have accomplished reading her father’s philosophy books or listening to her mother preach passionately about justice - these are lessons that she can only learn herself, in action. Her mistakes cut deep and vindicate her reality; her regrets never leave and always steer her straight; and her successes are defined by the harmony of due comeuppance that sings in all parties.
In this time, she learns of what honor and justice are really, and she comes to dedicate herself to the virtue of balance in all contexts. This is something natural to her blood, but not something that she was to come into on blood alone. She becomes more a martial artist in this time, in head and spirit, then she ever would have training in the city.
She travels the globe and finds the definition of beauty in every corner. All the actions of her predecessors in the fantastic stories she’s heard make perfect sense to her now, and she realizes not that she comes from a group of rational or well-opinionated beings, but that she comes from a group who is astute and perceptive enough to read the overt truth: that there is no choice, there is no room for opinion - the Earth NEEDS to be protected at all costs. She comes from a group who’s been courageous enough to face that.
When she reflects back on why she had first embarked, she feels silly. A quest to find her place - it’s shallow. Her place? She’s alive on the planet Earth, isn’t that enough?
In this way, however, she does come to find herself. In searching the coves and corners of the Earth, she finds herself in all of it, and realizes her consummate place to be a denizen of it.
After this, she is inflamed with the necessity to strive to protect the Earth. Whereas before, waiting to defend it seemed dull, now she sees that the point isn’t in the success, but in the time spent preparing. To spend time not working in favor of the Earth is to waste time. She does train with Goku - and all of the rest who are willing. She spends a year with Roshi, even, running milk and plowing fields, and she leaves only because she becomes self-realized and noble enough to deign it fit to strike him HARD for his lecherous attempts at her.
She dares to train with Vegeta for a moment. At first he wouldn't have her, but she proves her determination and pride enough that he allows her to disappoint him properly. She spends a time with King Kai, and she has tea with the Kaioshins, and suddenly it’s looking like her space-traveling days again.
She eventually returns home, which is the point of it all, and her Grandpa Satan is getting old. He would like to spend the rest of his golden years watching the Golden Girls, and the stress of operating as the soothe-sayer and rallier for the world has begun to weigh on him. During these late years, Uub has begun to shoulder some of the responsibility, and he fights for Mr Satan as one of his pupils in the tournaments. Mr Satan still maintains the World Champion title, though at this point it is mostly honorary, because it is Uub who actually makes an appearance on the ring.
Uub is wicked strong, he brings fame fortune and honor to the human name, he has fought alongside Goku and Vegeta and I think at this point has even made a trip to Beerus’s world once - but he is a shy lad all the same, and he doesn’t necessary want world fame as much as he wants good friends. He’s happy to lead if he must, and will find great responsibility and satisfaction in the role, but, yknow, he likes eating and laughing with Goku, and training with Vegeta, and watching The Golden Girls with Mr Satan. He gets nervous on camera. And he’s not a good yarn-spinner. He’s a sensitive, genuine, and honest kind of person; he is nothing if he can’t find a place in and serve well his community, but there are other things he is more fit to do than be World Champion.
Pan and Uub have no doubt trained together. And TBH they’re not that far apart in age I feel like they could be gal pals. They could definitely talk. Oh they could definitely call each other on the phone and chat it up. Oh they would just understand each other so WELL. They’ve both spent time away from family and have a reserve of pain dedicated to that. At the same time, they’ve made the whole world their family. They are both dedicated to protecting it and serving it well. They have both humbled themselves before the endeavor of self-improvement.
They are both honored to be of service, but they get to talking, and Uub, in the name of paying comeuppance for the grief he’s caused himself, must lay bare his nature: he doesn’t know if he can be the World Champion after Mr Satan. He absolutely will if he must, but he scares himself when he thinks of how he’ll go about it. He can’t help but to think that he won’t inspire much confidence, that his character isn’t luxurious enough to rally an audience, that maybe it’s an ostentatious position that ought to fade from existence, that maybe the Earth doesn’t need talkers but walkers. He’s struggling at differentiating between when doubt is harmful vs when it’s a saving grace. He relents that - if his journey is to be perilous and perplexing and strenuously difficult, he will accept it with grace and graititude and stumble along. If he is to be handed the torch, the honor bestowed upon him by that action will carry him through, and he will become built for it out of necessity. He makes clear that he will be beyond humbled and will know the highest enjoyment if the Earth is to trust him with its delicacy and he is to take it in his hands, and he will conduct himself with valor, and he will believe in himself if the world does, because he would never forsake its opinion.
He’s made all the world a teacher, and he will never stop improving himself by it.
But. Well. It’s just that. He can’t help but to think. Well - he wants well for the world. And wouldn’t the world be better off with with a leader who was already fit for the job? So that it wouldn’t have to sit through a learning curve? No one can replace the King Lion that was Mr Satan, but, like, it’s just that, well Uub has been getting really into realty TV these days, and he would like to have the downtime to watch that, and also he hasn’t seen his mom in a while, and he starts sweating when you point a camera on him, and if he had to wear that hot and heavy World Champion cape he may just faint, and, like - all the world’s a teacher, and he feels that there is harmony in that, and if he has to go up on stage and rally a crowd for no good discernible reason, just to maintain a title, well, what’s the point of that?
When Pan was young, she made clear that she did not want to be the next Mr Satan. Then she moved farther from her parents’s paths, and now in a circuitous way, she’s arrived closer to all of them than where she’s started. In the interest of finding a role, in placing roots, is there anyplace more pertinent than the life of her grandfather, whose life work has been to unify and heal the hearts and minds of the people on Earth? In studying tight niches to find herself in all of it, in traveling far to find herself in the blood she’s always carried with her - the role of her grandfather Satan is the one role of her kin that she hasn’t yet indirectly and inexorably pursued.
It’s the role to tie it all together. At a few key points, Earth would not have persevered, or navigated with much health or success, through dire circumstances without the spokesman unifying all of Earth’s various, small, beautiful corners. When the Earth at large is at stake, all the forces therein need to join their efforts together to protect what they love, and there is a necessary catalyst for that, a unifying voice that all can sing to.
The Earth has warriors looking out for it, training far in space in order to maintain Earth’s place in the broader order. There are warriors training within the Earth to enable a good cause, in swordfighting dojos and schools that bear a family name and significance. There are business leaders, presidents and CEOs, doing what they were born to do and wearing what they love to wear. There are farmers and mothers, there are scholars, there are people adding to destiny by doing what they enjoy.
And there’s a symbol for all of this, one individual who can stand at the top with solid feet and a confidence that reflects not just inner strength but the strength that comes from serving, and being loved by, others.
It’s in her blood. It’s in her roots. She’s when the unstoppable house of Goku meets the dazzling house of Satan, where the soul is of pure passion, where humility embraces confidence, where love and and devotion is multiplied beyond count.
She couldn’t have become the next World Champion when she was young. Though she was photogenic and flamed with showmanship when inspired, that was all the merit she saw in the job, and that was not enough for her; ibso facto, she was not enough for it, all the symbolic meaning being lost on her.
Now, she can do it, and may be the only one who can. It all comes together. Everything that she’s learned, seen, heard - all the values that have been endowed upon her since the cradle - can come into play.
She loves her Grandpa Satan anyway. She would be so happy and honored to take the torch, and to make him happy.
And she loves the Earth, and she loves the people on it. There’s power and hope and potential in every soul, no matter how small of a corner one hails from, and Pan would find actualization in harmonizing them all into one consolidated force. This is the Earth loving itself. Consider this her Saiyaman phase.
As World Champion, she would be very different from the lion Mr Satan was. Mr Satan had his beginnings in a genuine passion for the martial arts, but he is also grandiose and self-important by nature, and so he took to fame as fate expressly bid it. He is sustained by the veneration and adoration of others, and this served him well as he always sought to communicate to the public a version of a story that was both believable and that inspired confidence, comfort, and excitement. Despite it all, Mr Satan is still the most in-touch with the average human out of all of the Z fighters, and this has made him an effective leader. He is also a very gifted yarn-spinner. As in big fat liar. And that’s fine. It all worked out perfectly in the end. But.
That’s not how Pan is gonna be World Champion. She has no interest in lying, or gloating, or extolling, or embellishing, or fabricating. The job does require some small ... re-identifying of certain events, and Son Pan will not be too good to lie by omission. But she’s not here to make up tales. That was her grandpa’s job. Her job is to walk, not talk.
Her presence on stage is much less for the benefit of the audience. Rather than giving them what they want to hear, SHE tells THEM what they want to hear - she steps out on stage in heavy boots, heavy belt, heavy cape and says “Alright, listen up-” and tells them what they need to hear and what she needs them to understand.
This presence of course commands so much respect, and it still runs well on camera. This is an aesthetic and presentation that the magazines can run fine with.
If Mr Satan was the King Lion, she is The Sergeant - all the command of her grandmother, all the competence of her paternal grandfather, all the conviction of her mother, and all the commitment of her father.
Despite this look, she is not into the cigars like her grandfather and mother are. She prefers to not compromise herself with substances, and when she does, it is with sweets and treats and ice cream delights.
She doesn’t humor dumb questions at interviews, and she is incredibly perceptive, knowing what’s being asked better than the interviewer - she will ascertain what REALLY wants to be known, and she won’t hold back when delivering.
She is succinct, effective, and at times laconic. She’s stoic when she needs to be, but she’s also comfortable on camera, and she knows when and how to have a little fun. As a fighter in the tournaments, she likes to prolong the battle for a while, and teach as much as she can in that time.
As a leader, she inspires obedience and confidence, and all the world can feel that she loves them more than they know. May they never know, and never have to see her fall for them.
But hey. It’s just the family business, right? Everything will always return to this, because nothing else has ever actually mattered.
And she still has Girl’s Night with Uub and Bura and Marron and you know she’s buying. After all, a dollar’s value pales when compared to a drop of rain, and its best use is when buying for friends.

what do u think are the z fighters opinions on crocs i think Trunks would have a collection of them
I agree.
The fashion in dragon ball is so charmingly horrible that I think that more than one character would wear crocs. Like Roshi.
CHICHI HATES THEM.
Everybody else lives alongside them in peace .. <3

i dont understand the circumstances of Yamucha and Tenshinhan’s continued exposure and friendship but in my head it’s like they sort of hover around each other becasue they are good sparring partners & friends but they also do a fair bit of wandering away from each other as well
There should be a scene where it’s nighttime and Yamucha walks into a pond and just stands in it and he’s doing some thinking about how in the recent excursion to the city that he had with tenshinhan (they were doing roshi a favor and it involved a multi-day hike through a few different municipals) there were some moments that seemed to imply a budding romantic tension between the two and so now yamucha is standing in the water doing some thinking on how to handle this with grace
Then he takes start becasue he senses someone approaching and he turns around and Tenshinhan has shown up. and they stare at each other for a bit and then Tenshinhan says “What are you doing in my thinking pond.”
And Yamucha is like .. “YOUR thinking pond?”
and since it’s now become clear that they both frequent this pond & that it’s perhaps near and dear to the both of them, they think simultaneously “i better not tell him that i pee in it all of the time.”
and then they yknow have some sort of conversation that tries to dispel the tension but it doesn’t do much. and eventually they go their separate ways, as in Yamucha heads on back home.
And Tenshinhan looks like he’s gonna do some thinking andf he steps into the thinking pond to do some thinking but then he just takes his weewee out and starts peeing in the water and the chapter ends

- Tenshinhan sleeps with his third eye open becasue he thinks it is good practice to be perpetually vigilante but what he doesnt know is that if he's sleeping really hard then all of his eyes will close becasue he's just sleeping so hard man. Yamucha sees this and one day their conversation is comfortable enough that Yamucha can ask him "is there any particular pattern as to or reason for when you sleep with all eyes closed or just the one open?" To which Tenshinhan responds with. "Why are you watching me sleep."
- He wakes up at 7:00 AM SHARP every morning WITHOUT any sort of alarm btw.
- He could eat tree bark without issue or fanfare if he really applied himself.
- He's actually the most interesting character in dragon ball after Launch and the most perfect character after Launch. He's 4th in line in terms of aesthetic deliciousness and intrigue (Murasaki, Launch, General Blue, Ten)
- He does have a hot boy summer with Yamucha but it's not forever. As a martial artist he is very intuned with himself and the art of discipline, and at first he finds the nature of attraction to be disorderly, but after a conversation with Yamucha he decides that it's a feeling like any other that should acknowledged and even danced with, because that's life. But also like any feeling or emotion, it has its say and then it passes, and Ten lets it leave with everpresent serenity and grace. He is still good friends with Yamucha and he cares about him and loves him and they understand each other and Ten still wants to see him, but he is no longer physically or sensually attracted to him, and that should be fine & good & natural but Yamucha takes it kind of hard and starts hitting the bourbon
- Hes such an interesting guy like honestly .. He shows up. He's bald. He has a little buddy who is his BFF. I think that Ten needs that, I think that it's in his natal chart, it's in the stars - hes a self-sufficient independent reserved kind of guy but he NEEDS a little buddy in his lifetime. For some reason. And Chaozu is fully self-actualized I think, he's independent, he doesnt need a buddy. Chaozu is sociable enough and would enjoy traveling and taking strangers out for coffee just to see what sorts of things they talk about. He comes to be Over this coil of turmoil and violence, he wants to have coffee with strangers. But Ten needs a little buddy so he hangs around yknow
And Ten has 3 eyes for some reason i guess just to make his character visually interesting without being too obtuse or exhausting, since he was to become a good guy, and Toriyama didnt really know how to draw the 3rd eye with the natural sauce that he was able to draw the other two with, so it looks sort of stupid and superfluous. And the fact that he has 3 eyes does come up but not that thoroughly. Like he has sharper optic abilities for it OK so what. Goku could have done that too if you had given him like 5 extra minutes and 20 extra push-ups.
And when Ten and Chaozu show up at the tournament it is ON SIGHT for Ten and Yamucha for NO REASON. There is no beef. Goku had that run-in with them prior, not Yanucha. Why is there beef? Theres, like, no drama, theres really no problem. AND YET .. IMMEDIATELY .. Ten and Yamucha start bad-mouthing each other and cutting each other with repartee like WHYYYYY there was really NO ISSUE here.....! And then Ten breaks Yamucha's leg for it. It's so overwrought and catty.
And then throughout the tournament Ten starts to have a moral crisis becasue Roshi plucked at the shred of virtue in Ten's heart by making him live with the ignominy of that sort of "victory," thus forcing Ten to confront Roshi after the fact which is also ibso facto Ten confronting that shred of virtue.
And I havent seen it yet but I know that Launch falls in love with him and I'm so looking forward to that
And Ten is just this Guy and if I hadnt seen him in Z already then I would be so senselessly enamoured becasue like ... he shows up ... hes evil for NO reason ... he has 3 eyes for NO reason ... hes super strong becasue anything is possible ... he has a soul that runs deep and a contemplative mind .. the ocean of his being has been colored with spilled blood and hes starting to see it for the pollutant that it is ... he wears the muscle mass so well and the art is good .. And he has a little buddy who doesnt need him as much as Ten need him and we never even see that but i just happen to know it. What a guy

Like OK obviously Oolong was pretty acutely abused by a caretaker / the same old man he imprinted on, that’s why he wears old man clothes and lives alone in that travel trailer like a middle aged man and conducts himself like a middle aged man, and that’s why he ends up being drawn to and living his days out with another old man (Roshi). Like obviously he has been the victim of sexual abuse and that’s why he was so staunchly opinionated and repulsed by male genitalia when it came up (early dragon ball), and that’s why he perpetuates a hypersexual attitude himself, and why it’s specifically only for women specifically out of necessity he needs to prove that he’s all about women and that he’s innocent in that regard becasue he’s just a normal pig who loves women and a man has never crossed his space obviously. Not ever. That did not happen. That’s also why in DBS he retroactively described that run-in with Roshi that he had while appearing as Bulma as “mildly traumatizing.”
But obviously he’s just a kid and he needn’t live this way. It’s so sad. And his behavior is DEPLORABLE and it’s also abysmal the way that the more he lives this way, the more people will treat him accordingly, and the more ingrained into his self-image this will be. And he’s still just a kid and he does make innocent mistakes sometimes but no one believes that they’re innocent because why would they (like during the second tenkaichi tournament arch in dragon ball where he went into the ladies bathroom by genuine error.)
It’s dragon ball and bad things happen all of the time and the characters just have to live with it. But Oolong stays a part of the cast and he never gets any sympathy or development or any hope for healing. He’s just like this now.  And it’s fine for a kid to conduct himself like a middle-aged man but it’s just sad becasue I know he’s not living his best life, not even close. Sad
Honestly Oolong is kind of completely annoying. He was cool at first with his little imperialist outfit and later his old man suspenders but now I'm tired of him becasue all he does is try to get at girls. Like GET A NEW HOBBY GIRL ... he should go to rehab to kick his addiction to woman legs and they should teach him to play with Littlest Pet Shop I think he would really enjoy that
