The petit bourgeoisie is often characterized historically by instability, attracted to the comforts of a bourgeois lifestyle above while fearful of proletarianization from below. This fundamental contradiction frequently produces secondary contradictions in the political positions they adopt.

One common stance among petit bourgeois radicals in the imperial core is their desire to appear supportive of radical uprisings and revolts. They often support forms of resistance up to a certain point—usually stopping when state power is gained. If they do gain state power, they tend to abhor it, exhibiting a general anti-statist, anti-party orientation. Figures like Hardt, Negri, Žižek, and Badiou, among others, exemplify this approach, though with minor exceptions.

This petit bourgeois radicalism celebrates rebellions that pose no real substantive threat to the capitalist system because they tend to be either unorganized or permeated by petit bourgeois radical ideologies. This position allows the petit bourgeois intelligentsia to occupy a comfortable stance: they align themselves with symbols of radicalism, waving red flags and branding themselves as "true communists" or "only true radicals." Yet, when challenged, their positions reveal themselves as fundamentally anti-communist and often even accommodationist to capitalism, if not outright imperialism.

This phenomenon manifests as a specific form of petit bourgeois radicalism. Here, the intellectuals of the petit bourgeoisie want to appear radical but do not desire systemic change, as they profit handsomely from the existing system. Just as the labor aristocracy occupies the top of labor pyramids, the intellectual labor aristocracy—particularly the stars of the theory industry—are positioned at the apex of an extensive system of both economic and symbolic value.

Take someone like Žižek: would he have any material interest in seeing imperialism come to an end? As an intellectual at the top of an imperial intellectual apparatus, the answer is no. His radicality, then, makes sense as a façade—a posture that signals radicalism while reinforcing the system that elevates him. This contradiction is essential to understanding the faux radicality prevalent among the petit bourgeois intelligentsia.
