was thinking about this
To be in "public", you must be a consumer or a laborer.
About control of peoples' movement in space/place. Since the beginning.
"Vagrancy" of 1830s-onward Britain, people criminalized for being outside without being a laborer.
Breaking laws resulted in being sentenced to coerced debtor/convict labor. Coinciding with the 1830-ish climax of the Industrial Revolution and the land enclosure acts (factory labor, poverty, etc., increase), the Metropolitan Police Act of 1829 establishes full-time police institution(s) in London. The "Workhouse Act" aka "Poor Law Amendment Act of 1834" forced poor people to work for a minimum number of hours every day. The Irish Constabulary of 1837 sets up a national policing force and the County Police Act of 1839 allows justices of the peace across England to establish policing institutions in their counties (New York City gets a police department in 1844). The major expansion of the "Vagrancy Act" of 1838 made "joblessness" a crime and enhanced its punishment. (Coincidentally, the law's date of royal assent was 27 July 1838, just 5 days before the British government was scheduled to allow fuller emancipation of its technical legal abolition of slavery in the British Caribbean on 1 August 1838.)
---
"Vagrancy" of 1860s-onward United States, people criminalized for being outside while Black.
Widespread emancipation after slavery abolition in 1865 rapidly followed by the outlawing of loitering which de facto outlawed existing as Black in public. Inability to afford fines results in being sentenced to forced labor by working on chain gangs or prisons farms, some built atop plantations.
---
"Vagrancy" of 1870s-onward across empires, people criminalized for being outside while being "foreign" and also being poor generally.
Especially from 1880-ish to 1918-ish, this was an age of widespread mass movement of peoples due to the land dispossession, poverty, and famine induced by global colonial extraction and "market expansion" (Scramble for Africa, US "American West", nation-building, conquering "frontiers"), as agricultural "revolutions" of imperial monoculture cash crop extraction resulted in ecological degradation, and as major imperial infrastructure building projects required a lot of vulnerable "mobile" labor. This coincides with and is facilitated by new railroad networks and telegraphs, leading to imperial implementation or expansion of identity documents, strict work contracts, passports, immigration surveillance, and border checkpoints.
All of this in just a few short years: In 1877, British administrators in India develop what would become the Henry Classification System of taking and keeping fingerprints for use in binding colonial Indians to legal contracts. That same year during the 1877 Great Railroad Strike, and in response to white anxiety about Black residents coming to the city during Great Migration, Chicago's policing institutions exponentially expand surveillance and pioneer "intelligence card" registers for tracking labor union organizing and Black movement, as Chicago's experiments become adopted by US military and expanded nationwide, later used by US forces monitoring dissent in colonial Philippines and Cuba. Japan based its 1880 Penal Code anti-vagrancy statutes on French models, and introduced "koseki" register to track poor/vagrant domestic citizens as Tokyo's Governor Matsuda segregates classes, and the nation introduces "modern police forces". In 1882, the United States passes the Chinese Exclusion Act. In 1884, the Ottoman government enacts major "Passport Nizamnamesi" legislation requiring passports. In 1885, the racist expulsion of the "Tacoma riot".
Punished for being Algerian in France. Punished for being Chinese in San Francisco. Punished for being Korean in Japan. Punished for crossing Ottoman borders without correct paperwork. Arrested for whatever, then sent to do convict labor. A poor person in the Punjab, starving during a catastrophic famine, might be coerced into a work contract by British authorities. They will have to travel, shipped off to build a railroad. But now they have to work. Now they are bound. They will be punished for being Punjabi and trying to walk away from Britain's tea plantations in Assam or Britain's rubber plantations in Malaya.
Mobility and confinement, the empire manipulates each.
---
"Vagrancy" amidst all of this, people also criminalized for being outside while "unsightly" and merely even superficially appearing to be poor. San Francisco introduced the notorious "ugly law" in 1867, making it illegal for "any person, who is diseased, maimed, mutilated or deformed in any way, so as to be an unsightly or disgusting object, to expose himself or herself to public view". Today, if you walk into a building looking a little "weird" (poor, Black, ill, disabled, etc.), you are given seething spiteful glares and asked to leave. De facto criminalized for simply going for a stroll without downloading the coffee shop's exclusive menu app.
Too ill, too poor, too exhausted, too indebted to move, you are trapped. Physical barriers (borders), legal barriers (identity documents), financial barriers (debt). "Vagrancy" everywhere in the United States, a combination of all of the above. "Vagrancy" since at least early nineteenth century Europe. About the control of movement through and access to space/place. Concretizing and weaponizing caste, corralling people, anchoring them in place, extracting their wealth and labor.
You are permitted to exist only as a paying customer or an employee.
#get to work or else you will be put to work#sorry#intimacies of four continents#tidalectics#abolition

"A Delhi-based engineer has designed a replacement for polystyrene packaging out of “rice stubble” the dead stalks left over after the rice season in India, millions of tons of which are burned every year.
They say wisdom oft comes from the mouths of babes, and Mr. Arpit Dhupar was at first left scratching his head when his young nephew drew a picture of the world with a grey sky.
Everything else was normal, green grass, yellow sun, white and brown mountains; why was the sky grey? It dawned on him that his nephew was drawing the sky as he saw it every year when the rice stubble was burned: grey.
“We shouldn’t live in a world where we have to explain to kids that the sky should be painted blue. It should be a given,” he told The Better India.
So he launched a new business venture called Dharaksha Ecosystems in order to tackle the rice stubble problem. Essentially, the farmers need it cleared off their land asap after harvest. Its high moisture content means it’s not useful for stove fuel, so they burn it in massive pyres.
In his factory, he turns 250 metric tons of rice stubble harvested from 100 acres of farmland in Punjab and Haryana into packaging, while paying the farmers a rate of $30 per acre for something they would usually burn.
Dhupar originally wanted to use mushrooms to rapidly biodegrade baled stacks of rice stubble, but found that the fungus left behind a metabolite that wasn’t biodegradable—in other words, he’d have to create a waste problem to solve a waste problem.
Over time he realized that the filaments that make up the subterranean structure of the mushrooms, called mycelium, were acting as a sort of binding agent, turning the baled stubble into something durable.
“This wasn’t a waste material but could be a usable one,” said Dhupar. “Through bio-fabrication, we could use the stubble waste to create a material similar to [polystyrene], but one that was biodegradable.”
There are a lot of these sorts of sustainable packaging ideas floating around, invented by people who rarely have experience in markets and commerce. This is not the case with Dhupar’s stubble packaging.
He has already prevented over half a million pounds of polystyrene from entering landfills since launching his product, which has numerous, exceptional properties.
They sell around 20 metric tons of their product every month, making about $30.5 thousand dollars per annum, mostly by selling to glassware companies."

NEW DELHI (Reuters) - India's rice inventories surged to an all-time high of 29.7 million metric tons in November, sources said on Friday, nearly three times the government's target, as export curbs imposed over the past two years bumped up local supplies.
Higher stocks would allow the world's biggest rice exporter to boost shipments without worrying about domestic supplies, which were limited last year and led New Delhi to restrict exports of all grades.
Rice reserves in state granaries totalled 29.7 million tons at the start of this month, up 48.5% from a year ago, said the sources who did not wish to be named in line with official rules.
In the middle of overflowing grain bins, Indian farmers have gathered a record rice crop of 120 million tons from this year's summer season, which accounts for nearly 85% of total rice output.
As the new crop rolls in, stocks at the Food Corporation of India (FCI) - the state stockpiler - are set to increase further in the months to come, raising storage concerns in the world's second-biggest rice producer.
The FCI is expected to buy 48.5 million tons of the new summer-sown rice in the marketing year that began on Oct. 1, up from 46.3 million tons bought from farmers in 2023-24.
"Rice stocks are substantially higher, and stock levels will go up only because of bumper production in the new season," a senior government official said.
This year's copious monsoon rains also prompted farmers to expand planting areas.
Concerned over patchy monsoon rains, India imposed export curbs last year. However, New Delhi allowed exports of all grades except 100% broken rice this year.
Removing export curbs would accelerate exports in the coming months and reduce the government's pressure to procure rice, said B.V. Krishna Rao, an exporter.
Farmers from India's breadbasket states of Punjab and Haryana complain that FCI has slowed down its purchases of the new season rice crop due to storage issues, forcing growers to wait at wholesale grain markets.
Rice stocks have backed up at the wholesale markets, leading to losses for farmers, said Ramandeep Singh Mann, a farmer from Punjab.
Farmers incur extra costs because they are forced to wait at the markets with their crops loaded onto tractor trolleys, and long delays in the open could also spoil the crop, Mann said.
"Seeing the delays in wholesale markets, some farmers have not even harvested their rice crop," said Devinder Sharma, an independent farm food policy expert. "The time is running out for harvests."

Finding the Right Indian Basmati Rice Supplier for Your Business in 2024
In 2024, the global rice market will continue to boom, with Indian basmati rice emerging as one of the most sought-after varieties. Known for its unmatched aroma, long grain, and excellent cooking quality, basmati rice is a staple in cuisines around the world. For businesses looking to enter this lucrative market or strengthen their supply chain, finding the right supplier is a must. This guide helps you navigate the process, ensuring a reliable partnership that aligns with your goals and enhances your product offerings.
Why Indian Basmati Rice Is Different
Indian basmati rice is synonymous with quality and tradition. Grown in the fertile regions of Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh, this rice has earned Geographical Indication (GI) status, highlighting its authenticity and origin.
What makes Basmati rice unique is its aging process, where the grains are matured for several months to enhance their flavor and texture. This has led to an increase in global demand despite fluctuations in rice prices. According to the All India Rice Exporters Association, Indian Basmati will account for more than 70% of the global premium rice trade in 2023, thanks to its unmatched reputation.
Key factors to consider when choosing a supplier
When selecting a Basmati rice supplier, several aspects should be considered to ensure a smooth and profitable collaboration:
Certification and quality standards: Look for suppliers with certifications such as ISO, HACCP and BRCGS, which ensure adherence to global food safety and quality standards.
Market reputation: A supplier’s track record in exporting high-quality rice to global markets reflects their reliability and expertise.
Pricing and transparency: Understand the supplier’s pricing model and ensure clarity on factors that impact rice prices, such as logistics, currency exchange, and market demand.
Capacity and timely delivery: Evaluate if the supplier can meet your volume requirements without compromising on delivery timelines.
Top qualities of a reliable Basmati rice exporter
A reliable Basmati rice supplier has these key qualities:
Authenticity assurance: They source rice from GI-tagged regions, which guarantees a genuine Indian Basmati experience.
Sustainability practices: Many buyers today prefer eco-friendly suppliers who follow sustainable farming and packaging methods.
Client-centric approach: Reliable suppliers prioritize building long-term partnerships by offering customization, competitive pricing, and responsive communication.
Global export experience: Suppliers with a strong network and familiarity with international trade regulations make the export process seamless.
Questions to ask potential suppliers
To make an informed decision, ask potential suppliers the following questions:
Where is your rice sourced and processed?
Make sure the supplier has direct links to GI-certified regions and state-of-the-art processing facilities.
Are there quality checks in place?
Discuss their grading system, inspections, and certifications to confirm product consistency.
How do you manage fluctuations in rice prices?
An active supplier can provide information on market trends and hedging strategies to minimize cost variations.
Can you handle custom packaging or branding?
For businesses looking to add unique value to their product lines, suppliers that offer customization are invaluable.
What is your logistics strategy?
Check if the supplier has efficient shipping methods and partnerships with reliable freight companies to avoid delays.
Choosing the Best Option for Your Business
Finding the right Indian rice supplier is a crucial decision that can significantly impact the success of your business in 2024 and beyond. By focusing on authenticity, quality assurance, and supplier transparency, you can build a partnership that aligns with your goals. With global demand for Indian basmati steadily increasing, now is the right time to invest in securing a reliable supplier.
The key to succeeding in the competitive rice market lies in doing your homework, asking the right questions, and prioritizing long-term value over short-term profit.

Prashant Kishor and Yogendra Yadav’s Contrasting Predictions for Lok Sabha Elections 2024
Renowned political analysts Prashant Kishor and Yogendra Yadav have recently offered their predictions for the outcome of the ongoing Lok Sabha elections in 2024. While both analysts have provided their insights, their forecasts diverge on crucial points, adding intrigue to the electoral landscape. Here’s an in-depth look at their predictions and the implications for the political scenario:
1. Prashant Kishor’s Projections:
Kishor foresees a scenario where the BJP replicates its performance from the 2019 Lok Sabha elections but falls short of crossing the 370-seat mark.
He suggests that while the BJP may not exceed 400 seats, it is unlikely to drop below the 270-seat threshold necessary to form a government independently.
Kishor’s analysis underscores the significance of alliances and coalition politics in securing a majority in the Lok Sabha.
2. Yogendra Yadav’s Forecasts:
In contrast, Yadav presents a more conservative outlook for the BJP, predicting that the party will struggle to surpass the 300-seat mark.
He emphasizes the challenges faced by the BJP in achieving its ambitious ‘400 paar’ claim, suggesting that the party’s seat tally may fall short of expectations.
Yadav’s projections highlight the potential for shifts in the political landscape, particularly in key states, which could influence the final outcome of the elections.
3. Alignment with Alliance Dynamics:
Both analysts acknowledge the importance of alliances in shaping the electoral arithmetic.
Kishor’s assessment recognizes the role of NDA allies in bolstering the BJP’s prospects, albeit within a defined seat range.
Yadav’s analysis raises the possibility of the INDIA bloc, led by the opposition, emerging as a formidable challenger to the NDA, contingent on developments in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar.
4. Regional Insights and Seat Projections:
Yadav provides a detailed breakdown of seat projections across various regions, offering insights into potential gains and losses for the BJP.
His projections suggest nuanced dynamics in states like Kerala, Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, and Odisha, with implications for the BJP’s overall performance.
Additionally, Yadav anticipates significant shifts in heartland states like Maharashtra, Rajasthan, Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, and others, which could shape the final outcome of the elections.
5. Impact of Regional Factors:
Yadav’s analysis underscores the influence of local dynamics, including state-specific issues and political narratives, on electoral outcomes.
He highlights the potential for surprises in states like Karnataka, West Bengal, Northeastern states, Punjab, Chandigarh, Himachal Pradesh, and Jammu and Kashmir, which may defy conventional expectations.
6. Implications for the NDA and Opposition:
Kishor and Yadav’s divergent forecasts offer contrasting narratives for the BJP-led NDA and the opposition alliances.
While Kishor’s projections suggest continuity in the BJP’s dominance, albeit within defined parameters, Yadav’s analysis hints at potential vulnerabilities and opportunities for the opposition to capitalize on.
In conclusion, Prashant Kishor and Yogendra Yadav’s predictions provide valuable insights into the evolving dynamics of Indian politics, highlighting the complexities and uncertainties inherent in electoral forecasting. As the elections unfold, the accuracy of these projections will be closely scrutinized, shaping the narrative of India’s democratic journey.

My empathy is wack so I think I can handle it probably. Obviously I'll feel bad about what happened but I think I can handle most topics.
okay so. tw for massacres and artificial famine. answer will be under the cut
okay so. first of all there's a Wikipedia page about list of massacres in India. you can go to the colonial India section and look.
in particular, i want to draw your attention to the Jallianwala Bagh massacre. I'll copy paste the introduction from Wikipedia here.
"The Jallianwala Bagh massacre, also known as the Amritsar massacre, took place on 13 April 1919. A large, peaceful crowd had gathered at the Jallianwala Bagh in Amritsar, Punjab, British India, to protest the Rowlatt Act and arrest of pro-independence activists Saifuddin Kitchlew and Satyapal. In response to the public gathering, the temporary brigadier general R. E. H. Dyer, surrounded the protesters with his Gurkha, Baloch, Rajput and Sikh troops from 2-9th Gurkhas, the 54th Sikhs and the 59th Scinde Rifles of the British Indian Army.[4] The Jallianwala Bagh could only be exited on one side, as its other three sides were enclosed by buildings. After blocking the exit with his troops, he ordered them to shoot at the crowd, continuing to fire even as the protestors tried to flee. The troops kept on firing until their ammunition was exhausted.[5] Estimates of those killed vary from 379 to 1,500 or more people[1] and over 1,200 other people were injured of whom 192 were seriously injured.[6][7]"
this was like the turning point for Indian Independence movement. the sheer cruelty of the British soldiers at a peaceful gathering shocked the colonial world at that time. the perpetrator, General Dyer, was dismissed from service after this. no other punishment. none. in fact, wait!
this is what he got for massacring over a thousand unarmed people. yeah.
And this is just one incident. one incident of colonial British cruelty upon Indians because we were inferior to them.
oh, I haven't talked of the Bengal famine right?
quoting this article here:
"Policy lapses such as prioritising distribution of vital supplies to the military, civil services and others as well as stopping rice imports and not declaring Bengal famine hit were among the factors that led to the magnitude of the tragedy, historians have maintained."
again, towards the end,
"According to experts, following the Japanese occupation of Burma in 1942, rice imports stopped, and Bengal's market supplies and transport systems were disrupted. The British government also prioritised distribution of vital supplies to the military, civil servants and other "priority classes".
The policy failures began with the provincial government's denial that a famine existed. Humanitarian aid was ineffective through the worst months of the food crisis, and the government never formally declared a state of famine.
It first attempted to influence the price of rice, but these measures created a black market and encouraged sellers to withhold stocks."
so they literally caused a famine in Bengal. my home area. which caused the death of about 1-4 million people. i kid you not
And this does not even scratch the surface of what went on in colonial India
This is. not even 1% of what the British did to colonial India
they never teach you these things because they don't want you people to know the atrocities they'd committed in the past. they just want to paint the picture of a proud nation. no hate to you btw im just a bit mad that they do not teach y'all whatever wrong things they did to other countries. sigh

India Waste to Energy Market Size, Growth and Report 2032
India Waste to Energy market is expected to observe a CAGR of 6.16% during the forecast period FY2025- FY2032, rising from USD 3.06 billion in FY2024 to USD 4.94 billion in FY2032. The market has experienced significant growth in recent years and is expected to maintain a strong pace of expansion in the coming years.
Waste to energy (WTE) technology has become important in India’s waste management strategy. Technology offers two primary advantages: generating clean electricity and providing environmentally friendly disposal and management of waste, which drives its demand in the country. Additionally, the Indian government is focusing on advancing WTE technologies as part of its strategy to promote renewable energy, thereby fostering market growth.
For instance, in October 2024, the MNRE stated that India’s overall energy generation potential from waste is around 5690 MW. In this total capacity, the energy generation potential was at its peak for urban wastes, with a value of 1247 MW (covering 21.91% of the total energy generated), followed by cattle farm wastes (862 MW, at 15.14%), distillery wastes (781 MW at 13.72%), raw vegetables (579 MW at 10.17%), etc.
Adoption of Biomethanation Technology is Augmenting the Market Growth
The demand for biomethanation technologies for waste to energy conversion is increasing at an exponential rate within the country. Due to its several environmental benefits and a massive potential towards sustainable energy, the demand for biomethanation technology is rising exponentially in India. The Indian government is strongly focusing on the introduction of biomethanation projects. Besides that, the projects play a major contribution towards lowering the toxic gas emissions that are present in the air as well as reducing pungent stenches during the production process of renewable energy from wastes, which drives its adoption in the market.
For instance, in August 2023, the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy (MNRE) announced that India is strongly focusing on the development of Biomethanation projects for efficient waste to energy (WTE) conversion. MNRE also added that new Biomethanation plants of various capacities (33,000 kg/day in Punjab, 20,000 kg/day in Maharashtra, 10,200 kg/day in Karnataka, etc.) have been installed across the country within the fiscal years 2022 to 2024. These plants are going to enhance the biomethanation process even more in India and thus will contribute greatly to meet the sustainability targets for the country.
Rise in the Number of Waste to Energy Projects is Amplifying the Market Expedition
India is strongly focusing on investing in waste to energy projects, complementing its idea of sustainability. This waste will help the country meet its objectives of increasing the growth of renewable energy while minimizing landfills and greenhouse gas emissions. Utilizing waste-to-energy solutions will boost the economy and stabilize growth in the country. This transition not only addresses environmental concerns but also fosters technological advancements in the renewable sector and, at the same time, positions India as a leader in sustainable energy development while supporting its broader economic objectives.
For instance, in August 2024, the Ministry of Environment, Forest and Climate Change announced that Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is building a waste to energy project with a capacity of converting 600 tonnes per day (TPD) of municipal solid wastes into electricity. Funded under the Grant for Solid Waste Management in the 15th Finance Commission, it will generate a total electricity of around 7 megawatt (MW). Moreover, the overall cost of the project stood at USD 59.92 million. This clearly highlights BMC’s commitment to mitigate the problems related to waste management in Mumbai thereby contributing to renewable energy generation.
Increase in Need for Pyrolysis Technology in Waste to Energy Conversion is Fueling the Market Growth
The importance of pyrolysis technology in waste-to-energy conversion in India lies in its ability to overcome significant challenges in waste management. This approach reduces reliance on traditional waste disposal methods, which mostly cause pollution. Moreover, the technology promotes decentralized waste management, thereby proving to be a sustainable alternative that reduces the environmental impact. Additionally, the technology supports carbon neutrality and has diversified applications in agriculture, energy production, and environmental conservation, thereby promoting a circular economy and expediting market growth.
For instance, in August 2024, the Indian government announced that the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bhubaneswar has developed a microwave pyrolysis reactor with the use of solar energy for sustainable waste to energy conversion. The microwave-assisted pyrolysis can extract valuable resources from segregated or mixed waste comprising of plastics and then rapidly transforms these wastes into renewable energy. The technology is entirely solar-powered, carbon neutral and promotes decentralized waste management with substantial environmental benefits, thus expediting the market growth.
Western and Central India Emerges as the Market Leader
The western and central region of India is leading the market share significantly and is expected to continue to do so in the upcoming years due to the presence of states like Gujarat, Madhya Pradesh and Maharashtra. The major factors influencing the growth of WTE facilities in the region include high generation of waste in urban areas and an effective industrial base that is able to convert these wastes into electrical energy. Furthermore, the region is facilitated by encouraging government policies and schemes supporting the development of renewable energy at a national level. This makes the western region a leader in advancing sustainable waste management solutions in India through a combination of urbanization, industrial capability, and favorable policies, thereby facilitating market growth.
For instance, in November 2024, the Indian government inaugurated the largest waste to energy plant in Gujarat worth USD 44.58 million at Piplaj, Ahmedabad. This project is in collaboration between the Government of Gujarat and the Jindal Urban Waste Management Company. This facility can produce 15 megawatts (MW) of power from 1 thousand metric tonnes of solid waste per day. It not only guarantees a green future for the city of Ahmedabad but also stands as one of the country’s assets for proficient waste management.

Future Market Scenario (FY2025 – FY2032)
The future market scenario for WTE in India appears promising, driven by the country’s escalating waste generation and the urgent need for sustainable energy solutions.
Moreover, the Indian government is spending a hefty amount towards the development of WTE technology across the country via research and development (R&D) activities which, in turn will cater to ample opportunities for market growth in the upcoming years.
Pyrolysis technology will be the prime opportunity in waste to energy management for India, as most forms of waste can be easily converted into clean energy via this procedure. With greater urbanization and waste production, the utilization of pyrolysis can lead to more energy security and less landfills. This, in turn will make WTE a pivotal solution for sustainable development across the country.
Incineration is an integral part of India’s waste to energy strategy, converting municipal solid waste into electricity through high-temperature combustion. The process not only reduces the volume of waste but also generates renewable energy, addressing environmental concerns amid increasing levels of waste due to urbanization and industrialization, thereby catering to ample opportunities for the market in the future.
