commander week day 1: race
im always thinking about the one (1) line of dialogue balthazar blessed humans get in path of fire. so obviously as a filthy human fan i took it and ran
content warnings: spoilers for path of fire and implied canon-typical violence
note: takes place sometime after the departing but before to kill a god… also I did NOT proofread this. we ball 💪
The altar to Balthazar loomed before Lazarus, who kneeled in front of it, hands clutched in a desperate prayer. He knew better than to pray to a rogue god, but visiting the temple had been a nightly ritual for him for as long as he could remember. Going without would only make him feel more hollow.
“Balthazar, hear me,” he began with a whisper, though his words lacked any confidence. There was nothing he could say that would improve the situation, but nevertheless, he stumbled through the rest of the sentence.
“I beg of you to stop this.”
He sat quietly for a moment, mulling over his next words. Balthazar was clearly unwilling to listen to reason. The gods understood magic better than anyone. Balthazar should know that killing Kralkatorrik outright would only lead to disaster. All he wanted was an explanation. If he could understand the god’s perspective, maybe he could do something--anything--to stop him.
“I have enjoyed your blessings for as long as I can remember. Prayed every day and night for years. Fought and killed in your name,” he continued. Where was he going with this? Balthazar made it clear that he cared little for anything Lazarus had to say. Even as one of his most devoted followers; even after waging wars and slaying dragons in his name, Balthazar would not give Lazarus a second glance. The thought made tears well up in his eyes, but he blinked them away. He had to stay strong. If anyone was going to kill Balthazar, it was going to be him.
Looking towards the floor, Lazarus considered his next steps. Expecting the god of war to use any solution that doesn’t involve violence was wildly irrational. The wound from where his greatsword cleaved him clean in half ached from the effort of kneeling, a constant painful reminder of the fact. Lazarus couldn’t decide if the injury or the betrayal felt worse.
“Please, just hear me out. I know you’re listening. The last thing I want to do is fight you,” he paused with a grimace, adjusting himself on the prayer mat. “I know you know this isn’t going to work. Just give me one chance, I can prove it to you, I--”
Lazarus interrupted himself with a few coughs, tasting metal in his mouth. The day’s battles against the Forged left him exhausted, and the lingering pain from his last encounter with Balthazar was starting to get to him. He slowly, carefully pushed himself to his feet before sending a final forlorn look towards the altar. If things continued how they were, it would probably be his last opportunity to pray to his patron before one of them was dead.
“Thank you. I’m sorry,” he took a deep breath, biting his tongue.
Turning away from the shrine, he concluded his prayer:
“I wish it didn’t have to be like this.”

"losing my religion" is an expression that isn't used much anymore. It means losing your temper. So in the song of the same name, the loss is not gentle or quiet. He's freaking out in the corner, causing a scene, that's why he's in the spotlight. The double meaning is also intended. What he's losing is his faith in the person he loves, or in their relationship, and maybe that means he loses faith in himself. He's been running his whole world around this person. So they are his religion. So this is heretic, this is blasphemy, so how can this be happening. He is losing his entire worldview, and nothing makes sense anymore. And he is going down kicking and screaming about it.
