Note
I think we're coming at this from different angles; I'm responding to a broad variety of examples here so much of the communication error is on me.
Most of the stuff I'd say in response to your first part was said pretty well by youzicha here. I'd just add on that I don't think PO is never seen, just vastly overstated; it occurs mainly in industries with low competition and easy consumer capture. It's very notable that your examples were all tech! Apple sucks, FTC pls nerf, R2R forever, but I see people apply this to everything from sewing machines to gloves and I don't think it's broadly true.
I'll also note that $700 for a sewing machine is a significant chunk of change. I'm by no means a seamstress, I occasionally mend a tear but anything requiring real work goes to a tailor. That said: when I look up sewing machines, prices vary from $100 for the ones I assume are cheap shit to $300 for the "computerized" and presumably swanky ones.
$700 buys you an industrial sewing machine, which I imagine can do a lot more! It's also probably not necessary if you're not doing as much sewing as a tailor. And that's how much a home use one used to cost! It used to be a purchase closer to a used car than a week's groceries.
As for your followup on externalities:
Yeah I do think the average person who talks about this overestimates the externalities and underestimates the benefits; I see a lot more discussion (with regard to products) on the problems of landfills and overseas shipping (the former of which is not as important as a climate change and the latter of which is not the main driver) and a lot less about driving and disposal of batteries. If someone is driving 10 miles out of their way to get a longer lasting jacket, they're doing a lot worse for the climate than whatever they're replacing.
Re: cost of labour, I agree that it sucks that so many products essentially rely on slave labour of some sort and I think there should be stiff penalties for importing products made with it; that major electronics and goods are built on the back of slave mines is awful.
that said, that's also sort of orthogonal to the specific discussion of planned obsolescence; a sweatshop making long-lasting shirts can make them with the same labourers paid the same amount a day. Using less materials overall will not change the labour relations there; supporting labour movements will.
WRONG. BLOCKED.
There's a whole effort post in me somewhere about this: I really do think cheap shit gets a bad rap. It's not a capitalist conspiracy to make you buy more stuff. It's really nice to be able to use things for awhile and then change. If I had to wear the same clothes I bought when I stopped growing over a decade ago, or fucking hell from decades ago, I'd be a lot more miserable.
There's costs in more production, both in terms of more raw materials and more garbage produced, but I think a lot of people overestimate the externalities there and underestimate the benefits.its cool to see a Sewing machines from the 30s that still works, but it also cost over $700 in modern terms, which you had to pay upfront instead of over time, and had costs in time, money, and energy to keep it on working order.
Even if you could get a lightbulb that lasted 100 years, you're gonna be shit out of luck if and when you drop it and it shatters. (Also the lightbulb planned obsolescence thing is much more complicated than usually described. It's a tradeoff point)

Rags to Riches Challenge Live the Farm Life Edition, by Orianas SimStudio
Hello, hello!!
Ok, I'm absolutely obsessed with the new pack for The Sims 4, Cottage Living, then again who isn't? It has everything we wanted and more!!! I can't handle the cuteness of the bunnies, the chickens, the ducks???
Tumblr media
Everything is amazing! I can't remember the last time I've been so caught up with gameplay. I haven't even built anything yet!!!
So, I did something... After seeing so many Simmers playing the challenge 'Rags to Riches' with the new pack (one of them being @misslollypopsims), I went searching for some specific rules for Cottage Living. I even asked her but like me, she couldn't find any... So, what did I do? If you said: "she created her own" you'd be absolutely correct!
I designed a completely new challenge adapting the 'Rags to Riches' rules to the Cottage Living gameplay. And oh boy, it's not an easy one... but we love challenges, right? Right?... Let's say yes.
Tumblr media
So, I'll be playing my own challenge live on Twitch (follow me on IG to know when I'll be live) together with laursimming (check out her IG and YouTube, she's incredible). Oh and btw, the voice you hear on the promo below?? That's hers!! Isn't she amazing??
Join us live on Twitch to learn about all the rules, and watch me struggle while I play-test the challenge and regret all the difficulties I created with this new challenge!
Join us, while we Live The Farm Life!

You can download a printing option of the challenge rules here (with checkboxes to keep track of your tasks and handy checklists): TS4 R2R Challenge - Live the Farm Life Edition, by Orianas SimStudio
And if you want the official logo to use on your own posts/videos, you can download the transparent one here (please do not edit/change/crop the logo): R2R Challenge - Live the Farm Life Edition, by Orianas SimStudio Official Logo
Guidelines
You can’t use cheats - only the ones to take money out, move objects or CAS editing
You and your spouse/partner cannot hold jobs, so make sure to live farm life to the fullest
At the beginning, you can’t sleep in your lot until you have a bed. You can instead have a tent, and sleep in public places
You can only eat what you pick and you can cook on your lot if you have a fire pit (in the beginning) and if you have the ingredients
You can’t keep the money earned from your hobbies, unless it’s from cross-stitching or flower arrangements (more about this on The Farm Life Goals)
This challenge can go through as many generations as you like, so it’s up to you how quickly you want to achieve the big goals. Except for the specific ones for the founder and their spouse/partner, all the other goals won’t have a time limit
As a teen, you can go to school or not, it’s up to you
Little tip: Start with the Mayor for the errands. Their tasks are the starter ones and will help you get to know the community and the world
If you want to play in the same lot as I am (built by laursimming), you can download it from both our galleries (orianassimstudio or laursimming)
Starting the Challenge
Lifespan: Normal
Autonomy: Full
Age to start: Teen
Aspiration: Country Caretaker
Traits: Animal Enthusiast + two of your choice Trait 1: ______________________ Trait 2: ______________________
No likes or dislikes! Your sim must naturally gain these
Start on the empty lot from Henford-on-Bagley and your lot must have the Simple Living and Wild Foxes challenges (remove the Off the Grid challenge that is already pre-set for the lot or keep it if you want an even bigger challenge). No lot traits (eg. great soil etc.) can be applied until after finishing your degree, because as you know, you first must learn how to improve your lot for a farm. On completion, you may add any you like
Starting Funds
You must start with 0 simoleons
You can only earn money from errands and selling fish in the market shops. You can’t earn money from crops or animals until you have completed your degree
No sales from inventory! Never. Ever! Immerse yourself in the community by either selling on the market stalls, or having your own selling table
Building the Farm
You must gain the following skill levels: Logic: 3 Handiness: 3
You have to pay §500 to the council before you start building walls, you don’t want your neighbours complaining about the noise!
To move on to the next set of goals, you have to have at least one of each: Toilet Bed Shower or tub Sink Stove Chair or sofa Counter Fridge
Working the Land
You must complete every task for Building the Farm because you are living here forever and, you need a proper home
You have to have a Biology uni degree to start earning money on your farm. You need to first learn the basics. Due to your rocky start in life, you don’t qualify for any scholarships, so you can’t apply for those. No distinguished degree here… If you don’t own Discover University, you must pay §3000 to keep going, this is roughly the cost of the degree - think of it as online tuition fees in real life
You can’t live on campus, you have to stay on your lot
Pause aging up while in uni, but while you are attending, you can’t earn any money. Plan wisely before going
Always choose 4 classes so you speed through your semesters, but also to add difficulty at this stage
The only things you can develop while aging is paused are relationships, the skills you have to develop in your classes, and of course the ones you can’t control and happen through gameplay (eg. cooking to live!)
Before you are able to build a proper crop garden and have livestock, you should have completed all the above rules
You must pay §500 to the contractors to received the blueprints for your land
Include a pond on your lot. You can add any animals to it
From now on, you should live wholly off your land and produce from the animals. Don’t forget, if you stock your ponds with fish, you can sell catches in the village markets or via the selling tables. Or eat it!
A Functional Farm
To enjoy life on your farm, and after completing all the above assignments, you need to have a fully functional home so you can progress in life. For that you need to have at least:
A living area/room
A kitchen area
2 or 3 bedrooms
A dining space
2 bathrooms
An office area, so you can manage all daily runnings of the farm
Prepare to have a Family
Everything above should be completed. Find the love of your life! You can already have met them or find a new Sim or create a new one
If you create your spouse/partner in CAS, make sure to randomise their traits. The starting aspiration should be the Country Caretaker, so they learn the farm life
If your spouse/partner is a townie Sim, change their aspiration to Country Caretaker as soon as you marry them. Again, they need to learn the farm life
Marry your chosen one and pay for that wedding (costs § 1000), or if you don’t want to marry, simply deduct the same amount from your household - you still need to pay for the civil partnership license!
Everything they bring to the marriage/partnership, must be taken out. You can’t keep the money or the furniture
Expand your Family
To have kids, you have to be married/living together first
You must have §5000 saved up in order to have a child. Kids are expensive!
You can have/adopt as many kids as you want
You must reach the minimum parenting skill of level 3
You must not age your kids, you must wait for them to naturally grow
If you are playing the challenge through several generations, the heir must always have good grades and at least 2 skills max’d out. The ‘responsible’ trait here is advised, but not mandatory
Teenagers can’t have part-time jobs, they need to help with the farm and/or run errands to earn money for the family piggy bank
Have grandchildren, be a loving grandparent
Aspiration Goals
You must complete the Country Caretaker aspirations for both you and your spouse/partner
The heir must complete their aspirations too (the child’s included)
Money Goals
You must have a house worth §100,000
You must have §200,000 in the household funds
For a more extended game, you can set the goal to reach §1,000,000
The Farm Life Goals
Have 1 cow
Have 1 llama
Have one flock of wild birds and one wild rabbit home on your lot
Dogs and cats are great additions to farm life
Have at least one full chicken coop but only have one rooster. You can trade your extra roosters for anything besides simoleons
Have one of each “normal” plant (meaning, vegetables, fruits and herbs that are normal to humans - you can see the checklist on the printing version). You can have all the others if you want, but no money tree. There’s no such thing in real life, and since I can’t get one in my real-life garden, none of you can in the game!
Earn, at least once, the first prize in each fair category
Have one jam/conserve of each type displayed
You can sell your extra jams/conserves and wools at the market stalls or on your own selling table
If taking up the cross-stitching hobby, first display one of each design on a wall in your home, as you’re very proud of your work. Once your ‘hobby wall’ is finished, you can then create pieces to sell
You can’t craft items, unless you have the necessary coloured wool. All the wool must come from your llama
You can order groceries, but only the ingredients you can’t produce yourself. For example, meat and sugar can be ordered via the grocery delivery option. We want to have our animals as friends, so they can produce the goodies we need
Befriend Agnes Crumplebottom. Good luck with that!
Tumblr media
Thanks for playing the challenge!!!

Podcasting "Tech Monopolies and the Insufficient Necessity of Interoperability"
Tumblr media
This week on my podcast, I read my latest Locus Magazine column, “Tech Monopolies and the Insufficient Necessity of Interoperability.” It presents a theory of change to get us to a world of aggressive, trans-industry, global trustbusting.
https://locusmag.com/2021/07/cory-doctorow-tech-monopolies-and-the-insufficient-necessity-of-interoperability/
Most industries are monopolized. Whether we’re talking about athletic shoes or pharmacy benefit managers, the path to monopolization is the same: companies buy up small competitors, merge with major ones, and use their investors’ cash to subsidize anticompetitive attacks.
The reason they’re able to get away with it is that for 40 years, the world’s been in the grip of a dangerous economic delusion: that the only basis for fighting monopolies is “consumer welfare.” That is, monopolies should only be considered harmful if they make prices go up.
The “consumer welfare” standard originated with the far-right economics cult of the University of Chicago and was launched by Ronald Reagan, and has been supported by every president since (until Biden, whose EO from last week explicitly rejects it).
https://pluralistic.net/2021/07/10/unnixing-the-fix/#r2r-plus-plus
Reagan had incipient dementia (and was thick as pigshit even in his prime), but consumer welfare’s boosters understood its consequences: by focusing solely on what monopolies did to us as “consumers,” we’d remove from consideration how monopoles acted on us as citizens.
“Consumer welfare” was a recipe for concentrating corporate power so that it could overwhelm regulators, lawmakers and judges, creating a kind of pluocratic planned economy where how we live and work is decided in unaccountable board-rooms, not public legislatures.
Lawmakers were complicit in this power-grab while it benefited them — while the campaign contributions offset the voter alienation that followed from every corporate sellout — but today, it seems, a critical mass of lawmakers have had enough.
The 26-hour markup session for House Democrats’ six landmark antitrust bills saw every kind of lawmaker speak out against tech monopolies — from far-right clowns like Matt Gaetz to “squad” member Pramila Jayapal, and every kind of “moderate” in between.
Lawmakers are, for once, ahead of the electorate. Lots of voters are furious about some kind of monopoly — tech, health insurance, cable, beer, finance, meat packing — but precious few who understand that the problem isn’t with one industry, it’s with monopoly itself.
To create the momentum we’ll need for global, cross-industry trustbusting, we have to create and build momentum for the movement. I think we should start with tech.
Even though few people have fixing tech at the top of their agenda, nobody likes the tech industry.
What’s more, though tech companies monopolized the same way that, say pro wrestling did (spending their way to the top, buying out or crushing all rivals), tech has particular, specific characteristics that make it easier to pry apart again.
You’ve probably heard that tech is monopolized because of “network effects.” That’s econ jargon for a product or service that gets more valuable as more people use it. You join Facebook because your friends are there. Once you’re on FB, others join because you’re there.
But while network effects explain why tech gets big, they’re not why tech stays big. For that, you need to look at the neglected economics concept of “switching costs” — the things you give up when you stop using a product or service.
Facebook and other Big Tech companies do everything they can to raise switching costs. When you quit FB, you lose access to the friends, communities and customers who stay behind. There’s no technical reason this has to happen.
You can switch cell carriers without losing the ability to call your friends, after all. The high cost of leaving FB was deliberately created by the company, which has used expensive lawsuits and technological countermeasures to block every attempt to interoperate with it.
But if we used the law to guarantee interop, to force FB to connect to other, non-monopolistic services (say, ones run by co-ops, nonprofits or startups) then FB’s billions of users wouldn’t be a reason to join FB, they’d be a reason to leave it.
If we passed the ACCESS Act — which imposes a duty on Facebook to interoperate with rivals that promise not to mine or commercialize data — then leaving FB would give you all the benefits of FB (community and friends), with none of the privacy costs.
https://pluralistic.net/2021/06/22/vapescreen/#improve-access
And if we safeguarded Competitive Compatibility — the right to interoperate without permission, we’d future-proof the ACCESS Act, by securing the right to mod FB to protect security, add accessibility, and add other forms of interop.
https://www.eff.org/deeplinks/2019/10/adversarial-interoperability
Fixing industry — including and especially tech — requires action from the public sector. We can’t make monopolies better by acting as “consumers” — we have to act as citizens.
You won’t fix Surveillance Capitalism by buying Apple products.
https://onezero.medium.com/how-to-destroy-surveillance-capitalism-8135e6744d59
For all the noise that tech companies make about their rivalries — Google vs Facebook, Apple vs Google — at bottom, they differences are as meaningless as the flavors of “marshmellows” in a box of Lucky Charms.
Apple and Google are effectively a combine — for years, Google’s Eric Schmidt sat on Apple’s board. Apple’s biggest single customer is Google. And Apple and Google had no problem illegally colluding to suppress wages with “no poach” agreements.
https://knowledge.wharton.upenn.edu/article/silicon-valleys-poaching-case-growing-debate-employee-mobility/
Same goes for Google-Facebook’s rivalry. For two companies that are supposed to be as different as night and day, there are a fuckton of personnel who have moved from one to the other — all the way up to Sheryl Sandberg, the one-time Google VP who’s now Facebook’s COO.
In his dissent to Citizens United, Justice Stevens wrote that corporate free speech was bullshit because “corporations have no consciences, no beliefs, no feelings, no thoughts, no desires.”
Companies want us to believe they have “values,” but these are just marketing crap.
That’s why monopoly is so easy. Back when the DoJ killed AT&T and T-Mobile’s merger, John Legere took charge of T-Mobile’s and declared himself the “un-CEO,” growing out his hair and donning a t-shirt and emphasizing that he was nothing like his rivals.
But Legere was an ex-AT&T exec. T-Mobile’s differences from the other carriers — its claim to be an “un-carrier” were as superficial as those Lucky Charm marshmellow flavors.
That’s why Legere was able to merge T-Mobile with Sprint, pocket $135m and retire.
If corporations really had character and personality, if corporate rivalries really meant anything, then we wouldn’t have waves and waves of mergers.
I mean, either Disney and Fox were completely at odds with one another and Rupert Murdoch and Bob Iger were Romeo and Juliet, whose desperate, burning love for one another united their two great houses, or…
…It was all bullshit.
To the extent that corporations have “character” and “value,” these boil down to one thing:
Class solidarity among monopolists.
Which is why boycotts or other purchase decisions are not going to solve the monopoly problem. You’re not a consumer, an ambulatory wallet who votes by buying or not buying. You’re a citizen, who can and must demand action from your state on your behalf.
Corporate capture isn’t inevitable. It’s the result of monopoly — of massive profits and concentrated decision-making power following from boiling an industry down to a few companies.
We can have a responsive government, but only while it is more powerful than companies.
We need to bust every trust, but we have to start somewhere. Tech is uniquely suited to being that starting point, both because of the role interop can play in shattering tech’s power, and because tech is the infrastructure for a mass movement to change every industry.

25/f/str8. Trying to save my relationship w my bf (4.5 yrs) after catching him msging girls on tinder over the last 2 month. We have unpacked a lot of the reasons behind it. It was never to cheat/actually meet up. It was for excitement, feeling wanted, feeling he couldnt communicate w me. Im toying with the idea of a tinder that we would both look at..but it might be a slippery slope..i just want something we can do TG..r2r any ideas? has anyone else done something like this? or is this insane
nothing is going to take back the feeling that your partner was deceitful and looked outside of the relationship for comfort before coming to you. If you are going to loosen the reigns, then transparency and maturity are a must. You can’t lurk these girls after and compare yourself to them and he will have to be open to 100% allowing you access to any chats he may be having. like every relationship and thing it often takes a lot of trial and error to get a rhythm down of what you both find comfortable but it also takes a solid commitment of engery and time to invest.. and no one can know how much of that you’ve got to spend.

2021 was a weird year for me. It definitely wasn't nearly as hard as 2020 and there was nothing like what I went through in 2019 to deal with but there was still hardships. Good times too and good things happened.
Health wise I feel like a new man after everything I went through. I do wish I had kept working out and lifting regularly. One of my goals for the new year is to get back at that. Gotta preserve what I still have.
Family life is solid as always. Tyler graduated, started college and then moved into my Grams place here on the Homestead just this month. Glad to have all of us together again. Dad struggled physically this year but he is so strong and has overcome so much. Im glad I am here for him even if I feel I dont do enough. Mom just keeps being Mom, same with Joey.
Personally I am glad for the small circle of friends and family that i have. We all have our moments but in the end we are always here for each other. I did spend a few months talking to someone I met in a online group but it wasn't meant to be. I honestly feel okay being alone most of the time and it's going to take somebody very special to break me out of this. Never shutting that door but I'm also not looking out lol.
Sadly I lost Kaleb in July. His sudden passing hit me harder than I thought it would. He was such a lovable cuddly little guy and I really do miss him. Of course it helps that Whisperer has become my friend. The universe provided me the means to fill that hole.
Things here on the Homestead was good. We added 5 chickens to the flock. After the bear attacks in the spring it was nice to have some positive developments. My gardens didn't do as good this year but nothing horrible. Tried some new things on the property, some worked out some did not.
Of course my biggest struggle of the year was the electric issues that started in April. Learning to deal with these has been...... interesting.
Wrestling was good even with some set backs. I got to expand my ring announcing duties and worked in front of a huge crowd in Horseheads. I announced for R2R, NTW, ECPW, WAW and Slobberknocker. Looking to add more in 2022. I kinda moved away from commentary and only do it part-time now when needed or when I get the itch. Jolly became my voice in a lot of ways and gives me the time to work with the rest of the production team. I'm constantly learning and expanding what we can do. I'm pretty confident that 2022 is going to be exciting Wrestling wise!
My resale business has been steady but mostly online still. We did manage to return to some festivals and had a couple yard sales and the such which was nice after not having any last year. Definitely looking forward to ramping it up come warmer weather.
One huge thing for me was joining JSTM and helping with our community events. I had been wanting to do it for years but just to never done that jump until my BROTHER!!!!!!! pulled me in. It feels good to give back by volunteering and I'm learning a lot of things. I usually take a leadership role so it's been nice to kind of stand back and learn. Looking forward to a lot of awesome events we have planned next year.
I continued my master gardener studies this year. I'm slowly working my way through the curriculum and actually earned my first credit at PSU back in August. I don't know where all this is going and if I'm wasting my time but I'm learning things and it feels good to be moving forward.
I guess that's pretty much it for this year in review post. I didn't mean for it to be this long and rambling but then again I should have known because it's me writing it. If you got all the way to the end I thank you for reading it and I thank you for being a part of my life and listening to my stories. I hope if nothing else I provide you with a little bit of entertainment lol.
Lets go get 2022!

Here's the first gen of my Rags to Riches Legacy: Aspen Knight
Tumblr media
I flipped a coin to determine what gender she'd be, then I used James Turner's (a.k.a. The Sim Supply) Sims 4 Random Trait Generator (since randomize hasn't come to consoles yet). The only things I didn't randomize is her aspiration (since this is Rags to Riches I wanted to go with the Fabulously Wealthy aspiration), her clothing, which I changed to look less fancy, and her last name because I guess I just wanted her last name to be Knight for whatever reason. I'm not playing by any officially set rules, other than the loosely interpreted set of rules that James himself sort of set in his own R2R LPs since those are the only ones I've watched. Basically
No crashing at another sim's house.
No plopping down objects in community lots to gain skills or solve needs for free (if they already exist on the lot that's okay though)
No money cheats after the initial zeroing out of their funds (lol duh)
No mood lamps to influence moodlets (which I don't have access to anyway)
Basically nothing that feels like it's cheating.
I'll eventually have her start a family to continue the legacy, but only after she's living comfortably and after she's achieved her aspiration and has started recieving payouts from the aspiration reward trait. I'l probably also set a guideline on her house (e.g. "Three bedrooms, two bath minimum") and who she ultimately ends up with (I know I want her to end up with a random townie, not one of the "known" Sims 4 townies.)
I think she'll own a cafe though.
Since I put the main "legacy" save on hold for now until Island Living comes out, and I enabled cheats on this second save, I think I might try for a Rags to Riches challenge just because it seems fun... but who to be and what should my ultimate goal be? I think I might go for a retail shop since I haven't actually played with any of that part yet.

Financial Process Automation
Financial Process Automation Can Save Your Department by Kicking Out Chaos
Accounting and financial process management are arguably two of the toughest professional areas in terms of job pressure and work-related stress. Keeping up with the ever-flowing stream of data and numbers leaves even the best accountants tired and dreary. Why?
Because managing the daily flow of expenses across an organization requires a lot of know-how, mental ability, pressure-handling capabilities, and commitment to 13- or 14-hour days on a regular basis.
Bookkeeping and other financial responsibilities today involve much more than complicated math; accountants need to stay on top of changing international financial standards, floating exchange rates, multiple spreadsheets controlled by multiple stakeholders, as well as strategic executive decisions that need to be made instantly.
Cloud financial management is the answer, and organizations across the world are realizing the need to automate financial process management.
What is finance automation?
Finance process automation is the use of software to automate key finance-related tasks like accounts reconciliation, journal entries, and preparing financial statements with minimal human intervention. It enables finance departments to streamline processes and ensure that everything runs as smoothly as possible.
Finance process automation can have multiple effects.
Financial forms can be pre-populated with standard information pulled from a common database like a vendor list.
Data transfers and other mundane work can be set up with system integrations.
Finance business processes can be routed automatically instead of being reliant on someone remembering the next person it is supposed to go to.
Finance automation helps free up finance department executives to make key strategic decisions that require human experience, intuition, and decision-making abilities.
Finance process improvements have been known to improve accuracy. Considering that two-thirds of 751 accounting professionals (according to this survey) rely on error-prone spreadsheets, it’s time to automate financial processes.
How does finance automation help you?
Finance process mapping eliminates clunky procedures and does most of the heavy-lifting for you.
Here are a few benefits that finance process automation brings:
1. Data Integrity
You may have an awesome finance team in place, but they are reliant on a lot of things beyond their control. Minor mistakes, difficult suppliers, and changing policies make it hard to maintain accurate information. When your data in forms is automated, you can be confident there are no manual errors and you have the correct numbers.
2. Improved Efficiency
Moving from manual processes to automation can help the finance team to smoothen all existing functions. Anything that slows you down is replaced by a reliable and automatic process.
3. Speedy Approvals
Whether it’s a budget approval or a reimbursement claim, having an automatic approval system set up will help you save as much as eight hours a work week. As an added advantage, you can also eliminate unwieldy email threads checking on the status of every request.
4. 360-Degree Visibility
When all your systems are connected, you get a complete picture of your financials. You can understand the logic behind your fluctuating financials which will help you make faster and smarter business decisions.
Kissflow Finance Cloud
How to automate your financial processes
There is a list of finance processes in your organization that can be automated. Before you switch to finance process automation, there are a few things you need to take care of:
1. Standardize Your Financial Processes
Before you look at automating your processes on a digital platform, sketch out the workflow and form on a whiteboard. You’ll be able to see where you need to make changes and streamline tasks. It’s also important to talk to stakeholders to get their perspective on what needs to change to make the process better.
Once you’ve outlined what your process needs, you can evaluate finance management tools that will help you create a digital version of the finance processes you want to automate.
2. Create a Digital Form and Workflow
Build the perfect form to capture all the important information you need. You can customize it to make it even more useful for your team. Then, create the finance workflow, keeping in mind conditional tasks, sequencing, and how to dynamically assign people to different tasks.
finance process flow
3. Integrate With Other Software
Once you’ve automated the different financial processes, you need to ensure that your systems are communicating and sharing information with each other. Select tools that can be easily integrated; sometimes a third-party application, like Zapier, can help you with connecting these different tools.
Why the traditional approach isn’t working
Outside of automation in finance, operations are usually run following the R2R model, a process that covers tasks from Record to Report. With traditional accounting systems, tasks like balance sheets are a pain to execute to perfection. Each line represents hundreds or thousands of transactions, which are recorded manually on spreadsheets by harried executives.
What’s more, the bulk of this gets done towards the end of each month, making it a massive workload with very, very tight deadlines.
The end results are prone to the sloppiness of manual error, misfiled reports, and calculations going haywire because someone made a basic mistake on the monthly expenses spreadsheet.
So, what is the role of automation in Finance and Accounting?
Finance automation doesn’t mean having to hire robots in place of accountancy graduates! This exaggerated example is actually a big misconception that finance automation is somehow a threat to jobs. In fact, automation serves as an auxiliary solution, helping bring efficiency and productivity into an existing financial system.
In addition, finance approvals can use a number of insights into decision-making. For example, insurance companies can incorporate details like credit scores and loan history to decide how risky a particular client is, and make automated payout decisions.

Bossfight: Allstate Insurance enters the Right to Repair fight, loans its lobbyists to fight Apple
Tumblr media
The Right to Repair movement got state legislatures to consider more than a dozen Right to Repair bills last year, and have made great strides in the EU and elsewhere, but for every two steps forward they manage, they're forced a step or two back by giant corporate lobbyists, led by Apple, who want to ensure that third parties can't repair products, and that a manufacturer's decision it's time to retire a product from the market won't be challenged by independent repair depots.
Repair is a huge industry -- depending on how you measure it, it's between 1-4% of US GDP. And most of that business is done by mom-and-pop shops and medium-sized service depots.
That diffused market means that repair dollars stay in their communities, rather than being stashed overseas by tax-dodgers like Apple. But it also means that the companies who lose when Right to Repair is defeated have to overcome a lot of coordination costs to push back effectively.
All that is about to change: Allstate, a giant insurance company, has just acquired Icracked, a large phone repair chain (Allstate made the acquisition through its Squaretrade subsidiary, which offers third-party warranties on a variety of products).
Allstate has pledged to use its might to fight for Right to Repair, loaning R2R activists its state lobbyists to help see bills through.

Note: This list is a personal list made by the author, and is not a paid post. This does not represent a list vouched for by MUNI in its entirety, and there are many other brands that could also fall within this list but just did not make it to the author’s cut at this time.
Christmas seasons usually ushers in chaos, confusion, even more horrendous traffic and panic-buying for those of us who cannot escape the tradition / social norm of gift-giving.
As a result, most people usually wind up giving and receiving more Christmas sweets than we can consume without getting diabetes (also usually painfully over-packaged in layers of foil and cellophane), every kind of hand soap (in various plastic containers), and oftentimes, random other products we don’t really know what to do with and can’t figure out how to politely dispose of (therefore a waste of resources in production and transport, and a pending landfill problem).
While I feel we should spend more time and resources on creating special memories with loved ones vs. filling their lives with more stuff, we recognize that people WILL consume nonetheless. Fortunately, there are products / gift ideas that are actually useful and meaningful.
I’ve made a rundown of Zero Waste Gift Ideas for varying budgets, recipient personas (for the foodies, the style savvy, zero waste explorers, travelers, etc.), and recipient sensibilities to zero waste living (from not so savvy, to those ready take it to the next level).
Read all the way ’til the end for the best (and bonus) ideas, and zero waste factoids! 🙂
FOR THE FOODIE (so in the Philippines, basically everyone)
Filipinos love gathering over food, and in the world over, we’ve seen a lack of people congregating over a wholesome meal made fresh that celebrates locally sourced / real food items with minimal to no preservatives. In his book and documentary In Defense of Food (watchable on Netflix), writer Michael Pollan encourages us to “Eat real food. Not too much. Mostly plants”.
Here are just some gifts of health and sumptuous flavor that you can give your foodie friends, without any of the plastic packaging. (There are waaay too many glass bottle products for me to include in this list right now, so I only included the ones I love / are unique / am using right now.)
#1-3 Unique beverages and spirits from local makers
Bayani Brew Tea Concentrate with gift tag
Proudly Promdi Bugnay Wine
Proudly Promdi Tapuey Rice Wine
Tea concentrate from Bayani Brew (P180/500ml bottle of concentrate good for making 3 liters of tea; P165/500ml bottle for orders of 12 bottles and up) Happy that Bayani Brew’s teas are finally available in glass bottles! Available in lemongrass pandan and sweet potato leaf flavors, made with organically grown crops sourced directly from farmers at up to 5x above market prices from partner farming communities including Gawad Kalinga, brewed with traditional methods, and sweetened with premium raw brown sugar. * Order via www.shopee.com/bayanibrew or their Facebook page, or email to [email protected]. Lemongrass pandan concentrate is also available via Blue Kitchen outlets in Rockwell, Uptown BGC, Shangri-la Plaza and Robinson’s Magnolia (call to confirm availability).
Tapuey rice wine from Proudly Promdi (P400/500ml bottle) Made from locally produced gluttonous rice, cooked, fermented and then stored in earthen jars for two to three months. It is a local drink used and served during rituals and special occasions, which you can drink over ice or mixed in other drinks.
Bugnay fruit wine from Proudly Promdi (P490/bottle) Bugnay is a tropical fruit and berry that contains anti-oxidants and is good for the heart. The wines are all-natural (no additives) and handmade by the winemaking tribes of Adams in Ilocos Norte. * Order via www.proudlypromdi.myshopify.com or their Facebook page, or email to [email protected]. Bottles are also stocked at Ritual in Makati and Roots in Katipunan (call to confirm availability).
#4-5 Zero Waste snack & sweets
Mana Bites Matcha Made in Heaven bars + cookies!
Baby Cafe Package-free Coconut Chips
Baby Cafe Coco Chips (P1.25/gram or P100/80 grams) For those you know who are nuts about coconuts, this is a great treat, available in unsweetened and coconut sugar-sweetened (crispier!) variants, you can opt to get as little or as much as you might like. They have them available in kraft pouches too, but for a truly zero waste gift, I’d recommend repacking them into another airtight container your recipient can reuse, and that would be part of your gift too! * Order via Baby Cafe’s Instagram or Facebook page, or email to [email protected]
Mana Bites snack subscription (P300 and up) Taking from our recent MUNI Meetup on Zero Waste Ways in Business, Mana Bites offers a zero waste snack subscription where they rotate 2 containers to you or your chosen recipient for P200, then you can subscribe for any number of sweets over your chosen duration! Apart from being zero waste, Mana Bites uses healthy, wholesome ingredients, rich in fiber, and sweeten their treats without using refined sugar, and opting for more wholesome alternatives like coconut sugar. * Order via Mana Bites’ Instagram or Facebook page, or email to [email protected]
#6 A regular delivery of fresh, organic veggies
Gulay Pambahay from Good Food Community
Salad veggies from Good Food Community
Good Food Community veggie subscription (P300 for 1-week delivery or P1,050 for 4-week delivery of Salad Pack subscription – a half-kilo mix of salad greens and other veggies that can be eaten raw; or P580 for 1-week delivery or P2,170 for 4-week delivery of Bayong Pambahay subscription – 3.5kgs of seasonal 9-12 hearty and leafy veggies) Truly a gift of health to your recipient, and security to Good Food’s partner farmers in Tarlac! Just check that your recipient is someone looking to live healthier by making his / her own food from scratch and is looking for healthier, organic, fair trade veggies to make sure food doesn’t go to waste. 🙂 * Order via www.good-food-coop.myshopify.com or email [email protected].
FOR THE STYLE SAVVY
Piling textile waste is a growing problem in the fashion industry today, and while arguably, the best way to combat this is by curbing consumption and choosing pre-loved items, there are makers that are more mindful about their use of textiles, sourcing scraps instead of always using virgin material, making designs that last, and practicing fair labor practices.
These gift ideas would be great for your fashion-forward trendsetter friends who can help make sustainable fashion a style standard and not just a trend.
#7-8 Practical everyday items made with scrap fabric
R2R Travel wallet
R2R Laptop Sleeve
R2R’s Matt travel wallet with wristlet (P1,049) and Charlie laptop sleeve (P1,749) are made with the signature R2R weave and are practical items for people to use. The laptop sleeve also comes with an indigenous textile flap, handwoven by talented artisan communities in the Philippines. It fastens with an adjustable belt, allowing it to hold a laptop as small as 11-inches or more heavy-duty like a 13″ Macbook. * Order via www.thingsthatmatter.ph – R2R’s new e-commerce baby, which houses other meaningful, homegrown brands and gift ideas too.
#9 A completely upcycled, statement zero waste top
Anthill Fabric Gallery’s Pamana zero waste top (P3499 and P3799) Another brand featured at our recent MUNI Meetup on Zero Waste Ways in Business, Anthill produced this blouse with a 100% zero waste pattern – no end cuts, no remnant fabrics. It is handwoven from 100% waste or discarded fabrics from local designers and garment manufacturing in Cebu, cut into strips by partner social enterprise PTI International, and upcycled and handwoven into this fabric by a partner Argao Weaving Community. * Order via www.facebook.com/AnthillFabricGallery or via email to [email protected].
FOR ZERO WASTE EXPLORERS
One way to get folks into zero waste habits is by showing them alternatives and letting them try it! Sometimes, all we need to do is find out where certain things are available, and be guided into the process by a supportive friend. 🙂
There are different options here for friends in different parts of their Zero Waste journey, so make sure you give them a gift for the appropriate leg of their journey so that you’re sure it won’t be an item that just lies around idle and not in use, otherwise, that would be a bigger waste!
#10-11 Zero Waste dental hygiene
Bamboo toothbrushes by GoZero (P75) Prior to this option, bamboo toothbrushes were a lot more expensive, and for people to shift the habit from plastic to bamboo, price was a major factor. (Did you know that in the US alone, 850 million to 1 billion toothbrushes go to landfills annually?) GoZero has now made this a less elitist lifestyle choice. Pair it with your own toothpaste made with baking soda, just enough virgin coconut oil to make it into a paste, and a few drops of food grade peppermint essential oil (or check out the next item on this list). * Order via www.facebook.com/GoZeroPH.
Remineralizing Tooth Powder (P150/110 grams) and Black Toothpaste (P150/190 grams) by Zero Basics Toothpaste tubes are insidious and unnecessary when there are options like a simple recipe (in bamboo toothbrush blurb) and alternatives like these by Zero Basics. These are probably for the more zero waste savvy friends of yours, especially since the black toothpaste made with activated charcoal may be intimidating. 🙂 * Order via Zero Basics’ Facebook or Instagram, and check out the 3-in-1 face mask too (I’ve tried it myself!).
#12-13 Liquid hand soap and plastic-free, toxin-free home cleaning products
Lemongrass liquid soap by Ritual (P170/350ml signature Ritual gin bottle – same container as the Citronella dish liquid in above photo, P210 with canvas pouch & card; P230/700ml bottle, P280 with canvas pouch & card) A great entry-level gift that’s also generic enough and functional for everyone, minus the typical plastic bottle container. This mild, all-natural liquid soap is 100% biodegradable and made with coconut-based cleansers and pure organic lemongrass essential oil. May be used as a hand or body wash.
Green cleaning box set by Ritual (P900/box set containing Citronella Dish Liquid (700ml), Citronella or Lemongrass Enzyme Deodorizer (350ml Spray), 2 segments of Victoria Herbal Laundry Bar, 500g of borax, 500g of baking soda, 2 packs of laundry starch, and 1 coconut fiber scrubber) Another hyper-practical gift for young (or progressive) eco-moms, dads, and basically anyone who has their own space! Check out these other green home cleaning tips from Ritual’s Bea Misa Crisostomo at our recent MUNI Meetup on Zero Waste Ways at Home. * Order via www.ritualph.myshopify.com or the specific product links above.
#14 Reusable beeswax wraps
NatuWrap Beeswax food wraps by Milea All Organics (P395/set of 3 – 1 6.5″x6.5″, 1 10″x10″, and 1 14″x14″ wrap) Plastic wrap / seran wrap / cling wrap is one of my pet peeves, and is unsustainable, single-use, petroleum-based, and insidious af. Because it’s so thin, it deceivingly feels like it’s “not wasteful”! Not all beeswax wraps are made equal, and this one right here is made with beeswax and tree resin harvested straight from their organic farm, and muslin fabric vs. colorful, printed fabrics that may likely have polyester or other mixes that may make them non-biodegradable (which some sellers claim). Ask about the textile too when buying your beeswax wraps. 🙂 * Order via www.milea.ph or catch them at Legazpi Sunday Market.
#15-16 Zero waste feminine hygiene For gift recipients you know have been considering it, but haven’t taken the leap just yet! Disposable sanitary napkins, like diapers last 100-200 years, and one of the unfortunately popular items that are collected from cleanup dives or coastal cleanups. Plastic tampon applicators don’t help either. Here are some possible alternatives:
Reusable cloth napkins from Ka Nami Cloth Pads
Menstrual cups from Sinaya Cup
Reusable cloth pads by Ka Nami Cloth Pads (P120/pad) Haven’t used these myself, but Angel of Ka Nami swears they’re absorbent! They’re also a fraction of the price I bought my Charlie Banana cloth pads years ago at P900 for a box of 3. It takes a certain level of commitment to wash the pads though, so make sure your recipient is open to it. It’s a great first step before moving them onto the next, more zero waste option. * Order via Ka Nami’s Facebook, or their partner Hamsa Earth-conscious Collections. They’re based in Bacolod, in case that’s relevant to you. 🙂
Menstrual cups by Sinaya Cup (P1,199/cup) Yes, I’ve had mine for nearly two years, but I still alternate this with cloth pads. 😀 Nonetheless, it’s a great option for active days when I go swimming or diving, or am traveling and washing cloth pads is out of the question. This requires a certain level of commitment from the recipient though, and I won’t deny that it takes getting used to. Ultimately, once you get used to it, it’s a more convenient, zero waste option than the cloth pads as it also requires less water and soap to clean! * Order via www.sinayacup.com, Sinaya Cup’s Facebook or [email protected].
FOR TRAVELERS, LEARNERS & DOERS
In my mind, nothing beats the gift of experience and shared memories. ❤ Naturally, there are many more experiences that could have made this list, but, Here are just a few ideas from things I’ve tried myself and would love to do again and again!
#17-19 Travel Experiences
Skin-diving Day Trip with Reef Nomads (P3,000/person inclusive of guide and lessons, transpo, meals, sanctuary fees; +P300 for equipment rental) The Philippines is the center of the center of marine biodiversity, and it’s ironic that not more Filipinos take to the water! I believe that reconnecting people to nature and seeing both the beauty, and also the human-induced degradation of resources can compel people to take on more pro-environmental behavior. * Check out trip schedules via Reef Nomads’ Facebook page.
Overnight stay at Sonya’s Garden (P3,000/person on weekdays, P3,400/person on weekends, inclusive of 1 lunch or dinner, breakfast, and “art of doing nothing” activities including gardening and composting) Perfect for your mom, tita, tumitita friends, or partner. Fell in love with it when I first stayed over, and it’s a place I’d love to be able to regularly go to because of the serenity and warm, familial staff. Food is veg-friendly and organically grown on site, and you may request for certain food items according to your dietary preferences. When I’m here, I feel like a queen / haciendera of sorts, but of the just, wholesome, organic, fair trade kind, because of the community that Sonya’s Garden has been able to help. 🙂 * Book via www.sonyasgarden.com/bed-breakfast.
6D/5N Zero Waste-themed trip throughout Negros Occidental with MUNI (P21,500/person for applications sent by November 30, inclusive of activities like farm tours, snorkeling, a customized MUNI Meetup, etc., accommodations, meals, transportation, guide fees and zero waste essentials) Didn’t plan on including this in the list, but hey, might as well. 🙂 Naturally, this would be for a more special person in your life who you feel could use more than just a day trip, and could use the boost of inspiration + community support from MUNI and its partners in organic farming, marine conservation, sustainable tourism, and social enterprise. Here, travelers can learn about integrated, zero waste farming practices, the impact of plastics on our oceans, sustainable sourcing and production in business, and discover how they can contribute in their own way. * View trip details here, and e-mail inquiries to [email protected].
FOR THE DIY GIFT-GIVERS
#20-23 Labor of love ideas (yup, I guess I went past 20)
These are relatively simple, inexpensive, but some more time-intensive ideas that I’m just throwing out there, but you’ll have to put in the work / time for yourself. 😉
Cook a healthy meal (or plan a cookout) with your loved ones using plant-based, package-free food items Nothing says I love you, I care about your health, and “hey, it’s doable!” more than taking the time to make a meal from scratch. You can get organic produce from Good Food Community, cool salts from Ritual, and experiment with hearty veg stews or simple one-pot meals.
Make your own personal care products for them A simple recipe is the toothpaste one I mentioned above, but you can also make other personal care products like salves / balms or yoga mat sprays with kitchen ingredients like baking soda, virgin coconut oil, apple cider vinegar, and various essential oils. Avoid giving folks anything for their face or underarms if you’re new to the world of personal care DIY and are unsure of their skin’s reaction to those ingredients.
Plan a wholesome Netflix documentary binge with them Provided that they have open minds (because you don’t want to be forcing them to sit through these documentaries), check out In Defense of Food, Cooked, Chasing Coral, A Plastic Ocean, Mission Blue, and True Cost to name a few. Sometimes, people need the extra encouragement by having someone to watch these things with and become more mindful of the impact of mindless consumption on our own health and that of the planet. Couple it with wholesome snacks mentioned earlier in this list!
Take the time to hear them out and give long, warm hugs Sometimes the only thing our family and friends really need from us are undivided attention and an un-judgmental ear. 🙂
There are a lot more options that could be added to this list, but it’s a hefty list for now! What other options would you guys recommend? I’d love to know your ideas!

i need a R2R about something, thinking about getting a mirena IUD but lots of ppl online claim that it can cause HSV flare ups. As someone with HSV1 (3 years ago and it hasn't come back since the first outbreak) Im really scared that if i get this it will cause it to come back. Every doc/pharmacist Ive asked has no information on this, and cannot confirm anything for me. Has this happened to anyone? or has anyone with HSV1 got an IUD and had no issues?? thank u community
this actually happened to me
I had the cooper one placed in january and 4 days later my mouth, lips and throat were so covered in sores (i had never had a cold sore in my life) and I had a 104 fever. I took an uber to ER. No one ever mentioned it being an IUD thing to me until a reader actually wrote in about her issues. HSV2 flare ups are also equally as intense, even for those who have never shown a syptom, and they are reoccurring. I havent seen a cold sore since, and I hope I never do.
IUDs also have a high chance of causing ovarian cysts. I had mine removed 2 months later in the ER because of those. The ER doctors were surprised when I DIDNT know that was a common side effect. My stomach was so distended i was bigger than I was at 7 months pregnant. They rushed me past a 1.5 hour ER wait line it was so shocking looking.
IUDs work for a small percentage of people but i truly feel like they are too new of a “thing” to be faithfully considered.
Im in a mom’s group and there are 250 members and 11 of them had IUDs when they got pregnant.
