Changbin was close to the finish line. Years of running in a straight line had led him to this exact point. He could see it just ahead.

The arena buzzed with excitement, the crowd’s roar echoing off the walls as the two fighters entered the ring under the bright, unforgiving lights. In one corner stood Changbin, his muscles taut and eyes focused. Across from him stood his opponent, a well-known fighter who bounced lightly on his feet, exuding confidence and agility. Changbin watched as he flitted back and forth, arms already raised and ready. Something about this fight felt different, some kind of electricity buzzed in the air around them.

As the first bell rang, his opponent charged forward, throwing a series of quick jabs. Changbin deftly dodged and countered with a powerful uppercut, landing it squarely on the other fighter’s chin. Changbin’s opponent faltered for a moment but quickly recovered. The fighter danced around the ring, his footwork impeccable. He led you to a rundown building that looked like it should be condemned. You furrowed your brow at the sight while your date gave you a cocky smile and a simple: trust me. You followed Mr. Wall Street down a flight of stairs that opened up to a large, abandoned warehouse. Inside was one single boxing ring surrounded by hundreds of screaming men. Some men yelled obscenities while some had fists full of cash they were swinging around wildly.

“Why did you bring me here?” You asked with a sneer.

Mr. Wall Street looked you up and down and rolled his eyes. “Come on baby,” his arm already snaking around your waist, “it will be fun. Besides, I always make great money on this guy.”

His finger pointed to a stocky, but chiseled boxer at one end of the ring. Your eyes drank in his entire form, his arms glistening from the bright lights, his forehead dripping with sweat. While his body looked very strong and almost intimidating, his face looked soft and kind. You continued to stare at the boxer as you and Mr. Wall Street took your seats beside the ring. You listened to the MC announce his name as Seo Changbin.

The fight had begun with the first bell ring. You watched the way Changbin moved and landed blows with an almost water-like fluidity. Changbin’s fists were like pistons, relentless and powerful. His opponent's moves, however, were calculated. Each punch landed with a resounding thud, sending ripples of pain through their bodies. Sweat flew off their brows with every impact, muscles straining under the pressure. Pressure was all Changbin had been feeling for months. He dodged another hit, this time barely missing his chin. As he turned his head swiftly to the left, his eyes locked with yours. You were luminous. The harsh lights of the arena seemed to give you an angelic glow that singled you out from the rest of the crowd. He had never seen anything so beauti-

Some men even tried to rush the ring, seeing their money, their bets, fall flat onto the floor of the mat. Changbin laid unconscious for a moment, his coach at his side, shaking and slapping his face. The referee soon entered the ring and lifted the arm of the other fighter. The audience was en emotion mix of joy and sadness, including Mr. Wall Street.

You stood from your seat and tried to see Changbin from the waves of angry men that were now surrounding him. As you attempted to get closer, your date grabbed your hand and pulled you aside and down a hallway.

“What-What are we doing?” You stammered as your date continued to pull you behind him.

“That asshole owes me money! I can’t believe he lost…” Mr. Wall Street was fuming, his grip on your hand growing stronger.

The two of you finally stopped outside of a plain, white door. His fists pounded on the door and demanded to see the fighter, Changbin. Changbin opened the door slowly, holding a small ice pack on his cheek.

“Yeah?” He spoke with a soft exhaustion.

Mr. Wall Street stood fuming. The air was thick with anticipation as the two men faced each other. Changbin hadn’t noticed you standing there, his head still cloudy from the fight. Your date stepped closer and demanded money. He told Changbin that he is not a man who likes to lose. He told him that he was getting that money one way or another. Changbin scoffed and rolled his eyes. This was not the first time an entitled asshole came crying to him when they lost a bet. You slowly stepped in front of your date and apologized.

“Sorry about this, about the fight.” You said in a tender voice. You weren’t really sure what to say, but you felt you had to say something. Changbin’s eyes softened as he recognized your face again. His body instinctively moved towards yours as you spoke. His eyes watched you closely, almost hypnotized by the sound of your voice.

Mr. Wall Street huffed and swiftly grabbed your arm, pulling you back behind him. You let out a sharp gasp as you stumbled backwards. Changbin felt lightning shooting through his fingertips at the sight of you falling back. He didn’t think about his next move, he didn’t have to. His fists clenched as his jaw tightened. With a swift motion, Changbin swung his fist, landing a solid punch on Mr. Wall Street’s jaw. A sharp crack echoed, and he staggered back, pain flashing across his face. He looked at You then back and Changbin before finally shouting “fuck this!”

He was gone in a flash down the hallway while the two of you stood across from each other in complete silence. Changbin shook off his hand, his knuckles tingling slightly from the impact. He looked at you again, “Are you alright?” His voice was a little gruff and irritated.

You didn’t think about your next move, you didn't have to. Your heart raced as you crashed your lips into his. His lips were soft and warm against yours. You felt the gentle pressure as he pulled you closer, his hand resting lightly on your back. A rush of warmth spread through you, a mix of excitement and tenderness. The entire arena seemed to fade away and all you could think about was how right this moment felt. Changbin held you close against him, his arms surrounding you completely. He was so delicate with you, so tender. Changbin moaned softly into the kiss as you leaned further into him. He had never been so happy to lose a fight.

Knowing Seo Changbin had changed your life. You didn’t know how to truly exist without him at this point. It was like he was everything you were missing, everything you could have dreamed of. Wrapped in a sweet little bow, hiding in a box was the sweet, doe-eyed, giggly man you had come to love so much that it hurt. You were addicted to his angelic smile, his teasing manner, and his morals. He was strong in every sense of the word. Changbin knew when to push and when to pull. He was an equal giver and equal taker. That also meant that sometimes, he pushed a little too hard, and his sportsmanship borderlined bullying. 

Such was the fate of your weekly game night. 

You hold your head in your hand, cards in the other, sighing in defeat. You sort of regret teaching Changbin poker. He was quick to learn, and even quicker to start beating you. You had only one once, and that was because Changbin got up to get the pizza at the door, and you peaked at his cards while he wasn’t looking. You were convinced that somehow he had to know what was in your hand. But, even after repositioning so that you were out of the way of your living room mirror, he still bested you. 

He clapped his hands together, pumping a fist in the air as he boyishly giggled, “I win. Yes!” He happily took a massive bite of the pepperoni pizza as you tossed your cards onto the table, frowning. “This isn’t fun if you’re always winning.” You grumble. “It’s fun…” he trailed off, reaching over and putting another piece of pizza on your plate, “For you.” You drag the plate across the wooden coffee table and heave a tired sigh. 

You both eat in silence for a while until Changbin holds up a finger, “What if we play a different game.” You give him an annoyed look, “What kind of game?” You watch as he pulls out his phone, a devilish smile on his face. His phone screen illuminated his thick, black-rimmed glasses as he flipped through his phone to find what he was looking for. You narrowed your eyes and watched him cautiously as he held his phone over the table for you to read. Grabbing the sleek device your mouth falls open as you read the game that he had looked up. 

“I heard someone talking about it once… And I've thought about asking you to play ever since you taught me how to play poker.” You can’t believe your eyes or your ears. Changbin was proposing that you two play strip poker. There was silence for a moment before you scoffed and handed him back his phone, “In order to play that kind of game, it would have to be sorta even. You’re winning all the time. I would be naked before you even have your shirt off.” You watched as his face fell a little, “But… What if we play a different poker game? That way you have a bit of an advantage.” You pursed your lips in thought. He had a point; but an unfair point… But was it really unfair when he just learned how to play poker a few weeks ago and was now beating you left and right? 

“Fine… We’ll play rummy. Same rules, sort of.” You snatch the deck and begin to explain the rules of the all-to-familiar game. “Alright, let’s start.” You pull out your phone and start a tally for points. “So, if I get more points, I win the round?” He asked, making you nod. “Yes. Since we’re playing by points and not by who goes out.” He bobbed his head, “Alright…” He shifted his hips, resting his weight on his elbows as he studied his cards. 

The first round went to you. Finally. You grin and tap your chin as you look at your boyfriend, thinking about what you want him to take off first. “Pants.” You decided, swiping the cards to shuffle. Two more rounds went by and now Changbin is in his boxers and the only thing left covering your body was your baggy t-shirt. It was really his, but you wore it. You gently placed your panties on the pile of clothes and huff. Whoever wins this match, remains clothed. You rolled your head around on your shoulders, “Alright, deal ‘em.” You wave your hand at your boyfriend who chuckled at your antics. Without saying a word, he slides your five cards across the table. 

You quickly flip the cards and you try not to let your face show it but you only need one card to lay down. In a matter of two rounds, you could very well be out. So, he takes a card from the deck and places a nine of diamonds on the pile. You take a quick glance at your hand and slowly reach for the cards, swiping the two cards off the table and placing the seven down next to the six and five of spades. Discarding the 10 of hearts in your hand, you settle against your couch, looking at the two cards in your hand. The nine of diamonds and the 3 of clubs. You could use them as trash cards if you needed to. 

You watched as Changbin swiped the 10 you just put down and monitored as he tossed three cards on the table, a set of 10s. You bit your tongue, he’s already got more points than you by double. Then, to your shock, he places a 4 of spades down, playing on your 5 and tossing the random card in his hand in the discard pile. You groan, tossing the two cards in your hand on the table. He grinned at you as he swiped the cards off the table, “I win.” You sighed, standing up to collect your clothes to put into the dirty laundry, not wanting to stick around for the gloating part. 

“Where are you going?” he shouted from the other side of the couch. You turned to see him kneeling on the couch, hands on the back of it, eyebrow raised as you stood at the edge of your hallway. “To put my clothes in the laundry?” 

“I believe I won,” he began to say, launching himself over the back of the couch, his biceps flexing at the movement. “So, that means I get to see you naked.” He quickly swiped the pile of laundry from your hands. You put your now empty paws on your hips, “Changbin-” You start to complain, but he tutted at you. “Ah, ah,” he holds up a finger, “rules are rules.” You glared at him, “Are you serious?” He bobbed his head once, “Of course I am.” He took a step back, “Shirt.” You huffed, slowly reaching for the hem of your shirt but then stopped, “I don’t have to do this. You already won the game.” You try to turn and begin to wave him off but he’s quick to catch your wrist. You yelp in surprise as he tugged you to his chest. 

“You can’t cheat me out of my prize.” He hummed, backing you against the hallway wall. You hit the wall with a thud, “Changbin, stop. You’re not being fair.” You whined as he slid his hands under your shirt to your hips. “Fair? You’re the one who’s whining and complaining about not winning.” He playfully snaps at your nose and you lean away, gripping his wrists, “I don’t know what you’re talking about.” You retort as dryly as possible, trying not to squirm as his hands begin to wander up your sides. He pauses for the briefest of moments, quirking an eyebrow as his tongue prodded his cheek. You knew that look, that was his, “Oh, really?” look. You start to protest but Changbin is faster and stronger than you are. 

Before you could process what he was doing, he had your shirt over your head, and hands pinned to the wall using your shirt. You pant, lips parted as he leans into your face, his free hand coming to trail soft, teasing traces against your jaw. Changbin twirls a piece of your hair around his finger, biting his lip as he giggles, “I think you know exactly what I’m talking about… stop being so coy.” You stare at him for a few moments, “You just wanted to get me naked.” You watch as a seductive grin spreads across his face, air sucking through his teeth as he pinned your hips to the wall with his. “I always want to see you naked.” He hummed, placing an open-mouthed kiss on your jaw.

You fist the fabric of the cushions as he groans, thrusting up softly as you settle against his hips, completely stuffed full of him. 

You gasp when he pulls your hips a few inches, scooting his to the edge of the couch for balance. He looks up at you, lust in his eyes as he bites his bottom lip. Soloist SEO SEJUN debuted at the beginning of last year with the critically acclaimed mini-album, NEW GAME, which achieved immediate success. The album sold nearly half a million copies, and his debut song, MELODY, took home seven music show wins. He followed this up a few months later with another EP, to much of the same success. His meteoric rise to fame and fortune is an obvious by-product of the little over a year he spent in 1V1, a fan-formed group from survival show Last Act. By the end of their fifteen-month temporary contract, 1V1 was on even ground with the show’s winners, ENCORE, having sold over a million copies with their first and last full-length album.

The ten months since his last music release have come as a surprise. While it was obvious he wouldn’t maintain the breakneck pace of 1V1’s releases, the quick turnaround between his first two albums seemed like a promising sign. Now, it looks like those signs were misplaced.

That isn’t to say Sejun has spent the last ten months in radio silence. He’s active as a model and an influencer, gracing the covers of Vogue and Elle Korea to name some examples. He also co-wrote the debut album of former group member KIM CHAN late last year. When it comes to his own music career, he seems to have become completely inept.

With each passing day, it becomes increasingly evident he’s moved on to greener pastures: his streaming career. Sejun’s Twitch and personal YouTube channels 세유화 (SEYUHWA)—a portmanteau of his name and Kim Sowol’s poem “산유화”—made their debuts last summer. Since then, he’s streamed almost every day, sometimes for ten to twelve hours at a time. He spends most of that time playing video games—namely Overwatch 2—and occasionally engaging in the usual parasocial conversations with fans. Given that his appearance on Last Act and 1V1’s entire concept both revolved around video games, it was only a matter of time before his solo career did the same. Inheriting the group concept is not enough, Sejun needs to wholly embody it.

From an outside perspective, C Entertainment appears to support his new ventures. His streams sometimes features his manager, KWON INSOO, as a gaming partner rather than a supervisor. Sejun has yet to speak out or complain about his new management. Knowing his propensity for talking shit, his complaints would be known if he had complaints to make. Viewers were also quick to notice that he seems to be happier and more animated streaming than in either of his solo promotional periods, leading fans to wonder if he still wants to be an idol.

Not everyone is as enthusiastic as he is for his new career. He gained notoriety during Last Act after a recording of him flaming his League of Legends teammates in voice chat surfaced. Although tame by gaming standards, it was not the best look for an idol hopeful. Similar controversies would continue to plague him throughout his time in 1V1, though they did nothing to hinder the group’s success. With his freedom to apparently do whatever he chooses, Sejun has once again found himself the target of those who dislike his disregard for an idol image. Some of his streams also feature former 1V1 member ALEX KANG, who retired from the entertainment industry after the group’s disbandment. Though these collaborations were once celebrated by casual kpop fans and die-hard Supports—1V1’s fandom name—alike, Alex’s insistence on distancing himself from the kpop industry and his tendency to ban people in his Twitch chat who ask too many questions about his idol experience have furthered soured some netizens’ opinion of Sejun.

When asked about the state of his music career or if he’s preparing for a comeback, Sejun is uncharacteristically vague. In responses to comments on his Instagram posts of his latest brand deals, he's “working on it” and hopes fans will “wait a little longer.” He elaborated a bit further on streams, assuring fans it isn’t the fault of his management like many of them assume, but rather his own choices. He doesn’t say much more on the topic.

For now, there's nothing for fans to do but wait as he's asked.

District 4 Bang Chan (as Finnick Odair) Dies Seventh - Sacrifices himself to the alien hounds to pull up the spaceships anchor so that Minho can escape.

District 12 Lee Minho (as Katniss Everdeen) Wins the Games - But flies the ship directly into the capitol killing nearly everyone there, including himself.

Little Women - The Ending

What a wild ride this drama was! When you watch too many KDramas there is a constant cynic in you wondering if the drama with a solid start will derail after it hits the mid way mark - or will the finale be a disappointment. Every episode of Little Women upped the level of mystery, thrill, sinister plots, character twists and you kept wondering if the writer and director would be able to tie all the loose ends or will it make no sense at all and leave us infuriated.

The plot twists were largely unexpected, to maintain such consistency over 12 episodes is near impossible, getting 1-2 plot twists right amongst 20 odd is a big win for the writer. It means she had us glued, she had us guessing, she had us theorising and she kept blowing our mind and surprising us. Jung Seo Kyung deserves a standing ovation.

Before I jump into the main characters and their ending - just wanted to put it out there that every single actor/actress in this drama - whether the role was big or small, brought their A game to this drama. This is what great direction and writing can do!

However it left me baffled that people are actually lamenting and disappointed that InJoo and DoIl didn’t get their ‘happy ending’ - are you effing kidding me? Did we even watch the same drama? The romance is a side plot - it didn’t even exist or even if it had , it would have no bearing on the story. Please stop obsessing over this non existent plot point. DoIl was a side plot. Let it be that - don’t make the drama about him.

I will re-emphasise this - a drama made by women for women. The story was about the 3 sisters who loved each other immensely and would go to any lengths to protect each other, the story was about the heiress who went rogue after being denied her right by patriarchy, the story was about a friendship between two young girls wanting to free themselves of their family burdens, the story was about a woman’s revenge to avenge her mom’s death. The story was about these women fighting their battles - winning some and losing some and the men were a side plot, they were mere pawns and let them be at that. Don’t make a woman’s life about the men in her life.

The ending was poetic in many ways - Won Sang A bringing about her own destruction. Her guilt over her mom’s death, her anger at being discriminated channeled in the wrong way. Uhm Ji Won was brilliant, simply brilliant in shifting those expressions and her cold calculated behaviour sent chills down my spine.

In Kyung was the smart, principled one, but was equally reckless and impulsive; however she realised in quick time the importance of holding back the important cards to play at the right time. I’m also glad she realised that brain producing alpha waves is the right choice over her heart racing. Nam Ji Hyun was stellar and I haven’t seen her look this gorgeous in any drama of hers. She slayed the pants look in this one.

InHye - everyone hated on her and her selfishness but she turned out to be equally selfless - never ever forgetting her sisters’ love and sacrifices. Once she found her path, she made sure her sisters were in a comfortable place just like she was. She was a great friend to HyoRin and helped her escape a life that would have been pure hell, and who knows might have tipped her to the dark side. How valuable is their friendship to each other.

InJoo being in the apartment alone - this scene was the most poignant one in the finale for me. How often do we define our happiness by the people in our lives? How often do we forget to place ourselves ahead of others? The grand-aunt did deliver some wisdom nuggets to InJoo. InJoo who loved her sisters and her life was only about them, was now by herself; still loved by her sisters, but free of the responsibility to take care of them, free to live her life. She wasn’t lonely, she was just relieved. Despite all she was put through, her innocence and naivety were not damaged. As @kdramaplaybook on twitter said she grew but she stayed the same.

The consistency in the characters throughout the drama was impressive. DoIl loved his money and he probably liked InJoo too l, but if he had left it all for her - it would be so cliched and inconsistent and hence I liked where it ended. Maybe they will meet, maybe they won’t , there are other fish in the sea. InJoo needs to finally live her life, happiness is not always being with your loved ones, sometimes it also lies in letting them go to pursue their happiness and putting your own happiness first. InJoo can do whatever she wants to be happy - even if that means spending all her money on buying truckloads of lipglosses and icecream.

I may need to write another long post in praise of Kim Go Eun’s performance as InJoo in this drama - she nailed every expression, but most of all I loved her expressions when they changed in split second from ‘There I got you’ to ‘holy shit did I mess up again’. I love Nam Ji Hyun, but Kim Go Eun had the meatier role and she did full justice. Having watched quite a few dramas of hers, this is by far her best one.

The background score and the cinematography were two equally powerful characters in this drama and I can write pages on every shot , frame and scene where they took the story ahead or warned us of the upcoming twist or shocked us to the core. They elevated every frame of this drama. As my friend @KdramasSlump on twitter said - this drama was pure art.

The drama praises would be incomplete without praising the director Kim Hee Won ( also directed Vincenzo) and writer Jung Seo Kyung of this drama. Sure men write good thrilling plots, but women write thrilling plots with equal emphasis on emotions , life’s lessons and well etched characters. Kingdom was a case in point and now it is Little Women.

This drama has so much to be spoken and written about - the social commentary in it, life’s hard hitting truths in so many dialogues, it could well be another long post. It will be a long , long time before I get over this drama and multiple rewatches will happen to discover more hidden meanings behind every dialogue and scene. When a drama sucks you in and engulfs your mind like this - you know the team has delivered a masterpiece, what’s more wonderful is that an all women team delivered it and I will forever be rooting for more of this to happen!

If this drama doesn’t get all the awards - I’m staging a revolt!

The Royal Game - chapter four

Hyunjin is a prince. Felix is a prince forced to be raised as a princess by his mother's wish for a daughter.

Gloxinia symbolises instant attraction, love at first sight, and affection. This chapter is about the ball where Hyunjin and Felix meet. And as you can probably guess from the flower, someone is going to fall in love at first sight.

Walking down the winding marble steps, Hyunjin spotted his cousin heading towards him, a wide smile on her face, and a half-full glass of white wine in hand. “Cousin,” he said with open arms, giving her a quick hug, seeing the women around staring and waiting for their turn to approach.

“I’ve already done a bit of mingling. I think there are quite a few women here that you will be interested in.” Yeji moved to stand on Hyunjin’s left side. She wore an elegant, deep-blue ball gown where the bodice tied up behind her neck, and her hair flowed over her shoulders.

They both scanned over the crowd, aware that the night would be a long one.

Hyunjin took another sip of his wine. “And who may those women be? I know Princess Seo Soojin is someone mother wants me to entertain, and I’d like to meet her too.”

“I haven’t spoken with Princess Soojin yet, I wanted to wait until you arrived. Saying that I don’t think I’ve seen Lord Dweahi yet, either.”

Hyunjin chuckled, “That may be for the best at the moment. It’ll be better if he’s coming late, I don’t want him getting too dunk early into the night. Is the man that potentially caught your heart here?”

“No,” Yeji sighed, there was a sadness to it. “The people invited here are for you, not me. Though, it’s not like I don’t have friends here. I’m a lot more social than you.” She gave Hyunjin a slight nudge with her elbow, winking.

“Hey, I have plenty of friends, thank you very much.” Hyunjin nudged back, chuckling.

Yeji shrugged. “Yet, you don’t have a potential wife. If I weren’t your cousin, I believe they—”

“Prince Hwang Hyunjin, Princess Hwang Yeji, Your Royal Highnesses.” Yeji was cut off by one of the women daring enough to approach first. She curtsied in her light blue gown which the cousins retuned. “I am Lady Kim Minjeong. I come from the Winter Court.” A dimple on her left cheek showed as she smiled.

“It’s lovely to meet you Lady Kim Minjeong. Thank you for travelling all the way from the North of Starean.” Hyunjin extended his arm, the Lady took his hand as he kissed the back of hers. A blush was apparent across her cheeks.

“I’m the one who is grateful for being invited to such an event. This castle is magnificent. You are also more handsome than any of the pictures I have seen.” Her words seem genuine as she looked around with wonderous eyes.

Hyunjin smiled at her flattery, she was the first woman he’d greeted and knew some of their words were to simply be on his good side. He laughed, “that may be because all the current pictures of me are two years old.”

“You may not know but,” Lady Minjeong kept talking, “my family is well involved with the Winter Court’s military. Especially in the Aurora region—that is where we are from.  My brother is an officer.” That caught Hyunjin’s attention which she would’ve known.

“Really?” He said, his pitch raising slightly along with his eyebrow.

The Lady happily nodded. “Yes. Though, I even have a little experience myself, but it’s mostly with horse riding. I have two horses back at home that I very much enjoy to ride whenever I can.”

“You said you’re from the Aurora region?” Yeji added.

“Yes.” Lady Minjeong replied, turning to face the Princess.

“You must have some wonderful mountain terrain to ride along then?” The Winter Court was known for its harsher weather conditions and vast mountain ranges.

Lady Minjeong spoke with her hands. “On good days in the Summer, it is fun to ride up high and enjoy a picnic. One can see for miles, and it is absolutely breathtaking.” The smile of her face was pure, Hyunjin could see her reliving those memories.

“That does sound delightful,” Hyunjin said, noticing other women circling around at a distance, wanting to approach. “I would love to have a dance with you later tonight, and possibly talk some more?”

“Of course, thank you again for allowing me here tonight.” Lady Minjeong caught what Hyunjin was hinting at and stepped aside, curtsying as he walked past.

From the corner of his eyes, Hyunjin watched the blushing Lady scurry back to her mother who embraced her.

“Auntie didn’t say anyone from the Winter Court interested her, however, Lady Minjeong seems to have a genuine interest in the military. She may make a good wife for you.” Yeji waited until they were out of earshot before speaking.

Hyunjin hummed, agreeing. “She is very beautiful too. I’ll see how it goes while we are dancing.”

“Beautiful, huh?” Yeji smirked, cocking a brow.

“Yes, Yeji, I am capable of finding women beautiful. They are the gender I’m attracted to.” Hyunjin shook his head at his cousin’s remark. “Anyway, I’ve got many more women to meet so I shouldn’t make a final choice yet. I can see mother and auntie up above, watching.”

Yeji swirls the wine in her glass. “We should probably go talk to one of the women she’d picked out.” She didn’t need to look up to know they were there; it was obvious from the other guests glaces.

“Do you know where Princess Seo Soojin is? I’d like to meet her sooner than later. Also, I’m sure it’ll please mother if I don’t keep the Princess waiting.” Hyunjin took a sip of his wine, looking over the rim at the crowd around—the crowd that appeared for him.

“I think I saw her near the banquet table earlier. We should walk around more. We need to show off your charming looks if someone’s going to marry you.”

Princess Seo Soojin was stood with a full glass of wine in her golden-gloved hands. Her dress shimmered with each sway from the gold sequin fabric it was made of.

“Princess Seo Soojin.” Hyunjin said on approach, bowing with a smile once he was in front of her.

The Princess’s cheeks flushed. “Your Royal Highness.” She curtsied back.

“Thank you for coming here tonight,” Hyunjin nodded his head towards the other women who stood with her, “if I may, can I talk to you alone for a bit?”

“Yes,” the Princess replied in an instant. Her hand already slipping around Hyunjin’s extended elbow.

Yeji stayed to talk with the other women while Hyunjin led Princess Seo Soojin to the side of the ballroom.

Standing by a window, he took in her full beauty. “I must say, you look phenomenal,” Hyunjin said, feeling the smile on his face. When they were walking he noticed that the gold in both their outfits complimented each other.

The Princess curtsied again. “Thank you, though, you are the more head-turning one. I am delighted to be someone you’ve asked to speak with in private,” she chuckled.

Seeing Princess Soojin in person, Hyunjin immediately wanted to get to know her more. He never really questioned his mother’s opinions, but when it came to talking about marriage, he was cautious if her opinions were influenced by politics. However, with Princess Soojin stood in front of him, he hoped that they had similar interests because he knew he could live happily with her by his side.

“I hear you like to sword fight?” He asked.

“Yes,” she hummed, placing her drink down on the nearby vase table. “My cousin is close to your age and when I would visit and saw him playing around, I wanted to, too.”

“However,” Princess Soojin interrupted before Hyunjin could ask his next question. Her tone changing as if she could sense were their conversation was going, “you should know that my feelings for you are no longer the same.” Hyunjin looked at her, curious. She turned away to look out the window. “While you have been away I have found someone else. I take it your mother doesn’t know yet, as I noticed the glance she gave you when you walked over to me.”

“I see,” Hyunjin said, unsure of what he should say. Out of the three women his mother told him about, Princess Seo Soojin was the one he liked the most.

Princess Seo Soojin retrieved her glass to take a sip. “I’ll admit that you have grown to become more handsome than I imagined, in your time away, but my heart is already set on another man.” There was a glimpse of sadness in her eye, but Hyunjin was unsure if that was towards him, or herself for choosing another man.

Hyunjin gave her a slow nod. “I wish you luck with this man.” He had approached her mostly out of formality, however, hearing that she has someone else, he was a little disappointed.

“And I wish you luck in finding yourself a wife,” Princess Soojin replied, relieved.

The two stood by the window for a little longer, a silence between them in acknowledgement. Hopefully, to Hyunjin’s mother, it would look like they were having an in-depth conversation.

“May I still have a dance with you?” Hyunjin asked, hearing the trumpets be played, announcing the first sets of dances to begin. He was originally hoping to have more time to talk with other woman.

Princess Soojin lifted her hand, “you may,” she smiled.

Hyunjin led her to the dance floor, seeing his mother’s approving glance from above. “Even though there will not be a marriage between us, would a friendship be sufficient? My cousin wants me to make more friends, and well, as you like to fight, I thought I’d ask.”

Princess Soojin covered her mouth as she softly giggled. She placed her empty glass on a passing steward’s tray. “A friendship would be lovely, You Royal Highness. Let’s wish that your wife-to-be understands that our future relationship is purely platonic.”

“Wonderful,” Hyunjin smiled, getting in line with the others who made their way to the centre of the dance. From the corner of his eye, he caught Yeji stood to the side. When their eyes met, she gave him a wink and Hyunjin shook his head, knowing that after the dance he’d have to tell her it was a failed mission. In his two years away, half of the women who approached him on his debut had gone on to find other men. He didn’t blame them; two years is a long time to wait.

The band started and Hyunjin moved like a well-trained oil machine. All his time practising and in the military has made him able to step with such fluidity that it made him an excellent dancer. There are cheers all around from the watching crowd. Hyunjin couldn’t help but smile whenever Princess Seo Soojin stepped closer, and their hands would connect. He questioned if he should have chosen a wife before going to the military. He questioned what his life would have been like if he’d met her before.

“That was marvellous,” Princess Soojin sang with what breath she had left.

“Thank you, I can say the same about you,” Hyunjin replied, bowing.

Princess Soojin blushed, smirking. “I look forward to our friendship.”

“As so I.” Hyunjin kissed the back of her gloved hand. “Until next time,” he said, making his exit from the dance floor.

“So?” Princess Yeji tilted her head, curious about how Hyunjin and Princess Soojin’s time together went.

Hyunjin replied with a sharp laugh, “she has another man.”

Yeji gave a short-lived frown, “I thought she was interested in you?”

“She was,” Hyunjin nodded a thank you to a steward handing out more wine, “two years ago. Time has changed. Though I’ll admit I’m drawn to her, but it’s not meant to be.”

“Too bad,” Yeji shrugged. “There are still plenty of women here interested in you.”

Stepping away from the Lady who’d been hammering him with questions for the past ten minutes, Hyunjin looked around at the crowed and noticed a familiarise face. “Is that Lady Hwang Eunbi?” He gestured towards the woman who’d came forwards at his debut.

Yeji followed his line of sight and gasped. “It is. Yes, yes,” she repeated while pushing Hyunjin towards the Lady, “go talk to her. She’s so pretty, too.”

Hyunjin chuckled while side-eyeing his cousins. “It seems as if you’re using me as an excuse to talk to her.” Though Yeji was right, she was very pretty—part of why he could recognise her.

“Partially,” Yeji replied, giggling like little girl. “You do need a wife, and looks like her parents are here too.” She added.

“Duke Hwang Kwang-Hee, what a pleasure it is to see you here.” Hyunjin greeted, receiving a firm handshake from the Duke—who was one of the officers Hyunjin had while in the military. “You too, Duchess Hwang Tiffany and Lady Hwang Eunbi.” The Duchess and Lady smiled while curtsying.

“Pince Hyunjin,” Duke Kang Kwang-Hee laughed, it hadn’t been long since he’d last seen Hyunjin. “How has the luxurious life back home been treating you?” The Duke seemed to have already had a few drinks as his usually more serious expression was jollier.

“I’d forgotten how comfy my bed was. Made it hard to get up the first few days I was back.” Hyunjin joked along.

The Duke clapped Hyunjin on the back. “Atta boy.”

“I never realised Lady Hwang Eunbi was your daughter.” Hyunjin was surprised that his mother hadn’t told him.

The Duke smiled at his daughter. “Have you two met before?”

“I came to his debut ball, father. You where away at the time.” Lady Hwang Eunbi replied, her eyes locked on Hyunjin. It was obvious that she was still interested in him.

“Is that so?” The Duke hummed, noticing the shy smile on his daughters face. “Well then,” clearing his throat he took a step back, “me and my wife will give you some time.”

Lady Hwang Eunbi was wearing an amber dress with matching amber jewelled earrings and necklace. “Prince Hwang Hyunjin, Princess Hwang Yeji.” The Lady curtsied again.

“You look stunning, I love how you’ve added elements that show off your Court.” Yeji tuned in.

“Thank you, and you are too.” Lady Eunbi seemed nervous which was unsurprising.

Hyunjin nodded at Yeji and his cousin took the que to go somewhere else. “How have the past few years treated you?” Hyunjin started once his cousin was out of earshot.

“Good, thank you. Though, I bet they haven’t been as eventful as yours.” Lady Eunbi’s shoulder relaxed as the conversation took a casual approach.

Hyunjin gave a low chuckle in response, “I believe you may be right.”

“What’s it like?” Hyunjin tilted his head, unsure what she meant. “The military in general? I know, my father and brother are part of the military, but it’s never been something that’s interested me.”

For a period of time in the military, Duke Hwang Eunbi was his officer, and the Duke would talk about his son, Lord Hwang Jungwoo. However, Hyunjin and the Lord never met as the Lord was away on business in the Winter Court.

“Well,” Hyunjin hummed, thinking of what to respond with, “many days blend together, because you will follow a strict schedule for extended periods of time. It was mostly just lots of various forms of practicing.”

“And the travelling?” Lady Eunbi added, her eye seeming to gleam with excitement.

Hyunjin laughed. “It sounds more interesting than it actually was. We only had one weekend while away to explore the nearby area so not much was seen other than our camps. The experience was fun, I got to try a few regional delicacies.” He could tell from the Lady’s expression that she wanted him to continue. “In the Aurora region of the Winter Court, I tried this fruit called a cloudberry. They have an interesting taste of being both sweet and sour. Interestingly, in the Winter Court military, they are often used to help with swelling. See, I’d fallen off my horse once in training and had bit on a bump on my arm, and that’s when I was handed the fruit.”

Hyunjin stopped himself when he noticed he’d started to ramble. He was meant to be finding a wife, not talking about the medicinal priorities of some berries that grew on the other side of the Starean Isle.

“That’s very interesting,” Lady Eunbi acknowledged. “Me and my mother don’t often leave the Summer Court unless it’s to go events like today’s. Even then, nothing like cloudberries is served.”

“That is true.” Hyunjin realised his smile was starting to feel more forced than genuine. The conversation with Lady Hwang Eunbi wasn’t going strong, and he’d started to feel an awkwardness between them. At least his mother could see that he’d attempted to talk to the Lady. Hyunjin couldn’t deny that Lady Eunbi was beautiful, but part of him was telling him that it wasn’t to be

A steward walked past passing out a fresh tray of wine and Hyunjin took that opportunity to go find his cousin again. “Perhaps we will talk again later, Lady Hwang Eunbi.” Hyunjin bowed before taking a glass from the steward.

“It’ll be a pleasure,” Lady Eunbi replied, though her voice showed she knew it wasn’t going to happen.

“So?” Yeji said when Hyunjin popped back at her side.

“She nice but…” Hyunjin’s face scrunched as he thought of a nice way to put what he wanted to say.

“Boring?” Yeji’s friend commented.

“Jisu,” Yeji gasped.

Lady Choi Jisu shrugged, seeing nothing wrong with what she said.

“What do you mean by boring?” Hyunjin questioned.

Lady Jisu sighed, “look, all I’m going to say is that I know Yeji—and if you two are anything alike—then Lady Hwang Eunbi will be too boring for you. Know don’t take that as me trying to advance on you because, no offence, but I already have someone.”

“Then why would my mother try to pair me with her?”

“Maybe because she’s single.” Lady Jisu shrugged.

Hyunjin hummed, before almost drinking the whole contents of his glass. His eyes flickered to a window where outside the sun was gone and the stars were out. “I’m going to get some fresh air. Make sure I’m not disturbed for a while.”

“Awe, is someone a little heartbroken?” Yeji joked.

Hyunjin scoffed, flapping his cloak to air himself. “No, I’m just warm in here.”

“Don’t take too long. Your mother won’t like seeing you disappear. Another dance will be soon so you should find another partner.”

“Of course,” Hyunjin waved goodbye as he made his way to a secluded balcony in the corner of the ball.

He greeted the guard with a nod. “Make sure I’m sure not to be disturbed, please.”

“Yes, Your Royal Highness,” the guard replied, standing tall.

Hyunjin opened one of the large, thick, chestnut oak doors and slipped through into the fresh air. With the door closed behind him, the crowd outside quietened and he felt like he could think clearly again. It was similar to before he had to enter the ball.

Closing his eyes with his back against the door, he could feel his heartbeat calming when he suddenly heard a rustling noise, and his eyes flew open. A woman stood in front of him, her back to him as she rested her elbows on the balcony’s stone banister. He realised he’d asked to be kept alone, but the woman was here before him, and it would’ve been rude to ask her to leave when it seemed she too wanted to leave the ball for a moment of peace.

Unsure as to what to do, Hyunjin carefully stepped towards her and cleared his throat. The woman jumped, spinning around in a split second.

“Oh, I’m sorry,” the woman stammered as she spoke, her wide eyes flying around. “I’ll go back in now.”

The woman began to make her way towards the ball, her hands patting down the skirt of her dress as she walked when Hyunjin outstretched his arm in front of her. “It’s okay, you were here before me,” he gestured with his other hand back towards the banister, “you may stay.”

Seeing the woman not move and keeping her head down, Hyunjin dropped his arm and moved next to where she had been stood. “Don’t worry, I’m not going to do anything to you. I just came to see the stars.” Looking up, the sky was clear and the breeze gentle enough on his skin to not make him shiver.

Hyunjin heard no movement other than the brushing of leaves on the trees below. He could tell the woman had not left, probably conflicted about what to do. “I noticed you have an accent. You’re not from the Summer Court?” In an attempt to calm the woman’s nerves, Hyunjin decided to ask a simple question—hopeful to start a casual conversation.

A few moments went by until the woman replied, “no, I’m from the Spring Court.”

Hyunjin’s smile couldn’t be seen since their backs were to each other. “The Spring Court is beautiful. I visited the capital for a week during my military service. We had a training competition with the Court’s military. What region are you from?”

Silence.

Hyunjin turned around to find the woman in the same position, not moving an inch. He was about to say something else when the woman spoke first: “Flora.”

Hyunjin frowned slightly at the short answers. He wasn’t sure if he preferred that the woman wasn’t latching on to him, or if he preferred if she did. “Oh, um… you may leave if I’m disturbing you—or I can leave. Sorry, it’s just that I’d prefer it if you were next to me while I spoke. I promise I won’t touch you.” Hyunjin wanted to punch himself for making it sound like he was an idiot, or someone that would try to take advantage of a woman.

The woman moved slowly, her dress barely shifting from the small steps she was taking. Hyunjin watched as the woman returned to where she was before. The top of her skirt shimmered as she walked and that’s when Hyunjin took in the woman’s beauty. He’d seen many women so far through the night, yet he couldn’t recognise her.

The woman gently placed and crossed her forearms on top of the banister. “I’m sorry,” she said, quietly.

“You have nothing to apologise for.” Hyunjin turned his head straight, staring out over the vast garden. He could see where he and his cousin sat the other day to discuss what was going to happen tonight. His throat was itching to say something, anything, but he also enjoyed the silence.

“Why did you join the military?” The woman asked, initiating another conversation. Unaware that she was relaxing a tense muscle in the back of Hyunjin’s neck.

So many people had asked him the same thing and every time he said he wanted his mandatory service done so he could devote his time to his wife and people. Even though, after marriage, he wished to return to the military. Yet, outside the ball, with a woman he’d never met before, Hyunjin didn’t feel like lying anymore. Sighing, Hyunjin felt his chest deflate. “I don’t think I want a wife.”

The woman’s head shot up to him, her eyes widened in surprise. Hyunjin scoffed, shaking his head while staying calm. “No, I’m not gay. I just…” Hyunjin spun around to lean against the banister, and he waved his arms towards the doors leading back to the ball—to the room full of people wanting to marry him. Before he could stop it, the words were already spilling out of his mouth. All the thoughts and feelings he’d had over the past years were shared with someone he’d never see again. “This,” he exclaimed, dragging a hand down his face, “this is not how I want to do it. I don’t want forced interactions with women who only want me for my status. Sometimes, it’s not even the women, their families force it upon the girls and the girls only agree because of my looks. I’m not boasting about my looks, I take pride and care in myself. I got lucky when it came to my genes.

“What I mean is that none of this is my choice. I’m here because of what I was born into. I wished I could have a choice in something and even choose the person I’m meant to be with for the rest of my life. The choice I do have is based on women my mother has already agreed on.” Hyunjin looked up at the sky, he didn’t want to see the expression on the woman’s face. He slightly hoped that she felt the same, but Hyunjin knew nothing about her, other than she was most likely a Lady from the Capital of the Spring Court. Someone his mother probably cared little about.

“I—er—please forget what you heard. I said more than I was meant to. I just don’t like how people automatically assume I’m attracted to men because I’m not already married.”

“You’re different to what I expected.” The woman said, glancing at Hyunjin. She looked at him in a way that she also wasn’t meant to say what she did. The words spilled out like the stars across the sky.

Hyunjin turned his head to meet her eyes, they were soft and welcoming. He didn’t want to look away. There was something about her that drew him in. He came out to look at the stars, yet they seemed so much more beautiful reflecting in her eyes. Her face was only half-lit from the light escaping out the ball’s tall windows. Hyunjin’s eyes fluttered for a second to her sharp, full lips.

“Brute.” Her lips stayed is a slight pout after she said it.

It was the only word that came out of her mouth and Hyunjin wanted to laugh. He instantly understood where the woman got her views from. However, the idea to himself was hilarious. Hyunjin enjoyed fighting, but that was only a portion of his real self. Most was kept away from the public, and even those close to him. Status was very important to anyone born with royal blood.

“What do you think of me now?” He asked, leaning closer.

The woman hummed, one hand fiddling with the hem of her other hand’s glove.

The balcony’s doors opened to a man with a sword at his hip stepping through. Hyunjin thought for a second he came to attack, and his back quickly straightened. The hairs on the back of his neck stood up with the rush of a cool breeze.

The man bowed upon realising Hyunjin was there. “Your Royal Highness,” he said, before turning to the woman at Hyunjin’s side. “Princess, it’s time to go. Your mother wants you back now.”

“Of course. Thank you for getting me a few moments alone.” The woman stepped quickly towards the man, her dress swaying. She turned back to Hyunjin and gave a smile that made his face feel warm. “It was a pleasure meeting you, Prince Hwang Hyunjin.”

Hyunjin was too stunned to reply, he should’ve noticed her tiara. It was obvious that the woman was no lady, she was a princess.

As much as people thought otherwise, Hyunjin has been interested in women, but the woman’s smile had him bewitched. She was already gone before he could ask her for her name—who she really was. All Hyunjin knew was that she was a Princess from the Flora region of the Spring Court. But he thought there was no way that the Princess his mother told him about would be stood outside on her own, especially alone. Though, her behaviour once that man appeared changed, Hyunjin could also feel the air around her shift, as if the barrier around her suddenly got stronger.

With long strides, Hyunjin headed back to the ball in search of the woman and his cousin who may know more. Looking around, his cousin was the easiest—and loudest—to find. She was standing, talking with their good friend Dweahi, who must’ve arrived while he was outside.

“Dweahi,” Hyunjin smiled, patting the man on the shoulder as he came up from behind.

“What took you so long? Your mother has been scowling at me.” Yeji glared at Hyunjin as he nodded to where his mother stood, looking down at everyone.

“I was talking with someone.”

“A woman?” Dweahi instantly asked.

“Yes.” Hyunjin wanted to say more, but he wasn’t sure who she was. He hadn’t thought to ask until it was too late. Dweahi and Yeji stared at him, he could tell they were waiting for him to elaborate. “I don’t know who she is.”

Yeji’s eyebrows raised. “What did you mean? Did she not come up to you like ‘Oh hello, I’m so-and-so and I really like you’.” Yeji used a mocking voice as she impersonated what she presumed the woman would be like—how some of the women tonight had been.

“Yeah, what she said.” Dweahi pointed with his thumb to Yeji. “Did she not tell you anything? Are you sure you didn’t imagine her? Are you sure she isn’t a servant that sneaked in?”

“What, no.” Hyunjin shook his head at the statement. “I couldn’t see clearly out there, but… she did say she was from the Spring Court’s capital, Flora after I had asked. Plus, a guard came to collect her, because her mother wanted her back.”

“She’s from the capital? Did the guard address her in any way?” Yeji questioned further.

“Yes, though he only called her Princess.”

Yeji slapped Hyunjin on the shoulder before he could say more. “You idiot, that was Princess Felicia. You know, the one your mother was surprised was coming here since she barely leaves her castle or even her room, apparently.”

“Wait, wait, wait.” Hyunjin waved. “You mean that I just spoke with THE Spring Court’s Princess.”

“How couldn’t you tell? Didn’t she look sickly?” Dweahi interrupted.

“No, she looked healthy.”

Yeji sighed, “Your mother isn’t going to like this.”

“Why not?” Dweahi added.

“I don’t know much, but when I was talking with her yesterday, it didn’t sound like she was fond of Princess Felicia’s mother. From that, I’m unsure what her opinion of the Princess will be.”

Hyunjin was shocked, and unsure what to do next. He wasn’t sure how to tell his mother that he wished to meet the Princess again. And that he just spoke freely about some private feelings with the Princess—feelings he hadn’t even talked with his cousin about.

There was still much of the night left and many more women to meet, yet Hyunjin couldn’t get her smile out of his head. Maybe if he could find the Princess and her mother, maybe his mother watching from above might approve for at least one meeting.

However, as the drinks and dances continued, there was no sight or words of the mystery Princess Felicia. Hyunjin was left, collapsed on his bed as his head spun from all the wine, still picturing the calmness he felt with the Princess’s presence. Wondering if in all the books he read when the characters fell in love at first sight, was what he was feeling? He should have noticed from the tiara that she was more than a Lady. Only once she had left, did Hyunjin regret not looking at her more, the drinks weren’t helping him remember and his eyelids were growing heavy. Hyunjin stretched a hand in front of his face, imagining what her hand would feel like in his. Her hands looked small, delicate—just like her. Always being around loud, bold women, he never thought he might like the docile type. Though, with all the wine he’d consumed, it started to mess with his thoughts, and he started to believe that the Princess was actually scared of him.

Gryffindor vs Slytherin, a rivalry that has been going on for years, Hogwarts wouldn’t be Hogwarts without it. Another thing Hogwarts wouldn’t be with was Quidditch and their Quiddich cup. Today both things joined to entertain the whole student community, the stands were full of people wearing red and green, Ravenclaws were rooting for the Slytherin team because they had lost to Gryffindor meanwhile Hufflepuffs were doing the same but with the lion’s house. Both teams were already on the field waiting for Madam Hooch to blow the whistle and start the match.

Your job was to win the snitch for your team and make them win the cup you were pretty confident in your abilities as a seeker, you were fast and had good control over your broom. In the past matches, you were the one who caught the snitch giving 150 points to your team, and you were sure you were expecting to do the same in the final game. What you were not expecting though, was for the Gryffindor team to switch their usual seeker, third-year Seo Youngeun, to Kim Chaehyun. You shared a big amount of classes with the girl and you never thought she could be the Quiddich type and much less a seeker, this would be interesting, you thought.

Lost in your thoughts you didn’t notice the game had already started until you saw a bludger coming straight to your face, your quick reflexes prevent you from getting hit and having a broken nose, “Careful, Y/N, you don’t want to ruin your beautiful face.”

You chuckled “You are right, I don’t want you taking away the title of “the hottest seeker”, although I know you’d live up to the expectations” you could see the blush rising up her face but you didn’t comment anything on it “I didn’t know you played Quidditch”

“I wasn’t interested in it at first but then I saw how good you were at the sport and decided to be your competition,” she said

“Well, if you don’t start using your pretty eyes to look for the snitch you are not going to be considered my competition.”

“My team is winning at the moment so I can look at more interesting things, like you.” she winked

“It seems that both seekers have spotted the snitch!” the commentator said “They are head to head, this is a seeker battle, who’s going to win it? By the way, today is the first time we are seeing the Gryffindor on the field and we have high expectations of her!”

From the corner of your eye, you could see the girl tense up and slow down a little, it was a really small action that could go unnoticed by anyone but you noticed and instead of taking advantage of it, you slowed down too “Hey, don’t listen to them, you are doing great for your first time” the snitch had already gotten and you couldn’t see it anywhere so you stopped completely taking time to rest. Looking at the score you could see that your team was now in the lead with a difference of 70 points, the other seeker also had seen it and her nerves were increasing “Calm down, if you let the nerves consume you, you are not going to focus on your task, so breath and don’t look at the score.” She did as you told and started breathing more calmly until she calmed down while you looked for the snitch around the field.

Chaehyun was the first to spot it this time and made her way to it, one of the beaters on your team saw her getting close and sent a bludger her way, she was too focused on reaching out for the golden sphere that she didn’t notice the object coming, but you did. You flew around as fast as light and arrived just in time to block the bludger from hitting her receiving the hit yourself making you fall from your broom. The last thing you heard before your sight turned black was “Chaehyun has caught the snitch! 150 points for Gryffindor!”

When you woke up in the infirmary it was late in the night, probably midnight. You were alone and it was dark, the moonlight was the only thing making you identify a little your surroundings. You saw a basket full of candies with a note on it on the chair next to you, you took the note and smiled.

Fortunately, you broke your arm and not your nose, thanks for that btw.
