Artwork of RMS Germanic II (1916), the some-what intended replacement for RMS Titanic. She was ordered by White Star Line in 1913 and her keep was to be laid down at the end of June 1914. Her Harland & Wolff hull number was #470 (later used for the SS Laurentic (1927)). Her construction was put on hold once WWI started and eventually removed from the book in 1919.
"Your Directors have authorized the construction of a steamer of about 33,600 tons and 19 knots speed for the New York-Liverpool service of the White Star Line, to be named 'Germanic,' and to be of the 'Adriatic' type, with such alterations and improvements as experience has suggested and as are made possible by her greater size. It is expected that the 'Germanic' will be completed in time to enter the service in 1916, and that she will be an exceedingly attractive steamer."
"We are building a new ship for the Liverpool-New York service, which is to be called the Germanic, and it will be a larger ship than the Adriatic but would be smaller than Olympic. He indicated that the her length overall would be about 746 feet. The length between perpendiculars, 720 feet, matches Sanderson's description for a ship that was slightly longer overall; she was to be 88 feet in breadth and her propelling machinery would consist of reciprocating engines driving a central propeller."
She was renamed RMS Homeric after WWI started and was later cancelled due to the war. Her role was eventually filled when Columbus, a liner of the North German Lloyd shipping Company, was ceded by Germany to England and then sold to White Star line, which renamed to RMS Homeric.
Not much is know about this ship. It is possible her materials were used for Laurentic, which was completed in 1927 and her hull number (470) is too low for that time period (SS Doric, completed in 1923 and has the hull number of 573).

A Short Odyssey
On July 16, 1935, the newly merged Cunard White Star line was represented by Homeric at the Spithead merchant fleet review for King George V’s silver jubilee. The ship had been launched in 1913 for Norddeutscher Lloyd under the name Columbus, but was given up unfinished six years later as part of war reparations to Great Britain. She was then sold to White Star, and, under the watchful eyes of…

The mall closest to my place is still dying a slow death. When I visited yesterday, two more stores had closed--and they were major chains, not local retailers. Maybe Spencer's is single-handedly keeping this place alive.
Rue 21 had one new item: a single pair of sweatpants alone on a shelf.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
One of the "nerdy" stores had a dice set featuring everyone's favorite pickle.
Tumblr media
Spencer's had a single new mug. Now you can drink out of Rick's head!
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The manager mentioned to me that new merchandise (in general, not specifically RM) was coming after they completed inventory on the 31st, so that might explain the lack of new products post-holiday season. We're also not getting season eight until next year, but that probably won't stop Adult Swim's marketing team.
Today, I decided to visit chain stores in an area that I don't normally visit. I walked into Five Below to see this near the doorway:
Tumblr media
I've seen the monthly illustrations on another calendar, but that cover is new. And shiny ✨
Tumblr media
Need a place to store your loose AirPods? Try this fashionable Rick and Morty case featuring Rick's boyish grin.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Time for a new store that I'd never visited, at least in adulthood: T. J. Maxx. I saw this hoodie ages ago in Journey's. Now it's back, in thrift store form! One of my favorite designs. 🌈
Tumblr media Tumblr media
A visit from the Portal Boyz! Technically, Nick and Morty were the Portal Boyz, but I guess nobody wants Nick merchandise.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Afterward, I went to Target for the first time in a while. They had the Rick and Morty manga in stock. I actually didn't know it was a graphic novel--I thought it was just another issue of the comics.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Weirdly, they also had a shirt that Journey's used to carry. Pretty unusual for me to see the same item in two separate chains. Anyway, I guess nobody's tired of wearing a shirt that says, "I am in great pain, please help me."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Serendipitously, I spotted this on a car when I left. Fuck me for not buying anything, I guess.
Tumblr media
One last stop: the nearby head shop. I have no idea what these things are, but Rick's trying out some new looks.
Tumblr media
Roll some grass on this vinyl rolling tray.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
Evil Morty finally gets his own pipe!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
While you're at it, stock up on Rick and Morty vapes.
Tumblr media
He's a happy Homer!
Tumblr media
And they had no shortage of bootleg shirts and hoodies.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
No season eight merchandising blitz this year, but smoke shops are always on it. It's never the wrong time to buy a T-shirt of Morty Smith getting blasted!

Ok, I’m sorry if anyone thinks I’m dead wrong…..
Tumblr media
But the Homeric just doesn’t look right from a profile view.
Tumblr media
From this kinda view, she’s gorgeous.
Tumblr media
But the way her funnels seem disproportionately smaller than her hull just make her seem…. Off.
However I will admit she is slightly good looking, just not very high in my book.

How does Spriter Drago feel about the Homeric?
That is such an obscure choice as far as ocean liners go, Anon! I love the Homeric!
She was one hell of a running mate for Old Reliable. She was no Majestic or Britannic or Titanic, but she was scrappy, like an even littler sister. Built with steerage in mind, quick thinking saved her from being instantly obsolete, and then her cruising days came about.
She had one thing up on her adoptive sister. Olympic may have sailed on after every crash, but Homeric hardly had any crashes, really just one.
Homeric was a strong-willed gal that survived a hurricane. She got to be in George V’s fleet review, and then one hell of a last season.
Homeric may not have been one of the greatest liners, but you better believe she came close. She was most certainly a Home at Sea.

I have marinated myself in this album for nearly a full week and what a week it has been. I think this album is kind of flawless. Like Mahalia on Closer, 'We've got dynamite in our DNA' in 'All Day'? The beautiful tones of Kim Sawol in 'Forg_tful'? How did I exist before this record? I have no idea.
Anyway these are some books that make me think of these songs.
Yun (with Erykah Badu) - I thought about this alot, and I was trying to think of a way to explain humans in a book, and maybe a book that is a combination of art, philosophy and humans, is 'The Unbearable Lightness Of Being' by Milan Kundera. It's not a book for everyone, but it does combine elements of Psychology and Philosophy and certainly reflects on being human. RM has also read it apparently, so maybe there's something to this.
Still Life (with Anderson Paak) - One of the biggest bops on this record with a great video I might add, I consider this song the antithesis of 'Black Swan' here the artist is very much coming back and revelling in the stillness and to keep on moving onwards. I think a good suggestion here is 'I Want To Die, but I Want To Eat Tteokpokki' by Baek Se-Hee. A book about a woman talking to her therapist, I think it's very much about breaking out your own mould.
All Day (With Tablo) - I love this song so much. A song about the world, and politics and standing up when they say behave, this song is definitely one of my favourites on this album. If you want a perspective on the political history of South Korea, I would recommend Han Kang's Human Acts. Based on the events of the Gwangju Uprising, which both J-Hope and Suga have referenced in songs before, this book is not light, but it is incredible and defined by the people who stood.
Forg_tful (with Kim Sawol) - Her voice is so pretty on this song, it's a beautiful listen. This song is about nature and sometimes the fleeting nature of existence, and maybe that's why I was thinking of 'The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue' by V. E. Schwab. The story of a girl whose existence is forgotten in a day, it gave me vibes. This one was so difficult to think of, but I feel like it has the elements.
Closer (with Honne, Mahalia and Paul Blanco) - You know I was thinking about this so long, it actually hurt my head, but I remembered this book by David Levithan called Everyday I liked and it kinda me think huh. About a boy a wakes up in the body of someone new everyday until he ends up at Justin, and meets his girlfriend, it's a weird one, but I think a really good one and you can't be more under the skin can you?
Change Pt 2 - Go off Namjoon, I guess. I respect this song so much in that it's honest, it's confrontational and he recorded it drunk, and it makes for an added emotion to it, especially those last lines. If this song is about becoming what you truly were meant to be, I was thinking of Circe by Madeleine Miller. The story of a witch sent to an island as punishment and what happens to her and how she takes control of her life after having none is incredible, and I think if you have read both, you'd get it.
Lonely - I can't imagine how it must feel to be feel so lonely in a city coloured purple in your honour, that must be heartbreaking for someone to deal with, hence how we got this song. A song about just wanting to go home, maybe a good story about someone who is just trying to do that is 'The Odyssey' by Homer. The story of Odysseus (self-fulfilling prophecy much?) whose trying to get home after the Trojan War, Namjoon is a modern day Odysseus, does he have to deal with a witch, Hydra and Cyclops? No, but he does have the world on his shoulders.
Hectic (with Colde) - A song about a hectic life and not being able to see the good and smooth compared to the rough, I was thinking about days that were important to have all the time you need, and maybe a good example of this is 'They Both Die At The End' by Adam Silvera. The story of two boys who realise they only have one day left to live, I can imagine this song might be quite relevant to them on their last day.
Wildflower (with Youjeen) - The first glimpse of the album we had, Wildflower is about staying rooted but keeping yourself moving and living for yourself and you know what go this man for letting themselves be compared to flowers. What I think is a great recommendation for this song is Wild by Cheryl Strayed, the story of a woman who goes on a road trip after divorce, and wander 11000 miles discovering herself along the way and isn't that very wildflower? In my opinion yes.
No. 2 (with Park Jiyoon) - I thought about this alot, and I know the recording at the end was recorded secretly as they walked through a park, I believe and then they sampled it in so taking in nature and moving forward. One of my favourite quotes is:
“Oh, to be alive in such an age, when miracles are everywhere, and every inch of common air throbs a tremendous prophecy, of greater marvels yet to be.”
from Walt Whitman, and when I hear this song it kinda reminds me of someone finding their wonder again. So I think a good suggestion might be Leaves of Grass by Walt Whitman. Because if anything this album is, it's a collection of songs of himself, but also it expresses the cyclical nature of life. If anything Indigo is, it's an exploration, of nature, humanity and being who you are, there is no better poetry collection that defines that.
-x-
What would you recommend based on these songs?
Let me know!
Vee xo.
