Why are people assuming that everyone at Burning Man is some rich asshole because they paid $700 for tickets? I guarantee all of you know someone who paid or was willing to pay more to see Taylor Swift this year. Plus, the environmental protesters were trespassing on tribal land and blocking the main thoroughfare. That means people from the reservation just trying to go about their day as usual were also caught in the jam. The Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe put out a press release about the situation.
It all seems a lot more complicated than people are making it, I guess, is what I'm saying.

it's once again the time to yap to strangers online to distract myself from the fact that i should be studying for 2 latin exams, 3 italian exams, and the 1 italian test i have to take again
and i will yap about american primeval because i'm still OBSESSED with the series, and also i'm a huge nerd for the native american history
did y'all know that derek hinkey, the man who portrayed red feather, is a descendant of the native americans this happened to? like, if you don't know yet (but i also don't wanna spoil), american primeval focuses on events surrounding the mountain meadows massacre. basically back in 1857 this baker-fancher party was just trying to get to california, and they ended up camping in this place called mountain meadows in utah. they were minding their own business, but the mormons there were already a lil nervous cus they thought the us government was coming for them (the whole utah war thing). and like the mormons lowkey ambushed the party. mormons were insane and i think we need to remember about it.
anyway, the role of the native americans, especially the paiutes, in the mountain meadows massacre is super important cus initially the mormon militia tried to pin the whole thing on the paiutes. but over time it became clear that while some paiutes were involved, they were influenced by the mormons aka used as the scapegoat. once again, the mormons were insane and we need to remember about it. the natives were in quite a pickle i'd say, manipulated by the mormons and then blamed for something that wasn't their doing. it's an example of how indigenous people were often exploited and misrepresented in history.
and derek hinkey, american primeval's red feather, is a direct descendant of the war chief numaga of the paiute tribe. while numaga didn't take part in the mountain meadows massacre, i think he's a very cool historical figure worth mentioning. he played a big part in the pyramid lake war. despite being big on peace and all that, his breaking point was when two paiute women were kidnapped and sexually assaulted by white men. the paiute warriors saved their women, dealt with the white men, and destroyed the williams station. highkey badass.
oh and i found this information that numaga once lied face down for three days to symbolize the suffering his people were bound to endure. don't know if this is true though.
and he died of tuberculosis.

Pyramid Lake in Bloom
Dense bands of blue-green algae, or cyanobacteria, swirled around the waters of Pyramid Lake in October 2024. This western Nevada lake experiences similar blooms on an almost-yearly basis. The proliferation of single-celled, photosynthetic organisms in autumn 2024 became one of the most active bloom events seen in years, according to the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe Water Quality Program.
The OLI-2 (Operational Land Imager-2) on the Landsat 9 satellite acquired this natural-color image of the bloom on October 8. One day earlier, the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe noted that bloom activity was increasing with water conditions favorable for phytoplankton growth, and the lake water was becoming more opaque in some areas. The bloom continued to expand and discolor the water and may have reached its peak around October 15.
A San Francisco Estuary Institute water quality analysis tool showed that levels of sunlight-harvesting chlorophyll-a and an index estimating cyanobacteria concentration both increased between late September and mid-October. These estimates were derived from an ocean color instrument on the European Space Agency’s Sentinel-3 satellite mission with additional processing by the NOAA National Ocean Service.
According to the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe, the autumn 2024 bloom contains the cyanobacteria Nodularia spumigena. Nodularia species are nitrogen fixers common in warm, brackish waterbodies. Recurring Nodularia blooms have been documented for decades in Pyramid Lake, including by Landsat satellite observations and in situ measurements.
Nodularia spumigena has the potential to produce toxins such as nodularin, which can affect the liver and cause other adverse health effects in humans. It may also bioaccumulate in aquatic vertebrates and invertebrates. The tribe reported on October 15 that the bloom was releasing toxins and advised people to avoid contact with the water. It may take two to three weeks from the peak of the bloom for water conditions to return to normal, they said.

Pyramid Lake is located in a remote desert area about 35 miles (56 kilometers) northeast of Reno, Nevada, and is fed primarily by the Truckee River. It is a remnant of the ancient and much larger Lake Lahontan, which formed during the last ice age when the regional climate was significantly cooler and wetter. Scientists believe Nodularia was part of the ecosystem going back to the days of Lake Lahontan.
Today, Pyramid Lake may be best known for its striking calcium carbonate formations known as tufas, as well as its fishery. The waterbody is the only remaining habitat for the endangered cui-ui (Chasmistes cuius), a large, long-lived suckerfish. It was also home to the world record-setting Lahontan cutthroat trout (Oncorhynchus clarkii henshawi), a 41-pounder landed in 1925.

Pyramid Lake, Nevada
This area has long been inhabited by the Paiute, who ancestrally fished the Tui chub, Cui-ui, and Lahontan cutthroat trout from the lake. The Shoshone and Washo also regularly fished in the lake. According to traditional narratives, the Washo specifically were given fishing rights in Pyramid Lake after assisting the Paiutes in defeating a nearby tribe of giants.

I should get back to writing my would-be Faction Paradox novel at some point...
Was going to be a semi-historical treatise on the Saiduka, a group of indigenous peoples in the Nevada region who were warring with the local Paiute tribes. They were more or less completely wiped out, but the Paiute describe them in their histories as a race of red-haired "giants" who lived in great pyramidal crannogs on and around the region's lakes, and according to some reports their name translated to "The Enemy" in the languages of the other tribes of the area.
Their numbers were eventually whittled down, and the remaining survivors holed up in the caves of Lovelock, where the other warring tribes walled them in and set fire to the entrances, eventually suffocating the lot of them. There are reports that they resorted to cannibalism before the end.
For decades their existence was considered a joke, and any scholarly investigation of them was met with derision. What few mummified remains were unearthed from the guano of the caves were purchased from local museums by various lodges in the 1930s, ground up, and smoked. Yes, you read that correctly.
Has all the trappings of a FP story, really.
I stopped working on it about a decade and a half ago since there was *very* little literature on them and what research existed was still largely scoffed at, but fortunately there's been more material published on them since then and I'd have a lot more to work from while constructing the narrative.

Update, Sept. 3, 11:33 a.m. ET: The claim that Ebola is at Burning Man has become so pervasive at X that people are now altering the headline to this article to make it look like it reads, “Yes, There’s An Ebola Outbreak At Burning Man.” That fake headline has been seen by at least 340,000 people on X at the time of this writing. There are also a number of videos that have gone viral on TikTok about the fake Ebola outbreak at Burning Man, including one man who claims that it’s all part of some global conspiracy against spiritual people. Others are reporting on “rumors” at Burning Man since it’s a trending topic on X. Again, there’s no Ebola outbreak at Burning Man. It was started as a hoax meme on X and has spread quickly across various social media sites. —Matt Novak, Forbes | No, There’s Not An Ebola Outbreak At Burning Man | Sep 2, 2023
The closest I've come to confirming the reservation matter is below...
NIXON, Nev. — A tribal ranger’s conduct is under review after he pointed a weapon Sunday at environmental activists and plowed his patrol vehicle through their blockade on the road leading to the annual Burning Man counter-culture festival in the Nevada desert. The incident unfolded on a rural stretch of highway on the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe reservation in northwestern Nevada. The protest calling attention to climate change stopped traffic as attendees were headed to the Black Rock Desert north of the reservation for opening day of Burning Man. —Associated Press | Tribal ranger draws weapon on climate activists blocking road to Burning Man; conduct under review | August 29, 2023
Climate change activists briefly blocked State Route 447 on Sunday as the first of more than 70,000 Burning Man participants were heading toward the event site. Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribal Rangers were dispatched to SR 447 at mile marker 34, where five protesters had set up blockade debris to prevent vehicles from passing through. Vehicles were backed up for several miles during the blockade, the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe reported. Approximately 14 1/2 miles of SR 447 pass through the sovereign Pyramid Lake Paiute Reservation. —Brett McGinness, Reno Gazette Journal | Seven Circles activist group releases statement on police response to Burning Man blockade | Update: Tuesday, Aug. 29

Police Brutality
As for the local law enforcement making them "GTFO", y'all should watch the footage.
Now for the "neopuritan" matter,
Only legit-seeming thing I could find on "neopuritanism" was wordow's definition for "neopuritan": "A modern proponent of puritanical doctrines." Which is... not quite a meaning I expected considering thread. 🤔 Wanna explain wtf you mean, @queer-folk-abroad?
Fact-checking the rest
Not gonna. This bit took long enough. Here're two articles, though:
burning man 2023 explained
burning man is a festival for rich white people who want to smoke weed and trip acid in the nevada desert and pretend they're one with the earth. it's not a music festival or anything that serves any purpose, it's just vibes
a hundred year flash flood just hit nevada, including where burning man is being held this very weekend
dry desert ground can't suddenly absorb water, let alone that much water all at once, so now burning man is a giant mud pit with THICK deep mud
nobody can get in or out, so they closed all the roads
FEMA just told the *73,000 PEOPLE* stranded at burning man to shelter in place, ration food and water, and essentially "you're on your own, good luck"
the port-o-potties are overflowing into the mud they're all walking around in
the official CDC twitter account tweeted (and then deleted) that there's a confirmed ebola outbreak at burning man, but people are pretty sure it's just trench illnesses. like actual WWI trench illnesses
earlier this week, climate activists protested against burning man, and all the attendees drove right past them (and yelled at them, and tried to get them arrested, etc)
there's a private jet at burning man where people can join the mile high club. it just takes off and lands all day and lets people fuck in it. no word yet on the fuck plane's current status/location
and lastly: when the ground here gets wet, the sea monkeys hatch

@the-eternal-quest-for-balance, I cannot attest to all you wrote and I have to assume most of it is correct, what I can attest to is the club was not started by Natives of the Washoe, Shoshone or Paiute tribes. It was started by Johnny Novello of San Francisco in Reno in 1969. Johnny Novello nor his parents were Washoe, Shoshone or Paiute that I am aware of. I say that having a deep connection to the people of the Washoe, Shoshone or Paiute people. My grandfather was John Henry Dressler Sr. Jon Dressler Sr. was the driving force behind the creation of the Inter-Tribal Council of Nevada. I did not know him he died just a few months after I was born in 1970 but I grew up with my Grandma Effie (Zaldain) Dressler and of course all my Uncles, Aunts and cousins. I spent a great deal of time at both the Dresslerville Reservation in Gardnerville NV and the Reno Sparks Indian Colony where Grandma Effie lived until she passed in 2003. At no point, in all those years on the reservations did I ever see a Branded Few cut on a Native much less on the reservation. With that said they have a chapter on the Wadsworth Reservation, Wadsworth is the biggest town in the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe reservation. I never went to Wadsworth, until about 15 years ago when I moved to this area. "The Branded Few, a 1%er motorcycle club based in Reno, Nevada, claims, somewhat unconvincingly, that the prominent swastika found in the center of their patch is merely a good luck symbol, “a combination of four “L’s” standing for Luck, Light, Love and Life.” Such explanations do not explain why a Nazi-style war eagle grasps the swastika. Members of the Branded Few have asserted that they are not white supremacists, which may well be true, but they have nevertheless been reluctant to abandon the offensive symbols." Unlike the swastika of Nazi Germany the "Branded Few" version is more inline with that pattern in not only Native American art and petroglyph but that found in artifacts from India, Persia, Mesopotamia, Celts, Balto-Slav's among many others. But the addition of what appears to be a "Nazi Eagle" seems to contradict the idea that it is based in Native cultures.

During the early-morning hours of February 3rd, 2022, police in Washoe County, Nevada received a call about a vehicle on fire in southbound shoulder area of Interstate 580. Officers responded to the scene and found the car burning about a mile north of the Galena Creek Bridge. Inside the vehicle, police found the body of a young woman. The medical examiner later identified the victim as Anna Marie Scott of Reno, Nevada. She was just 23 years old. Anna's family members describe her as a loving mother who was dedicated to raising her young children. Anna was also a member of the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe and a beloved part of the community. Her loved ones are both heartbroken and baffled by her death. Anna’s family last heard from her the night before she was found deceased. Anna's stepmother said that Anna was posting on social media on the evening of February 2nd but did not post at all the following day--which was unusual.
Around the same time, Anna's stepmother heard news about a car being found on fire with a deceased female inside. Days later, the family learned that the female inside the vehicle was, in fact, Anna. She had died from a gunshot wound to the head. It appears that Anna's killer(s) then set her car on fire in attempt to destroy evidence.

Read with pride!
“Something of a living legend, Daniel Nicoletta (born 1954) has been the leading chronicler of the LGBT civil rights movement in San Francisco over the last 40 years. This is the first book dedicated to his powerful photographs from the burgeoning lesbian-gay-bisexual-transgender mecca that was San Francisco in the 1970s and its journey to the present. Nicoletta is best known for his iconic images of Harvey Milk, one of the world's first openly gay elected officials, who was assassinated by a homophobic colleague in 1978. Nicoletta portrayed the glittering drag queens, the fabulous costumes, the alternative theater world and the quiet bravery of same-sex couples trying to live their lives. Today, Nicoletta continues to document the reverberations of Milk's legacy. He serves as a key point person for LGBT civil rights and Milk-related research. In 2014, one of Nicoletta's photographs was used on a Harvey Milk Forever stamp. 'LGBT: San Francisco' is an essential gay history and a stunning photographic work that is not to be missed.” – from the publisher’s note.

like, there absolutely is a ton of art and music there- significant art as well. and while the festival has absolutely been infested with wealth in recent years, all of the billionaires in the world would not equal 5% of the festivals attendees. So we can start there.
Also, unless we’re going to start aiming similar scrutiny at EVERY OTHER MAJOR CULTURAL EVENT IN THE WORLD, the ludicrous hand-wringing about carbon emissions has to fucking stop. It’s the USA, people have to drive and fly, this is not a problem unique to burning man and the emissions from the combusting art and generators are laughable in the big scheme of climate change.
Trash is a more valid concern, but it must be acknowledged that the event organizers (and the majority of attendees) do take land stewardship and leaving no trace VERY seriously. The all-volunteer cleanup efforts are extensive, and a ton of potential pollutants are banned- things like paper plates, glass, and plastic glitter are (to my knowledge) not allowed.
The Bureau of Land Management has pushed further regulations on the event in recent years, but I cannot stress enough: apart from a population cap, the BLMs big strategy for burning man was to force organizers to hire private security to search vehicles for drugs, and to erect a concrete barrier around the city to ‘prevent a terrorist attack.’ Even locals, who famously HATE burning man, have pushed against this, and a concrete barrier would cause a massive sand dune that would not exactly improve the event's ecological impact.
At the end of the day, the core of burning man's problems has been building for at least a decade: its popularity.
70,000 attendees is, imo, literally too many to reliably manage. The fact that the events cleanup success has deteriorated from 'easily the best the BLM has ever seen' to 'marginal' in the last 10-ish years, consistent with the events growth, supports this theory. 'Simply reduce the number of attendees,' you say? Well, that would make it more exclusive. Which would mean more rich people, less art, less volunteers for the cleanup. Making it more exclusive risks eliminating everything good left about burning man
The keen among you may have sussed out that burning man is held on native land. It is, and the event has a long-standing relationship with the Pyramid Lake Paiute Tribe. This is not without its complications, of course, but I am unable to find any evidence of the Paiute wishing to cancel burning man
And look. It might just be time to end it. These issues are, in all likelihood, insurmountable. I just think the end of burning man should be taken with sorrow, not a sneer
given how famous burning man is, i kind of thought more people on this website would know uh. literally ANYTHING about it
