#29 - Death in the Clouds
Tumblr media
Having just gotten home from vacation I can gladly say I did not experience Death in the Clouds, but guess who did?Ā
Oh, you silly goose, I canā€™t tell you. Thatā€™d ruin it!
Death in the Clouds was a breath of fresh air (no pun intended). It actually ranks surprisingly high in the ongoing list Iā€™ve got going for one of Christieā€™s less famous works. Itā€™s got drama. Itā€™s got fashion. Itā€™s got romance. Itā€™s got France. What more could you want? A particularly unique method and distraction mechanism, thatā€™s what!Ā
This book is one of the greats when it comes to the old trope of that one clue that just doesnā€™t fit, throwing the whole case off. The blowpipe and the wasp on the airplane befuddle even Papa Poirot, who does much of his solving behind the scenes here. Poirot does some of his most thorough and solid detective work in this novel, really digging in on the ground to figure out what happened in the sky. The solution was also one of those where the actual thing itself is not surprising, but the characters involved sure are. This was one where I audibly gasped for the first time in a long time.Ā
To tell you the truth I might come back and edit this review because (cough cough just got back from vacation) my brain is foggy and I donā€™t feel Iā€™m doing this book justice. Just...itā€™s really good, you guys. Read it. Please.
Rating: 8/10. Colour: wasp yellow.Ā

Death on the Nile: The Psychology of the Case
Note on the text: I used Agatha Christieā€™s Death on the NileĀ as published by HarperCollins Publisher in 2011.
This book was my welcome to the incredible world of Hercule Poirot. As someone who was not the biggest Agatha Christie fan prior to reading this book, I was genuinely shocked by how much I loved this book. What I really enjoyed was how much the psychology of the characters played a part of the story.Ā
Unlike Sherlock Holmes, who is all about the facts, Hercule Poirot is deeply interested in the personalities of the people who make up his case. To Hercule Poirot, the psychology of the people in question matters at least as much as the facts of the case does. In fact, Poirot says that a personā€™s psychology isĀ ā€œthe most important fact of the caseā€ (61). That is what makes Hercule Poirot so different from a lot of other characters in the mystery genre. Other detectives such as Sherlock Holmes, Philip Marlowe, or Sam Spade among others are only interested in the facts of the case, and the clues therein. Sherlock likes the intellectual stimulation that the case presents much more than he does the human element. Sam Spade is too suspicious of other people in a world gone bad to give their motivations much thought. Philip Marlowe likewise sees himself as an avenging angel meant to balance the scales of justice against a world that is hellbent on doing evil. None of these characters are really interested in the psychology of the people they are working with. Not so with Hercule Poirot.
He knows that the psychology of the person in question matters just as much as any other fact of the case. That is how he was able to determine that Andrew Pennington was not the murderer. Because, although the facts suggested he might be the killer, Hercule Poirot could see thatĀ
for this crime, something was wanted that Pennington [didnā€™t have]! This [was] a crime that needed audacity, swift and faultless execution, courage, indifference to danger, and a resourceful, calculating brain. Pennington hasnā€™t got those attributes. He couldnā€™t do a crime unless he knew it was safe. This crime wasnā€™t safe! It hung on a razorā€™s edge. It needed boldness. Pennington isnā€™t bold. Heā€™s only astute (293).
It is, as Hercule Poirot says, theĀ ā€œpretty little problem of psychologyā€ (222).Ā
Thatā€™s what made this book so special. It wasnā€™t just the fact that allowed Poirot to realize who the killer was, but the facts combined with an understanding of the psychological profile of all those involved. He realized that he had been operating from wrong point of view. He thought that Simon Doyle had left Jaqueline to marry Linnet, the murder victim. Only once he was able toĀ ā€œlook at [things] in the right wayā€ andĀ ā€œrealize that [Simon and Jaqueline] were still loversā€ did everything make sense:Ā ā€œSimon does away with his rich wife, inherits her money, and in due course [marries] his old loveā€ (318). The problem wasnā€™t that the various clues werenā€™t pointing in the right direction, it was the fact that they had made the wrong assumptions of about the mindset of the people involved.
Human beings are complicated people, who do things, including murder, for any number of reasons. Most detective good detective stories have either a wonderful set of clues that point out who the killer is, or have a brilliant psychological profile of the killer which does things reveal his or her MO and motivations. What made this book special was that it had both. What a great book indeed

Books of 2022: The Sittaford Mystery by Agatha Christie āļøāļøāļøāļø/5 **** It was so nice to start off the new year with an #AgathaChristie book and I'm glad to say that my first book of 2022 was one that does not disappoint! A seance during a snowy winter night turns sinister when a spirit foretells Captain Trevelyan being dead. Major Burnaby doesn't believe it to be true...until he treks through the snow to discovers the Captain's deadly fate. Full of the same thrills and chills you find in any Christie novel, you discover why this mystery is one Christie's personal favorites and why she is the reigning #QueenOfMystery. This is a must read for any Christie fan! #books #bookstagram #mysterybooks #mysterylovers #thesittafordmystery #readchristie2022 #cupofteabooksof2022 #classics #classicmysteries #classicmystery https://www.instagram.com/p/CZE97burE0x/?utm_medium=tumblr

#28 - The Thirteen Problems
Tumblr media
Wow, am I ever behind! In that case Iā€™ve at least got some good news for you - I actually just finished my 31st Christie, which means youā€™re gonna get a couple of uploads in the next few days after these months of silence.
Today weā€™re checking out another short story collection - arguably the most beloved of all of Christieā€™s collections of this kind. Itā€™s unlucky number The Thirteen Problems!
The short story collections seem to all share one thing in common, which is though the crimes they present are many, they are often less severe than what would take place in a full-length novel (read: theft or blackmail instead of murder). I think itā€™s important to know that going in, since it can be a little jarring. This text shows how clever it is by raising the stakes via connection as opposed to severity, as the crimes often concern people the members of the Tuesday Night Club know personally.Ā
Itā€™s a lot of fun to watch Miss Marple and her mystery-maniac pals get to work, and though I was worried it would be repetitive, the ironic humor that comes with Miss Marple besting detectives and writers every time does not wear off. She gets to put her brilliance front and center here.Ā
Itā€™s clear why this is the favoured collection of short stories, at least so far. You could make an argument that since the crimes have passed the stakes are lowered, but hey - if The Daughter of Time taught us anything, itā€™s that justice is compelling no matter the temporal distance.Ā
I give this collection an 8/10! The colour is moss green - a good mix of soft and mysterious...
Oh, by the way - I guess this is technically no longer quarantinechristie since weā€™re out of quarantine now, but Iā€™m keeping the name cause it works! Love ya!

Kyungmi is my favourite character from #QueenofMystery. Why? She's a divorcee who got up from her own misery and runs a lunchbox outlet. She handles things smoothly, backs up her crazy friend Seol Ok like nobody's business and she does not easily give in to bullshits. #KDramaFan mode. Can't wait for episode 11 and 12 this week. (at Fio's Comfort Zone)
