“You overthrew the chancellor," Sabe said. “I wish you had seen it." Padme sounded sad. “So many people from all over the galaxy, and all they could do was squabble. I told them that our people were suffering, and they would have made us wait until some committee flew out to the Chommell sector and checked. They were more concerned with voting along the lines of their alliance than they were with listening to problems and trying to find solutions. It was a mess, and Chancellor Valorum did nothing. Nothing.” —Queen's Peril (E.K. Johnston)

Headcanon that Sabé does not enjoy music, instead preferring silence or the voices of the people she loves.
This of course, stems from the fact that she grew up in a house full of older brothers who were musicians. Since birth she heard nothing but the clamouring sounds of so many different instruments at once.
She only chose to study music because of her family. What else was there going for her? Sure, she could pluck a decent tune on a seven-string hallikset. But merely decent wasn't good enough for her family.
Her parents weren't disappointed in her exactly, but her accomplishments meant nothing compared to her more talented brothers. Tsabin watched them rise to fame, and thus spent her entire childhood in their shadow.
And perhaps that is the root of her insecurities. From such a young age, she became accustomed to being "second-best". Passable. Never in the spotlight, living comfortably behind. Her real name unknown to the galaxy.
It was with relative ease that she was able to quickly adjust to her new role as the Queen's Shadow.

I'm currently in the process of reading "Star Wars: Queen's Peril," getting towards the end of the book, and now I'm starting to lowkey ship Padmè and Sabè. It certainly has much less cringy moments than Anidala lol

REVIEW: Star Wars: The Padmé Trilogy #0: Queen's Peril by E.K. Johnston
Tumblr media
SUMMARY(Provided by Goodreads)
When fourteen-year-old Padmé Naberrie wins the election for Queen of Naboo, she adopts the name Amidala and leaves her family to the rule from the royal palace. To keep her safe and secure, she’ll need a group of skilled handmaidens who can be her assistants, confidantes, defenders, and decoys. Each girl is selected for her particular talents, but it will be up to Padmé to unite them as a group. When Naboo is invaded by forces of the Trade Federation, Queen Amidala and her handmaidens will face the greatest test—of themselves, and of each other.
MY REVIEW: 4/5 Stars
Padmé has always been one of my favorite Star Wars characters, and it is so wonderful to see her story written! This is technically the "prequel" book in the Padmé Trilogy, but I read this one first because I like to read series in chronological order, not publication order.
I loved this book because we see how Padmé became Queen of Naboo, and we see the important relationships she forges with her handmaidens. We also see (from Padmé's perspective) the invasion of Naboo by the Trade Federation, and I LOVED THIS. The only thing I didn't like about this book was that there wasn't MORE to it. I wish it had been longer, and gone into more detail. It skips over portions of the story that we see in The Phantom Menace, but it would have been nice to see something longer and all from Padmé's POV.
I also liked that the author didn't shy away from the gruesome details of the Trade Federation's occupation of Naboo. In the movies, there are implications of the Naboo suffering under the Trade Federation, but in this book you see one of Padmé's handmaidens tortured. It isn't gory, and you don't really "see" much of it happening in front of you as the reader, but I definitely think it adds to the story and it brings out the strength of character in the girl being tortured for information.
I definitely wish we saw more of Anakin from Padmé's POV, even though she's worried about her planet and probably not really paying much attention to Anakin. I think that would have been nice to see, which is the only reason I didn't give this 5 stars.
Overall, I love how this adds to the Star Wars story, and Padmé is generally such a misunderstood character it's very wonderful to have this story (and series) out there.

Queen's Peril
Alone for one last precious moment, Padme drifted over to the window in the corridor. The guards gave her space to think. Face solemn, she looked out over the city, committing the architecture to memory even as the droid army marred it, and making silent promises she wasn't entirely sure she could keep.

E. K. Johnston's dedication to writing books that could be so good but just miss everything that would make them good would be admirable if. it was anything to admire

[ID: A web weaving of Star Wars featuring Padmé Amidala and Sabé, with six images. The first image shows Sabé dressed as Queen Amidala in the royal battle dress, and Padmé beside her dressed in the handmaiden battle dress. They both look very serious. The second image is a quote from Queen's Shadow by E.K. Johnston that reads '"My hands are yours for as long as you need them."' The third image shows Sabé dressed as Queen Amidala in the black travelling gown, looking behind herself to Padmé, dressed in the handmaiden flame-colored robes. They are in focus, with the blurry figures of other handmaidens behind them. They look serious and slightly afraid.
The fourth image is a quote from Queen's Shadow that reads '"She can order me to my death, and I will go. And she knows it. [...] As far as I can see, she will always pick Naboo, and I will always pick her."' The fifth image is a quote from Queen's Peril by E.K. Johnston that reads '"I think the queen and her new handmaiden are up to something."' The sixth image shows Sabé dressed as Queen Amidala in the royal battle dress, and Padmé beside her dressed in the handmaiden battle dress. They look serious and slightly bored. End ID]
