CV / Resume Help for beginners
Tumblr media
I think I might make a post about making your CV / Resume for tech jobs if you have little to no experience!
You done the learning, the bootcamps, going through tutorials, created projects and put them up on your GitHub account but now you want a job! But crap, your CV / Resume is either a mess or you have no idea what to put on it to apply for tech developer jobs!
During my coding night class, the teacher offered help on it and sadly I can't share the resources he shown BUT I'll make my own resource and help others here!

Been thinking about a Modern!Babel AU centered around colleges aimed around Silicon Valley
Immigrant kids being funneled into CS because it’s the field where the money is (linguistics? Where’s the money in that? You want to starve?).
International students coming to America because all the Big Programming Languages and their documentation are in English, because translations of documentation is to err and to betray, because English is the programming lingua franca, because if you don’t know English then you’ll be “trailing edge.” Source
“As an American and native English-speaker myself, I have previously been reluctant to suggest this, lest it be taken as a sort of cultural imperialism. But several native speakers of other languages have urged me to point out that English is the working language of the hacker culture and the Internet, and that you will need to know it to function in the hacker community.” Source
So they come to America to improve their English because you have to be fluent to be taken seriously. Or maybe they’re born in America and can feel the rot of their native tongue as they grow up, even as they learn more and more programming languages.
Java, C++, Ruby, XML, Python, Swift, PHP, etc.
It’s funny, but programmers, even as they’ve decided on English as the one true language, they create more and more programming languages to suit their needs/problem solving efficiency:

[ID: XKCD comic that is titled "How Standards Proliferate (See: A/C chargers, character encodings, instant messaging, etc.)" It reads,
Situation: There are 14 competing standards. Cueball (stick figure): 14?! Ridiculous! We need to develop one universal standard that covers everyone's use cases. Ponytail (other stick figure): Yeah! Soon: Situation: There are 15 competing standards.
End ID]
(transcript taken from the ExplainXKCD wiki)
And of course, the students from countries on the Indian subcontinent are acutely aware of the unbalanced nature of the work they do, the way they’re expected to do export IT work, despite the digital divide in India, Bengal, Pakistan, etc. Especially since it’s a sign of being well-educated (wealthy) to speak English fluently thanks to the history of British Imperialism on the subcontinent.
Chinese IT students sink or swim thanks Mandarin monolinguism making it difficult to learn English. Americans programmers struggle not to link choppy English with choppy code, even while being monolingual themselves!
Not to mention the heavy sexism in the IT field! Female programmers taking on nicknames on emails and resumes to pretend to be men, so they’ll be taken seriously. Despite the history of women like Ada Lovelace being foundational to computers.
And of course we gotta bring up the ethics of AI, how it’s a march towards the inevitable that only Luddites would oppose. Despite the millions who’d lose their jobs once implemented into the workplace.
Commercial transportation sector lost to self-driving cars.
Digital artists lost to DALL-E.
Manufacturers automated.
But can’t they tell that progress is inevitable? That this is the future and to try to stop it is foolish?
As Anand Giridharadas put it in Winners Take All:
“In [Silicon] Valley, prediction has become a popular way of fighting for a particular future while claiming merely to be describing what has yet to occur”
Elon Musk is a genius. Bill Gates is so charitable. Bezos is customer obsessed, and they’re the future, don’t you see? Infinite growth forever and ever.
Tower of Babel? Valley of Silicon.
Unfortunately I suck at STEM, and I’m an uncultured Asian American, so I don’t know programming languages well, nor do I know enough about other cultures to do Ramy, Victoire, Robin, or Letty justice. Just the bare bones to see the structure of this AU and put it out in the world to see if anybody would like to play with it or add on.

Been a while.
"hi".writeln;
It's been a long while last I posted here. I wanted to publish a message stating that I'm still around & am actively working on a few projects, mainly a website which I am looking to possibly host sometime soon, though it's mainly just to see what I'm able to get out of my previous few weeks (as of now) of experience & for my resume's sake. I'll be posting about it soon, but with the influx of school work, it's been a bit of a hassle to get things done.
Additionally, the game I've hinted towards in the last few posts has since been worked on with the pygame library. I've been able to develop a pretty rudimentary platformer, but it has since lain dormant, but I'll be sure to pick it up again after the website, including other python projects I'm interested in pursuing.
Wishing every one reading this well.

hiiii, i really love your works! my favorites have to be the ones you coded and stuffs. if it isn't a problem, can i ask how you do those? like what sort of tutorials or studying did you take shsgsgahaga because i am very inspired by you. this just a curiosity of some sort so it's okay if you didn't give the full details, i will be very happy with an advice owo
hskfjskdj aaaa thank you??? that's such a nice thing to say... for me i learned coding in uni and i'm a full-time software developer! but i'm so happy that you're interested in finding out how to get started in coding, because you definitely don't need to take a computer science course to be able to code! you can learn programming by yourself and there are a lot of (free) websites & learning materials out there that can help you!!! plus, i'd say that the things i made for genshin are mainly pretty simple so far; all client-based apps with no backends nor frameworks at all! i know you said i don't have to provide full details but this got so long shskdjsl i'm sorry-
ok so i have three types of things i've created for genshinblr: voicelines, chatroom, and otome game.
in terms of coding, this might come as a surprise but the simplest one is actually the otome game (mainly because the game engine did most of the heavy lifting)!! that, followed by the voicelines and then the chatroom respectively, is in order from "simplest coding" -> "more complicated (but still pretty simple) stuff".
Tumblr media
genshin otome
game engine: renpy
language: python
if you wanna do something like genshin otome, you really don't need advanced python knowledge. even with a normal visual novel style (with chatbox and stuff), it's pretty simple to code! renpy takes care of the more complicated stuff here, so you can focus on the more important (+ time-consuming) things like assets gathering and scripting your dialogs/narrations. they have tutorials for that and the community is very helpful if you bump into any difficulties!
but if you want to have something like the p5 visual novel i created, now that's a different story........ *war flashbacks*
Tumblr media
voicelines [ɪ] [ɪɪ]
language: html, css, javascript
first off, don't be scared just because there are three languages being used in this haha html is a super easy language to learn and is used by all web pages you see today. css is basically a language to style and make stuff look pretty. and lastly, javascript is the one that drives the logic of the application! these are all very basic languages for web programming and it's good to familiarize yourself with them before moving on to frameworks and stuff!
concept wise it's really simple. i used videos of the characters' idle animations in the character screen as the background. i also have an variable to store the character information + their voicelines, and used buttons to display the voiceline titles. upon clicking these buttons, the app will append the voiceline content accordingly to the section on the right side. the most difficult part here is the styling.
Tumblr media
chatroom [ɪ] [ɪɪ]
language: html, css, javascript
just like the voicelines, this project used 3 languages. the only thing that makes it complicated is the logic that's driving the 'conversation'...
to offer a high-level explanation, the logic goes something like this: when you click on a character from the left panel's listing, it'll get an array of objects which contains information about what's gonna happen in the chat for that person. then, based on the specified intervals, it'll loop through the items, and based on the type of the object it'll do different things, e.g. showing timestamps, showing chat bubbles, showing emotes, asking user to pick a choice, showing said choice as a chat bubble, etc....
of course, things aren't that straightforward in the actual implementation. for example, when the app is showing a selection of choice to the user, it needs to stop looping through the array and resume said loop the moment you picked a choice. and say you selected a choice, there has to be some logic to pick which item in the list should be shown and which should be skipped based on your selection, because there are branching paths and such, etc.
Tumblr media
so, where can you learn all this stuff? to kickstart, i'd say you can use things like codecademy to get yourself familiarized with the most basic concepts of the languages. there are also tutorialspoint and w3schools and a ton of other websites out there.
after the basics, i'd suggest with start practicing hands-on with actual projects! it doesn't have to be anything complicated and you can always take inspiration from your surroundings! maybe build a weather app. or try to copy twitter's layout to practice your CSS. perhaps code your own to-do list app. practice, practice, practice!
oh and if you need help with any questions or issues, stackoverflow is usually where you would go. but don't be afraid to google stuff. google will be your best friend and you don't need to feel ashamed about it!!
i hope that helped and i wish you luck in your learning journey if you do decide to embark on it!! <3

Oooooohhh myyyyy goddddd synchronized history between all my REPLs on all my devices is so life-improvingly gooooooood!
Just had to switch laptops because one was a lot lower on battery than I expected. At a cafe, don't have charger - thought I had two fully charged laptops turns out I only have one. Okay, tolerable, that's what the second laptop is for. Resuming some Python development.
Normally, that would be annoying. I'd have to go out of my way to retrieve some information. Re-think some commands.
This time? Not only are the pip install commands in my local history, okay yeah you could get that with another shell history sync like Atuin, but so are the Python REPL lines which I ran yesterday on the other laptop. No information to retrieve - it's already inline in the Python history.
Blissful. Utopic.

Neutro (1967), the first - and only - issue of one of the most boring comics ever!
Dell Comics, once the biggest comic book publisher in the USA, if not the world, was desperate for content in the mid-1960s. The publishing partnership Dell had with Western, with Western providing tons of content for Dell to publish, had dissolved.  Western took all its titles, including numerous lucrative licenses (from Disney, Hanna-Barbera, and others) and began publishing them under its own Gold Key label.
Dell had to come up with its own titles to try and keep a place in the market.  In the mid-1960s, at the height of Batmania (due to the Batman television show) that meant superheroes.  Dell had never done superheroes before, but gave them a try just like every other Tom, Dick and Harry who had access to a printing press.
I’ve posted before about Dell’s trio of awful superheroes based on Universal Monsters (Dracula, Frankenstein, and Werewolf).  Neutro was yet another laughable attempt at Dell becoming the next Marvel Comics.
One thousand years ago aliens from the planet Pluto deposited several boxes in the American Southwest.  These aliens were observed by members of a Native American tribe, and the story was passed on through generations until it became a legend.
An adventurer is obsessed with the legend and, after several pages of searching, finally manages to find the boxes.  He brings them to a scientist friend, and together they open the boxes and find--
Tumblr media
So of course they take all the parts and put them together, which results in--
Tumblr media
So there, right off, we see that Neutro isn’t the giant superhero depicted on the cover.  In fact, he isn’t a superhero at all, just a brainless robot (which probably goes a long way in explaining the cover blurb “Neutro does not know the difference between right and wrong”).
After finally constructing Neutro, the adventurer and scientist then spend several pages figuring out what the robot is capable of.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Frankly, I wonder how these guys managed to conduct these tests.  Did they really have Neutro shoot down aircraft, race after missiles, or wander into an atomic bomb test?  And where did they get the herd of elephants, a thousand pythons, and a thousand lions?
Tumblr media
Then these guys begin to have second thoughts about Neutro and the great power he possesses.  But instead of doing the sensible thing like taking him apart and putting him back in the boxes, they just decide “you can’t hold progress back.”
Then we’re right back to showing what Neutro is capable of doing.
Tumblr media

I’m probably crazy expecting this story to make sense, but the aliens’ motivation makes absolutely no sense.  If you’re capable of making a robot that can take over a planet, why wait until the dominant species builds it and then come back and wrest control?  Just use the robots yourselves and take over the planets right away, instead of waiting thousands of years.
Or maybe I’m overthinking this.
Anyhoo, nefarious folks all over the globe have somehow A) learned of Neutro’s existence (probably from all those airplanes, tanks, and ships he destroyed); B) decide they want to control Neutro themselves; and C) know the exact radio frequency used to control him.
There are then several pages detailing the months-long struggle of radio beams from all over the world striking Neutro’s transmission control device,  Finally, one organization - Group 777 - magnages to develop a radio beam strong enough to take control of Neutro .

AND THEN--!!!!
--nothing happens.  There is no second issue, and we never find out what happens to Neutro.
There are no credits for Neutro, and frankly I don’t blame the creators for wanting to remain anonymous.  The writer was D.J. Arneson, and the artist was Jack Sparling (who also drew the original Secret Six for DC Comics, and his work was no better there), and I’m sure they never listed this book on their resumes.
There are elements about this story that make me suspect it may originally have been written for a science fiction comic instead of a superhero yarn.  The giant robots/monster genre had been a popular science fiction trope, as were the evil aliens, and the apocalyptic images of Neutro destroying the word.  And there’s also the complete and utter lack of any kind of superhero action at all.
Either way - science fiction story or superhero origin - the fact remains that this was an excruciatingly bad comic.
I read this as a lad while visiting an older cousin.  He only had a few comics, mostly humor books (which I never liked), and absolutely no DC or Marvels.  Neutro was the only book my cousin had that even remotely resembled the superhero comics I loved, so it was the only one I read.  Unfortunately, it was one of those bad experiences that stays with you your entire life.
And now I’ve shared it with you.  Misery loves company and all that.
