The Babel that is 'AI'
The foreman of the Babel project likely shared Sam Altman’s guiding conviction that “all real, sustainable human progress comes from scientific and technological progress” because he was overseeing the use of technological advances giving rise (literally) to ancient towers known as ziggurats throughout the region. The Babel story of Genesis 11 is paradigmatic, representing humanity’s effort by wit, muscle, administration, and, yes, technology to build a mighty kingdom opposed to God that protects and puffs-up (“make a name,” as the story says) the kingdom of man.
The means of achieving these twin goals (protection and pride) are sharply contrasted in the story that follows Babel. When God calls Abram in Genesis 12, he promises the same things (a name and protection/blessing) to Abram, but in a very different manner. If Babel is a project built from the ground-up through human toil, God’s kingdom will be built from the top-down by grace. Babel typifies humanity’s rebellion against God, an effort to acquire dominance, glory, security, and a kingdom apart from the Creator.
Here’s the important point: the Scriptures indicate that demonic forces operate on a parallel yet interconnected track with human forces. These demonic ties don’t just play a supportive role to human attempts at self-glory, but are fundamental to the project of building an empire apart from God. Paul hints at this in his words to a persecuted church; he reminds them that they do not battle against “flesh and blood,” but against the “rulers,” “authorities,” and “cosmic powers” of darkness (Ephesians 6:12)....
It is striking that when it comes to most of our AI fears, deception is the common denominator. In academic settings, concerns abound as to how the technology might be used by students to deceive their teachers into thinking AI generated work was student generated. Similar worries can be found in creative enterprises like music, visual arts, and writing. And let’s not forget that one of Sydney’s “dark fantasies” is to spread misinformation. Whether it’s misinformation, deepfakes, AI-generated work presented as one’s own, a faux romance with AI, deception is the common thread. The fingerprints of the “Father of Lies” seem to be all over the technology.
Seen from a spiritual frame, as Kingsnorth urges us to, it is not difficult to view the AI enterprise, with its Babel-like aspirations, as the latest attempt to usher a new iteration of the kingdom of man. Just like forces of darkness were behind the building of these ancient kingdoms, these same forces of darkness work behind the “wires,” “electric pulses,” “touchscreens” and “headsets” shaping AI, a case bolstered by the deceit and falsehood often tied to the technology.
This is not to say that there is not a way for the technology to move forward in a manner aligned with the City of God, but thus far Big Tech (collectively) seems quite content to operate from a position of self-interest and self-gain, values prized by both the City of Man and the cosmic powers of darkness.

Stupid Bots...
Ok, so we all know how annoying bots are right? Well if you're a writer I bet a lot of you have been getting similar messages about paying to have them animated or to do a collaboration with this bot for an art commission. Well from here on out I'm going to be reporting/blocking those kinds of messages on any platform I get them on since this is getting ridiculous. Don't get me wrong, its good to be back online on my new laptop but getting PM's and "reviews" that are just bot messages isn't fun at all. They literally all start more or less the same too...
Example:
"I really liked your story (insert name here) its so good but I can make it even better so would you like to collab with me?"
But if you ask them for specific details on what they liked about the story beyond just saying the title, well, its easy to tell they're a bot. So I'd caution you guys to keep an eye out for them too since they tend to follow you then message/leave a review that has nothing to do with the actual story they're referring to. And half the time they don't say it until you ask them which one they mean if you have multiple fanfics.

Yes, thank you! I have been very addicted to Ai chats, and I've lost control of time. I'm currently trying to get better. This is either really good or really bad, a mixture of both, really. Hopefully, I'll get back into the groove of things. Sorry if I caused any concern.

Oh Luna, Luna, Luna, wouldn’t you love it if Solo bought all those cute little stuffed animals for you! It would be so sweet of him and not edgy at all! In fact, I’m sure it would make for a very very memorable gift you’ll cherish forever! Now let’s see, how many can he afford?
"That would be nice... But I don't want to pressure Solo into..."
"Nonsense! I'll gladly buy you as much stuffed animals as you want."
"R-really? I-it's no problem at all! I come from a rich family! You don't have to buy anything for me..."
"It's no trouble. I've taken a few jobs and made quite a bit of money. And plus, it's the gentleman thing to do."
"That's so sweet of you, Solo. Thank you."
"Oh... As nice as this is, I have a bad feeling Solo is going to scream her ear off for making him waste his money on her when the love potion wears off..."
"Yeah... And he'll probably yell at us too for not stopping him..."
"I feel like the longer this goes on, the deeper we dig ourselves into a hole..."

[[Screenshot ID: A twitter thread by sjklapecwriting that says:
The fact that "AI = what makes NPCs in video games do things" and "AI = complex scientific models that have been in use for years" and "AI = non-generative tools that automate tedious processes" and "AI = generative tools" are all called AI feels like deliberate obfuscation.
I want good AI in video games but I also don't want AI in video games at all and I think AI is useful in the sciences but don't trust AI at all to be used in science or medicine or law and AI to colour-correct a video or remove greenscreen is cool but AI generating movies sucks.
We talk about things that threaten art and creativity and steal vast quantities of work from artists and burn the amazon and drain the seas to do it all with the same language as something that can track a part of a video so special effects are easier to make and that sucks.
And this obfuscation feels so deliberate to me, because now people freak out if someone talks about wanting to use "AI that learns from the player" or "an AI solution to help me edit video" or "an AI that can be used to generate theoretical materials to test" and they look silly.
Because now "AI" is so firmly wrapped up with the concept of "generative models" that people are, rightfully, on guard against any mention of AI whatsoever to the point where entirely distinct technologies get uselessly criticized under the same umbrella.
Like imagine if we had no other language but "tank" to describe motor vehicles, so if I said we needed "public transit vehicles" everyone thought I wanted M1A1 Abrams for civilian transit. That's what it's like talking about AI.
End ID]]
#I really like the closing analogy and the points being made here and I'd take the criticism of the lack of specificity even farther#Like the generative nature is not the problem you can throw a bunch of texts into a small model you can train on your local computer and#make weird robot poetry that you execute your human curation skills on in order to find stuff worth sharing#that can be a worthwhile artistic endeavor that's generative use of computational models and even doing the same sort of#mathematical recombining#but you can do it in a way that's intentional and transformative and doesn't burn through any more power than routine computer tasks#in the year of our lord 2024#if you use a small enough set of texts and you're familiar with them you can spot plagiarism pretty easily#this was like a really common toy exercise for artsy or lit-loving folks in CS for years to dick around with the works of an author or two#anyways as someone who's had their finger on this pulse since before the chatgpt explosion#I still think that the problem has to do with the ease of interacting with an overpowered imperfect world-burning computer program#that will produce good-SEEMING results with absolutely no training from the operator#and i wish we had a name for the bad ones that focused on that#generative AI is too kind of a name for things like chatgpt#it lumps things that are actually useful (and old) in with things that are problematic#it's not calling out the problem and that's why the proponents of chatgpt are still okay with it#They're live tanks that look like fisher price cars#they're unregulated cartoon vapes#they're a brain surgery for dummies book#they're an unmarked button in your car that fires a cannon out of the top#fwiw I think the obfuscation is also coming more from a place of the AI bros wanting to steal legitimacy from scientific fields#wanting to make their current giant black box toy language models look older and more researched than they are#which I suppose is more or less what OP is saying#but phrased in a way that makes AI bros sound less like chessmasters#which i think is a useful exercise#long post
