Bakugo, stomping towards Midoriya: YOU! You thought you could beat me?!No!

*Bakugo lets off an enormous explosion at Midoriya, which cause him to fly back and everyone around them to scatter*

Bakugo: You think you have some worth in and of yourself? No! You're an abomination!

*Bakugo rushes towards Midoriya and begins to beat him while he’s trying to get back up*

Bakugo: You’re nothing more than a pebble on my path! You little quirkless freak! How dare you think you are more, DEKU!

*Midoryia is finally able to free himself from Bakugos assault by pulling out his stun blaster and blasting Bakugo at point blank range. Bakugo is sent flying away from Midoriya. As Bakugo try’s to recover form the attack, he sees that the green haired boy is now standing and aiming the blaster right at him*

Midorya: My name is IZUKU MIDORIYA! AND I WILL BE THE FIRST QUIRKLESS HERO!!!

*Bakugo roars at him and launches himself at Midoriya, but he is intercepted by a close line from Kirishima. As Bakugo goes tumbling, he is then hit from the left by a recipro burst from Iida which sends him flying towards Todoroki, who then puts up an ice wall that Bakugo then collides with. Bakugo try’s to recover again, but he’s then kicked in the chest by Tsu, which sends him crashing straight through the ice wall. Finally, he’s then touched by Uraraka, who uses her quirk to effortlessly lift him up by the ankle and slams him down onto the ground. Disoriented, Bakugo opens his eyes to see all of class 1-A prepared to attack him if he decided to try anything. Bakugo proceeds to pass out from his injuries and class 1-A then drops their guard now that the deranged sociopath is out of commission*

Ask Game: All Might is brought out of retirement to help training Midoriya Izuku, the Quirkless student of the Ninth Holder of One for All, Miruko. After all, they only have ten months to bulk him up enough to pass the Entrance Exam...

The attack that crippled All Might landed differently in this AU. It damaged his organs, yes, but not as much as it did in canon. This is because most of the attack took All Might's left arm. With a time limit and down an arm, All Might decided that with AFO dead, it was probably time to retire. Can't really keep up the "Perfect Undaunted Hero" charade with such visible evidence of mortality, especially when no prosthetic would be able to handle One For All.

All Might needed someone to take OFA as soon as possible if he was retiring, and remembered a certain spitfire who was invaluable during a situation not too long ago. I am of course referring to Tiger Bunny at the Underground Masquerade. Miruko, being offered the power to kick harder with zero obligations was immediately onboard. Also it made her fluffy and she loves that.

Now, Miruko wasn't actually super interested in being a new Symbol of Peace and with AFO probably definitely dead, she doesn't have much legacy to uphold either. So when she encounters Midoriya trying to stab a sludge villain in self-defense, she decides that he can have the Quirk.

Midoriya has been trying for at least some physical training following All Might losing an arm, but as a Quirkless kid in Aldera, that's... hard to do. Miruko is also not an expert in that kind of thing, so she calls up someone she knows who is. Yagi Toshinori.

Ten months later, Midoriya is ready to receive One For All from Miruko. Everyone is super excited. And then, during the written exam, Midoriya starts growing fur.

(In which I spiral down a rabbit hole with Midoriya that has little to do with @codenamesazanka 's original post that started this (x).  FYI I sorta separated Deku/Izuku to indicate Deku as the hero and Izuku as the person outside of heroics.)

I started thinking about this post again (see the link above) and how Deku doesn’t really understand that non-perfect or sanitized victims exist AND still need to be saved and not by destruction. (The "maybe killing someone does save them" thing is a great way to assuage guilt but it's a stupid copout.)  Deku (hero) and more importantly Izuku (person) doesn’t really understand that though because he WAS a “perfect” victim.  Midoriya stayed quiet and inconspicuous and didn’t make a fuss about the bullying or discrimination he faced, he just kept his head down and hoped that something would change without any real effort on his part.  And if he had died as a result from the bullying he would’ve been hailed as an unfortunate victim (of who? or what? Don’t worry - isn’t his death so tragic? oh well now on to our next news story -), so any critique of society and the individuals who reinforce the status quo don’t actually have to do anything.  I know there’s more nuance here and lot of cultural things happening with this all but I’m not gonna dig into that right now.

Moving on!  Quite frankly the boy didn’t live long enough to get out of his childish mindset and get some “righteous" anger at the wrongdoings and failings of society.  All Might came along when he was still starry eyed and hopeful to lift Midoriya out of the trajectory of his life and Izuku never had any time to get to the point where he comes to terms with the hurt caused society’s rejection of his self and get angry about it.  As such, he can’t understand the league.  It probably doesn’t even occur to him that he's missing that understanding because for him it worked out - he got the attention and support to be able to escape the circumstances of his birth/quirklessness and to leave the box (deku) that society shoved him in. Twice and Toga never had that support – they both lived how they needed to in order to survive in a world not meant for them until they broke down.  (Maybe that's why Vigilante Deku AUs were so popular back in the day - they speedran Midoriya past the hopeful kid stage and to a point where a lot of the fanbase was in their own lives - seeing the issues in the world and wanting to affect change.)

Izuku, for all that he claims to want to connect to the villains, hasn’t given enough thought or empathy to understand how continuing to live a life where you don’t fit in with society can be deeply hurtful as well as the emotional repercussions of having unchangeable parts about yourself be reviled.  This isn’t to say Izuku had it easy -  of course Izuku went through hardships but.... there’s a big difference between living through stuff as a kid and finding a way out of it vs living through that, growing up, maturing, and in turn looking critically at society.  But I can’t bring myself to fault Midoriya for those exact reasons because he's just a kid. He doesn’t have the perspective to see outside of himself – at least not for the villains.  Because that seems to be too far of a stretch for him?  But Todoroki was close enough to Izuku’s mindset for him to help back in the sports festival arc.  I also acknowledge that he's a teenager and IS capable of critical thinking, but from what we've seen, his schools have never actually made the students examine the world they live in - which is a different skill from quirk analysis or historical or literary analysis or the various writing exercises that students go through. 

(Believe me – you can have the brightest kid but, most of the time, unless you point out the shortcomings of their mindsets, it won’t occur to them to look further.  (Not necessarily assuming that they’re wrong, but rather that their consideration of life is not as expansive as it should be. Especially for a kid wanting to be the greatest hero and save everyone.)  For example: many abled bodied people don’t realize how inaccessible places can be until someone brings it up to them or they find themselves in that situation (like a temporary crutch or wheelchair).  It’s through no fault of the able bodied person that they weren’t aware enough to consider it in the first place, but what they do once they realize physical accessibility is an issue, is on them.)  Back to the point – hero society never calls attention to it’s own shortcomings despite the proof quite obviously existing and the people within society don’t seem to spare much thought either. The adults who have seen more of these instances are then of course more culpable in this than the kids who haven't.

So, Midoriya was also failed by society (cough all might cough) as well, but he chose the hero path - to save people. We see him starting to consider the deeper issues in his talk with Uraraka, and the few times he “tries” to talk to various villains shows that he is aware enough of underlying issues - which makes it his duty as a hero to do something about it.  In that way, he is at fault. He chose a profession to devote his life to that should require this of him.  And through his hero work, Midoriya has seen the problems in society and yet he’s chosen to turn away from them (and by problems/them I’m referring to the villains “too far gone to save” and the issues they represent). 

(Sorry Midoriya, but considering we’re nearing the end and you haven’t shown any growth in this area….. I am faulting you for metaphorically pushing your head in the sand.  I do want to be wrong though.  I really want the kid to prove me wrong.)

And he’s able to turn away from them guilt free, in part, because he’s gotten the proverbial thumbs up by his classmates that it’s ok and that they’ll just be better and be model minority heroes and that will fix the problem! Because they’re positive representation!  Or something?  If you can put your mind to it that will fix things! Just try harder! Again, very idealistic but they are kids, so it comes with the territory.  (Horikoshi didn’t have to make them unquestionably right in that approach though.  Toga and Uraraka coming together for the win! The Shoji and Spinner match up not so much.)

Overall, there’s something about how Deku still fit into society's boxes in an acceptable way and never truly faced what existing outside of "acceptability" was like.  Don’t get me wrong it’s tough to live in the mha world as a quirkless person and of course it has its problems and restrictions, but that’s still a box that society provides for, even if the society in question doesn’t like it. 

And I'm not saying that Izuku had to live through a terrible life to understand the villains!  Just that, he has the capacity to look outside himself and be empathetic, but the application of it is lacking, despite knowing there’s problems, despite having LIVED with some of those problems. Extrapolate, boy!!!! You don't need empathy to reach out to others but the whole compassionate/kind Midoriya thing has been touted since the beginning! So I want to see it!

(Not sure how much sense this will make to people, but there’s a maturity that comes about with either time or certain circumstances that can be hard to grasp unless you’ve lived through it.  And quite frankly, Midoriya hasn’t. He went from a perfect/acceptable victim to the top tier of society (heroes).)

(Basically: Midoriya never **matured in the restrictive environment he grew up in and can't emotionally connect with the league who did, because of that. Instead he seems to have internalized the "if they were better" or "if they were truly good" then there wouldn't be a problem because just look at his classmater!, so villains being villains is their own fault and no one else is culpable.)

**centers on the idea that someone starts off as hopeful in regards to their discriminated position in life and over time matures to understand how society supports that discrimination and come to terms with the hurt that it's caused them personally (and in this case to fight back against it)

AU where when Bakugou is trying to intimidate Midoriya in the first chapter by burning his shoulder, his control slips and he creates an explosion

1 - He didn't create an explosion, he accidentally and partly sets Izuku on fire because synthetic fabric of the jacket + heat + static electricity = WHOOSH! The only reason why Izuku isn't too injured is because he took his jacket off at a speed rivaling Ingenium's and their homeroom teacher, piece of shit he might be, knows how to use an extinguisher and immediately treats his burns before calling for an ambulance.

2 - The problem (for Aldera) is that when someone is admitted to the hospital in any quirk-related-incident, the hospital will ask questions. If a minor is involved, the police will be really interested in what happened. "Just two friends playing rough," the homeroom teacher explains. "What do you mean, your students are allowed to use their quirks outside of their homes?" the police officer answers. The smiles immediately disappears.

3 - Several things happen. The police officer discovers that the student in the hospital is quirkless, which means it wasn't teenagers rough playing but a teenager attacking someone who couldn't defend himself. Said officer is really concerned that the teacher doesn't seem worried about it.

4 - There is an investigation launched into Aldera because of the reckless quirk usage tolerated by the faculty. It helps that there are videos posted online of teenagers doing dumb stuff with their quirks while in class. The Local Education Authority has an absolute field day with the whole thing. And the incident is written in Bakugou's file.

5 - Now, here is the fun part. In this AU, Izuku didn't destroy the zero pointer so he didn't get enough point to qualify. Unbeknowst to him, he and the other candidates who got points where placed on a waiting list. Because after UA has its students selected, they have to examine each file to make sure they can truly qualify as hero students.

6 - Bakugou not having any rescue points raised a couple of eyebrows but he was going to pass, especially as he is the one with most points. Until UA saw what really looked like assault in his student's file. Add to that an altercation with Izuku in front of UA after the exam, and UA says "Nope!". So Bakugou is not admitted to the hero course. And Izuku, who was the first one on the waiting list, gets in there.

Shirakumo Oboro is reincarnated into one Toogata Mirio. Shirakumo Oboro died on July 15th (I think he died around this time but the timeline isn't that clear) and on the same day Toogata Mirio was born. Okay, but if I remember correctly Shirakumo was made to give Aizawa a friend like Mirio is to Amajiki. So, like it's literally perfect lol– ah! But the ages, he died 13/14 years ago and Mirio is like 18. Sooo???

Someone give Sero, our resident tape dispenser, OFA, so he can have Danger Spidey Sense. Ig there's Black Whip too, which would help with mobility. A bit like Spider-Man’s Iron Spider Armor/Suit. Sero would be living his little Spider-Man fanboy dream!

Oh, How The Tables Have Turned (and how you have turned on each other): This AU(?) is lots of world building fun. –because everyone heard quirkless and that's all they paid attention to. Also the Midoriya Tears are very much a reoccurring trait with various power levels. Obviously our Mido’s quirk is the strongest version yet bc MC privilege lmao. And no one knew bc he obviously never trained it. Why would he when he thinks he's quirkless? And it's just a ‘Midoriya thing’. ALSO plot armor lol

Villain Deku AUs have always confused me because like...did we watch the same show?? Midoriya's heroism is so strong that it allowed him to:

inherit One For All from All Might

pass the UA exam (with the help of his new quirk)

save not one, not two, but three children from deadly villains AND inspired them in different ways

and probably more that I'm forgetting.

I'm not saying that Villain Deku is a bad idea or anything, I really like the concept! I just find it weird how some people say things like "the timeline where Deku is a villain instead of a hero is not far from the canon one" because there's not a single ounce of villain-ness in canon Midoriya's body.

Another main problem that I have with most of these AUs is how they almost always paint All Might as the bad guy: "Oh, he's the one that caused Midoriya to spiral into villainy" and "If All Might had been nicer to him, he wouldn't have turned to villainy" are both sentiments that I've commonly seen before which again, confuses me.

Most of this hinges on the whole "you can't be a hero without a quirk" thing, which honestly? It makes sense to a certain extent. Remember, All Might was quirkless too. He knows how helpless quirkless people are in the world. Midoriya can train until he's on par with UA students without a quirk, sure, but that doesn't erase the social ostracisation that all quirkless people experience. The truth is that the public severely looks down on quirkless people, and that's not something that a single passionate middle school student can fix. Sure, Toshinori could've phrased himself better, but what he was trying to say isn't false; it is very difficult, maybe even impossible for quirkless people to become Pro Heroes given the current system.

Thanks for that answer and while I'm not fond of Toshi dying, I am curious about a canon divergence where he and AFO both go down in an act of mutual annihilation during their first battle (and AFO won't get recovered), if only for the consequences. If you're willing to do that one, I'd love to hear it, but if AM dying is a hard no, could you perhaps do an AU where AFO dies for real + consequences?

mmm, yes, how about some middle ground- AfO and All Might both die in the first fight, but Toshinori Yagi survives, barely.

1- Toshi drags AfO's corpse behind him as he goes to recon with Gran and Sir. One For All is fading, slipping out of his fingers, and he grips AfO tighter to try and hold it in. It doesn't prevent his strength from leaving, but it keeps AfO's body from being snatched. Sir is stunned and horrified by the sight, his trembling call of 'All Might?' ignored. Gran breaks through and takes the corpse from him only after he says in a voice more gentle than he's used in years that "It's done, Toshinori."

2- Gran leaves to take care of the body. Sir gets Toshinori to the hospital. He's in critical state for days. When he finally wakes up, the blood's been all washed off. He says that All For One is dead, and so is One For All. He meets Sir's eyes. "You looked?" He asks. Sir looks down. "Only to see if you'd wake up." Planning All Might's funeral, after all, would have required a lot of time. But Toshinori sighs, and says they'll still need that funeral, and Sir, as his sidekick, gets the agency. Sir says he'll just do the paperwork to get the money where Toshi wants it sent, and only for three years. Toshi wonders if he's been given a prediction, but doesn't ask.

3- Toshinori spends a lot of time on I-island in his retirement. David is one of the few people he has, after all, and once he is firm in his retirement and official death, Dave is just happy that he's alive and returning his hug to put other thoughts out of his mind for a while. Only a while, though- Dave knows the power vacuum and crime surge that's ramping up. Toshinori can't fight it anymore, but he's strategic and has a lot of intel on villains in japan, and the two of them make plans and send support to the heroes back home. It helps, a little bit.

4- But Toshinori can’t stay on I-island, even if he feels most helpful there, even if Dave and Melissa’s guest room is all but his. Nana died for Japan, and he sacrificed a lot for it too, and it’s easier to keep an eye on things there. So a lot of movement back and forth. He didn’t die after three years. Sir makes his own agency, and it’s strained but not without contact. Toshinori is tired. The world keeps changing and won’t let him rest. But, one visit to I-island, Melissa mentions that there’s a new student at the academy, a freshman who’s quirkless and from Japan. Izuku Midoriya, she thinks he and her uncle would get along.

5- so, the ripples: Because of increased crime, Inko and Izuku leave Japan to go join Hisashi working abroad, which is stressful but eventually Izuku wins entrance into I-island’s academy, the closest he could get to heroics as no schools near his new home accepted quirkless students and his parents refused to return to Japan. Endeavor, thrust into the Number One position six years early, has much less time to be home and Shoto is glad. When Fuyumi turns eighteen, she quietly asks her father for an allowance and an apartment away to watch her brothers in. Enji, two years into this change, agrees. Bakugou and Tsubasa are the two students from Aldera Middle to make it to UA High- they haven’t seen Deku since he moved away in other school, and haven’t thought about him for a couple of years. They’re close, though, as the orphanage Tsubasa lived in closed due to lack of funding and Tsubasa’s been crashing on his couch more often than not, which is not exactly a healthy environment but is better than going in the nomu soup. Mina comes across a giant man who’s sniffing around insisting that he smells All Might, that he's still here, still alive, he needs to find him. Mina watches him investigate a building that looks run down and abandoned until a short old man walks by, says he's dead, but the building is where he used to live, historic location, can’t torn down for it. The giant keeps insisting that he’s alive, the scent fresh. Mina tells him she wishes All Might was alive too, but she going to be a hero inspired by- the man lashes out, angry, and Kirishima can’t help but watches as the old man moves quickly, and the next thing he knows he’s sitting next to Mina as the police drive the giant away and the EMTs look over his friend, who’s alright but going to have a much more heroic scar than him. They promise to be heroes and have each other’s back. When they get to UA, their class looks different, fewer people each year take the entrance exam, though still more than most other schools. Hawks is exhausted as his rise through the top heroes is planned to emulate All Might’s. He had to make top ten before he was twenty, to beat Endeavor’s record, and sometime between his twenty fifth and twenty sixth birthday he knows he’s going to hit number one, burning through more and more official cases to get the number he needs. It’s not hard, with crime rates rising, even if it’s not going up as sharply as David and Toshi feared. The Yakuza is even making a comeback, as much as vigilante Stendhal tries to fight it, and Chisaki Kai’s sister is not allowed to leave the family to get married, too much risk. She resents this and slips some secrets to Giran, who’s curious about her adopted brother’s quirks- a shame his old patron isn’t around anymore, but he's got an annoying nineteen year old Tomura upstairs in his loft who tracked him down years ago, leading a mostly unresponsive Kurogiri by the hand, demanding to know why he’s been abandoned and how to fix the only caretaker he has left.

BNHA AU: Villain's Quarter

Some areas of Japan are known officially as 'dead zones' or 'ghost towns'. Some were destroyed in the early quirk riots, some victim to a villain attack that resisted clean up, some the site of an attack so brutal the vast majority of the people living there left. They have no police, no heroes, but not no people. They are well populated, by those unwelcome anywhere else - the poor, the mutants and, most of all, the villains. Southwest Mutsutafu is one of them - the locals call it the Villain's Quarter.

Midoriya Izuku's mother dies a few days after he turns 13. Her funeral comes and goes, leaving Izuku all alone.

After Inko dies, Bakugo is nicer. Not nice, exactly, but on one memorable occasion he asks if Izuku's foster family is ok. Izuku cries, because Bakugo is the only person who would care to ask, and he cries because there is no foster family. He thanks him and tells him they are nice enough.

Here, the quirkless are considered legal adults at 12, he's already aged out of the foster system/any legal protections for children.

He has no money other than what was in the house - he knew his mother had a will, but he got nothing. She left him something - she told him, but apparently whoever was in charge of her will didn't see fit to give him anything. He was hungry. He was tired. He was so lonely.

Bakugo may have gotten nicer, but the other students had only become more cruel. He'd arrived to school only to see Bakugo throwing flowers out the window - the 'go join your mother' notes still inked directly onto the wooden top of his desk. A girl bumps into him, tells him she thought he was a ghost with a nasty laugh. A group of boys tell him to jump off a roof. A particularly nasty teacher asks him why he's still even here.

One month since his mother died, Izuku is done. He ran out of food 3 days ago, and he ran out of hope not long after. Entering the Villain's Quarter is said to be tantamount to suicide - so thats just what he does.

Shigaraki often wandered the streets of the villain quarter at night - Sensei ran the show, and everyone knew who he was. Those who didn't and tried to pick a fight - well.

He's not expecting to run into a kid - skinny and short, still dressed in his well worn gakuran. His eyes are empty.

Faced with what feels like an echo from his past (a little older, but he'd been just as crushed an alone and hopeless, without a hero in sight) he invites the kid back to the bar. He cringes a little, because hes some guy in the villain quarter inviting a cute little kid back to his place, that looks so fucked on so many levels - the kids gonna book it - But. The boy just nods. They get back to the bar in minutes, Tomura makes him a cup of tea (he can feel sensei's heartbreak at whatever way he must be ruining the leaves but thats sensei's problem).

He didn't really think he had much of a heart, but it sure fucking breaks when the kid asks him why he hasn't killed him yet.

So! This AU features a much nicer AFO (he's trying to raise tomura well! hes. not great at it, but he is legit trying) who has morals of a sort. The morals include - touch children and die by my sword, quirk discrimination bad, and 'i will give u the chance to leave before i kill you, because im nice like that'.

He doesn't see the problem with experimenting on dead bodies - but hes not ok with experimenting on living people. Nomu are, as far as he knows, only made of dead people.

He, admittedly, just kinda likes being a villain. Crimes are fun, only some murder is bad, I like beating people up and stealing their quirks. The tale of him being a massive evil is. Kinda not true - he's just a theatre kid. But only OfA could beat him at this point so. Fair. He's not mad ab All Might beating in his face he's like "good fight. good fight - its nice to be on the ropes for a change!" All Might is not aware of this.

Tomura is also nicer! His aim isn't murder All Might, but defeat him so badly it destroys the stupid hero system. He doesn't hate All Might - well, he does, but he's aware that what he really hates is the system and All Might is just tragically easy to dislike if you are Tomura - but there are some people he's of the opinion that them dying is just an all round positive. He wants to murder them.

So when a very depressed baby Izuku shows up, they try to find out what hes doing so they can return him to the correct authorities and hopefully get him some therapy. Then they find out there are no authorities and they suddenly want to murder the whole government. All for One didn't want to rule Japan (too much effort) but at this point it seems like he straight up could not do a worse job than the actual government.

So, they keep him! Izuku helps Kurogiri around the bar and, eventually, starts cooking. Its the only restaurant in the villain quarter and its very popular - you can pay in anything with value (money, gold, information, a lot of drugs, weapons, one time just a whole puppy that Izuku instantly adopted). Izuku is actually kinda happy, for once. He doesn't agree with Tomura or Sensei, but he doesn't disagree - he helps with planning, and he and Sensei have a dedicated time each week were they play with some of his quirks.

Basically Izuku gets adopted by every villain in the prefecture. It is very stressful when you are Eraserhead, chasing up on a lead about a quirk analyst in the villain's quarter and you see a whole child wandering around some stalls selling very illegal goods in broad daylight like hes at a farmer's market.

The Midoriya family are descended from members of the Kurotsuba Clan (who partially regained their humanity during the events of Aragami 2). The family line is full of Shadow Adepts, though this is kept a secret from outside of the family. It wasn't until Quirks emerged that they started practicing their shadow magic more openly.

When tiny child Izuku declared his desire to be a Hero Quirkless, Inko decided it was time to teach him about his heritage and they went on a trip to Rashomon Valley, still long protected by its barrier.

Over the next several years, Inko, Kurai, and Sumire trained Midoriya to use his Shadow Adept powers as a true Kurotsuba warrior. Swordplay, kunai, shadow leap and all the shadow-weaving powers of the Aragami.

In this AU, Inko is a Pro Hero, as a sidekick to Edgeshot. (Edgeshot is not related to the Kurotsuba, but his is classically trained in various ninja arts.) Inko has the skills to go independent, but as she's an Underground Hero, she prefers having access to Edgeshot's resources.

Midoriya is a Recommendation Student at UA, thanks to his physical conditioning, shadow magic, and the fact that the Kurotsuba have some detailed philosophy on the nature of conflict on account of the whole war thing.

Love your Teacher Toshinori headcanons. What I actually meant to ask is if you have any other plot ideas where he teaches as Yagi from the get-go and not as All Might. Or headcanons for aus where he does. (I realise that my wording was pretty vague in my last ask). I like to think that everyone speculates about his hero identity, ranging from the sensible (long retired lesser known hero/ uderground hero) to the WILD (actually a commission plant with death powers Nedzu was forced to hire)

Chose to go in as Yagi as not to draw unnecessary attention to the students. The times where he has to step away to go do hero stuff are explained as medical issues.

Insecure not only about his sickly appearance, but also his apparent weakness. He’s teaching heroics to a bunch of kids with powerful quirks as a supposed quirkless person, while every other faculty member is an active pro hero. He doesn’t like being a hard-ass, but he fears the students won’t respect him otherwise.

None of the kids can put it into words, but they all feel the intense energy Mr. Yagi carries. An overwhelming aura of intimidation that puts them on their guard even when he’s being nice. The fear him, yet can’t help but crave his approval.

It goes from a few jokes to a serious rumor amongst the student body: clearly this guy must be someone important, but who? UA wouldn’t hire just anyone. History grades improve as students spend their free time researching heroes of the past, retired and deceased. Of course it’s possible some of them faked their own death before taking up a teaching job. One or two suggest he moonlights as All Might, but that one stays firmly in the joke camp. Then they start wondering if he might be some kind of reformed villain.

The only student who doesn’t join in on the fun is one Midoriya Izuku. Despite his hero fanboy nature, he’s got nothing on Yagi and isn’t interested in speculating. “If it was important for us to know, he would have told us.” But he listens to everyone else’s theories, and dutifully reports back to his beloved mentor during their lunch meetings.

Every once in a while, Yagi leaves fake clues around pointing to different identities. He tells himself it’s another covert lesson: as heroes, the kids also need to be decent investigators, thus need to learn to distinguish real evidence from red herrings from wishful thinking. But it’s also a good laugh.
