Kamapua’a and Pele
In Hawaiian mythology, many gods and goddesses stood supreme over the exotic landscapes of the Hawaiian Island Chain. Kamapua'a was known as the Pig God. In the Hawaiian language, Kamapua'a translates roughly to "Pig Child". Born on the island of Oahu to human parents, Kamapua'a was an adventurous and often mischeivious character. Of his many powers, he possessed the ability to change his form from human to hog. Kamapua'a was worshipped only by commoners.
"The pig god was associated with Lono, the god of agriculture, and with farming and fertility. This was based on the perception that pigs root in the earth, like a farmer. The pig-god has the attributes of pigs: big, strong, gluttonous, bristly, noisy, agile, sharp-eyed; also a loner, a wanderer, a trespasser who could be aggressive and destructive; and sexually potent. Various episodes in his tradition depict him as struggling to become more human."
Hawaiian legends states that in his human form, Kamapua'a was very strong, attractive and charismatic. He could easily persuade the women of the local villages. The legends say that Kamapua'a traveled to Maui and Tahiti, exploring and causing mischief along the way. Finally, he returns to the Big Island, Hawaii. While on Hawaii island, Kamapua'a falls in love with Pele, the Hawaiian Goddess of Fire. Pele initially turns him away calling him the "child of a pig". With time, Kamapua'a finds his way into Pele's heart and they fall deeply in love.
It is said that their romance was short lived. Soon, their battles far outweighed their love for each other. Leading to a massive battle in which Kamapua'a tried to extinguish Pele’s flame. Eventually the two gods agree to split this island between them, Pele taking the regions of Puna, Ka'u and Kona (current location of Hawaii's lava fields), and Kamapua'a taking the districts of Kohala, Hamakua and Hilo where the moisture prevails. Even today, there are many formations around the islands that the Hawaiian people see as evidence of past battles between Kamapua'a and Pele.

The Ultimate Guide to Buying Used Cars in Hawaii: A Local's Perspective on Island Auto Shopping
The Hawaiian used car market presents unique characteristics across all islands, from Big Island to Kauai, with distinct considerations that set it apart from both mainland markets and individual island submarkets. Understanding these statewide dynamics helps buyers navigate the Hawaiian used car landscape effectively.
Island hopping adds an interesting dimension to Hawaii's used car market. Inter-island vehicle transportation creates opportunities for buyers to access inventory across different islands, though shipping costs and logistics require careful consideration. This mobility has created a dynamic market where vehicles frequently move between islands to meet demand fluctuations.
Hawaiian climate considerations significantly impact used car values and conditions. Vehicles from areas like Hilo or Kauai's north shore may experience higher rainfall exposure, while those from Kona or Maui's leeward side often face intense sun exposure. These environmental factors influence vehicle condition and maintenance requirements differently across the state.
The tourism industry's influence used cars in Hawaii market creates unique opportunities. Former rental fleet vehicles regularly enter the market, often with comprehensive maintenance records and relatively low mileage despite their age. These vehicles typically feature desirable options for island living, including enhanced cooling systems and proper undercoating.
Hawaii's geographic isolation impacts parts availability and maintenance costs statewide. Successful used car ownership often depends on choosing models with strong local dealer support and readily available parts. Japanese manufacturers maintain particularly strong presence across the islands, contributing to lower maintenance costs for these brands.
Rural areas across all islands present specific vehicle requirements. Properties in areas like Hawaii Island's Puna district or Maui's upcountry region often necessitate vehicles with higher ground clearance and robust four-wheel-drive systems. This demand influences the types of used vehicles that retain value across the state.
Price variations between islands reflect local market conditions and transportation costs. Oahu's larger market typically offers more competitive pricing, while outer island buyers might face limited selection but find unique opportunities in local markets. Understanding these regional price differences helps buyers make informed decisions about where to shop.
Electric and hybrid vehicles have gained particular prominence in Hawaii's used car market, driven by high fuel costs and limited driving distances. These vehicles often command premium prices but can provide significant long-term savings given Hawaii's electricity rates and typical driving patterns.
Military presence across the state influences used cars for sale Oahu Hawaii market through regular rotation of personnel. This creates both opportunities and challenges, with vehicles entering and leaving the market at predictable intervals. Many sellers from military communities maintain detailed service records and often invest in proper island-specific maintenance.
Documentation requirements for used cars vary slightly between counties but maintain consistent state standards. Understanding Hawaii's unique vehicle registration system, safety inspection requirements, and emissions standards helps buyers avoid compliance issues regardless of which island they call home.
Local mechanics emphasize inspection of specific components for Hawaiian used cars. These include checking for salt air corrosion, especially in coastal areas, examining window seals and weatherstripping that can deteriorate in tropical conditions, and verifying the condition of cooling systems essential for island operation. https://www.autozillahawaii.com/

Two years ago this month, large lava flows covered land southeast of Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, destroying over 700 homes and devastating residential areas in the Puna District. At the same time, the summit area of the park was dramatically changed by tens of thousands of earthquakes, towering ash plumes and a massive collapse of Kīlauea caldera. The lava lake in the Halema'uma'u crater drained and the crater deepened and expanded. Today, a body of water the size of a football stadium simmers at the bottom and no molten lava or lava glow can be seen anywhere in the park. Photo from June, 2018, by U.S. Geological Survey.

Kapoho, Hawaii
Kapoho, Hawaii, is a now-uninhabited unincorporated area in Puna district, Hawaii County, Hawaii, located near the eastern tip of the island of Hawaii, in the easternmost end of the graben overlying Kīlauea's east rift zone. Originally destroyed by an eruption of Kīlauea in 1960, it was rebuilt as a community of private homes and vacation rentals. In the eruption that began in May 2018, the town was largely destroyed by lava by early June, and the bay filled in as the lava flow extended out into the ocean.

Artist's depiction of Pele and Kamapua'a.

Lore: Kamapua’a, bastard demigod son of Hina, once attempted to catch the attention of the goddess Pele. Changing his appearance to that of a handsome man, he presented himself, to the awe of Pele’s sisters, but not Pele herself, who could see through his disguise. After mocking his true pig-like appearance, their meeting turned volatile and the two fought. Unfortunately Kamapua’a was her equal in combat prowess. All of the lava rock she created, he could turn into fertile soil. Although Kamapua’a wins in the end, he is heartbroken, and leaves Pele to her own domain on the fiery mountain tops of Hawaii. For ages, he longed for her from the luscious forests and from the beautiful seashores below, but Pele has since left her home atop the volcanic mountains to fight on the Battleground of the gods. If she believed herself ready to leave the islands, maybe she’s also ready to give Kamapua’a a second chance?

In Wikipedia:
Kamapua’a and Pele
There are contradictory stories depicting the relationship between Kamapua’a and Pele. In some versions they are described as enemies (Hawaiian Romance), in others they are depicted as lovers or husband and wife (Hawaiian folk tales). One story of how Pele and Kamapua’a met starts off with Kamapua’a on a journey to Pele's home. Kamapua’a tried to impress Pele and her sisters by looking like a handsome man. He impressed her sisters but Pele is not impressed, instead she insults Kamapua’a by calling him a pig. This upsets Kamapua’a, which then turned their conversation into an argument of insults to each other. Kamapua’a tried to get closer to Pele but Pele sent her flames to him leaving him in a pit of fire. Kamapua’a strikes back by summoning his sister Makahanaloa; she puts out the fire with fog and rain, and hogs run all over the place. All that is left are the fire sticks; Pele accepts her defeat. Kamapua’a takes the sticks and divides the districts giving Pele the districts overrun with lava flows; he takes the Windward districts with the most rain. Kamapua’a leaves Hawaii and starts a family in the ocean where he belongs; Pele now loves Kamapua’a and tries to get him back with a love chant. As Kamapua’a lives his life in the ocean, he still watches over his side of the island. He ventures through the ocean in his new form the humu-humu-nuku-nuku apua’a. He never steps foot on the island again because he doesn't want to run into Pele. Kamapuaʹa later returned to the island as a handsome man and made love with Pele. Their union produced a baby girl whom Pele named Kaʹowakaikalani.
