Summary: Anita finds something interesting while doing laundry that might put her relationship with Bernardo in jeopardy.

Anita was finishing the laundry when Maria came home. Bernardo was training late at the gym.

“I’m home.” Maria announced.

“In here.” Anita replied.

“How was your day?” Maria asked, looking at the food on the stove.

“It was fine. The food should still be warm.” Anita wasn’t her normal bubbly self which threw Maria off.

“What’s wrong?” Maria asked.

“Nothing.”

“Are you and Nardo fighting?”

“It’s nothing, Maria.”

“What did he do?” Maria approached Anita. “Talk to me, Ani.” Maria never used the pet name and it could have made Anita break down crying if she wasn’t so angry.

“Are you wearing lipstick?” Anita asked.

“What? Yes? Why?”

“Can you wipe it on this?” Anita handed Maria a white handkerchief, Bernardo’s initials embroidered on the bottom right corner.

“This is Nardo’s good handkerchief’s.”

“Just- can you please do it?” Anita asked. Still confused, Maria wiped her lipstick off on the handkerchief. “Gracias.” Anita took it back and held it next to another handkerchief. “Punieta!” Anita threw the handkerchief’s down and began pacing.

“Anita, what’s wrong?” Maria asked.

“Your brother-” Anita took a deep breath trying to compose herself. “That’s not my lipstick and now I know it’s not yours. So who’s lipstick is it?” She held up the second handkerchief. Maria took is, examining it.

“You think Nardo is-”

“Not think. I know. I just don’t know why he’s so fucking stupid not to hide it. He-”

“Bernardo loves you. You must be mistaken.��

“You don’t think it’s weird that he spends so many late nights at the gym now?” Anita asked.

“He’s got a big fight coming up. Bernardo loves you.” Maria repeated herself. “There are a million reasons there could be lipstick. It does not mean there is another woman.”

“So if I go to the gym right now, he should be there?” Anita asked.

“Yes, because my brother is not a liar.”

“Fine. I’m going.” Anita walked to the front door, grabbing her jacket. “If he’s not there, then I’ll know.”

“Anita, don’t do this.”

“What are you worried about, Maria? If he’s there then he wasn’t lying.” Anita left the apartment.

Anita walked into the gym. Quique was cleaning up, getting ready to lock up. As expected, Bernardo was not there.

“Hola, Anita.” Quique greeted her.

“Where is Nardo? Said he was training late tonight.” She explained. Quique froze. “Where is he, Quique?”

“Yo no se.” He replied.

“Are you sure? What’s her name?”

“Quien?”

“His new whore.”

“Que? Que dices? You think Bernardo has another girl?”

“I know he does. You’re one of his best friends. You don’t know who she is?”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about, Anita.” He replied.

“So you have no idea where he is?” She asked. Quique shook his head. She groaned and left the gym.

Anita and Consuelo sat at the kitchen table when Bernardo arrived home. Anita was to upset to look at him. Consuelo gave him a look of judgemental annoyance.

“Hola, Connie. Que haces aqui?” He checked his watch. “Esta todo bien?”

“I’ll see you tomorrow, Ani.” Consuelo left the apartment. She didn’t say a word to Bernardo.

“Anita?” Bernardo hung up his jacket.

“Where were you?” Anita asked, wiping her eyes.

“At the gym working late.”

“Hm. Funny because I was at the gym three hours ago and you weren’t there. Quique said he didn’t know where you were.”

“Why did you go to the gym?” Bernardo asked.

“You’re not even going to tell me the truth? Quien es ella? Hm?”

“Quien? Que dices?” He sat at the table.

“Who is she?” Anita held out the handkerchief to him.

“What is this? It’s a lipstick stain? I’ve used these to wipe your lipstick off me all the time.”

“Its not mine and it’s not Maria’s. So I will ask again, Bernardo. Who the hell is she?” Anita was holding back from losing it.

“Ani, look at me.” He grabbed her hands.

“Don’t!” She pulled her hands from him. “Just tell me the truth, Nardo. You owe me that much. Are you sleeping with her?” The last question took him by surprise.

“Am I what? You- you think I’m cheating on you?” He asked. She finally looked at him. In all the years they’d been together he hadn’t seen her that angry. “Ani, I would never.”

“Don’t bullshit me. You lied about where you were.”

“I-” He stumbled on his words. “I can explain.”

“Can you?” She asked. “What is wrong with you?”

“I love you, Anita. Have I ever given you cause to doubt that? Have I ever given you a reason to think there was another woman?”

“Why are you avoiding the question?” She asked.

“You want the truth? I got another job. Bartending at a hotel.”

“You bartending? Come on, Nardo, we both know-”

“It’s true. I- I got the job to save up so we could move out of this dump. You’re always complaining about how everything is broken.”

“And the lipstick?”

“Some drunk older woman kissed me.”

“Why didn’t you tell me about the job?” Anita asked.

“No one knows about the job. Not even Maria. I- I didn’t want anyone to know.” He replied. “Ani, I would never cheat on you. I love you. I want to marry you. I want you to have my children.”

“You want to marry me?” She asked, a smile creeping at the corner of her lips for the first time all day.

“Yes! Hold on.” He walked into their bedroom. After some rustling, he returned with a ring. “I want to marry you, Anita. Not now, but someday.” He handed it to her.

“It’s beautiful.”

“It belonged to my mother.”

“I’m sorry, Nardo. I-”

“I’m sorry I didn’t tell you about the job. I just-”

“You should have told me. I also have a stash, We need to get out of this rathole.” She laughed. He leaned over the table and kissed her.

“Te amo, Anita.”

“Te amo, mi amor. It’s late. Let’s go to bed.” They got up from the kitchen table and went to bed.
