Birmingham Expert Details the Restoration of Neglected Quarry Tiled Floors in Bournville

A customer had recently moved into a property in Bournville and discovered an original Quarry tiled floor in the living room, hallway and a couple of quirky tiled areas upstairs. After searching on the internet for some inspiration, they came across my previous work and got in touch. Period floors like these are very popular and so they were keen to have the Quarry tiles restored.

I went over the property to survey the floor and made notes of all the floors and problems including the removal of self-levelling screed in the living room. This is often used to level tiled floors prior to the installation of another covering such as Vinyl or Carpet. It can be difficult to remove but it can be done. Another issue that would need to be dealt with was carpet glue and paint stains which I found in the hallway.

I worked out a detailed plan for the restoration work and was able to use this to create a quote for the work. Keen to have the floors restored my quote was accepted and a date set for the work to start.

Cleaning a Quarry Tiled Living Room Floor

The first day was spent removing an area of levelling screed from the living room along with a couple of repairs to the tiles. This literally has to be scrapped off the tiles by hand to remove the bulk of the screed. The whole floor was then cleaned with a strong dilution of Tile Doctor Remove & Go scrubbed in with a 120-grit carbide pad fitted to a weighted buffer machine. The resultant slurry was then extracted with a wet and dry vacuum.

The next step was to give the floor an acid rinse using Tile Doctor Grout Clean-up which is ideal for breaking down cement residues. It was let to soak into the floor for ten minutes before being scrubbed. For this the coarse 120-grit pad was switched for a finer 240-grit carbide pad. The floor was rinsed with water and extracted again to remove the slurry.

After inspecting the floor, I was pleased to see that marks imprinted onto the tiles by the previous floor covering had been removed and the tiles were looking so much cleaner. Happy with my work the tiles were left to dry off overnight with the aid of a couple of air movers.

The next day I tackled the Quarry tiled hallway which was stained with carpet glue. The started with a steamer to loosen up year’s old adhesive and bitumen along with a scraper to remove dried paint. The hallway tiles along with a couple of tiled hearths upstairs were then cleaned using the same process as the living room.

After an hour or so of drying the tiles, I applied a coat of Tile Doctor Stone Oil to all the floors and left them to dry for twenty minutes before towelling off the excess. The tiles were then left to dry off completely overnight. Stone oil is the first step in the sealing process and adds colour, texture, and generally improves the condition of the Quarry tiles after years of neglect.

Sealing a Quarry Tiled Living Room Floor

On the last day I applied a coat of Tile Doctor X-Tra Seal to all the tiles to seal them. This sealer is an impregnator that soaks into the Quarry tile, occupying its pores and thereby preventing dirt from residing there. The tiles were

This sealer will ensure that dirt remains on the surface where is can be easily cleaned away. Another benefit of the sealer is it further improves the colour of the tiles and being fully breathable it will allow moisture still in the floor to rise through and evaporate at the surface.

Once complete all the tiled floors looked so much cleaner and colourful, additionally the new sealer gave all the Quarry tiles a consistent appearance throughout the property.

My customer was very happy with the results and before leaving I took time to discuss aftercare cleaning and left them with a complimentary bottle of Tile Doctor pH neutral Tile Cleaner. This is a mild but effective tile cleaning product that won’t impact the sealer which can be the issue with the stronger products you find in supermarkets.

“A pond?” Maglor laughed. “This is a glorious, crystalline swimming hole!”

“It is a hole, I’ll grant you that. You told me it was urgent.” Maedhros rubbed at the back of his neck and sighed noisily. “Stop laughing. I am not amused. We will have to make the journey back in the dark now, and the horses will be tired.”

“Not to worry!” Maglor patted his mare’s saddlebags. “I brought us all the necessaries for at least three days camping.”

“No!” cried Maedhros. “We are not camping! There is work to be done! Tomorrow the workmen are due to set the foundations of the north tower; I must be present to approve the plans of the tile-settings for the west kitchens — and before you say I can entrust that to Lostir, let me remind you of the pattern he approved for the crenellations — what is the matter with you?”

“The kitchens!” Maglor wheezed, doubled-over and clutching his stomach. “Crenellations! Oh! ho! Yes, yes, you had better be sure the kitchens are tiled to your liking, as I am certain you will be spending so much time in the kitchens!”

“I might. Once we are settled. Didn’t you say yourself that I should find new ways of 'expressing myself'?” Maedhros scowled. “And what if I am needed to assist with transporting stones from the quarry? It is good for the workmen’s morale if I participate in the labour.”

“Nelyo,” Maglor said, collecting himself. “Do you remember the year when Amil persuaded Atar to hire Rauron to oversee the restoration of the Mindon’s mosaics, so that he need not go into Tirion himself?”

“Yes,” said Maedhros, glaring. “And I know exactly where you are going with this. This is not like that. This is warfare, this is lordship, it is not mere… decorative restoration.”

“Decorative? It is good Atar cannot hear you now. But no, that is not what I was getting at. Do you remember, that time he took us with him to show us the project, how obvious it was to us — not to him, of course — how little the craftsmen appreciated his interference? Hóndil all but rolled his eyes right out of his head every time Atar turned his back.”

Maedhros went silent and looked away. Maglor waited. At last, he cleared his throat. “Do you think… ? I am not as bad as Father… ? Really?”

Maglor took several steps over the mossy riverbank to stand behind him. He gave his brother’s back three reassuring pats. “Yes, Nelyo. I’m afraid that is really how they feel about your participation. They respect you of course, immensely. But I fear if you do not leave them a little more space, where their expertise is concerned, it may wear away at their fondness for you. Besides,” he said, nudging Maedhros round to face him, “you have been working too hard. What good is a castle with strong foundations if its lord is brittle with cares?”

“I am not brittle,” Maedhros sneered, and shoved Maglor off him. But then his face broadened into a smile and he shook his head. “Fine, you make a strong case. I only wish you had not used deceit to bring me here.”

“There was no deceit!” cried Maglor. “The sky portends rain tomorrow – it was urgent that you visit this pool of the Gelion while the weather is pleasant.”

Maedhros dragged a long breath through his nose, then released it. “It is so quiet,” he said. 

Not so to Maglor: the Gelion bubbled and rushed and the wind rustled the grasses and the birds chittered in the trees, but he did not trouble to correct his brother. There is noise, and there is sound, and to many the latter is quiet. 

“I can hear myself think,” said Maedhros, “and I do not like it.”

There it was. “Yes, the mind will clamour rather loudly for attention when you have given it no opportunity to be heard for so long. But it will go away.”

Maedhros hummed his agreement.

“You know what helps?” asked Maglor, and winked.

“Cold water,” Maedhros answered, deadpan — and was well-prepared for Maglor’s assault, leveraging his much longer limbs to seize Maglor by the waist as he ran at him, then diverting the momentum to hurl Maglor directly into the pool, fully-clothed.

“You brute!” Maglor cried through his laughter, and swung his arms over a log that drifted near the water’s edge. 

“Repayment for your guile.”

“Fair,” said Maglor, and flopped lazily onto his back. He dipped down — the kicked as hard as he could, sending a spray of water into Maedhros’ face. “Now get in, you insufferable rat!”

“Watch how you speak to your lord!” Maedhros jested. 

Then he sat to pull off his boots and roll his trousers to his knees. Wading in, he hissed when his feet touched the water. Maglor drifted, without interfering, watching the lines of care slowly fade from his brother’s face as he surrendered to the waters of their new home.

George W. Whitney House (Rose Hill)

The George W. Whitney Estate, also known as Rose Hill, in Berea, Ohio, was built by a sandstone magnate in 1873 and offers 5-bedrooms and 2.5-bathrooms in 5,400-sq. ft.   Berea became a world leader in sandstone in the 1800s thanks in part to a rivalry between sandstone magnates John Baldwin and George W. Whitney. Legend has it, Whitney’s competitive spirit inspired him to build a house that was bigger and, in his mind, better than his counterpart’s.  The result was Rose Hill, an Italianate mansion located at 330 S. Rocky River Dr. completed in 1873. Preserved, renovated, and well-cared for in the 148 years since, the home has been restored but has a lot of its original character and qualities still very much intact.

     Added to the National Register of Historic Places on October 22, 1974, the home’s rich history is literally etched on a window in the study where Whitney proposed to his second wife. The diamond in the engagement ring was so big, she questioned if it was real. So, he took the ring back and, to prove its authenticity, used the diamond to carve his initials in the window.  Built on the highest point in Berea, one of the home’s distinguishing features is the cupola above the roof where Whitney could climb up and keep an eye on his nearby quarries and the people working in them. Today, the windowed tower is used mainly to suck the heat out of the house and cool it during the summer.

     The 5,400-sq. ft. home has five bedrooms and two-and-a-half bathrooms. Must-see period details include eight fireplaces (two functional), four brass chandeliers imported from Budapest, a main and summer kitchen (both with tin ceilings), a pulley system to carry luggage from the ground level to the bedrooms upstairs, plus two outbuildings including a horse stable with original stable posts intact.  But one of the most beautiful spaces in the house was actually added during a renovation in the 1990s. The primary bathroom, converted from a bedroom, features green ceramic tiles kiln-fired on site, a fireplace, a showerhead strategically placed in a gargoyle’s mouth and a urinal.

How To Renovate Neglected 200-Year-Old Quarry Tiled Flooring

Here we have a Quarry tiled floor at a property in Tiverton which Is a small village in the West Cheshire countryside with many chocolate box cottages and listed buildings. The property which was built in the 1800’s had been inherited by a young couple who had decided to renovate it and this included the old flooring.

To get a better idea of what was needed I paid them a visit to survey the floor. The Quarry tiles were very old and I suspect originally to the property, they had been badly neglected and had clearly seen a lot of wear resulting in a loss of colour. Unfortunately, it was never going to look like new again however I advised on what could be done to clean them up and put some character back into the floor.

Later that day I sent over a full quote for doing the restoration work which included an itemised list of the products needed. I heard nothing back for five months then got a phone call asking if I could help them as they had been unsuccessful completing the floor themselves. Happy to help a date was arranged to start the restoration of the tiles which had seen more activity since my last visit and now had every kind of builder’s rubbish on them.

Cleaning a 200-Year-Old Quarry Tiled Floor

The first job was to give the floor a good brush and scrape to remove as much of the plaster dust and other contaminates as possible. To do this a strong cleaning solution of Tile Doctor Pro-Clean which is a strong alkaline cleaner stripper combined with Tile Doctor Nanotech HBU. This is a heavy build up remover with nano sized particles to help dissolve and lift the stains out.

The solution was left to dwell and soak into the floor for thirty minutes which gives the products time to breakdown the dirt. Then a small section of flooring was scrubbed with a black pad fitted to a weighted buffing machine. Unfortunately, this had very little effect and clearly something more abrasive was needed to cut through the mess.

To up the ante we decided to fit the buffing machine with a 60-grit carborundum brush and run this over the floor with more water to improve lubrication. This combination did the trick and soon made light work of removing the building plaster, paint and cement from the floor. This process generated a lot of soiling which was rinsed off the floor with more water and a wet vacuum.

Next the floor was given an acid rinse using a mild dilution of Tile Doctor Grout Clean-Up, this further cleans up the tile and neutralises the pH level of the floor after the alkaline cleaning products used earlier.

Sealing a 200-Year-Old Quarry Tiled Floor

The floor was then left to dry out for two days before returning to seal with two coats of Tile Doctor X-Tra Seal to leave a wet look to the stone. This product is oil-based which soaks into the clay tile occupying its pores, this adds structure to the tile whilst preventing dirt from becoming ingrained there. X-Tra Seal is also fully breathable which is an important characteristic when select a sealer for older floors that won’t have the benefit of a damp proof membrane.

The work took three days to complete and by then end of the job the character had been restored to the floor. Naturally the tiles were never going to look perfect again but I think they suited the period cottage quite well.

Well Court

In the heart of Edinburgh’s beautiful Dean Village sits Well Court, built in the 1880’s by the then owner of The Scotsman newspaper Sir John Findlay who was disgruntled by his view of the dilapidated tenements which his grand home overlooked. He demolished the tenements and the new buildings provided housing for “a respectable class of working man”

An advertisement from the 1880s described Well Court as, “providing homes of two and three rooms with conveniences, let to a respectable class of working men at rentals of £7 to £12 per annum.”

Although housing conditions were relatively good, the residents were under strict rules and could be locked out if they stayed out at night too long.

The 1891 census was taken on the night of 5 April and shows us some of the first residents of Well Court. By looking at the census, it is clear to see that the first inhabitants of Well Court were mostly families with children.

In 2007 Edinburgh World Heritage and the owners of the building funded a major restoration of Well Court. Using only traditional materials, the project has restored the building back to its original appearance.

The work has included repairs to the stonework, roof, windows, clock tower and communal areas.

The philosophy adopted for the project was minimal repair based purely on need, and using only traditional materials.

A match for the distinctive red sandstone was found in a quarry in Dumfries, and new handmade roof tiles were also carefully sourced, as their colouring and irregular pattern forms an important part of the character of the building. Original paintwork was still evident on the stair windows, and this was analysed to identify the correct colour scheme for the building.

Frank Gehry unveils renovation and extension of the Philadelphia Museum of Art

Pritzker Architecture Prize-winning architect Frank Gehry has designed new galleries and public spaces as part of a revamp of the Philadelphia Museum of Art in Pennsylvania.

The museum's new spaces will open to the public tomorrow on 7 May 2021 after a four-year-long renovation.

A sculptural staircase leads down to the Williams Forum

Called the Core Project, the renovation and extension encompassed 90,000-square-feet (8,360 square metres) including 20,000 square feet (1,850 metres) of new gallery space. The first stage of the renovation opened to the public in 2019.

Canadian-American architect Gehry led the process of redesigning the historic building on Fairmount hill.

The Lenfest Hall has been renovated

Designed by American architect Horace Trumbauer and his chief designer, African American architect Julian Abele, the museum first opened to the public in 1928.

Frank Gehry worked with the same material used by the original architects, a golden limestone called Kasota stone, which is quarried in a small town in southern Minnesota.

Limestone lines the new Williams Forum

"The goal in all of our work at the Philadelphia Museum of Art has been to let the museum guide our hand," said Gehry.

"The brilliant architects who came before us created a strong and intelligent design that we have tried to respect, and in some cases accentuate," he added.

"Our overarching goal has been to create spaces for art and for people."

The new public space has a domes white ceiling

The Robbi and Bruce Toll Terrace – formally the West Terrace – has been rebuilt with integrated Kasota stone and granite ramps to make the museum accessible.

On the first floor the main entrance, called the Lenfest Hall, has been renovated. Its stone walls and columns have been cleaned and new LED ceiling lights installed.

Gehry also designed an admissions desks for the Lenfest Hall, which is clad in Douglas fir and topped by bronze counters.

A new public space called the Williams Forum connects the ground floor to the upper storeys. It is reached via a 40-foot-high (12 metres) sculptural staircase clad in Kasota stone with bronze-topped railings.

A domed ceiling of white plaster tops the space, which will be used for large-scale installations and – after the coronavirus pandemic – large gatherings.

Art by Teresita Fernández occupies one wall of the Williams Forum

Displayed on the east wall of the Williams Forum is a map of America made from pieces of charcoal by American artist Teresita Fernández.

Called Fire (United States of the Americas), it "points to the cycles of destruction and regeneration on which the history of this country is built", according to the museum.

Tiles have been restored and pipes laid below the Vaulted Walkway

The Vaulted Walkway, a 640-foot-long (195 metres) corridor running the breadth of the exterior of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, has been reopened again after 50 years.

The Guastavino tiles in the vaults between the collonades have been restored, and new steam pipes, water lines, electric and internet cables have been installed below the paving to improve the museum's infrastructure.

The South Hall has been turned into a sculpture room

A room at one end of the Vaulted Walkway, called the South Hall, has been refurbished and turned into a sculpture display area.

Gehry is a much-lauded architect and the recipient of the Pritzker Architecture Prize, Japan's Praemium Imperiale, and America's Presidential Medal of Freedom amongst other accolades.

Notable museum projects from his practice include the upcoming Luma Arles arts tower in southern France, which is slated to open in June, and the Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao.

Beautiful and historic Tuscarawas County is home to Schoenbrunn, the first Protestant settlement in Ohio. Astronaut John Glenn took his first flying lessons at Harry Clever Field in New Philadelphia. Newcomerstown was the childhood home to baseball great Cy Young, while Ohio State football legend Woody Hayes started his head coaching career with the New Philadelphia Quakers. The city of Dover holds the famous Mooney Warther Carvings Museum, and Sugarcreek is the Gateway to Amish country. From top to bottom and all throughout, Tuscarawas County is full of history and accomplishment.

The Tuscarawas County Courthouse is located at 125 East High Avenue in the county seat of New Philadelphia, Ohio. The courthouse was designed by architect Thomas Boyd in 1882 in the Classical Revival style and constructed in 1884. It is built of sandstone from a Medina quarry. The entrance to the courthouse features a pediment and is supported by columns with Corinthian capitals. The courthouse’s dome at one time featured a statue of three women known as “The Three Ladies of Justice,” but it was removed for safety concerns after a piece of metal fell from it in 1959.

A cupola with a brass eagle atop the copper roof was added to the dome of the courthouse in 1973. The courthouse was placed on the National Register of Historic Places on July 16, 1973. An expansion was added in 1990 to alleviate the needs of a growing population and blends in with the older structure. In 1996, the courthouse was renovated and restored., which included the stripping of wood trim, cleaning and repair of ceramic tile floors and the raising of the ceiling to its original height of 14 feet. The walls also were painted in a Victorian color scheme. The copper dome was fixed in 2018 restoring the copper color. The Tuscarawas County Courthouse building is still in use and today houses the Tuscarawas County Court of Common Pleas and its probate and juvenile divisions. Tuscarawas County is named after the Tuscarawas Indian Tribe, which once inhabited the area.

Man’s Impact on the Environment Castle’s Rock - 05 July 2020 Château de Suscinio or de Susinio Sarzeau, Morbihan, France

The Château de Suscinio or de Susinio is a Breton castle, built in the late Middle Ages, to be the residence of the Dukes of Brittany. It is located in the commune of Sarzeau in the département of Morbihan, near the coast of the Atlantic ocean. The spectacular site comprises the moated castle, a ruined chapel, a dovecote, and a few ruined outbuildings.

Designed to be a place of leisure, between the seaside and a forest full of game for hunting, the castle's first logis seigneurial (seigniorial house) dates from the beginning of the 13th century.

The castle was fortified and enlarged, at the end of the 14th century, when the heirs of the duchy had to fight to keep their assets (Brittany was not yet fully united to France and did not become so until 1514), after the castle was taken by Bertrand du Guesclin, the infamous Constable of France. John V and John VI constructed a new seigniorial residence block with a large, new corner tower known as the Tour Neuve. A casemate was added at the end of the 15th century to protect artillery pieces.

From 1471 to 1484, the castle housed Jasper Tudor, Henry Tudor (later King Henry VII of England), and the core of their group of exiled Lancastrians, numbering about 500 by 1483. Since the castle could only house some 100 persons, the rest must have been billeted close about, in Kermoizin and other villages nearby.

The castle from across the moatFrancis II, Duke of Brittany supported this group of exiled Englishmen, against all the Plantagenet demands that he should surrender them. For 11 years, Suscinio was an armed camp, alert against any attempt to kidnap Jasper and Henry and return them to England where they were under attainder and would have been promptly executed as threats to the Yorkist rule.Duke Francis II supported the failed Lancastrian rebellion and invasion of England in 1483 with 40,000 gold crowns, 15,000 soldiers, and a fleet of transport ships.

When the Duke suffered from one of his periods of incapacitating illness, his treasurer, Pierre Landais, agreed to surrender Henry Tudor to the representatives of the Yorkist King Richard III of England, in return for a pledge of 3,000 English archers to defend Brittany against a threatened French attack. News of this plot by Landais reached the exiled Lancastrians just in time for both the Tudors to separately escape, hours ahead of Landais' soldiers, across the nearby border into France, where they were received at the court of King Charles VIII of France.Shortly thereafter, when Duke Francis II regained his faculties, he offered the 400 remaining Lancastrians, still at and around Suscinio, safe-conduct into France and even paid for their expenses. 

This may have been the last official use of the castle by the Breton Dukes. Duke Francis II died in 1488, and was succeeded by his 11-year-old daughter, Anne of Brittany, last ruling Duchess of Brittany, and twice Queen of France. She died in 1514 and Brittany lost its autonomy, becoming part of France.The castle was then slowly abandoned by the aristocracy. 

In the early sixteenth century, the former great hall of the 14th century, along the northern curtain-wall, was destroyed. The castle was then confiscated by the French crown under King Francis I of France who offered it to one of his mistresses. 

In 1795, Suscinio was temporarily occupied by the royalists coming from Quiberon and heading to the north of Morbihan. Written off in the 17th and 18th centuries, the castle was used off-and-on as a stone quarry until the French Revolution.During the Revolution, it was sold to a merchant who continued to sell the stones, and it soon after fell into even greater ruin.

The Département of Morbihan bought it in 1965, from the family of Jules de Francheville who attempted to preserve and restore the castle, and began the restoration in earnest. The remains of a ducal chapel was found in the vicinity outside of the moats; its remarkable tiled floor has been carefully removed and restored and is now exhibited in a hall of the castle.

Nowadays, Suscinio Castle has again regained its allure of an intact medieval fortress, but major restoration work continues.

The castle may be unique in Western Europe because of its restoration to its presumed late-15th-century condition; because many other medieval fortresses made obsolete by the use of cannon in warfare were either dismantled or modernised to become "comfortable country houses". Today, few other medieval fortresses remain, structurally, as they were at the height of their late-medieval strength and power; and in this lies the particular interest of the Château de Suscinio.

Exhibitions and summer events attract many people. Since 1840, the castle has been listed as a monument historique by the French Ministry of Culture.
