水中捞月

大家好！

Welcome back everyone for another 成语 aka Chinese proverb or idiom! I am experimenting with including the cover photo this time :3

This week I would like to share with you all 水中捞月 (shuǐ zhōng lāo yuè), literally "to scoop the moon out of water", meaning "a hopeless endeavor" or "reaching for something that isn't there". Perhaps you can already guess how that meaning came to be just from the translation, but let's dive into the story!

There once was a mountain with a big group of monkeys living on it. The monkeys are rambunctious, running all around, making noise, and generally being very silly. One day, a little monkey is swinging in the trees when suddenly he comes across a water well. What's that?! The moon has fallen into the well!! The little monkey is so surprised he starts running and hollering "Terrible news! Terrible news! The moon has fallen out of the sky and into the well!". He runs into (literally) a wise old monkey, who listens with concern as the little monkey explains. Seeing for himself that indeed there is a moon in the well, he thinks to himself that this can't be good. As all the other monkeys come over to see what the commotion is about, they start to brainstorm. Finally, a smart monkey comes up with this idea: everyone climb to the tallest tree, then link one-by-one, hands to feet, to create a chain of monkeys that can reach the moon in the well and lift it back into the sky. They quickly form this chain with the little monkey at the bottom. But when he finally reaches in to grab it, he shouts "Terrible news! When I went to scoop the moon, it broke into many pieces!!". The old monkey laughs and realizes what has happened. "Silly children", he exclaims, "did you even check the sky first? This is just the moon's reflection!" All the monkeys climb to the top of the tree to look at the moon, and raucous laughter fills the night.

So there you have it! 水中捞月, "scooping the moon out of the water" to represent "a hopeless endeavor". I thought this story was was so cute. My favorite was the repeated use of 又圆又亮的月亮 (yòu yuán yòu liàng de yuè liang, "round and shining moon") many times to describe the moon, which I thought was both an adorable phrase and also really brought out the children's book aspect. This was actually the first 成语故事 that I read, but my third post to make! Fortunately that means there's less vocab now then there was when I first read it, so I can see some progress!

It’s Tomb-Sweeping Festival! So, what’s that?

“清明节 (Qīngmíngjié) Tomb Sweeping Day” is celebrated fifteen days after the Spring equinox and is one of the few Chinese holidays that follows the solar calendar. The traditional Chinese calendar divides a year into 24 solar terms and “清明节 (Qīngmíngjié) Tomb Sweeping Day” is the fifth solar term, which for the Gregorian calendar falls on 5th of April this year. Originating from the Zhou Dynasty with a history of more than 2500 years, Tomb Sweeping Day is the most important sacred festival in China.

The main activities are “祭祖 (jìzǔ) ancestor worship” and “扫墓 (sǎomù) sweeping tomb.” People will worship their ancestors with food and flowers. “扫墓 (sǎomù) sweeping tomb” is also referred to as “上坟 (shàngfén) visiting tomb.” When visiting the tomb, people usually carry food and fruit to the tomb. After burning the joss paper, tidying up the tomb and putting willow branches around the gates and doors of the tomb to ward off evil spirits, people will eat the food and fruit before returning to their homes.

This holiday is also important for the national identity of Chinese people. For instance, many people are probably aware that the “Yellow Emperor” is the common ancestor of the Chinese people. So on every Tomb Sweeping Day many Chinese delegates at home and from abroad will pay their respects to the “Yellow Emperor.”

This festival is also an important time for outdoor leisure activities. You can see many people in China “踏青 (tàqīng) going for a spring walk, 放风筝 (fàng fēngzheng) flying kites and 荡秋千 (dàng qiūqiān) swinging.” It is believed that people should fast and only eat cold food on this day. In order to prevent the bad effects from the cold food, people will take part in different outdoor activities; enjoy the spring weather and the change of seasons.

Key Learning Points:

放风筝 (fàng fēngzheng): v to fly kites

The Chinese character “放 (fàng)” means to release. “风 (fēng)” means wind and “筝 (zhēng)” means zither. “风筝 (fēngzheng)” means kite.

Example:

Guǎngchǎng shàng yǒu hěnduō rén zài fàng fēngzheng. A: 广    场              上      有     很多     人  在 放     风 筝。

荡秋千 (dàng qiūqiān): v to swing

The Chinese character “荡 (dàng)” means to move. “秋 (qiū)” means autumn and “千 (qiān)” means thousand literally. “秋千 (qiūqiān)” means swing.

Example:

Wǒmen qù dàng qiūqiān ba. A: 我 们    去    荡    秋千   吧。

Let’s go swinging.
