I want to make a longer post about this but to me, just as interesting as the ecological destruction of The Silmarillion is the renewal and growth.
Dorthonion is devastated by fires, its forests overgrown and dark. The grasses of Ard Galen and Lothlann are burnt, dust choking the skies, heat scorching a mild climate, birds and other animals fleeing which in turn effects other ecosystems. Then there is the destruction of the region of Nargothrond by Glaurung; entire rivers poisoned, livestock killed, forests trampled.
Glaurung as a singular monster can inflict the damage of an entire war itself*
But there is also survival and restoration. Green breaks out across Tol Sirion again. Even in the devastating aftermath of the Nírnaeth, grass grows over rusted swords and broken bodies.
Mentally drawing a connection between the restoring of Tol Sirion to green and alive after the death of Finrod and the grass that grows only after the Haudh en Nírnaeth amid the desecration of Ard Galen; not only does this cover the bodies of the warriors but besides it lies Rían, a survivor of the Bragollach which brought the destruction that turned Ard Galen into some place desolate
*the parallels between the interpersonal damage he inflicts and the ecological damage is a really interesting one that I will make yet another post on

For @celebrimbor-apologist. Their fics about this trio (plus Elrond) have been giving me life the last few weeks and have inspired me to draw them. I am so attached to Camnir (and more recently Vorohil), even though it’s going against every single ounce of self preservation in my entire body.
This last episode doesn’t exist. They’re laughing, they’re happy. Everything is fine.
It’s fine.

Don’t know if anyone else has pointed this out, but 7 different women in Tolkien’s legendarium died of grief for the men they loved: Lúthien, Glóredhel, Rían, and Arwen explicitly, and Andreth, Nimrodel, and Théodwyn by implication.
Also, though she didn’t die, Melian abandoned Middle-earth when Doriath needed her most, out of grief for Thingol. And though it is not explicitly grief, Mithrellas abandoned her family as well.
Not sure if that’s romantic or sexist of good old Tolkien.
I’ve praised his well-written strong female characters, and I still do and always will … but I admit this particular aspect feels problematic.
Lúthien is an exception, of course, as she went to the Halls of Mandos with the intent of saving Beren, rather than actually giving up. (And she’s always a badass in everything she does, dead or alive.) Also Andreth was old anyway when Aegnor died, so her passing could’ve easily been the effects of old age worsened by grief.
But this isn’t the case for any of the other aforementioned women. They each give up on their entire lives because of the absence of one man. This wouldn’t feel so problematic if it also happened to male characters as a result of romantic love. But the only male character who died of grief is Brego, who was mourning his son, not a lover. Perhaps Daeron may have died from his pain over Lúthien, but this is never explicitly written.
Idk … does anyone else have thoughts about this?

Her love was given to trees and to the flowers of the wild, and she was a singer and maker of songs
I haven’t been doing very well lately so I’ve just been doing some of my favorite board topics. I did Morwen last week so here is a Rían board. She’s one of my favorite characters to do boards for because the gratuitous nature imagery is based in canon
I know I’ve done an Aerin board more recently but I’ll probably do her next though as always please feel free to request

No spoilers, just a character appreciation post. But what a legend. This character, Rían, had one of the most metal scenes in the whole Rings of Power show.
Love her.
Episode 7 was jam-packed with amazing fightscenes, but this moment was one of my favorites.

More Fic!
“If you get hurt, stay down” he says in the most serious tone he has ever heard him have, “And if you get lost-” “I am not going to-” “-you stay put. I am aware that you know these woods like no other, but if you get lost, then something is wrong. Do not engage. Wait for us to come to you. Understood?” “Yes” he places his own hand over Vorohil’s, “I understood” “And if you get hurt – if you get stabbed, pierced, bruised-” He swallows down the nausea that idea brings, “Relax” Camnir's really not good, horrible, awful excursion towards Eregion.
