Daily fish fact #401
Pumpkinseed!
They've evolved great camouflage, as the pattern of their scales resembles light reflecting in the water, making it hard for predators to tell where the fish ends and water begins! In case they do get noticed, they also have an eye spot down their side that makes them look larger than they truly are and unfavourable to predators.

Staff Pick of the Week
My staff pick this week is a volume from the Childcraft series from W.F. Quarrie & Company. This is volume 14 of 14, and it focuses on Science and Industry. The W.F. Quarrie Company was also the publisher of the World Book Encyclopedia from 1919-1945, but that’s about all I could find out about the company.
The series is meant to be educational and fun for children, with other volumes featuring subjects like “Experience Stories and Animal Friends” and “Art and Music.” Unfortunately, we only have volume 14, but it is plenty cute and full of great pictures and illustrations. Today I’ve chosen to focus on the science half of science and industry and the color illustrations of fish, frogs, and turtles. The fish shown here are Pumpkinseed Sunfish (Eupomotis gibbosus), engaged in various fishy activities, including stealing worms off a fisher’s hook! The frogs are Leopard Frogs (Rana pipiens) and are shown here as eggs, tadpoles, and adult frogs, one of which can be seen eating a mouse! The turtles are Painted Turtles (Chrysemys picta), shown in the center “at their favorite sport, lazily basking on a waterlogged tree trunk.”

HEROES SPIRIT LINKS AS FISH IF HEROES SPIRIT WERE FISH
This is my mermay contribution. All characters belong to @heroesspirit!!!
Each Link has a different place in the world of cultural inspiration, so at least one of the fish included for each is endemic to that region. Endemic means it is native to that specific area and not found (naturally) anywhere else in the world!! It’s really cool. There are some fish that are endemic to a singular lake!!!! Big lakes, but still one singular lake!!!! Or one reach of a tributary stream!!! It’s super cool.
Anyway. FISH!!!!! Image descriptions at the very bottom! :D
IMAGE ID: Images are the names of each link and then a saltwater fish and a freshwater fish. Each fish has the common name, the common name in the native language of wherever it is found, and then the scientific name. The fish are listed below. Since I am posting this on mobile I only have an English keyboard, so I am only including the common names in the ISO Latin alphabet in the descriptions.
Eras. Saltwater: Whale shark, Rhincodon typus. Freshwater: Rock carp, Procypris rabaudi.
Legend. Saltwater: West Indian lionfish, Pterois brevipectoralis. Freshwater: Malaysian fish, Betta tussyae.
Sailor. Swallowtail fangblenny, Meiacanthus procne. Freshwater: Peacock-eye gudgeon, Tateurndina ocellicauda.
Kiri. Saltwater: Saddleback anemonefish, Giru, Amphiprion polymnus. Freshwater: Starry sturgeon, Uzun burun, Acipenser stellatus.
Four. Saltwater: Bluehead fairy wrasse, Cirrhilabrus cyanopleura. Freshwater: Pumpkinseed sunfish, Zonnebaars, Lepomis gibbosus.
Cori. Saltwater: Morid cod, Úthafsmóra, Svetovidovia lucullus. Freshwater: Bumblebee guppy, Poecilia reticulata.
Sky. Saltwater: Blotchwing flyingfish, Peshk fluturues, Rundinella, Uçan balik, Cheilopogon heterurus. Freshwater: Peruvian longfin, Aphyolebias peruensis.
Piper: Blackspot tuskfish, Marigyan, Mugadyi, Nggalanggari, Choerodon schoeleinii. Freshwater: Central stoneroller, Campostoma anomalum.
Wild. Saltwater: Ornate cowfish, Arcana ornata. Freshwater: Blunt-nosed Irish charr, Salvelinus obtusus.
First: Saltwater: Leafy seadragon, Phycodurus eques. Freshwater: Leopard barbel, A’djzan, Abou khazzama, Luciobarbus subquincunciatus

hiya! I'm starting painting and i want to make some fishy pieces for the season, do you perchanse have any fish named after typically spooky things 👉👈
Chimaeras are also called ghost sharks, and ghost catfish are not only named that but literally look like skeletons, because you can see their skeleton! There's also a whole bunch of fish named batfish, there's the benthic anglerfish batfishes and the spadefish batfishes! I will never forget the longfin/dusky batfish, whose juvenile form is all black with an orange outline all throughout, nevermind the massive dorsal and anal fins. Very fitting for a spooky time! And um. One of the freshwater sunfish is called a pumpkinseed. Oooooo!!!!!! Pumpkins!!!!!!!!
Doing some looking up, there seems to be a whole species of flounder named witch flounder? Glyptocephalus cynoglossus! I'm definitely making a fish fact about that one. And how could I forget about the dracula fish, a tiny fish who re-evolved fanglike bone protrusions! And payara and candiru can both sometimes be called vampirefish :) And!!! Tripodfish can be called spiderfish too!!!
That's about it for now. If you want to branch out of fish, there's my sister's favourite animals, the spider crabs! Please share your paintings with me, won't you? ;D
