Skipper Dasun Shanaka's Greys In Clinical Final Win
The euphoria of a thriller at the SLC T20 Invitational League final turned into an anti-climax with only one team playing to win, as the SLC Greys led by Sri Lanka captain Dasun Shanaka lifted the trophy with a 42-run victory at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium on Tuesday.
Tumblr media
The SLC Reds had lost their way in the match even before their run chase started after conceding the first 200 total, which meant that the Greys had the match wrapped up well and truly.
The mainstay in the Reds batting line up Avishka Fernando and Dinesh Chandimal were unable to get off to a start that required 10 runs an over with both falling to scores of 10 and 14 respectively in the face of some accurate bowling.
Their gamble in pushing Seekkuge Prasanna up the order at number 3 did not pay off as he was out for 4, another miscalculation.
Oshada Fernando did some desperate hitting to make 47 with three fours and three sixes but the Reds had slumped in the scoring rate to ensure they got close to the target which was eventually beyond reach.
Earlier the Greys winning the toss and batting first overcame some early set-backs losing two wickets for 33 runs, but the struggling Minod Bhanuka and Nuwanidu Fernando with an 82-run stand for the third wicket in under 10 overs put them on course.
But the worst was to come for the Reds when Greys captain Dasun Shanaka smashed an unbeaten 48 in only 17 balls with four fours and four sixes to take his tournament aggregate to 258 from six appearances at the crease.
Scores:
SLC Greys 201 for 4 in 20 (Minod Bhanuka 74, Nuwanidu Fernando 47, Dasun Shanaka 48 not out) SLC Reds 159 in 19.4 (Oshada Fernando 46, Nuwan Pradeep 2 for 17, Pulina Tharanga 2 for 27)
