Two years ago this month, large lava flows covered land southeast of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, destroying over 700 homes and devastating residential areas in the Puna District. At the same time, the summit area of the park was dramatically changed by tens of thousands of earthquakes, towering ash plumes and a massive collapse of Kīlauea caldera. The lava lake in the Halema'uma'u crater drained and the crater deepened and expanded. Today, a body of water the size of a football stadium simmers at the bottom and no molten lava or lava glow can be seen anywhere in the park. Photo from June, 2018, by U.S. Geological Survey.

Kapoho, Hawaii
Kapoho, Hawaii, is a now-uninhabited unincorporated area in Puna district, Hawaii County, Hawaii, located near the eastern tip of the island of Hawaii, in the easternmost end of the graben overlying Kīlauea's east rift zone. Originally destroyed by an eruption of Kīlauea in 1960, it was rebuilt as a community of private homes and vacation rentals. In the eruption that began in May 2018, the town was largely destroyed by lava by early June, and the bay filled in as the lava flow extended out into the ocean.

where to find the food: learning from indigenous sources
Tumblr media
things are bleak out there in the mindscape of the populace. people can’t even imagine what a non-extractive relationship with the natural world might look like.
Tumblr media
if it’s not city living, then it must be “subsistence farming,” right?
yet people have lived in mutually constitutive ways with the natural world since we first came into existence, and many people around the world still live in this way.
there’s no one-size-fits-all prescription for living with the land. each place has different conditions and resources, so the living strategy has to be specific to that place.
additionally, if your idea of living with the land looks like me and my family with our plot of land and you and your family with your plot of land, then i encourage you to expand it.
western ideas of “cultivation” can be very limited. if you know where a plant already grows in the forest and have the wisdom to only use what you need and not degrade its growing site, then that too is cultivation:
Tumblr media
the above is from “tales of a shaman's apprentice” by mark j plotkin. in this excerpt, he’s speaking with a person who lives in suriname.
here’s another excerpt from a few pages later:
Tumblr media
plotkin makes a little joke about this being like a sightseeing tour, but look at all the important information the person shares: where toucan can be caught, where big catfish can be caught, where the cassava garden is, and where the jaguar lives (important to be careful in that area!).
you can often find concrete information about how to live in a particular place when reading and listening to the words of indigenous people, who have developed successful lifeways over a long time. often these lifeways are sustainable because the people’s continued survival depends on the resources staying viable into the future.
here are some excerpts from the book “story of kapa’ahu” by emma kapunohu’ulaokalani kauhi, a woman from the puna district of the island of hawai’i. mixed in with stories about family and traditions, there’s a huge amount of information about all the foods people relied on and how to acquire and even prepare them:
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
from these stories, we learn specifics - what to get and where to get it. but we also learn a lot more: people gathered food from the sea and the land but they also farmed on the land, cultivated bees, and kept livestock. they were not “just hunter gatherers” and they were not “just farmers.” we also learn about the signs (also known as “portents”) that people used to determine when a particular resource was ready to harvest. finally, we learn an important lesson about how we relate to natural resources: only take what you need, don’t waste, and there will be enough for later.
my last examples come from the book “australia’s kakadu man bill neidjie” by big bill neidjie (of the gagudju people of northern australia) and his collaborators stephen davis and allan fox. the book includes stories by big bill neidjie and additional material by his collaborators. australia is not an easy place to make a life, and life strategies of the gagudju people are described:
Tumblr media
the gagudju people’s strategies are highly seasonal:
Tumblr media
here neidjie talks about his people’s relationship with the natural world and the role of fire:
Tumblr media
here he discusses the importance of not wasting available resources and the relationship between not-wasting and resource availability in the future:
Tumblr media Tumblr media
in this section, he talks about the importance of treating sacred places with extreme care. a cave might have important paintings in it:
Tumblr media
in the above section he writes that his grandfather taught him that the painting is true. what could that mean? in the next section he writes about how the size of the fish in the painting tells you the exact size the fish ought to be when you harvest it:
Tumblr media
harvesting a fruit or catching a fish only at a certain size will give you the best yield while also ensuring that the population can remain healthy for next year.
but the white people rushed in without asking about fish, caves, or dreaming (the australian aboriginal worldview):
Tumblr media
neidjie acknowledges that the story might be hard to understand, hard to listen to. but you just have to listen carefully, slowly:
Tumblr media
as i read the words of indigenous people, i’ve learned not just important specific details about living on the land, but a huge number of additional lessons. i learned that porpoises swimming toward hilo mean the sea will be calm, but i also learned that it’s possible to make predictions about the sea based on which way the porpoises are swimming, which is part of an even larger lesson: that you can observe the world around you and discover relationships that will aid you in living.
this is how it is learning from indigenous stories: there are many things to learn from each story and if you don’t read them, you’ll never know what you’re missing. so even if the meaning might be a little bit hard, just listen carefully...slowly...and there will be no limit to the things you can learn.
